Con casi 500 metros de longitud, el edificio diseñado por Francisco Mangado sigue las trazas históricas del frente marítimo, y configura un nuevo límite urbano, convirtiéndose en un hito para el perfil de la ciudad.

Almost 500 meters in length, the building designed by Francisco Mangado follows the historical traces of the seafront, and forms a new urban border, becoming a landmark in the cityscape.

Con el objetivo de ampliar la oferta turística de la capital balear, en el año 2005 se celebró un concurso para el diseño de un nuevo Palacio de Congresos y un hotel en el frente marítimo de Palma. Fruto de esa convocatoria, el proyecto comenzó a construirse en 2008 y, a pesar de la paralización temporal de las obras —entre 2010 y 2012— como consecuencia de la crisis económica, el edificio pudo ser finalmente inaugurado en 2017. La propuesta entendía que trabajar en un solar rico y sugerente desde su dificultad de geometría y dimensión suponía elaborar una nueva ‘traza’ urbana de la ciudad. Estrecha y extremadamente alargada, la parcela refiere más a una idea de límite urbano de grandes dimensiones, capaz de albergar un edificio significativo con un programa complejo y diverso.

El proyecto mira al mar, y esta mirada se materializa en una fachada gruesa, de cinco metros de anchura, construida recurriendo a técnicas de ingeniería naval que, además de evitar el soleamiento directo desde el sur, alberga las escaleras y comunicaciones que unen los diferentes espacios y programas. Así, esta fachada al sur es como una muralla con recorrido, densa pero también abierta y que, en su espesor, a través de espacios ambiguos que no acaban de ser interior o exterior, se confunde con el paseo mismo. Su alter ego lo constituye la fachada norte, cuyo espesor se conforma a partir de los contenidos más ‘sirvientes’ del edificio. De esta manera se establece un doble esquema en peine —público al sur, privado al norte—, eficaz en términos funcionales.

With the idea of expanding the tourist offer of the Balearic capital, in 2005 a competition was held to design a new Congress Center and a hotel on Palma’s waterfront. Construction of the winning project started in 2008, and in spite of the temporary interruption of works – between 2010 and 2012 – as a consequence of the economic crisis, the building was finally inaugurated in 2017. The project rested on the idea that working on a lot that is rich and suggestive in its being difficult in geometry and size involved drawing up an altogether new urban ‘outline’ for the city. Narrow and elongated to an extreme, the site responds more to the idea of an urban boundary of huge dimensions, one able to accommodate a significant building housing a complex and diverse program.

The building looks towards the sea, and this seaward gaze is materialized in a thick facade – five meters wide and erected with techniques of naval engineering – that, besides keeping out direct sunlight coming from the south, contains the stairs and other elements connecting the different spaces and programs. The facade is thus like a town wall with a path, dense but also open, and in its thickness, through ambiguous spaces that cannot definitively be considered interior or exterior, it is confused with the promenade itself. The ‘alter ego’ is the north facade, whose thickness is formed by the building’s ‘server’ spaces.

The result is a comb-shaped double scheme – public to the south and private to the north –, efficient in functional terms.

Arrasada durante la Guerra de Corea, Pyongyang fue completamente reconstruida en 1953 siguiendo el criterio del fundador de la nación, Kim Il-sung. Con el actual líder, Kim Jong-un, la construcción se ha acelerado y la ciudad se está transformando rápidamente en el decorado de una ilusión de prosperidad. Devastated in the Korean War, Pyongyang was completely reconstructed in 1953, in accordance with criteria set by the nation’s founder, Kim Il-sung. Under the current leader, Kim Jong-un, construction has accelerated and the city has quickly transformed into the stage set of an illusion of prosperity. The journalist and photographer Oliver Wainwright, architecture critic of The Guardian, gives us an insightful walk through several restricted spaces of the world’s most hermetic state, showing how behind pastel-toned facades hides a lavish country of wonders made of marble, mosaic, and coffered ceilings.

Desde que en 1968 la tripulación del Apolo 8 nos ofreciera una imagen mítica de la Tierra desde el espacio, se han sucedido las fotografías cenitales tomadas desde satélites, con aplicaciones evidentes en campos como la agricultura, el medio ambiente o la cartografía. La empresa Planet, formada por extrabajadores de la NASA, da un paso más en esta dirección girando entre 45º y 60º el objetivo de sus cámaras, de manera que la superficie terrestre se tridimensionaliza. El efecto que se consigue con esta sencilla innovación simula la vista oblicua que tendríamos desde la ventanilla de un avión.

