This is a completely free magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place.
I encourage anyone with a visual arts event to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for your exhibition, classes, workshops, talks etc.
Let’s get the arts out there!
Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible.

The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas.
The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.
I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.
I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.
I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.
Thank you for understanding.

‘A Look Through Richard’s Lens’
By Cheryl Harewood, Nation News
Fine art photographer Adrian Richards exhibiting at the Gallery of Caribbean Art feature in the Nation News.
By Cheryl Harewood, Nation News
When he is not performing his professional role as a dental surgeon, award-winning photographer Dr Adrian Richards can be found mostly at the beach, with camera in hand, capturing people, sights, sunsets and more.
Come Sunday, he will be the sole exhibitor of photography during the opening of Contemporary Male Artist Visual Arts Exhibition at the Gallery of Caribbean Art, Speightstown, St Peter. He will be joined by other seasoned artists such as Ahmad Rasheed Boodhoo, Clairmonte Mapp, Denzil Mann, Everick Lynton, Glenroy Jordan, Mario Holder, Neville Legall and Virgil Broodhagen.
The Harrison College alumnus, who has been a dental surgeon for over 35 years, has spent 22 of those years behind the camera as a serious contemporary photographer.
Since 2004, he has been working across conceptual fine art, fashion and portraiture. His practice explores perception, identity and visual memory and his works have been exhibited both locally and internationally, including at PRIZM Ar Fair, during Art Basel Miami Week, in Miami, at the Argentine Embassy alongside members of the Barbados Photographic Society at the Embassy of Argentina and the Caribbean Brushstrokes Art Gallery, Pelican Village. This will be his first time exhibiting at the Gallery of Caribbean Art.
A former student of the University of Pennsylvania, US, where he completed courses in sculpture, painting and drawing, Richards has always possessed a love for the arts.
"I have always been interested in art and never stopped doing art. I can paint and draw, but I haven't focused on that in any great degree. I love photography and what is involved in the process of photography. I especially love digital photography. It allows me to take photos and process them a lot faster than film. I have always been intrigued with the captured image.
I actually started taking photos seriously in 2003, when I took images in Africa. I realised I really love composing
Richards won his first National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA) gold award the very first time he entered NIFCA for his photo which captured a bird flying into a beautiful sunset. Since then, he has won several gold, silver, and bronze awards over the period of a decade.
Capturing images at the beach is where he finds his greatest satisfaction in photography.
"I love to photograph images at the beach. I go on long walks on the beach and I always take a camera with me. I also do a lot of abstracts while there, but I love portraits of people. In fact, abstracts, portraits and fashion are my favourites.
I tend to work now on projects, so I usually have projects on mind when I am shooting."
About the upcoming all-male showing, he shared, “This photographic project came out of my frequent beach walks where I am often in deep reflection about my life and life here in post-colonial Barbados. I look for abstraction and astral symbolism to map my shifting psychological terrain, moving between states of hope, suspension, and feeling trapped. The images function as emotional coordinates rather than literal seascapes.
Water, sunlight, stone and sand become environment and metaphor: dimensions of possibility, reflection, and pressure, where the self is continuously negotiated
“It is not so much about the literal object but what I am feeling at the time.“
Richards has chosen to display three representative images in the upcoming exhibition.
Mohita Shenoy, director at the Gallery of Caribbean Art believes that Richards, along with the other exhibitors, will, in their own way. give the public a piece of themselves during the showcase.
"These artists all bring their own unique and iconic styles into the fray, along with their own referred mediums of creation and techniques. panning from nature-filled acrylic paintings to abstract digital photography, each artist has carefully crafted pieces inspired by Barbadian daily life, the natural world and their own personal reflections."

Am I a Bad Girl, Nanny? Cries of Innocence and of Experience
by Joscelyn Gardner
February 27th - October 3rd at the Barbados Museum & Historical Society.
“The BMHS is pleased to announce the exhibition Am I a Bad Girl, Nanny? Cries of Innocence and of Experience!
In this new body of work, internationally recognised Barbadian artist Joscelyn Gardner engages with two ambrotypes in the museum’s historic photograph collection as sites of fragments, silences, and ethical tension. Through lithography, embroidery, and layered material processes, she imagines a visual world seen through the eyes of Eva Douglas Richards, the child in the care of Harriet Thomas Weekes, depicted in a rare shared portrait from the 1850s. This exhibition invites us to reflect on the complexities of colonial legacies shaped by care, power, and intimacy.”

Harriet Thomas Weekes: The Right to Opacity at The Barbados Museum & Historical Society. Feb 27th - Oct 3rd.
“Announcing the exhibition Harriet Thomas Weekes: The Right to Opacity, which engages two rare photographic records of a Black Barbadian woman who lived from enslavement into legal freedom (1815–1897).
Rather than seeking to tell her story in full, this exhibition embraces what cannot be fully known, honouring Harriet without reducing her to the limits of the colonial archive.
Through photographs, documents, and community voices, visitors are invited into a space of listening, reflection, and shared meaning-making, where presence matters more than completeness.”

