RECYCLE YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE THIS JANUARY AND SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL HOSPICE

Save the seasonal stress of disposing of your Christmas Tree yourself and let The Hospice of St Francis provide a hassle-free collection service straight from your door!

Harpenden and St Albans residents are asked to make a donation in return for having their tree collected by a team of volunteers and all the money raised will contribute to the over £5million the Hospice needs every year to fund its free care.

Generously supported by Veolia and the St Albans Lions Club and Harpenden Lions Club, the teams of volunteers will be out in specially organised vans on 7th, 8th and 9th January 2023, throughout the District.

In an average year the Berkhamsted-based Hospice supports around 150 patients and their families from the St Albans and Harpenden area. Arranging collection is easy, just visit stfrancis.org.uk/treecollection and leave the rest to the Hospice!

You don’t even need to be there on the day - simply leave your tree outside your home. The trees will then be chipped, recycled and turned into bio fertiliser for farms in and around the local area.

Lucy Hume, Joint Director of Fundraising at the Hospice, said: “We’re delighted that the residents of Harpenden have taken to our Christmas tree collection so well and are thrilled to be back here again collecting and recycling more trees this Christmas with the help of Veolia and local Lions Clubs.

We couldn’t raise the £5million+ we need each year to continue to provide our free care and support, without the help of people like you in our local community.

Every donation made for the collection of your Christmas Tree is helping more people and their families to live their precious lives well.”

For more information please visit: www.stfrancis.org.uk/ support-us/ events/detail/christmas-tree-collection or contact the Hospice on: 01442 869555.

A number of changes are set to be made to the wards and boundaries of Parish and Town Councils in St Albans District following a review.

The proposals are intended to better reflect the identities of local communities and make the electoral arrangements more effective.

St Albans City and District Council are carrying out the Community Governance review of the nine Parish and Town Councils within its area.

The review included two public consultations during which residents were encouraged to give their views. Members of the Council’s Policy Committee accepted the final recommendations of the review report at its meeting on Thursday 24 November. These will now go to a Full Council meeting next month for approval.

REVIEW OF PARISH & TOWN COUNCIL WARDS & BOUNDARIES IN ST ALBANS DISTRICT

If accepted, the changes will come into effect in time for the Parish and Town Council elections on Thursday 4 May next year.

Among the recommendations are changes to the boundaries of Colney Heath, Sandridge, London Colney, Wheathampstead, St Michael and St Stephen Parish Councils (PCs) as well as Harpenden Town Council. No changes are recommended for Harpenden Rural PC or Redbourn PC.

For more information espoically about the substantial proposal is a change to the boundary of Colney Heath PC to match that of the Colney Heath District Council ward. This would remove residents of the Hill End District Council ward from the Parish while the number of Parish Councillors would be reduced by two to seven.

In the second round of consultations, some residents in the Hill End ward indicated they would like a new Parish Council for that area. For more information please visit www.stalbans.gov.uk

New route to pain Relief in Harpenden

Does this describe you?

• You have been diagnosed with a slipped disc in your neck or lower back.

• You are having a nightmare trying to do normal things like sitting, walking and getting dressed.

• The pain is disturbing your sleep and you constantly taking painkillers.

• You have tried other treatments like physiotherapy or osteopathy, and where disappointed that they did not work for you.

You are looking for a long term solution but would like to avoid surgery

Gillian Brown, Osteopath and co-owner of Harpenden Sportsnspinal clinic helps many patients find a solution to their unresolved back and neck pain using IDD therapy (Intervertebral disc decompression). This cutting-edge medical technology deals with more severe spinal issues that require more than manual therapy.

Don’t take our word for it....

