The Spotty Dinosaur is Celebrating their First Birthday! What started as an idea to help local Mums has turned into a big success story for Spotty Dinosaur directors Natasha Murphy and Rebecca Minogue. For those that have not yet encountered The Spotty Dinosaur in Sandridge, it is a barn full of second hand children’s items for sale at second hand prices. Specialising in excellent condition stock, they sell items on behalf of local (and some not so local) parents who then earn cash for their no longer needed items. “Children grow so fast and they need so much that it seems such a shame just to throw it all away when another child could benefit” says Director and Mum of two Rebecca.

With their first anniversary fast approaching in October, it is competition time. A colouring competition has been launched to give their cheeky dinosaur a different design to brighten up the shop and also a new name.

If stock is not sold, the seller has the option to donate the items to charity where The Spotty Dinosaur ensure that the goods are sent to good homes and are used by people who need them supporting charities such as FEED in St Albans and The Luton and Dunstable Baby Unit (Toys).

For daily activities at The Spotty Dinosaur follow them on Facebook & Twitter (@TheSpottyD) and further information on competitions and terms of business can be found at: www.thespottydinosaur.co.uk

HAPPY BIRTHDAY URC!

Harpenden’s Classics on the Common 20th Anniversary

Harpenden’s URC Preschool have been celebrating their 45th anniversary this year with a range of special activities. One of the events, organised and funded by the PTA, was a 45th birthday party.

12, 000 classic vehicles attended Harpenden’s Classics on the Common for this its 20th Anniversary. The popular annual event, organised by The Harpenden Village Rotary Club, attracted crowds of visitors who were treated to an array of classic and vintage vehicles. The event is organised to raise money for Herts Air Ambulance, the local Samaritans branch, Keech Children’s Hospice and WaterAid; last year they raised £19, 000.

Mrs Chichester - Miles, the current preschool manager, was thrilled with the turnout, which included current and past families, members of staff (old and new,) and the three managers who have led the preschool since it opened 45 years ago.

Classics on the Common was the brain-child of Harpenden resident and Metropolitan Police officer Peter Madden. The idea was born shortly after he bought a 1968 Rover P5B coupe and the first year attracted 125 cars. Since that time the event has grown steadily in popularity with owners and spectators. It is the biggest classic car meeting of its kind in Britain.

The children who attended the party were treated to a bouncy castle, a tractor to climb in and explore, a disco, face painting and a selection of craft activities. There was also an amazing three tiered cake (donated by Victoria, a talented mum and owner of The Little Village Cakery,) which was cut by the three managers while the children sang happy birthday to their very special preschool!

Harpenden resident, Gerard Vander Westhuyzen, sat proudly with his 1978 Triumph spitfire 1500.

The party culminated in a balloon release, whereby 100 URC balloons were released into the beautiful blue skies of Harpenden; the winning balloon travelled all the way to Kent!

Originally from South Africa Mr Vander Westhuyzen, said his pride of joy was bought to mark his father’s 60th birthday.

BOYS & TEACHERS FROM ALDWICKBURY SCHOOL WORK TOGETHER TO RAISE MONEY FOR CHARITY. Through the Social Entrepreneurs ProjectYear 8 Boys from Aldwickbury have raised £1580.68 for charity. The Boys formed five companies and, with just a £20 investment, had to create a small business and ‘add value’ to a product before selling it on. In true Apprentice style they were tasked with creating a business plan, giving each other a position in the company and promoting, making and selling their products around school. Tom Brandt, head of maths at Aldwickbury, said, “This has been a great experience for the boys involved, teaching them some valuable business principles for the future.”

From Grimsby the three teachers will cycle the length of the country passing through places that hold dear memories for Tim’s family. They will then swim the Solent between Hurst Point and Colwell Bay before running 20 miles from Freshwater to Ventnor on the Isle of Wight.

The money raised by the boys was donated to Zane (Zimbabwe a National Emergency,) and Cancer Research; the boys choice of charity was partly inspired by three of their teachers who are embarking on a Coast to Coast Triathlon at the end of the month.

Are you in your dream

On 26th July Tim Marshall, Alan Foster and Matt Harrison will set out from Blundell Park, the home of Grimsby Town FC, and embark on a 400 mile journey to raise money for Cancer Research (a charity close to the heart of Tim who has recently lost two family members to the illness.)

BRING BACK CONKERS During the months of September and October conkers fall from horse chestnut trees; a shiny jewel encased in a prickly case. Children delight in collecting them, but sadly they are no longer used as they have been for generations... in a good old game of conkers! So, if you have forgotten (or have never played) here are some top conkers tips: • The best conkers to play with are uncracked, firm and symmetrical. • Make a hole through the middle of your chosen conker and thread a strong piece of string, about 25cm long, through the hole. Tie a knot at one end, so that it doesn’t pull through. • Each player has a conker hanging on a string. • Players take turns at hitting their opponent’s conker. If you are the one whose conker is to be hit first, let it hang down from the string which is wrapped round your hand. The conker is held at the height your opponent chooses and is held perfectly still. Your opponent, the striker, wraps his conker string round his hand just like yours. He then takes his conker in the other hand and draws it back for the strike. Releasing the conker he swings it down by the string held in the

other hand and tries to hit his opponents conker (yours) with it. • If a player misses hitting his/her opponents conker they are allowed up to two further goes. • If the strings tangle, the first player to call “strings” gets an extra shot. • If a player hits his/her opponents conker in such a way that it completes a whole circle after being hit - known as ‘round the world’ – the player gets another go. • If a player drops his conker, or it is knocked out of his hand the other player can shout ‘stamps’ & jump on it; but should its owner first cry ‘no stamps’ then the conker, hopefully, remains intact. • The game goes on in turns until one or other of the two conkers is completely destroyed. And for the competitive among you: • If you want ‘killer’ conkers, put them in water and simply discard the floaters & concentrate on the much harder ones at the bottom of the bucket. • Soak your conker in vinegar. • Bake your conker in the oven. • Use an old conker from previous years. (The latter three points are considered cheating...so don’t tell anyone!)

Remember, Remember the fifth of November Bonfire Night has a very long it is celebrated with elaborate

tradition involving plots and treason. Today fireworks and bonfires across the country.

Remember, remember the fifth of November. Gunpowder, treason, and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot.

