Semifinalists named for the 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year

The Teacher of the Year Selection Committee has narrowed the campus nominees to 15 semifinalists (10 elementary and 5 secondary). Each semifinalist was asked to submit additional essays, which will be judged by the selection committee. Next month, the committee will name six finalists - three elementary and three secondary teachers.

Travis Elementary School Maria Alvarado, Lorenzo de Zavala Elementary School The committee interviews finalists in March. The elementary and secondary TOY winners will be announced during a press conference on Tuesday, March 19.

All nominees and their guests are invited to the 2019 Teacher of the Year Banquet set for Wednesday, April 17, at the American Bank Center.

Tickets will be on sale from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on March 22 at the Office of Communications. Additional information will be sent via email.

Above the Line Employees of the Month Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez recently announced the January Above the Line employees. Three honorees are surprised at their work locations with the announcement they have been selected.

Stacy Mitchan goes above the line each and every day in her role as assistant principal. She has lunch with students every day and mentors them. Mrs. Mitchan works with our fourthgrade writing teacher daily to ensure students’ success. She personally reads the students’ compositions and then works with them on how they can improve. She runs a revising and editing station in order to help our students be successful. She sees where our weaknesses are, comes up with a plan of action, and puts it into play. She never asks teachers to do anything that she would not be willing to do herself.

Auxiliary - Patricia Cortez, Cafeteria Manager Woodlawn Elementary School

Patricia Cortez is a team player and goes out of her way to be kind and thoughtful to everyone. She is a hard worker and is willing to go above and beyond to assist students and staff alike. When a parent has a concern about their child, she tries to remedy the situation to the best of her ability.

Educator - Amalia Barragan, Teacher Zachary Kolda Elementary School

Amalia Barragan doesn’t settle for average; she always strives for excellence and her work is a reflection of that. She uses her creativity and passion to design lessons that are engaging and exciting. Most important, she brings math to life. She is constantly giving students the opportunity to make realworld connections. Some examples of her work include the transformations of her classroom into a Mexican restaurant, a construction zone, operating room, pizzeria, and Candy Land.

Ms. Barragan is also willing to collaborate and share her ideas with other teachers in the district.
