Anti-gay group protests at local high school

Elizabeth moss & alex vejar News Editor & A+E Editor Members of the Santa Monica and surrounding communities assembled in front of Santa Monica High School Monday morning in opposition to protests by members of Westboro Baptist Church, known for their anti-gay sentiments.

People in opposition of WBC created a “positive wall of humanity,” according to Ruhi Bhalla, co-president of Samohi’s Gender and Sexuality Alliance, that stretched half a block in front of the high school and down Seventh Street. Over 200 people attended.

Bhalla and fellow GSA club president, Molly Chaikin, researched 10 peaceful ways to protest WBC, and decided on the wall, which is a human chain facing the school to block views of protesters.

“We hope to make this a positive experience,” Chaikin said.

With a week and a half of planning, Chaikin, 17, and Bhalla, 16, made a Facebook group and encouraged people to suggest anti-protest ideas.

“It’s not about us; it’s about our student body,” Chaikin said.

At least six members from WBC were present, including a teenage girl.

Among the WBC group was Rachel Hockenbarger, who expressed little worry about their lack of support.

“This isn’t a competition as to how many people believe or how many people don’t believe,” she said. “The children go from the high schools to the killing fields in Iraq and Afghanistan. No group of people needs this word more than this group of people in these days.”

Hockenbarger said Samohi is not the first high school WBC has visited. The Topeka,

Kansas-based congregation also protested the Oscars this past weekend.

To reach appropriate age groups, WBC parodies popular songs by adding their own lyrics. One of the songs chosen on Monday was Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now,” to which the protesters replaced the hook with “you need us now.”

“We have to speak to a generation, and we use their songs to speak to them,” Hockenbarger said.

By 7:48 a.m., WBC had left.

Among the community effort toward WBC were teachers, parents, religious officials, and members from Santa Monica to North Hollywood. GSAs from Brentwood, Palos Verdes, Santa Monica College, and Loyola Marymount were also represented.

“Santa Monica has a pretty rich history of excepting and really fostering diversity,” said Sandra Lyon, superintendent for Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.

“Clearly, that’s not something they support.”

Nathanial Acker, an advanced placement government teacher at Samohi, pulled students out of his 7:10 a.m. class to experience the protest.

“They need to be able to see all aspects of society,” he said. “The good, the bad and the ugly. The constitutionality issue of when the First Amendment begins and ends.”

Posters hung and held around Samohi stated things like “God cares for all people” and “Unity is my value – Samohi unites” in opposition to WBC pickets, one of which read, “God hates fags.”

“Our GSA here at Santa Monica High School really saw this as a great rallying cry to support all of our students,” Lyon said.

“Our students really took great leadership in this event.”

The high school held events inspired by the protest for the rest of the day.

New degree program to ease transfer rachael garcia Staff Writer California State University and California Community College chancellors headed a conference call that outlined the new associate degree for transfer program, which aims to reduce unit overlap, among other issues.

Senate Bill 1440, the legislation responsible for the associate degree for transfer program, is a "historic reform and improvement in the way students transfer between California Community Colleges and California State Universities," said Erik Skinner, CCC deputy chancellor, during the conference call.

Passed on Sept. 29, 2010 by Sen. Alex Padilla, the bill's aim is to provide a clear path of transfer to CSUs from CCCs, guaranteeing CSU admission and diminishing the issue of wasted or repeated credits.

Under SB 1440, students will be working toward an Associate in Arts degree for transfer or an Associate in Science degree for transfer at CCCs to receive their bachelor's degree from a CSU. The transfer degrees will "guarantee admission somewhere in the system," said Skinner. Sixty lower

division units at CCCs link directly with CSU units, where students will then take an additional 60 units to graduate with a bachelor's degree.

Before SB 1440, requirements forced students to overprepare, mandating that they take extra lower division courses that would not transfer to the CSU of their choice, or were unnecessary for their major. Transfer students in the past had to repeat these courses at CSUs. This reduction of extra units will create class space at CCCs for up to 40,000 students, and 14,000 at the CSU level, said Skinner.

"Following the 1440 path [will reduce] wasted time on courses not going toward a degree, saving time and money on both the student and administrative level," said Ephraim P. Smith, CSU executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer.

Students who complete the AA-T or AS-T degree also receive priority in the CSU admission process.

Students, who are applying to an impacted CSU or impacted major with an AA-T or AS-T, receive a 0.1 GPA boost. For CSUs that are not impacted, a 0.2 GPA bump is given.

If an SMC student on the 1440 path applies to a CSU with identical grades as a non-transfer student, the SMC student will be admitted because of the extra GPA bump

that the AA-T or AS-T degree gave them.

So far, 22 of the most popular majors are already set in place, with six additional programs in development. There are a total of 557 degrees offered throughout the 112 CCCs, and by fall of this year, 80 percent of these majors are set to have a transfer degree. By fall of 2014, 100 percent of the majors are to be covered. Smith states that this goal is a top priority.

Skinner said that the state holds value in the multiple missions CCCs provide, like job training and ESL courses, but that their current aim is "strengthening one of the legs of the tripod."

However, California's higher education system has suffered from recent budget cuts.