Since that day the 5th November had been remembered as Guy Fawkes Night. Effigies of Guy Fawkes were made and children would take their guy out on the streets and ask for a ‘penny for the guy’ to pay for fireworks.

On 5th November 1605 Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London. The leader of the Gunpowder Plot was a man called Robert Catesby, he was a Catholic who was fiercely opposed to the king (James I) and the Protestant aristocracy of the time. The plan was foiled and Guy Fawkes was captured and sent to the Tower of London where he was later executed.

Today the traditions have changed and the fireworks seem to be the focal point of most celebrations; they are made using gunpowder, the same powder Guy Fawkes tried to use four hundred years ago to blow up Parliament. If you want to go to an organised event there are lots to choose from in the local area.

Are you bored with your gym? The Fit Lab is unlike a traditional gym; for starters there are no machines, no TVs and certainly no clock watching. This week I was introduced to MovNat; one of its newest classes which focuses on natural human movements to improve flexibility, strength and endurance. This includes balancing and walking along beams, swinging on its climbing frame, carrying sand bags and crawling along cushioned mats, like lions creeping towards its prey. All the while Stuart, the instructor, splits his time evenly between the group to make you feel as though he is your own Personal Trainer. The Fit Lab is all about body health as well as fitness and the instructors focus heavily on correct posture, to optimise performance.

The following day I am treated to a warm ache across my entire body which is a sure sign that it works. Shelley Doyle The Fit Lab Unit B5 156 St Albans Road Sandridge Hertfordshire AL4 9LP

NEW MUSEUM LOTTERY BID SUBMITTED St Albans City and District Council has submitted a new Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) bid for the museum and gallery project in St Albans Town Hall.

funding in March. Taking this on board, we worked with St Albans Cathedral and the Roman Theatre and other stakeholders to develop a clear 25-year vision for St Albans’ heritage. It is a much more powerful submission as our project fits well into the Heritage Lottery Fund’s new ‘output driven’ bid format.”

In March, the Council’s initial £3 million bid missed out on Heritage Lottery funding as the bidding round was oversubscribed. We expect to learn the outcome of the new bid in November 2013. The project involves moving the Museum of St Albans from Hatfield Road into the grade II* listed Town Hall located alongside Market Place. This city centre location will make the museum’s postRoman collection and University of Hertfordshire art gallery more accessible and visible. Councillor Mike Wakely, Portfolio Holder for Sports, Leisure and Heritage for St Albans City and District Council, said, “We received positive feedback from the Heritage Lottery Fund after missing out on

18

The Council will be contributing financial support for the new museum and gallery project. However, there is still a need for additional funds to be provided from other external sources. We are working with St Albans Museums and Galleries Trust on plans to raise these extra funds. We are aiming to provide opportunities for the community to get involved and to recognise significant benefactors. Information on the new museum and gallery project is available at:

THE SWAN IN WHEATHAMPSTEAD IS GIVEN A FACELIFT

The community in Wheathampstead was devastated when The Swan, a Grade II listed pub in the centre of the village, was burnt to its rafters in late July. One resident said, “You could feel the shock waves going through the village”. The security hoardings made a sad sight entering the village. But now there’s an ongoing celebration of famous ‘Locals painted by by Locals, for the Local’.

Once The Swan is restored, and the hoardings are ready to come down, the murals will be removed and used as a resource around the village which has recently developed an excellent Heritage Trail.”

St Helen’s Parish Church has led a community based project to paint a dozen mural panels over the hoardings. The brainchild of the Rector, the Rev. Richard Banham, they include ancient British warrior chief Cassivellaunus, John Bunyan, The ‘Wicked Lady’, and others.

YOUTH CAFÉ

OPENS IN REDBOURN Young people in Redbourn now have a place to listen to music, chat and make smoothies on Friday evenings following the opening of a youth café. The café is funded by St Albans and District Strategic Partnership and is based at Redbourn Recreation Centre in Dunstable Road. The Mayor of St Albans City and District, Cllr Annie Brewster, who attended the launch said, “This is a safe place for young people aged 13 to 17 years-old to hang out and have fun. They can meet up, play games, listen to music and make healthy smoothies in a very stylish venue.” The idea for a shake and smoothie bar came from members of Redbourn Youth Council.Young people also provided input into the design of their new space during starter café sessions held last month at the recreation centre. In addition, they helped source a smoothie maker, audio equipment and bean bags using funding from the Partnership. Cllr Julian Daly, Chair of the St Albans and District Strategic Partnership and Leader of St Albans City and District Council, “The Partnership identified a lack

of facilities for young people in the Redbourn area. This youth café helps fills that gap by providing a space for them to come together and socialise with one another. I want to thank local councillors for working with the Partnership to help develop this project, including District Councillor Maxine Crawley and Parish Councillor Vivienne Windle.” Funding from the Partnership is being provided for a youth worker to manage the youth café.The youth café is open every Friday evening at Redbourn Recreation Centre at 75 Dunstable Road from 7.30pm to 10pm. If you are interested in coming along to the youth café, please call Paul Sands on 01582 626202 or on 07540705966 or email: paul@rebournrecreation.co.uk.

WILL HORTON

APPEAL

Will is a 4 year old boy, who lives with his family in Harpenden.

Will has Cerebral Palsy, which affects all of his limbs. Doctors have said that as Will grows, the CP will cause deformities with increasing limitations to his movements. Although Will is heavily affected physically, he is a bright young man with a wonderful sense of humour. Will is currently unable to walk unaided and needs assistance with all physical activities that many of us take for granted, but he has a brave approach to the challenges he faces and the therapy he undergoes. Will’s elder sister goes to Crabtree Infants School, and Will is due to join in September 2013. Will regularly visits Great Ormond Street Hospital for therapy, and has recently been assessed for an operation developed in the USA, and now available in London. The operation, Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) has had some impressive results for children with CP, and has now been offered to Will. Unfortunately, funding is not available through the NHS. Will’s parents, Rebecca and Dave Horton now need to raise £50,000 to pay for the operation and post-operative therapy, and are looking for local support. To raise money, Rebecca has recently completed an overnight 100km cycle ride. Dave, who aside from his day job is a part-time ski instructor at Hemel’s Snow Centre, is at the time of writing, planning to climb Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest mountain.

