These funding opportunities will increase the visibility of over 1,000 Caribbean-based artists, creatives and cultural practitioners to global audiences, provide much needed financial support, and develop the creative skills of our artists. Now more than ever in light of COVID19, it is critical to think about artists having an online presence, valuing the work of Caribbean artists, and enabling their growth. CATAPULT will target participants living and working across the Dutch, English, French, and Spanish regions. This four-month comprehensive arts programme includes online events, art writing and journalism sessions, technical training, residencies and virtual discursive salons. CATAPULT is particularly interested in working with practitioners who are exploring the broad critical themes of Culture, Human Rights, Gender, LGBTQIA+, and Climate Justice from Caribbean perspectives and especially welcomes applications from those who do not have permanent employment at this time. CATAPULT will increase the capacity of Caribbean-based artists to navigate the digital space and learn new ways to connect with diverse global audiences. It will also promote the visibility of selected cultural practitioners by expanding online content from the region, enabling the region’s artists to engage wider audiences while contributing to the potential of earning beyond their borders. The collaboration will support the following projects:(i) Caribbean Artist Showcase, (ii) Caribbean Creative Online, (iii) Digital Creative Training, (iv) Consultancy Vouchers, (v) Lockdown Virtual Salon and (vi) Stay Home Artist Residency.

Artists donate art through an initiative by Hazel-Ann Mahy-Batson, Director of the Gallery of Caribbean Art, Barbados. By: Regina Selman Moore The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is seeking to create a more patient friendly, therapeutic environment of care and the Gallery of Caribbean Art is aiding the health care institution, in its quest to do so. Just yesterday, Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland, Executive Chairman of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), accepted a donation of about 70 pieces of art from Hazel-Ann Mahy-Batson, Director of the Gallery of Caribbean Art. BynoeSutherland noted that these pieces, just like the 20 or so pieces previously donated from the Gallery, will be used not only at the QEH, but also at the island’s Harrison Point Isolation Centre. “I want to really thank the Gallery of Caribbean Art for your initiative. I want to say to you, that these paintings are not just at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, they are also at Harrison’s Point in our isolation centres and we have gotten wonderful feedback from those centres, so we are really utilising them in spaces throughout the hospital, to really beautify and basically create a therapeutic space,” Bynoe-Sutherland remarked, during the presentation ceremony held in the QEH’s boardroom. “Part of our strategic intention is to transform the hospital, not just transform the patient experience by the traditional areas you hear about, but transform it from the inside out, by how we beautify it, how we create environments that are therapeutic for people to heal, how we create settings that staff can take a moment from their very hectic, stressful schedules to appreciate art,” she said. “One may not recognise the importance of art, but we can tell you, we that appreciate art, art is important and has been scientifically proven to bring benefits to people in a health care setting,” she stressed, noting that both staff and patients can reflect on the art and thereby take a mental break and find the solace they may need for a few moments. Lisa Greenidge of the Bed Management Unit, whose idea it was to bring the art to the wards at the QEH, noted that art pieces have already been placed in some of the private wards at the QEH and all 40 wards will eventually be covered. Hazel-Ann Mahy-Batson, Director of the Gallery of Caribbean Art meanwhile placed the value of the pieces donated yesterday at around $28 000, whilst she noted that the pieces donated prior stand at a value of around $10 000. Moved by Greenidge’s request for art pieces to place in the QEH, Mahy-Batson noted that the artists affiliated with the Gallery were more than willing to contribute and made it all positive for the initiative to be successful.

ART - Nation News by Gercine Carter "Artistic Farewell to Argentine Ambassador to Barbados Gustavo Pandiani“ “Last Thursday Argentine Ambassador to Barbados, Gustavo Martinez Pandiani, opened the doors of the Embassy once last time to the local art community for them to exhibit and sell their work at a farewell cocktail reception in his honour at the Embassy in Hastings, Christ Church. In the presence of an audience of diplomats, friends and associates, Pandiani was showered with praises and gifts of recognition for all of his work and contribution to the arts. Curator Oneka Small of the Artist Alliance Barbados (AAB), expressed her heartfelt thanks stating “Ambassador’s interest in the local art has resulted in over 15 shows being held here at the Embassy, bringing together over 75 artists and people from many walks of life”.
Among the gifted pieces were Oneka Small’s painting labelled The Shaking of Hands, while artist Jeena Chatrani presented a painting of a polo horse with a Barbados background, which was specially commissioned by Linda and Theodore Williams in appreciation of all Pandiani had done for Barbados and for artists here. Juliana Inniss’hand-built ceramic piece representing Barbadian heritage was the Alliance’s parting gift to the Ambassador. ‘Barbados Bu'n-Bu’n’ and ‘Nyam Jamaica’ Available in BARBADOS, UK and USA “Stanford's is a wonderful historic bookshop in London. The ONLY one that was brave enough to stock my entire leftover shipment of Barbados Bu'n-Bu'n. Not only that but also organized to collect them from where they were stored. There is so much gratitude on my part. All the Nyam Jamaica and Barbados Bu'n-Bu'n that were also stored in the US are ALL now stocked at their sister bookshop in Ft Lauderdale, Bluewaters Books & Charts...again fully and gratefully organized by them. The world might want to believe that ebooks are cool. But there is nothing cooler and more wonderful than holding a book and feeling the written word as you move through its pages. These bookstores carry a bevy of other books that authors like myself have thru blood, sweat and tears produced. Please help as much as you can as described below. Believe books can also be shipped if u cannot get to the bookstore. BE SMART, READ A BOOK. IT LOVES YOU BACK.” Rosemary Parkinson