Una constelación de más de 175 satélites monitoriza diariamente el planeta recorriendo la órbita lunar cada 90 minutos. Los satélites —que no miden más de un metro y tienen una vida útil de seis años— son diseñados y construidos por la propia empresa que lanza uno nuevo cada tres meses. El sistema permite enviar información diaria a treinta estaciones terrestres situadas en diferentes puntos y desde allí se procesa, se archiva y se sube a una plataforma web para que sea accesible.

El cambio de perspectiva que provocaron las primeras fotografías de la Tierra desde el espacio, transformando la conciencia colectiva del planeta, cobra ahora una nueva dimensión al integrar estas imágenes en una red de datos. Ya no sólo podemos ver sino también comparar, analizar e identificar de forma automatizada las transformaciones que produce nuestro impacto en el territorio.

Since 1968, when the crew of Apollo 8 took the mythical image of Earth from outer space, many zenithal photos of our planet have been taken from satellites, with evident applications for fields like agriculture, the environment, or mapmaking. The firm Planet, set up by former NASA employees, advances in this direction by turning the lenses of their cameras to an angle between 45º and 60º, in such a way that the Earth’s surface appears three-dimensional. The effect obtained with this simple innovation simulates the oblique view one would have from an airplane window.

A constellation of over 175 satellites monitors the planet day by day, coursing the lunar orbit every 90 minutes. Measuring less than a meter and with a useful life of six years, the satellites are designed and made by the same enterprise that launches a new one every three months. The system allows sending information every day to thirty land-based stations, located at different points of the globe, where it is processed, filed, and uploaded to a web platform so that it is accessible to the public.

The change of perspective that the first photographs of Earth taken from space produced, transforming our collective awareness of the planet, now takes on new dimensions as these images enter a network of data. We can now not only see, but also in an automated way compare, analyze, and identify the transformations that our impact on the territory produces.

Cap Ferrat es un emblemático edificio residencial situado en la exclusiva Avenida Vieira Souto en Río de Janeiro. Construido en 1976, este edificio icono del brasileño barrio de Ipanema, cuenta con una superficie de 15.000 m² y 20 pisos de altura, donde se ubican viviendas, dúplex, garajes y zonas de uso común.

Cuarenta años después de su construcción, entre 2013 y 2016 se lleva a cabo el proyecto de remodelación del revestimiento de los balcones del edificio debido al deterioro provocado por la oxidación galvánica de las piezas de aluminio de las barandas, lo que provocó el agrietamiento de las placas de granito originales que revestían las vigas perimetrales de los seis balcones con los que cuenta la torre. La oxidación galvánica tuvo su origen en el anclaje de los soportes de aluminio de las barandas mediante piezas de hierro.

La combinación de metales diferentes ocasionó la corrosión. La consecuente dilatación de la argamasa, en la fijación de las placas de granito, provocó diversas fisuras y roturas en el material inicial.

El estudio Di Filippo Arquitectura, tras estudiar el comportamiento de diversos materiales, determinó que Dekton reunía todos los requisitos indispensables y requeridos para el trabajo de rehabilitación de la fachada.

El proyecto se ha completado con la instalación de nuevos balcones en vidrio laminado-temperado, y puertas correderas de grandes dimensiones que incorporaron más de 40 m² privativos a cada unidad.

Cap Ferrat is an iconic residential building located on the exclusive Avenida Vieira Souto in Rio de Janeiro. Built in 1976, this iconic feature of the Brazilian neighborhood of Ipanema has a surface area of 2,000 m² and is 20 floors high. It includes flats, duplexes, garages, and spaces for public use.

Between 2013 and 2016, forty years after it was built, a remodelling project was carried out on the cladding of the building’s balconies due to the deterioration caused by the galvanic corrosion of the aluminum parts of the railings, which caused cracking of the original granite pieces that sheathed the perimeter beams of the tower’s six balconies. The galvanic corrosion was caused by the anchoring system of the aluminum railings, which used pieces of iron. The combination of different metals caused the corrosion. The resulting expansion of the mortar that held the granite pieces caused the original material to crack and break in many areas.

The studio Di Filippo Arquitectura studied the behavior of several types of materials and decided that Dekton brought together all the necessary and indispensable requirements for the rehabilitation work to be done on the building’s facade.

The project was completed with the installation of new balconies in laminated-tempered glass as well as large-format sliding doors that meant the addition of more than 40 m² (for private use) to each apartment unit.

