VISUAL ARTS EVENTS BARBADOS

Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/175529135827747 Instagram. @visualartsbarbadosevents Visualartsbarbadosevents The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas. The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies. I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page. I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on. I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts. Thank you for understanding. Corrie Scott

This Is My Island In The Sun... By fine art photographer Leslie St. John Full feature with images here https://moocat.net/art/barbados-photos Artist’s Statement Everyone thinks “Caribbean” and immediately pictures tropical colour—palm trees, beaches, a lounger by the pool with a bright drink and a tiny umbrella. That’s not my work. On an island just 166 square miles with more than a quarter-million people, it might be hard to believe there are still wild places. But they exist—coastlines too rough for swimming, roads where no cars pass, paths untouched by tourism or the churn of daily commerce. The parts of Barbados you’ll never find on a postcard saying, “Wish you were here!” Far from the pool. Far from the umbrella drink. My love for black-and-white photography goes back to high school, when we were left to figure out developing and printing on our own. Pre-internet, that meant stacks of library books and countless hours in the school darkroom learning by trial and (mostly) error. I was hooked from the moment I watched an image rise through the developer tray. I still think young photographers today miss out on that magic.” - Leslie St. John Leslie St. John has spent his entire life on Barbados. He first picked up a camera in high school and dedicated himself fully to photography in 2009. He lives with his wife, their two sons, and a lively household of four cats. ‘ OF .....BARBADOS’ An exhibition with Arthur Atkinson and Sir Henry Fraser. At Caribbean Brushstrokes Gallery, Pelican Village, Bridgetown. OPENING NIGHT Wednesday September 16th, 6.30pm MEET THE ARTISTS Saturday September 26th, 2pm-4pm Exhibition ends Friday October 9th “Caribbean Brushstrokes is proud to present “…Of Barbados” — The Art of Arthur Atkinson and Sir Henry Fraser, bringing together two distinguished Barbadian artists whose work has been deeply shaped by the island they call home. Arthur Atkinson has been exhibiting since 1968, moving boldly through representation, abstraction, super realism and stylised social commentary while consistently returning to Barbados and things Bajan for inspiration. With exhibitions across the Caribbean and internationally, he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award in the Visual Arts in 2008. Sir Henry Fraser brings an equally extraordinary perspective. Physician, author, architectural historian, broadcaster and artist, his expressive landscapes and studies of Barbados sit alongside a lifetime devoted to documenting and protecting the island’s heritage. A former President of the Barbados National Trust, he was knighted in 2014. Together, their work offers more than views of Barbados. It is Barbados observed, remembered, interpreted and preserved through two remarkable artistic lives.” - Caribbean Brushstrokes Gallery Opening Night: Wednesday, September 16 at 6:30pm Meet the Artists: Saturday, September 26 | 2–4pm Closing Date: Friday, October 9

ARTIST HIGHLIGHT | ARTHUR ATKINSON For more than half a century, Arthur Atkinson has looked to Barbados for inspiration. Exhibiting since 1968, Atkinson’s work has continually evolved—from representation to abstraction, super realism and later, a distinctive stylised approach rooted in Bajan folk characters and social commentary. Yet through every shift in style, one constant has remained: Barbados and things Bajan. Working primarily in acrylic and watercolour, Atkinson describes painting as a space of personal freedom—an opportunity to create, experiment and satisfy his own artistic curiosity. Across his remarkable career, he has mounted 12 solo exhibitions, partnered in five exhibitions and participated in more than 25 major national and international exhibitions, with his work shown across the Caribbean and as far afield as Cuba, Japan, London, Miami, Paris, São Paulo and Washington. In 2008, his contribution to Barbadian visual culture was recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award in the Visual Arts and a retrospective exhibition. This September, discover the work and enduring vision of Arthur Atkinson in “… Of Barbados”, alongside fellow Barbadian artist Henry Fraser, at Caribbean Brushstrokes.” Opening: Wednesday, September 16 | 6:30 PM Artists’ Talk: Saturday, September 26 | 2–4 PM Exhibition closes: October 9