"The governor's new budget will hopefully stop the hemorrhaging," said Smith, referring to the $1.4 billion in additional general fund support for higher education.

If the schools can get the state funding back, they will fully support these new pathways with sufficient courses so that there are no wait lists, said Smith.

A companion bill has been established that identifies similar initiatives for the University of California system.

SMC public information officer retires molly philbin Opinion Editor After 24-and-a-half years of being the public information officer at Santa Monica College, Bruce Smith is all smiles.

Since retiring from SMC, Smith has been going to the gym, taking French classes, planning a trip to France, and focusing on his theater projects. He also recently started a new public relations business, Smith Writing & PR. Smith has dealt with public relations at SMC since 1988, writing weekly newsletters, issuing press credentials and clarifying the news of the college for the media.

Smith has always been fond of news media and relations. After graduating from the University of California, Santa Barbara, he wrote for newspapers such as the Los Angeles Times and the Los Angeles Daily News for the next decade.

“I loved being a reporter, but it’s really high stress,” Smith said. “After a while, I just felt that I needed to do something different, but I wanted to do something related, so I went into public relations.”

Smith had looked into SMC before and had loved the location and its academic reputation.

“I answered an ad in the [Los Angeles] Times,” Smith said. “As I got here and

learned more about [the college], I realized it was such a special place.”

In his time at the college, he has had to work his PR magic in some difficult situations, such as the pepper spray incident last spring.

The 1994 earthquake was another PR milestone for Smith. SMC was severely damaged, but the focus was entirely at the epicenter in the Valley. Santa Monica was being ignored, Smith said.

“That was a very old-fashioned PR crisis in the sense that I would literally create little handwritten one-page flyers giving updates on earthquake recovery,” Smith said. “I’d literally walk around campus and hand them out. I felt like a newsie.”

Once the media realized how bad the damage was in Santa Monica, the college was able to start getting Federal Emergency Management Agency money.

Other monumental moments in Smith’s career were the opening of new structures, when former President Bill Clinton spoke at SMC a month after his inauguration, and when then-mayor Arnold Schwarzenegger was the 2005 graduation speaker.

While at SMC, Smith has worked closely with the theater department, where he has written plays for production such as “Heart Mountain” and “Butterfly Wings.” Smith will continue to pursue this passion.

“I am of the opinion that whoever handles media relations at SMC should ideally have a journalism background because that person understands deadlines, understands what the media needs and understands the institution,” said Smith.

Theft, battery, more property damage Vanessa Barajas Staff Writer

The second week of the spring semester was packed full of punches, hit-and-runs, and theft opportunities.

Last Tuesday, at around 2 p.m., a dispute among two individuals occurred in parking structure three, resulting in battery charges.

A male and female were approached by a man who exchanged words, as well as a few pushes and shoves, with the male.

According to Sgt. Jere Romano of the Santa Monica College Police Department, parking enforcement officers separated the men until police officers arrived at the scene and issued the offending man a citation.

A hit-and-run occurred last Tuesday at about 11 a.m. at the Performing Arts Campus parking lot, located on 11th Street and Santa Monica Boulevard. The victim’s car had minor rear damage. The suspect was described as a female in her late 50s to early 60s. Information was cited, but the suspect was not apprehended.

Also last Tuesday morning, a digital camera was reported stolen after a female student left the device in the temporary possession of a recently acquainted student, who disappeared upon receiving said device.

The theft occurred between the Admissions Building and the Theatre Arts Building. The student is still being sought after.

Meeting seeks to close AS-student gap Vanessa Barajas Staff Writer Members of the Associated Students held a town-hall-style meeting from 11:15 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. on the Santa Monica College quad. The goal was to close the gap between the students and their government, according to Yacob Zuriaw, AS director of student advocacy, who headed the meeting.

“Here’s the place where you can be heard,” Zuriaw said during the meeting.

Planning for the public meeting began two weeks ago, said Samantha Ross, AS secretary.

“There’s no dialogue among students,” Zuriaw said. “Students can’t really talk about the school, and that’s what the whole purpose of this town meeting is.”

The town hall student participants voiced their concerns during the meeting, and suggested solutions to each others’ problems of being denied services.

“This is a precursor to see if we can recruit students for the March in March,” said Ross, referring to the student protest taking place in Sacramento, Calif. on March 4, where students fight to protect public higher education, according to last year’s March in March website.

Stephen Prociw, a student at SMC, publicly spoke at the meeting and brought up his issue regarding the math tutoring lab resources being denied to him while participating in the UCLA extension program, advertised by SMC’s school website. Prociw is the president of the college’s law club and second-year political science major, according to his SMC pre-

law society online profile.

Prociw’s concerns of being denied tutoring center services at the college raised energy from the crowd of students gathered.

SMC student Clinton Clad-Johnson found the organization of Tuesday’s meeting “inadequate.” He has been actively participating in student protests since last spring.

“I saw a lot of places there could have been fliers, but there weren’t,” he said.

AS President Parker Jean began the meeting with a short introduction, which included a session of him beat-boxing and periodically rapping about students becoming involved with the school’s activities. Following thereafter was as an organic discussion that was open to students who volunteered to speak.

One student brought up concerns with the withdrawal date, which she thought was too soon.

