Friday Feb 24th, Heroes Square, Bridgetown, Barbados
The NAG, a protest piece by artist Heather-Dawn Scott was installed on the plinth in Heroes Square in front of the Parliament of Barbados.
The ‘NAG’ is on the plinth. With banners “THE ART IS OURS”.
The NAG depicts our NAG (National Art Gallery) in dire straits. Still not open. We need our art collection to be in the public eye and not in continuous storage.
Help the NAG get in its feet.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS.
“Royal Caribbean International is excited to announce its first-ever call to local Caribbean artists to create art installations on our new ship, Icon of the Seas. The Royal Caribbean Artist Discovery Program spotlights up-and- coming local artists from your region, to showcase their creativity, talent and culture to the millions of guests that sail with the cruise line each year.
The program's purpose is to infuse every region's spirit and culture into the curated art collections on board ships, to highlight and celebrate the very destinations and their people at the heart of Royal Caribbean's memorable vacations.
Three artists will be selected to come aboard and create a large-scale mural in one of three marquee locations onboard Icon of the Seas, before the ship sets sail in the Caribbean beginning January 2024. Every artist will receive a grant from the cruise line, ranging from $20,000 to more than $100,000, to see their vision through.
The winners will work closely with the Newbuilding team behind Royal Caribbean's renowned ships to bring their concepts to life in Turku, Finland, where Icon is under construction.”

NCF exhibition ‘A Seat At The Table’ in honour of women at Queen’s Park Gallery. Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm. Exhibition ends April 8th, 2023.
“There is a visual arts exhibition in Queen’s Park Gallery which is dedicated to women, thanks to the National Cultural Foundation.”
In celebration of International Women’s Day, an exhibition of inspiring artists who interrogated and explored females in their subject matter, was mounted on Wednesday, March 8, 2023. The exhibition entitled ‘A Seat at the Table’ features a diverse collection of art from artists of all backgrounds.
The display focuses a variety of mediums, including painting, sculpture, and photography. Each piece is a unique expression of the artist’s experience and vision, showcasing the diverse perspectives of women in our community. One artist is also exposing viewers to augmented reality through his work. The exhibition aims to explore the formative role that women play in crafting a better society. The event will be an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversation and reflection, and to celebrate the contributions of women to the world of art.
NCF’s Curator Oneka Small indicated that “the NCF was thrilled to be able to showcase the work of so many talented artists in honour of International Women's Day.” She further stated: “Art has always been a powerful tool for expression and advocacy, and we hope this exhibition will inspire conversation and reflection on the important role of women in our society.”
The featured artists are Aaron Trotman, Akilah Watts, Alanis Forde, Ancel Daniel, Anna Gibson, Amanda Trought, Christina Murray, Donne Haynes, Giselle Walker, Heidi Berger, Jaryd Niles Morris, Katherine Kennedy, Lisa Smith Fields, Margaret Herbert, Omowale Stewart, Ronald Williams, Shane Eastmond, Sheena Rose, Sian Pampellonne, Tracy Greenidge, Walter Bailey and Yaa Marshall.

Inspired by the rapidly increasing examples of women in places of authority and leadership and music that uplifts and energizes the feminine such as TC’s song ‘Sisters of the Caribbean’ we aim to explore the formative role that women play in crafting a better society especially in Barbados. Our exhibition will bring to view the look of triumph and victory after the struggles and challenges and the mechanism with which ‘she’ arms herself for any battles on the path. We look forward to the day when gender is no longer noted when ranking success i.e. we look forward to the day where equity and equality have been achieved, making female appointments too common place to be worthy of a celebration.
Society is an evolving paradigm in constant change, therefore the male - female dynamic also changes. The roles of the woman at the turn of the 20th century were very different when compared to the woman in the 21st century. In most instances we have added to our plates. This differs according to the specific cultures. At the turn of the 20th century women within the Commonwealth were allowed to study but not allowed to receive degrees regardless of intellectual prowess. In Barbados, married women weren’t allowed to work. Both scenarios are typified in the story of Muriel Hanschell, identified as a trailblazing woman in Barbados. This seems almost unheard of in 2023 where women attain the highest level of academic qualifications and married women have to, want to and do work outside of the home. Change is constant.
In 2023 Barbados we have supreme examples of Barbadian women breaking the glass ceiling. Our first female prime minister – The Honorable Mia Amor Mottley - was elected in 2018 and we have strong example of other trailblazing women who boldly went were women weren’t allowed to go before not only for personal gain or equity but also for a better society. We are proud of these women.
This exhibition will highlight triumphs or victories along the path to embracing the multifaceted nature of the female. Feminine liberation, not only seen as acceptance within traditionally male arenas but in the uplifting and honouring of traditional female roles such as mothering and care giving will also be celebrated.
We also seek to explore the coping mechanisms employed by women that enable them to ‘get through the day’. What does she need to put on or take off physically and metaphorically to succeed? Some women sanitize their femininity to be perceived as gender neutral in the work environment to stave off unwelcomed advances. Some use it to advance.

