CCISD trustees approve placing Bond 2022 on ballot

MEET MICHELLE FRAUSTO VELASQUEZ! It is Michelle’s first year with CCISD! She teaches 2nd grade at Metro E School of Design.

In her spare time, Michelle enjoys making jewelry and other things out of clay and resin. She also enjoys sharpening her sign language skills.

Michelle is new to Corpus Christi, enjoys Starbucks and Italian food and a variety of music.

During Monday night’s regular board meeting, Corpus Christi ISD’s trustees approved placing a $220 million bond proposal on the Nov. 8 ballot. The measure would not affect residents’ tax rate.

The bond package includes a new campus for Carl O. Hamlin Middle School, a 68-year-old, open wing campus. If approved, the new school would be built on Hamlin property while students continued classes in their current school.

To accommodate continued growth on the city’s south side, the proposal includes a new middle school on property the district owns near Creekside Elementary School.

Nearly $13 million is allocated for renovations to T.G. Allen Elementary School, which is slated to house students from George Evans Elementary School, an aging building that relies on portable buildings to accommodate students. If approved, the renovations are expected to be complete in 2024.

Additional funds would allow construction of additional gymnasiums at Dorothy Adkins Middle School and Robert Driscoll Middle School, as well as replace aging playgrounds and marquees the district has identified as in need.

“We appreciate our board’s support of the district’s recommendation,” said Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez. “Since 2008, voters have approved funds for nearly 20 new school buildings, with significant renovations at many others. We appreciate the value our community places in public education, including providing students and staff with contemporary learning environments.”