“The date that students can withdraw isn’t necessarily set in stone,” said Zuriaw. “That is discussed in committees that students are supposed to sit in on.”

Zuriaw explained that the decisions are made through shared governance committees.

The AS meeting drew a crowd of less than 65 people, including AS members. Zuriaw admitted to poor planning and said they will try to improve for planned future meetings.

Dates will appear on the AS Facebook page, as well as information about other events.

AS vice president, directors leave post Elizabeth moss News Editor The Associated Students at Santa Monica College are left with three vacant positions after the vice president and two directors stepped down within the last two months due to personal reasons.

Jesus Vasquez, vice president, Emmitt Rivers, director of student services, and London Tran, director of academic support and shared governance, have resigned since the end of the fall semester.

“I think overall, people have resigned because they have limitations on their times," said Vasquez.

Vasquez, who was attending to personal matters at the time, informed the AS of his resignation on the first day of the semester.

“I resigned because I wanted to be more fair to AS,” he said.

Vasquez said his main focus will be helping campus groups he considers underrepresented, such as the Black Collegians and the Latino Center. He will continue working with the AS in some capacity, he said.

Rivers said that he began contemplating resignation toward the end of the fall semester, and made the decision to leave his position because he felt he "should be doing something different."

“I didn’t want to come back to AS and not put in as many hours as last semester, and not be as enthralled,” said Rivers.

Instead, Rivers will divide his time between the Black Collegians organization and performing in school productions.

Tran said he originally had no intentions of returning to SMC this semester. He decided to pursue an idea he had for a social networking site.

“To be honest, being in AS wasn’t really helping me,” Tran said.

He ultimately decided to return to SMC, and is currently looking at beginning a club on campus focused on developing start-up companies or business ideas.

“I can create something that’s not been done before, and that’s more important,” he said.

Although Tran said he felt his work for AS was meaningful, Tran hoped to start something original.

"Being in AS is not creating something new," he said.

AS President Parker Jean described the vacancies as a “flashback” to fall semester, when three directors resigned before the start of the term.

But Jean is also understanding of his peers' obligations outside of the AS. “If some of them were to stay, they wouldn't be able to fulfill their duties,” he said.

Jean will take on the AS director role of academic support and shared governance until the position is filled.

Last Thursday marked the final day to turn in applications for AS positions.

Bookstore prices addressed

Sara cheshm Mishi Staff Writer When a new semester starts at Santa Monica College, the daunting sight of students waiting in line to purchase textbooks and school materials at the bookstore is familiar.

Students who work toward good grades know that textbooks are a necessity, but students like Mel Rudkiewicz are still not any happier about spending $400 each semester on textbooks.

Many students like Rudkiewicz associate the bookstore with high costs. The guidelines for textbooks differ among departments. For example, the department of modern languages has agreed that the textbooks should be consistent throughout the department to alleviate spending.

“There have been situations where the prices have been too high, and the department has said ‘no’ to buying the book,” said Jeanne Laurie, administrative assistant for the department of modern languages.

According to Laurie, the publisher printed the books in paperback, which enabled lower prices of the books.

In other departments, different textbooks are required depending on the teacher and the level of the course.

“I don’t think our goal in the bookstore is to make a profit,” Board of Trustees member Rob Rader said. “Rather, we are merely trying to break even and provide a place where students can conveniently obtain their materials.”

Students who switch to alternate options — such as purchasing online books or used copies from students, are not supporting on-campus job opportunities — according to the bookstore manager David Dever. A quarter of the bookstore’s margin profit goes to pay for student wages, shipping costs and operation maintenance.

The bookstore is one of the few places where international students have the opportunity to work.

“We are like a big family here,” operations assistant Karen Lehman said. “There is so much more to this place than selling books.”

Supporting fellow students is important, but another positive aspect about the bookstore is that purchased textbooks are of dependable quality.

The books I have purchased from SMC have been better quality than those I have bought online, which is why I prefer to purchase my school material from the bookstore.

The bookstore also provides the convenience of an on-campus location that has everything a student would need for their SMC education. Although it seems some students make it a priority to complain about the bookstore, it would be severely missed if it were shut down.

Whether it is the job opportunities or the effort to provide textbooks to make education more simple, the SMC bookstore does what is best for the students and should be acknowledged and supported by the students.

Bright future for gay rights

An increasing amount of Americans have been clamoring for gay rights since the passage of Proposition 8 in 2008.

Lately, it looks like their wish will finally come true.

On Monday, less than a dozen antigay protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church were met with profound contempt by hundreds of students and their supporters at Santa Monica High School.

The number of supporters, compared to the anti-gay protesters, reflects an increasing change in the attitude toward gay rights.

An internal Associated Press memo, released two weeks ago, said that “husband” or “wife,” in reference to same-sex couples, “may be used in AP content if those involved

have regularly used those terms or in quotes attributed to them.”

Last week, the AP Stylebook’s “husband, wife” entry was announced to read: “Regardless of sexual orientation, husband or wife is acceptable in all references to individuals in any legally recognized marriage.”

Considered the reference choice for newsrooms everywhere, the guidelines have influenced what readers consider to be the acceptable way to talk about sensitive social issues. The needed correction is a major breakthrough for gay rights on the print medium.