Mayor views refit of HMS St Albans Every six years the Royal Navy Frigate, HMS St Albans, returns to dry dock in HM Naval Base Portsmouth for a complete refit. Back in August the Mayor of St Albans City and District, Cllr Annie Brewster, visited HMS St Albans to witness the makeover in progress. The Mayor was invited as a representative of the City of St Albans along with other people from organisations affiliated to the ship.

Mayor of St Albans, Annie Brewster, said:

The tour was led by Lieutenant Commander Matt Turner, HMS St Albans Senior Naval Officer, who is in charge while the ship is having her refit.

“I am very fortunate to be Mayor whilst a refit is in progress as it was a tremendous way to learn more about what HMS St Albans is and does. Seeing her stripped to the bare bones one can see what a cutting-edge part of the fleet she is. I am very proud of the integral role this frigate plays within the Royal Navy and what she and her crew achieve on a world stage.”

It was a rare opportunity to inspect the 133-metre vessel from underneath while she was positioned on blocks to allow access to all her parts.

The complete ship’s company of 185 crew will be assigned later this year before HMS St Albans conducts sea trials in 2014.

They were required to wear overalls, hard hats and protective glasses as they navigated around the hazardous areas in the dry dock and on board the ship.

ELVIS BOB Your local Elvis Tribute Act Bob is a local man who has

lived in the district all of his life; he currently lives in the Crabtree area of Harpenden.

Bob is currently working very hard to build his business and will be performing at Charlie’s Restaurant and Bar in Kinsbourne Green; he is also trying to secure a date to perform at Harpenden’s Royal British Legion.

Elvis is still a fairly new role for Bob, he also has his own garden company at present, but he is no stranger to the world of music. He has a musical background and has previously written his own songs and spent many years as a DJ in some of London’s well known clubs (including the ‘Ministry of Sound.’) But being a DJ didn’t satisfy Bob musically and it was while on a recent summer holiday to Rimini that he discovered his talent and Elvis Bob was born!

So, make sure you ‘talk about the good times’ and let everyone know about Harpenden’s new King!

Elvis Bob Tel: 01582 456828 Mob: 07887 692212

While holidaying in Italy Bob stumbled upon a one-man-band who was playing an Elvis tune; he decided to join in and add the vocals. Very quickly a crowd assembled in the Italian courtyard and when the song came to an end the pair were treated to a standing ovation and Bob was handed 50 Euros from an impressed tourist. It was this chance encounter which led to Bob, on his return to the UK, starting up his Elvis Tribute Act. So what can you expect if you book Elvis Bob? ‘A little less conversation and a little more action’ - sums up the act. Bob is not a comic, he is an Elvis impersonator and a DJ. His performances cover Elvis’ work from the early 50s through to 70s and Bob chooses, ‘the best ones that he’s done;’ his favourites are ‘Proud Mary’ and ‘Such a Fool as I.’ 32

St Albans in English Heritage report on high streets St Albans is among the towns and cities featured in an English Heritage report as positive examples of the changing face of the high street. English Heritage’s report aims to highlight ways heritage can play an effective role in strategies to protect and revive town centres. A copy of the report Changing Face of the High Street: Decline and Revival can be downloaded at: www.english-heritage.org.uk/publications/changingface-high-street-decline-revival/

Councillor Julian Daly, Leader and Portfolio Holder for Planning and Conservation at St Albans City and District Council, said: “Many cities and towns across the country are faced with a challenging retail environment in the high street. In St Albans, the Council’s strategy is to use the City’s heritage and events, like the Christmas market, to attract visitors and shoppers to the retail centre. We are also actively maintaining historic buildings, such as the Corn Exchange, and managing development so the City’s heritage continues to provide an attractive backdrop for retail.” Baroness Kay Andrews, Chair of English Heritage at the time the report was published said: “The challenges are not to be underestimated, but English Heritage believes that local authorities that have made the historic environment central to their retail ‘offer’ can go a long way to creating an attractive and viable high street.”

Photographs are used to illustrate the City’s “diversity of town centre uses alongside a strong historic fabric” and “a busy shopping day in historic St Albans”. Photographs also demonstrate how the City’s “rich heritage and town centre retail offer are complementary”.

St Dominic Primary comes top for school sustainability work Twelve local schools competed for the top spot at this year’s St Albans district Sustainable Schools Ambassador Conference.

Congratulations to all the schools taking part for their magnificent presentations.” Scarlett Scott and Christian Earley are this year’s Sustainable Schools Ambassadors from St Dominic Catholic Primary School. Scarlett said,“It’s been so much fun to help the school and the planet by being an Ambassador.”

First place for the school with the most innovative and influential sustainability project went to St Dominic Catholic Primary School in Harpenden. The school was rewarded for its work to raise awareness about the importance of bees and butterflies to the environment. The school has also developed a bee and butterfly garden. The Mayor of St Albans, Cllr Annie Brewster, who attended the event at the Civic Centre, commented, “It’s been very inspiring to hear about all the projects the children have been involved in this year. Small actions to limit the impact we make on our environment can make a big difference overall. Raising awareness about green issues with children at a young age, with solid support from teachers, will have a lasting affect on their lives.

The Sustainable Schools Project Leader, Helen Cox from Sir John Lawes School in Harpenden said: “We are teaching young people about green issues such as energy use, waste and school grounds’ issues. We encourage them to take action to make their schools more environmentally friendly. The children and supporting teachers attend a training session at the beginning of the year at Sir John Lawes School. Following the training, pupils choose, plan and action one activity per term to help make their school more environmentally friendly.

St Albans Mayor takes part in fire station open day More than 4,000 visitors joined Cllr Annie Brewster, Mayor of St Albans City and District, when she visited St Albans Fire Station open day on Sunday 1st September. Visitors saw demonstrations related to the work of the Fire and Rescue Service. Fire fighters used scrap cars to demonstrate the different methods of cutting into vehicles to rescue people trapped inside after a road traffic accident. People also watched a safety demonstration of what happens if oil, such as in a deep fat fryer, is heated too much. They were shown the correct way to deal with this, and the danger of trying to use water to quench burning oil.

including physical rehabilitation and recuperation.

