C OV E R S C O L L EC T I O N Vogue Covers in Australia continue to inspire after more than 60 years. VOGUE Covers are visual masterpieces, depicting the elegance, boldness, innovative and creative aspects that tie fashion, photography and models together to craft a captivating moment in time. VOGUE Australia’s journey started back in 1955. Back then, the British VOGUE magazine created an extension for it’s Australian audience which was simply titled VOGUE Supplement for Australia. This ‘Supplement’ ran from 1955 to 1957. Then in 1959, VOGUE Australia came into existence with its head office in Sydney. The first ever edition was the Spring/Summer title for that year. Since that time, VOGUE Australia has marked numerous milestones, not only as a fashion publication but also in addressing social justices. VOGUE Australia’s JUNE/JULY 2020 COVER: Cate Blanchett painted by Fiona Lowry Cate Blanchett stars on Vogue Australia’s June/July 2020 cover – but not as you know it. The Academy Award-winning actor, while in lockdown in the UK, agreed to collaborate with Vogue on a special portrait with one of her favourite artists, Fiona Lowry, who, on the other side of the world, was also in lockdown. Lowry, an Archibald Prize-winning artist, agreed to paint Blanchett especially for the cover. The final product took two weeks to complete after Blanchett was photographed at home in the UK.

Fiona Lowry VOGUE cover 2020 Fiona Lowry was born in 1974 in Sydney, Australia. Lowry received her Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) from the Sydney College of the Arts. Fiona was awarded the prestigious Archibald Prize from the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2014. She is also a regular exhibitor in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Art Prizes. Fiona has also been awarded the Doug Moran Portrait Prize in 2008 and the Fleurieu Landscape Prize in 2013. Fiona and Cate first met via a phone call during Covid times. After their first conversation Fiona says “I really felt very excited about what was possible. There were so many elements to resolve: a portrait of Cate, a portrait of her reflecting the time and a portrait of Cate performing inside one of my paintings with all the connotations that my work brings with it. It really was a very special moment for me to be able to work with someone I have always found so inspiring.”

Hope. It is a powerful word that resonates with us strongly in 2020. Bushfires. Floods. A global pandemic. We need hope now more than ever. The September issue of all 26 editions of Vogue have focused on hope, with each producing a cover to reflect a universal longing for a recovered future. In the midst of Australia’s lockdown, the Vogue Australia team collaborated with the National Gallery of Australia to commission Anangu / Aboriginal Pitjantjatjara woman, spiritual healer and artist, Betty Muffler, to bring us hope. ‘Ngangkari Ngura (Healing Country) 2020’ is the first original fine artwork to feature on the cover of Vogue Australia in its 60 year history and is on display at the National Gallery of Australia for all to view. Muffler is also a finalist in this years Wynne Prize. 7
