ATHLETICS Beginning July 1, all CCISD athletic events will transition to online ticketing. Fans can purchase tickes by scanning QR codes at each venue, ahead of time online through the CCISD Athetics website or through the HomeTown Fan app on your smartphone.

Dr. Roland Hernandez named ESC, Region 2 Superintendent of the Year Corpus Christi ISD Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez has been named the Education Service Center, Region 2 Superintendent of the Year.

As the Region 2 recipient, Dr. Hernandez will now advance to compete for the Texas Superintendent of the Year award. The award recognizes superintendents who demonstrate exceptional leadership in improving student achievement, improving the quality of education in their districts and fostering public support and community involvement in education.

In 2024, Dr. Hernandez was named Superintendent of the Year by the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association. He was also a state finalist for the Texas Association of School Boards Superintendent of the Year award in 2020.

“This recognition is a testament to Dr. Hernandez’s exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to the students, staff and families of CCISD,” said Board President Dolly Gonzales Trolley. “We are proud to see his work recognized at the regional level and wish him the very best as he advances in the Texas Superintendent of the Year competition.”

Dr. Hernandez was named the Superintendent of CCISD in 2014 and has nearly 30 years of administrative experience. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Texas State University, his master’s degree from the University of Houston-Clear Lake and his doctorate from The University of Texas at Austin.

State finalists for the Texas Superintendent of the Year award will be announced in the fall.

School board adopts 2026-27 budget, including raises During their June 8 meeting, CCISD’s board of trustees approved the district’s 2026-2027 budget, a $368 million package that includes raises for all eligible permanent employees, including market adjustments to the minimum, midrange and maximum pay grades, the first such adjustment since the 2021-2022 school year.

Recommendations, based on the Texas Association of School Boards Salary Study of CCISD’s pay rates, include a $680 raise for teachers, as well as equity adjustments for teachers with 5-8, 10-24 or 41-45 years of service.

Nurses, librarians and instructional coaches were moved to the administrative salary schedule from the teacher salary schedule. Administrator pay adjustments included a 1 percent midpoint increase as well as pay equity for administrators on the teacher career pathway, including diagnosticians, principals, assistant principals, counselors and librarians.

Auxiliary employees (outside of food services, which received a 3 percent increase at midpoint, and maintenance employees, who received a six-day reduction in their work calendar, while maintaining their previous rate of pay), will receive a 1 percent increase at midpoint as well as pay scale adjustments to spread pay equitably and avoid pay compression.

The board expressed their appreciation to district staff for prioritizing employee raises as well as for making significant progress toward reducing the district’s deficit. In May, district staff reported to the board a projected deficit reduction from nearly $22 million to just over $2.7 million.

The district proposed a tax rate of $0.9583, a rate held since the 2023-2024 school year and a decrease from years prior. The tax rate is expected to be finalized and adopted in late August, following the late July receipt of the certified tax rolls.

“We are grateful to our school board for demonstrating their unwavering support of our employees by approving well-deserved pay increases,” said Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez. “By working to keep pace with the market, we can continue to recruit and retain a high-performing team for the benefit of our community’s children.”

In the Boardroom: June 8 Meeting

During the June 8 Board of Trustees Meeting, the board recognized: • CCISD being named an American Heart Association District of Lifesavers.

• TASB Media Honor Roll Nominees - Jeremy Landers, KIII 3 News, and Don Dunlap, KEDT/South Texas Public Broadcasting.

The board learned more about Lone Star Governance Goal and progress measure for Discipline and Attendance and received an update on the Teacher Incentive Allotment Program. The board also approved the following: • • • •

Agreement for purchase and installation of electronic door access control additions at 14 elementary schools.

Purchase of districtwide custodial supplies.

Award for fine arts related services.

Purchase and agreement for desktops and laptops districtwide.

Board of Trustees names vice president

During the June 8 school board meeting, the Corpus Christi ISD trustees named Eric Villarreal, P.E., as vice president, filling a vacant board officer position.

The board traditionally selects officers each November.

Villarreal, Client Service Manager with engineering and consulting firm Ardurra Group, Inc., was elected to the board in November 2022. He represents District 1.

District staff selected as Corpus Christi Under 40 honorees We are proud to celebrate two of our own who were selected as Corpus Christi Under 40 honorees!

Trent Wagner, Executive Director of Construction and Project Management, and Lauren Munguia, Assistant Director Finance-Compliance in the Office of Food Services, were named among the 2026 Corpus Christi Under 40 Honorees by the Young Professionals of the Coastal Bend.

The recognition highlights emerging leaders who are making a significant impact in their professions and communities throughout the Coastal Bend. This year, more than 70 nominations were submitted, with honorees selected through a competitive review process.

Munguia and Wagner are among 34 chosen for this honor. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor!