“What makes an artist completely change the way he paints? For Arthur Atkinson, an unexpected encounter in a New York gallery brought his journey into abstraction to a sudden turning point. Back in Barbados, he painted a super-realistic portrait—and discovered that years of loose, expressive brushwork had given him a command of paint he hadn’t possessed before. Sometimes, an artist’s earlier experiments reveal their value in surprising ways. Arthur’s curiosity began much closer to home. Growing up on Carlisle Bay, with a father who built and repaired boats, he developed an affection for Barbados that deepened through their Sunday drives around the island. Later, Saturday morning paint-outs with Goldie Spieler opened his eyes to how free and fluid watercolour could be. That spirit of discovery continues through his explorations of photography, collage, acrylic and charcoal. His work invites us to look more closely at an island we may think we already know. What did he encounter in that New York gallery? And how have these experiences shaped the artist he is today? There’s more to hear from Arthur himself. Discover the work in “…Of Barbados”, then join Arthur Atkinson and Sir Henry Fraser for the stories and conversations behind it.”

ARTIST HIGHLIGHT | PROFESSOR EMERITUS SIR HENRY FRASER Few lives bridge art, medicine, history and public service as seamlessly as that of Sir Henry Fraser. A physician, educator, author, architectural historian, broadcaster and artist, Sir Henry’s contribution to Barbados has been both wide-ranging and deeply rooted in place. As a landscape expressionist, his work reflects a lifelong fascination with the island’s architecture, coastlines, historic spaces and natural beauty. Alongside an extraordinary academic and medical career, he has exhibited as an artist for decades, including a one-man show at London’s Langton Gallery in 1976, followed by exhibitions at Talma Mill, Pelican Gallery, Queen’s Park Gallery and Gallery of Caribbean Art. His parallel careers have continually met at one point: Barbados — its heritage, its stories, its landscape and its identity. This September, experience the work of Sir Henry Fraser alongside Arthur Atkinson in “… Of Barbados” at Caribbean Brushstrokes. Opening: Wednesday, September 16 | 6:30 PM Artists’ Talk: Saturday, September 26 | 2–4 PM Exhibition closes: October 9”

“It began with a coconut tree, drawn at four years old. A lifetime later, Sir Henry Fraser is still answering the urge to paint. Between the demands of medicine and science, art has remained a constant: a way to capture the places he loves and the feelings they awaken. In Mammee River, Jamaica, watercolour evokes the cool hush of a gentle river in a shady valley. In Eastmont House, expressive washes give way to intricate penwork, recording architectural details worth pausing over. Look closely: there’s a barrel-vaulted hurricane shelter on the left! One invites you to feel a place. The other invites you to discover its stories. Both reveal an artist whose love of nature and buildings runs deep. This week, discover his world in “…Of Barbados”, featuring Sir Henry Fraser and Arthur Atkinson. Join us for the opening at Caribbean Brushstrokes, Wednesday, September 16, at 6:30 pm. Come for the paintings. Stay for the details.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Good evening, everyone, and once again welcome to this much anticipated event. Arthur Atkinson and Sir Henry Fraser. On the face of it you have a lot in common. Both of you were born in the final years of WW2, you have both made substantial contributions to the Caribbean nation-building project, you also belong to that rather infamous species known as ‘older white males’, but, in that regard, we will immediately note that by entering into the arts, you have actually been pattern-breakers rather than conformists! You both enjoy about as high a degree of name-recognition as artists and academics will ever attain in Barbados. For many decades, your names have appeared not only in the print media, but quite regularly in casual conversations such as one might overhear on social occasion. Arthur’s first and foremost in the context of painting and tropical bonsai gardening, on which he is a highly esteemed expert, but – a little further back - also in relation to graphic design, perhaps never more lovingly executed than for the promotion of the Barbados Dance Theater of which his wife Hetty, of course, was a founding member. Nowadays Arthur’s name is also invoked – as recently as at an artists’ talk last week – as the inspirational and supportive father of another renowned Barbadian artist, his son Ewan. Sir Henry ‘s name has appeared in even wider contexts due to his many offices and capacities – including those of scholar, senator, writer, columnist, historian, orator, advocate for our architectural heritage, and, of course, his contribution to the visual arts. In 2014, he was indeed knighted for his “outstanding contribution to the medical profession and representation of Barbadian culture.”

