AS focuses on volunteer work, cafeteria food and ‘Obamacare.’ jonathan ramos Staff Writer At the midpoint of the semester, one student has been at work making sure her presidential campaign promises do not go unfulfilled.

Ty Moura, president of the Associated Students at Santa Monica College, has been busy working on projects that were only in their baby stages at the start of the semester.

The lowering of food prices in the cafeteria is an ongoing project, and one that Moura helms.

“In the cafeteria, we were able to get a five percent discount with the Campus Kitchen,” Moura said.

The discount applies to students who have paid the AS membership fees and show a valid SMC identification card.

She also explained the “bring your own mug” deal at TCBY and Campus Kitchen, where students can receive at least a $0.30 discount for bringing in their own mugs.

In order to accommodate those who do not eat meat, Moura said Eat Street is set to integrate a vegan and vegetarian bar into their current menu, planned for the spring.

“Talking with the owners of these businesses made me realize that [the food] is very sustainable already, which most students don’t know,” she said.

“The AS is going to partner with [the businesses] and try to show the students how they’re doing the procedures in a sustainable way and how they’re ordering organic food and things of the sort.”

Moura organized the opening of the documentary film “Inequality for All”

by Robert Reich at Landmark Theatres on Pico Boulevard on Sept. 27.

“We purchased 50 tickets for a special

screening, and then in the end [Reich] came in person and talked to the students and answered questions, so it was really cool,” she said.

The motive for the screening was to help students gain a better understanding of economic inequality, Moura said.

“There is a balance,” Moura said.

“Things are all interconnected, and if you watch the film, you can really understand how things are all really connected with each other.”

After receiving many complaints from students about the cost it takes to replace a student ID card, Moura was able to work out a “no expedite” option with the administration. The option would give students a choice of either requesting a new ID and waiting a few weeks to receive it free of charge, or paying the normal replacement fee of $29 to receive it immediately.

Some projects, like the discount network, a project in which Moura gathered local businesses and arranged discounts with each one for student members of the AS, have been put on hold. Others, such as the Civic Engagement Program, have already been initiated.

Still in its early stages, the CEP, spearheaded by Alex Vandertol, AS vice-president, would allow students to team up with the AS in finding local volunteer opportunities in order to receive community service credit.

“We have partnered with several different community organizations that will help us provide students with volunteer opportunities,” Moura said.

With so many ongoing projects, convincing students to sign up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act has been a consistent goal on the AS agenda.

Michael Greenberg, AS director of

publicity, has taken it upon himself to inform students about the enrollment process.

Greenberg said that after the University of Southern California received a grant from the federal government to provide information on the ACA, they approached the AS about informing SMC students.

The grant of $500,000 was given to USC for the funding of tables, booths and workshops, to explain how to sign up for health insurance, according to the California Health Benefit Exchange’s website.

“Currently, we have people from the campus who are doing outreach education, but are not trained enough to be an enrollment counselor,” said Greenberg, explaining that outreach educators do not actually enroll students, but inform them of how to do so.

He said enrollment counselors deal with personal information, such as social security numbers, that outreach educators are not qualified to receive.

Current outreach educators who have held workshops and set up tables in the quad will eventually be fully trained as enrollment counselors, Greenberg said.

Moura said her inaugural semester as AS president has been more about brainstorming, and that next semester will be more productive with the stepping stones already in place to take action.

“I’m actually very excited because I’ve learned that as student leaders, our biggest power is within education and speech,” Moura said. “So if we provide students with inspiring events, inspiring guest speakers, and things that will motivate them to be better people, that’s the best way we can contribute to their success.”

The amount of fraudulent identification presented by individuals attempting to take the entrance exam at Santa Monica College for prospective students has increased over the past three years, according to Esau Tovar, faculty leader of the assessment center.

“It used to happen sporadically,” says Tovar. “In the last year, we have probably had about ten cases, and we’ve reported about three recently.”

Tovar estimates about 70 percent of cases are international students hiring people who happen to be friends or acquaintances.

This week, two incidents of impersonation have occurred at the assessment center.

At 9:45 a.m. last Monday, a student was apprehended when attempting to use fraudulent identification to take an assessment test for another student. He and the student in question were referred to the judicial affairs office. No criminal charges have yet been filed.

Only an hour later, yet another individual attempting to take the assessment test presented a forged California identification card to staff in the center. The staff called campus police, and the individual’s identity was discovered after questioning. A citation was issued, and the report was forwarded to the city attorney’s office for prosecution.

Tuesday, Nov. 5 A black iPad mini tablet was stolen around 1:20 p.m. after a student fell asleep in the library on top of her iPad, and, upon waking up, found it missing.

No suspects were reported seen, and no witnesses have come forward with further information.

