From Us! A Few Words A Look Inside The Guide

Welcome to the new and improved Parks & Recreation Activity Guide!

Over the past year, we heard from many of you through our community survey and conversations with participants, families, and residents. Your feedback helped shape this redesigned guide, and we’re excited to share the results.

One of the most common requests was for an Activity Guide that was easier to navigate and more convenient to use. In response, we’ve created a more condensed format with fewer pages, improved organization of activities, highlighted community events, upgraded paper quality, and advertisements moved to the back of the guide. Our goal was to create a cleaner, more user-friendly resource that helps you quickly find the programs, classes, events, and recreation opportunities that interest you most.

Now it’s time to explore! Take a look at everything we have to offer this fall and winter. Whether you’d like to get outdoors, discover a new hobby, take a dance class, try fencing, join a trail running group, create art, learn a new skill, or enjoy one of our many community events, we truly believe there’s something for every interest, age, and ability. From toddlers to older adults, beginners to experienced enthusiasts, Parks & Recreation is here to help you stay active, connected, and inspired.

Thank you to everyone who shared their ideas and suggestions. Your feedback directly influenced these improvements, and we’re grateful for your continued support. We hope you enjoy the new look of the Activity Guide and discover a new favorite program, class, or event this season. We look forward to seeing you this fall and winter!

Volunteer Spotlight

The Heart of Parks & Recreation

At Corvallis Parks & Recreation, volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. From restoring natural habitats and coaching youth sports to supporting community programs and live theatre, our volunteers help create experiences that make our community stronger. We asked three Parks & Recreation staff members to share what volunteers mean to our organization.

Jenna Leichner, Park Program Coordinator for Natural Resource & Stewardship, says volunteers are essential to caring for Corvallis’ parks and natural areas.

“You can’t have any functional natural resource program without volunteers,” Jenna says. “Our volunteers are what make our natural areas what they are: an accessible, closeto-home experience.” The voluntters effort restores rare Oregon white oak habitats, protect native species, maintain trails, and remove invasive plants, ensuring these beautiful spaces can be enjoyed for generations to come.

At The Majestic Theatre, Volunteer Specialist Milo Galasso sees volunteers creating magic both onstage and behind the scenes.

“It’s not a bit dramatic to say that volunteers are the lifeblood of our programming,” Milo shares. Whether welcoming patrons, performing, building sets, running lights and sound, or playing in the orchestra, volunteers make every production possible. “They create lasting impact in our community by telling their stories, forming connections, and fostering an environment where people can come together to have fun, find friends, and express themselves.”

Across Parks & Recreation, Volunteer Specialist Martha Miller works with volunteers who support countless programs and events.

“Our volunteers are vital to our programs,” Martha says. They facilitate support groups, assist with classes, coach youth sports, care for gardens and trails, and make events like the Turkey Trot, Oregon Senior Games, and Game Con possible. “Many of these classes and events would not be available without community involvement.”

Every volunteer contributes something unique, but together they create something extraordinary. Their generosity, passion, and commitment help Parks & Recreation fulfill its mission of building a healthy, connected, and vibrant community.

To every volunteer: thank you. You make Corvallis Parks & Recreation a better place, and we are grateful for all that you do.

Jenna Leichener, Martha Miller, and Milo Galasso

Urban Forestry

Corvallis, honored with its 17th Growth Award, is a Sterling Tree City for its urban forestry management and Arbor Day celebrations. The city also boasts a strong Heritage Tree Program recognizing trees of exceptional size, age, or historical value.

Corvallis has over 15,000 street trees alone. These street trees, which grow along streets, in parks, and City-owned right of ways, are managed by Corvallis Parks and Recreation Urban Forestry. The collective sum of their ecosystem service benefits exceeds $1,000,000!

DID YOU KNOW?

has been named as a Tree City USA for the 25th consecutive year!

Want a Street Tree? Call Urban Forestry at 541-766-6918 to see if you are eligible to have a tree planted in your right of way.

What do trees do for you? The leaves of trees, which total about 1.9 million square feet, help sequester carbon, save water and energy, capture air pollutants, and increase property values.

Corvallis Receives 2025 Tree City USA Recognition

Corvallis was awarded Tree City USA status for 2025, marking the 25th year as a Tree City USA and the 17th year receiving the Tree City USA Growth Award. Urban Forestry finished the planting season, having planted 170 trees across the City, including hosting an Arbor Day planting event at the Sunset Small Tree Arboretum next to the Hucksacker Bike Path along Country Club Dr.

In addition to planting, our Tree Crew has stayed busy pruning existing trees, (600 trees since the start of 2026!). We are making sure both that our larger trees are clear from street and sidewalk and our younger trees are properly trained.

Habitat Restoration Continues at MLK Jr. Park

Invasive removal and revegetation of riparian areas continued at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park this spring. Six different species of native trees and shrubs were planted in areas previously targeted for invasive and non-native fruit tree removal. New tree species planted included Oregon White Oak, Pacific Willow, and Cascara. This planting was done through partnership with Marys River Watershed Council and the Community Service Consortium.