"IDD Therapy was my last resort after over a year of excruciating leg and back pain. The pain was affecting both my work and sleeping and making me feel depressed. I found the treatment very relaxing and even fell asleep during treatments. It has been life-changing and after 15 sessions I am now pain free. I would highly recommend to you if you have sciatica“

Monica, Harpenden: "After 2 years of not being able to compete at my favourite sport, tennis, I have finally found a treatment that is getting me active again. Gillian Brown at Sportsnspinal in Harpenden recommended this brilliant method of traction using the latest technology called IDD. It's helping release the pressure on my lower back discs and the results are phenomenal. I've gone from being scared to run to competing at international level in a year. I get to lie down on the machine for 26 mins of chill time while it works its magic. No regrets here"

Safer Neighbourhood Harpenden and Rural

YOU SAID. WE DID:

YOU SAID: Tackle drugs and alcohol use and associated anti social behaviour in local parks including Rothampstead Park, Redbourn Recreational grounds and Wheathampstead playing fields

WE DID: Rothampstead Park has been a focus of our attention following an increase number of call and reports from the public and partners. We have disrupted anti-social behaviour by seizing alcohol and issuing warnings. We have seen a reduction in criminal damage and anti-social behaviour since the introduction of CCTV cameras by Harpenden Town Council. However, we will continue high-visibility patrols in other parks in the area along side covert (plain-clothed) patrols.

WE DID: We have been carrying out regular speed enforcement supporting the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Drivesafe scheme on roads highlighted as being an issue to us including Redbourn Road, Marford Road, Lower Luton Road and Brewhouse Hill. PSCOs monitor vehicles speed and send awareness letters to those exceeding the limit. Ten drivers caught speeding using the speed enforcement van have been fined, sent on driving improvement course or summonsed directly to court for excessive speed. An additional 26 drivers have been dealt with.

YOU SAID: Tackle theft form motor vehicles and vehicle interference (including the targeting of catalytic converters by thieves) between 11pm and 3am at the train station.

WE DID: We have made arrests and continue carry out our regular covert and overt patrols with Operation Scorpion officers, working alongside British Transport Police. We have also been reminding drivers to make sure they make sure they securely lock their vehicles and remove all valuables. We have been raising public awareness of anti- number plate thief screws and catalytic converter smart water marking kits and have given out “Faraday Bags” to drivers to help prevent keyless thefts of motor vehicles.

Has Your Double Glazing Steamed Up?

Established for over 16 years, Cloudy2Clear windows have become the UK’s leading company for domestic glass replacement. Customers are no longer needing to risk their windows by using the dreaded double glazing cowboy down the road, instead, now they can join over 320,000 happy customers and have their glass replaced in an affordable and ethical manner. Remember, a failed glass unit may no longer provide you with the protection you need or be energy efficient. Why not spend a few minutes checking your home to see if you have any failed double glazing? If you act now you can avoid any future costly problems.

When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear windows Stephen Moon it became clear that these values

have been held dear for a number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money.

The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. Unfortunately we might be going through something similar again soon and the public can rest assured that we will be there to help once again”.

TWO NEW DEFIBRILLATORS INSTALLED

Harpenden Town Council are pleased to announce that a further two new defibrillators have now been installed within the Town.

The units are located at the Batford Springs Reserve HQ building (Lower Luton Road) and at the Public Toilets (High Street). Each year in Britain 30,000 people are affected by sudden cardiac arrest outside of the hospital environment. Every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces a victim’s survival rate by around 8%.The new units are fitted externally to each of the buildings which means that they are accessible 24/7 in the case of an emergency.

Each is stored within a locked cabinet, with the codes available from the emergency services when calling 999. If you would like to find out further details on this topic or the training that is available regarding defibrillators, visit the British Heart Foundation website www.bhf.org.uk

Despite regular maintenance checks, should you notice any damage to either of the cabinets, please do notify the Town Council to ensure that lives aren’t put at risk. These new units have been installed as part of the wider Public Realm Improvement Plan, which will also feature new schemes such as the installation of water refill stations around the Town to help reduce the use of single use plastic.

Keep an eye out for this launch in the coming months.

VOLUNTEER WITH HARPENDEN LIONS CLUB

We recycle Christmas trees and are involved in local environmental schemes such as tree planting, hedgerow maintenance and programmes to recycle spectacles, hearing aids and blister packs. We also run “Message in a Bottle” and “Message in a Wallet” initiatives - schemes that record important medical details for first responders - which are invaluable aids for the vulnerable and those living by themselves.

Are you interested in:

• Volunteering to help make a difference to those who are less fortunate?

• Finding a sense of purpose and belonging, through serving your local community?

• Meeting new people and having fun?

If the answer to any of those questions is ‘yes’ - then Harpenden Lions needs you!