Cuando se comenzó a trabajar en el proyecto de rehabilitación, la idea inicial estaba marcada por la necesidad de retirar las piezas originales de granito que estaban dañadas. Sin embargo, esto implicaba costes y plazos de ejecución inadmisibles para los propietarios. Ante esta situación, el gran desafío al que se enfrentó el equipo de trabajo fue el hecho de buscar un nuevo revestimiento que pudiera instalarse sobre el original y que supusiera una carga máxima de 90 kilogramos por metro cuadrado. Asimismo, debido a su proximidad al mar, el material elegido debía adecuarse estéticamente al ambiente exterior, ofreciendo una tonalidad suave y agradable para el entorno, así como ofrecer unas propiedades mecánicas que soportaran los deterioros que se suelen producir en este tipo de localizaciones.

Los arquitectos apostaron por Dekton para la fachada porque suponía el 50% de la carga admitida, por la posibilidad de fabricación de tablas de gran formato (3,2 m x 1,44 m) y a medida, por la precisión de corte en las piezas, por su comportamiento óptimo ante la erosión de la arena de la playa y el salitre, y por su alta resistencia a los rayos ultravioleta, su estabilidad al color o su alta resistencia a las manchas.

When work began on the rehabilitation project, the initial idea was determined by the need to remove the original damaged pieces.

However, this would have meant costs and timeframes that were unacceptable for the property owners. In view of this situation, the great challenge faced by the working team was to search for a new cladding that could be installed over the original and that would weigh no more than 90 kilograms per square meter. At the same time, due to the building’s proximity to the ocean, the material chosen needed to suit the aesthetics of the outside environment with soft, agreeable colors in tune with the surroundings, as well as to provide mechanical properties able to resist the deterioration common to this type of location.

Di Filippo Arquitectura chose Dekton by Cosentino for the facade because it represented 50% of the weight permissible, because it could be manufactured in large-format slabs (3.2 m x 1.44 m) and custom sizes, for the cutting precision of the pieces, for its ideal performance when faced with erosion caused by beach sand and salt residue, and other exceptional qualities such as its high resistance to UV radiation, color stability, and high stain resistance.

The Diner, la instalación diseñada por David Rockwell en colaboración con Cosentino, Surface y 2x4 para la Feria de diseño de Milán, ha sido galardonada Best Engagement en Fuorisalone 2018.

David Rockwell together with Cosentino Group, Surface, and the creative studio 2x4 presented The Diner, an installation that was awarded Best Engagement in Fuorisalone 2018, during Milan Design Week.

El equipo formado por el estudio estadounidense Rockwell Group, la compañía española Cosentino, el estudio de diseño 2x4 y la revista norteamericana Surface, presentan un espacio que nos traslada a la estética de los diners llevada a otro nivel. Este restaurante efímero con aire retro utiliza superficies Cosentino para resolver espacios singulares: la superficie cuarzo Silestone, en los colores Pearl Jasmine y Eternal Marquina, para dar forma a una barra central curvada de 14 metros de largo; la superficie ultracompacta Dekton Onix, con un acabado inspirado en el cemento erosionado, para la barra Roadside; y las tapas de mesa Dekton color Opera para las mesas de los Midwest, East Coast y West Coast diners.

The team formed by the American firm Rockwell Group, the Spanish company Cosentino, the design studio 2x4, and the American magazine Surface presents a pop-up space that transports us to the aesthetic of diners, bringing it to another level. This ephemeral restaurant with a retro aesthetic uses Cosentino surfaces to create unique spaces: Silestone quartz surfaces in Pearl Jasmine and Eternal Marquina tones for a central curved bar counter 14 meters long; Dekton Onix ultracompact surfaces, with a finish inspired in eroded cement, for the Roadside bar counter; and Dekton table tops in color Opera for the tables of the Midwest, East Coast, and West Coast diners.

16th Venice Architecture Biennale

Bajo el lema ‘FreeSpace’, esta edición de la bienal —comisariada por Farrell y McNamara— celebra la generosidad de la arquitectura que brinda bienestar a los ciudadanos a través de la calidad de sus espacios.

This year’s Biennale – curated by Farrell and McNamara under the motto ‘FreeSpace’ – celebrates the generosity of architecture that brings well-being to citizens through the quality of its spaces.

