preamble This portfolio is a cross section of project types, locations, scales, and project delivery methods. My 13+ years of experience in architecture were gathered while living and working in Toronto, Halifax, Edmonton, Oxford, UK, and now Victoria. My experience ranges from transportation, commercial, healthcare, education, civic, industrial, and residential. Delivery types range from design-bid-build, design-build, construction management, and publicprivate partnership. Over the course of my career, I have hired, mentored, and supervised staff ranging from students to development managers. In my role as a Director of Capital Projects with the Province of British Columbia, I am commonly involved in strategic initiatives, establishing and refining business processes, managing a team of professionals, and, with my colleagues, have been responsible for the oversight of a portfolio ranging from $60-$140M+ per year. My career path has always been driven by my passion for the built environment and its influence on our communities and society. With an average of 90% of our lives spent indoors and nearly all of our lives spent in built environments, it’s our duty to provide thoughtful and considerate design to better the lives of those that inhabit it.

healthcare Healthcare architecture is highly specialized, requiring a careful balance between medical function and user comfort. Factors such as lighting and material play a critical role to the mental well being of the patients. The field of medicine and the wellbeing of our society relies heavily on well-design, proper-functioning medical facilities.
Comox Valley Hospital Design Architect / Client Liaison / Project Coordination / Presentation
The new $331.7m P3 hospital will be completed in 2017. The 153 bed, 39,826m2 facility is located in Courtney BC and is designed to serve the larger community. This hospital is being built as part of the North Island Hospital P3, which combines Comox and Campbell River hospitals and parkades. The design concept includes connection to nature through colour and material selections, as well as functional elements such as covered entrances that bring the scale back to human proportion. As design architect, my role was to develop the core and shell design and envelope detailing, as well as working with VIHA and Graham to create a building that will help the community it supports. Campbell River Hospital Design Architect / Client Liaison / Project Coordination / Presentation

The new $274.5m P3 hospital was completed in 2017. At 32,316m2, the 95 bed facility was designed to support Campbell River and the surrounding communities and was designed in collaboration with the first nation M13 The concept for Campbell River Hospital was to reflect on nature; with a charcoal base, representing community. bedrock, the striations of blue, representing the nearby water, rippling in the sun, and the muted penthouse, blending into the grey/blue skies. The white stair cores pay homage to traditional hospital vernacular with ribbons of galvalume which will blend into the cores at a distance and glisten off the sun up close. The building envelope balanced between access to light and building energy performance, using fiberglass fenestration and double z-girt connections in order to minimize thermal bridging and improve user comfort.

Royal Columbian Hospital: Mental Health and Substance Use Wellness Centre Design Architect / Project Coordination / Presentation
The new mental health and substance use wellness centre is the first phase of a three phase hospital transformation. Budgeted at $258.9M, the new 75-bed centre includes new and expanded outpatient clinics, Fraser Health’s first older adult psychiatric unit, and a psychiatric high acuity unit, all to replace the aging 30bed Sherbrooke Centre. My role during the P3 pursuit in this project was to re-imagine the initial concept design into what you see before you today, incorporating first nation art into the glazing and elegantly integrating the energy centre mechanical requirements into the wellness centre design.

transportation Transportation is at the core of what defines a community. It is what helps the community function, by connecting people and places. The architecture must relate to the values that define that place while providing a sense of familiarity and comfort.
North LRT (Metro Line) | Edmonton, AB

The Metro Line is a $665M, 3.3 km extension of the light rail transit system from Churchill LRT Station in downtown Edmonton to the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT). This Line consists of two new permanent LRT stations, a transit centre, a temporary station and multiple ancillary buildings (TPSS). Of the three Stations and transit centre, MacEwan and Kingsway/Royal Alex. inhibit a design philosophy of maintaining a unified architectural language through the use of similar materials while creating a unique identity for each station. This design strategy is intended to reinforce civic identity for the City of Edmonton while providing way-finding within the City. NAIT is currently designed as a temporary shelter. The language of movement and sense of icon are prevalent throughout the station designs.

