Elementary Teacher of the Year

Rachel Beavers, Windsor Park Elementary School During a year like no other, Ms. Beavers engaged her students with warmth, intelligence and an unflappable demeanor. She recognized the importance of modeling and fostering resilience in her students. She also recognized the importance of helping her colleagues adapt to our new “higher-tech” teaching world so they could be successful in virtual classrooms.

Secondary Teacher of the Year Luisa White, Foy H. Moody High School Ms. White has demonstrated a passion for teaching, for connecting with sometimes hardto-reach teenagers, and for holding students to high standards even during a year full of distractions. Ms. White said, “I have always wanted to enact change and make an impact on this world, and it became clear to me that the best avenue through which change can be enacted is through education.”

Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez recently announced the February Above the Line employees of the month. Three

honorees were surprised at their work locations with the announcement they had been selected.

Marie Chavez

Instructional Teacher Advisor, Foy H. Moody HS Mrs. Chavez does an outstanding job of encouraging students and teachers to reach for more.

Students and teachers feel the enthusiasm she has in assisting them and helping them to be successful. She is extremely techy and is always available to help others in need.

Mrs. Chavez takes on any and all issues with a smile and manages to find solutions to those problems. She is not afraid to ask questions and offer opinions about different situations.

Mrs. Chavez knows that it is all about the students and in order to help maintain their success she knows that the teachers must be successful as well. She is a leader in the village that is Moody High School.

Jennifer Arismendi

Ms. Arismendi shows leadership in the face of continuous transitions. Natalie Menchaca

Over the past few months, we have had several changes in our front office due to retirements and resignations. Natalie has been exceptionally willing and eager to help out in any way. She has taken initiative to learn new tasks and responsibilities outside of her role. She has worked with new staff to help them learn systems and procedures, along with improving productivity within the attendance office. She aspires to take on other positions on campus and advance in her career.

Daily, Natalie demonstrates that she is a team player. She holds high standards of professionalism, and is an exemplar for providing top-notch customer service to our students, parents, staff, and community.

Natalie has worked the front foyer window for most of the past 2 years. She makes sure that every student and parent that comes to our campus is greeted and cared for through exceptional customer service. Students feel comfortable meeting with Natalie to discuss attendance and other concerns related to school.

Educators may Spam Email or now deduct out-of- Phishing Attack? pocket expenses for COVID-19 protective items

Eligible educators can deduct unreimbursed expenses for COVID-19 protective items to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the classroom. COVID-19 protective items include, but are not limited to: • face masks • disinfectant for use against COVID-19 • hand soap/hand sanitizer • disposable gloves • tape, paint or chalk to guide social distancing • physical barriers (for example, clear plexiglass) • air purifiers • other items recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to be used for the prevention of the spread of COVID-19.

Rev. Proc. 2021-15 provides guidance related to educators and their expenses under the COVID-related Tax Relief Act of 2020, which was enacted as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021. The new law clarifies that unreimbursed expenses paid or incurred after March 12, 2020, by eligible educators for protective items used to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the classroom qualify for the educator expense deduction.

The educator expense deduction rules permit eligible educators to deduct up to $250 of qualifying expenses per year ($500 if married filing jointly and both spouses are eligible educators, but not more than $250 each).

CCISD Early Notice Incentive For the tenth year, CCISD will be offering professional contract employees (teachers and administrators) an Early Notice Incentive. This year’s incentive will be extended to all teachers and administrators who have at least ten (10) total years of experience (outside CCISD as well).

Employees who meet the criteria and who notify the District by March 22, 2021, of their intention to resign at the end of the 2020-2021 school year will qualify.

Eligible educators include any individual who is a kindergarten through grade 12 teacher, instructor, counselor, principal, or aide in a school for at least 900 hours during a school year.

This deduction is for expenses paid or incurred during the tax year. Taxpayers claim the deduction on Form 1040, Form 1040-SR or Form 1040-NR (attached Schedule 1 (Form 1040)).