La 16ª Bienal de Arquitectura de Venecia, comisariada por las arquitectas Yvonne Farrell (Irlanda, 1951) y Shelley McNamara (Irlanda, 1952) —más conocidas como Grafton Architects—, ha abierto sus puertas bajo el título ‘FreeSpace’. La muestra defiende la capacidad de la arquitectura para ser generosa sin dejar de ser funcional al tiempo que invita a los 71 participantes a proponer su propia traducción del concepto ‘FreeSpace.’ Más allá del reconocimiento concedido a Kenneth Frampton, al Pabellón de Suiza y a la propuesta de Souto de Moura —premiados con el León de Oro—, esta edición será recordada por la primera participación del Vaticano en la Bienal.

La intervención está comisariada por Francesco Dal Co, que ha invitado a diez arquitectos de prestigio para diseñar otras tantas capillas diseminadas por un bosque de la isla de San Giorgio Maggiore. De todas ellas, destacan el homenaje de Souto de Moura a los antiguos monolitos; la estructura tensegrity formada por listones de madera de Norman Foster; el esqueleto de acero inoxidable con forma de cruz de Carla Juaçaba; y el volumen ‘estilo misión’ de Flores & Prats.

The 16th Venice Architecture Biennale, curated by Yvonne Farrell (Ireland, 1951) and Shelley McNamara (Ireland, 1952), otherwise known as Grafton Architects, has opened to the public under the title ‘FreeSpace.’ The exhibition emphasizes the capacity of architecture to be generous without ceasing to be functional, while inviting a total of 71 architects to put forward their own interpretations of the concept ‘FreeSpace.’ Apart from the honors bestowed on Kenneth Frampton, the Swiss Pavilion, and Souto de Moura’s proposal – recipients of the Golden Lion – this year’s Biennale will be remembered for being the first one ever to bring in the Vatican as a participant. The Holy See’s participation is curated by Francesco Dal Co, who has invited ten architects of distinction to design small chapels scattered within a woodland on the Venetian island of San Giorgio Maggiore.

Standing out among the resulting ten temples are Souto de Moura’s tribute to ancient monoliths; Norman Foster’s ensemble of slanting wooden slats held up by means of tensegrity; the proud cross-shaped skeleton of stainless steel by Carla Juaçaba; and the ‘mission style’ chapel by Flores & Prats.

Entrevistado en la casa y taller de Punta Nave en vísperas de su 80 aniversario, Renzo Piano repasa con Luis Fernández-Galiano los comienzos de su carrera y su última obra, el Centro Botín.

Luis Fernández-Galiano: Muchas gracias por recibirnos en tu casa, aquí en Punta Nave, cerca de Génova, la ciudad donde naciste hace casi ochenta años. Tu aniversario será en septiembre, y este es quizás un buen momento para repasar tu biografía. Recientemente, un asteroide ha sido bautizado con tu nombre. Sólo Buckminster Fuller había merecido antes un honor semejante, cuando se le dio su nombre a una molécula. Pero un asteroide es mucho más grande, ¡cinco kilómetros de diámetro!

Renzo Piano: Bueno, yo creo que todo el mundo tiene una estrella en alguna parte.

LFG: Me decías antes que todo el mundo necesita una especie de brújula interior, como la de los barcos, que pueda guiarnos en la vida. Yo diría que tus brújulas interiores son los edificios, por un lado, y la gente, por el otro. Construir para la gente. ¿Fueron estas tus dos referencias de juventud?

RP: Empleo la palabra ‘brújula’ porque me atraen los barcos, y me gusta la idea de una

brújula que no puedes ver porque está dentro de tu cuerpo y que, al estar bien protegida, no sufre la influencia perturbadora de los campos magnéticos. ‘Brújula’ se refiere a muchas cosas. Es algo que no está incorporado en algo, sino que se construye a sí mismo, algo que construyes tú desde la infancia y la adolescencia, a través de la experiencia.

Yo pasaba el tiempo libre con él, en la obra, sentado en la arena» LFG: ¿Empezaste a construir esta brújula interior en tu infancia? ¿Qué tipo de infancia tuviste? Tu padre era constructor.

RP: Un pequeño constructor, no uno grande, y esto supone una gran diferencia. Los grandes constructores son gente de negocios; los pequeños pisan el suelo real, son artesanos. Mi padre tenía entonces diez o veinte personas trabajando con él, y yo pasaba el tiempo libre con ellos, en la obra, sentado en la arena. Cuando creces en esa atmósfera, empiezas a construirte una pequeña brújula en algún sitio de tu interior, observando cómo

las cosas se transforman en un edificio: la arena, en un pilar; los ladrillos, en muros.

Pura magia para un niño de seis, siete u ocho años. Todo esto se interioriza. Otra influencia relevante fue el puerto de Génova, que es una ciudad mágica, donde nada toca tierra: los barcos flotan; los edificios levitan; y las grúas… ¡todo vuela!