The studio tours scheduled for February and March 2021 will now be November 13/14th and December 11/12th, 2021 “The world news regarding Covid-19 is unsettling to say the least and it does not look as though the virus will loosen its grip soon. Although Barbados has been spared so far, there is great uncertainty in the artist community and elsewhere. So it is with much regret that we have decided to postpone the studio tours scheduled for February and March 2021. Instead, we are planning to host the tours a little later in the year —November 13/14 and December 11/12, 2021— in the hope that we can host the tours in a safe and responsible manner. We will, however, continue to introduce you to the fine art and artisans of this island who have already been accepted to the 2021 Artists Studio Tour...after all, artists create all year round and need your support! So watch this space!“ -Artists Studio Tours

NEW HOME FOR BARBADOS NATIONAL ART GALLERY The Barbados National Art Gallery (BNAG) now has a place to call home. This announcement came from Minister with responsibility for Culture, John King, who revealed that after consultation with the BNAG, Cabinet agreed that Block ‘A’, The Garrison, would be reallocated to the Ministry as the permanent home for the gallery. A section of the Old Town Hall Building in Cheapside, Bridgetown, will also be made available for additional exhibition space due to its ease of access to pedestrian traffic. Minister King also indicated that a paper would be submitted to Cabinet detailing a proposal for a public/private partnership to undertake the major repairs and renovations, as well as the out-fitting of both buildings. The public, particularly the artistic community, has long advocated for a national gallery. Successive committees and boards of the BNAG have been working with Government, particularly since 2007, when the Barbados National Art Gallery Act was proclaimed, to make this a reality. Last Friday, members of the Board of the BNAG were on hand to witness the handover of the keys to Block ‘A’, The Garrison, by the Ministry of Housing, Lands and Rural Development to Minister King. During this visit, it was noted that Block ‘A’ was in generally good condition, but transformation of the property, into a world class gallery space, would require significant investment to upgrade the building. The Ministry will be working closely with the National Art Gallery to bring this project to fruition, in the shortest possible time. paula.harper-grant@barbados.gov.bb https://gisbarbados.gov.bb/blog/new-home-for-barbados-art-gallery/

Therese Hadchity on the publication of The Making of a Caribbean Avant-Garde: Postmodernism as Post-nationalism. “We talked to Therese Hadchity , the author of The Making of a Caribbean Avant-Garde: Postmodernism as Post-nationalism. Focusing on the Anglophone Caribbean, The Making of a Caribbean Avant-Garde describes the rise and gradual consolidation of the visual arts avant-garde, which came to local and international attention in the 1990s. The book is centered on the critical and aesthetic strategies employed by this avant-garde to repudiate the previous generation’s commitment to modernism and anti-colonialism.“ -Purdue University http://blogs.lib.purdue.edu/news/2020/08/10/the-m aking-of-a-caribbean-avant-garde-qa-with-theresekaspersen-hadchity/

Gecko Getaway by Sue Trew When author and illustrator Sue Trew was asked by Carla Daniel from the University of the West Indies (best known for her work with turtles) and Isabel Vique from Fauna & Flora International to produce her next book about the Barbados leaf-toed gecko, she readily volunteered. With her Turtle Tracks Family series of books designed to inspire young environmentalists, Sue was enthusiastic to be part of a campaign - also involving the Ministry of Environment and National Beautification - to increase awareness of the island’s endemic gecko. In her studio at home, she worked on the project during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Sue enjoyed weaving facts about the gecko and about its plight, into a story, creating nocturnal illustrations and designing a plush toy of Gink, the story’s main character. The complete series can be found in her family’s Best of Barbados Gift Shops which she runs with her husband, Chris. Their airport location is already open, on-line shopping with local pick-up is available and their south and west coast locations will be open towards the end of October. www.best-of-barbados.com

The 2020 Studio Art Barbados Fine Arts Portfolio exhibition from Barbados Community College is online! https://studioartbfa.wixsite.com/antidote No exhibition this year, but that didnt stop us... Antidote, the 2020 Studio Art BFA Portfolio exhibition. Online now! Meet the latest group of BCC Studio Art final year students, see their work, learn more about the programme and our dedicated faculty. When the world gives you lemons... The Studio Art BFA programme culminates with a Portfolio exit review. The final year students present a cohesive body of work to their advisors and a guest external examiner. This assessment comes after a series of Advanced Studio courses in which they develop both technical and theoretical aspects of their practice. Finally, a curated exhibition of their best work is unveiled in the Morningside Gallery at the Barbados Community College. The global pandemic gave us an entirely new set of challenges. The programme was thrown into turmoil, but we adapted. The students and faculty found ways to continue. Separated from the studios, the students produced, installed and documented work in their own homes. Though far from ideal, courses went online and the final review was re-conceived as a series of video conferences. After all of this, it is with great pleasure that we present the 2020 Portfolio exhibition, reimagined online. As always, it is a curated selection of what the students have produced. We hope that Antidote will offer some needed relief from all that ails in this moment. But true relief does not come as a candy-coated sugar pill, this is not escapism. This antidote is about interrogation and reflection. If we seek change we must learn to look at ourselves, at how we encounter, construct and navigate our lives. Yes, some of the work has been inspired by recent events, but the thematic concerns were established long before. It is no surprise that the work feels particularly prescient, issues do not suddenly appear out of thin air.... those that look, see. -Ewan Atkinson

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit. Dan Rather
