VISUAL ARTS EVENTS BARBADOS

Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/175529135827747 Instagram. @visualartsbarbadosevents Visualartsbarbadosevents The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas. The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies. I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page. I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on. I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts. Thank you for understanding. Corrie Scott

‘Caribbean Atlantean’ Solo exhibition by Barbadian artist Risée Chaderton-Charles now on at the the Barbados Museum & Historical Society. October 29, 2026 – April 25, 2027 General museum admission applies

“NOW OPEN! Come on down to the Barbados Museum & Historical Society and experience Caribbean Atlantean, a solo exhibition by Barbadian artist Risée Chaderton-Charles. What if those who were cast into the sea did not disappear? Caribbean Atlantean invites audiences to reconsider Barbados’ history, identity and the stories we carry into the future. Drawing from research into Barbados’ colonial archives, Risée Chaderton-Charles transforms one of the Atlantic world's greatest sites of historical trauma into a place of survival, memory, and possibility. Shipping records, plantation ledgers, insurance claims, and newspapers, documents that once reduced African lives to property, are reclaimed within luminous underwater worlds inhabited by Black Caribbean merpeople, mothers, children, guardians, and ancestral beings. Rather than accepting these archives as the final account of history, Chaderton-Charles asks a powerful question: What if those who were cast into the sea did not disappear? In this imagined Atlantic world, histories of trauma are reimagined through survival, memory and possibility. The exhibition asks us to look beyond the archives as the final account of the past and consider the power of imagination in shaping the stories we tell about ourselves. As Barbados reflects on 60 years of Independence and five years as a Republic, Caribbean Atlantean offers a hopeful vision of Caribbean identity, rooted in resilience, imagination and the freedom to create new stories. There's more beneath the surface. Swipe and scan the QR code to explore the exhibition catalogue. Come explore Caribbean Atlantean and encounter a different vision of the Caribbean beneath the surface.” - Barbados Museum & Historical Society

(L-R) Curator Natalie McGuire Artist Risee Chaderton-Charles

“Thanks to everyone who joined to celebrate the opening of Risée ChadertonCharles’s (Risée Chaderton-Charles) Caribbean Atlantean! It was great being on this project team to realize the vision for Risée’s beautifully haunting body of work! Caribbean Atlantean reminds us that decolonisation remains an unfinished process. Constitutions may change within a single generation, but the work of imagining freedom continues across many more. Beneath the surface of the Atlantic, Chaderton-Charles invites us to imagine that another Barbados has always existed, one sustained by creativity rather than conquest, and by the enduring belief that freedom is not only won through political struggle, but continually renewed through the stories a people choose to tell about themselves.” - Natalie McGuire. Curator On at the Barbados Museum & Historical Society until April 24th 2027 Slides 1-2 by Arielle Shepherd and courtesy of the Barbados Museum & Historical Society S

JOSCELYN GARDNER

Barbados-born visual artist, Joscelyn Gardner moved to Canada in 2000 after nearly fifteen years as a visual artist, gallerist, and teacher in Barbados Following Master of Fine Arts studies at Western University, Ontario, from 2001-2003, she worked as a Professor of Fine Art at Fanshawe College until retiring in 2024 to focus on her full-time studio practice. Her Barbadian heritage continues to inform her work as a Canadian artist. Currently, she works in printmaking (stone lithography) and multimedia installation (video, film, and sound). For over twenty-five years, she has been exploring colonial archives from a postcolonial feminist perspective to uncover hidden female voices and challenge documented histories, particularly as they relate to plantation history in the Anglo-Caribbean. As a (white) Creole woman, she strives to understand her identity as an “implicated subject” in this traumatic past, while helping to heal historical wounds.while helping to heal historical wounds. Her investigations also reflect a personal journey of reckoning and reconciliation with colonial legacies and diasporic identities. Gardner has held solo exhibitions in Canada, the Caribbean, the USA, and Spain, and participated in numerous international biennials and curated group shows in museums across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean. Public collections that hold her work include Yale Center for British Art, Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Puerto Rico, Tropenmuseum (Amsterdam), KADIST (Paris), Fitzwilliam Museum (Cambridge, UK), and the Barbados National Collection. Awards include the Grand Prize at the 7th International Contemporary Printmaking Biennial in Trois Rivières, Quebec. In 2014, she founded Print London, a professional printmakers’ collective that has hosted the biennial Ontario Miniature Print Exhibition (TOMPE) since 2016.

