HAPPY NEW YEAR! WE ARE SO GLAD YOU ARE HERE.

As we say goodbye to 2021, I want to take a moment to thank the Community Services team of dedicated staff who demonstrate – on a daily basis – our mission of “building resilient communities by cultivating healthy bodies and curious minds.” Over the past year, they welcomed the opportunities to serve including, but certainly not limited to distributing food at the community centers, circulating tablets and hotspots so residents can have reliable Internet at home, presenting community events such as the annual Tree Lighting in December, and opening warming centers during the very cold nights. This is what community service is all about.

New programs, services and resources are constantly being added to our slate of offerings – all with the intent of improving the quality of life of our residents. A few I wish to highlight for you are: 

Adult kickball starts March 23 and all games will be played at Louis Park Softball Complex. Come relive those fun childhood recess memories!



Library card holders have free access to Skillshare, an online learning community with thousands of classes for creative and curious people.



Pixie Woods will celebrate its 68th birthday and opening day on Saturday, May 7. I highly recommend a visit to this beautiful park, especially if it’s been years since your last one!



Thanks to a grant from the State Library, the Library is circulating Tech Kits (laptop, hotspot, and cords) for community members to connect at home.

TRAINING WHEELS

This early literacy vehicle travels to preschools and daycare centers throughout San Joaquin County. Each visit includes a special storytime where children ages 0-5 and their teachers and caregivers enjoy stories, songs, and rhymes. This program is funded largely by a California Library Literacy Services grant. To schedule a Training Wheels visit to your preschool or daycare, call 209-937-8143.

A storytime kit is a collection of diverse books based on a certain topic with reading tips and songs/rhymes to be shared with children.

REGISTER HERE YOUTH BASKETBALL The Community Services Department offers safe, fun, and friendly youth sports programs at schools, playgrounds, and community centers. We provide recreational, rather than competitive, programs for our youth from Pre-K-8th grade. Participants learn to engage in team sports while functioning in a positive environment. These fun leagues will help participants learn the fundamentals of basketball. All dates and times will be determined by enrollment and grade.

Winter Season Registration: November 1, 2021-January 2, 2022 Late Registration: January 2-22, 2022 Games will be played at Rue, Seifert, Stribley, or Van Buskirk Community Centers.

These workshops aim to provide a fun, skill-growing, structured training environment through games and exercises. Parents will have the opportunity to meet our team of amazing staff, volunteer coaches and get a feel for City of Stockton recreational sports.

YOUTH SPRING INDOOR VOLLEYBALL Bump, set, spike! The City of Stockton youth volleyball program provides every child from 3rd to 8th grade a chance to learn and play volleyball in a fun, safe, and supervised environment.

One of the main tenets of the program is to encourage children to do the best with their abilities while expanding their skillset acquiring a deeper understanding of the rules and fundamentals of the sport. Coaches use positive reinforcement while building confidence, skills, and self-esteem in each child.

JUNIOR GIANTS

Junior Giants, the flagship program of the Giants Community Fund, is a free, noncompetitive coed baseball and softball program for boys and girls ages 5-18 years old. Beyond teaching the fundamentals of the game, Junior Giants focuses on the Four Bases of Character Development – Confidence, Integrity, Leadership and Teamwork – and offers programs in Health, Education and Bullying Prevention.

Become a volunteer coach and help mentor the next generation.

The City of Stockton needs men and women who are interested in coaching kids to not only play a variety of sports, but to also develop their character through teamwork, cooperation, communication, and modeling good values.

REGISTER HERE ADULT SPORTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR If you are looking to be an active adult, join one of our outstanding leagues. We offer Basketball, Softball, Volleyball and Kickball league for those 18 and over. All leagues offer divisions for all skill levels, and you can even sign up as an individual (Free Agent). Indoor sport games will be played at Stribley, Rue, or Van Buskirk Community Centers. Outdoor sport games will be played at Louis Park or Misty Holt-Singh Softball Complexes.

We continue to reenergize the softball community season after season, by offering improved leagues – on the region’s most iconic natural fields – Louis Park Softball Complex. Whether novice or skilled we have a league for your team to join. Lace your cleats, grab your gloves and create a team or register as a free agent to play in our Spring, Summer, or Fall seasons.

You don’t need a team, and no skill is required! Memberships fees are $10 a month. Days, times, and locations vary by sport, please contact each community center for schedules.

The City offers several camps during school breaks for spring, summer, fall, and winter.

Our trained recreation leaders create a safe, fun environment with personal attention in small groups. Campers meet new friends, play sports and games, create crafts, and enjoy social time. Scholarships are available; please request when submitting your registration form.

SENIOR MEMBERSHIP www.stocktonca.gov/seniors Discover all the activities, events, and classes offered at our Community Centers for our senior community to stay active and healthy. Become a part of our vibrant senior community for only $25 annually. Memberships can be purchased at any City of Stockton Community Center and allows the membership to be used at Arnold Rue, Oak Park, Stribley, and Van Buskirk Centers. Enjoy billiards, fitness room access, dance and aerobic activities, crafts, and several senior specific classes.

FITNESS MEMBERSHIP This membership provides access to any of our community center fitness rooms and basketball courts. Fitness Rooms can be used during normal hours of operation, and basketball court access is from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. daily. Our fitness rooms are equipped with various cardio and weight equipment. This membership is for Arnold Rue, Stribley, and Van Buskirk Centers.

Fitness Memberships $10 monthly.