Just before 7:20 p.m., a nonstudent, known by police to be mentally ill, refused to leave campus after being asked by campus police to do so when he made disruptive statements in the library. The man complied without incident.

Wednesday, Nov. 6 A male student was cited for actively drinking whiskey on campus just before 3:30 p.m. and disposing of the bottle in a nearby trash can as observed by police officers. Both the citation and report were forwarded to the city attorney’s office for prosecution.

Thursday, Nov. 7 At noon, an Access transportation card was stolen in the library’s basement level after being left unattended for about 15 minutes. No suspects were reported seen, and no one has come forward with further information.

The beauty of success

Do you need to be aesthetically pleasing to be occupationally successful? jasmin huynh A+E Editor

W

hen we meet new people, the first thing we see is their physical appearance, which inevitably influences our first impression of them. That works in favor for some, but to the disadvantage of others, especially when it comes to jobs and careers.

Although looks are the first thing we notice, they do not have to be the last thing we remember.

For certain jobs, it makes sense that attractiveness plays a key role. Being goodlooking helps land jobs in occupational fields, such as retail and advertising, where employees serve as representatives of the company’s image.

It is understandable to pick good-looking people for advertisements, or to employ attractive retail associates to represent the company’s brand and market the product.

Abercrombie & Fitch is the perfect example. In 2006, Mike Jeffries, the company’s chief executive officer, publicly stated that his company hires good-looking people to attract good-looking customers.

Even the clothing line is designed exclusively for “cool kids,” as Jeffries describes people below size 12.

Jeffries’ business concept is questionable, and his statement probably didn’t make him many friends, but it is his right to choose his company’s image and to market it however he wants. If you don’t like it, then don’t shop there.

But even for other jobs that do not require good looks, a phenomenon called the haloeffect works in favor of beautiful people.

This bias, originally coined by psychologist Edward Thorndike, refers to the tendency to associate attractiveness with good characteristics.

The halo effect gives some applicants an unmerited head start in job interviews

and can cause qualified yet less attractive people to be turned down for jobs where physical attractiveness is unnecessary.

This bias, also known as “lookism,” even impacts politics. A study conducted in 2006 by the Institute for the Study of Labor in Germany found a correlation between visually appealing politicians and higher vote shares. The study suggests that good-looking politicians are elected because voters associate the candidates’ attractiveness with health, trustworthiness and competence.

In addition to that, people with facial stigmas or deformities have it even harder.

They are more likely to receive poor feedback in job interviews because their blemishes can distract interviewers who are then likely to retain less information about the applicant, resulting in more negative evaluations, according to a study conducted by researchers in 2011 at Rice University and the University of Houston.

However, for those out there who think beauty is always an advantage, some studies say otherwise. A study conducted in 2011 by the University of Denver Business School and published by the Journal of Social Psychology claims that good looks are not always helpful, but can actually bite you in the backside when it comes to certain jobs.

The study states that women rated as “very attractive” face discrimination when applying for “masculine” jobs.

Those include positions such as manager of research and development, director of finance, mechanical engineer, or construction supervisor. Good-looking men, however, are spared from this disadvantage.

So the conclusion is that a good-looking man will most likely have an easier path on the ladder of success, but a woman is damned if she either looks good or not.

When looks become an implicit way to favor or discriminate against some, it is

clearly unfair. But there is not much anyone can do about it. You can decide to conform to “lookism” and play by its rules, or tell yourself that you don’t want to work for a company that values physical appearance over competence.

But if you do want to be employed by such a company, one argument that could make you more empathetic toward this issue is that first impressions based on — or at least influenced by — physical appearance are universal. We all do it because looks are the first thing we see before anything else.

Even if that does not help, then your

last crumb of comfort might be that you still have a chance in the race against the beautiful people.

Physical appearance affects the first impression, but other factors like intelligence, charisma and personality contribute to the whole equation, and are crucial to the overall evaluation of a person.

So if you know that you don’t have the looks, either apply for the “masculine” jobs, or focus on your strengths so they outshine your physical appearance and become the qualities others will remember.

oday ’s society consists of countless negative depictions of women that are perpetuated by the media.

Reality shows such as “Bad Girls Club” promote cat fights and weave snatching between females, and music videos like “Pour it Up” by Rihanna tell women that it is OK to be half naked and spread your legs in order to make that bread.

With the media being the message and the messenger, we are bombarded on a daily basis with provocative and airbrushed images of women in advertisements, television shows, music videos, and video games.

We need more positive role models in the media today.

We need women who encourage, empower and help each other rise above this discrimination that we experience in our society.

The pressure put on women through the media shows that we, as a culture, have a long way to go before gender equality is accomplished.

Chandler Le Francis, president of the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance at Santa Monica College, is very concerned with the lack of female role models in the media.