BOB KISS “Sometimes a thing OF BEAUTY is sitting there at the side of the road, apparently part of the architectural landscape, hiding in plain sight. We chose this photo, titled STORMY SKY, to appear on the cover of our 2011 book, BARBADOS CHATTEL HOUSES, partly because of the interesting house but also because of the dramatic light created by the threatening clouds and strong, low angle, morning sunlight. All but two of the chattels were photographed in 8X10 and most were printed in platinum-palladium, either from the camera original negatives or from digitally enlarged negatives which I produced by scanning the original negs, enlarging in Frotoshop, and printing with my digital inkjet printer.” Bob Kiss

Meet Fresh Milk’s TENDER 2025 Grantee in our Barbadian Art Organisation category; Punch Creative Arena. “Punch Creative Arena is a curatorial initiative based in Barbados that aims to showcase and interrogate creative production with a multi-disciplinary focus on local, regional and international art practices. Punch generates projects that focus on collaborative work, research and artistic production, in an effort to encourage art making and discourse while building community awareness and involvement. Punch was started in 2013 by Allison Thompson and Ewan Atkinson. We are both independent cultural practitioners with many years working in art education. Perceiving a lack of a supportive infrastructure for artistic practice in Barbados, we wanted to initiate and develop our own collaborative projects as producers. Within the parameters of education, we wanted to address the gap between ideas generated in the classroom and the ‘real world’ . We have in the past worked with exhibiting artists to provide critical feedback during production and the conceptualisation of the exhibition, we install and promote the exhibition, and in 2015 we started producing digital catalogues with critical essays. We are now transitioning our practice to focus on research led, transdisciplinary and collaborative projects.” -

The Consulate General of Barbados and Diaspora Now present, “Celebrating Barbados 60th Anniversary of Independence and 5 Years of the Republic” The Diamond Jubilee Exhibition September 17 – December 4, 2026 At the Permanent Mission of Barbados to the United Nations, 820 Second Avenue, 9th Floor, New York, NY 10017 OPENING RECEPTION, Friday, October 2nd, 6 – 8.30 pm – Meet the Artists & Curator Featuring artworks by Carlton Murrell, Christopher Cumberbatch, John Alleyne, Lisame, Patricia Stuart and Ras Ilix Heartman A Note from the Curator – Anderson M. Pilgrim “Barbados’ evolution from a colonial society, categorized as “Little England” to an Independent Nation and subsequently a Republic, admired internationally for its political stability and standard of living, has been nothing short of remarkable. Over the years, this Caribbean island nation has become a leading advocate of economic and climate justice for small states on the world stage. The country’s leadership has articulated the case for reparatory justice morally and legally due to former European colonies, as well as relief from the economic havoc created by climate change on small states which have contributed only a tiny percentage to their cumulative causes. Similarly, during this 60-year journey, Barbados continues to produce superlative achievers in almost every field of economic and professional endeavor, sport, music and the creative arts. National Heroes Rihanna and the late Sr. Garfield Sobers being two (2) of the more prominent names on that distinguished list. As we celebrate this Diamond Jubilee of Independence and the establishment of our Republic, in my biased opinion, the visual art segment of the creative arts is most uniquely equipped to document the evolution of our island nation as we continue to write our names on history’s page. We are pleased to present the work of six (6) “sons and daughters of the soil” to reflect the spirit and reality of our nation’s history. Barbados celebrates its Independence Day and Republic Day on November 30. The exhibition is on view weekdays until December 4, 2026.” Contact: Anderson M. ARTS DIRECTORY BARBADOS

How It Happened I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed. What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting. The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information. Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun. The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this. Corrie Dec 7th 2011

Jeena Chatrani Antilles Gallery. https://m.facebook.com/AntilleanGalleryofArt/ “Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art! My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online. I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling. With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.” -Jeena Chatrani

Helping the young talent where we can. This pandemic has created financial difficulties for so many in the arts and they lose any chance to make a career of art. I just received a donation of art supplies being kindly given by artist Jeena Chatrani, curator of Antillean Gallery of Art online gallery. Thank you Jeena. These will go to a very talented 17 year old to help her keep drawing and painting. Would you consider looking around your painting/studio space and see if there are any art supplies that you may not want or need and help the future talents of Barbados. Either give directly to artists whom you feel may need the help or contact me via private message here and drop off the arts supplies and I will happily disburse them to those in need. Please be aware of the dignity and pride of those receiving. Please don’t add their names here. Private message me. Allow them to decide if they want their names added to art supplies being given to them. Thank you Corrie

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.” Dan Rather