LFG: Pero, además de esas influencias, está la de la familia. ¿Qué papel desempeñaron tus padres? ¿Querían que fueras arquitecto?

RP: Bueno, mi padre era constructor, así que me dijo que yo también debía serlo, aunque en realidad no le importara demasiado: era un hombre tolerante. Le dije a mi madre que quería ser arquitecto, y ella me respondió que tendría que explicárselo a mi padre. Así que hablé con él. ¿Por qué arquitecto?, me dijo, puedes ser constructor; un constructor es más que un arquitecto. Mi hermano, diez años mayor que yo, también lo era. La verdad es que yo no quería ser arquitecto, sino algo distinto a ellos. Eso es lo que pasa cuando tienes dieciocho años.

LFG: Así que dejaste a tu familia, dejaste Génova, para irte a estudiar a Milán.

RP: Antes había ido a Florencia, que es una ciudad hermosa, demasiado hermosa.

Interviewed in his home and workshop at Punta Nave on the eve of turning 80, Renzo Piano and Luis Fernández-Galiano comment on the first steps of his career and his latest work, the Botín Centre.

Luis Fernández-Galiano: Thank you so much for receiving us in your home here in Punta Nave, near Genoa, your hometown, where you were born almost eighty years ago.

You turn 80 in September, and this is perhaps a good moment to go through your biography.

An asteroid was recently named after you.

Only Buckminster Fuller has something like that, a molecule named after him. An asteroid is larger, 5 kilometers in diameter!

Renzo Piano: I think everybody has a star somewhere.

LFG: You were telling me before that everybody needs an inner compass, as ships do, to guide them in life. I would say that your inner compasses are building on the one hand, and people on the other. Building for people. Were these your two references in youth?

RP: I use the word ‘compass’ because I like the idea of boats, and I like the idea of a compass you don’t even see because it’s inside your body, and can’t be disturbed because it’s

well protected against magnetic fields. ‘Compass’ refers to many things. It’s not built-in, but self-built, something you build yourself, from childhood and teenhood, through experience.

LFG: You started to build this inner compass in childhood? What kind of a childhood did you have? Your father was a builder.

“My father was a builder and I would spend my free time on the construction site, sitting on sand” RP: A small builder, not a big builder.

That makes a big difference. Big builders are business people, small builders have real ground, they are craftsmen. My father had ten or twenty people working with him and I would spend my free time with them, on the construction site, sitting on sand. When you grow up in this atmosphere, you start to build a little compass somewhere, watching how things become a building, sand becoming a column, bricks becoming walls. Pure magic to a child of 6, 7, or 8. All this stays with you.

Another thing is the harbor, which is a magical city, where nothing touches ground. Ships float. Buildings levitate. And the cranes…

Everything flies!

LFG: But besides these influences, there’s the family. What role did your parents play?

Did they want you to be an architect?

RP: Well, my father was a builder so he told me I should be a builder, but it didn’t really matter, he was a very tolerant man. I told my mother that I thought I should be an architect. She said I would have to explain it to my father. So I went to him. He said, why an architect, you can be a builder. A builder is something more than an architect. My brother, ten years older, was also a builder. The truth, I didn’t really want to be an architect. I just wanted to run away from the family. That is what you want to do at 18.

LFG: So you left the family in Genoa, and went to Milan.

RP: And before that I went to Florence, which is beautiful, but too beautiful. And if you’re 18, 19, or 20 and learning about architecture, and you go to a place like Florence, you feel paralyzed by so much beauty and perfection. At some point I said, this is too

beautiful, I have to go to a place that’s much less beautiful. I went to Milan, which was less beautiful but more interesting, socially speaking. It was the beginning of student occupation of schools. I led a double life for at least two years. During the day I worked in an atelier, with Franco Albini, which was fantastic. I was learning to be an architect, drawing and all. In the evening I was joining in the occupation activities. But all these things contribute to the making of a little compass, a treasure in life. This self-compass has different names. And it’s not just about one’s profession. It’s about life, about people, about commitment, about politics in the real sense of the word. And there’s another thing, more difficult to touch on: sense of beauty. It’s not just about people, it’s also about color and light. If you grow up by the Mediterranean, you absorb something from this water. This sea is full of light, vibration, voices, and perfumes. Somebody said that the water makes things beautiful. It’s quite true.