“All kinds of women are just completely misrepresented, or not represented at all — even worse when we are talking about race, class and sexual orientation,” she says. “There are ways of progress, and it just reverts back to this terrible sexist portrayal of women.”

This generation is the worst in history because we are the generation without any privacy, and we lack boundaries.

Growing up as a young woman is not easy in today’s society, especially when women like Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj upload provocative images on social media sites, unaware of the damage they inflict to the perception of the modern woman.

What celebrities need to understand is that they are role models with sizable fan bases. Their unscrupulous actions send the wrong message to the younger generations — that you should flaunt and use your body to acquire what you want.

These days, you do not need talent or intelligence to be considered successful.

society before successfully changing the behavior of women.

“When we are looking at media, we should not examine a woman for who they are, or what they do individually,” she says. “We need to examine the system who forces women to do this.”

However, the change must take place within women first.

We must take a stand and say no — no to taking off our clothes to get what we want, no to allowing men to rule us through sex and money, and no to fighting and tearing each other apart.

The documentary “Miss Representation” addresses important aspects of how our society and how the media manipulates and slanders women.

Jean Kilbourne, a feminist speaker and author, was featured in the documentary.

“Girls get the message from very early on that what is most important is how they look — that their value, their worth depends on that,” she says in the film. “Boys get the message that this is what is important about girls.”

Women play an important and pivotal role in society that should never be overlooked by our looks. Women need to lead the way and set an example by being our own positive influences and role models.

If you want to see true change in gender relations, then do not watch “Bad Girls Club” or listen to Rihanna.

Actions speak louder than words, and women need to act differently if they want to be viewed differently.

With the media being so powerful and influential, women need to take advantage of it by making a change and empowering each other. /thecorsairnews •

Max Blumenthal on fear, loathing in modern Israel

Journalist and bestselling author Max Blumenthal discussed his latest published work "Goliath: Life and Loathing in Greater Israel" in Culver City.

srael is turning into a dystopian society where ethnicity, not citizenship, determines your rank and value, where dissenters are spied on, and a fascistic right wing is gaining power, according to bestselling author and journalist Max Blumenthal.

Blumenthal discussed his new, controversial book “Goliath: Life and Loathing in Greater Israel” at the Culver-Palms United Methodist Church in Culver City last Monday night. The event was hosted by the Los Angeles chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace.

Before covering Israel and its occupation of the Palestinian West Bank, Blumenthal gained prominence for his reporting on American politics. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Nation and the Los Angeles Times, among other publications.

Blumenthal’s video clips — in which he interviews Republican politicians and right wing groups and corners them with hard-hitting questions — became a hit on YouTube. His 2009 book “Republican Gomorrah: Inside the Movement That Shattered the Party” became a national bestseller.

Before a well-attended hall, Blumenthal sat down with University of California, Los Angeles professor Gabi Piterberg, a veteran of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, to discuss his book and the Israeli society’s radical turn to the extreme right since the 2009 elections.

Blumenthal traveled to and lived in both Israel and the occupied West Bank for four years, meeting Israelis and Palestinians, which resulted in his new book.

During the talk, Blumenthal discussed how the traditional right wing, represented by Benjamin Netanyahu, is slowly being replaced by even more extreme politicians and parties who promote a colonial agenda regarding the occupied West Bank, Gaza and their Palestinian inhabitants, while advocating ethnocentric policies inside Israel itself.

Both Blumenthal and Piterberg discussed how the lessons of the Holocaust have been “twisted around by Israeli politicians.”

According to them, instead of taking the horrific event as a lesson for the need of fighting discrimination and oppression, the Israeli system uses it to keep its population under a siege mentality.

Blumenthal described how the very nature of Israel’s stated goal to be a specifically “Jewish state” has resulted in policies designed to keep a specific, ethnic hegemony in place.

He described recent policies aimed at African refugees, including laws allowing Africans arrested while crossing into Israel to be detained for up to three years without trial.

When discussing the topic of the militant group Hamas ruling the blockaded Gaza Strip, Blumenthal compared the policy of blockading Gaza to the continuing U.S. blockade of Cuba, calling it a useless policy that has only helped keep the current regime in power.

Blumenthal stressed that the best form of resistance is nonviolence, and explained his support of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, which promotes boycotting measures against Israel, similar to those applied to apartheid South Africa in the 1980s. “‘The sword enters the world when justice is delayed and justice is denied;’ we said that in the haggadah prayer this year for Passover,” Blumenthal said, warning that Palestinian terrorism is a direct result of despair and occupation.

Afterward, Blumenthal sat down for a private discussion of his book and its themes.

“The average college student is probably not the average college student if they’re approaching my book because the average college student is not interested or captivated by this issue,” he said. “But the ones I meet at my talks are some of the most intellectually curious people I meet.”