This exhibition, titled ‘Black & White Moments’, aims to showcase the remarkable talents of the members of the Barbados Photographic Society;
Definition of Black & White Photography:
Black and white photography is a photographic style that captures images using shades of grey, ranging from black to white, rather than full colour. It emphasizes contrast, texture, lighting, and composition, often highlighting mood, emotion, and timeless qualities. This style is commonly used for artistic expression, documentary work, and historical photography, as it can evoke a sense of nostalgia or focus attention on form and content without the distraction of color.
Conclusion:
Black & White Moments promises to be an intriguing exhibition that highlights the versatility and artistic potential of black & white photography. We eagerly anticipate the participation of the talented members of the Barbados Photographic Society and look forward to showcasing their exceptional works at the Caribbean Brushstrokes Gallery in April 2026.
We are confident that Black & White Moments will be a significant cultural event, drawing art enthusiasts and photographers alike.

When the all-female art exhibition Echo opens at the Gallery of Caribbean Art, in Speightstown, St Peter, on March 8, award-winning artist Sian Pampellonne will be among the 11 women showcasing their work.
Sian, who has participated in numerous art exhibitions over the years, is described as one who was "born an artist in a formidable line of artists". Now the third generation, it came as little surprise that she would choose to pursue art.
Her story began in the twin-isle state of Trinidad and Tobago, where she was born and lived until the age of four, when her family migrated to Barbados. From her formative years through to her adolescence, Sian's creative spirit was nurtured and moulded by her grandfather, celebrated Caribbean artist Gordon Parkinson, whom she credits as being her principal mentor.
Recalling countless afternoons spent with her grandfather as his de facto apprentice, she was taught to channel her pent-up energies, unexpressed thoughts and feelings into creating works of art using whatever treasures she could find in and around his studio. Where words failed her, art became her speech and her expression.
"My grandfather taught me to look at the world through the eyes of an artist, where colours are endless and nothing is as it seems. I was taught to use art as a form of self-expression and experimentation.
"He instilled in me the tools and techniques which I could use to explore the possibilities of my creative self. Anyone can paint an aesthetically pleasing picture, but an artist hones those skills needed to paint with emotion. Above all, he taught me there is no such thing as bad art’.”
Growing up in a creative environment, Sian was always fascinated with the mental characteristics, behaviours and interaction of the people she encountered, particularly the young and curiously enquiring minds of children. This natural curiosity led her to enrol in the University of the West Indies to complete a course in child psychology. However, despite her interest, she could not envisage herself having a full-time career that did not involve art.
In 1989, she was accepted into the associates of arts in communication design programme at the International Fine Arts College in Miami, Florida. She graduated Summa Cum Laude and was made the valedictorian of her graduating year. She went on to obtain a bachelor of science in communication degree - Cum Laude - from the Florida International University.
Pursuing a degree in mass-communication, specialising in advertising, allowed me to marry my interest in psychology - namely what drives a consumer - with arts and design." Upon completion of her studies, Sian spent the next two years working as a creative director in the United States
In 1996, she returned to Trinidad and took up the post of graphic designer at an established advertising agency before taking a leap of faith and opening her own agency, Redhead Designs, a year later.
The year 2004 proved pivotal in Sian's life. That was when she decided to relocate to Barbados permanently and open her advertising studio next door to her grandfather's art studio - self-named Sian In Design Inc. Being in such close proximity to her mentor meant that Sian also resumed her daily routine of visiting his studio.
Although her main focus became building a successful business, one which has serviced some of the most recognisable companies and brands in Barbados and across the region, her passion for art could never be quelled.
“As a visual artist, I consider myself simple. My work is unpretentious and process driven. I generally ask questions of myself and others and paint that response. I have no preconceived notions. Each piece is a journey of understanding, growth and discovery.
I always have a concept of what I wish to paint to convey my thoughts, but I am not exactly sure about the what' or where it will end up. Our dialogue informs the work. Therefore, my reflections will capture the essence of our dialogue.
This makes the work exciting to me and I hope for the viewer as well, as what you see won't be predictable - or maybe it will. That is the thing. Everyone's perception comes from their personal experiences and viewpoint but are we willing to listen, truly listen to each other's view point without persecution. Being too honest can make everyone uncomfortable, including me, and I am acutely aware of this internal dialogue. But I am also very aware that in order for our perceived differences to lessen, we all have to get a little uncomfortable.
I have taken the position to paint my truths and let my work speak for how I feel about the time and space in which I presently live.“
Sian believes that the domain of the painter is one where words are bound to fail, and their world is filled with a broad spectrum of colour, fluid shapes, and limitless boundaries. She uses acrylics and mixed media to create intricate visual stories, each unique to its canvas. For her, art is catharsis. Her vivid and emotive pieces resonate deeply with their admirers, both those who fall in love in passing and those who become avid collectors of her work.
Though her recognisable artworks adorn the walls of many local and international collectors, each one is a piece of her story that will never quite be purged from her innately creative spirit. Over the years, she has created a full line of Sian art. It is inspired merchandise showcasing prints of her art.
“I created the line so that art can be accessible to and celebrated by everyone. My entire line is produced locally."
For the upcoming art exhibition Echo, which will run until April 8, Sian is looking for a show where everything she exhibits will have an echo - a reaction of sorts.
Meanwhile, she continues to work both as a successful designer and an established artist.