We are a group of men and women who serve our community in a variety of ways, while also raising money for many local, national, and international charities (this year raising substantial monies for the Ukrainian refugee appeal and for Motor Neurone Disease research).

From organising the annual Harpenden Highland Gathering, to coordinating Giant Easter Egg raffles, we have contributed regularly to local fundraising initiatives. Since 1992, we have donated over £280,000 through our Life Skills Programme to the Personal, Social and Health Education Curriculum (PSHE) in local schools – which has supported a range of activities including drug awareness programmes, theatre group productions and infrastructure projects. We have also supported young people who have wanted to gain work experience and have organised Christmas Card and Art and Creative Writing Competitions, as well as Easter and Halloween Lion Trails for younger people.

With other Lions Clubs, we run a bookshop in the Marlowe’s Centre in Hemel Hempstead, which generates income to allow us to make donations, and we support town events such as the local Poppy Appeal, the Harpenden Carnival and Classics on the Common as well as the Santa sleigh at Christmas.

Harpenden Lions meet regularly on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month (at the Harpenden Arms pub) to plan our activities and for dinner meetings with guest speakers. There are also other opportunities to socialise including walks and visits to local businesses and organisations.

TOWN COUNCIL’S

CAMPAIGN TO STOP IDLING

Idling refers to running a vehicle’s engine when the vehicle is not in motion. This commonly occurs when drivers are waiting in their parked car while outside a school, club, business or residence.

Running your engine, or “idling”, when you’re not driving is not only bad for the environment but also bad for your health and that of your children, expensive and damaging to your vehicle.

Fumes that are released from a stationary vehicle contain a number of harmful gasses including carbon dioxide, which is bad for the environment and contributes towards climate change, as well as nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons which directly affect health and contribute to respiratory illness, cancer and premature death. Children and the elderly are especially vulnerable.

During the colder months when it’s tempting to keep the engine running, Harpenden Town Council is asking people to remember to turn their engine off when not driving. This is a message to remember especially when waiting to pick up from school, a community hall or club and at the station.

If you would like further information or copies of this poster to display outside your building, please let us know by emailing harpenden.town. council@harpenden. gov.uk or call one of our Officers on 01582 768278.

Rothamsted Park Harpenden

Rothamsted Park is a 56-acre (230,000 m2) public park in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. The park was formerly part of the Manor of Rothamsted, later Rothamsted

initiated agricultural experiments in 1843, which led to the founding of the

also created the formal entrance from Leyton Road to what is now the Park and planted the avenue of Lime trees. In 1931, the family decided to sell the estate, and after a successful public appeal, the Experimental Station was able to finance its purchase of the estate in 1934. In 1938 the Harpenden Urban District Council purchased the land now known as Rothamsted park from the Experimental Station, in order to provide playing fields and to preserve an important open space. Rothamsted Park is also home to Harpenden Town FC.

The Park’s main entrance gates were removed for salvage during the Second World War, and after the war the restoration of the entrance was paid for by the Friends Provident Insurance Company.

In 1975 the nearby sports hall was opened by the Mayor of St Albans City and District, as one of the first major projects of the newly formed St Albans District Council.

LYDEKKER PARK AN OASIS IN CENTRE OF HARPENDEN

The park is sited on land that was part of the grounds of Harpenden Lodge, which was built in 1803 and bought by the Lydekkers, one of Harpenden’s oldest families, in 1857. The property remained in the Lydekker family until 1987. The last surviving member of the Harpenden branch of the Lydekker family, Miss Hilda Lydekker, lived in Harpenden Lodge until 1979, when she left at the age of 93 to move into a nursing home. Her uncle, Captain Arthur Lydekker, was for six years the Chairman of Harpenden Urban District Council, from its inception in 1898.

This was to be completed by the developers of the newly created housing estate surrounding the park and donated in a finished state to the Council. As St Albans District Council was the successor Council to the former Harpenden Urban District Council, it became the beneficiary of this gifted land.

The Harpenden Town Council of that time made strenuous efforts to have the public open space and car park retained in the ownership of Harpenden Town Council.