For those still questioning, Blumenthal recommended that students spend time in the Middle East, inside the West Bank, and inside the Israeli society, and draw their own conclusions.

“Once you see the separation wall, just seeing it is unlike anything, unless you’ve had experience at the U.S.-Mexico border,” Blumenthal said. “But once you learn that the separation wall isn’t even a border, and that it’s put there to limit Palestinian presence inside Israel, you start asking a lot of other questions.”

The separation barrier Blumenthal described is a massive separation wall Israel has constructed to divide its population from the Palestinian West Bank, which it still occupies with security forces.

“The United States is encouraging it, funding it with American taxpayer money and the full-throated support of our first African-American president Barack Obama,” he said. “That’s a lesson we can draw — that we can’t count on our leaders and our elites to bring change to Israel-Palestine.”

On the issue of Iran, Blumenthal could not say for certain if Netanyahu would actually bomb the Islamic Republic, as many have feared for years.

“Netanyahu is slightly more rational than that, but those who come after Netanyahu might not be,” he said.

Photos & text by Crislin Christian Located at the end of a long hallway in the Business Building, the Santa Monica College cosmetology department has been heard of by many, but seen only by few.

Clad in all-black or all-white scrubs and toting professional makeup kits, cosmetology students have been seen around campus, reminding the SMC community of the department’s existence.

A cozy, close-knit environment can be found on the other side of the black, double doors.

The department is a maze of salon-styled classrooms, complete with hairstyling booths that double as desks, and a room with sinks for shampooing.

“The students really learn here,” said John Rogers, the department chair. “They have everything they need to learn how to work in a real salon.”

Mannequin heads with hair in braids, rollers and foil were lined up on desks. Student

hairstylists snipped at dead ends and styled their clients’ hair, while manicurists clipped clients’ nails.

In a dimly lit room near the back of the salon, soothing music played as clients received steam treatments from facial specialists. Behind a thick curtain that divided the main salon, Jilla Assadi taught her advanced hair coloring class the proper application of an ombre dye job.

Rogers did not hesitate to share his hair styling techniques with a student, while Jacqueline Monge helped another student with her finger-waves.

Law had seven models, including Brian Fan, who showcased the hairstyling and makeup methods she had mastered while studying at the department.

“I have to bleach Brian’s hair first,” Law said, as she applied white coloring agent with a black brush. “After this, I’m going to dye it ruby red.”

Fan said he was not shaken having a student dye his hair.

“She makes me feel so comfortable,” he said.

“I felt like I could trust her the first time I met her, and the teachers are amazing.”

That appeared to be the general consensus of the cosmetology instructors, who seek to mix teaching and in-house training and allow students to practice their skills on actual salon clients by providing hands-on assistance when needed.

fter a 15-hour flight, you hope to breathe in fresh air, meet fascinating people, gain new friends, and have different experiences. Your English might be slightly off, but that does not scare you. You feel happy, and there is nothing that can stop you from being the adventurous international student.

Soon you find yourself standing in front of an apartment door, your heart racing. You push the door slightly and can see darkness sucking you in. You unwillingly take a step forward.

You look down and realize that you just destroyed a months-old cookie that oddly still sticks to your shoe. Was it mold? As soon as you are inside, the stuffy air catches you by surprise and forces you to throw your hands up to your face.

In the attempt to remain calm, panic takes over as soon as your head turns to the well of dishes dripping with gooey substances. You can hear the vicious sounds of the fly army protecting its castle.

Suddenly, a dark shadow shifts along the wall. You jump and run, and before you even know it, you have reached your safe haven — your room.

While this is not every international student’s experience, at least a few international students have had to deal with difficult or messy roommates, and wonder how to get out of the unfamiliar and unwelcoming place called home.

Finding your way around a new country can be difficult for international students, but the trick is knowing where to look.

A 21-year-old Santa Monica College student from Lithuania, Robertas Kuliunas has had a similar experience with roommates.

Kuliunas recalls having one roommate who had too many of his own dishes to handle, and use all the dishes he owned without washing them.

“He just used all the plates like they were one-time use only,” said Kuliunas. “We end up having piles of dishes.

Then our dishes started disappearing because he had nothing else to use.”

After a while of the recurring lack of cleanliness, Kuliunas and his roommates created a chore list, which helped to improve the overall well-being of the group.

SMC student Noelle B. Miller, a film major from Sweden, has had minor problems with her roommates due to differing schedules.

“Some people wake up early; some people want to go to sleep earlier or later,” said Miller. “I have some morning classes. I have to get up pretty early, so I get to bed earlier, and they want to be in the living room talking.”

She has become unhappy with her roommates only once, she said, after they brought some guests back home in the late evening.

