Spring Romance

Vânia

Aguiar

Our Beauty Editor shares new trends of the season.

“This season, the artist of your beauty is you, raise your brushes, and go!”

This spring, we’re embracing bold possibilities - especially with iridescent and chrome eyelids. They’ll be clamouring for the return of sunny days. For a more natural vibe, brown and mocha blended with charcoal give a soft smoky look. The true star of the season is the glowy complexion. Matte cheeks are taking a back seat as light, shine, and that famous glow take center stage, giving a natural, radiant appearance. For the perfect pout, start with a base of concealer, then layer on a lip gloss or tinted lip balm. Then, a swipe of mascara is all you need to complete the look.

Beauty & Wellness Destinations

to Try this Spring!

Back to Basics - Le Strom

You only have to enter the wellness area of the Nordic Strom Spa of Mont Saint-Hilaire for your heart rate to slow down. Located on the mountainside, in the heart of the Gault Nature Reserve, the spa offers moments of absolute contemplation where silence reigns. It ensures total restoration of every inch of the body, from the soles of your feet to the top of your head.

The spa offers close contact with nature. Its panoramic view over Mont Saint-Hilaire, its outdoor pool, its salt exfoliation area and its relaxation rooms allow you to completely switch off.

Between the outdoor jacuzzis, temperate or icecold water pools, sunshine pool, saunas, eucalyptus and essential oil steam baths, thermal waterfalls and indoor and outdoor relaxation areas, it’s really difficult to choose just one favourite space because every nook and cranny has been designed with care, elegance, and delicacy.

On a beautiful day in December, I was able to try

out the Nordic Strom Spa. After taking in the sights and the spa circuit, I headed to the cabin to receive an anti-aging facial. I was impressed by the expertise of the cosmetician, Jasmine. She started the treatment with unparalleled delicacy, massaged my face and then continued the process with gentle exfoliation, a mask and, for the grand finale, a serum bursting with active ingredients. It was one of the best facials I have ever experienced!

Once my face had been thoroughly plumped, smoothed and hydrated, I headed to another cabin for a body treatment. Like a dream, the signature 90-minute hot stone massage made me lose track of time. After enveloping and relaxing strokes, the expert concluded the session with a head massage. A moment of pure happiness! Enhance the skin, harmonize the body and brighten the spirit. Within this holistic journey, I had a wonderful day of relaxation. In high spirits and with a relaxed body, I returned to Montreal feeling completely serene.

Innovative Care - Endermologie

Last fall, I visited the Centre de Massodermie in Montreal to discover and understand endermology and endermotherapy protocols. What exactly is it? Sylvie Fenet and Yves Le Dentu, physiotherapists at the clinic, have generously enlightened me on the subject. The endermology protocol first comes through an LPG device, a revolutionary French technology that has been shaping the wellness and beauty industry for over 30 years. Developed in the 1980s to treat scar tissue and assist in physical therapy for burn victims, LPG has evolved considerably over the years. Today, it is celebrated not only for its therapeutic benefits in physical rehabilitation, but also for its effectiveness in aesthetic treatments and sports recovery. This technology is based on mechanical massage techniques that stimulate the skin and subcutaneous tissues. LPG’s Vitality - StressSleep endermology protocol enhances vitality, reduces stress, and improves sleep through a comprehensive treatment that tackles the impacts of stress and anxiety on physical and mental health. Developed from clinical trials led by Professor Christophe Hausswirth, a renowned physiologist and researcher, the VSS Protocol leads to notable improvements in well-being and mental health. This protocol is therefore used as an anti-aging treatment, against cellulite, to improve the firmness of the skin and the shape of the body. As I had been sleeping poorly for some time, I tried the protocol for sleep. Not only was it very pleasant but I finally had a short but wonderful night’s sleep. Available across Canada thanks to Entreprises Daniele Henkel, the VSS Protocol is a good solution for those who want to improve their beauty and well-being without using injectable fillers or other invasive techniques.

