Corpus Christi ISD’s Board of Trustees earned top honors at the 2026 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards, proudly being named the statewide winner in the School Board category during Sunday evening’s celebration in Houston. The prestigious recognition includes a $25,000 award and highlights the board’s outstanding leadership, vision and continued commitment to educational excellence across South Texas.
“This recognition from H-E-B is an incredible honor for our Board of Trustees,” said Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez. “H-E-B’s unwavering support of public education makes this award especially meaningful. This achievement reflects the hard work, leadership and dedication of our trustees, alongside the commitment of our students, staff and families, who make excellence possible every day.”
During the awards dinner and ceremony, Mary Carroll High School Teacher, Deanna Evans, was honored as one of the five state finalists in the Rising Star category.
CCISD has a Leadership Definition, which we use to select Above the Line employee of the month winners. Help us celebrate these outstanding employees by submitting an Above the Line nomination!

Corpus Christi ISD, in partnership with The Holdsworth Center, created a leadership definition to guide the how of our work in support of the district’s mission and vision.
• Prioritize growth and resiliency
• Earn autonomy through excellence
• Promote shared accountability
CCISD has a Leadership Definition, which we use to select Above the Line employee of the month winners. District leaders recently announced Above the Line employee of the month winners! Honorees were surprised at their work locations with the announcement they were selected. Nominate someone who goes Above the Line.
Diana Villarreal, Advanced Academics Specialist
Diana Villarreal follows the definition by Shaping the Future. Ms. Villarreal takes every opportunity she can to highlight the district and recruit new students and families. As the champion for all student competitions, Ms. Villarreal ensures staff and students have what they need. She creates informational pieces and revises materials annually. Ms. Villarreal’s leadership has led to national recognition from the National Hispanic Institute and Destination Imagination.
Heather Ybarbo follows the definition by Shaping the Future. She is a champion of a positive culture, implementing effective and sustainable systems that streamline background clearances and student teacher placements. Ms. Ybarbo has developed relationships with our university partners and consistently works with them to establish timely, successful placements. Thanks to her dedication, our future educators are fully supported, and a strong foundation is maintained for the district’s growth.
Alan Webb, Special Education Teacher, Creekside ES
Alan Webb follows the definition by Developing Hearts. Mr. Webb serves with unwavering intent and purpose. Mr. Webb’s classroom is a place of belonging; students feel respected, capable and supported. He approaches each child with patience and compassion—modeling perseverance, adaptability and optimism. The structure Mr. Webb provides begets student growth; academic and personal. His nurturing presence and dedication have made a lasting impact.
Debra Davenport, Substitute , Jones ES
Debra Davenport follows the definition by Empowering Minds. Ms. Davenport embraced the learning curve of mastering instructional programs, planning and pacing with steadfast determination. She sought guidance, collaborated closely with the second-grade team, and implemented lessons that were rigorous and engaging. By modeling perseverance and a growth mindset, she empowered her students to embrace challenges, take risks and develop confidence in their own abilities.
Our Metro Elementary School of Design students now have a shipshape place to read, imagine and explore! Thank you to everyone who joined us for this exciting library reveal. A special thank-you to the Education Service Center, Region 2, for hosting the celebration. The new library at Metro Elementary School of Design is part of the LEARN IT grant funding awarded to ESC, Region 2.
During the April 27 Board of Trustees Meeting, the board recognized several CCISD employees.
The following were recognized:
• Technology for the DAC Award.
• Creekside Elementary School Counselor for the Outstanding Site Supervisor award from TAMU-CC.
• April Above the Line Winners.
During the meeting, the board also approved the following:
• Cafeteria furniture for Moody and Ray High School Food Services Fund.
• Special Education Contracted Services.