Following discussions with the District Council, an agreement was reached in 1998 that Harpenden Town Council would lease Lydekker Park and the new 93 space fee paying car park from St Albans District Council at a peppercorn rent.

In 2012 after much campaigning Lydekker Park and car park were devolved back from the District Council into the ownership of Harpenden Town Council.

In 1937, Hilda Lydekker had entered into an agreement with the former Harpenden Urban District Council that the 11 acres of land attached to Harpenden Lodge should become private open space. It was her intention that part of it be preserved as a memorial to her loved ones lost in the 1914 – 1918 War. With the demise of the Urban District Council in 1974, this agreement passed to the newly created St Albans District Council. Following the death of Miss Lydekker in 1987, shortly before her 101st birthday, St Albans District Council entered into an agreement with the executors of the Will to retain a total of three acres as public open space with a car park.

The Council has now created a 5-year management plan for the park which can be viewed here. Two new interpretation boards were installed in the park in August 2017 and feature a background to the history of the park, and information about the wildlife that inhabit the ponds.

In July 2017, Lydekker Park was awarded its very first Green Flag Award, joining Harpenden Common as one of the UK’s very best open spaces.

Lydekker Park is situated just off Sun Lane, Harpenden.

Batford Springs Nature Reserve

Batford Springs is a 3.5 hectare Local Nature Reserve in Harpenden.. It is owned and managed by Harpenden Town Council. The majority of the conservation and maintenance work on the site is undertaken by Batford Springs Volunteers with assistance from the Council and other contractors. Such works are detailed in a 5-year management plan put together by the Volunteers with continuing input from a number of specialist advisors including the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust. In 1995, the area was accredited as a Reserve by Natural England. Its principal features are the fresh springs that serve a small network of chalk lined streams and ponds. The River Lea with its riverside walks flows through the site and there is open grassland and a small wooded area to explore. Locally the River Lea from its source in Luton through Harpenden down to Wheathampstead has been made a focus for the Upper Lea Catchment Management Plan.

In January 2015 the Batford Springs Local Nature Reserve was extended with the purchase of land in Marquis Lane. The land runs from the corner of Marquis Lane, eastwards to the bottom of Piggotshill Lane.A plan for to incorporate this area into the nature reserve is being drawn up in conjunction with the Batford Springs Volunteers and the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust. A fully accessible path across the new area was installed in November 2016.

Nomansland Common

Nomansland common is approximately 130 acres (52.5 ha) of common land of which Wheathampstead parish council owns 35 acres (95 ha) the remainder being owned by the Althorp Estate and located in Sandridge parish. Nomansland is reputed to have got its name because of the bitter rivalry and frequent disputes between the monasteries of St Albans and Westminster. Both claimed the land was within their respective parishes of Sandridge and Wheathampstead. It is believed that this area was used for grazing as early as 4000BC.

During the 1700s Nomansland was notorious for highway robberies, Dick Turpin and Tom King used to meet there regularly on their way to other counties. The most infamous robber in these parts was Lady Ferrers of Markyate, dubbed the Wicked Lady. During this time a gibbet (gallows ) was erected at the top of the hill towards St Albans, as a warning for thieves. Horse races were held here regularly between 1829 and 1837. In 1829 King George VI won the St Albans cup and it is thought the first proper steeplechase in England was held here in 1830.

There used to be a river running parallel to the main road from Wheathampstead to St Albans but this has now gone underground and runs where the outfield of the cricket pitch dips and turns under the cricket pavilion.

In 1429 a Puddingstone was placed to mark the boundary between Sandridge and Wheathampstead. This stone can be seen on the outfield of the cricket pitch close to the road.

For more information on Nomansland, its history and Puddingstone see the virtual museum on the Wheathampstead Heritage web site. www. wheathampsteadheritage.org.uk

Dunstable Downs

Dunstable Downs are part of the Chiltern Hills, in southern Bedfordshire . They are a chalk escarpment forming the north-eastern reaches of the Chilterns. At 797 ft (243 m), Dunstable Downs are the highest point of the county of Bedfordshire.

Because of its elevation, Dunstable Downs hosted a station in the shutter telegraph chain which connected the Admiralty in London to its naval ships in the port of Great Yarmouth during the years 1808 to 1814.