LFG: When you say that your final home will not be in Paris or Genoa or New York, but on a boat, I can understand it, given your Mediterranean roots. But let me now ask

“With the arrogant attitude of thinking you know enough, you cannot grow up“ you something about your education. Did you learn more from Albini than from the teachers in Milan? You always speak of him with great devotion.

RP: I went to university really to ‘occupy,’ not to study, so yes, I learned more from Albini, but also because he was a real craftsman, someone who took pleasure in doing things, checking, controlling, making prototypes, making pieces. It was a good school, but you know, I wasn’t very good at school when I was a child, so I grew up with the idea that, by watching people, you learn. You don’t grow up with the arrogant attitude of thinking you know enough. On the contrary, you grow up with the idea that you have to learn because you’re not good enough.

LFG: So you were like a sponge with Franco Albini.

RP: Albini was one. Also, there’s a nonromantic aspect of things and events. I was born shortly before the war. I’m the child of a storm. When the war ended, I was 8 years old. So I grew up with this feeling that things would become better in time. Every day, every

week, every month, the street would be a bit cleaner, my father would come home a bit more relaxed, the food on the table was better. I grew up with the idea that the passage of time improves things. It’s mad, but it gives you the optimism you need to be an architect. I grew up with this idea, and even now I think that tomorrow will be better than today.

LFG: Yes, we all know that you can’t be an architect unless you’re an optimist.

RP: Optimistic from every point of view, especially if your work is to make places for people, where they can come and stay together. It’s about a civic duty. Then the world is a little better each time, it is. It’s little by little, drop by drop, day by day, but you’re doing something to make a better world. If you don’t believe in the capacity of architecture to change the world, if you don’t believe in the capacity of beauty, and civic life and civic values, to make a better world – for me it’s not just utopia, but a real possibility – then you had better change profession, you’re in the wrong one…

LFG: I want us to wrap up this conversation

discussing your recent project in Santander, where you have finished the Botín Centre.

That’s good news because in Spain before, you had only built a small base for Luna Rosa, in Valencia.

RP: I never really worked in Spain so I’m pleased I’ve been able to do this. It’s fantastic for a number of reasons. First, I learned to love Santander, which has a double identity: one towards the Atlantic, and one on the bay.

The first one is rougher, breezier, with the waves coming. The other one is like a lagoon with light which is very similar to the light of Venice. The Jardines de Pereda look south and at the bay… the light is fantastic. I saw the place after Emilio Botín came to us, and I was seduced by it… but also by the family, especially Emilio Botín. We became very close quite quickly. I never thought of him as a banker, but more as a dreamer. He was quite a tough banker, I guess, but he was also a man who was in love with education, with the new generations, with Santander… and with the idea of building something there. The Jardines de Pereda were separated from the bay by a

Y si tienes dieciocho, diecinueve o veinte años, estudias arquitectura y vas a un sitio como Florencia, acabas paralizado por tanta belleza y perfección. Así que me dije: esto es demasiado bonito; tengo que irme a un sitio que lo sea menos. Y me fui a Milán, que era desde luego una ciudad menos bella pero más interesante. Desde el punto de vista social, era la época de las ocupaciones de la universidad.

Llevé una doble vida durante al menos dos años. Durante el día, trabajaba en el estudio de Franco Albini, que era fantástico. Estaba aprendiendo a ser arquitecto, dibujando. Por la noche, me unía a las actividades políticas de ocupación. Todas estas cosas contribuyeron a la construcción de una pequeña brújula, un tesoro para toda la vida. Esta brújula del yo tiene diferentes nombres. No tiene que ver con la profesión que uno ejerce; tiene que ver con la vida, con la gente, con el compromiso, con la política en el sentido real del término.

Hay otra cuestión importante al respecto, más difícil: el sentido de la belleza. Este no tiene sólo que ver con la gente, sino con el color y la luz. Si creces en el Mediterráneo, absorbes algo de su agua. Es un mar lleno de luz, de

vibración, de voces y de perfumes. Alguien dijo una vez que el agua hace bellas las cosas.

LFG: Cuando dices que, en último término, tu casa no está en París, Génova o Nueva York, sino en un barco, puedo entenderlo, dadas tus raíces mediterráneas. Pero déjame ahora preguntarte por algo acerca de tu educación: ¿aprendiste más de Albini que de los profesores de Milán? Siempre hablas de él con gran devoción.

«Uno no debe educarse con la actitud arrogante de pensar que sabe suficiente» RP: En realidad, fui a la Universidad para ‘ocupar’, no para estudiar, así que puedo decir que aprendí más de Albini, aunque no sólo por eso. Albini era un artesano de verdad, que se complacía en hacer cosas, en comprobar, controlar, hacer prototipos, fabricar piezas.

