Things are not done by halves in Qatar.

During our visit early November, 2019, this tiny sovereign state was building six new stadiums and a complete metro system in preparation for the FIFA World Cup in 2022.

As well, an armada of new five star hotels were under construction and Hamad International Airport in Doha was launching a massive expansion. Already ranked as the fourth best airport in the world at the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2019, the airport is growing to accommodate the increasing demand from global travellers.

Qatar has long tickled our curiosity. This little peninsula from which Al Jazeera broadcasts and which borders Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf enjoys the highest per capita income in the world - along with the planet’s third largest deposits of oil and gas.

Despite an economic and diplomatic blockade

by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates Qatar is flourishing and remains a significant power in the Arab world.

Doha is home to the international Media network, Al Jazeera.

World firsts seem to accumulate with ease in Qatar. Qatar Airways was judged Best Airline along with Best Business Class by Skytrax.

The airline’s freight business is the world’s largest air freight business while its operation in Doha to ensure fine dining in the sky is the world’s biggest single-location catering facility.

A visit to Qatar Airways’ freight operation in Doha dispels any notions that the air freight business is the less glamorous cousin of aviation. Here, we learn of million-dollar race horses flying with their grooms, F1 cars, MotoGP bikes - and well-heeled travellers taking their Lambo along on holiday.

Similarly a four kilometre wander around the vast twin floors of the airline’s catering operation is a fascinating experience – for both the quality and attention to detail and the sheer size of the operation.

Madrid top business destination for 2019

The World Travel Awards, held since 1993, are known as the ‘Tourism Oscars’ in the industry

Madrid was named the World’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination at the 26th edition of the World Travel Awards 2019 (WTA).

The award was collected the award from WTA founder Graham Cooke at the ceremony held at the Royal Opera House in Muscat, Oman.

Madrid was nominated in two categories: ‘World’s Leading Business Travel Destination 2019’ and ‘World’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination 2019’. It was also nominated in the latter category in 2018, but this year it took first place, beating Las Vegas -ending the city’s six-edition winning streak - and 10 other competitors including Paris, Dubai, Hong Kong and Abu Dhabi.

Before reaching the world finals, Madrid also took first place in the ‘Europe’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination’ category for the second year in a row at the regional edition of the World Travel Awards in June.

level of satisfaction among clients and professionals all strengthen the city’s international image, and they were key factors in cementing its position as the world leader and enabling it to surpass previous business figures.

Regarded worldwide as a seal of excellence in the tourism industry, the annual edition of the WTA covers the entire globe with the Grand Tour.

“This award for the city of Madrid recognises the work, investment and professionalisation of both public bodies and the private sector, with the aim of demonstrating that Madrid is a global leader in MICE sector amenities,” said Madrid representative, Almudena Maíllo.

“Every day, both Madrid City Council and the private sector work in partnership with Madrid Convention

Bureau, a body attached to Madrid Destino and the City Council’s Department of Culture, Tourism and Sport, to achieve the goal of positioning the Spanish capital as a leading MICE tourism destination.

According to the 2018 MICE Tourism Market Study, conducted by the firm, 23,330 meetings were held in Madrid in 2018. This was 15 percent more than in 2017, and the number of attendees rose by 11 percent.

The number of participants increased from 1,155,645 to 1,284,515.

In addition to receiving the World Travel Awards recognising it as the world’s top meetings and conference destination in 2019 and as Europe’s top destination in 2018 and 2019, the city of Madrid also ranks third in the ICCA’s global ranking, compiled with data on over 1600 destinations, and it is a member of the Best Cities Global Alliance.

American Airlines to launch increased New Zealand connections American Airlines has unveiled plans to launch the only non-stop service from Los Angeles International Airport to Christchurch, New Zealand, next October.

LAX to Christchurch creates unique onestop connections to the South Island not previously available by any other carrier.

The airline is also adding the only direct service between Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and Auckland, which will increase connecting opportunities for more customers across the United States.

The routes are a direct result of the recently approved joint business with Qantas, which delivers new customer benefits like enhanced codeshare opportunities and increased frequent flyer benefits for American and Qantas customers.

“The South Island sums up everything that our customers

are looking for in New Zealand - adventure, culture and wildlife found nowhere else,” said Vasu Raja, American senior vice president of network strategy.

“We want to make their lifelong dreams a reality and bring New Zealand’s beauty even closer as the gateway to the South Island where you can drive, hike, cruise and fly to a variety of classic New Zealand experiences.”

American will fly to Christchurch three times per week from October next year through March, 2021 on a Boeing 787-8.

Qantas and Jetstar will connect passengers from Christchurch on to Wellington and Melbourne - some of the most popular destinations in the Pacific.

American currently operates seasonal service from Los Angeles to Auckland and will add new service from Dallas Fort Worth next year. Flights will be operated with American’s Boeing 787-9.

“Now, we’re able to get customers from places like Louisville, Savannah or Monterrey, Mexico, all the way to New Zealand with just one stop,” said Raja.

Growing tourism & trade between NZ & Canada Air Canada touches down at Auckland Airport with a new service kickstarting a $38 million injection into the New Zealand economy. vice president, Network Planning at Air Canada.

New Zealand is an increasingly popular destination with 70,000 Canadians choosing to visit in 2018, up 6.7 per cent from the previous year. Similarly, New Zealand visitor numbers grew significantly with 34,000 visitors to Canada in 2018, up 12 per cent.

“We’re proud of the contribution this will make to growing travel and trade in New Zealand. When they arrive here, the majority of Canadians travel beyond New Zealand’s main tourist centres to the regions which spreads the positive economic impact across the country, said Scott Tasker, general manager of Aeronautical Commercial “Today by adding 30,000 seats to the route it will inject around $38 million into the New Zealand economy.”

Tourism New Zealand Chief Executive Stephen EnglandHall said: “The North American market presents a significant opportunity for the New Zealand tourism sector so it’s great to see another service being added to the existing network.”

The new non-stop service to Vancouver provides a seamless connection to New Zealand for travellers from across Canada,

and great connectivity across North America for Kiwis.

“Vancouver airport is a worldclass hub and will connect travellers into Air Canada’s global network of nearly 220 destination on six continents.

Travellers arriving in Vancouver will have an added advantage of pre-clearing United States’ customs & immigration formalities before boarding connecting flights to the US,” said Tasker.

The new seasonal service will operate four times per week with Air Canada’s flagship Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. The season runs until the end of March 2020.

“We are excited to launch our newest South Pacific route to Auckland which offers additional opportunities for North Americans travelling to enjoy New Zealand’s summer season, and for New Zealanders travelling for a Canadian winter vacation. Qantas aims for net zero carbon emissions by 2050

In total, these commitments are the most ambitious carbon emissions targets of any airline group globally.

The Australian flag-carrier will invest $50 million over 10 years to help develop a sustainable aviation fuel industry.

The announcement means that Qantas is the only airline group to commit to cap its net emissions at 2020 levels, and the second to commit to net zero emissions by 2050.

In total, these commitments are the most ambitious carbon emissions targets of any airline group globally.

Qantas Group chief executive, Alan Joyce, said these commitments would make the airline a leader in the aviation industry’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

“We recognise that airlines have a responsibility to cut emissions and combat climate change.

We’ve already made some good progress, especially by investing in newer aircraft that have a

much smaller carbon footprint.

We want to do more, and faster.

“We’re effectively doubling our carbon offsetting programme and we’re capping our net emissions across Qantas and Jetstar from 2020 so that all new flying will be carbon neutral.”

emissions, has committed to halving emissions by 2050 compared to 2005 levels.

Qantas, Jetstar, QantasLink and Qantas Freight will offset all growth in emissions from domestic and international operations from 2020.

Qantas will work with industry, research institutions and governments to develop the long-term solutions to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the aviation industry over the next three decades.

This includes offsetting all net emissions from Project Sunrise, the carrier’s plan to operate nonstop flights from the east coast of Australia to London and New York, should the project proceed.

This will also extend to domestic flying, meaning that growth on key routes like MelbourneSydney will be carbon neutral.

“Qantas offsets all of its own travel needs and so do many of our customers. By matching their efforts, we’re hoping it will encourage even more people to offset and the programme will keep growing. These short-term actions will go towards a longerterm goal of being completely net carbon neutral by 2050.

“It’s ambitious, but achievable.”

Grand Pacific Hotel An icon of the South Pacific for over a century.

Great hotels are a proud reflection of the communities that they operate within and nowhere is this truer than with Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, Fiji.

Conceived in 1908 and opened in 1914 to cater for the trans Pacific passengers of the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand, Grand Pacific Hotel has played a pivotal and central role in the affairs of business and social gatherings not only within Fiji, but indeed the South Pacific for many decades, hosting a passing parade of guests that has included a veritable Who’s Who over the years (and we can suspect, a fair share of rogues and villains, mainly unrecognised by history!).

GPH, as it is affectionately known far and wide, gave Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and his colleagues a hero’s welcome, a celebration dinner and a much needed rest in 1928 when they landed opposite the hotel in Albert Park on their record breaking and awe inspiring first flight across the Pacific from California to Australia.

Certainly the visits of British royalty, well known and much publicised, have included two future Kings - Edward Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in 1920 and Prince Albert Duke of York and his wife (later George

Equally welcomed have been such notables as Dame Nellie Melba, Douglas Fairbanks, Edgar Rice Burroughs (a famed war correspondent, but also the creator of Tarzan), Burt Lancaster, Don Bradman, Noel Coward and Edmond Hillary to name but a few.

The hotel has featured in the writings of many well-known authors, including the works

of Somerset Maugham, James Mitchener (“It was grand, and it certainly was pacific, and the barefoot Indians who served the meals had a grace that few hotels in the world could offer and none surpass”), Alister McLean and Gavin Young amongst numerous others, all who were drawn to the romance and intrigue of its colonial grandeur, Suva’s exotic South Seas settings and the broad cast of characters who added spice and colour that makes for such interesting story telling.

Over the years, the Grand Old Lady gradually assumed an air of faded glory and gentile decline.

Ravaged by time, weather, newer competition and a lack of funds, the doors were closed in 1992 for what was generally considered the last time. For over two decades the building languished, derelict and abandoned, with many suspecting that it would either fall down, burn down or be bulldozed, as is so often the fate of our historical buildings.

Thankfully this was not the case and in 2014 the hotel arose like a phoenix from the ruins, a beautiful young princess once more, faithfully restored and National Trust listed, reopening to great enthusiasm and fanfare to assume her former role within Fiji and the Pacific once again.

Since reopening and with state of the art conference rooms, restaurants and additional accommodation capacity, GPH has welcomed a host of Pacific and world leaders (including Prime Ministers Modi of India and United Nations Secretary Guterres amongst many others), dignitaries, sporting heroes

and notables who add to our fascinating history on a daily basis.

There is no doubt that the return of GPH has been the catalyst that has helped bring a new vitality and freshness to Suva, a fascinating and cosmopolitan city that really is a true reflection of the South Pacific.

Certainly GPH is being rediscovered by new generations of visitors who can now enjoy the magnificent blend of colonial architecture and history, an evocative South Pacific setting and great service (recognised by the receipt of the converted Trip Advisor Travellers’ Choice award

for the last three consecutive years) all bound together with famed Fijian hospitality and friendliness.

As an interesting side note, GPH is the only hotel in the world that has not only been featured in two sets of postage stamps (in 1979 and again in 2014) but also on a national currency, proudly displayed in her 1914 grandeur against the backdrop of Suva Harbour on the current Fiji $10 note.