The Essential - Rainspa

Nestled inside the luxurious Hotel Place d’Armes opposite the Notre-Dame Basilica in Old Montreal, the Rainspa – a lucky winner of Tripadviser’s prestigious Traveller’s Choice Award 2023 and 2024 – offers a multitude of facial and body treatments. I tried the Douceur d’Orient Signature Ritual, a 120-minute treatment inspired by traditional hammams. The goal: to relieve muscle tension, for a deep relaxation.

Diana, an expert with a soothing voice, first explained the steps of this protocol to me, then helped me choose the scented oil that would be used in the final stage of my treatment. Once in the cabin, steam was produced and the choreography of energetic yet relaxing movements began. Next, a soft scrub with rose crystals and argan oil. Following that, in an exhilarating cascade, was exfoliation with nourishing perfumed oil, the application of yellow clay to regenerate the skin, and a gentle scalp massage. A flawless sensory experience! The ultimate in well-being, it continued with a relaxing 30 minute massage featuring almond oil with a floral-aquatic scent called Essence du Nile that left my skin unbelievably soft.

I was already on Cloud Nine when I was guided to another cabin. On the schedule: the MC110 facial treatment. Revitalizing and regenerating, it consisted

of a gentle exfoliation to eliminate impurities and improve skin texture. A promise kept. The benefits of a day of treatments at Rainspa are undeniable. And it’s an unforgettable sensory experience!

La Belle Flower Edition

Eau de Parfum, $210 / 100 ml, available at Jean Coutu

For women or men to yield to it, a fragrance must arouse a deep desire. But you have to know how to bring it to life. Take a look behind the scenes at the perfumery, where trends are set.

With a few exceptions - Goutal, Cartier, Chanel, Dior, Guerlain, Hermès and Serge Lutens - few brands formulate their own scents. Most fragrances are in fact created by the legion of perfumers working in firms such as Firmenich, IFF and Givaudan. They work from a brief provided by the brand. A brief is a document full of keywords, photos and mood descriptions. It also contains many technical requirements: sought-after olfactory type, production times, price of the concentrate (an ingredient such as grey amber costs nearly $60,000 per kilo), etc.

An expert perfumery and marketing appraiser is responsible for ensuring that the scents offered by perfumers correspond to the image of a house. After all, we do not develop the same perfume for the Van Cleef & Arpels as we do for fashion celebrities! Guided and overseen in this way, the perfumer gets to work. This step is crucial, both for the brands and for the fragrance companies. Over the years – it took two years to formulate Clinique’s fragrance and seven for Estée Lauder’s . During the creation process the scents are inhaled, and we reject, doubt, hesitate and finally, we seriously consider adopting one of the concoctions.

After many trials - 1,200 for Angel by Mugler - a few “finalists” are selected. A battery of tests is then carried out: olfactory tests, in-use test where the perfume is worn by selected consumers, comparison with a perfume that has become a reference due to its success, etc. A little anecdote: Dior launched without conducting any such test, which the house L’Artisan Parfumeur still refuses to do.

How do we name a new-born fragrance? It can feel like looking for a new password! Inspired by the brief,

Jean Paul Gaultier

advertisers or name inventors draw on repertoires of words categorized by themes: seduction, nature, power, etc. Sometimes the name of a fragrance comes from personal memories. Lise Watier named one of hers Neiges because for her, it brought back memories of the snow-covered balconies of her Montreal childhood. But naming a fragrance is not enough. Checks are need to ensure that the name assigned to it has not already been registered by another house that has reserved the exclusive right to use it.

Once the fragrance is finally officially named, a bottle then has to be designed. This can evoke the stiletto associated with Good Girl by Carolina Herrera, or a wrapped vial recalling some sketches by Nina Ricci, or even a robot as is the case for the fragrance Phantom by Rabanne. Thanks to the computer, every whim is conceivable. 3D renderings display the object before it even exists. Thanks to digital models, we can even retouch existing bottles at will. That process brought about the 2010 redesign of Shalimar by Guerlain, by Jade Jagger, daughter of Mick, and the remodel of Air du temps by Nina Ricci, by designer Philippe Starck. Fragrance beckons for images that will make it unforgettable. The greatest directors - Sofia Coppola, Wong Kar-wai, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Baz Luhrmann, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Martin Scorsese... have created jewels of advertising for a fragrance.

