KHARY DARBY One senses that the history of the world after the optimism of modernity, has given birth to an almost universal atmosphere of uncertainty and psychic exposure. This decomposition of hitherto self-confident modes of thinking and self-making, presents a clearing for me- this is a fissure in consciousness, a place where images can emerge. And so it seems natural that my work continues to be concerned with cycles of vulnerability and aggression; dissolution and reconstruction; creation and obliteration. For my purposes, painting and drawing act as parts of a continuum of image-making strategies. It follows that grappling with problems of the materiality of paint, issues of scale, the dilemmas of subject and method- remain central to the sought after fusion of form and content. Of course, this presupposes that such “fusion” is even required, possible or demonstrable. Ideally, the difficulty and resistance of the process (drawing, painting, erasure, scoring, sanding, repainting and so on) would remain on the surface of the painting as evidence of an interminable search. The work always begins with a compound and assembly of images- these could be drawings, photographs, printed material or an analysis of film or video. The painted or drawn transformation is inevitably a process of making and unmasking, confirmation and contamination. The relative unpredictability of paint- is often set against my desire to be specific or descriptive. I tell myself that this tension is a reflection of inner processes- psychological imperatives embodied in paint. But of course, matters are rarely as straightforward as this. I accept that painting has its histories- the western tradition is but one among them. I have chosen to identify with it because it encompasses so many great works that continue to baffle and excite me. In our time, the image is a weightless, ubiquitous, super-fast commodity- attributes that may at first seem antithetical to painting. Of course, I want to underline that my activities with paint could never exist without images. As such, the influence of images is a fundamental part of the fabric of experiences that define our contemporary consciousness. Ultimately the image must be subsumed in a painterly vocabulary. And yet one can never fully anticipate how the translation of reference into paint activates a work's final psychological or emotional resonance. I want to argue for painting as a means of elaborating an alternative “real”. A real constructed to reflect a more fundamental and mysterious brand of truthfulness- a subjective truth. ARTS DIRECTORY BARBADOS How It Happened I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed. What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting. The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information. Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun. The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Fresh Milk is very pleased to announce Barbadian artist Simone Asia as the winner of the Fresh Milk ‘My Time’ Local Residency prize for 2015. Simone’s one-month residency runs from Monday April 13 – Friday May 8, 2015. She sees this period as a “playground for opportunities,” a chance to experiment with surface, scale and technique. She will explore and respond organically to the environment at Fresh Milk to feed the current series of work she has been producing, which is inspired by dreams and reinterpretations of personal experiences. Fresh Milk is excited to welcome our fifth set of residents for 2015, Australian inter ‐disciplinary artists of Caribbean extraction, Willoh S. Weiland of Aphids and Halcyon Macloed of My Darling Patricia. They will be with us between April 20 – May 23, 2015 working on their collaborative project ‘Crawl Me Blood’, a sound installation inspired by the works of Dominican writer Jean Rhys and her masterpiece Wide Sargasso Sea. As part of their research, Willoh and Halcyon are inviting members of the public to meet with them, to talk with a variety of women about different perceptions and interpretations of 'paradise'. Willoh S. Weiland and Halcyon Macloed are two artists from Australia who are currently in-residency at the Fresh Milk Platform. During their stay, they are writing and creating a performance and sound work called Crawl Me Blood. As part of their research for the project, they will be conducting a series of interviews with a number of women in Australia and in the Caribbean. Crawl Me Blood is inspired by the work of Dominican author Jean Rhys, especially her famous book Wide Sargasso Sea, the artists’ own family histories in the Caribbean Region and a feminist reading of the biblical story of Eden. They are starting their research by focusing on the idea of ‘paradise’; what causes us to long for particular landscapes and how women imagine paradise through creating or visiting gardens, cooking and eating delicious food. They are especially interested in the way food connects us to memories of people and places. The artists are inviting members of the public to meet with them and talk about these ideas. An audio recording of these conversations will be made. Interviews can be anonymous. Interviewees will be paid a modest stipend. The artists will be in residence from April 20th and open to arranging meetings on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 10am and 5pm. The artists would like to engage in dialogue with a variety of women, including: Academic/Writer , Radio host , Performer/ Actor/ Artist , Older woman (60 +) , Middle aged woman (40+) , Younger woman (in her 20s) If you are interested in participating in this project, please email willoh@aphids.net and halcyonmacleod@gmail.com.

Fresh Milk and Adopt-a-Stop have entered into a collaborative partnership to bring art into the public space. Fresh Milk has commissioned six young Barbadian artists to produce original art work for benches which will pop up in public spaces around the island between September 2014 and February 2015. In an effort to cultivate discussions about the arts starting at a young age while engaging with the community, Fresh Milk will implement an outreach programme using the resources available in The Colleen Lewis Reading Room (CLRR). One of the many challenges faced by young creatives is, despite their artistic gifts, they often struggle when it comes to speaking and writing comprehensively about their work. This is a skill that would benefit immensely from reading, whether specifically arts oriented texts or even well written fiction; gaining an appreciation for articulate material is imperative to mastering one’s own practice. Fresh Milk proposes to be the go-to point for refining these skills, beginning at CSEC level when children are expected to take their research and written abilities to a higher standard, all the way up to providing MA or PhD candidates with a deep pool of knowledge and unique material which they can draw upon. The Fresh Milk team will work with secondary school teachers in this area to construct a programme which will bring the students to Fresh Milk to show them the studio and reading room, letting them know that there is an environment available which can cater to their academic and creative needs. MISSION The Mission of the League of Extraordinary Poets (LXP) is threefold; 1. To nurture those involved in the arts, with a special emphasis on poets and spoken word artists; 2. To edutain the public through exposure to our art, and 3. To use the voices of the artists to bring awareness to, and to actively work towards addressing issues of importance in our society. VISION The LXP was founded on the principle that no art form exists in a vacuum. It is inexplicably tied to society, culture and time in which it is created, and that artists can improve their skills, and inspire one another when they operate in a close knit community of other like-minded artists, committed to positive feedback and professionalism in pursuing their art to its highest and best potential. The LXP sees spoken word and other forms of poetry and lyrical commentary as art forms which are not only able to express the personal vision, emotions and stories of the individual artist, but also as vehicles to speak to social issues not addressed in other forums and to educate the public in the hopes of bringing positive change to the society in which we live.

Our Mission To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries. The Role of the NCF The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions. FUNCTIONS of the NCF are: To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government To organize cultural festivals Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.