Hyatt Hotels launches battle against plastic “Plastic pollution is a global issue, and we hope our efforts will motivate guests, customers and, indeed, ourselves to think more critically about our use of plastic.”

Hyatt Hotels has unveiled a series of initiatives to reduce waste at its properties globally, including introducing large format bathroom amenities and reducing single-use water bottles

by June, 2021.

The following initiatives will be introduced as soon as possible in properties around the world, and no later than June 2021: • Transitioning to large-format bathroom amenities to replace traditional small bottles of shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and lotion.

• Increasing the number of water stations in key public spaces at hotels for guests who wish to refill reusable water bottles.

• Serving water in carafes or other containers for meetings and events. Bottled water will be available by request.

“At Hyatt, our purpose - we care for people so they can be their best - guides all business decisions, including our global sustainability framework, which focuses on using resources responsibly and helping address today’s most pressing environmental issues,” said Mark Hoplamazian, president and chief executive, Hyatt.

These new initiatives represent a step in Hyatt’s global sustainability programme and underscore Hyatt’s commitment to wellbeing.

Other recent global initiatives have included removing plastic straws and drink picks and making alternative options available only by request at Hyatt hotels, and increasing the use of compostable, recyclable, or recycled content packaging for to-go food containers.

While these global efforts ensure guests – both leisure and business – will consistently have the option to avoid single-use water bottles while staying at Hyatt hotels, many properties have already been introducing additional efforts to create bestin-class solutions.

UK hotels struggle in final quarter of 2019 Like the three that preceded it, the final quarter of 2019 started with a year-over-year fall in profits per available room in the UK, according to the latest data.

The 5.3 percent YOY drop in GOPPAR in October was only surpassed by the 9.4 percent plunge recorded in April, and marks the seventh month in the year to record a YOY contraction in profits.

A small 0.1 percent YOY uptick in average room rate was not enough to offset the effects of declining

occupancy, which dropped by 2.2 percentage points YOY. As a result, RevPAR fell by 2.3 percent compared to the same month last year - the biggest cutback for this metric in 2019.

Led by a decrease in food and beverage revenue per available room (down 0.7 percent YOY), non-rooms revenue also took a hit in October, recording a 1.0 percent YOY fall. With declines across all major revenue centres, total revenue per available room dropped by 1.9 percent YOY.

The inability of UK hoteliers to control costs intensified the negative effects of a shrinking top-line. Labour costs increased by 2.2 percent YOY on a peravailable-room basis, while overheads grew by 0.2 percent.

This contributed to widening the profit gap between 2019 and 2018, with YTD 2019 profit per available room lagging 0.8 percent behind YTD 2018.

Profit conversion in the UK was recorded at 39.8 percent of total revenue.

Profitable end to 2019 for Europe’ hotels Mainland Europe hoteliers celebrated a positive start to the last quarter of 2019. October marked the second consecutive month - and third month of the year - of positive growth in profit per available room compared to the same period last year, according to latest data.

A strong top line drove the 1.2 percent YOY increase in GOPPAR. In the rooms department, a combination of occupancy (up 1.0 percentage points YOY) and

average rate (up 0.1 percent YOY) led to a 1.5 percent increase in revenue per available room.

This positive trend was replicated across other revenue centres.

Specifically, food and beverage revenue, which achieved 1.0 percent YOY growth on a peravailable-room basis, while Conference and Banqueting increased by 1.2 percent YOY. Consequently, October 2019 TRevPAR was 1.9 percent higher than the same month of last year.

Expenses were also on the rise in October. Labour costs per available room climbed by 1.7 percent while overheads surged by 3.2 percent, on a YOY basis. Because of this flowthrough erosion, YTD 2019 profit per available room was still 1.7 percent below its 2018 counterpart.

Profit conversion in mainland Europe was recorded at 40.1 percent of total revenue.

Mercure Bali Legian wise choice in Bali Our choice of the four star Mercure Bali Legian for a brief stopover in Bali proves a wise decision.

of up to 100 delegates they offer complimentary set up arrangements (head table and reception table) standard sound system (with two wireless microphones)and free wifi access in all hotel areas.

Unfortunately we did not try the room service as try as we might we could not find a menu. On the TV remote it did have a food and beverage button but this came up blank.

The bathroom contained probably the largest range I have ever seen – including a shaving set, toothbrush and toothpaste, comb, vanity set and all the usual potions and lotions.

Although the Lobby was alive with guests both checking in and checking out our fear of long delays were not realised. The procedure actually went quite smoothly and we were checked in without any hassle.

The hotel is located at an intersection in the Legian Kelod area, Bali’s famous street shopping renown for bars, restaurants and beaches all within a few minutes’ walk.

As well the hotel is just 30 to 40 minute drive from the Ngurah Rai international airport.

The rooms are decorated in light fresh tones with dark wood furniture, which offers a cooling contrast to the heat of the Bali weather.

The hotel features 321 rooms, all with modern facilities. Some rooms are also equipped with private plunge pools and many have private balconies.

There are 161 Superior units at 28 sqm and 111 Deluxe rooms with balcony at 35 sqm along with two Junior Suites, eight Executive Suites, 20 Family Rooms and 19 Deluxe Rooms with private plunge pools.

We booked into a Deluxe room with balcony and were pleasantly surprised by not only the size of the room but the fittings and fixtures really had a quality feel.

The Mercure Bali Legian has five meeting rooms and offers a range of meeting packages. With a capacity

The Ancak Restaurant is located on the ground floor and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant is situated on the terrace adjacent to the swimming pool and has a great indoor-outdoor feel. Offering fusion food combining both local and international cuisine the Ancak gives a relaxing dining experience.

The Pool’e Bar & Lounge on the fourth floor has a comfortable setting where all can enjoy rooftop swimming along with a wonderful range of cocktails and tapas.

The service at the Mercure Bali Legian is as we would expect of a four star Accor Hotel. I doubt we could find a better example of the friendly and helpful nature of the Balinese people.

We had a great time staying at the Mercure. As we were on a short break the location could not have been better. Not only did we find ourselves handy to the street markets we could have not had a better array of restaurants close at hand.

I could recommend The Mercure Bali Legian whether for a short break with the family or looking at holding a conference.

Sofitel Budapest Chain Bridge – all at home on the Danube We choose the five star Sofitel Budapest Chain Bridge for its location on the left bank of the Danube close to our river cruise departure point.

The La Terrasse Restaurant is located in the Lobby’s atrium and is the perfect place for breakfast, while the Paris Budapest Restaurant is known for its contemporary French & Hungarian cuisine.

As well as proximity to the Viking Cruise jetty, the hotel is a short stroll from the Chain Bridge, the Hungarian parliament and Budapest Castle.

The Sofitel boasts 301 rooms - from classic to club luxury, with 56 suites from junior to imperial. Our room number 305 is a classic and is a surprisingly large room for a city hotel. Along with a king size bed there is a couch that I would expect is a fold out bed, a table and two chairs. The furnishings, while appearing dated and in drab colours doubtless are a reflection of the grand old European style.

The hotel has a lot to offer in the way of conference venues with 17 meeting rooms, catering for up to 340 guests. These range from the Academy Room with the capacity of only 15 to the ballroom holding over 300. All are equipped with the latest technology & lighting.

The room service menu is varied and contains a lot of regional dishes. Two that catch my eye are the Hungarian Traditional Pork Brassoi and the Lilllafured Trout, the trout is butter poached and has a hazelnut crust. I try the Venison Goulash Soup a great dish I recommend.

All the usual Sofitel quality amenities are on hand along with complimentary wifi, tea and coffee-making facilities, safe and mini bar.

The TV quality is very impressive and has a good range of channels.

One of the trendiest bars in Budapest is the Paris Buda-pest Bar located next to the restaurant. This bar is known for its signature cocktails and exceptional wine list.

The service, as with any Sofitel I have stayed in, is extremely efficient. The staff seem to actually enjoy being helpful.

The attention to detail can’t be faulted.

We enjoyed our stay at the Sofitel Budapest Chain Bridge, but I might suggest this may not be a hotel for those who do not like heights. The rooms are built around an atrium so that if guests are on the eighth floor walking to their room they are looking down on the lobby eight floors below.

As well, to get to the eighth floor they ascend in a glass lift.

For those going on a Danube cruise this is the perfect location from which to board their ship. Viking, with whom we were sailing, even has a desk in the lobby.

Although this is classed as a five star hotel I was surprised there was no turn down service in the evening.

For those using an Accorplus card it might pay to check on what to expect as there seems to be a difference between what is offered in Europe and Australasia.

Both check in and check out were effortless. The check-out is automatic. All we have to do is walk out the door. How easy is that?

For those that may like a little flutter there is a casino attached to the hotel.

Air Vanuatu, the launch airline for Airbus A220 in the Pacific Air Vanuatu, the national airline of Vanuatu, became the launch airline for the Airbus A220 with an order for four aircraft.

Air Vanuatu and Airbus signed the order at the Avalon Air Show. Air Vanuatu’s first ever order with Airbus includes two A220-100 series aircraft with 108 seats and two A220-300 series aircraft with 133 seats.

“We’re proud to be the launch airline in the Pacific region for the Airbus A220,” said Air Vanuatu’s chief executive officer Derek Nice.

“These aircraft will be deployed to operate our current international and domestic network, including our newly announced non-stop Melbourne-PortVila service, and will bolster plans to expand our network to new destinations throughout the South Pacific.

Air Vanuatu’s decision to place the Airbus A220 at the centre of its expansion plans will surely keep it one step ahead of the competition,” said Christian Scherer, Airbus chief commercial officer.

The A220’s “superior passenger experience” includes wider seats, more legroom and bigger windows.

Whilst its advanced technology brings much greater fuel efficiency and lower noise levels, demonstrating Air Vanuatu’s commitment to the environment. These aircraft can be economically operated on domestic services, regional routes and into the new long-haul markets that are key to Air Vanuatu’s growth plan.

Code share services also include respectively six and seven weekly flights to New-Caledonia and Fiji in partnership with Aircalin and Fiji Airways, with other connections to Port Moresby and Honiara operated by Air Niugini and Solomon Airlines.

Tackling unruly airline passengers

“Everybody on board is entitled to enjoy a journey free from abusive or other unacceptable behaviour. But the deterrent to unruly behaviour is weak.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is welcomed the entry into force of Montreal Protocol 2014 (MP14) on January 1, 2020.

MP14 enhances the capacity of states to curb the escalation in the severity and frequency of unruly behaviour on board aircraft.

MP14, properly named the Protocol to Amend the Convention on Offences and Certain Other Acts Committed on Board Aircraft, is a global treaty that strengthens the powers of states to prosecute unruly passengers. It closes a legal gap under the Tokyo Convention 1963, whereby jurisdiction over offenses committed on board international flights rests with the state where the aircraft is registered. This causes issues when unruly passengers are delivered to the authorities upon landing in foreign territories.

Unruly and disruptive passenger incidents on board flights include physical assault, harassment, smoking or failing to follow crew instructions. These incidents may compromise flight safety, cause significant delays and operational disruption and adversely impact the travel experience and work environment for passengers and crew.

About 60 percent of offenses go unpunished because of jurisdictional issues. MP14 strengthens the deterrent to unruly behaviour by enabling prosecution in the state where the aircraft lands.

The treaty is in force. But the job is not done. We encourage

more states to ratify MP14 so that unruly passengers can be prosecuted according to uniform global guidelines,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s director general and CEO. States should also review the effectiveness of the enforcement mechanisms available to them in line with ICAO Guidance on Legal Aspects of Unruly and Disruptive Passengers (ICAO Document 10117) which gives information on how civil and administrative fines and penalties can be used to supplement criminal prosecutions.