Exciting activities were also enjoyed by visitors of all ages, including a barbecue, sand pictures, a merry-go-round and stalls. In addition, a teddy bear parachute drop provided entertainment on the day. The day helped funds raise funds for The Fire Fighters’ Charity which provides support to members of the fire and rescue community,

Cllr Annie Brewster, Mayor of St Albans City and District, said: “What a great way to learn more about our Fire Service with, literally, some handson experience at the excellently run Fire Station Open Day. It is most reassuring to know that St Albans District is protected by such skilled fire and rescue experts. I am delighted so many people enjoyed the day, and am very grateful to everyone who worked hard to make it so much fun for us all.”

HERTS 10K THE RACE IS ON Runners and walkers are signing up in their hundreds for the HERTS 10K on 13 October 2013 at Rothamsted Research, Harpenden. Following on from last year’s sell-out event organisers have seen a huge surge in demand for places.

She went on to add, “The atmosphere on race day is fantastic and it is great to see so many people from the local community coming out to support the HERTS 10K.

The HERTS 10K route takes people through the beautiful countryside around Rothamsted Research and includes a mix of cross country and roads. The event is open to runners of all abilities and walkers, and for many it will be the first time they take part in an organised run.

The HERTS 10K is the single biggest fundraising event for the St Albans based hospice and everyone who takes part is encouraged to raised sponsorship for the charity. Gillian Barnett Fundraising Director for Grove House said,“Over the past 7 years runners have raised over £700,000 for the hospice and this money is provides a vital part of the £6.5 million funding we need to raise each year. Whether you are a first time runner or are looking to improve on your personal best running time we are encouraging everyone to raise or donate as much as they feel able.”

From the runners in fancy dress and the walkers at the back to the elite runners it is clear to see how much everyone enjoys taking part in the event.” Friends and family are encouraged to come along and support your run.The start and finish area at Rothamsted provides ample space for spectators to cheer on the runners as they cross the line. Splitting Assets - Is Mediation For You? Are you separating from your husband, wife, or partner? Are there financial issues to be resolved? Are you able to resolve the arrangements for the children, or is this proving difficult? It can be very difficult to speak directly to a person you are separating from. Discussions may start off reasonably with the intention of resolving matters that you need to sort out between you but can quickly become emotionally charged. Sometimes, the only way may be for communication to be between solicitors. However, mediation can provide a way forward. It enables you to speak directly to each other but in the presence of a mediator. The role of the mediator is to assist you in reaching solutions. Mediators usually meet you individually and then, subject to your agreement, both of you together. This is known as a Mediation Information Assessment Meeting (MIAM). This enables you to fully understand the process, how it will take place and what you can expect from it. Attending a MIAM does not commit either of you to going forward with mediation.

Mediation can help resolve the arrangements for the care of children, financial matters, pensions, what to do with the family home, the mortgage, re-housing and how you and your ex-partner will communicate going forward. The mediator can also provide information (e.g. pension sharing orders can only be obtained as part of divorce).

Will I still need a solicitor? If you feel it would be difficult to try and resolve matters in mediation without knowing what your legal rights are, or how a Court might resolve matters you can see a solicitor before or during the mediation. At the end the mediator will provide you with a Memorandum of Understanding setting out the options you have explored and any conclusions reached. If mediation is about finances s/he will also provide you with an Open Financial Statement. For further information about mediation, SA Law’s family services or if you would like to discuss a particular matter in more detail contact Marilyn Bell.

The mediator will assist you in identifying what needs to be resolved. The mediator will go through with you what information is to be provided before you can consider the options, which in some cases is limited by the assets available.

When is Mediation helpful? Most people prefer to have a solution that they have agreed between them rather than one imposed by the Court. This is particularly important when there are children involved. For example, if one of you feels that the proposal being put forward by the other is not in the children’s best interest mediation is an opportunity for you to raise all of your concerns face-toface and expect the other parent to respond. Cognisense™ from CMC The growing demands of financial regulaon present serious challenges for those responsible for managing bank data:

• • • • • • •

Current plaorms result in mulple manual intervenons, which are prone to error Most current systems focus on singular regulatory regimes Regulaon is moving toward trusted, systemic data and risk informaon aggregaon, as mandatory governance Counter party informaon is ‘locked-in’ to legal documentaon There is no data standard for raw regulatory data There is no data standard for regulatory data aggregates There is no readily available self-service reporng to mulple channels and devices

The soluon: Cognisense™ Cognisense from Capital Markets Consulng brings together data from mulple systems and assembles it into pre-configured data aggregates ready for regulatory reporng. Cognisense is your short-cut to regulatory reporng which can help make sense of even the most complex regulatory data environment. With Cognisense, the results you get will accommodate long term architectural goals, whilst ensuring consistent, mely reporng and coherent regulatory compliance. The key to Cognisense is data virtualisaon. The most appropriate source data can be garnered from primary transaconal systems with the use of either nave or generic data adaptors before being integrated within the virtualised environment. Controlled transformaons and enrichment can take place under strict quality management and governance rules and reporng can then be undertaken according to individual requirements. This produces mely, consistent, coherent reports with minimal interrupon to crical systems. This way banks can get on top of reporng data issues while leaving data in its current locaon. This will ensure that data is not further copied around the organisaon and limits further data decay. Data can be accessed in real me as it is pulled from source systems as required.

The Hauntings Projects builds on a previous project by the Museums Service, called So Very Superstitious; in 2012, local people shared their superstitions. One of the most commonly shared local superstitions was that of the whispering tree (also known as the Witch’s Tree or the Silent Tree)

The So Very Superstitious project made it clear that there is much more to be discovered about St Albans’ paranormal history. Participants in The Hauntings Project, will therefore be invited to research books, buildings and the internet to find the strangest and scariest stories the city has to offer. They will then create and deliver an exciting and engaging event inspired by these stories for the night of Halloween. The Hauntings Project starts on Sunday 8th September 2 – 4pm at Verulamium Museum and occurs every Sunday until 20th October. Finally, on Halloween night 31st October participants will stage the public event they have created.

“There is a tree beside the Abbey, in Sumpter Yard, it hangs over the footpath. I was always told that when you walk under the tree you have to be silent or else you’ll never find your way home.”