It is, in other words, plainly evident – as if we needed any reminders - that you have both been gifted with an exceptional diversity of talent. So, what I have been thinking about for this occasion are essentially three questions. 1) How – beyond your individual practices - have you contributed to the development of art in Barbados? 2) Where do you most surprise the viewer? 3) And (since we have already noted some of the things you have in common) in what ways do the two of you differ most? Let me begin with the last of these questions: where do you differ from one another as artists? From Sir Henry – well, apart from his delightful, in fact devoted, and competent illustrations of architectural landmarks, we have come to expect delicate watercolors which, with a lightness of touch that seems almost effortless, capture a kind of atmospheric texture, usually above coastlines, as well as glimpses of breaking waves, or verdant fields - in ways that at once register as impressionistic, and yet also have a timelessness and meditative character that transcends the local and momentary. I think of these watercolors as haiku poems about the Barbadian landscape. From Arthur, we likewise expect Barbadiana – but a wider range of it, not only landscapes, flowers and seascapes, but also people, objects, and buildings. More importantly, perhaps, we have also come to expect these things portrayed in astonishingly different ways – including stylized evocations of Barbadian folklore, photo-based collage works, and hyper-realist still-life paintings. But Arthur’s most popular genre consists of quintessentially Barbadian scenery rendered in a national-romanticist vein – and here I’d like to quip that no location on the Barbadian map is perceived as quintessentially Barbadian UNTIL it has been painted by Arthur ! So, we can perhaps agree that whereas Arthur’s approach to Barbadiana is extremely varied, Sir Henry’s has been remarkably steady

So how and where do these two ‘branded’ artists manage to surprise us? Well, I think there is a subtle, but interesting paradox embedded in Sir Henry’s equal commitment to heritage and preservation on the one hand and his artistic inclination towards the fleeting and atmospheric on the other – his oeuvre, in other words, at once displays a deep fascination with the changing and transient, and a yearning for continuity and holding on to something that seems in the process of disappearing. As for Arthur – well, where does the artist of perpetual surprises, surprise? For me, this happens when, very rarely, he gives himself license to present us with something that may seem a little less, shall we say ‘conclusive’, than his work tends to be. Mind you, only a couple of works in this exhibition exemplify this, because Arthur is, I think, an artist who likes to answer the questions his artwork poses rather firmly. And this leads me to my third question, which looks beyond your practices and towards your broader legacies in relation to the development of art in Barbados. Needless to say, this cannot be captured in just a few words, so I will highlight just one thing for each of you – things which might not be part of any official citation, and which may not even matter as much to you, as I think they should to us, both as citizens and as human beings. Sir Henry, you are often and rightly referred to as a renaissance man, which is to say not only a practitioner, but a master in many different areas. But I would like to suggest that this designation is true in a deeper sense that many people realize. Because the renaissance would not have been the renaissance if it hadn’t been for its unusual convergence between science and the arts. And whereas the old left brain/right brain myth would have us believe that artists are creative and scientists are rational and that’s that, you have - from the very beginning of your professional life - shown us how both of these qualities can live in one body, and feed off one another. You may even agree with me that great scientists and great artists have more in common with each other than they have with less accomplished artists and ‘run-of-the mill scientists’!

And Arthur. Well, you may have no recollection of this, but among my fondest memories of the Zemicon era, are your visits to other artists’ exhibitions. Because, for me, those were exercises in learning to see. Like few others, you understood ‘visual logic’ in a very profound way (there it is again - art does have its own innate forms of reasoning). And one might say that your entire practice, across its stylistic and thematic range, has been underpinned by an ironclad determination to master many visual languages and grasp their internal logic. Throughout this pursuit, you have continued to evolve and in the process shown us all that not only is there always more to see, there are many more ways in which to see. Thank you to you both for your immeasurable service to the Barbadian arts community and society at large. - Dr Therese Hadchity

Before moving to Barbados in 1990, Therese Hadchity studied art history and contemporary culture at the University of Copenhagen. She owned the Zemicon Gallery in Bridgetown from 2000-2010, while also working as a curator, art critic and lecturer. Upon closing the gallery, she returned to academia to examine political and conceptual shifts in Caribbean art and criticism in recent decades.