In addition to strengthening jurisdiction and enforcement, airlines are working on a range of measures to help prevent incidents and manage them more effectively when they do happen.

These include enhanced crew training and raising awareness with passengers of the potential consequences of unruly behaviour on board.

Boeing 777X’s fuselage splits apart during stress test

Boeing 777-9X and 777-8X The relatively good news for Boeing is that because the test failed so explosively at just one percent shy of meeting federal requirements, it will almost certainly not have to do a retest.

Boeing got an unexpected jolt in September, 2019 when engineers in Everett put the new 777X airframe through an extreme test of its structural strength.

Just as the test approached its target stress level, an explosive depressurisation tore through the fuselage.

The test plane is a complete write-off, its fuselage skin ripped wide open just behind the wing.

Airbus rolls out 100th A220 aircraft

The world’s first A220 (formerly called the C Series) was delivered in June, 2016 to A220-100 launch operator SWISS.

Airbus has celebrated the 100th A220 aircraft produced for a customer during a ceremony at the aircraft programme’s headquarters in Mirabel, Canada.

The aircraft, an A220-300, destined for Riga, Latvia-based

airBaltic, features a brand new and comfortable cabin layout with 149 seats plus a modernised livery.

The A220 Family is assembled at Airbus’ main Final Assembly Line in Mirabel and more recently, also at the programme’s second

airBaltic became the A220-300 launch operator when the Latvian airline received delivery of the first ever A220-300 three years ago, on November 28, 2016. airBaltic has since then re-ordered A220-300 plane twice – bringing its firm order to 50 aircraft to become the current biggest European A220 customer.

Singapore to Melbourne with Qantas First Class I have the last seat in First Class, 5F, on this seven hour, 20 minute flight from Singapore to Melbourne aboard one of Qantas’s 12 Airbus A380-800s.

We then proceeded to have a meal served that could only be described as fine dining.

This aircraft I configured to carry 14 passengers in the First class cabin, 64 in Business, 35 in Premium Economy and 371 in its Economy cabin.

We left the gate at Singapore a few minutes late but after travelling 6034 kilometres we landed a few minutes early.

The entertainment system I found to be uncomplicated and easy to operate with a great range of both visual and audio entertainment.

The cabin crew serving the First Class cabin were United Kingdom-based and are outstanding. While on the tarmac they not only serve champagne but also a range of hors d’oeuvres.

The champagne being served is Charles Heidsieck Blanc De Millenaires 2004. The wine list consists of all Australian wines - from Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and Margaret River in Western Australia. As well there is a first class range of spirits and other alcoholic beverages along with a great range of fragrant teas from around the world.

The meal was the highlight of the flight. After the seat belt light was turned off I was asked if I would like to join my wife for dinner. Qantas First Class has only three seats, or should I say cabins, across the width of the A380. On joining my wife I found a seat opposite with a table fully laid out as well as any restaurant.

To start I chose the crab salad with asparagus, pea and sunflower seeds followed by a main of seared sea bass with oyster mushrooms, braised lettuce and Shanghai noodles. Although tempted by the deserts I opted for the cheese board served with accompaniments.

The Qantas Singapore Lounge is rather spread out and it appears to be run by the Accor Hotel group.

A great array of food is available at the buffet, but they also have a cook to order service for mainly Asian foods. We can also help ourselves to beer or wine but there is also a full service bar.

This a well-run lounge has plenty to offer, the service the most attentive I have seen in any lounge. They must have a large staff to customer ratio.

I have flown often in First Class but this is the first time with Qantas. The airline has put together a great package with plenty of room to spread out, great food and wine , and a crew that go the extra mile. Being able to sit and have a meal not only helps the time go by, it gives us the impression of being seated in a restaurant rather than an aircraft at 30,000 feet.

Auckland to Doha in Qatar Airways Q Suite

I call myself a frequent traveller. I qualify this as in the last 12 months I have flown more than 75 International flights - this being fairly much the level of flying I have achieved every year for the past four years.

wine are of a very high standard and you can have what you want when you like from an extensive menu. The entertainment on offer is also extensive and I manage at least one new release movie to kill some time.

These have been in Economy, Premium Economy, Business & one successful points upgrade to First Class.

The walled suite product is private, spacious and the bed comfortable (the extra pillows are always welcome and I appreciate the ‘do not disturb’ sign.

The most recent 75-plus flights have been on over 20 different airlines, mostly long haul. When you are based in New Zealand it is the reality we face when we need to meet new and existing clients who are based globally.

Qatar Airways have, with their Q Suite, taken a significant step towards delivering us the ultimate Business Class product. I say this because effectively I see this as a First Class suite product that is being marketed (and priced) as Business Class.

As customers we are the winners. The service is just what I want - unobtrusive, attentive, pleasant. Food and

I just want to sleep as soon as an 18 or so hour long flight has levelled off after take-off. I eat in the lounge usually and not so much on board. I manage a good 9-10 hours sleep, Yes, I am not kidding.

Having to fly to Europe as often as I do, I really prefer getting as much of the journey done and dusted as soon as possible. Longer flights that get you to where you really want to be are the way forward.

The Qatar Airways network is very extensive, Doha’s Hamad International Airport is very easy to get around, the security check is efficient which is always a help.

Air France Paris to Cork with Air France Hop

This one hour 50 minute flight is operated by the Air France Hop, a regional airline operating flights on behalf of its parent company Air France.

Hop operates 72 Aircraft, the majority being Embraer ERG 145,E170 Or E190. Our flight is aboard the Embraer E190.

As we have booked Business Class seats on a flight without a Business Class section I’m given two seats 1A and 1C. This was a short flight and I had my I Pad and there was also an Air France inflight magazine – so all was catered for in the entertainment department.

Coffee and tea were on offer along with juice beer and white and red wine. The meal was really a light snack and consisted of a quiche, a bread roll which was infused with salmon and a fruit slice. For a flight of this duration this was more than sufficient .

Amazingly we left on time as the bus trip from the terminal to the aircraft must have taken nearly 15

minutes. Having left on time we arrived at Cork a few minutes early.

It’s always the cabin crew that makes or breaks a flight. The crew on this occasion are friendly and helpful. It always amazes me how they serve a meal, drinks and clear the cabin in approximately one hour and still remain cheerful.

The Air France lounge had all the usual amenities.

As this was breakfast time they were serving the usual scrambled eggs, bacon and baked beans. There were other hot dishes on offer along with a good array of bakery items. Tea , coffee and non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks were also readily available.

For a short flight in a foreign country, I found the boarding process and bag drop at the Charles De Gaulle very easy to navigate. The Embraer aircraft is one of my favourites to fly short haul.

With a well set out lounge to relax in before the flight and a great crew on board we enjoyed the Air France HOP experience.

This was followed by visitors from the United Kingdom (19 percent) and the United States (18 percent).

It is the first Middle Eastern country to earn the rights to host the World Championships in Athletics (2019), the first ANOC World Beach Games (2019), FIFA World Cup (2022) and the FINA World Swimming Championships (2023).

Tourism is part of Qatar’s strategy to diversify, and to that end it is continually developing its sports, business events and cruise tourism sectors. Besides a growing number of hospitality options to suit all budgets, Qatar is constantly adding to its list of tourism attractions including museums, indoor and outdoor recreation facilities and a rich calendar of festivals and events throughout the year.

The destination also won the rights to host nine major business events to be held between 2019 and 2023.

Qatar has actively and successfully secured a number of international sporting and business events.

CT: Can you explain the importance of business and sporting events to Qatar?

Over the five-year period between 2014-2019, Qatar’s business events sector has won the rights to host 24 international conferences, attracting more than 10,000 delegates to Qatar. By the end of 2019 Qatar had hosted more than 150 business events for 2019 alone.

Doha Port, where thousands of passengers disembark during the cruise season, offers seamless immigration and customs services. All of these elements form the building blocks of our visitor experience, which we continue to develop and diversify.

CT: The source of visitors is clearly evolving in new directions. Can you quantify the trends and how you are working to both inspire and to meet the challenges?

Qatar’s tourism strategy focuses on diversification: of products, of services and of source markets to guarantee the sector’s sustainability and continued growth. QNTC has made significant efforts in diversifying visitor source markets and promoting Qatar as an attractive tourism destination.

CT: What are the most significant challenges to increasing visitor numbers - and how are these being addressed?

The Qatar National Tourism Council (QNTC) recognises that the number of prospective travellers around the world is growing, but openness and ease of access continue to be a global issue. That’s why we have been working with stakeholders to make Qatar an easily accessible country, and now we proudly offer visa-free entry to almost 90 nationalities, more than any other country in the Middle East. Those who do require a visa can obtain it easily through an online portal.

Our national carrier, Qatar Airways, connects Doha with more than 160 destinations worldwide, and we have instituted a stopover programme that enables those with long layovers to step out and explore the city and enjoy our award-winning hospitality before embarking on the remainder of their journey.

In 2018/ 19, six representative offices were opened in three of the world’s largest visitor source markets - China, India and Russia. We believe strongly in adopting a targetted approach to our visitor source markets, making our offerings relevant to them.

For example, this year, Shop Qatar, a major annual shopping and arts event, will coincide with Chinese New Year, in a nod to that source market.

Cruise tourism is also one of the key focus areas and since its inauguration in 2017, Doha Port has achieved major milestones and is on its way to becoming a major turnaround hub in the region.

The 2018/ 19 cruise season saw 100 percent growth in the number of cruise ships and 110 percent growth in the number of visitors. The 2019/ 20 cruise season is expected to be the largest in Qatar to date, with a total of 248,123 expected visitors (77 percent growth) on 74 cruise ships (66 percent growth).

CT: Clearly there has been significant investment into the tourism infrastructure. Can you quantify this?

Qatar is undergoing an exciting phase of growth and infrastructural development to prepare for FIFA World Cup 2022. Construction of a total of seven purpose-built stadiums, hotels and a state-of-theart metro system is underway.

Several new luxury hotels will be on the market this year including the 21-storey five-star Park Hyatt Hotel in Msheireb Downtown, 47-storey Pullman Doha in West Bay, Al-Najdah and Souq Al-Wakrah hotels from Tivoli Hotels & Resorts, Mandarin Oriental in Msheireb and Zulal Resort.

Qatar is working towards the development of hospitality offerings across all classifications of hotels and hotel apartments, to suit every budget and need.

CT: What do you see as Qatar’s strengths in attracting visitors?

Located an average of seven hours away from many major global cities, Qatar’s award-winning national carrier connects more than 160 destination worldwide to Doha. The country’s visa waiver system allows citizens of more than 80 nationalities to enter Qatar visa-free, making the country the most open in the region according to the UNWTO. Another strength is Qatar’s hospitality sector, which consistently tops rankings for guest experience, and was ranked first in the Middle East, by its 2019 Guest Experience in the Middle East Report, released by hospitality and travel data providers, Olery.

Apart from its easy accessibility, Qatar has much to enchant visitors. It combines traditionalism with modernity, most evident when viewing Doha’s stark skyscrapers from the comfort of a wooden dhow boat.

Stunning architecture illustrates a wider appreciation for the arts and culture. Two of Doha’s most famous buildings are the I.M. Pei designed Museum of Islamic Art, and the Jean Nouvel creation - the National Museum of Qatar, which just opened its doors this year.

Qatar offers a glimpse into Bedouin life and its pearl diving past, with ancient souqs, heritage sites unto themselves, and adventure tours in the desert, where one can see art installation from atop a camel.