Although the theme of the project is already set participants will have a great deal of freedom to develop how it is delivered and the content and style of the Halloween event. This style of working follows on from a recent project at the Museum of St Albans, titled ‘Blood, Lust and Roses’. In this project, members of the public developed, scripted and acted in a soap opera style film based on the Wars of the Roses. The process of getting information from fact based history research into an accessible and entertaining piece of drama was fascinating and sometimes involved a very real sense of discovery for participants, as a group and as individuals. One participant has even been inspired to try and take up writing full time. The most important thing during these projects is the process and the ways in which people develop ideas and seek to bring stories to life. For The Hauntings Project this will be especially important as not all of the stories will be based on historic fact. The night of Halloween can be one of the most fun of the entire year and it is a really exciting opportunity for participants to create a brand new event for St Albans this year. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Adam Ditchburn on: 01727 751815 or email adam.ditchburn@stalbans.gov.uk.

The consequences of what happens to you if you talk underneath the tree varies in the telling from person to person. Some people feel so strongly about it that if they are talking on a mobile phone they will hang up the call before walking beneath the branches. 50

A record number (1,447) of UK sites have received a Green Flag Award this year ensuring that even more of us now have access to well managed, high-quality green spaces so important for health and leisure activities. ‘I am absolutely delighted that the Town Council has been awarded the Green Flag for the 7th year running, this is a great tribute to all the hard work that has taken place and a wonderful achievement for our community.’ Town Mayor Councillor Rosemary Farmer. Cllr Daniel Chichester-Miles, Portfolio Holder for Environment for St Albans City and District Council, said: ”This is the first time that Verulamium Park has received one of these prestigious awards. 56

It joins our other parks and open spaces with a track record in winning Green Flag awards. This is the sixth year in a row that Clarence Park, Rothamsted Park and Sopwell Nunnery are winners of a Green Flag award and the third for Bricket Wood. I am delighted that Verulamium is finally receiving the recognition it deserves after some years of trying. It is a place our whole community can enjoy and be proud of.” St Albans City and District Council works in partnership with its contractors John O’Conner to maintain the award-winning parks and green spaces. Neil Cain, Operations Director for John O’Conner, said, “We are delighted that these parks and green spaces have won national Green Flag awards. The awards recognise the high standards achieved by the Council and our team in maintaining these areas for the enjoyment of residents and visitors to the District.” The Green Flag scheme helps ensure that everyone can access well-managed, high-quality green spaces that are important for health and leisure activities. Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd said, “We are thrilled to announce yet another record-breaking year for Green Flag Award parks and green spaces. “A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for the hard work and dedication of all the parks managers, staff and volunteers who have helped to create these fantastic places for all to enjoy. “Quality green spaces are absolutely essential to happy, healthy communities. They are fundamental to our quality of life, whether in cities, towns or villages. That is why it is so significant that we have given out more awards than ever before.”

Older people get involved in Council’s Health and Wellbeing Programme 155 residents took part in the St Albans City and District Council’s Health and Wellbeing programme. The Council devised the programme in partnership with Oaklands College, to share healthy eating skills with older people.

The Health and Wellbeing programme is one of the Council’s initiatives for older people. Cllr Brian Ellis, Portfolio Holder for Housing, St Albans City and District Council, said, “We are keen to give older people in the District a voice in the decisions that directly impact their quality of life. The Health and Wellbeing programme is one of the Council’s initiatives to help achieve this. I am delighted that it is so successful. Many congratulations to all those who took part in the programme and I hope they get great pleasure from their improved cooking skills.” The Older People’s Forum meets in different locations in the district, giving older people a voice in decisions that impact their lives. The forum supports the UK Older People’s Day which is a national celebration of the achievements and contributions that older people make to our society.

Two participants with a combined age of 170, won an award for their achievements. Mrs Pat Saban and Mrs Kath Weaver were recognised by Hertfordshire Adult Family Learners in the Overcoming Challenges category. The two ladies are good friends and enrolled on the healthy eating and practical cookery course together; Kath prepared the food whilst sitting because she cannot stand for long periods. Pat assisted her friend and they both enjoyed cooking the different recipes. Mrs Pat Saban, who runs a club for older people in St Albans, commented, “I really enjoyed being part of something and the food was great too.”

A “Guide to Services for Older People” booklet is published by the Council in collaboration with the Centre for Voluntary Services. The guide provides an alphabetical list of information on a range of topics, including benefits, holidays, leisure, social clubs and transport. It is available as a download at - http://www.stalbans.gov.uk/ community-and-living/retirement. Free copies will be distributed at the Older People’s Forum meetings* and through other groups, or can be collected in person from the Civic Centre while stocks last. *The next Older People’s Forum meets on Tuesday 3 December between 10-12pm in Redbourn Parish Centre. More information is available online: www.stalbans.gov.uk/communityand-living/retirement/

The Perfect Halloween Pumpkin! Things You’ll Need.

Newspaper, Pumpkin, Felt-tip Pen or pencil, Sharp Knife, Tea Light. 1.

Select a fresh pumpkin in a shape that pleases you. Some people prefer their pumpkins low and round, while others like them tall and oval-shaped but it’s up to you.

2.

Draw a circle or hexagon on the top of the pumpkin in preparation for making an opening large enough for your hand to reach through.

3.

Cut through the stem end of the pumpkin along your outline with a sharp knife. Use a back-and-forth slicing motion to cut through the thick, tough skin.

4. Remove the stem end, which will act as a lid, making sure you scrape off any seeds or pulp on to the newspaper. 5.

Use a large spoon to scoop out the seeds and pulp from inside the pumpkin.

6. After you have emptied out the insides, draw a pattern for the face with a felt-tip pen, or scribe the lines into the skin using a pencil. Make sure to make the eyes, nose and mouth large enough to get the full effect later. 7.

Follow your pattern as you cut all the way through the pumpkin.

8.

Push the cut-out features gently from the inside of the pumpkin and discard the pieces.

9.

Place a tea light inside the pumpkin to create an eerie glow.

10.

Stand back and admire your handy work!

PETS

CORNER

We all love our family pets but often find ourselves in a dilemma about who can look after them when we either go out for the day, are working or going on holiday.

you are happy with who will be walking your dog, and if it is boarding then check that their garden is fully dog proof.

Sometimes it’s just extra help on the odd occasion that is required. We are fortunate in Harpenden to have some very good dog walking and home boarding services, but always check to make sure that these services have full insurance both for public liability and accident.