Construction Begins on Parks Maintenance Facility

Construction has begun on the new Parks Maintenance Facility in Avery Park. This project has been four years in the making and represents a significant investment in the future of Parks & Recreation operations, providing improved facilities and efficiencies for our maintenance team.

Car and pedestrian detours will occur within Avery Park during construction through Fall 2027. Most impacts will occur Monday through Thursday with minimal impacts on Fridays and the weekend.

Spring & Summer Lookback! Pride in the Park

Corvallis Parks & Recreation kicked off the summer season with Pride in the Park this June at Avery Park, welcoming approximately 600 community members for an afternoon of fun, connection, and celebration.

Families enjoyed bounce houses, story time, live music, and entertainment throughout the park. A highlight of the event was the community sidewalk painting project, where Avery Park’s sidewalks were transformed into a colorful display of rainbow artwork, serving as a visible message of support, inclusion, and belonging for our LGBTQIA+ community and everyone who calls Corvallis home.

The overwhelming participation and positive energy made Pride in the Park one of the season’s standout events. Thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered, and helped make Pride in the Park such a tremendous success. We can’t wait to celebrate with you again next year!

Walk with Ease: Small Steps, Lasting Benefits

Sometimes the first step is simply showing up.

Walk with Ease is more than a walking class, it’s an opportunity to improve your health, build confidence, and connect with others in a welcoming, supportive environment, designed by the Arthritis Foundation.

For participant Teresa Stout, the class, taught by Becca Meskimen Clinton, offered far more than expected.

“I learned things about walking that I never knew,” she says. From proper stretching to improving posture by looking ahead instead of down, Teresa gained skills that helped her confidently walk across Canada at age 74.

“The biggest gain was meeting two women that I continue to have a supportive relationship with.”

Belinda Ann Barnes noticed physical improvements within weeks. “I learned walking and stretching techniques while exercising safely,” she says. “After participating for a few weeks, I noticed a lot less joint stiffness and less fatigue.” The class also helped her stay motivated while preparing for a trip to Iceland.

For Kristin Kanape, Walk with Ease came at exactly the right moment. After recovering from a difficult year, she found renewed confidence through the class. “It turned out to be transformative,” she says. “Becca let us start where we were and safely ease into regular exercise. I made lasting friends.”

Whether you’re looking to improve mobility, increase stamina, or simply enjoy walking with others, Walk with Ease can help you take that next step. To learn more and to register for “Walk with Ease”, go to page 21.

Preserving the Future of Osborn Indoor Natatorium

The Corvallis School District Board of Directors approved a $5.2 million construction bid to begin structural repairs at Osborn Aquatic Center. The project will repair the roof, replace the HVAC system, and replace the 50-meter pool liner. Construction is tentatively planned to start September 2026, with completion estimated by late fall 2027.

Budget and Funding Status

The total project cost is $6.4 million, which includes the $5.2 million construction bid, permitting fees, and other construction management expenses. The project budget is being refined through ongoing value engineering efforts currently under review. As of July 2026, the project has an estimated $1.5 million funding gap.

The District and City are collaborating to figure out solutions to the funding gap by applying for grants and running a capital fundraising campaign to secure the remaining funds.

Next Steps & Contingency Plan

If the remaining $1.5 million funding gap is not secured by May 2027, the District will temporarily reduce the project scope by removing the pool liner and HVAC units from the current construction contract. These components will be rebid once funding is secured.

Osborn Aquatic Center: A Look Back

For generations, Osborn Natatorium has been a place where our community has learned to swim, achieved personal goals, built friendships, and created lasting memories. As we reflect on the many moments shared within these walls, we celebrate the people, programs, and experiences that have made Osborn such a special part of our community. Those memories extend beyond the swimmers to the staff who helped shape the experience. Kane Ferguson a former Corvallis Parks & Recreation lifeguard, shared:

“I worked for a year at OAC as both a lifeguard and head guard, and I can say without a doubt that it was one of the most fun jobs that I have ever had. Having experienced working at many other pools before, OAC is one of the few that genuinely makes you feel as though you are having just as much fun guarding as the patrons who are enjoying the facilities. With the sheer amount of programming and offerings that OAC has, I can guarantee that there is something for everyone.”

That spirit of fun, connection, and community has defined Osborn for decades. Whether learning to swim, working a first job, reaching a personal milestone, or simply spending time with family and friends, generations of community members have found a place to belong. As Osborn begins its next chapter, we look back with gratitude for the memories made and the people who have made them possible.

“Having experienced working at many other pools before, OAC is one of the few that genuinely makes you feel as though you are having just as much fun guarding as the patrons who are enjoying the facilities.”
— Kane Ferguson, Former Parks & Recreation Lifeguard

Looking Forward

The reopening of Osborn Natatorium will mark the beginning of a new chapter for our community. We look forward to seeing familiar faces return, welcoming new swimmers, and once again filling the pool with learning, laughter, and opportunities to swim, play, and connect for years to come. Thank you for your patience as we complete this important investment in our community.

Due to limited operations at Osborn Aquatic Center, American Red Cross Courses, including Babysitter’s Training, will be held at various locations. Please check our website for course schedules and details.