CT: How is Qatar striking a balance between tourism expansion and ecological and cultural values?

Our purpose-built stadiums, as well architectural landmarks draw inspiration from local tradition whether the desert-rose inspired National Museum of Qatar by Jean Nouvel, or the Zaha Hadid designed Al Wakrah Stadium, shaped like a pearl in a nod to the country’s past. Infrastructure developments such as the metro are also designed to maintain harmony with the landscape.

Qatar remains rooted in authenticity, offering experiences which seamlessly blend modernity with tradition and allowing visitors a glimpse into a different world. Many of Qatar’s traditions and tourism offerings are nature-based. Camping in the desert is popular amongst locals and visitors alike, and QNTC collaborates with the Ministry of Municipality Environment to ensure Qatar’s desert landscape is protected and preserved during peak tourist season.

CT: What are the main misconceptions people may have about Qatar - and what is being done to counter this?

Qatar is a growing destination on the global tourism landscape, and in a crowded landscape, brand recognition is paramount.

Thanks to our national carrier, most travellers have heard of Qatar, but may not know it represents a sovereign country. A lot of people conflate all the countries in the Middle East, and a common misperception is that all women have to cover, or that they are not allowed to drive.

Qatar National Tourism Council has established offices in international markets to better craft our offering to the intended audience, as we believe that contact is the best way to dismantle myths and build understanding. After all, travel is what helps broaden minds and horizons, and counter misconceptions.

CT: Going forward 10 years - where do you see Qatar? Will tourism still be a dominant player perhaps even more so than today?

The tourism sector globally has outpaced traditional sectors, and with travel easier than ever, this trend is likely to continue.

Qatar has witnessed sustained growth in tourism, ever since identifying it as a priority sector. State of the art infrastructure, legal frameworks and facilitation services help lay the ground-work for greater investment in tourism and related fields.

Qatar is very cognizant of sustainability, and in aligning with our cultural values.

Qatar has long tickled our curiosity. This little peninsula from which Al Jazeera broadcasts and which borders Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf enjoys the highest per capita income in the world - along with the planet’s third largest deposits of oil and gas.

Here things are not done by halves. During our visit early November, 2019, this tiny sovereign state was building six new stadiums and a complete metro system in preparation for the FIFA World Cup in 2022. As well, an armada of new five star hotels were under construction and Hamad International Airport in Doha was launching a massive expansion.

Already ranked as the fourth best airport in the world at the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2019, the airport is growing to accommodate the increasing demand from global travellers.

Despite a economic and diplomatic blockade

by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates Qatar is flourishing and remains a significant power in the Arab world. Doha is home to the international Media network, Al Jazeera.

Of the population of 2.6 million, just 12 percent are Qatari. After Ottoman rule from 1871 until 1915, Qatar became a British protectorate in 1916.

The Japanese cultured pearl development in the 1920 destroyed Qatar’s previously important pearl diving industry. The discovery of oil and gas

deposits in 1940 led to a dramatic new wealth for the country - Qatar now being the world’s leading exporter of liquified natural gas.

Like many travellers, our first experience of Qatar is with the national carrier. And if Qatar Airways is to be the benchmark for what lies ahead then we are in for a very special experience.

We have read and written about Qatar Airways’ QSuite so now it is time to experience this ‘game changing’ Business Class travel.

And so to Auckland International to await the near 18-hour flight to Doha.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1 Two very pleasant coincidences occur as a prelude to this much-anticipated flight. Firstly I hear my name called after exiting security and meet my son-inlaw Teo, an ex-London police officer now working in security at Auckland International.

After a few minutes swapped notes, Teo returns to checking exiting travellers and I head to the lounge in preparation for my flight to Doha.

At the lounge I run into Paul Schoffelmeer, our Travel Editor, who unbeknown to me is booked on the same flight.

As one of the most travelled inhabitants of the planet, Paul is off to the London Travel Exhibition.

I question him about Qatar Airways new QSuite and he is effusive, announcing it as a ‘game changer,’ a supreme product at a very reasonable cost that will have business travellers making Doha their passage to Europe over more traditional routes.

Once on board and introduced to my own little slice of heaven (haven) within QSuite, it is impossible to disagree.

The ingeniously designed cabins, that can be linked for couples, provide a previously unheard of level of Business Class luxury and privacy. As Paul comments: “These would be First Class on any other airline.”

As well as the big screen TV, a control panel within easy reach that has all electrical connections needed, storage bins and alcoves, the door slides closed for absolute privacy for work, sleep or socialising.

We are blessed with a delightful cabin crew, a happy team who clearly love their vocation. The interaction is personal and genuine, everything with a smile, whether it’s wine or dining recommendations or enquiring when we’d like the bed made up.

Like most Kiwis I’d sufficiently recovered from the All Black loss at the Rugby World Cup a week earlier to be keen on backing the men in black against Wales. Sadly the game is scheduled for while we were in the sky.

Never fear, Qatar Airways wifi is put to the test. We are allowed one hour free or US$10 for the whole 17-hour flight. We buy the whole flight package and cross fingers that we can stream from satellites sharing the heavens with us on this long haul to Doha.

What a delightful surprise to turn on the laptop at the schedule kick-off time and being able stream the entire match, glitch-free, from the Qatar Airways system while at 38,000 feet. Perhaps this shouldn’t have been such a surprise as, at this altitude, we must be almost next door neighbours to the satellites providing the feed.

Decorum dictates muffled clapping and a complete ban on jubilant bellowed applause in deference to fellow travellers, most blissfully lost in sleep.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2 We lose count of the time zones crossed on the near 18-hour flight to Doha but feel surprisingly fresh when checking in to the Mondrian Hotel in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The short ride from the airport is marked by balmy temperatures in the high 20s and entertaining highway antics of young jockeys on high-powered motorcycles, their desire to trigger their machine’s rev limiters producing a distinctive night-time howl.

The Mondrian is a striking new five star hotel in the new part of Doha. In a city seemingly run by contract workers from other countries, we are driven to the hotel by a cheerful bloke from Ghana, checked in by an efficient eastern European lady and guided to our room by Toni, a charmingly young fellow from Kyrgyzstan.

We later learn that there are 85 nationalities working in Qatar on one or two visas. They outnumber Qataris by six to one.

Our confused body clock refuses to co-operate so there is little sleep prior to our 9am meeting with Discover Qatar for a cultural walking tour.

Nabish, from Sri Lanka, is the perfect guide. He has learned his craft well and recites all the answers to our questions without a stutter. He patiently spells difficult names, provides facts and figures to the decimal point. Equally importantly, he recognises

a jet lagged traveller when he meets one - and adjusts the tour to suit.

For the record, Qatar occupies a peninsula covering a total just 11,521 square kilometres. Of the country’s population of 2.6 million, almost of a million reside in Doha.

The country is ruled by a 130-year-old monarchy, the current ruler being Sheikh Thameem Bin Hamad Al Thani.

A visit to the Msheireb Museums provides a very graphic journey to modern Qatar, marked by the dramatic discovery of oil and gas in 1939.

Using spectacular theatre multi-media displays, we make the painful transition with the indigenous Qatari, previously fishermen and pearl divers, as they overnight become drill site workers, separated from their families in harsh desert conditions and often exploited by large foreign oil companies.

Such was their sad transition inland from an idyllic seaside existence.

Unsurprisingly, there is a very strong anti-slavery message throughout the museum’s many presentations.

Nabish then guides us through the colourful souk marketplace where trade appears little changed spices and delicacies from around the Middle East, textile and fabrics, tailors at work, artists crafting on canvas or in sculpture form.

Restaurants surrounding the souk offer truly international options - from Lebanese to Turkish and Iranian fare. Huge outdoor air conditioning units pump cool air toward diners. Our visit in November means we’ve missed the summer heat that can hit 55 degrees or higher, but the temperature still hovers in the mid 30s.

Creatures of the desert are much loved and admired by the Qatari. A corral of camels is remarkable for the fact that they have no shade or water, such is their hardy nature. Horses, by contrast, are housed in cooled stables, with ample water and large cooking fans.

Nearby we see a Falcon auction house, where top birds can fetch upwards of 5000 riyal (about US$1400).

Just a few metres away is the Souq Waqif Falcon Hospital to attend to these valuable aviators.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 3 Today we are to take a desert safari to the inland sea, not far from the Saudi Arabian border. It’s a late start that will finish long after the famed desert sundown so this morning we take a walk from the Mondrian Hotel to explore a little of this new area of Doha.

All seems so quiet, few people out and about and traffic is light. It seems that Qataris don’t venture out until late, a pattern born of their need to avoid the heat of the day during summer.

We meet Asu, our desert guide from Discover Qatar at

2pm and set out for the hour-long drive to the desert.

Our equipment for day is that worldwide standard when tackling extreme terrain - the Toyota Landcruiser.

Asu explains that highway ride to the sand is not a long journey as Qatar, a small peninsula protruding into the Arabian Sea, is geographically petit - just 200 kilometres from north to south.

We are heading south through an unfolding landscape of 2022 Football World Cup preparations. All around are stadia construction sites. There will be seven new venues, the largest having an 80,000-seat capacity.

Interestingly some of smaller stadia - with around 40,000 seats - will be constructed in a manner that will enable them to be dismantled and exported.

Qatar has clearly applied very smart planning to this massive event. Understanding the waste that would result in keeping massive structures that would experience little or no use after the World Cup, the country is also applying a novel approach to the challenge of accommodating the tens of thousands of supporters.

While hotel construction proceeds to match stadium builds, huge numbers in 2022 will be accommodated in chartered cruise ships or in desert camps that would later be developed as new tourism attractions.

As we press further south, the green of Doha turns to desert, with increasing signs of Qatar’s oil and gas wealth - refineries, towers emitting burn off flames,

construction and heavy machinery. A roadside sign near one refinery warns that photography is banned.

Here it is clear that while the Landcruiser is the king of light transport, Mercedes Benz’s trucks are the heavyweight champions.

At the edge of the desert we stop to let air from the Landcruiser tyres - from 35 to just 15 PSI - to provide better traction in the soft, shifting sand.

In a convoy of four, the Discover Qatar Landcruisers swoop, dive and climb through huge waves of sand. It feels like boating in a heavy sea. Thankfully no-one is seasick. We are impressed at the capability of the Toyotas but later learn our drivers are giving us an easy ride, that far more extreme manoeuvres are possible.

At the inland sea we simultaneously enjoy a desert sunset and receive a message from Vodafone welcoming us to Saudi Arabia, unmistakable evidence that we are close to the border. Asu confirms that the landscape across the water is, in fact, Saudi Arabia.

Back at the Montrian long after dark, we prepare for a new day and new adventures – a visit to two world-leading operations - Qatar Airways freight business, with cargo ranging from Formula 1 cars to invaluable race horses and the massive catering operation that each day must deliver consistently exquisite meals for travellers in the sky.

So, I would say our top priority would definitely be maintaining our winning position and continuing to deliver the best airline experience,” explains Qatar Airways’ senior manager for Australasia, Adam Radwanski.

“The airline business is very complex. What the customer can see and experience while sitting on the aircraft or transferring via an airport between connecting flights is the hard work of thousands of people at any given time and location.

“Let’s take Qatar Airways flights between Auckland and Doha that was launched two-and-a-half years ago. At that time, it was the world’s longest flight. To launch a service like this, we not only had to have the right aircraft to make the distance but also we had to design the entire service around this flight, hire and train people, as well as review and rewrite some processes.”