The Visual Arts Center and Department of Art and Art History, Austin, USA “The Visual Arts Center and Department of Art and Art History welcome artist Taisha Carrington as the 2026-27 St. Elmo Arts Residency Fellow. A committee of VAC staff and Art and Art History faculty selected Carrington's exceptional application from a pool of over 120 competitive submissions by recent MFA graduates from across the country. - VAC "I am interested in naturally occurring systems in our environment and the materials they carry, such as dust transported through atmospheric movement and dissolved minerals in seawater. These systems register growth, migration, and transformation over time and provide a framework through which I explore the movement of people. My most recent work prioritizes the sounds produced by some of these materials, where the affective qualities of sound become common ground for viewers. In Austin, I want to continue working with sound and site-specific materialsparticularly atmospheric particles-as a means of thinking through urban development." - Taisha Carrington Photo: @patgarciajr_

The Consulate General of Barbados and Diaspora Now present, “Celebrating Barbados 60th Anniversary of Independence and 5 Years of the Republic” The Diamond Jubilee Exhibition September 17 – December 4, 2026 At the Permanent Mission of Barbados to the United Nations, 820 Second Avenue, 9th Floor, New York, NY 10017 OPENING RECEPTION, Friday, October 2nd, 6 – 8.30 pm – Meet the Artists & Curator Featuring artworks by Carlton Murrell, Christopher Cumberbatch, John Alleyne, Lisame, Patricia Stuart and Ras Ilix Heartman A Note from the Curator – Anderson M. Pilgrim “Barbados’ evolution from a colonial society, categorized as “Little England” to an Independent Nation and subsequently a Republic, admired internationally for its political stability and standard of living, has been nothing short of remarkable. Over the years, this Caribbean island nation has become a leading advocate of economic and climate justice for small states on the world stage. The country’s leadership has articulated the case for reparatory justice morally and legally due to former European colonies, as well as relief from the economic havoc created by climate change on small states which have contributed only a tiny percentage to their cumulative causes. Similarly, during this 60-year journey, Barbados continues to produce superlative achievers in almost every field of economic and professional endeavor, sport, music and the creative arts. National Heroes Rihanna and the late Sr. Garfield Sobers being two (2) of the more prominent names on that distinguished list. As we celebrate this Diamond Jubilee of Independence and the establishment of our Republic, in my biased opinion, the visual art segment of the creative arts is most uniquely equipped to document the evolution of our island nation as we continue to write our names on history’s page. We are pleased to present the work of six (6) “sons and daughters of the soil” to reflect the spirit and reality of our nation’s history. Barbados celebrates its Independence Day and Republic Day on November 30. The exhibition is on view weekdays until December 4, 2026.” Contact: Anderson M. ARTS DIRECTORY BARBADOS

How It Happened I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed. What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting. The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information. Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun. The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this. Jeena Chatrani Antilles Gallery. https://m.facebook.com/AntilleanGalleryofArt/ “Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art! My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online. I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling. With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.” -Jeena Chatrani

Helping the young talent where we can. This pandemic has created financial difficulties for so many in the arts and they lose any chance to make a career of art. I just received a donation of art supplies being kindly given by artist Jeena Chatrani, curator of Antillean Gallery of Art online gallery. Thank you Jeena. These will go to a very talented 17 year old to help her keep drawing and painting. Would you consider looking around your painting/studio space and see if there are any art supplies that you may not want or need and help the future talents of Barbados. Either give directly to artists whom you feel may need the help or contact me via private message here and drop off the arts supplies and I will happily disburse them to those in need. Please be aware of the dignity and pride of those receiving. Please don’t add their names here. Private message me. Allow them to decide if they want their names added to art supplies being given to them. Thank you Corrie

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.” Dan Rather