Nationally, a legal brief filed Friday by the Justice Department asked the justices of the

Supreme Court to strike down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, which bars recognition of same-sex marriages in the granting of federal benefits.

Dozens of prominent Republicans — including top advisers to the George W. Bush administration and Meg Whitman, who had supported Prop. 8 when she ran for California governor three years ago — signed a separate legal brief Monday, arguing that gay people have a constitutional right to marry.

With high hopes that the Obama administration steps up, society could be facing what the Constitution has been promising all along — equal rights.

Worth more than it costs

Jasmin Huynh Staff Writer Community colleges are sometimes considered “fall back” schools meant for unmotivated students who were not admitted to a university. However, my experience at Santa Monica College has shown me that many students attend the college because of financial reasons, rather than not being accepted to a four-year institute.

Seeing the high tuition fees, expenses and loans on the list of the financial aid packages that some universities had offered me, I knew I had to take the less expensive route: two years of community college, followed by two years at a university.

Many other SMC students have come across the same financial dilemmas, using community college as an alternative to get a degree for less money.

Student Amanda Dove, a first-year chemistry major, was accepted by several universities right out of high school. Due to financial concerns, she decided to attend

SMC and then transfer.

“SMC is a stepping stone to transfer to other colleges with sometimes even better opportunities.”

Others like second-year student Erica Matsubara, a graphic design and business major, spent time at SMC to avoid skyrocketing tuition fees and to figure out their future career paths.

“I didn’t know what I wanted to do, so I took general education classes here,” Matsubara said. “I thought I’d go to a community college first [and] figure out what I wanted to do before I jump into something big. It saved me money. It made me realize what I want to major in.”

Students who take some time off after high school also tend to find their place at SMC. Second-year student David Alas, who is planning on applying to the University of Columbia this fall, served in the army after high school.

“Here you have students who come right out of high school, and older students who go back to school,” Alas said. “For nontraditional students, a community college is the perfect place to start the journey.”

Alas said that he did not apply to universities because he could not afford them. He chose SMC because he heard it was one of the greatest transfer schools to four-year universities, an aspect that attracts many to SMC. English professor Jeffrey Sosner, who teaches at both SMC and California State University Northridge, recognizes the attitudinal differences.

“Overall, I see more dedication from @t h e _ c o r s a i r •

students at SMC than from students at CSUN,” Sosner said. “At SMC, I see a lot of students who are either international students, or coming from a slightly disadvantaged socio-economic place. They tend to appreciate that they have this opportunity. Attendance tends to be better here than at CSUN.” Although respected colleges and high costs seem to go together, SMC students receive a great value for a fraction of the expected price. Since my first semester at SMC, I have met supportive professors who have encouraged their students to step out of their comfort zone, committed and motivated classmates, and competent counselors who genuinely care.

The college’s credentials and fees are not the only factors that attract students to SMC. The location itself attracts many to the college. “[SMC] is in a great part of Santa Monica,” Alas said. “Because [of that], there’s such a diverse medley of people that come here from such different backgrounds and cultures.”

SMC also provides the opportunity to educate students beyond textbooks and lectures. The college offers a wide variety of student employment programs, as well as discounted study abroad courses and internships.

Four-year universities are well worth their hefty expenses, but when worried about college costs and post-college debt, spending two years at a transfer college, like SMC, is what many students would take into consideration.

Fashionable Oscars

The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising is celebrating its 21st annual “Art of Motion Picture Costume Design” exhibition, which features costumes from films that have been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design.

The exhibition has been open since Feb. 12, and has already seen visitors from all over Southern California, Mexico, Brazil, and Japan, according to FIDM alumnus, fashion designer and “Project Runway” star Nick Verreos.

The walls are lined with vision boards — black boards with sketches of clothing a character should wear — color swatches, textures for the clothes, and other details.

Each board has fabric scraps to help bring these ideas to life, along with a complete final sketch and a computer-generated picture of the characters in the Oscarnominated films.

“We had a lot of connections with the Costume Guild and Costume Design and we thought, why not showcase the costumes of the films that are released every year?”

Verreos says. “It was the perfect marriage, and so here we are, 21 years later.”

According to Verreos, deciding which movies will be showcased is a process that is done by chance.

“It’s mostly having a pretty good guess which movies will be nominated,” he says.

Verreos says the costumes are brought in “literally a week after they've been nominated.”

“I have a feeling that somebody’s telling them secrets behind the scenes,” he says

Several of the costume designers were at last week's opening night gala for the exhibition, according to Verreos. He also says that FIDM tries to showcase clothing designs from alumni.

“We always like to make sure we feature designers who came from FIDM,” he says.

Verreos also describes which costumes catch his eye.

“I really love the fantasy ones, like ‘Snow White and the Huntsman,’” he says. “It really almost represents runway couture.

When we see those costumes Charlize Theron wore as the queen, they’re very Alexander McQueen, and I’m drawn to that as a fashion designer myself.”

Aramis Richards, who is studying fashion design at Los Angeles Trade Tech college, is a fan of the late Eiko Ishioka, who worked on the film “Mirror Mirror.”

