The strength of an organization lies in its ability to press on in service to its mission when the environment around is unstable and unpredictable. Our mission is “building resilient communities by cultivating healthy bodies and curious minds.” The Community Services team has spent the past many months listening and responding to the needs of the community, planning and delivering programs, and finding new ways to support the community during this unprecedented time.

At our community centers, the Recreation team distributed food to those in need. The Recreation and Library teams stepped up and delivered virtual programming to provide activities and resources to our community members. And we deployed new services! Teens and adults can now participate in monthly Esports competitions, and community members wanting access to electronic resources can call and obtain a Library E-card over the phone.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

We have many wonderful activities planned for Fall 2021. Here are just a few of the highlights: 

Gather up your friends and join the Adult Volleyball recreational league.

Registration ends September 11 with games starting September 29.



Holiday Sports Camps for youth will debut at Stribley Community Center on November 15. Each week will feature a different sport, including indoor soccer, tennis, volleyball, and basketball.



Virtual Book Buddies is available through the school year for young children needing help with reading. Go to www.ssjcpl.org and click on the Programs tab.

In the spirit of community, we have two amazing volunteer opportunities available for adults. Consider helping mentor the next generation and signing up to be a coach for youth sports. For more information, call (209) 937-5544.

We are also looking for tutors for the Adult Literacy program to give a few hours a week to help an adult learner meet his/her literacy goals. For more information, call (209) 937-7778.

Not only have we been busy planning and delivering programs and services, but the Department has also launched a new logo that better illustrates who we are.

The tag line “community grows here” is our commitment to you, our neighbors, to provide healthy activities and lifelong learning opportunities.

LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH (SEPTEMBER) WINTER READING (DECEMBER 21-JANUARY 22) STORYTIME KITS TRAINING WHEELS This early literacy vehicle travels to preschools and daycare centers throughout San Joaquin County. Each visit includes a special storytime where children ages 0-5 and their teachers and caregivers enjoy stories, songs, and rhymes. This program is funded largely by a California Library Literacy Services grant. To schedule a Training Wheels visit to your preschool or daycare, call 209-937-8143.

YOUTH SPORTS

REGISTER HERE YOUTH BASKETBALL – WINTER The Community Services Department offers safe, fun, and friendly youth sports programs at schools, playgrounds, and community centers. We provide recreational, rather than competitive, programs for our youth from K-8th grade. Participants learn to participate in groups sports in a positive environment. Our youth sports leagues help participants learn fundamentals and sportsmanship. All dates and times will be determined by enrollment and grade.

Registration for Winter Basketball: November 1, 2021-January 2, 2022. Games will be played at Rue, Seifert, Stribley, or Van Buskirk Community Centers.

Registration fee: $48 per player or $276 per team.

HOLIDAY SPORTS CAMPS – NEW FOR 2021 Participants may sign up for a sports specific camp to learn and improve their skills.

Each week – November 15 to December 16 (no camp during Thanksgiving week) – will cover a different sport that includes Indoor Soccer, Tennis, Volleyball, and Basketball. Camps will be conducted by knowledgeable and skilled instructors and will be held at Stribley Community Center. Registration fee is $40 per week and a t-shirt is included.

Indoor Soccer - November 15 to 18, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Tennis - November 29 to December 2, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Volleyball - December 6 to 9, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Basketball - December 13 to 16, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR

YOUTH COACHES FOR ALL SPORTS

Become a volunteer coach and help mentor the next generation.

The City of Stockton needs men and women who are interested in coaching kids to not only play a variety of sports, but to also develop their character through teamwork, cooperation, communication, and modeling good values.

Training/coaching clinics and resources are provided, no experience necessary!

Team Up! Coach alongside another parent or friend.

Coaches receive a 25% discount towards their child’s registration!

Background check required.

Coaches’ Commitment: Time commitment is one hour of afternoon/evening practice per week, one hour game on Saturdays, and a Coaches meeting to receive training and resources. Set a practice schedule that works for you!

REGISTER HERE ADULT SPORTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR If you are looking to be an active adult, join one of our outstanding leagues. We offer Basketball, Softball, Volleyball and Kickball league for those 18 and over. All leagues offer divisions for all skill levels. Indoor sport games will be played at Stribley, Rue, or Van Buskirk Community Centers. Outdoor sport games will be played at Louis Park or Misty Holt-Singh Softball Complexes.

ADULT BASKETBALL Start working on that jump shot. Gather up your friends and co-workers and join our recreational 5-on-5 basketball league for men and women 18+. No skill required. Team registration fee $344.

Fall Season registration ends September 18.

Manager’s meeting is at 6:30 p.m. on September 21 at Stribley Community Center.

Games start Tuesday, September 28, locations may vary at Rue, Stribley and Van Buskirk Community Centers.

Winter Season sign up by December 11 and save $25! Registration ends December 23.

ADULT VOLLEYBALL Bump It! Set It! Spike It! Gather up your friends and co-workers and join our recreational 6-on-6 volleyball league. No skill required. Team registration fee $184.50.

Fall Season registration ends September 18.

FREE AGENTS - ALL SPORTS Don’t have a team, or not enough players to make a full team? No problem! This is the perfect place for you. Sign up as a Free Agent and let the City of Stockton find a team for you! We offer a variety of sports throughout the year including Basketball, Softball, Volleyball and Kickball!

Indoor sport games will be played at Stribley, Rue, or Van Buskirk Community Centers.

Outdoor sport games will be played at Louis Park or Misty Holt-Singh Softball Complexes.

FALL TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT Events are round robin format followed by single elimination playoff at Arnold Rue Community Center. Guaranteed at least three games. Register by November 5. Tournament starts November 13 at 9 a.m. Registration Fee is $20 per participant, must be 18 years of age or older to enter.

ESPORTS Venture into the world of electronic sports gaming or more commonly known as Esports.

Participate in online monthly tournaments utilizing Xbox and PlayStation gaming systems.

Divisions for all ages (adults, teens and youth) featuring games of Madden 22 Football, MLB The Show Baseball, Rocket League and Super Smash Bros.

Registration fee $10 per tournament due by the 3rd Monday of each month, tournaments start on the 4th Monday of each month.

Teens have access to basketball, table tennis, video games, board games, foosball, billiards, and a variety of other recreation activities. All students must have a current waiver on file at each community center they plan to attend.

SENIOR MEMBERSHIP Discover all the activities, events, and classes offered at our Community Centers for our senior community to stay active and healthy. Become a part of our vibrant senior community for only $25 annually. Memberships can be purchased at any City of Stockton Community Center and allows the membership to be used at Arnold Rue, Oak Park, Stribley, and Van Buskirk Centers. Enjoy billiards, fitness room access, dance and aerobic activities, crafts, and several senior specific classes.

FITNESS MEMBERSHIP This membership provides access to any of our community center fitness rooms and basketball courts. Fitness Rooms can be used during normal hours of operation. Our fitness rooms are equipped with various cardio and weight equipment. This membership is for Arnold Rue, Stribley, and Van Buskirk Centers. Fitness Memberships $10 monthly.