A variance was required due to the length of the structure and the distance between exits. The variance was granted based on compensating measures that provide an equal or greater level of safety to the public. Kingsway/Royal Alex LRT Station and Bus Transit Station
The Kingsway/Royal Alex LRT Station was designed according to the Alberta Building Code requirements for a Group A, Division 2, assembly occupancy. The building is 1 storey, combustible construction, and is not sprinklered. The platform area is 1,107 m2. No variance was required for Kingsway/ Royal Alex Station. The Bus Transit Station was also designed to Group A, Division 2, assembly occupancy. The building is one storey, has an enclosed area of 162 m2 (1,720 ft.2) and is not sprinklered.
Space Heating
The buildings are heated with high-efficiency gas furnaces. All the heating ducts run under the platforms in the crawl spaces or basements. All the heated areas have insulated walls and double-glazed windows to minimize heat loss. Supplementary www.wood-works.org heating is provided at main doors by electric force-flow heaters and there are air curtains to reduce heat loss.

Bethel Transit Terminal
Bethel Transit Terminal | Strathcona Valley, AB Designer / Project Coordination / Presentation / Production
At $23M, the transit terminal is one of Alberta’s largest. The project scope included 20 bus bays and day parking for 1,200 stalls. The intention behind the curvilinear form was to create natural weather barriers along the face of the building, while increasing sight-lines of staff at the bookended ticket booths. This concept also reinforces the expression of movement often associated with transit - weaving throughout the city. On this project, I supported the project architect with design and construction documentation.

Camosun Centre Health + Wellness
Designer / Client Liaison / Project Coordination / Presentation The concept plan for the Centre for Health + Wellness at Camosun’s Interurban Campus is intended to analyze, relocate and expand their existing health and wellness program, currently located on their Lansdown Campus. The overall building concept is about making connections to nature, while connecting the PISE building with the rest of the campus. These connections are made visually and physically. This is done through the use of a central atrium, an exterior colonnade, a therapeutic garden carved into the landscape and an internal grid structure, which re-purposes the internal streets for collaboration spaces that connect to nature. The building form is a result of preserving views from PISE, creating intuitive entrances and emphasizing collaboration and flex space.

Pitt Meadows Pump Station Design Lead / Client Liaison / Project Coordination / Presentation / Production
The concept design shown here was to create a corten faceted form that was driven by the function of the space - height provided over the mezzanine section inside and protection of the elements at the entrance. The material choice and hard lines were based on the backdrop of mountains, tall grasses and rusting farm roofs and equipment, creating a commonality, yet juxtaposed in form and design. This project was put on hold part way through the construction document phase.

urban design Programming space in the confines of a building limits the public interaction to the building and its immediate surroundings, but masterplanning and urban design creates spaces from the negative space between the built environment. These spaces, often public, form the fabric of our communities and have a lasting impact on the environment, the economy, and the social cohesion of our culture. Inclusionary design, health and wellbeing, and a sustainable environment are at the forefront of good urban design.
GVHA Ogden Point Masterplan Urban Design / Presentation / Production
Ogden Point’s primary use is as a cruise terminal. The few existing buildings on site are largely geared to supporting the cruise or marine industry. Cruise ships are a five month a year operation, thus, leaving the site largely underutilized several months of the year. Through the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority (GVHA), we have developed a functional plan in order to optimize the use of the site through a mixed use development and generate revenue. This project involved the engagement of several user groups and public open houses. The intent is to rezone the site and develop an implementation strategy to allow for a redevelopment that will improve tourism, benefit the marine industry and the local residents. My role was to provide design and presentation support to the principle in charge.

“This thesis investigates the tectonic and social interactions created through the adaptive reuse of the Arlington 250.216.8672 Apartments. This thesis will provide a new typology, promoting urban living at the human scale by providing walk-up, flexi-housing that is both affordable and sustainable. It addresses the tectonic interaction between the new and old architecture, creating a habitable threshold through a legible architecture. It also provides various degrees of social spaces for the tenants and the general public. This thesis serves as an example to help densify Edmonton’s downtown core while providing an active streetscape.” Corrado Agnello