Radwanski said this process included things like designing the most optimal

“These awards have definitely gained us a lot of attention but it also means all eyes are on us to perform.” flight path while ensuring crew welfare; selecting onboard food and beverage best suitable for a 17-hour flight; securing local partners in New Zealand such as ground handlers, catering, cleaning and aircraft security suppliers; hiring local sales and support staff; and building sales and distribution network.

“All of these had to be done in accordance to very strict local and global regulations that govern international aviation. Having said that, at Qatar Airways, we are well accustomed to such challenges, being one of the fastest growing airlines in the world.

The airline opens many new destinations each year and we have highly professional and dedicated teams that support each other to ensure each newly launched route is a success.”

Corporate Traveller posed the following questions: CT: How do you anticipate this growth pattern will develop over the next decade?

Air travel was once a luxury but has since become a popular consumer product. The more recent IATA report forecasts that by 2037, the world’s air passenger number will double, with 3.2 billion new travellers added. Also, according to the same IATA report, Asia-Pacific will be the fastest growing aviation market for decades to come, with average annual growth rate of 4.8 percent, followed by Africa (4.6 percent) and Middle East (4.4 percent). This represents tremendous opportunities for airlines, but also some threats.

CT: What are the world “hotspots” in terms of expected growth?

In general, I think we will see growth taking two paths: One that is about growing traditional markets that are both strong business and leisure destinations such as London, Paris, Rome, and New York. They’re all vibrant economic epicentres with also a great appeal to the leisure segment, specifically to the newer and less travelled customers that will enter these markets in the next two decades.

The other area for growth is in the secondary markets, where advancements in aircraft technology and also airport infrastructure allow for greater connectivity.

Great examples of such secondary markets are Mykonos, Malta, Malaga, Helsinki, Zagreb in Europe, or Zanzibar in Tanzania or Salalah in Oman.

These secondary markets offer unique, off-thebeaten-track experiences, especially for welltravelled customers who seek something new. This is also where Qatar Airways sees tremendous growth opportunity and where we invest heavily in our network development to meet the current and future demand for these secondary city experiences.

CT: What inspired Qsuite? Can you describe the thinking behind it?

The thinking behind Qsuite was to create the ultimate customisable travel experience, enabling passengers to create an environment that suits their own unique needs.

The product was developed based on some First Class cabin features like individual suite with privacy panel and double bed. It offers three different types of flying experience for solo traveller, couple and a group of friends.

For solo, QSuite offers great privacy with personal space while couples can sit together in their very

own suite with a double bed. The quad configuration creates a space for colleagues, friends or families to work, dine and socialise together. The moveable panels then allow them to switch to a private cabin so the space is fully adaptable to requirements.

CT: Any other new developments can you share with our readers - such as cabin design, business communications, entertainment, ease of transit?

We’ve had several exciting developments this year. Aside from the new Qsuite service being launched in Auckland, we have launched our Quisine dining service for economy class passengers, with redesigned menu cards, a pre-dinner drinks option on flights of more than five hours, bigger food portions and a focus on the use of local, fresh and healthy ingredients.

As an airline, we aim to cater for various demographics.

We’re focused on attracting customers who want to travel in comfort, and expect the highest quality of service, whether they’re families, solo travellers, or business groups.

CT: From an Australasian viewpoint, is your service via Doha being developed as an alternative pathway to Europe?

Most of our passengers travelling out of Australia and New Zealand are headed to Europe, so this is the pathway we focus on promoting. We want Qatar Airways and the Doha stopover to be the first choice for passengers travelling from this region to a city in Europe. Therefore we aim to provide exceptional deals for European destinations to Australasian travellers.

We also want to promote Doha as a destination for travellers who are stopping over on the way to Europe. We’re offering visa-free entry for 80 nationalities, including New Zealanders, to stay up to four nights in one of Doha’s four or five-star hotels, from just US$23 per night. There also currently huge savings available on Doha flights and tours as part of the Summer in Qatar campaign.

CT: What’s your biggest cost for doing business?

Is it fuel? How does what’s happening in the oil market impact your profit?

Fuel cost does contribute to a big portion of our operating cost but the fuel cost rise is something faced by the entire aviation industry in general. So at Qatar Airways we are continuing to go from strength to strength, focusing on growing the business as a whole by innovating and improving on our product offerings. In Doha, at the headquarters of the world’s No 1 cargo airline – Qatar Airways – Corporate Traveller is granted special access into this intriguing world where everything from rhubarb to rhinoceros are shipped with equal, meticulous care.

Peter Penseel, senior vice president cargo sales and network planning, tells us that achieving No 1 status was not an end point.

“For us this was a starting point. If you stop then you stop being creative. I always tell my team that No 1 is nice – but now it starts. It is much easier to stay No 1 than to become No 1. I always say to my teams we must be as humble as if we’re No 15 rather than having an attitude because the market with punish you quicker than you think.

An interesting fact regarding the DohaAuckland link is that the flight to Auckland can carry 10 tonnes but just four tonnes on the way back because of the head winds.

“Yes, people go with their cars on holiday. That’s an interesting part of our business but we also do Moto GP, Super Bikes, Formula 1. To move the Formula 1 fleet requires six or seven freighters - 747s and 777s.

“We believe that with the investment that the company is providing that we are on the right track . We have the right aircraft mix, we have the right network - a network not created by us but by the needs of our customers. If we can add value to what they expect from us we will be the supplier of choice.

“Our competitors may say it is easy for Middle Eastern airlines to be on top because money comes from the tap. That is not the case. There must be return on investment. The choice of the customer determines whether you’re doing a good job – because they have choices.

“A big portion of our total global cargo volumes - about 50 percent - is on the passenger aircraft.

That network is determined by the needs of passengers. We purchased our full cargo aircraft as supplementary to our passenger network.”

Oatar Airways flies to 167 passenger destinations with 66 dedicated freighter destinations. The airline has 28 freighters - 21 Boeing 777s, five A330s and two 747s. In 2020 they will add another five 777s. An interesting fact regarding the Doha-Auckland link is that the flight to Auckland can carry 10 tonnes but just four tonnes on the way back because of the head winds.

We are a major supplier for equestrian events and carry a lot of horses around the world.

“We are a major supplier for equestrian events and carry a lot of horses around the world. Special horse stalls, state of the art with their own grooms. The grooms join those expensive horses during the flight.

Some of our aircraft are equipped to take up to 12 grooms. This gives the owners reassurance that the special needs of the horses are catered for even in the air. The horses get red carpet treatment. They don’t walk on the tarmac. They have a special rolled out foam so they don’t slip.

CT: Can you track for us the growth of cargo for the airline over the last five years - in terms of numbers of aircraft and tonnes of freight carried?

Over the last five years, there has been double digit growth in the freight transported by Qatar Airways Cargo. In financial year 2018/ 19 alone, we flew 1,452,000 tonnes of cargo. New belly-hold aircrafts and freighters are being added to the fleet each year.

Today, our fleet comprises of more than 250 aircraft including 28 dedicated freighters.

CT: In terms of products being flown, such as fresh produce, what are the growth areas of your cargo operations?

We are growing our products further, including the special commodities QR Pharma, QR Live and QR Fresh from New Zealand. We carry a wide variety of perishables, chilled meat, pharmaceuticals as well as day old chicks and hatching eggs to Europe.

CT: Geographically, where are the growth areas for you?

We transport cargo to a global network of more than 160 destinations including over 60 freighter destinations. In 2018/ 19, our top five import destinations have been Doha, Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam and Chicago. The top five export origins were Hong Kong, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Dhaka & Chicago.

CT: Can you explain technology and system advances you have made to handle cargo efficiently and economically?

In today’s air freight business, it is all about speed and visibility of the cargo processes and handling that are an important aspect to enhance the customer experience.

We are always looking at innovative ways to simplify and automate the tasks so that it ultimately benefits the end user, our customers.

Our state-of-the-art cargo warehouse is fully automated, capable of handling 1.4 million tonnes of cargo annually.

For our freighter fleet, we have set up the world’s only Freighter Centralised Load Control Centre, where all freighter load plans and load sheets are produced with a high level of automation to improve safety and ensure fuel optimisation and carbon reduction.

We have also made significant progress in electronic air waybill (e-AWB) and e-freight, 99 percent e-AWB in Doha and 85 percent in our network. The Air Waybill (AWB) is a critical air cargo document that constitutes the contract of carriage between the ‘shipper’ and the ‘carrier’ (airline). With the introduction of electronic air waybill, there is no longer a need to print, handle or archive the paper air waybill, largely simplifying the air cargo process.

CT: Passengers most likely have little knowledge that their flight is shared with cargo. How many tonnes of cargo share a typical passenger flight?

Are there restrictions on what types of freight can be carried on a passenger flight?

The tonnage of cargo depends on the type of aircraft and the length or distance of the sector.

There is a significant amount of cargo that we can uplift on a passenger aircraft, for example the Airbus A350-1000 has the capacity to transport close to 19 tonnes of cargo on each flight, while the Boeing 777LR flight can carry close to 14 tonnes per flight.

We carry most types of freight on the lower deck of passenger flights such as cars, animals, pharmaceuticals, fresh produce, flowers, electronics, valuables, general cargo etc.

Throughout our fleet, we have temperaturecontrolled cargo holds and can carry cargo as per our customer’s requirements.

On the passenger fleet, we restrict the carriage of cargo that needs to be accessible during the flight.

This type of cargo is only flown on the main deck of a freighter. Furthermore, certain types of batteries and all oversized shipments are restricted from carriage on passenger flights.

CT: How many aircraft comprise the Qatar Airways dedicated freight fleet? Any changes ahead in fleet numbers and types of new aircraft?

We have a large cargo fleet comprising of 21 Boeing 777, two Boeing 747-8 and five Airbus A330 freighters. We also have belly-hold cargo fleet of 250 passenger aircraft.

Our new order for five Boeing 777 freighters placed at the Paris Air Show in June ,2019 will start arriving from April 2020 onwards. The passenger fleet is also growing as new aircraft are added every month.

CT: Tell us about some of the more interesting, perhaps challenging cargo requests you’ve had to handle?

We carry different types of cargo all over the world and every day is exciting in the world of cargo.

One of the challenging shipments I can recall is when the illegal blockade was imposed on Qatar on June 5, 2017. In the first few months, we had to transport 4000 heifers (pregnant cows) into Doha from various origins in United States and Europe. We had vets and load masters on board to monitor temperature, humidity and the animals’ wellbeing during the long flight, ensuring that the cows reached their new home safely.

Last year, we transported a special guest, Eric the rhino from San Diego Zoo to his natural habitat in the Western Serengeti. This movement required close coordination with the specialists and caretakers of Eric.

We also did a special Boeing 747-8 full charter for MotoGP bikes from Kuala Lumpur to Barcelona last month.

We have handled many offline relief flights to provide aid for victims of natural disasters. Relief shipments are always challenging as flying safely into such areas requires close coordination between everyone in the team and also working against the clock to provide the much-needed help in difficult to reach areas.

CT: We understand you have wealthy travellers who like to take their Lamborghinis along on their holiday?

London is the most preferred destination for customers to transport their cars from Doha. Having said that, we also transport cars to other destinations like Paris, Geneva, Zurich, Los Angeles, Houston, Narita, Muscat, Kuwait, Amman, Beirut and Karachi to name a few.

The movements are year-round but peaks during the summer time between June - August.

CT: Is air freight becoming more competitive price-wise?

The greatest advantage of air freight is speed and so the commodities shipped by air usually have high values per unit and are very time-sensitive. Example pharmaceuticals, electronics, fast fashion, consumer goods, perishables etc.