Whipsnade Zoo has cut an enormous lion shape into the chalk into the side of one of the hills. The lion can be seen from the B489 (Aylesbury to Dunstable road). The downs are used by gliders, kite fliers, hang gliders and paragliders in the area because of their height. The London Gliding Club is based at the foot of the downs. Much of the downs is managed by the National Trust as part of the Dunstable Downs & Whipsnade Estate property.

At the northern tip of the Dunstable Downs, lies the Five Knolls Barrow Cemetery. First described by antiquarian William Stukeley in the 18th century, the site contained burials from the late Neolithic to Saxon eras prior to excavation. They include the ‘Five Knolls Woman’, aged between 35 – 40 years, buried on her side with a flint knife. A mother and child, buried with a number of echinoid fossils were also found, dating approximately from the early Bronze Age. The site is also known for the deviant burial of executed Saxon criminals.

The downs are home to a wide variety of wildlife including many rare wild flowers, such as the bee orchid, and butterfly species, like the marbled white and the chalk hill blue. Areas of the west-facing slope were notified in 1987 under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) called Dunstable and Whipsnade Downs. Blow’s Down is a continuation of the Dunstable Downs escarpment on the eastern side of Dunstable. It is also an SSSI and most of it is managed by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire (as Blow’s Downs).

Walk in the steps of history giants at Dunstable Downs, is a walk that begins and ends with elevated views from Dunstable Downs. Find out how people in prehistoric times, right up to the recent past, lived in this unique landscape. Visit the Armada fire beacon, Pre-historic mounds and site of the Admiralty Signal station. For details and directions of this walk visit: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/dunstable-downsand-whipsnade-estate/trails/walk-in-thesteps-of-history-giants

What’s On MARCH Got an event worth shouting about? Next edition covers the months of March, April and May, so get in touch before the end of February with all your details. Email: mike@harpendendiretcory.co.uk

In the UK, around 25,000 more people die over the course of each winter compared to other times of the year. That’s why Hertfordshire County Council is urging people to take practical steps to help them stay well this winter.

There are a range of conditions worsened by the cold weather - including respiratory conditions like severe asthma and COPD; circulatory illnesses such as heart disease and stroke; kidney disease; diabetes and dementia. Those who are older, pregnant, carers and very young children are also more at risk in winter.

The Stay Well This Winter campaign encourages people most at risk from cold weather to take some simple precautions to help them prepare for the lower temperatures.

Local pharmacists can offer free, qualified health advice at any time, and no appointment is necessary. From coughs and colds to aches and pains, they can give expert help on everyday illnesses and answer questions about prescribed and over the counter medicines.

Hertfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, Localism and Libraries, Teresa Heritage, said: “With winter on the way, there are important things we can all do to keep ourselves healthy during the winter months.

“If you qualify for the free flu jab, get it now before it’s too late – it’s the best way to protect yourself.

“Cold and damp homes can contribute to poor health so make sure you heat your home to at least 18°C (65°F) and keep windows closed at night. Help to make sure your home is energy efficient is available by calling 0300 123 4044.

“If you do start to feel ill, seek immediate advice from a pharmacist before your condition gets more serious.”

There are also other practical dangers when the weather gets cold such as icy pavements, which lead to an increase in slips and falls, particularly amongst the elderly so take extra care outside.

Look after you and your loved ones by eating and drinking well, taking exercise, socialising with others and making sure you have stocks of food and medicines at home.

If you’re worried about someone or need help yourself, Call HertsHelp on 0300 123 4044, email info@hertshelp.net or visit www.hertfordshire. gov.uk/winterhealth

If you don’t fall into one of the at risk groups but want a flu jab, they are available at many local supermarkets and pharmacies for a small fee.

DRY JANUARY

Here’s a few of the benefits:

1. You may lose weight

It’s no secret that alcohol is loaded with calories. At 7 calories per gram, a standard glass of wine (5 ounces) can contain about 130 calories, and a serving of beer (12 ounces) nearly 330 calories.

It only takes three weeks to break a habit, so this could be your route to happier, healthier drinking long-term.

Alcohol is linked with more than 60 health conditions, including liver disease, high blood pressure, depression and seven types of cancer. In fact, alcohol is the biggest cause of death for people aged 15-49 in the UK. Cutting back on alcohol reduces your risk of developing these conditions.