“One night, they came home with a couple of guys, and they were making a lot of noises, so I got pretty pissed,” Miller said. “At night they were a little bit annoyed because I was embarrassing them, but then in the morning they apologized, and it was all fine.”

Both Kuliunas and Miller have had only minor roommate issues.

At the International Education Center at SMC, the staff had little to say on the matter of international student living in Santa Monica.

“We are a nonresidential campus and do not have housing on campus,” said Kelley Brayton, dean of international education at the college. “While we support

If you do not know anyone in the U.S., try looking for your local community as Sunho Hwang, a 24-year-old South Korean psychology major at SMC, has done. Hwang found a local Korean community website and sought new roommates there.

You can also try following Eduardo Melchior’s example. He is an 18-year-old French-Brazilian business major, and seeks roommates through the college’s Facebook page and website. As he has been admitted to the University of Southern California for the spring, he looked for roommates on the USC spring admit Facebook page.

Understand what being a roommate means, and that being a roommate gives you little or no legal protection in certain cases.

According to nolo.com, a website that IEC recommends visiting in case of any housing issues, “Unless the landlord has accepted the presence of the roommate a roommate has the legal status of a long-term guest, with few, if any, legal protections.”

This means that if you do not sign the lease or the rental agreement, you would be living in the apartment illegally, and if anything happened to you because of your roommates who are on the lease, you would not be able to seek help. Only by signing the lease or any other legally binding documents are you protected.

After you find a place, make sure that you talk to your possible future roommates openly, and talk about any pet peeves you might have.

Foot fractures common for osteoporosis sufferers

Students are warned that osteoporosis is often accompanied by symptoms normally associated with other bone-related diseases.

rom running and jumping in basketball to sliding in soccer or tackling in football, Santa Monica College athletic programs can make athletes susceptible to foot-related injuries.

Osteoporosis, a bone-thinning disease, is responsible for about 1.5 million bone fractures a year, and affects an estimated total of 28 million Americans, according to the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons’ website.

Many people do not realize they are even affected by osteoporosis because it is often accompanied by symptoms normally found with other bone-related diseases. It is not until the bone becomes so vulnerable and fragile that it breaks that people realize something is not right, according to FootHealthFacts.org.

The “silent crippler” is the term that is most associated with osteoporosis because of its often dormant nature that affects athletes and students alike. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that the greater percentage of people with this disease are men and women over

the age of 50, it can affect people of all ages and ethnicities, so it is recommended to stay physically active every day.

“While the bones of the spine, hip and wrist are the most common bones to become fractured as a result of osteoporosis, metatarsals and other bones in the feet can be affected,” states the Foot Health Facts website. “In fact, some people first find out they have osteoporosis because of a fracture in the foot.”

“The bone is living and constantly regenerating itself, and when it doesn’t do that, that’s when the bone weakens and can become osteoporotic,” says Elaine Roque, a kinesiology professor at SMC. For athletes on campus, the ankles and feet are easy targets for this crippling disease.

Football players, for example, should be wary of ankle fractures, contusions and bone bruises as a result of strong impact during tackling and general rigorous training, according to the website.

In addition, volleyball players, who are also putting strain on their feet, as a result of their repetitive jumping and side-to-side movement, should also be cautious with pain in their feet.

time events like a student rolling their ankle during a volleyball game, landing funny after a jump, or even getting caught in someone’s, or even their own, shoes,” Roque says.

In regards to osteoporosis, Roque says she usually sees it in older students.

“A lot of them actually take my fitness class because doctors had told them that doing weight bearing exercise was good for stimulating bone growth,” she says.

There are several ways that osteoporosis and fractures in the feet can be prevented.

One of the most prevalent reasons for the occurrence of osteoporosis is a lack of calcium in the diet.

“A person with high bone mass as a young adult will be more likely to have a higher bone mass later in life,” according to the CDC. “Inadequate calcium consumption and physical activity early on could result in a failure to achieve peak bone mass in adulthood.”

Experts recommend 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day, with notable sources including milk and dark green, leafy vegetables like broccoli.

“Strength training does this too with the tendons being pulled where they’re connected to the bone,” she says. “Also being on the track or on the stairs help to stimulate the bone growth.”

High school seniors transition to SMC freshmen Midway through their first semester of college, freshmen share their feelings about the transition from high school.

anta Monica College freshman Jacqueline Portillo has yet to rebound after missing only one day of her Spanish class.

“I came back, and I didn’t know what was going on,” says Portillo, a radio broadcast major at SMC. “Its a four-hour class, so I kind of lost a week of work, and it was really stressful trying to get back at it.”

The college experience can be challenging for students who are not prepared for the difference in schedules, classes and workload in comparison to high school.

Some students can walk into their freshman year of college and succeed just as easily as they did in high school.

Some find comfort in college, which helps them succeed at a greater level than in high school.