Our customers are of course sensitive to price but they pay attention to the quality of the service, the delivery time and more recently to the capability of carriers to provide quotations very quickly through a large variety of channels in order to be able to book their shipments immediately.

CT: Do you actively pursue cargo that was traditionally sea freight?

Air freight is not competing directly with other means of transport because it guarantees much faster delivery, and this is reflected in the cost which is higher than sea freight.

This jolly Austrian welcomes Corporate Traveller to QACC’s massive operation in Doha with a delectable sample tasting of some of the latest menu highlights being introduced to Qatar Airways passengers.

Winner pats his own stomach in explaining that it was his own love of food that inspired him to take on such a daunting challenge.

QACC prepares an average of 175,000 meals and 60 international cuisines per day in its state-of-the-art kitchen for airline carriers, lounges, various coffee shops and cafeterias. Spanning an extraordinary 69,000 square metres, QACC is one of the world’s largest self-contained catering facilities in the world.

CT: What floor area are we talking about?

QACC’s floor plan is 69,000 sq m, spread over three levels, one third of the facility being dedicated to the food production and assembly of the meals, the other two thirds are used for our stores, washing, laundry, delivery and logistic operations.

CT: How many people work here?

QACC currently employs 3,500 employees. This includes production, operations, and support functions.

CT: Preparing superb cuisine that is to be consumed hours later in the upper atmosphere must come with enormous challenges? Can you detail some of these?

Yes, preparing fresh, high quality meals in large volumes and serving them at altitude does come with many challenges from sourcing to quality control and distribution. To meet these challenges requires a lot of planning, attention to detail and the ability to respond dynamically to last minute changes.

QACC is the first organisation in the world to achieve ISO22000:2018, confirming our Food Safety Management System meets the highest global standards.

To achieve this certification, we have put in place many control mechanisms to ensure our meals are of the utmost quality when served to our guests. We thoroughly monitor all the preparation and delivery processes with our team of chefs and our quality assurance team from the moment the raw materials enter our premises until the finished meals are delivered to our customers.

CT: Can you give our readers an idea of the massive quantities of food you source and prep each day?

QACC prepares an average of 175,000 meals and 60 international cuisines per day. To achieve these numbers, we transform around 70 tons of fresh fruits and vegetables, 3.5 tons of fresh chicken breast, two tons of fresh eggs and 2,200 litres of dairy products into final consumable products. QACC also produces 50.000 fresh croissants and more than 50,000 bread rolls fresh every day. All together on a daily basis we produce approximately 500,000 single portions of food to be assembled and enjoyed in flight.

CT: How do you manage your fresh food-only policy?

with many suppliers all over the world. In so doing, we ensure that both local and global supply networks are tapped into for the freshest produce available.

We have multiple sourcing and buying agents who relentlessly scout the market for top quality sustainable products.

CT: This must come with considerable challenges.

It does indeed, hence the reason why we have a 24hour purchasing response team to ensure that our supply chain is never interrupted and that QACC is always in a position to deliver the best products.

CT: How has the blockade of Qatar affected this?

QACC as well as the State of Qatar initially had its share of challenges due to the blockade. However, we have been able to embrace the challenges and overcome them. Our local partners have invested in growing and modernising their production methods which has helped us to massively reduce our carbon footprint and increase the quality of our raw products with the distance and time between harvest to consumption significantly reduced.

For example, the local mushroom farms have worked with us to produce mushrooms to a specific size to guarantee even cooking, local vegetable farms produce our tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers to

agreed weights and sizes and a local salmon smoker cures and smokes their fish to our specifications helping us to ensure our customers experience consistent high-quality meals on board.

CT: Working with the cabin crews must be vital. Can you explain the process of ensuring they cook and present dishes?

It is crucial that QACC and cabin crew department work closely together to ensure an excellent service delivery of our dishes. We provide cabin crew with guidelines and training to ensure meals are cooked and plated to perfection on board.

CT: Also, how important is their feedback?

Cabin crew and passengers’ feedback is extremely important and forms part of the menu planning as QACC considers each single comment that we receive.

We analyse all the information gathered from the feedback and use this data to improve our products and service to suit the ever-changing needs of our customers.

CT: How often do you change menus?

We update our menus every three months to meet the needs of our customers. QACC’s product development team regularly studies the latest food trends and

is constantly working on new ideas to provide our customers with a wide array of the latest products.

CT: I believe you told me you also have 110 other caterers around the world prepping for you. Can you explain the procedure after a new menu is written to ensure quality and consistency?

Once a new menu has been approved, we send it to our caterers around the world for them to review. We then proactively schedule a presentation to ensure the meals they are producing meet our requirements.

We also perform random checks after the menu has been presented either when we off load incoming planes or we send our chefs to their units to ensure that they maintain quality as per our requirements.

Additionally, customer and crew feedback give us the opportunity to find trends either positive or negative so we can intervene and make amends or changes if required.

CT: Can you explain some of your mantras that you mentioned - such as “see something, say something,” or “we don’t get pressure to save money, we get pressure to achieve top quality?”

“See something, say something” relates to our safety philosophy. QACC encourages all its stakeholders to promote a safe work environment and to be part of our pursuit of excellence in everything we do. This is

People of Palliser The people factor is core to Palliser’s success.

Founding managing director, Richard Riddiford, retired in 2015 and passed away after a short illness in 2016. A legend of the New Zealand wine industry, Riddiford was the instigator of initiatives that include Toast Martinborough, the Family of Twelve and the Pinot Noir conferences.

He left things in good hands and heart though, appointing self-titled “girl from the Wairarapa” Pip Goodwin as Palliser Estate CEO when he stepped down. Pip, an accountant by trade and winemaker herself, worked alongside Richard for over a decade before taking up the invitation from Riddiford to lead the team and begin the next chapter of the Palliser story.

Alongside Goodwin is Guy McMaster, who became Palliser’s chief winemaker earlier this year. Palliser’s winemaker and viticulturist since 2016, his passion for organics, fresh perspective and approach to winemaking signal a new era at the winery.

“Our philosophy is about nurturing soil life, which in turn nurtures the vines. With the fruit, it’s having the patience and faith to leave it be and minimise the distortion that human hands create,” says McMaster.

Like Goodwin, the region is also “home” for Palliser’s assistant winemaker Haidee Johnson. As 2018 North Island Young Winemaker of the Year, Haidee has

come back to work with McMaster and, as she says, “make (and drink) the best wine in New Zealand”.

“Guy’s energy, drive and ‘must be fun’ attitude to making wine heralds an exciting time in our journey and our wine. We’re enjoying having the freedom to play, to just see where things can go and what’s possible.”

With the fruit, it’s having the patience and faith to leave it be and minimise the distortion that human hands create.

Under McMaster’s guidance, a small and dedicated Palliser vineyard crew meticulously tend the vines year round, in all elements, to ensure vine health and fruit quality is optimal. The often-unsung heroes of the team, like the early Wairarapa pioneers, they are people of the land who know what hard work is.

Palliser people epitomise the Kiwi spirit of getting stuck in and giving things a go. Today, they’re proud of the fact that they are still 100 percent Kiwi owned by a small number of gutsy, loyal and passionate New Zealanders who are taking their wine to the world and showing just what they can do.

Journey to 100 percent organic Starting with a single vineyard, Om Santi, more vineyards were planted as demand for the region’s wine grew. Palliser now has six vineyards across

74 hectares on the Martinborough Terraces but still consider themselves very much boutique producers.

Knowing how important the land is to the wine they make, they see their role as kaitiaki or guardians of the land as critical to their success.

“If we are good to it, it is good to us”, explains Goodwin. “We’re proud to have led the charge to adopt sustainable vineyard and winemaking practices back in the early 1990s. We were the first winery to become ISO accredited in 1996. It was a logical step to build on that, so we’ve recently converted three of our best vineyards to organic management. The Winery block and Wharekauhau (converted 2017) are expected to achieve BioGro organic certification in 2020 and Om Santi (converted 2018) in 2021. We’re also working hard to convert the remaining vineyards to 100 percent organic by 2025.”

In McMaster’s view: “Converting to organic production is for us a non-negotiable step in making authentic wines that truly speak of the land and express their sense of place.”

“If we are good to it, it is good to us” The cellar door An irresistible attraction for those visiting Martinborough, Palliser’s award-winning cellar door has a great selection of wines - including the Single Vineyard range - for tasting and sale, including some wines only available there. The knowledgeable team, enthusiastically led by the very charming Clementine Cornu who hails from France, will happily take visitors through the wines, and the generous pours and spectacular setting make it a lovely place to spend an hour or two on a typically sunny, still Wairarapa afternoon.

The cellar door was refurbished in 2018 and new tasting and food experiences introduced. Visitors can now journey beyond the cellar door with a guided winery tour and see how Palliser wines are crafted, or visit the barrel hall and enjoy a tasting straight from a selection of barrels before heading to an underground cellar for a private tasting of current release wines. If visiting as a group, visitors can arrange a private tasting, with a wine and cheese pairing also on offer.

It’s clear that Pip Goodwin, Guy McMaster and the team at Palliser are honouring the past but looking to the future, not only in the way they continue to craft their wine but also by moving forward into new territory with the same intrepid style shown by their founders.

focus is the huge boxer engine – physically much larger in size than the 500cc version used in the homage show bike, and designed to make a real statement.

The characterful spoked wheels have been chosen (21” front and 18” rear) to match the considerable proportions and the overall stance of this latest show bike, to exude attitude and presence. The modified front end and fishtail exhaust contribute to its custom, hand-made feel.

Low and long, raked out and understated, the Concept R18 is a thing of beauty, with its polished aluminium cylinder covers, subtle colour treatment to the motor, tear drop tank and fork, and areas of pin-striping with golden yellow effect in the deep, layered paint treatment.

There are only three metal surface treatments used – either blasted, painted or polished – in order to give a clean, authentic atmosphere around the bike, while the iconic Metzeler-branded RILLE tyres have a custom-made tread pattern and special colour treatment on the sidewalls.

Without a doubt these talented enthusiasts – many of whom ‘chop’ bikes in their spare time – have certainly made good on the promise initially shown with the unveiling of the R5 Hommage in 2016, exactly 80 years after the legendary sports boxer made its debut.

For this segment though you need a big motor, so if the 500cc unit of the original R5 doesn’t cut it (by modern standards) then the biggest motorcycle boxer engine of all time certainly does.

Absolute, pure essentials Clearly an exciting bridge between the aforementioned homage bike and the forthcoming series production motorcycle, the Concept R18 has presence, attitude and promise in equal measures. The undoubted

Anyone familiar with BMW bikes from the 1950s will recognise the Pagusa-style seat, with embossed logo and hammered area on the leather.

Instead of the air-cooling of yore, this engine is air and oil cooled, and fed by dual Solex carbs instead of fuel injection. The unit is supported in the kind of round-edged cradle frame one can trace all the way back to the R5 from the 1930s.

The block and transmission housing are made of bead-blasted aluminium, contrasting with the handpolished belt guard and valve covers. An exposed, chrome-plated driveshaft running to the rear hub is the kind of historical touch that should be etched with the phrase, “When Men Were Men.” Since the R18 concept’s philosophy is leaving out anything superfluous, the only electronics to be found work the starter and the lights. A cantilever spring strut hides beneath the minimalist leather seat. A ‘U’ pattern graces the headlight glass, just as with historic units, but this one goes for LEDs instead of halogen.

The only ornamental item on the bike is the paintwork. The teardrop tank and fork are bathed in black, overlaid with a yellow-gold metallic varnish and white, hand-applied pinstripes.

At the moment this is a pre-production concept machine but we should see it in production in the second half of 2020.