‘Grenada returns to Venice with a powerful exchange’ Grenada Pavilion — 61st International Art Exhibition, Venice 2026
16 February 2026 in Arts/Culture/Entertainment, PRESS RELEASE
https://nowgrenada.com/.../grenada-returns-to-venice.../
Title: The Poetics of Correspondence
Venue: Spazio Berlindis, Cannaregio, Venice
9 May — 22 November 2026
“Grenada is set to make waves once again on the world stage as it marks its 9th participation in the prestigious Biennale di Venezia in Venice, Italy. This is a milestone moment that reinforces the nation’s widening scope in Caribbean contemporary art.
Presented by the Grenada Arts Council and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Creative Economy, the Grenada Pavilion 2026 offers a bold and timely exhibition titled The Poetics of Correspondence. Set in the historic maritime quarter of Cannaregio at Spazio Berlindis, the pavilion places Grenada at the crossroads of global cultural exchange.
Commissioner Susan Mains, appointed by Senator the Honourable Adrian Thomas, and Curator Daniele Radini Tedeschi bring together an exceptional team of artists and collaborators whose work explores islands as powerful networks of memory, creativity and connection.
Featured artists include Arthur Daniel, Jeverson Ramirez, Russell Watson, Edward Bowen, Lilo Nido and Chris Mast, joined by Italy-based collaborators Josine Dupont, Alexandra Kordas and The Holzwege Group.
Through immersive installations, time-based works, and collaborative interventions, the pavilion reflects Grenada’s identity as both an island and an intersection, local, regional, and global. It is a celebration of looking closely at quiet moments and observing otherwise imperceptible connections.
This 9th presentation is more than participation; it is positioning. Grenada continues to demonstrate how a small island nation can shape global narratives, deepen international partnerships, and expand opportunities for its creative sector. Venice 2026 represents economic, cultural and diplomatic visibility on one of the most influential art platforms in the world.
The 61st International Art Exhibition runs from 9 May to 22 November 2026, with the Grenada Pavilion inauguration taking place on 8 May 2026 at 4:30 pm at Spazio Berlindis. Cultural institutions, sponsors and media partners are invited to collaborate in making this landmark presentation a defining success for Grenada.

Fresh Milk's Call & Response Programme for Caribbean-based Contemporary Visual Artists - Phase 1!
https://freshmilkbarbados.com
“The Fresh Milk Art Platform is embarking on a region-wide research initiative catered to Caribbeanbased contemporary visual artists with a goal of establishing a deeper understanding of what is required for the visual art sector to be established and to flourish.
Rather than assume that we know what visual artists need, this collective Call & Response Programme will reflect a sense of unity by inviting inter-generational artists living and working in Barbados and the wider linguistic region to actively participate in the information gathering phase. Fresh Milk will gather this research between 2025 and 2027 which will shape a tailor-made Response programme addressing some of the urgent needs expressed by cultural workers in a more targeted way.
The form will take approximately 20-30 minutes of your time, depending on your level of interest and engagement with each section. You are welcome to share this form with your peers nationally and regionally or coordinate a group session within your artist-led initiative, museum, gallery or art organisation as shared activity.
Thank you for your time! “