Home boarders will require your dog to be up to date with vaccinations, worming and flea treatments. Most home boarders will exercise your dog twice a day and your dog will be in a home from home environment, having plenty of fun, leaving you with peace of mind while you are away.

It is always advisable to visit the dog walking/ boarding place that you have selected, to ensure that

2 0 1 3 Film Guide 2013 by Chris Jelf.

Classic Film Review - The Breakfast Club. The Breakfast Club is a “coming of age” film that constitutes much deeper philosophical implications than the innocent title

may suggest. It is voted as the Greatest High school movie of all time by Entertainment Weekly, and the true depth of the influence of this film explains why. Admittedly, I was only reminded of the film when I was reading an obituary on J.D. Salinger, whose revolutionary novel Catcher In the Rye apparently influenced the making ofThe Breakfast Club.

Rush Review Rush is without a doubt my selection for 2013 Film of theYear, closely followed by Ryan Gosling’s Place beyond the Pines. I am sure some have been enveloped by the promotional hype behind the biopic about James Hunts’ Formula One career, and will be rushing to watch the story of one of F1’s greatest rivalries. Have you not, I strongly recommend a viewing. The film is not designed solely for a target audience of motor car racing enthusiasts, in fact, quite the opposite. My partner came with me & she thoroughly enjoyed it. Obviously the backdrop of the film is racing, but director Ron Howard concentrates on Hunts’ playboy lifestyle, the rivalry with Niki Lauda, & its subsequent trials & tribulations during the 1976 season.

The Breakfast Club attempts and succeeds in displaying immoral portrayals of stereotypes and even prejudice, and displays the realism of problems facing teenagers, such as sex, bullying and prejudice. The Breakfast Club paved the way for the so-called “Brat Pack” of the 80s, which included Emilio Estevez,Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson and Molly Ringwald. The age old catchphrase, “do not judge a book by its cover”, seems very appropriate to the message that director John Hughes successfully attempts to portray. The film starts out with five teenagers all in Saturday detention for different reasons. Hughes sets every character as a member of a different social division.

Director Ron Howard has created a masterpiece that portrays the womanising, partying & care free attitude of the legendary James Hunt. Howard is a great choice of director for this film. His previous successes include Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, & Frost/Nixon. Interesting to note, Howard has never sort to glamorize or sexualise any of his films, & he has succeeded in portraying the glamour of the life of a jet setting, death defying, & determined Formula One driver. Howard very effectively displays the dangers of a dangerous sport, & in it, subconsciously ties the viewer into sympathising with the characters.

The reason for the success of this film is that everybody can relate to it. It gives adults the chance to reminisce, and teenagers the chance to directly relate to their problems, as the characters are a direct representation of the social divide obvious in the schooling structure and in every walk of life. It further displays how prejudice is a negative factor in life. By the end of the Saturday detention, all the characters have become a really close bunch of friends, and all are ignoring the stereotypical social divide. This is a heartwarming piece of cinema and strangely the conclusion of the film defies all stereotyped prejudices. However, The Breakfast Club is not a film that everybody will enjoy; it is fairly slow paced, and the main target audience remains the age parallel to the age of the characters.

Thor actor Chris Hemsworth delivers the Hunt character brilliantly. He captures the free spirit of one of the 20th Centuries most intriguing sports stars, glamorizing the film simultaneously. His Austrian counterpart is played by Daniel Bruhl from Inglorious Basterds. The chemistry, camaraderie & often fierce banter is electric. The greatest motor based film ever made.

The Benefits of Yoga by April Nunes Tucker (PhD) I am writing this short article in hopes that you, dear reader, will try yoga (if you haven’t already). In reading this you will have your own idea of what yoga is, however vague or clear that may be. What I think is important to state here is that, yoga is notonlya series of physical exercises (but please still come to class if getting fit is your aim!) As you attend more and more classes perhaps the yoga will start to draw you in, perhaps it will start to bring you a sense of calm, perhaps you will notice that you feel better after class than you did before class and perhaps you will become interested in cultivating a peaceful mind. My teacher Baba HariDass, the silent monk who first introduced me to yoga in the early 1990s says,“The aim of life is to attain peace. No one can give us peace. We can’t buy or borrow it. We have to cultivate it by practising yoga.”

Yoga is a practice which encompasses the whole human being and the benefits can be profound, beyond purely physical. I thought it may be best to acquire a series of first-hand accounts of the benefits of yoga from my students and contemporaries in order to reveal the benefits that people really do experience by practising yoga. Here are a few: “A regular yoga practice will deliver a stronger healthier body, give you a place to rest your mind, will develop confidence and magically you will find yourself connecting to a natural awareness; which is not brought to our attention through education, nor TV or found amongst friends and family… give yourself a gift and try it!” Martin Forsythe (yoga teacheratThe Breathing Space and owner of Forsythe Fireplaces), Harpenden, UK

CranioSacral Therapy

The Healing Power of Gentle Touch - by Lesley Nash The types of problems for which people seek treatment include stress and tension related disorders, musculoskeletal pain, migraines, headaches, brain and spinal cord injuries, and acute or chronic conditions. By freeing the central nervous system to perform at it’s best, CST may reduce pain and stress, enhancing your health and well-being.

In general CranioSacral Therapy (CST) can improve our body’s ability to take better care of us. It helps release tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunctions, improves whole-body health and performance. Few body structures have more influence over your health and well-being than the central nervous system. And few body systems have more impact on your central nervous system than the craniosacral system - which consists of bones, soft tissue and fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord.

Your Upledger trained therapist will evaluate the rhythm and motion of the craniosacral system through touch. Carefully ‘listening’ with hands to the whole body, your practitioner can locate areas of restriction and trace their origin. CST is not prescriptive in its approach, so we work by listening to and following what it feels your body tissues need.

Every day we endure stresses and strains that our bodies absorb. But we can only handle so much tension before our tissues begin to tighten or change.

If you are curious how this approach may be helpful for you, please get in touch.

Craniosacral techniques can release these tensions to allow the entire body to relax and self-correct.