Vespa’s new electric baby – saving the planet in style When it comes to deep roots within the scooter world, it’s hard to beat Piaggio’s Vespa family. The Elettrica’s visage is straight out of post-war Italy with a mug that first saw the light of day in 1946.

An aircraft landing gear acts as the front suspension to leave the right side of the wheel completely unobstructed thus launching that old-school look going right out of the gate. The leg guard section is boomerang-shaped in profile, and on the face we find that classic “necktie” detail the only adornment up front, unless we count the recessed turn signals as such.

Up top, the handlebar fairing cleans up the control area and acts as a housing for the classic cyclops headlight and digital instrument panel. A 4.3-inch TFT screen takes care of all the instrumentation, and through the miracle of Bluetooth wireless connectivity and the Vespa Mia system, the Elettrica will network with our smart phone to allow us to answer calls, check messages and pipe in our tunes, all on the fly and without removing our hands from the controls.

The display itself has four levels of brightness and an ambient-light sensor detects the available light and adjusts the screen automatically.

There is a GPS function that comes with the app.

We can always find our scoot with our smart phone whether we’re lost in a parking lot, or someone has relieved us of your two-wheeled pride and joy. We can then pay them a visit in person - I mean call the police.

A short tunnel interrupts the step-through, but the factory gives it a flat top complete with a non-skid finish.

The footwells are similarly treated, and the passenger area comes with the addition of a rubber block upon which they can hook their heels and be able to relax a little bit.

Toward the front, the seat narrows down almost to a point so as to give our thighs a break when we

deploy our ‘Fred Flintstones’. Under the seat is an abbreviated dry storage area that will hold only a single full-face helmet due to encroachment by the on-board charger, which mounts its own pigtail so we can plug in just about anywhere.

Out back, a stylised tail light and recessed turn signals finish out the rearward lighting with a short mudguard extension/plateholder to round out the spray containment. All-in-all, the quintessential ‘wasp.’

It’s a stressed-skin monocoque assembly that uses the body panels for structure in lieu of any sort of underframe business. Nothing new for this marque, that’s for sure.

There’s a disc up front and a regenerativebraking mechanism out back that works with the drum to slow the scoot while it converts a portion of the kinetic energy back into electrical energy.

Naturally, the real magic in this charming little scooter lies in the drivetrain. We can run the four kW electric motor in two different power modes - Power or Eco - each with its own power-drain rate and performance profile. ‘Eco’ limits top speed to around 30 kph and it’s in this mode that we’ll see the 100 km range. Turn it on ‘Power’ and unleash a whopping 147.5 pound-feet of torque.

Electrical power is stored in a 4.2 kWh lithium-ion battery that can last at least 10 years and/or 1000 charging cycles with a guaranteed maximum range of at least 100,000 kms.

With New Zealand’s 240-volt mains power at the wall, we can plug right in and slam a charge from empty to full in just four hours through the on-board charger, so the Elettrica is clearly geared toward an urban market.

Speaking of gears, there ain’t any, not in the traditional sense anyway - just a 15:1 reduction direct drive that delivers silent power to the 11-inch rear wheel.

Oh, and because it’s electric, it was easy to bless it with a reverse function that won’t diminish the forward performance and make parking easier.

So the traditional Vespa virtues, style and quality are taken into the zero emissions electric future.

Surely there has never been a more stylish way to save the planet.

Husqvarna’s Black Arrow flies right on target Svartpilen translates to ‘black arrow,’ and has, in the current naming philosophy of Husqvarna, been used to label the more scrambler-styled machines. This time it’s more a tracker scrambler with hardware paying homage to flat track.

It’s not a full-on repli-racer but rather a simple and modern take. Upright seating, pulled-back handlebars, and a side number plate talk the talk, but also walk the walk.

Sharing much of the underpinnings as the café-style Vitpilen, the tracker-inspired Svartpilen is powered by a dual-counterbalanced 692.7cc single tucked tightly within a steel tubular trellis frame. This 75-hp (claimed), KTM-developed LC4 engine is used in a bevy of machines including the Husky ,Vitpilen 701, Supermoto, and 701 Enduro. It also finds a home in the KTM 690 Enduro R and 690 SMC R. And it’s with good reason - no other single-cylinder thumper delivers tyre-twisting torque (a claimed 53 poundfeet) like the LC4. It’s truly a legendary powerplant that is smoother than it should be considering its raucous delivery. Many a twin could only hope to have as much character.

The chrome-moly trellis frame that uses the engine as stressed member is also lifted from the Vitpilen and nearly identical to all of the LC4-powered machines in the Husqvarna family. And once again, that is a great thing. The chassis is stiff, muscular, and willing but not ever harsh. It flexes when needed, imparting a connection to the suspension and road that is confidence inspiring while still being lively and quick.

Whereas the racier nature of the Vitpilen asks the rider to forego comfort for the look, the Svartpilen has the looks and the comfort.

The seat is firm, but very comfortable despite the hard edges and thin padding. A pulled-back, trackstyled handlebar is not quite a tiller bend you’d find on a true-to-life flat-tracker, but it’s also not just a motocross bar. It is happily in the middle with a nice rise that puts the hands at a comfortable height and squares up the shoulders allowing the rider to impart loads of torque into the grips, pushing the 18-inch wheel where you want it with ease.

And that’s another key difference that makes the Svartpilen more fun than its white stablemate. While the Vit is fitted with 17-inch wheels with Bridgestone Battlax tyres, the Svart rocks an 18-inch front wheel

and 17-inch rear wrapped with Pirelli MT 60 RS tyres.

On the road, the MT 60 RSs provide more grip than would be expected from its chunky block pattern; when as the limit is approached the tyres give you plenty of warning with a squirm and loose feeling that is completely predictable - and entertaining.

The 150mm travel of the 43mm WP split function fork is plush and will follow the road imperfections with composure. That extra 15mm of travel is essential front-end comfort not found in the Vit’s 135mm of travel. At the rear, it’s the same situation.

Even with that longer travel, the suspension is balanced and doesn’t pitch excessively on hard braking or acceleration.

Fuel metering via the Svartpilen’s ride-by-wire throttle is well sorted - response is smooth yet snappy at any opening, and doesn’t exhibit any herkyjerky tendencies on mid-corner throttle changes.

A healthy wallop of the right wrist while on the side of the tyre will have the little yellow traction control

flashing, but the electronic aid is seamless without any real discernible cut. Only when lofting that 18-incher toward the sky will we find a hard cut if the momentum up and away is too quick. Otherwise, the power tapers the wheel back to earth fairly gently.

While we can turn off the traction control, unfortunately there is no such option for the ABS. The front 320mm disc and Brembo four-piston radial caliper offer excellent feel and plenty of stopping power, and the rear single-piston caliper and 240m disc also are excellent. We can back it in (just barely) bumping up against the the Power Assisted Slipper Clutch (PASC) but it requires crazy speeds and abusive downshifts. Even then, the PASC does its job well and returns the rear tyre back in line with the front quickly.

It’s svelte Swedish looks, comfortable riding position, stonking single-cylinder engine, and impressive handling all combine for something greater than the specs and equipment would suggest.

An arrow should fly true to its target, and Husqvarna’s Black Arrow does just that.

The 2020 Indian Scouts - more power & sound The Indian Motorcycles Company has been around off and on and in various guises since 1901, but its popular Scout line of entry-level bikes didn’t come about until 1920. To celebrate the Scout’s 100th birthday, Indian announced that it’s releasing a couple of special models to go alongside its usual complement of Bobbers and Sixties and standard Scouts.

The two special models are called the Scout Bobber Twenty and (rather appropriately ) the 100th Anniversary Scout.

Both bikes harp back to the past, especially the look of the Bobber Twenty, which is meant to evoke the original 1920 G-20 Scout, a model later made famous by land speed racer Burt Munro – who all Kiwis know as ‘The World’s Fastest Indian.’

These new bikes and the rest of the 2020 Scout lineup get a few tweaks to their technical specs that should go a long way to improve their performance and make them even nicer to ride.

From a rider’s perspective, the most significant change comes to the Scout’s brakes. The 2020 model gets upgraded to floating rotors and also gets new calipers and a new master cylinder. This brake upgrade, when paired with the new Pirelli MT60RS tyres, means that the bike’s stopping performance and therefore rider confidence should both be increased significantly.

The 2020 Scout also gets a sport seat and passenger pegs.

Also different for 2020 is the selection of available performance exhausts from the factory that not only work to make the bike sound awesome but promise

a 10 percent bump in power, and these new exhausts will also fit 2019 models. There’s a performance accessory intake on offer, too, and Indian claims that’s good for a five percent increase in power.

Scout 100th Anniversary The 100th Anniversary Scout sports a special ‘Indian Motorcycle Red’ colour with ‘Anniversary Gold’ trim and a desert tan leather solo seat to resemble the styling cues of the original 1920 Scout.

Besides the paint, the anniversary model comes with black wire wheels, beach bars, a luggage rack and chrome finishes. Indian will only produce 750 units worldwide so a special model indeed.

2020 Indian Scout Bobber Twenty The Indian Scout Bobber Twenty (as in Nineteen Twenty) comes with wire wheels and a floating saddle in a nod to the original Scout.

The Bobber Twenty also comes with 10-inch ape hanger handlebars and a mix of chrome and blackedout finishes.

The Twenty will not be a limited edition model like the Scout 100th Anniversary, and it’s priced at a smaller premium over the regular Scout Bobber and will be available in three colour options - Thunder Black, Sagebrush Smoke and Burnished Metallic.

Yamaha’s R3 – the benchmark gets upgrade makeover The Yamaha R3 has always been the good looking, great performing benchmark for those after the supersport looks, Yamaha reliability and a big dollop of fun mixed in.

The new model R3 is here and the recipe just got better.

Intent on maintaining that success, Yamaha instilled a good number of upgrades to the new model R3, the most obvious being swoopy new bodywork that follows the styling cues of its R6 and R1 brethren.

The new fairing not only provides better wind protection for the rider, but it’s also claimed to reduce aerodynamic drag by about seven percent, resulting in a claimed 10 kph top speed increase.

There’s a central air intake like the R1 and R6, but instead of forcing ram-air into the airbox, the R3’s airflow is routed down toward the radiator.

A pair of slimmer and sharper-looking LED headlights replace the previous model’s halogen units.

Behind that sleeker fairing sits an LCD instrument panel that closely resembles the R1 dashboard, with

The new R3 still has that novicefriendly character that helped make it such a sales success bar graphs for the tachometer, coolant temp, and fuel gauge, digital speedometer, and gear position indicator, and a host of other readouts.

Another nod to the R1 is the hollowed-out cast aluminium top triple clamp that mimics the same piece found on Yamaha’s MotoGP M1 race bike, with the clip-on bars now mounting below the triple clamp 22mm lower than before for a more sporty riding position than the previous-generation R3.

More ergonomic changes include a reshaped fuel tank that sits 20mm lower at the fuel cap to allow the rider to tuck in easier, while widening 31.4mm above the knees for improved leverage and grip with the knees and legs when cornering. Fuel capacity remains the same at 14 litres.

Don’t think it was all just styling and ergo changes with the new R3 though. A new, more rigid 37mm inverted KYB fork boasting a 20 percent stiffer spring rate along with increases in rebound and compression damping now graces the front, while the single rear KYB shock also gets revised spring and damping rates. The spring rate is 11 percent stiffer along with 10mm more preload, and the rebound damping is increased while the compression damping is slightly reduced.