The UK’s top doctors (they’re called the Chief Medical Officers) recommend drinking no more than 14 units per week, spread over three or more days, and with at least two days off.

The good news is that Dry January is the perfect training ground for helping you cut down from February onwards!

Cutting down permanently is, for many people, very hard, because habits are hard to break. Dry January is an excellent way of learning what your habits are and how to break them, enabling you to cut down longer-term.

You can think of it as a bootcamp for drinking self-control!

2. You’ll get deeper sleep

It’s true that a nightcap can help you doze off faster, but according to a 2013 study, alcohol disrupts the most restorative phase of sleep that occurs later in the night.

3. You could kick a cold faster Alcohol can suppress your immune system, which might hinder your ability to fight off an illness. Even one night of too much drinking—in this case, drinking until you’re drunk—can interfere with your body’s ability to produce cytokines, or chemicals that help fight off infections.

4. Your skin might look younger Alcohol can act as a diuretic, which can increase fluid loss and lead to dehydration, possibly damaging the skin, plus, when people stop drinking, they get more calories from foods; this tends to improve their vitamin intake, which can also make their skin appear healthier.

5. You’ll get better at resisting peer pressure The participants in a Dry January study, not only drank less later in the year, but also felt more confident turning down drinks.

6. More money in your pocket The average person spends £50,000 on booze in their lifetime

Main Course

7 hour Slow Roast Leg of Lamb

Prep: 15 mins

Cook: 7 hrs, 30 mins Serves: 6

Ingredients: 1 large leg of lamb, about 3kg/6lb 8oz 4 onions, sliced 8 garlic cloves, peeled, left whole 4 carrots, leave whole if small or quarter lengthways 300ml white wine

300ml stock, use what you have Thyme sprigs to finish

Method:

Preheat Oven to to 120C/fan 100C/gas ½

Put your largest lidded casserole on the hob and brown the seasoned leg of lamb on all sides. Make sure you do this thoroughly until it is a good dark brown as it will not brown in the oven. If the lamb sticks, add a drizzle of oil.

Allow 10 minutes on a high heat. Pour away any fat that has collected in the bottom of the pan.

Throw in the vegetables, followed by the wine and stock. Season and bring to the boil, then put the lid of the casserole dish on and put in the oven. Bake for 7 hours, turning twice during the cooking process.

There is no need to rest the meat when it is cooked in this way, so you can serve straight away.

Serve with potatoes, garden vegetables and a sprig of thyme.

Baked Cheesecake with Crumble Topping

Prep: 50 minutes, plus 3 hours chilling

Cooking time: 50 minutes to 60 minutes

Total time: 280 minutes to 290 minutes

Ingredients - Serves 8:

Crumble

30g caster sugar

60g butter

125g plain flour

375g dessert shortcrust pastr y

Filling:

500g ricotta

85g soured cream

4 medium eggs, separated

200g caster sugar

1 lemon, finely grated zest, plus 1 tbsp juice

1 tsp vanilla extract

2 tbsp plain flour

Dessert

Method

Preheat the oven to 180°C, gas mark 4.

Take a 25cm tart tin that’s at least 5cm deep and has a removable base, line with the pastry and chill for half an hour. Prick the base all over with a fork, line with baking parchment, & weight down with baking beans.

Cook for 12 minutes, then remove the beans and paper and return the pastry case to the oven. Bake for a further 7 minutes until dry. Remove from the oven and leave to cool.

Reduce the heat of the oven to 170°C, gas mark 3.To make the filling, beat the ricotta with the soured cream. Beat the egg yolks with the caster sugar until pale, then add to the cheese mixture, also mixing in the lemon zest and juice and vanilla extract.

Beat the egg whites until they form soft peaks. Sift the flour over the ricotta mixture, then fold it in along with the egg whites. Spoon the filling into the pastry case.

To make the crumble mixture, rub the butter into the flour, then stir in the sugar. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the surface of the cheesecake. Bake for about 50 minutes to one hour, until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.

Turn off the oven, leaving the door slightly ajar, and allow the cheesecake to cool in the oven, then chill it for at least 3 hours before serving.