Offering: Scenar Therapy CranioSacral Therapy Clinical & Remedial Massage Deep Tissue & Sports Massage Detox & Weight Management Common conditions that respond well to our treatments are: Neck & Shoulder pain; Whiplash Headaches; Migranes Back Pain; Sciatica Frozen Shoulder Sports Injuries

A recent patient says: … started to jog as part of a get fit initiative. However, some six weeks in I began to experience knee and thigh pains… [diagnosed as iliotibial band injury] with the suggestion I stop before doing more damage. After a recommendation of the skills of local osteopath, Gillian Brown, I made an appointment… within weeks I was jogging nearly two miles a session. I feel balanced and the pains have gone. Main Course

Meatballs Serves: 4

Method:

Prep: 30 minutes Cook: 30 to 60 minutes

Place the beef and pork mince in a large bowl and add the onion, garlic, breadcrumbs and dried herbs. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and mix well with clean hands. Divide the mixture into 20 portions and roll into small, neat balls.

Ingredients:

For the meatballs 250g/9oz lean beef mince 250g/9oz pork mince 1 small onion, very finely chopped 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 25g/1oz fresh white breadcrumbs 2 tsp dried mixed herbs sea salt & freshly ground black pepper 2 tsp sunflower oil For the gravy 1 tbsp sunflower oil 1 medium onion, finely sliced 1 tbsp plain flour 150ml/5fl oz red wine 300ml/10fl oz beef stock made with one beef stock cube 1 tbsp tomato purée

Heat the sunflower oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the meatballs for 6–8 minutes, or until nicely browned on all sides. Roll the meatballs around in the pan as they brown to prevent them from becoming flattened on one side. Transfer the meatballs to a large lidded saucepan. To make the gravy, heat the sunflower oil in the frying pan and gently fry the onion over a low heat for five minutes, or until softened, stirring regularly. Sprinkle the flour into the pan and stir well. Slowly add the red wine, stock and tomato purée, stirring constantly. Pour the gravy over the meatballs and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat, cover the pan with a lid and leave to simmer gently over a low heat for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove the lid and increase the heat. Boil the gravy for another 3–5 minutes or until thickened. Season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve. 98

NEW COLLECTION SCHEME BOOSTS RECYCLING

Residents involved in the early stages of a new recycling scheme in the District have increased the amount of waste they recycle. St Albans City and District Council’s new collection scheme allows people to recycle a wider range of plastics and removes cardboard from the green waste. The new scheme is being rolled out gradually around the District and is currently in operation in Redbourn and Harpenden. At a meeting Cabinet heard that if the success of the Redbourn trial was repeated across the District this would produce a recycling rate of approximately 54%. Once the scheme comes to your area, you will be able to recycle a wider range of plastics, including margarine tubs, fruit punnets and food trays.

In the meantime, please prepare for the changes by removing all shiny cardboard from your green waste otherwise it has to be rejected and sent to landfill. Shiny cardboard means all printed cardboard such as cereal and washing powder boxes and cartons used to store frozen food. Residents will also receive a free food recycling caddy and a starter pack of compostable liners. The aim is to make it easier to recycle food, via the green bin, rather than disposing of it in the black bin. Food in the black bin ends up as landfill and increases costs to the taxpayer. Cllr Daniel Chichester-Miles, Portfolio Holder for Environment at St Albans City and District Council, said: “I want to thank everyone in Redbourn and Harpenden who welcomed the new scheme and helped increase recycling in their area. It is one of the Council’s priority projects to boost recycling beyond 60% by 2015. Continued on opposite page.

New Collection Scheme - Continued. The pilot results indicate that the new scheme, once rolled out, will help increase the amount of material collected for recycling across the District.” “One key aspect of the new scheme is the removal of cardboard from the green waste. Currently, some green waste is being contaminated with shiny cardboard that cannot be composted and is being sent to landfill. If your street has not moved to the new collection system, please remove shiny cardboard from your green waste and place it in your black bin instead. “This is more important than ever as the District’s household recycling and composting rate fell slightly to 49% in the last year. This is partly due to contamination of green waste, but also due to a smaller amount of garden waste being collected as a result of poor weather.”

Reviews underpin Council’s plans to improve planning service St Albans City and District Council has published a report on its planning service following a recent ‘peer review’ process. Peer review is used by councils to identify ways to improve public services. The Council invited representatives and experts from other councils and local government bodies to look in detail at its planning service. The Council will use the peer review process as part of its plans to develop the service and identify opportunities for improvement and change. The Council’s Interim Head of Planning and Building Control, Simon Rowberry, is also reviewing the Council’s planning function. The Council is also publishing the first part of this review which takes an in-depth look at the current planning committee arrangements. The internal review takes into account the findings and recommendations of the peer review.

Cllr Julian Daly, Leader of the Council, and Portfolio Holder for Planning and Building Control commented: “We asked other councils and experts to help us identify how we can best develop our planning service for residents and other customers. “We need to ensure that our planning service is fit for the future. We will use their observations and recommendations to help us identify actions we can take to develop our planning service. “I will be working with fellow councillors over the next few months to take forward the recommendations of both the peer appraisal and the internal review.” The next stage will be a period of consultation with councillors and the development of an improvement action plan.

HOUSING ALLOCATIONS POLICY REVISED St Albans City and District Council is updating its policy on allocating council homes to make better use of available housing. The current allocations policy was introduced in December 2012 after the Localism Act gave local authorities greater discretion over the priority given to applicants. The policy has recently been reviewed to ensure that it is working effectively, enabling people on the Housing Register to find homes or downsize.

• Help individuals and families wishing to downsize, for example, people wishing to downsize will be able move with their adult children, if the adult children have always lived at home. • Make further provision for servicemen and women to reflect changes in national legislation.

The main changes aim to: • Increase the speed at which parents with one child are housed. They will now be offered a one or two-bedroom home depending on which becomes available first. This also helps to better match demand for one bedroom properties from those seeking to downsize as a result of the changes to the spare room subsidy.

The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) and The Centre for Voluntary Service are moving to the Civic Centre in St Albans on a permanent basis. They have been providing information and advice sessions here since November 2011 at a joint local services centre formed with St Albans City and District Council. David Monk, CAB Chief Executive Officer, said: “We are closing our offices in London Road and moving to our own accommodation within the Civic Centre in St Albans. The move offers much improved accommodation in a more central location. We think the move is a fantastic opportunity to help clients access our services more easily so that we can make sure they get the help they need to solve their problems in a way which remains completely confidential, impartial, independent and free.” Laura Cronshaw, Chief Executive at St Albans Centre for Voluntary Service said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to work more closely with partners to support the most disadvantaged in our community.

