WELCOME! Creating community takes many forms. In our Department it is most closely seen by the programs and services that we offer to the public. But beyond that, it is measured by the small day-to-day interactions that our staff have with individual members of the community. One of the greatest measures of our success is receiving positive feedback from you. We often share these comments with the entire staff to help us see the difference we make. I recently received one that I wanted to share here: “So earlier in the evening a patron came by to say thank you to the staff of the library for opening their doors to him. From what I understood the patron had been struggling to find a permanent place but had felt welcome to come by the library. The patron expressed that the library has been a safe and welcoming place to use. Now they are on their way to finally settling down and just wanted to thank the library for giving him somewhere to stay, especially during the tough seasons. From his expression it looked like he was really grateful.” I am proud that our Library and Recreation staff regularly receive this kind of appreciation. It means that we are living up to our values and demonstrating compassion as well as professionalism. As we continue to evolve as an organization, these touchstones help us to stay true to our Mission. And this season we are excited to offer a variety of programs in an environment where all are welcome. Here are a few highlights: •

Our annual Eggstravaganza will be held at all Community Centers on April 4 from 10 am-Noon. Festivities include Spring-time games, activities, and egg hunts for all ages.

•

Our Pre-Ballet Dance Class is now offering opportunities for younger participants; ages 3-7 years

•

Spring Camps will be offered March 9-20 at Community Centers.

•

Opening Day and Pixie Woods 66th Birthday Celebration will be on May 2. The event will include face painting, birthday cake, entertainment, special guests and more!

•

Winter Reading: Now in its second year, the Winter Reading program will be continuing through the month of January. Thank you to the Stockton Heat for sponsoring this program. Children 0-12 years old read 10 books, and hand in a reading log at any library to be eligible for a number of different prizes with a grand prize of a ride on the Zamboni during a hockey game on February 15. Last year over 11,000 books were read.

VITA: A free tax preparation service will be held at the Cesar Chavez and Fair Oaks Libraries. Volunteers will be the Cesar Chavez Library on Tuesdays, 10 am-7 pm from January 28 through April 7. They will be at the Fair Oaks Library on Thursdays, 10 am-7 pm from January 30 through April 7. Appointments are needed. Check the library’s online calendar for details.

•

In Conversation: Building Community 101 will be at the Cesar Chavez Library on Monday, March 16 at 6:00 pm. Lori Gilbert will interview Martina Morio and Miguel Guillen about their efforts in Yosemite Village. Come and join the conversation!

RECREATION MEMBERSHIPS FITNESS AND BASKETBALL DROP-IN MEMBERSHIP $10 – MONTHLY

This membership provides access to any of our community center fitness rooms and basketball courts. Fitness Rooms can be used during normal hours of operation, and basketball court access is from 9am–1pm daily. Our fitness rooms are equipped with various cardio and weight equipment. This membership is for Arnold Rue, Stribley, and Van Buskirk Centers.

SENIOR MEMBERSHIP 50+ $25 – ANNUAL FEE (JULY – JUNE)

Discover all the activities, events, and classes offered at our Community Centers for our senior community to stay active and healthy. Become a part of our vibrant senior community for only $25 annually. Memberships can be purchased at any City of Stockton Community Center, and allows the membership to be used at Arnold Rue, Oak Park, Stribley, and Van Buskirk Centers. Enjoy billiards, fitness room access, dance and aerobic activities, crafts, and a number of senior specific classes.

SEWING A class for all ages and skill levels. Learn to cut fabric, measure, sew by hand and use a sewing machine while also learning sewing terminology. All supplies will be provided. Bring an attitude ready to learn and create. Must have three students to hold class.

DANCE CLASSES BALLROOM BOOTCAMP This fun, interactive class will teach you need to know to be confident on and off the dance floor. Covers smooth dances (Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot), Latin dances (Salsa, Cha Cha, Rumba), and Club dances (East Coast, swing, nightclub two-step, country two-step.). No partner required. Receive semi-private instruction at a group price. Perfect for every skill level.

BELLY DANCING Learn the traditional art of belly dance (Raks Sharki). This class will concentrate on the five sections of a belly dance routine as well as the history of the dance. Great exercise for the body and soul.

MINI MOVERS Mini Movers Sports Development Program teaches children (ages 2-5) the basic skills necessary to play organized sports, while they work one-on-one and spend quality time with their parents. The program focuses on teaching children and their parents basic sports mechanics without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Sessions are held once a week for six weeks, and each week the exercises become increasingly more difficult as the class progresses and the children show improvement. Train with nationally-ranked athletes of all ages, get in shape and improve balance, agility, hand-eye coordination and hand-foot coordination, fast thinking, and problem-solving. Each class accommodates up to 12 students. All fencing equipment is provided, including electronic scoring equipment. Participants should arrive in sneakers, long warm-up pants, and a t-shirt. COACHES FOR ALL YOUTH SPORTS

Become a volunteer and help mentor the next generation. We need men and women who are interested in coaching kids to not only play a variety of sports, but to also develop their character through teamwork, cooperation, communication, and modeling good values.

- Coaching clinics and resources are provided, no experience necessary! - Team Up! Coach alongside another parent or friend. - Coaches receive a 25% discount towards their child's registration!

COACHES' COMMITMENT T ime commitment is one hour of afternoon/evening practice per week, one hour game on Saturdays, and a Coaches meeting to receive training and resources. Set a practice schedule that works for you! Email sportsandfields@stocktonca.gov or call (209) 937-5544.

Learn judo, an Olympic sport and martial art that was developed in the late 19th century by Japanese educator Dr. Jigoro Kano. Judo uses throwing and grappling techniques to take down opponents. BENEFITS OF JUDO • • • • • •