Richards likes how Ishioka was able to “use all of the colors of the color palette and the phenomenal way her choice of colors brings everything together.”

Richards also feels costume designer Paco Delgado did a brilliant job with his work in

“Les Miserables.” “[Delgado] really kept true to the traditional time period, but added just enough color to not have the costumes be too dark,” he says.

FIDM museum and gallery is open and free to the public Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located at 919 S. Grand Ave., in downtown Los Angeles, just blocks away from the world famous Staples Center and LA Live.

The exhibition will be on display until April 27.

Jonesin’ for some Jones Niklas Thim Staff Writer It all started in 1972, when the man with the hat and mustache, Larry Jones, took a part-time job at Santa Monica College, teaching in the photo program he had graduated from nine years earlier.

At the end of this semester, his run of 41 years as an SMC photography professor will come to an end.

"Of course he will be missed," says Ford Lowcock, chair of the photo department at SMC. "But we have great employees, ready to take this program further."

Jones shares Lowcock's view.

"The other teachers are younger, so they don't have the same nostalgia as I do," Jones says. "I think that will be good for the program. They will be able to take it to the next step."

Jones' reasoning behind staying at the college for over four decades is simple.

"I love when a student gets it, when they understand what I am teaching," Jones says.

"That is the only reason I've been teaching."

However, while some students "get it," others do not. Jones considers not being able to reach every student and help them realize their full potential as his only failure as a teacher.

"It is frustrating sometimes, and I wish I had had more time," he says.

Photo student Niklas Marklund had Jones as a professor in two photography classes,

and describes him as "loud and sarcastic." "[Jones is] sometimes on the edge of being mean, but always in a funny way," Marklund says. "He tells a lot of stories about his life, and you just never get tired of listening."

"When I first met him, I thought he was kind of gruff," says Lowcock. "But once you get to know him, he really is a great guy."

Jones describes himself as an odd character, and not one for following rules or patterns.

"I like the fact that I'm different," he says.

"That's why I'm left-handed."

There is no doubt Jones has had a great impact on his students and will be missed.

"He is very helpful and really cares about his students," Marklund says. "His door is always open."

Apart from the fact that he will not be teaching anymore, not much is going to change in Jones' life once he retires.

"People always ask me, 'so what are you going to do now?'" he says. "Continue shooting, of course."

He plans on building a house, spending more time in nature and traveling. Even though he made a promise of never going back because of trauma, one of the destinations he'd like to travel to is Vietnam, where he served as an aerial infrared photographer in the Navy.

Jones has never had an alternative career other than photography.

"I have never done anything else, and I have never wanted to," he says. "I have loved every second of being a photographer."

‘Boom Box Guy’ revealed

Kandace Santillana Staff Writer On the quad of the Santa Monica College main campus, music can be heard playing from a boom box on the ground with a guy dancing and smiling next to it.

Everyone knows the “Boom Box Guy,” a familiar campus figure among students for the past three years. But not everyone knows Manuel Henriquez.

Henriquez, 26, is a graphic design major at SMC who hopes to open his own clothing line one day.

His music-playing actually did not start at SMC, but when he was attending Los Angeles Community College. The response he received for his music at LACC was not the same as the one he now receives at SMC. “At LACC, no one payed attention to my music,” Henriquez says. “But here at SMC, I see that it gets attention, and people love the music.”

Henriquez grew up listening to different styles of music. He listened to heavy metal with his dad and country music with his mom. Listening to both genres was something he enjoyed, and it made him want to explore what else was out there.

With his background, Henriquez came up with the idea of sharing music as an inspiration to share different types of music the way religions share their beliefs.

SMC student Cindy Martinez, 21, likes the fact that with Henriquez playing his music, the quad is never quiet.

“If he ever leaves, I think I would miss listening to his music and just seeing him stand there,” Martinez says. “He has

become part of an SMC tradition.”

SMC student Leslie Torres, 19, enjoys the unique playlist Henriquez uses to entertain students.

“I like the music he plays,” Torres says. “It is every kind you could think of. But what I like most is that he keeps it classic with the boom box.”

Former student succeeds in film Jasmin Huynh

Staff Writer Actress, producer and writer are only a few ways to describe former Santa Monica College student Carly-Ann Giene.

Giene was already a passionate actress in high school, but discovered her talent for writing and producing when she attended SMC. "Evan Somers' advanced screenwriting class got me opened up to other aspects of film than acting, like writing, filming and producing," Giene said. "Since then, I finished a feature length screenplay, and it got me into writing all these shorts that I do and produce myself. [His class] is why I switched from theater to film studies."

The movies that she watched in her film classes influenced her writing and her perspective on films.

"It turned me to a film snob," she said.

"I always critically analyze it, but I also have a better appreciation of the details of production that I have never noticed before."

But the courses at SMC did not only show her the other side of the camera.

They also improved her acting skills.

"I became more well-rounded and experienced because you understand what they're trying to accomplish and what they need you to do," said Giene. "It kind of helps you to work better with the crew."

She decided to go to college after attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles because she was required to earn a degree to receive a United States work visa.

She chose SMC due to its reputation as the number one transfer school in California and its alumni, including famous actors

With the connections Giene made at SMC, she started her own production company, "Giene Entertainment," and began publishing her own videos on YouTube.

