GREEN ANALYSIS The Empower Cruise ship was designed with the environment in mind. There is not yet a LEED for Ships, although LEED for Commercial Interiors was used as a guide line to achieve the greenest vessel possible. The categories focused on were Sustainable Site, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources and Indoor Environmental

LOBBY

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Coryn Carr | Empower Cruise Ship | Fall 2011

The lobby is the most impressionable part of any hotel, in this case the hotel is on water. The lobby sets the mood and expectations for the rest of the vessel. The goal for the lobby was to make it fun, exciting and place where individuals can sit and converse with others as well as get all the information needed to navigate the Empower. The lobby is located in the center of the ship on the main embarkation deck. It has two reception desks that has a custom drop ceiling that mimics the waves of the seas. The seating the lobby area is centered around the grand staircase that leads up to deck 6, where you can find the fine dining and the promenade.

LOBBY BAR

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Coryn Carr | Empower Cruise Ship | Fall 2011

The lobby bar is fun and energizing. The color palate gets the creativity flowing. The lobby bar is located on the main deck adjacent to the lobby. The chocolate cork flooring boarders the lobby and circulation areas is carried into the lobby bar as the main flooring to connect the In the lobby bar there is a custom bar and custom bar stool. The bar stool was inspired by the traditional captains chair with a modern twist. It is constructed out of wiggle wood, recycled aluminum and then upholstered. The bar was inspired by the traditional ships steering wheel. The top of the bar is made from a resin that resembles the ocean waves. The arms of the bar are of the same resin and epoxyed to the bar top.

SPA

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Coryn Carr | Empower Cruise Ship | Fall 2011

The spa is located on the deck 12 on the bow of the ship over looking the ocean. it is a place for the passengers to relax and pamper themselves. The color palette used on in the spa is warm but calming. The spa features a custom 3form wall and a pond that flows through the reception and mediation areas. In the spa there is a custom wall made of a 3form material that is illuminated on both side of the wall with an LED strip. The interior of the wall is textured which caused the light to be bounced all around and creates a unique feature in the room. The wall separates the reception area of the spa from the meditation area. The wall is translucent enough to still let natural day light flow through the entire space. Under the wall is a pond that connects the two room and connects one back to nature.

Green at a Glance Existing structure was taken into account | All lights in the spa are either LED’s or CFL’s | Maximum daylight was utilized | The material used in the space has some recycled content | All paints are have ZERO VOC | The water in the pond is salt water for the ocean

GYMNASIUMS

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Coryn Carr | Empower Cruise Ship | Fall 2011

The multifunctional gymnasium is located on the Deck 5 almost dead center in the vessel. Through research I found that the center of the vessel is where you feel the least amount of motion. With a gymnastic gym being on board this was a must for the safety of the gymnast and other sports that will be taking place in the room. The gymnasium can be a gymnastics gym, basketball court, soccer field or ice skating rink

MEDITATION

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Coryn Carr | Empower Cruise Ship | Fall 2011

The meditation deck is located on deck 14, the top of the vessel adjacent to the solar deck also located on deck 14. The meditation deck is a place for relaxing and enjoying the fresh are and day light of the open seas. The meditation deck also acts as a green roof for the vessel and reduces the green house gases. The plants are all watered with gray water recycled from all the water usage on board. The ground on the meditation deck is soluble and acts like a bioswals and catches all the rainfall then is treated on board enough to be drinking water.

Green at a Glance Both of these spaces have maximum natural light | All water is supplied from the ocean | Bioswale on meditation deck to catch and treat rain water | Vegetation on both decks to reduce green house gases

POOL

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Coryn Carr | Empower Cruise Ship | Fall 2011

The pool is located on deck 11. It is surrounded with lounge chairs as well as cabanas. The deck above looks over the pool. There is a waterfall that connects the two decks together. In the middle of the pool there is an island that offers another place for relaxation. All the water that supply the pool and the waterfall is salt water brought in from the ocean.

SUITE A & B

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Coryn Carr | Empower Cruise Ship | Fall 2011

Shown on this page are two layouts. All rooms have a small kitchen and plenty of natural day light. There are two color pallets that were use in the rooms, a warm and a cool pallet.

There are 6 different layouts of stateroom on board. All room are a little different but share many similarities. All rooms were designed around the existing patios. Every room as a patio over looking the ocean.

A lot of research and planning went into design a 330,000 square foot cruise ship. I conducted many interviews, studied several case studies and did numerous virtual site visits since ports are not readily available to use in Colorado.

Interviews

RESEARCH

Throughout the interviewing process safety and function seem to be the key points of designing a cruise ship. I interviewed several different types of people to a well rounded idea of what would meet every ones needs on a large scale. I started with professionals that currently work or has worked in the past on cruise ships. They gave me a lot of insight on the codes that need to be adhered to and the function that ships must have to circulate people and goods aboard. I then interviewed individuals that have traveled on a cruise ship and others that would be future cruisers. From these interviews I got a lot of information on what amenities the common consumers would like to have aboard. The interviewing process was crucial to the designing process and all throughout the design the findings of these interviews can be seen.

Case Studies To get a better understanding of how cruise ships work currently, I studied many case studies in many different areas of design. I look into a case study on GREEN ships, accessibility on board, how stereo systems work and lighting design. Throughout these case studies I took the most important aspects and applied them to the design of Empower.

Site Observations Since Colorado is a land locked state and we do not have ports available to use I did all my site observation virtually. I looked at many different sizes of cruise ships. I focused on the room layouts of staterooms and how they function, the amenities that were on board and the circulation patterns of these cruise ship. The site observations helped me decide on the size of cruise ship that would most benefit my design plan. Coryn Carr | Empower Cruise Ship | Fall 2011