Others, whether they flourished in high school or not, enter their freshman year of college and fall flat due to unpreparedness for the next level.

So how are SMC freshmen feeling midway through their first semester?

“I’m feeling really disappointed,” says Portillo. “I’ve had to drop a few classes just because I’m not able to keep up with them.”

Political science major Valeria Lucas feels that the hectic workload combined with her after-school job stop her from fully enjoying the college life.

“I’m feeling a little tired trying to balance everything out,” she says.

College students are required to finish a certain amount of credits to fulfill the general education requirements as well as the prerequisites for their respective majors, which Lucas feels causes students to stress and become disorganized.

For some, the biggest difference between high school and

college has nothing to do with academics.

“People don’t talk,” says Lucas. “It’s very in your own little bubbles, so that’s been my biggest thing so far.”

From a social standpoint, Portillo says the difficulty is “not knowing anyone, and it staying that way.”

SMC psychology professor Alex Shwartz attributes some of the confusion and stress students carry to a failure to recognize their purpose for attending college.

Shwartz says that after receiving the heavy workload, students often ask themselves why they are in college in the first place.

“A lot of them don’t put the work in, and then do badly and then also wonder why,” says Shwartz.

He feels the majority of students he has encountered have not entirely thought out what their long-term goal is, and if students really want to enjoy their chosen career, then they should begin to experience it hands-on at an early stage of their lives.

Sometimes, the freedom with class selection and schedule in college can lead a student to make bad decisions when it comes to organization.

“They can actually pick their classes and work their schedule around it,” says Bernadette O’Leary, psychology professor at SMC. “But with that comes some need for responsibility and managing their time.”

After teaching and observing the behavior of students between three different colleges, O’Leary says that it can be especially difficult for community college freshmen to take their studying seriously.

“I get the impression that a lot of students here are not really managing their time well,” O’Leary says. “They’re not reading assignments, paying attention to things, or taking responsibility for what they need to do to get their A. They’re just kind of expecting the instructor to kind of give them a grade.”

There are a number of students who have enjoyed adjusting to a higher level of education. SMC freshman Tali Brown feels that the college has been a better

experience than high school.

“I think it’s a lot easier,” she says. “There are less classes, and you know your assignments ahead of time.”

While some students admit to college carrying a harder workload, they do say that it is nothing they cannot handle.

“When I graduated high school, my friends said that college was going to be really hard, but when you get here, it’s OK,” says student Sandra Vasquez. “The classes are a little bit harder, but I can still manage it.”

Jennifer Sandoval, a business major at SMC, feels that the professors and college courses are not as strict as some of her friends claimed.

“The teachers are pretty cool, and they do give you extra credit and help you a lot,” Sandoval says.

Sophomore David Huh was able to use his newfound independence during his freshman year as a turning point in what was then a poor academic career.

“I totally flipped it upside down here,” Huh says. “I think it was maybe being away from my parents and being able to do it myself. It helped.”

While not all students share the same sentiments for their first semester at college, they can agree that it is definitely a learning experience.

“I now know that I shouldn’t just get any classes to fill in the units, but I should really think wisely at the time,” Portillo says. “I guess I’m falling over, but I’ll pick myself up next semester.”

Allegations made against Miami Dolphins guard Richie Incognito spark debate over rookie hazing.

T

h e recent uproar between Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin of the Miami Dolphins has severely threatened the tradition of rookie hazing in any sports program.

The acts of heckling and playing pranks on rookies of a sports team have long since been an intricate part of any athletic program.

From professional athletes leaving rookies to pay $15,000 dinner bills to high school and college athletes forcing younger players to carry their equipment, hazing is sometimes viewed as just fun with no real harm.

But the allegations against Incognito, which include death threats and racial slurs, border the line between innocent fun and outright bullying.

While certain people enjoy a good ribbing, there are those who feel rookie hazing is an abomination to the integrity of a sport.

"There is really no place for hazing in sports," said Gifford Lindheim, head coach of Santa Monica College's football

team. "Any activity that is degrading or humiliating or makes one person feel less than another isn't productive for any party."

Lindheim said he does not allow hazing on his own team.

"We don't even talk about whether a guy is a freshman or a sophomore," he said, adding that his players are given equal opportunity and value no matter what the position or level.

Rookies might be newer to the scene, but they are not slaves. Having to carry other players' equipment or cleaning up after their messes is something that should be obliterated from sports altogether.

That kind of behavior portrays a lack of leadership and equality within a sports team. It seems that veterans do this less for having fun and more for feeding their own

damaged egos.

Rookies on a team generally have to adjust to a new team, new coaches, and new systems. From my time playing on sports teams, rookies have been subjected to ridicule when they are not able to pick up a system as fast as players who have been on the team for a longer time.

After a year or so, rookies are then considered veterans with a bone to pick.