Ayissa Textile Designs imprints on local market
Designer Ayissa Burnett
“As we continue to celebrate women this month, the National Cultural Foundation is highlighting the journey and work of artist and designer Ayissa Burnett in this two-part feature. Next we will feature her daughter Shanika Burnett who is also an artist and designer.
She is the textile and fibre artist behind Ayissa Texitle Designs, located at #8 Pelican Craft Centre. She creates a range of home goods which includes, but is not limited to, soft furnishing pillows, throw cushions and table cloths. She also offers accessories, shirts, scarfs, shawls, wall pieces and a commercial line of mugs which feature her fabric designs. The artist’s pieces are not only handmade but ecofriendly as well. They are created with the best all natural fibres and dye products available on the market.
“We were certified in 2016 by the Future Centre Trust as a green business so we take care and we pay a lot of attention to the products that we are using, how they impact the environment…how sustainable they are…” Burnett has been an active artist and teacher for about 30 years. She started out when she was a young girl by learning crochet and knitting from her aunt.
Back then, she also did smocking as a hobby. After, she started to sew but finding the materials to work with was a challenge so she got into designing her own fabrics for her garments. She gains inspiration and bounces ideas with her daughter, Shanika Burnett who also designs under her label Shakad Designs. She creates the fabric while her daughter makes the products. Despite Ayissa Textile Designs and Shakad Designs being two separate businesses, they often collaborate. In 2022, their joint efforts could be viewed at the NCF’s Wearable Art Exhibition.
“After a while, Shanika came along and she was really into the fashion and she started to create pieces that were beyond my imagination…she was doing a fantastic job with what she was coming up with in terms of designs for the textiles…[I] put all of my energy then into designing the fabrics that she worked with and then we came up with the line of soft furnishings,” she said with a smile. Burnett’s other source of inspiration is her immediate surroundings. The colours in her work especially reflect a lot of the environment.
“Sometimes standing by my door and looking across… as the sun goes down, that is inspiration… seeing the water, the different shades of blue you get on a given day, those are sources of inspiration,” she said.
Additionally, her work uses the ancient techniques of batiking and tie dying.
“Years ago, the NCF had a training programme where they brought in a textile artist from West Africa and that too really was a springboard in further development for me in terms of the textiles… that helped me take it to another level in terms of designing and patterning…,” she said.
Over the years, she has participated in other NCF workshops such as the Adinkra Workshop in 2003 and more recently, the Accelerate to Export Symposium 2022. Furthermore, she has been an instructor for NCF’s Community Development Craft Workshop and Youth Achieving Results Visual Art Programme, a judge at the National Independence Festival of Creative Arts and an assistant curator for the Celebrating Textiles Exhibition.
As someone who has worked and taught with the NCF on multiple occasion, she recommended that other creatives form a relationship with the NCF as well as pointed out the training opportunities such as the current workshop in leather craft and crochet.
Going forward, she wants to increase and build the presence of Ayissa Textiles and carry on their legacy. Moreover, she wants to continue to share and give back through her workshops.
She shared some advice for those who are interested in taking a similar path: “You have to be passionate about the work you are doing. You have to have that stickability… because the journey has been long and the roads were rough sometimes… it has its ups and downs so you have to be willing to stick it out. Every day is not a picnic and you have to be willing to put your all into it,” she said.
Ayissa Textile Designs can be found on Instagram and Facebook at ayissatextiledesigns or on their website www.ayissatextiledesigns.com “ (PR)
