February is Heart Health Awareness Month Dr. D. Scott Elliff Scholarship Award 2024 Looking for financial support to help complete your college degree or teaching certification? The Dr. D. Scott Elliff Scholarship Award was established to support CCISD staff who are attending classes to earn a college degree to become an educator or, if degree has already been received, need to obtain a State Teaching Certification. The scholarship award amount is $500.

It is a great opportunity for members to focus on their cardiovascular health and care for their hearts. Heart disease includes several types of conditions. The most common type of heart disease is coronary heart disease which affects blood flow to the heart, which can lead to heart attack. You can lower your risk for heart disease, heart attack and stroke by understanding the risk factors and learning how to live a healthy lifestyle.

What to Know to Keep Yours Healthy

Being smart about your heart means knowing what causes heart disease and what your individual risk factors are. This fact sheet defines common heart-related terms you should know and sample questions to ask your healthcare provider to help keep your heart healthy.

The heart is a strong, muscular organ that pumps blood throughout your body.

General Heart Terms

Eligibility: • Three years employed with CCISD. • Currently enrolled at an accredited college or university.

• Or needing to obtain State Teaching Certification must have degree from an accredited college or university.

Heart health is the overall well-being of your heart. Heart-healthy living involves understanding your risk factors, making healthy choices, and taking steps to reduce your chances of getting heart disease.

Heart disease is a catchall phrase for a variety of conditions that affect the heart’s structure and function.

Cardiovascular disease is the term for all types of diseases that affect the heart or blood vessels.

Often simply referred to as “heart disease,” coronary heart disease is the most common form and occurs when plaque (a combination of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood) builds up in your arteries.

The plaque reduces the amount of oxygen-rich blood getting to your heart.

Plaque can also lead to blood clots, which block blood flow and are the most common cause of a heart attack.

Ways to Love Your Heart Heart disease cuts too many lives short. But here’s the good news: There are simple steps you can take to nurture and protect your heart every day.

Tip the scales in your favor. Maintain a healthy weight to help your heart pump more efficiently. A 10-pound weight loss can lower blood pressure and reduce strain on your heart.

Heart rate, also referred to as your pulse, is the number of times your heart beats in one minute. Resting heart rates vary from person to person.

Act fast. Call 9–1–1.

A heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction, happens when the flow of blood that brings oxygen to a part of your heart muscle suddenly becomes blocked. Your heart can’t get enough oxygen. If blood flow is not restored quickly, the heart muscle will begin to die.

Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops pumping.

If this happens, blood stops flowing to the brain and other vital organs.

Nosh on the good stuff. Reach for fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and skinless poultry and fish first. They reduce plaque that clogs arteries and blood vessels.

Move more. Add 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity at least five days a week to help your heart beat strong.

Plus, it lowers stress and keeps the extra pounds off!

Keep your numbers in check. Take steps to lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels if they are high.

This will also reduce your risk for heart disease, heart attack and stroke.

A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is blocked. This prevents the brain from getting oxygen and nutrients from blood. Without oxygen and nutrients, brain cells begin to die within minutes. A stroke is also called a transient ischemic attack or cerebrovascular accident.

Protect your heart so you can spend more time with people you love.

Teacher Fellowship Award 2024

Do you need Professional Development Training for Pre-AP or AP this summer? The CCISD Teacher Fellowship Award funds registration and some travel expenses for CCISD teachers to attend College Board approved professional development courses in PreAP or AP at sum¬mer institutes or seminars in Texas. Awards vary in value depending on requests, up to approximately $1,500.

Eligibility: • Five years teaching experience • Three years teaching in CCISD • Currently teaching a secondary PreAP or AP course, seeking to increase or improve mastery of subject matter.

Would you like in-district daycare?

Good news! CCISD is exploring the possibility of offering infant to age two daycare to employees at the established programs on our five high school campuses, which would also continue to serve our student parents. If approved, the employee program would be a collaboration with Workforce Solutions, and fees would follow a sliding scale.