They feel inclined to dish out the same treatment they were given as rookies, therefore, humiliating new rookies by making them parade around in their underwear or having them run a mile carrying another player's equipment.

Being a rookie does not necessarily mean that a player's skill level is weaker than that of a veteran. Rookies often take a team by storm as soon as they set foot on a

basketball court or a football field.

Just last year, quarterbacks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III quickly outshined the rest of their teammates, as well as other veteran quarterbacks throughout the National Football League, both leading their teams to the postseason.

This year, SMC's own freshman running back Melvin Davis has played an intricate part in the Corsairs' success.

A player whose skill set is leaps and bounds greater than that of his or her teammates should not have to be made to be any less on the team solely because veterans on the team cannot match the talent.

The Incognito-Martin case, however, brings a much more disturbing aspect of rookie hazing to the table.

When players feel the need to toughen up younger players using threats, racial slurs and verbal harassment, then they are taking the act of hazing and turning it into flat-out bullying.

In 2012, La Puente High School's men's soccer team underwent an investigation after four players were accused of sexually violating freshmen team members with poles, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Stupidity is taken to astronomical heights when athletes defend this excuse for bullying because they feel rookies have to tolerate such abuse in order to "earn their stripes."

Athletes prove their worth by showing what they can produce, and not by how much humiliation they can take from older teammates.

A simple joke can be tolerated, but these idiotic acts of raw abuse should ultimately lead to the extermination of rookie hazing altogether.

"I anticipate hazing will soon be a thing of the past and outlawed, as it should be," Lindheim said.

That would probably be for the best.

Bring on next season sports

The Santa Monica College women's cross country team hopes to lean on a more experienced team for next year Jonathan Ramos Staff Writer As the sun sets on the season for the Santa Monica College women's cross country team, runners and coaches are looking on to next season, and hoping to utilize a more experienced lineup.

"The women's season went well for what we had to work with," said Eric Barron, the team's head coach. "We had a lot of first-year runners who did not have a lot of experience running."

While runners Ashley Boutesaz and Sandra Ignacio were able to qualify for the Southern California regional championships, Barron said the rest of the team is still in its development stages.

After finishing 11th within the Western State Conference, Barron said he believes the caliber of his runners combined with the added experience will be an asset for them next season.

"The idea is that with more experienced runners, because long-distance running is a very cumulative activity, with more time they put in day in and day out, the benefits really pay off, so hopefully next year we will get to see those results," Barron said.

Marissa Tiamfook, assistant coach of the team, shared Barron's thoughts on what the team lacked and what can be improved.

"We have some really strong runners, but we just didn't have the depth that we need and that we've had in the past," she said.

"Last year, as a whole team, we qualified

for SoCal regionals, and this year we barely had enough runners to field a full squad of seven members."

She added that the training of each runner will determine the success of the team next season.

Sophomore standout Ashley Boutesaz said she did not believe that this season was a complete failure, despite the small team's limited success.

"It got better as the races went on," she said. "I got more confident and more fit, and it just got better each time I raced. The team is really fun, and we all get along so well, so that made practice fun."

With this season being Boutesaz' last season of eligibility, she said she hopes to keep running and transfer as a history major to the University of California, Los Angeles.

Freshman Sandra Ignacio, who, like Boutesaz, also qualified for regionals, felt that running at the college level has been a heavier load than it was in high school.

"I'm definitely working harder than in high school," she said. "Here, we do so many things that I've never done before."

Ignacio also said that the core workouts — and timing the longer distances she has had to run — has led to her picking up her training. Like Boutesaz, Ignacio felt that this season has been fun regardless of the outcome, especially making it to the regional championships.

"I was really surprised, and in high school, I would've never had that chance," said Ignacio.

SMC students showcase their own short films Santa Monica College film students screened their work, including award-winning short film “Solidarity” by Dustin Brown.

front of a full house of more than 200 people on Thursday, Film 33, a short film directing course at Santa Monica College, presented four short films and one trailer, each directed and produced by SMC students.

The event was hosted by Salvador Carrasco, who teaches the film course, which gives students the opportunity to experience every aspect of creating and developing a film project.

Guests included SMC media chair Frank Dawson, Superintendent and President Chui L. Tsang, the directors and producers of each film, and several actors involved with the films.

Perhaps the most notable film shown, and the only one to have already premiered, was the award-winning short film "Solidarity."

The film, directed by former SMC student Dustin Brown, won the award for best dramatic short at the San Diego Film Festival, and placed as a finalist for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts student film award among six finalists, including the American Film Institute, University of Southern California, University of California, Los Angeles, Chapman University, and California Institute of the Arts.

The film follows a Hispanic woman and a Lithuanian man, each struggling to deal with loss and turbulence in their lives.