Sian Pampellonne and Tracey Williams
Their art tour adventure here

Artists Sian Pampellonne and Tracey Williams toured some of the Artists Studios
For all details of artists, studios, maps and directions with contact info go to https://www.artistsstudiotoursbarbados.com/
“Yesterday was everything and more. It was a day of support and camaraderie for my fellow artists and I was so excited to experience the other side of the ASTB -Artists Studio Tours Barbados.
The day started with the flowers in my front garden in full bloom and off I went to collect my friend and fellow artist, Tracey Williams. With brochure in hand, and selected studios marked out, we set off!
First stop was Lindsey Whelan Studio Lindsey Whelan with his guest artist, Laura Maddison Laura Maddison. Lindsey is a master craftsman of wood. His coffee table captured my attention as with his love of rotten wood to be made into lamps. Anyone who sees what others would dump and can find the beauty has my absolute vote. Laura’s jewelry and lamps are breathtaking!! My god. The sconces and hooks are just beautiful. Then there was her kids, budding artists and entrepreneurs, who were selling prints of their work for $10. Ya know who HAD to buy them!
From there we ventured to Julia Seymour’s studio Julia Seymour with guest artists, Heidi Berger Heidi Berger Art, Adriana Seymour Adriana Seymour and Julie-Anne King. Adriana, the paper basket and ladies hand bags queen, is now doing fabulous earrings and we both had to grab a pair! The art of these ladies is such stunning and I’m an avid collector of all their work. Awesome studio!!
Next up was Oneka Small Oneka Small whose work is pure magic!!!! And guest artist, Suzanne Davis Suzanne Davis. I Love Oneka. And we had a fabulous spirited discussion of what makes a piece of work finished. Okay. I yelled a lot. But the work is done!!! Seriously you guys. Look at the piece behind Oneka. It’s strong!! And my eye is on it.
Had to get some ceramicists in so we passed through Alicia Scott’s studio with guest artist, Ingrid Knapp Ingrid Knapp. Both love organic shapes and textures and it’s soo my jam. Sent a million pics to friends saying come see this studio. Ingrid has promised me she will do more “ugly fish” cus I am obsessed with them. Got myself an eel to go into a plant pot as he’s sooo darn cute.
Course we had to stop at the beautiful Cathy Cummins Cathy Cummins with her fab whysical art and fascination of ceramic shards. That woman got eagle eyes when she hikes. Again, an artist using found objects to create beauty. Picked up a series of her stunning cards. She’s hosting guest artist, Ashleigh Williams Ashleigh whose work I have long admired. Got two of her pen and water colour pieces to add to my collection and man was I excited!
Off to Princess Bilinda Johnson studio. Princess Bilinda JohnsonAnother artist using found objects. I love princess work. It’s chaotic, weird and absolutely beautiful. Her new piece using mannequins makes me so happy. She’s hosting fellow artists, Kay Morgan Kay Morgan whose work reminds me so much of Darla Trotman in its photographic detail of fauna. Just stunning, and Jan Kevan Marcelo Jan Kevan-Marcelo. I have wanted a piece of Jan’s work forever and I knew I was going home with one and I did!! Love love love love. And it’s already hanging on the wall.
Off to extraordinaire, Stephen Scott! Wonderful artisan and am the proud of owner of one of his bird pieces. Go see his studio, he will teach you how to carve!! He’s lovely. Stephen is hosting the dynamic duo of Joy-Ann Joy-Ann Carter and Steve Carter. You would know of her exquisite wooden handbags (they are breathtaking in beauty and function) and his bowls!! OMG his bowls! But did you know they do the most amazing lamps. How they get wood to bend like that is beyond me. Course I went home with a thick wooden bracelet which is everything!!
Last up was my beautiful friend, Lorna Wilson’s studio Lorna Wilson and guest artist, Yasmin Vizcarrando Yasmin Vizcarrondo. Words will never be able to fully express how much I love these two artists work as I am the proud owner of many pieces. It’s a must see studio all the time. Go see Lorna’s new flying fish on gold leaf. Wow!!
At the end of the long day, we were treated to delicious cookies and sat around the table to chat and solve all the worlds problems. I met, renowned author and lecturer, Margaret D. Kawamuinyo Gill who gifted us by reading a few of her poems from her new book, “Machinations of a Feminist”. Her way with words is art intself. She’s amazing. This table of 5 women showed me what love and support looks like.
We did leave tired (and happy) Lorna in the dead of night. Where laughter filled the space as Lorna declared, “smile and give me a clue”. You had to have been there. Blessed day.”

I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed.
What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting.
The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information.
Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun.
The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this.

“Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!
My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.
I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.
With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

Helping the young talent where we can.
This pandemic has created financial difficulties for so many in the arts and they lose any chance to make a career of art.
I just received a donation of art supplies being kindly given by artist Jeena Chatrani, curator of Antillean Gallery of Art online gallery. Thank you Jeena.
These will go to a very talented 17 year old to help her keep drawing and painting.
Would you consider looking around your painting/studio space and see if there are any art supplies that you may not want or need and help the future talents of Barbados.
Either give directly to artists whom you feel may need the help or contact me via private message here and drop off the arts supplies and I will happily disburse them to those in need.
Please be aware of the dignity and pride of those receiving.
Please don’t add their names here. Private message me.
Allow them to decide if they want their names added to art supplies being given to them.
Thank you
Corrie

Our Mission
To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries.
The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.
of the NCF are:
To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally
To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government
To organize cultural festivals
Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.
To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work
To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage
To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains
To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms
To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders
To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets
To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”
Dan Rather