Fue una buena escuela. Pero, sabes, de niño no fui muy buen estudiante, así que crecí con la idea de que, observando a la gente, podías

aprender. Uno no debe educarse con la actitud arrogante de pensar que sabe suficiente, sino con la idea de que tienes que aprender porque aún no eres lo suficientemente bueno.

LFG: Así que fuiste como una esponja durante tu etapa con Albini.

RP: Albini era único. Pero en mi educación influyó también un modo de ver las cosas y los hechos desde una posición no romántica.

Nací poco antes de la guerra. Soy hijo de una tormenta. Cuando la guerra terminó, tenía ocho años; así que crecí con la sensación de que las cosas podían mejorar. Cada día, cada semana, cada mes, la calle estaba un poco más limpia, mi padre podía volver a casa un poco más relajado y la comida sobre la mesa era mejor. Crecí con la idea de que el paso del tiempo mejora las cosas. Es una locura, pero esta creencia te da el optimismo que necesitas para ser arquitecto. Crecí con esta idea, e incluso ahora pienso que mañana será mejor que hoy.

LFG: Todos sabemos que no puedes ser arquitecto a menos que seas optimista.

RP: Optimista desde todos los puntos de vista, pero especialmente si tu trabajo es hacer

busy road, and the decision to take the traffic down so that the Jardines could reach the water became very important. It was made with the family, with Emilio, with the mayor, and of course with the community. So it was, again, a story of love for public space. It was not about rhetoric or about showing muscles.

Emilio Botín wanted something with a presence, but without standing out too much in the place. And that’s why we made the building fly… because we have the trees there, so when you come from the city, you go through the park, so by putting the building on columns, like trunks, the building actually disappears.

You see through the leaves, the ground floor is free. If it rains you go there and you’re in the shade if it’s a sunny day. Then you go up to the Plaza, a kind of space between the two buildings.

LFG: You imagine it full of people moving up and down…

RP: As soon as it stops raining in Santander, everybody goes to the Paseo. This building is right at the end of the Paseo, where it joins the Jardines… so of course people will be a

sort of fourth dimension. There are not just three dimensions, there’s a fourth one: movement. This is also true at the Pompidou, with the escalators. It’s about movement. Even the Whitney, with those stairs. It’s about people moving. What I expect from Santander, from the Botín Centre, is that the ground floor, the plaza, and the stairs will be full of people moving, resting in the bar or just sitting…

This will also be very good in the summer because we’re in the shade. And the magi-

“A good building is one that’s loved, adopted by people” cal thing there is the light. When you look southward, the light touches the water and rises. The skin of ceramic pieces, 270,000 pieces of nacre, mother-of-pearl, reflects the weather, the light. So it’s a bit organic, like a fish jumping out of the water.

LFG: With shiny scales…

RP: There’s a reason for this. We wanted the building sparkling and playing with the

light, gray light or sunny light. Even in the rain. We wanted a building that would have a kind of sparkling skin. So I cross my fingers.

I think it’s going to be loved… A good building is one that’s loved, adopted by people.

A place like this is what makes cities good places to stay in, because it’s about tolerance, sharing, values, enjoyment, community. This is important. The greatest joy of architects is to see their buildings loved by people. So, whether in Rome or New York or Paris or San Francisco, if I see people smiling and enjoying my building, it’s a joy.

LFG: That’s a good way to end this conversation about the points of the inner compass that has guided you since childhood. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s Le Petit Prince has an asteroid, as you do, so now you can join the little prince up in the stars…

RP: When they called me about this, you know, I asked if this was a safe asteroid. They said, of course, we’ve been checking for ten years, don’t worry. For how long, I asked.

They said, for at least two million years, the asteroid is safe!

lugares para la gente, lugares que la gente frecuenta y donde se reúne. Se trata de un deber cívico. El mundo puede ser un poquito mejor cada día; es poco a poco, gota a gota, día a día como se va mejorando el mundo.

Si no crees en la capacidad de la arquitectura para cambiar el mundo, si no crees en la capacidad de la belleza, de la vida y de los valores cívicos para construir un mundo mejor —para mí, esto no es una utopía, sino una posibilidad real—, entonces es mejor que cambies de profesión porque estás en la equivocada…

LFG: Me gustaría terminar esta conversación hablando de tu reciente proyecto en Santander, el Centro Botín. Se trata de una buena noticia, porque en España hasta ahora sólo habías construido la pequeña base del equipo Luna Rossa en Valencia.