Her first comedic short film was "Carly the Clown Eliminator Episode 1," which featured Giene fighting scary clowns. The video gained more than 20,000 views within the first two weeks that it was uploaded.

She has also appeared in other productions, playing a robot in the play "Dark Side of the Moon" based on Pink Floyd's album, a ninja assassin in the "M.A.R.R.A" by Jeanne Jo — next to "Blade Runner" actress Sean Young — and a zombie guitarist in the music video "Don't Let Her Pull You Down" by the punk band New Found Glory.

Her performance as one of the living dead came in handy in her most recent and still unreleased project, "Zom-B-Team," produced by Here's the Kitten Productions.

"This improv-based comedy pilot is one of the projects I am most proud of because it was challenging since I had to create a character in the moment without rehearsing," she said.

Giene advised all future fellow SMC graduates who want to start a career in the film industry to become well-rounded, and to simultaneously focus on their expertise.

"Broaden your horizon; watch tons of movies," she said. "The more you see, the more creative you become and able to relate to people. But find out what you're good at even though it's not what you've envisioned. Pursue your talent and share it."

“I thought myself to be [on MTV] since I also represent music,” says Henriquez.

He now has a new MTV T-shirt that he had custom-made last year.

When Henriquez transfers to California State University, Long Beach to continue his education in graphic design, he plans to “retire” from music sharing. He hopes that one day someone will continue his

tradition of standing on the SMC quad playing music.

“I am willing to teach the new generation how to control the music so that they could continue on sharing music,” he says. “You need to learn to control your music, like keeping the volume at a good level.”

Even though Henriquez became known as the “Boom Box Guy” throughout the SMC community, now students, staff or anyone who passes by can salute him by his name: Manuel Henriquez.

LA survey reveals increase in diabetes Elizabeth Moss News Editor

A survey released by the Los Angeles County of Public Health shows that the number of adults with diabetes in LA increased approximately from seven to 10 percent since 1997, an overall 50 percent increase.

“You have certain ethnic groups that have a greater risk,” says Franco Reyna, associate director at the American Diabetes Association, Los Angeles. “A lot of these people are living in conditions that put them at risk.”

Reyna is referring to people from families with a history of diabetes, and those who live with obese family members. He also mentions that people who live in poorer neighborhoods are more likely to develop diabetes due to bad diets and lack of exercise.

“Being in the city, there isn’t a park to exercise at, [and] there isn’t a market to get healthy food from,” says Reyna, who recommends “becoming aware of the disease and its impact, especially if you are at risk.”

According to the ADA, five percent of people with diabetes have type one diabetes, usually occurring in children and young adults. In this case, the body does not produce insulin that is needed to convert sugar into energy.

“Type one is more a freak thing,” says Danielle Westbrook, 18, an SMC student who was diagnosed with type one diabetes at the age of eight.

With type one diabetes, the pancreas usually fails, and the body may depend on insulin to prevent the body from slipping into a coma, she says.

Type two, the most common form of diabetes, means that cells in the body are not responding to insulin properly; or that the body is not producing enough insulin.

“All of the body is affected by diabetes, and the danger is really hyperglycemia, which is high blood sugar,” says Dr. Eric Kavussin, chief of the division of health and performance enhancement at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana.

“This high blood sugar causes deleterious effects on protein, and causes microvascular disease (loss of small vessels to the eye, foot, kidney) or cardiovascular problems and atherosclerosis,” Kavussin states in an e-mail.

Preventing the onset of diabetes may be as hard as watching what food to eat, but it can also be as easy as incorporating a healthier lifestyle.

“I didn’t completely restrict myself, but I did limit the sweets,” says Westbrook.

“Even if I went to a kid’s party, I had that voice in the back of my head.”

Westbrook suggests to those who drive to school to park a little farther away and walk the extra distance.

“Exercise doesn’t cost anything,” he says.

On Feb. 11, Pope Benedict XVI announced that he will step down as spiritual leader to the Catholic faith, ending his almost eight-year term in the papacy. The unexpected resignation has left the world wondering the current fate of the church.

It has been over 600 years since a pope has voluntarily stepped down from his position.

In an official statement released by the Vatican, Pope Benedict stated he is no longer able to live up to his papal responsibilities “due to advanced age,” and will officially resign on Thursday.

The 85-year-old pope served as a confidant and adviser to his predecessor, the late Pope John Paul II, who passed away at 84 in 2005, according to Rev. David Guffey of the St. Monica Catholic Community.

“He watched Pope John Paul II’s health slowly deteriorate from age,” said Guffey.

“I admire his decision, and I think it shows a lot of courage as a leader to be able to step down as he did. He’s handled himself in a way that I’m confident will work.”

Benedict’s upcoming resignation, coupled with the recent developments of alleged internal cover-ups, has left many Catholics with a sense of confusion and uncertainty

about the future of their church.

The recent media spotlight on the church has frustrated Santa Monica College student Dante Bates to the point where she no longer feels comfortable attending.

“Church was supposed to be the one place free from politics or scandal,” said Bates. “If those who are supposed to be representing God can’t keep it together, then who can?”