Guerlain

Acqua Allegoria Rosa

Verde Eau de Parfum, $142 / 125 ml, available at Guerlain counters

Conversely, Woody Allen was once rejected by Chanel after he wanted to appear in an ad and Roman Polanski created a ferocious pastiche of an ad for the Internet, praising an imaginary fragrance ... A fragrance can also be represented by the face of a supermodel: Kate Moss for Saint Laurent; by an actress: Julia Roberts for Lancôme; by a TV star for John Galliano; or even by a pop star: Rihanna for Dior. And the ad for Lady Gaga’s fragrance Fame displays herself as the muse for the fragrance. On the other hand, we expect something else from designers Tom Ford and Elie Saab. It is also important to note that elegance in imagery should never be shocking. For example, in an ad for Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel, Keira Knightley’s nearly bare chest was subtly veiled in the version created for the American market. Despite the massive investments required to launch a perfume—such as the $100 million spent on CK ONE in 1994—success is never guaranteed. A fragrance often takes up to three years on the market before it can be considered a true hit, and even some masterpieces are ultimately left behind. In the end, only a rare few perfumes achieve lasting success. These are the ones that stand out, resonate with both women and men worldwide, capture their deepest emotions, and reflect the spirit of their time while transcending it.

THESE ARE PERFUMES THAT WE LOVE & HAVE RISEN TO THE RANK OF CLASSICS:

Shalimar by Guerlain. Its Baccarat crystal bottle, its intriguing blend of bergamot, rose, jasmine, vanilla, iris, tonka bean and incense have bewitched women for generations. In 1977, Opium by Yves Saint Laurent, a yuppie drug whose advertising, glass and plastic bottle, and heady scents signalled triumph over powerful orientals like Poison by Dior. Trésor by Lancôme is an emblematic figure of the return of retro. This 1952 musky oriental, which transformed itself into a soft floral, marked the return of new editions, such as Miss Dior. L’Eau d’Issey by Miyake, the ocean rediscovered. The first calone-based scent, an unprecedented ingredient with marine aromas, has frothed the aquatic wave of Acqua di Giò d’Armani since 1991. Eau d’Hadrien by Goutal, a fresh and elegant signature that has become legendary, in an exceptional bottle. Angel by Mugler, gluttony on display. Launched without any tests in 1992, this gourmand fragrance led to the creation of Lolita Lempicka’s now strong olfactory family. CK ONE by Calvin Klein, the anti-glamour. Its bottle in the shape of a whisky flask, its casual advertising and notes of lavender inaugurated the era of street-style perfumes in 1994.

CULT PERFUMES:

J’adore by Dior, a scent whose floral notes explode and make it the feminine fragrance par excellence. The insolent Very Irresistible by Givenchy. Miss Dior Cherie, which represents the modern, smart young woman, innocence and love. Terre by Hermès , which bewitches with its citrus top notes, its spicy heart and its woody backdrop. A simple yet elegant fragrance. Le Male by Jean Paul Gaultier, appreciated as much for its lavender aroma as for its timeless appearance or bottle design. We’ll never stop talking about it... Perfumery is evolving and continues to surprise us. Are you dying to discover the new opus this spring?

Innovative Beauty

When it comes to innovation, the beauty industry leads the way. The incontrovertible proof of this lies in the ingredients sourced and selected each year by researchers in this sector. This spring, we are promised the best in terms of care, whether it be probiotics, molecules, acids, oils, and so on.

Biotechnology innovation is continuously transforming the sector. Skin care containing living microorganisms, regenerative serums based on plant stem cells, or personalized products created using artificial intelligence are revolutionizing our beauty routines. The beauty industry is also continuously expanding to reflect diversity. The brands

offer product ranges covering all shades of complexion and all skin types. Unisex products are gaining popularity, targeting a clientele that transcends gender boundaries. In addition, specific care for mature or sensitive skin is increasingly advanced and efficient, offering solutions adapted to the needs of each individual. For this industry, beauty and well-being go hand in hand. Treatments are being designed to benefit the mind as much as the body. Beauty rituals are inspired by ancestral techniques, such as Gua Sha or acupressure, while incorporating modern approaches such as targeted aromatherapy and soothing LED waves.