These suspension upgrades address one of the few complaints that some had with the original R3 - that while adequate for average street riding, the soft spring/damping rates of the previous model would begin letting the chassis come unglued when the pace ramped up in the turns.

The fork is still non-adjustable, and the shock only features seven-step spring preload adjustability, but

that helps keep the new R3’s sticker price exactly the same as last year.

The new R3 still has that novice-friendly character that helped make it such a sales success, with a low-effort clutch and positive-shifting transmission working with the engine’s smooth throttle response making the power easy to control.

The low 780mm seat height, narrow midsection, and light weight (claimed curb weight is unchanged from the previous model at 170 kilos for the ABS version) ensure the Yamaha is unintimidating at lower speeds, and the brakes are responsive without being too progressive in a way that could overwhelm lessexperienced hands.

The performance upgrades have definitely transformed the R3 into a much more capable sport bike. Corner entries that would have the previous model tying itself into knots were drama-free on the 2019 version, and the stiffer spring and damping rates do a better job of keeping the pegs and hard parts off the deck, meaning we can carry more speed into and through the turns.

Aiding these antics are the vastly increased grip and excellent handling characteristics of the Dunlop GPR300s that inspire even more confidence in the rider.

The new YZF-R3 Yamaha isn’t going to just ride on the bike’s sales success, and that’s obviously a good thing. The styling updates have made it even more appealing to the average consumer, while the chassis and ergonomic upgrades make it more satisfying for the experienced rider without compromising that novice-friendly character.

It’s pretty easy to see why the R3 has sold so well, and with the changes the new model looks certain to continue that trend.

Carnival Panorama joins fleet ahead of December debut

Carnival Panorama launched year-round service from Long Beach, California, on December 11, becoming the line’s first new ship home ported on the West Coast in more than 20 years.

Carnival Cruise Line has taken delivery of Carnival Panorama at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy.

The ship becomes the 27th in the fleet and the third vessel in the popular Vista class.

Carnival Panorama then sailed to Long Beach, California, for her naming ceremony and inaugural sailing in December.

Holland America Line has celebrated the keel laying of its new 2668-passenger Ryndam at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard in Italy.

A 505-ton block, measuring 14 by 34 metres, was lowered by crane into the yard’s building dock, marking the official beginning of construction. The Pinnacle Class ship is scheduled for delivery in May 2021.

The event was attended by Keith Taylor, Holland America Group executive vice president, fleet operations, and Jan Koller, Holland America Line project manager, newbuilds.

The block laid was one of 85 blocks in total that will make up the ship.

“The keel laying is an important construction milestone because it marks the moment when we can really start to watch the ship take shape and progress toward its launch in 18 months,” said Orlando Ashford, president of Holland America Line.

“Adding Ryndam to our fleet will provide a new canvas for us to share our brand and enable us to show the world to even more cruisers.”

This is the 17th ship constructed for Holland America Line by Italian shipyard Fincantieri, which most recently built Pinnacle sister ship, Nieuw Statendam.

The cruise line began its relationship with Fincantieri in 1992 with the building of Statendam.

The first Ryndam was part of the Holland America Line fleet from 1901 to 1929, starting as Rijndam before receiving the English spelling in 1923.

In 1927 Ryndam I became the first Holland America Line ship to sail a world cruise, although it was chartered as a floating school at sea for that voyage.

The second Ryndam served from 1951 to 1973, and the third sailed in the fleet from 1993 through 2015, when it was transferred to sister brand P&O Australia and now cruises as Pacific Aria.

RURUTU The northernmost island in the Austral archipelago, Rurutu is known for its dramatic cliffs and caves, as well as some of the best whale watching in the world.

Between August and October, hordes of humpbacks arrive at Rurutu to mate and give birth, offering the chance to swim with mothers and calves in crystalclear water.

Rurutu, meaning ‘the gushing rock,” is a mountainous island circled by coral cliffs, with a series of stalactites and stalagmites surrounding the coral reef. A beautiful combination of dramatic rock, lush greenery, white sandy beaches, beautiful bays and charming locals make for a memorable visit.

RAIVAVAE One of French Polynesia’s most beautiful islands, Raivavae boasts a luminescent blue lagoon, a coral reef with a smattering of islets, verdant green hills and a picture postcard beach. Often considered the most beautiful island of the Pacific, it could easily be mistaken for Bora Bora, minus the overwater bungalows.

Locals have chosen to keep their island untouched and opt for low-key ecotourism. Crossing the Tasman Auckland to Adelaide aboard the MV Vasco Da Gama We board the Vasco Da Gama at Auckland Queens Wharf on a cruise that will take us first to Sydney and then on to Burnie in Tasmania and Melbourne before our arrival in Adelaide.

As the ship is on a voyage from the United Kingdom to Australia the number of passengers boarding would not have been more than 150, and the fact that they had staggered boarding times made for a very quick boarding process. Within half an hour of arriving at the terminal we are aboard and in our cabin.

The Vasco Da Gama is the newest vessel in the Cruise And Maritime Voyages fleet and was on its way to run a series of cruises out of Perth.

Starting out as the Holland Americas Statendam in 1993 at 55,819 tonnes she is regarded to be a mid-sized cruise ship. With 630 cabins the Vasco Da Gama has berths for 1220 passengers in a range of cabins from inside berths to a large penthouse suite. In all, there are 22 grades of cabins to choose from.

On leaving Holland America the Statendam was transferred to P&O Australia as the Pacific Eden before finally being taken over

by Cruise And Maritime Voyages as the Vasco Da Gama.

The impressive three-decked atrium is the focal point of the ship.

It is here we find the shopping galleria, a cinema, casino, coffee shop and library.

Vasco Da Gama offers extensive deck areas and promenades with classic timber style decking.

There are two swimming pools with the main pool benefitting from a hydraulic glass roof that covers the main pool, spa pools and central lido area so this can be used in all weather.

Most of the public rooms are concentrated on two decks which creates a spacious feel.

There are four main restaurants - the Waterfront Restaurant, Waterfront Mediterranean and Waterfront Eurasia. For those who prefer a more casual meal the Club Bistro on deck 11 is open for breakfast lunch and dinner. The Mediterranean and Eurasia restaurants are only open for evening meals. There is no set seating and meal times are flexible, so passengers just arrive any time between 5.30pm and 8.30pm for your evening meal. This is a first for Cruise And Maritime Voyages and works very well. We never had to queue at all, unlike so many cruise ships today.

There are two specialty dining venues offering further options that carry a supplementary charge.

The first being The Grill, specialising in steaks as the name suggests. The other premium restaurant is the Chefs Table which offers an exclusive multi-course dining experience, specially created and hosted by the executive chef. Here passengers will experience a nine-course menu accompanied by selected wines.

The chef remains with the guests throughout the meal.

For those who would rather eat in their room there is a room service menu. There is a charge for in-room food and the menu is not extensive comprising just eight options. There is an assortment of sandwiches or a Classic Cheese Burger at $14.95, Spaghetti Bolognese at $11.90. A continental breakfast can be served in passenger’s cabins consisting of pastries, juice, jam, butter with and tea or coffee. A premium breakfast comprising a continental breakfast plus a choice of six cooked items attracts a tray charge of $19.95.

Across the vessel there are five lounge bars and four entertainment venues, each with its own style and personality. From the two-tier show lounge, Hollywood’s to the Dome Observatory, Vasco Da Gama has a venue for every occasion. Those looking to watch some live music over a nightcap, can head to the Blue Room. For something more casual there’s the pool bar.

My favourite outdoor area was a little bar hidden away at the aft end of deck ten. This is the Oasis Bar overlooking the Oasis pool. For some reason this area never seemed to get over crowded.

There was a large casino on board with the slot machines being open 24 hours and the tables open from 2pm until late. This seemed to be a very unused during our voyage.

Unfortunately our cruise did not go as planned. On boarding the Vasco Da Gama after our day in Sydney it was announced by the captain that we would not be visiting Burnie in Tasmania. The reason behind this was that with five metre swells and gale force winds in Bass Strait the ship would have to proceed at a slower pace which would result in us being five hours late in arriving making our call to Burnie Hardly worthwhile. Our port of call was changed to Eden, a fishing port on the New South Wales coast midway between Sydney and Melbourne.

An interesting fact did emerge about the reason for Bass Strait’s ability to produce such notoriously bad seas – this being its dimensions of approximately 250 kilometres wide and 500 kilometres long – but only 60 metres deep.

The theme of this cruise was on Australian military history. There are three military historians on board and two lectures are given each day along with military history quizzes and themed movies in the theatre. The whole programme was centred around how close both the first and second world wars came to Australia.

It was announced while on board that Cruise And Maritime Voyages were celebrating their tenth anniversary.

We enjoyed the fact that Cruise And Maritime Voyages are bringing back the good old days of cruising and shipboard life on medium-sized cruise ships, without all the glitz and carry on associated with a lot of the larger ships plying the oceans today.

However not all goes to plan.

While still approximately two hours out of Adelaide at 5.30am everything goes quiet. We have lost all power, water, all ship board services are shut down. It is two hours before the captain tells us that they had shut the engines down as a precaution as warning lights had appeared. At 9.30 all started up again. Unfortunately a lot of passengers, including ourselves, missed our connecting flights. It’s amazing the amount of hysteria shutting the engines down for four hours in a calm harbour can cause. Perhaps more information from the crew would have helped.

Boarding is relatively easy and within half an hour we are comfortably at home in our cabin.

The Explorer Dream started life in 1999 as the Superstar Virgo for Star Cruises. At 75,338 tonnes she was a large cruise ship when she was first launched, but now she is classed as medium. She has a capacity for 1856 passengers in 928 staterooms.

Some US$50 million was spent on the conversion of Superstar Virgo into the Explorer Dream.

There is a walk-around outdoor promenade deck, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Inside,

there are two boulevards, and a large and stunning two-deck high central atrium lobby featuring shops and cafes and accessed via three glass-walled elevators.

This is the first time that the Explorer Dream has visited Australia and New Zealand and was to be sailing out of Auckland for eight weeks with itineraries including both North and South Islands. This inaugural cruise takes us from Sydney to Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, Dunedin, Wellington and Gisborne before docking in Auckland.

For those that have never been to the Milford or Doubtful Sounds this is a great way of experiencing the beauty and grandeur of this magnificent part of New Zealand. The Explorer Dream steams to the end of Milford Sound before turning around and heading back out to sea. The waterfalls and the sound of birdlife are truly amazing.

Dream Cruises has introduced an entirely new concept onboard called ‘The Palace.’ The place consists of 40 suites. These suites are described as a ship within a ship. The Palace Restaurant is fine dining at its best. The staff are very attentive and obliging. We can see the chefs preparing our meal. There are no pre-prepared meals here. One meal example comprises a starter of Whole Abalone with Oyster Sauce followed by Lobster Tail. For we seafood lovers, this was absolutely divine.

One of the highlights of the cruise is meeting the acclaimed Australian chef Mark Best. Best started his working life as an electrician in the gold mines of Western Australia before starting his culinary career at the age of 25. He has won many awards and accolades and among his many ventures is the Seafood Grill by Mark Best on the Dream Cruise fleet.

We take a food tour of Gisborne with Best where we spend time at the fresh produce markets before going on to Grears Bakery to taste some of their fine products ending up at Raglan Roast, regarded as Gisborne’s finest coffee outlet. However the highlight of this tour was a stop at the Red Caravan which serves takeaway hangi and paua Pies. The paua pies are a culinary delight. I have a lot of good memories of this cruise but the taste of that pie will stay with me forever.

The Explorer Dream has all the amenities we would expect on a cruise ship of this size.