The pope’s resignation came just shy of two weeks after former Archbishop of Los Angeles Roger Mahony was relieved of his duties for alleged attempts to cover-up child sexual abuse cases within the church.

These controversies have urged many parishes to come together as a community, as SMC student James Berardo noted.

“My parish has encouraged us to not to dwell on anything we may hear about the church on the news in the following weeks,” said Berardo. “I have faith the church will only be stronger after something like this.”

The papal conclave to determine Benedict’s successor is set to commence between March 15 and 20.

“With every new pope, there’s a fresh start, a new beginning,” said Guffey. “I think that sense of vitality will usher in a lot of good for the church.”

Santa Monica police chief honored for black history month The excitement in the room was palpable.

Many had come to hear the inspiring words of the first woman to become police chief in California.

Chief Jacqueline A. Seabrooks was invited by the Black Collegians at Santa Monica College on Thursday to speak about her experiences and struggles as an African American female rising through the ranks of the Santa Monica Police Department.

“Why do we celebrate our history only in February?” Seabrooks said in her lecture. “Being black in America should be celebrated everyday.”

Seabrooks told the story of her upbringing in a family that valued higher education.

“I always knew I was going to college, but I thought I was going to be a lawyer,” she said.

While attending Pierce College in Woodland Hills, Seabrooks said she applied and was accepted as a police officer for the California State Police Division.

According to the SMPD’s website, Seabrooks was, at the age of 19, one of the youngest ever to serve the state while she worked for the Los Angeles office.

“It was the first time I really experienced racism,” said Seabrooks.

Despite the challenges she faced, Seabrooks said her time at the academy was positive to her growth as a police officer.

“I don’t say it to trivialize it; the academy is where you become a police officer,” Seabrooks said. “I got through that experience, and after the academy, I noticed I loved being a police officer.”

“At first it wasn’t easy,” said Seabrooks, of her first few years at the SMPD. “They didn’t know how to handle a woman at the department, and they didn’t

know how to treat a black person,” she said.

Seabrooks went on to talk about her motivations to climb the professional ladder at the SMPD. “I noticed what the sergeants were doing

and I thought, why are they doing this?

How are they treating people?” Seabrooks said. “I wanted to change that, and I learned that if you want change, you have to become that change.”

This thought process pushed Seabrooks to take and pass the sergeant test, and in 1990, she became the first woman to serve as a police sergeant.

From that point on in her career, Seabrooks progressively continued to break barriers.

In 1996 she became police lieutenant, then police captain in 2000. In 2007, she rose to the top as police chief for the Inglewood Police Department. Finally, in 2012 she took over the same position but for the SMPD, according to the SMPD’s website.

When asked about why she chose a life in law enforcement, Seabrooks said it was meant to be.

“I don’t know that I chose a life in law enforcement; I think it chose me,” she said in an interview. “I just happened to be at the right place where someone could give me an application at a point, and then I did the follow-through, and the rest has just been what it’s been.”

Being recognized as an inspiring figure in the police force is something Seabrooks takes in stride.

“My job makes me a role model and I understand that,” said Seabrooks.

“Sometimes it can be tiring, but it’s never tiresome.”

Seabrooks said she believes she has, and will continue to have, a positive effect on her community.

“I get to meet people; I get to make a difference,” she said. “I think my role here in life is to help and to make a difference, and I think I’m doing that.”

Keeping healthy resolutions Rona navales Staff Writer

With spring break approaching, many people have a new motivation to consider resuming their New Year’s resolution to live a healthy and fit lifestyle.

But for many, including athletes, it can be difficult to find the time to fit in workouts with busy schedules.

“I work out even when I’m on vacation by finding a treadmill,” says Santa Monica College athlete Aaron Rogers.

“I like to do beach workouts and cardio because if you get lazy it’s going to be bad because you need to be in tip-top shape for the season,” says Rogers.

While many people contemplate their motivation for living healthier lives, athletes force themselves to have a routine in order to continue actively participating in sports.

“I don’t know if athletes have any better habits,” says SMC fitness instructor Trevor Shickman. “Generally, athletes pick up those habits because they’ve been doing it their whole lives.”

“It’s about finding a comfortable place that you can be successful in,” says Shickman.

“Pretty much every diet has the same effectiveness,” he says. “You can go through all of them, and statistically they all work the same.”

“You need that physical and mental energy for willpower to make decisions when you actually don’t want to do something.”

muscle; it’s like literally working out,” says NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” trainer Brett Hoebel. “If you work out too much and the muscle gets fatigued, then you won’t have any energy to make proper choices.”

“An example would be the one currency in your body, energy,” says Hoebel. “You need that physical and mental energy for willpower to make decisions when you actually don’t want to do something.”

But some find it easy to fall for temptation and cheat.

“There’s a great pizza parlor that you love on your way home,” says Hoebel. “How about finding another way to go home?”

Hoebel says the best way to motivate those who are ready to give up is “you have got to know your why.”

Many that maintain consistent healthy lifestyles are not those that you would expect.

“People who are more consistent about staying in shape are typically business people, not veteran college athletes,” says Equinox certified trainer Mackenzie Mollohan.

“People who are relocating want to

maintain some part of their lifestyle,” says Mollohan. “They want to stay strong and look good.”

