District announces new leaders
As CCISD plans for the upcoming school year, the district will keep the community updated regarding new leadership assignments. Today, the district announced key district-level appointments.
Division of Curriculum and Instruction:
Dr. Kelsie Wagner has been named Deputy Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. Wagner earned her master’s and doctorate degrees from Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi and her bachelor’s from the University of Texas at Austin. A CCISD graduate, she returned to Corpus Christi after college, accepting a position as a 5th grade teacher at Travis Elementary School, prior to earning roles including assistant principal, principal and Assistant Superintendent for School Leadership.
“Our deputy superintendent for curriculum and instruction is a key role, overseeing our continuous pursuit of academic excellence as well as whole child education,” said Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez. “The search committee valued Dr. Wagner’s depth of knowledge in this complex work as well as her strong track record of positive leadership. Her ability to form collaborative, productive relationships in the district and the community will be essential assets to leading our C&I team.”
Department of Internal Audit: Laura Piazza has been named the district’s Internal Auditor. Most recently with the City of Corpus Christi, she has 14 years of experience in public school district finance. She holds a bachelor’s and a master’s from Texas A&M University-Kingsville and is working toward her CPA license. She follows Sharon Michalk, who retired in June.
Office of School Leadership: Dr. Sarah Owen has been named Assistant Superintendent for School Leadership, Elementary Schools. She holds bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, a master’s from University of Texas Arlington and a doctorate degree from Lamar University. Most recently principal of Baker Middle School, she has also served as principal of Fannin Elementary and assistant principal at Hamlin Middle School.
Scott Walker also has been named Assistant Superintendent for School Leadership, Elementary Schools. In addition to serving as Veterans Memorial High School’s second principal, his experience includes teaching and coaching at King High School. He is currently studying toward his superintendent’s certificate at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
“Our commitment to developing a strong leadership pipeline, in partnership with The Holdsworth Center, has led to a deep bench of leaders fully prepared to serve in their new roles,” Hernandez said. “We can’t wait to welcome families to a new school year.”
There’s a lot of great “gossip” going around… and this time, it’s all good!
Our Positive Gossip campaign is all about celebrating the incredible moments happening across our district. Gossip ranges from inspiring teachers and standout students to exciting campus events.
We’ve already shared stories like a mother-daughter teaching duo at Rose Shaw Elementary, a Solomon M. Coles High School teacher featured in The Bend magazine, and a Mary Carroll High School student who saved a life using CPR.

District announces new leaders for Baker, Cunningham Middle School at South Park
As CCISD plans for the upcoming school year, the district will keep the community updated regarding new leadership assignments. Today, the district announced two campus-level appointments.
Baker Middle School: Rachel Neff-Rupp has been named principal of Baker Middle School. Most recently, she served as principal of Cunningham Middle School at South Park, where she established the school’s STEM+M program in partnership with the Baylor College of Medicine. She follows Dr. Sarah Owen, who was recently named one of two Assistant Superintendents of School Leadership for Elementary Schools.
Cunningham Middle School at South Park:
Danny Noyola Jr. has been named principal of Cunningham Middle School at South Park. Most recently, he was principal of Haas Middle School. In addition to serving as principal at Garcia Elementary School, he was an assistant principal at Cunningham Middle School prior to the school’s consolidation with South Park Middle School.
“Mrs. Neff-Rupp and Mr. Noyola are proven leaders who excel in building cohesive instructional teams as well as forging strong relationships throughout the community,” said Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez. “We are confident the Broncs and Wolves communities will have a smooth transition to the new school year.”
The district anticipates naming a new principal for Veterans Memorial High School prior to the beginning of the school year.
