WELCOME! Welcome to the Winter/Spring 2019 edition of the Community Services Activity Guide! This is your definitive guide to all the great things going on in the community for you and your family this season. Our Activity Guide is packed with new offerings and events that are educational, healthy and affordable. We understand how important it is to help our families grow and evolve, and do it on a budget, too. Some of this season’s highlights include: •

Our first ever Winter Reading Program from December 1, 2018 – January 31, 2019. Since it’s hockey season we’ve partnered with the Stockton Heat. Kids ages 0-12 who read 10 books will be added to the Winter Reading “Smart as a Fox” List for recognition on social media and a chance to win a voucher for two to the Stockton Heat Hockey Game on Friday, March 1, 2019, at 7pm against the San Diego Gulls. Read 30+ books to be entered into the grand prize drawing to ride on the Zamboni that same night!

•

On January 12, 2019 from 10am–1pm, we will be holding an Opportunity Fair for youth at the Stribley Community Center. Learn about part-time jobs, volunteer opportunities and be interviewed on site for jobs and volunteering with Library, Recreation, Municipal Utilities, Police Cadet and Sentinel programs. This is a great event for first-time jobseekers.

Black History Month:

 Screenings of the movies Hidden Figures on February 6 and Selma on February 20 at the Ripon Library.

 Black History Month Scavenger Hunt at the Cesar Chavez Library, February 22 at 3:30pm.

•

Women’s History Month:

 March 18, 3:30pm: We March On. Be mesmerized and entertained by professional storytellers B.Z. Smith and Peggy as we celebrate Women’s History Month.

•

We will hold our free Eggstravaganza event at all community centers on Saturday, April 13 from 10am–12pm.

Bring the whole family to our egg hunt with lots of prizes. Check out the bounce houses, face painting, crafts and more!

•

Pixie Woods opening day is May 4, 2019! Group field trips are available Thursdays and Fridays beginning in May. Contact Pixie Woods staff at 209.937.7354 to make reservations.

We will also be continuing public outreach meetings for the new Library/Community Center to be built on Morada and West Lanes. Our next meeting is scheduled for January 24. We will be sharing draft designs of the new building and asking for your feedback. For more information visit the project site.

As you can see, there is a lot of momentum in Community Services. That momentum exists because we are enthusiastic about Stockton’s potential, which is really the potential we see in each of you. I hope the opportunities in this new edition of our Activity Guide help you to make time for fun, family, and enjoying being part of this diverse and close-knit community.

RECREATION MEMBERSHIPS FITNESS AND BASKETBALL DROP-IN MEMBERSHIP $10 – MONTHLY

This membership provides access to any of our community center fitness rooms and basketball courts. Fitness Rooms can be used during normal hours of operation, and basketball court access is from 9AM–1PM daily. Our fitness rooms are equipped with treadmills, elliptical machines, recumbent and upright bikes, and some free weights. This membership is for Arnold Rue, Stribley, and Van Buskirk Centers.

SENIOR MEMBERSHIP

$25 – ANNUAL FEE (JULY – JUNE) Discover all the activities, events, and classes offered at our Community Centers for our senior community to stay active and healthy. Become a part of our vibrant senior community for only $25 annually. Memberships can be purchased at any City of Stockton Community Center, and allows the membership to be used at Arnold Rue, Oak Park, Stribley, and Van Buskirk Centers. Enjoy billiards, fitness room access, dance and aerobic activities, crafts, and a number of senior specific classes.

Studies consistently show that seniors who keep their minds stimulated are better able to ward off cognitive impairment as they age. Among the best ways to do this are creative activities.

CAMPS WINTER (Ages 5-12) Children will experience a different theme each week through a variety of activities and hands-on experiences. Camps must have a minimum of 10 children enrolled one week prior to camp start date.

MINI MOVERS, START SMART Start Smart Sports Development Program teaches children (ages 3-5) the basic skills necessary to play organized sports, while they work one-on-one and spend quality time with their parents. The program focuses on teaching children and their parents basic sports mechanics without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Sessions are held once a week for six weeks, and each week the exercises become increasingly more difficult as the class progresses and the children show improvement. Parents must accompany the child.

SPORTS–ADULTS FENCING Train with nationally-ranked athletes of all ages, get in shape and improve balance, agility, hand-eye coordination and hand-foot coordination, fast thinking, and problem-solving. Each class accommodates up to 12 students. All fencing equipment is provided, including electronic scoring equipment. Arrive in sneakers, long warm-up pants, and a T-shirt. Class options are once, twice or three times per week or drop in (Tue, Wed, Sat). Youth (6-12) class times are T, W 4-5:15pm, Sat 12-1:15pm. Teen and Adult class times are T, W 6:-7:30pm, Sat 1:30-3:30pm. Price increases if paid after the first of the month.