“The key to consistency is to make a date for your workout,” Jennifer Aniston’s personal yoga instructor and health trainer Mandy Ingber states in an e-mail. “Also, moderation is key.”

“The funny thing is that exercise encourages people to be healthy,” says Ingber. “When you know you are going to wake up early to work out, you don’t go drinking the night before. And if you spent an hour working out, you consider what you put into your body more consciously because you know what it took to burn those calories.”

Ingber also advises against giving up if there are no results in the first week of a new healthy routine.

“People tend to get discouraged when they don’t get immediate results,” says Ingber. “It’s best to create short-term goals that are manageable, that one can accomplish.”

“Fitness is not a goal, it’s a lifestyle,” she says.

Citrus sours Corsairs’ run at conference title Trevor Angone Staff Writer It was just two weeks ago when David Nwaba led the Santa Monica College men’s basketball team to a nail-biting victory against the Citrus College Owls.

This time, the Owls had the last hoot.

Down five to start the second half in Thursday’s game, the Owls turned that deficit into a two-point lead, using backto-back threes in the first two-and-a-half minutes, and never looking back.

Surprisingly, it was the Owls’ backup center Brent Watkins who scored six points in a two-minute period that pushed the Owl lead to eight.

With the Corsairs in the middle of a scoring drought, and center Admassu Williams on the bench, there was little they could do to stop the bleeding.

Contributing to the loss, was a questionable call that went against the Corsairs.

Down five with time running out, a whistle was blown for what appeared to be a blocking foul against Citrus. Instead, Nwaba was called for a questionable charge, which led to another Owl layup, essentially putting the game away.

Despite SMC head coach Jerome Jenkins’ intense motivational tactics, it was just too much for the Corsairs to overcome.

“I thrive off of my coach’s intensity; we all do,” said Corsairs’ guard Adam Griffin.

“When he’s pumped up, we’re all pumped up.”

Despite a valiant effort from Nwaba and Griffin with 32 combined points, it was just not the Corsairs’ night. The Owls shot over 40 percent from behind the arc, and had a handful of momentum boosting slamdunks.

“I see us taking bad shots and it frustrates me,” said Nwaba. “I need to take the game over more often; that’s one thing I’m lacking right now.”

Even with the loss looming, Jenkins could still be heard from the stands trying to inspire his young freshman team with words of wisdom.

“You’ve got to get over that hump in life,” said Jenkins. “You’ve got to get over that hump to get to the next level.”

Though the game did not turn out in the Corsairs’ favor, the team was not lacking hometown support.

“It’s a 45-minute drive from Pierce, but it’s worth it,” said Christy Daugherty, Williams’ high school sweetheart.

With the first round of the Western State Conference tournament over, the Corsairs defeated the Glendale Gauchos in a consolation round on Friday, led by starting guard Keilan Horton’s 37 points. Nwaba chipped in with 23.

Even with a solid season in the books the Corsairs did not qualify for the playoffs.

The cheers from the rival Citrus College crowd rang out from the stands as Aniese Palmore missed one free throw after another on Saturday.

But none of that would matter as she would put the team on her back and stand tall with the pressure at its highest.

Palmore would bury a three-pointer with 9.6 seconds remaining in the game, which effectively sealed the Santa Monica College women's basketball team's 46-45 victory over the Citrus Owls in the final game of the season.

The once boisterous opposing crowd was forced into silence.

"Aniese is our horse out there on the court, she holds us together," said head coach Lydia Strong.

Despite missing her free throws, Palmore's confidence was still high and she let the ball fly.

"I saw a big switched out on me so I took the shot," said Palmore.

Palmore led all scorers with 18 points, pulled down 12 rebounds, and dished out four assists while playing solid defense. She shot 50 percent from the three-point line, and none was bigger than the one at the end.

"I'm glad I made it; I had to redeem myself for missing all those free throws," said Palmore.

The road victory was an impressive one for a team that has struggled all season long. The Lady Corsairs came into Saturday night's game on a two-game losing streak, dropping their final home game on sophomore night.

To add to their woes, the Lady Corsairs were without three key players, leaving them shorthanded and giving them a serious size disadvantage.

Despite that challenge, they put on perhaps their most inspired performance of the season, out-toughing the Owls in a game that was very physical from the start, and included three technical fouls and a couple near altercations.

Already adding to the emotionally charged atmosphere was a strange incident that occurred late in the second half.

With 1:35 left in the game, and SMC ahead 42-41, Citrus guard Sarah Rebibo and SMC guard Kierra Jackson were involved in a dust-up that led to double fouls being called.

Rebibo stepped to the free-throw line and knocked down both shots. There was only one problem. Rebibo had picked up her fifth foul on the play and should have fouled out.

"I made sure I went over to the scorers table and told them it was a correctable error," said Strong.

The referees huddled near midcourt and conferred on what to do while insults and derogatory comments rained down on them from the bewildered crowd.

After several minutes and discussions with the head coaches from both teams, Rebibo's free throws were taken away and play was able to resume.

"It was a good win; our sophomores got to go out on top," said Strong.

With most players being freshman, the majority are expected to return next year.

"I'm coming back, and rebounding and turnovers are the major things we need to work on," said Palmore.