Hands up who cleans their dirty pans in the sink? That’ll be most of us then. But turns out washing our frying pans in this way could be harming the environment.

According to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), who have issued new guidance on how people should be cleaning pans in order to save water. Instead of just rinsing under the tap, they are advising you wait until oil in your pan has cooled before scraping the excess off to reuse or bin. They then suggest we wipe leftover grease out of the pan with kitchen roll before finally washing. It is estimated the UK water industry spends £100m each year on clearing blockages caused by the wrong things being put down sinks and toilets.

The department released the guidance as part of its new Love Water campaign, which aims to reduce the amount of oil we pour into our waterways as a nation.

If washed off with water, the oil and fat can harden in pipes, causing fatbergs to form - which is expensive to remove.

Just one litre of oil poured down the sink can pollute one million litres of water, DEFRA said.

The Food Standards Agency said there is no reason not to follow the advice regarding cleaning frying pans,“As long as utensils are washed appropriately after scraping out the oil, there is no health and safety issue.”

The advice comes as campaigner’s fear England could run short on water in the next 25 years, with Environment Agency chief executive Sir James Bevan describing it as a “jaws of death” situation.

It is estimated that these trees could remove 77,000 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere over their lifetime.

The giveaway has been delivered by a partnership of the county council and Hertfordshire’s district and borough councils, as well as local charity Growing People. Herts FullStop provided its facilities, workforce and logistical expertise to help prepare and deliver the trees to the relevant pick-up points across the county.

The tree giveaway is just one of the ways we hope to deliver our Tree and Woodland Strategy, which outlines plans to establish 1.8m new trees in Hertfordshire by 2030.

Working with partners across the county will be key in delivering this ambitious figure. We have recently successfully bid for £78,983 on behalf of district and borough councils from the Local Authority Treescape fund. This funding will allow for a further 6,688 trees to be planted across the county this winter.

In addition, further funding from the Government’s Woodland Creation Accelerator Fund will allow the council to hire two new members of staff to provide support and work in partnership with others to deliver tree, hedgerow, and woodland planting between spring 2023 and 2025.

KEYLESS THEFT OF MOTOR VEHICLES

Hertfordshire Constabulary has recently seen an increase in this crime type and if you own a keyless car then it could be at risk from thieves. The diagram below shows how a keyless car theft occurs. There are practical steps YOU can take to reduce the risk of your vehicle being stolen.

KEYLESS THEFT: HOW IT WORKS

Keyless theft is the term given when a vehicle is stolen without the thief having physical access to the key. The theft can be committed without the criminal entering your home by simply detecting the key’s signal from outside. The thief will use a signal boosting device which picks up and increases the signal detected from the vicinity of the key to the vehicle, making your vehicle think the key is nearby.

There are a number of products that can be used to prevent and deter theft of motor vehicles including:

• Faraday Bag Signal Blocker - Faraday pouches have become popular to combat so-called relay theft – where thieves boost the signal from a car’s keyless entry fob to get into the vehicle without the key. The pouches contain a wire mesh, known as a Faraday cage, that can block radio signals from the keyless entry system.

• Steering wheel lock, Crook Lock or steering wheel lock cover • Clutch claw and Pedal BoxesThese products help deter theft by encasing the pedals in a high visibility secure box.

• Hard -Off Fob Protector - Protects keyless entry/start cars with a smart tamper proof Hard-Off Fob Protector which helps stop your car from being stolen by signal cloning relay hacking attacks.

In addition, also consider the below recommendations.

• Do not leave keys by the door - Do not leave your keys in the hallway near the front door as fishing for vehicle keys through the letterbox is a prominent method of stealing them. Grabbing the signal is also easier for the thieves if the keys are near the front door.

• Disable fobs - Some types of key fobs can be switched to disabled, so check your vehicle manual or ask your dealer for advice.

• Install a tracker - Tracker systems can increase the chances of recovery of your vehicle if it is stolen. Many systems activate once the vehicle is stolen and track it via GPS and other systems.

• Consider CCTV - The installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) which can be linked to your television or video to view your garden is an alternative. If you do decide to use CCTV it is important to read the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) advice on Domestic CCTV systems - ico.org.uk