We hope that our move to a very accessible location will result in more people volunteering. We will also continue to provide essential support and advice services to the many hundreds of voluntary groups in the District who need our help.” St Albans City and District Council Leader, Julian Daly commented:“I am very pleased to welcome the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and the Centre for Voluntary Service to join the Council at the Civic Centre. It makes a great deal of sense to offer services to residents from one location and to share facilities with partners where we can.We want to make it as easy as possible for residents to access services and to offer a joined up approach wherever possible.” Other organisations offering information and advice services from the Civic Centre include St Albans District Credit Union, Oaklands College, Youth Connexions, Aldwyck Housing Group and Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association.

DRIVE TO SPEED UP PROCESSING OF BENEFITS CLAIMS

MGA Decorating Services Quality Decorating at Sensible Prices

St Albans City and District Council is taking steps to tackle delays in processing benefits claims by providing extra resources. In addition, applicants can help us to process their claims more quickly by providing all requested information when they submit their claim; if this is not available there will be a delay in assessing the claims until the required information is received. At a meeting Cabinet heard about the increased time taken to complete the processing of new Council Tax support and Housing Benefit claims. This is in part due to the high volume of data needing to be processed following the introduction of weekly updates of people’s circumstances by government agencies*. The June 2013 caseload for active claims is 38% higher than the same time last year. Extra resources have been provided to the benefits team to help them process claims more quickly.

COUNCIL WORKING HARD TO IMPROVE

R E C YC L I N G St Albans City & District Council is distributing food caddies to 50,000 homes in the district as part of its campaign to boost recycling. Around 30% of household waste going to landfill is food waste. Therefore we want to make it as easy as possible for people to recycle their food waste, rather than send it to landfill via their black bins. They aim to get recycling up to 60% from the current 50% level. Tabletop-sized food caddies and a starter pack of 50 paper liners were delivered to homes in the district over the summer. Flats are not currently included, however the Council hopes to be able to extend the caddies to flats in the future.

The caddies are designed to hold food waste, both cooked and raw, which can then be transferred to the green wheeled waste bins or bags for recycling. Food waste will be treated with other green waste and turned into compost. The Council is also collecting a range of additional plastics (yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, meat trays, fruit punnets, etc.) as part of its recycling drive. Cllr Julian Daly, Leader of St Albans City and District Council commented, “We are investing in these food caddies to make it easier for people to recycle their food waste. If we recycle more, we can cut down on landfill which will save money to spend on priority areas and is less harmful to the environment. It’s up to all of us to do our bit to recycle more. The Council will do its utmost to help people recycle as much as possible.”

Rogue traders Hertfordshire Trading Standards is advising residents to always say NO to traders who turn up uninvited on the doorstep. Rogue builders and gardeners often trick people into paying high prices for unnecessary or shoddy work and give false names and addresses. The following advice is given: • Only deal with callers by appointment • Always ask for ID and check it carefully • Keep front and back doors locked • Fit a door bar/chain and use it • Do not keep large sums of money in the home • Do not buy goods or services at the door • Don’t be a victim, say NO to doorstep callers. For the majority of contracts made at your home (both invited and uninvited visits), you will be entitled to a seven-day cooling-off period.

The trader should give you a cancellation notice explaining your rights, and he must not start work within the seven days without you requesting him to do so in writing. If the trader fails to comply then he is breaking the law and the contract is unenforceable against you, you don’t have to pay. If you need to have home improvements carried out, consider using a Trustmark-registered trader. www.hertdirect.org/trustmark or call Harpenden Directory on 01582 469117.

OUT IN THE GARDEN

Gardens

We spend so much time out in the garden over the summer months and I am always sad when summer draws to a close. All of that time spent planting, pruning, sowing, protecting and harvesting has come to an end, and I begin to wonder what I will do with all of my spare time (!) Well this year, I am going to continue to get outside and make sure my vegetable patch has a greater chance of thriving. There are vegetables which will survive the lowering temperatures and hopefully flourish as the days begin to get shorter. BROAD BEANS If the beans are in an exposed position and grow too tall (above a foot), they can wave around and split, so put in canes or sticks and string.Waste not want not- don’t forget, broad bean tops are as delicious as the bean itself - try them wilted with butter.

PEAS AND PEA SHOOTS For a late spring crop, it’s worth trying sowing seeds now. As with broad beans, don’t forget the other parts of the plant! Pea shoots are very fashionable and can be found on supermarket shelves. GARLIC If you are an amateur gardener and want to get started with an easy crop, try garlic!

You can still sow a really hardy variety and plant it out under fleece or a perforated polythene sheet. LAMBS LETTUCE It is a perfect winter crop as it does not need high light levels and tolerates low temperatures; it can be sown up until the end of October outside; it can be picked until December or into the new year with some fleece or milder weather.

Redbourn MOT has been working hard over the last year to provide the area with one of the best MOT test facilities available. With two large state of the art drive through test lanes testing various types of vehicle with a potential for a third lane to include motorbike testing. The business focuses completely on MOT Testing, with no repairs / parts facilities. Customers can be assured of a fair test and peace of mind, the centre is not going to try to create work to gain extra business. Only light bulbs and windscreen wiper blades are available. It’s not just the testing area itself that’s state-of-the-art, the reception area has been designed to create a warm and welcoming environment for men, women & children, with a glass-walled viewing area, flat screen TVs, complete drinks facilities and toys for children, as well as disabled and Baby Changing facilities available in restrooms, so unusually well looked after for an MOT test centre that they wouldn’t be out of place in a fine dining restaurant! Redbourn MOT is an efficiently run business with no compromise on quality or customer service. Whether you’re a car, van or motor home owner there is no need to make an appointment, just drive in. The Centre is easily found just off the Redbourn bypass & high street roundabout where there are plenty of parking spaces available. It’s open for testing Monday - Friday 8am - 6pm and Saturday 8am - 1pm (closed Sundays & Bank Holidays).

We are the centre you can trust!

JUST MOT’S NO SPARES, REPAIRS OR SALES PRESSURE. JUST A FAIR TEST!