RP: Nunca había trabajado de verdad en España, así que estoy agradecido por haber podido hacer el Centro Botín. Es fantástico por una serie de razones. Primero, porque he aprendido a amar Santander, que tiene una doble identidad: una, hacia el Cantábrico; la otra, hacia la bahía. La primera es más áspera, expuesta a los vientos y las olas; la otra es como un lago con una luz semejante a la de Venecia: una luz metafísica. Los Jardines de Pereda miran hacia el sur y hacia la bahía, y la luz es fantástica. Vi el lugar después de que Emilio Botín nos hiciera el encargo.

Botín me sedujo; también la familia, pero especialmente él. Simpatizamos muy rápido.

Nunca le vi como un banquero, sino como un soñador. Supongo que como banquero era un tipo duro, pero era también alguien enamorado de la educación, de la gente joven, de Santander… y de la idea de construir algo allí.

Los Jardines de Pereda estaban separados de la bahía por una vía con mucho tráfico, y la decisión fue enterrarla de manera que los

Jardines pudieran extenderse hasta el mar: una idea fundamental del proyecto, que se consensuó con la familia, con Emilio, con el alcalde y, por supuesto, con la opinión pública. De nuevo, una historia de amor por el espacio público. El proyecto no tiene que ver con la retórica y con exhibir musculatura.

Emilio Botín quería algo con presencia, pero que no se impusiera al lugar. Por eso hicimos que el edificio volara sobre el suelo, porque había muchos árboles, y así, viniendo de la ciudad, al atravesar el parque, se pueden ver los pilares sobre los que se levanta el edificio como si fueran troncos, y el edificio desapa-

«Un buen edificio es aquel que acaba siendo querido, adoptado por la gente» rece. Puedes mirar a través de las copas de los árboles; el plano del suelo está libre. Si llueve, te puedes cobijar bajo el edificio; lo mismo en un día soleado. Después, subes a la plaza elevada...

LFG: Uno se imagina la plaza y las escaleras llenas de gente, moviéndose arriba y abajo…

RP: En cuanto deja de llover en Santander, todo el mundo se va al Paseo. Este edificio está bien situado al final del Paseo, donde este se junta con los Jardines… La gente es como una cuarta dimensión. No hay sólo tres dimensiones; hay una cuarta: el movimiento. Esto también es cierto en el Pompidou; ocurre en las escaleras mecánicas. Incluso en el Whitney. Y es algo que tiene que ver con la gente moviéndose. Lo que espero que ocurra en Santander es que la planta baja del Centro Botín, la plaza elevada y las escaleras estén llenas de gente moviéndose de un lado

a otro, descansando en el bar o simplemente sentándose allí. Esto funcionará muy bien en el verano, porque habrá sombra. Y la cosa más mágica será la luz: cuando miras al sur, la luz se refleja en el agua. La piel de piezas cerámicas —270.000 piezas nacaradas— refleja el tiempo atmosférico, la luz. Así que el edificio acaba siendo un poco orgánico, como un pez saltando del agua.

LFG: Con sus escamas brillantes…

RP: Hay una razón para esto. Queríamos que el edificio brillara y jugase con la luz, ya fuera una luz gris o de verano. Incluso cuando lloviese. Queríamos un edificio que tuviera una especie de piel centelleante. Así que cruzo los dedos. Creo que el edificio va a gustar…

Un buen edificio es aquel que acaba siendo querido, adoptado por la gente. Lugares como estos son los que hacen que las ciudades sean buenos sitios para vivir, porque están relacionados con la tolerancia, la convivencia, los valores, el disfrute, la comunidad. Esto es importante. La mayor dicha de los arquitectos es comprobar que sus edificios son apreciados por la gente. Ya sea en Roma, Nueva York, París o San Francisco, si veo a la gente sonriendo y disfrutando en mis edificios, para mí es la mayor satisfacción.

LFG: Es una buena manera de terminar esta conversación sobre los aspectos de esa brújula interior que te ha guiado desde la infancia. El principito de Antoine de Saint-Exupéry tenía un asteroide, como tú, así que, de algún modo, puedes unirte a él en las estrellas…

RP: Sabes, cuando me llamaron por este tema, pregunté si se trataba de un asteroide seguro. Por supuesto, dijeron, llevamos diez años comprobando su estado, no te preocupes. ¿Durante cuánto tiempo será seguro?, insistí. ¡Durante al menos los próximos dos millones de años!