"I think the important thing is that these undocumented people that live here and work here and have their families here, and everything is here, but they're treated like not a full human being," Brown said.

"Some of them work in almost slave labor conditions, and they're looked down upon, and they have every disadvantage you can think of because they happen to be from another country. I think it's an injustice."

Brown said his intention was not for the film to preach the cause, but to provide awareness of the mistreatment that follows immigrants.

The majority of the film is spoken in the characters' native languages, which Brown felt brought realism to the film.

"Nothing rings a film false in the sense of if it's in another country or somewhere, but they're speaking English," he said.

With the film's language, Brown was not only "trying to be true to life," but the foreign speech also helps understand part of each character's culture.

"Solidarity" was the first film of SMC's film production program to be screened outside the college.

"I'm very proud," Brown said. "It was kind of just a happy accident, and the success that it's gotten is great. Everybody involved is happy about it, and I'm thankful to Santa Monica College and the film program."

Brown even spoke about evolving "Solidarity" into a full-length film.

"I'm writing a full-length script right now, so that is the next thing on the horizon," he said.

In addition to "Solidarity," three other students' short films were showcased.

The first to make its debut was Ronja Jansz' "Annabel Lee," a film about a man named Mario and his much scrutinized attempt to cope with the death of his wife, Annabel.

Next up was "Rachel 9000," a sciencefiction allegory directed by Angelo Chavez.

The film revolved around a female robot named Rachel, originally made to serve and please her maker, who rebels in an attempt to find her own humanity.

The last student project screened was Morgan Peterson's "I'll Take Care of You," a film about a law student who is raped and finds herself face to face with her attacker after he is accused to have targeted other victims.

Added as a surprise for the audience was "Remnants," a short film produced by two current SMC students, Christopher Rojas, the director, and RJ Holloway, as well as former SMC student Jennifer Miguel, who were all selected by Sony Pictures to create this short for one of their film training programs.

During the screening, the audience was given a sneak peak of the film production program's current big project "Hurt," an emotionally charged film that revolves around a school shooting. Coincidentally, the crew finished filming only a week before the SMC shooting in June.

"It was very confusing for all of us," Carrasco said. "We had been living that scenario, imagining, trying to understand things, and then it happens here at our second home. It was quite an experience."

"Hurt" is currently in post-production, but the trailer alone has already left an impact on those who were in attendance.

"I can already see this is going to be a really powerful film because of the tragic incidents that happened here," Dawson said. "It’s really going to resonate, and I think it’s going to be a truly important film."

The film course has only produced five films thus far, but has already been recognized for its work and potential, Carrasco said.

"Since I started at SMC, we've had students transfer to USC, NYU and UCLA, which are considered the top film schools in the country, and we also have students who are already making a living as filmmakers," he said. "That is precisely the philosophy behind it — to give our students the option to transfer to the best film schools in the country and to prepare them for the job market."

Although Carrasco leads the charge, he attributed the success of the film production program to his students.

"In my hiring interview, I was asked to think outside the box, and this is the result," Carrasco said. "But I'm not doing the thinking. It's my students."

Global Motion tours the world onstage

The Santa Monica College dance company celebrated different cultures with a series of world dance performances last weekend.

ahitian dancers moving in ecstasy and Aztecs summoning a serpent god appeared on Friday night at Santa Monica College’s Broad Stage.

With their show “Dance in American Culture,” SMC’s world dance company Global Motion presented an epic celebration of diverse forms of dance from east to west, and formal to tribal. For audience members, it was a global tour and an artistic experiment.

There was no grouping of the dances; one culture flowed into another. It was as if, for this brief evening, national borders became extinct and language barriers were replaced by the movement of bodies.

The show began with a “Dance of Invocation,” also called “The Blossoming,” choreographed by guest choreographer Viji Prakash. This was a dance from the millenniums-old southern areas of India. In traditional Indian garb, the dancers began what would prove to be an astounding, memorable program.

The Middle East was celebrated with a fusion of tribal and belly dances, choreographed by faculty member Jennifer Jesswein, to the sensuous and dark rhythm of Beats Antique’s “Egyptic.”

Mestizo Mexican culture was represented by two dances, “Las Alazanas,” a traditional folkloric Mexican dance with girls in Mexican cowgirl costumes dancing with men in charro suits, and “Jarabe

Nayarit,” which featured girls in colorful dresses accompanied by male dancers who stunned the audience with a performance in which they clanked machetes in perfect, but dangerous, synchronization.

Music from the United States took shape with the energetic, fun numbers “Decisions, Decisions,” choreographed by students Martika Yuille and Timothy Nunez, and “Who I See,” choreographed by student Jerry Morales.

The show slowed down for “Dream a Little Dream,” set to the song of the same title Arlene Karno Corsair by the Mamas and the Papas.
