HARPENDEN MUSEUM UPDATE FROM HARPENDEN HISTORY

With the installation of roller racking in the Les Casey Archive Room earlier this year, we have begun to make real progress toward opening a Museum for Harpenden in the Eric Morecambe Centre. Our extensive collection of original works of art and large photographs is now safely stored in the racking and we have started to move the document archive from the History Room in Park Hall to the Museum.

The display space in the Museum resembles a take-away pizza emporium as there is hundreds of archive boxes temporarily stacked there. These boxes are purpose made for archive documents and photographs. They are gradually being taken to Park Hall, filled with material and returned to the museum so, as the stacks diminish it means more items are being transferred to their permanent home.

The fit-out of the Museum is in the hands of Qwerk, a museum design company based in Luton.Their most recent project has been the Raphael exhibition at the National Gallery and now that this is in place, they can turn their attention to our Harpenden Museum. Harpenden and District Local History Society is an entirely volunteer run organisation and although the main thrust is to get the Museum up and running, our other activities, monthly evening meetings, answering enquiries, giving talks to groups, etc. have not ceased.

We are fortunate to have the support of Harpenden Town Council, St Albans City Council and especially our friends and colleagues of St Albans Museum Services.Their support and yours will enable us to realise our aim of a Museum for Harpenden in which we can take pride in.

We are extremely hopefully that the Museum will be open this year. www.harpenden-history.org.uk

People in Harpenden care passionately about their Town and its green spaces and behind the scenes, there is an army of volunteers helping the local community.

There are always many volunteering opportunities, providing the perfect excuse to spend time outdoors while contributing to your local environment.

Harpenden Town Council organises Volunteer Project Days which involve anything from clearing shrubs and restoring heather on the Common, to planting trees at Rothamsted Park. Additionally we work regularly with the Batford Springs Local Nature Reserve volunteers who carry out incredible work to maintain and improve this amazing local resource.

HTC also work with local experts & experienced volunteers who support us in carrying out ecological surveys including bat, bee & butterfly surveys.

Harpenden Snow Angels are a group of local residents who volunteer to clear snow and ice from the footways and pathways in their local area. As a Snow Angel, you can contribute to the safety of your community, especially in smaller, residential roads and pedestrian routes.

We’ll arrange for the collection/delivery of your Snow Angel Kit, which includes: a bag of grit, a branded hi-visibility vest, protective gloves & a snow shovel.

HTC Litter Angels initiative enables members of the community to assist in keeping the Town Council’s land free from litter and debris. Volunteers can sign up to help pick up litter in an area, and during times, convenient to themselves.

HTC supply a Litter Angels pack which includes a litter picker, high vis waist coat, protective gloves and a roll of black sacks.

If you’re interested in volunteering please contact Alex or Tim: alexander.melson@harpenden.gov. uk or tim.austin-lomas@harpenden.gov.uk or call them on 01582 463667.

Gillian Brown, Osteopath and co-owner of Harpenden Sportsnspinal clinic helps many patients find a solution to their unresolved back and neck pain using IDD therapy (Intervertebral disc decompression). This cutting-edge medical technology deals with more severe spinal issues that require more than manual therapy.

Don’t take our word for it....

"IDD Therapy was my last resort after over a year of excruciating leg and back pain. The pain was affecting both my work and sleeping and making me feel depressed. I found the treatment very relaxing and even fell asleep during treatments. It has been life-changing and after 15 sessions I am now pain free. I would highly recommend to you if you have sciatica“

Monica, Harpenden: "After 2 years of not being able to compete at my favourite sport, tennis, I have finally found a treatment that is getting me active again. Gillian Brown at Sportsnspinal in Harpenden recommended this brilliant method of traction using the latest technology called IDD. It's helping release the pressure on my lower back discs and the results are phenomenal. I've gone from being scared to run to competing at international level in a year. I get to lie down on the machine for 26 mins of chill time while it works its magic. No regrets here"

IN MEMORY OF MY FATHER TERRENCE JOHN BRABANT

Herts Musical Memories was founded April 2017 by Kerry Brabant in order to continue ‘Singing for the Brain’, the service originally provided by the Alzheimer’s Society. This service was due to be discontinued due to changes to Hertfordshire County Council funding. It seemed unthinkable to Kerry, as an ex Singing for the Brain leader, that this service should no longer be available to people in Hertfordshire. Personal experience had shown her just how important singing and music is for people with dementia.

‘My father had vascular dementia, and towards the end of his illness he could no longer speak - but we could still communicate though singing. Towards the end of his life he was very ill and in a lot of pain. I put on the radio and a song came on that we both recognised. As I joined in with the music, he lifted his head and we sang together, it was the last moment we ever shared together.’ Kerry Brabant.

It is this ability for people with dementia to connect though music that makes Herts Musical Memories singing sessions so special and so valuable for those who attend.

1010
Herts Musical memories delivers singing sessions for people living with dementia and their careers. There is no requirement to sing, just be prepared to join in and laugh a lot! We meet most Fridays from 1:30-3:00 at the Harpenden Trust Centre. Please call 0208 950 5757 for more information.

Cloudy2Clear, A Local Service With A Smile.

I think we can all agree that the sooner we see the back of 2020 and this dreadful corona virus the better. That said, there are also some heart warming positives that we can take out of this situation. It has often been said that we can only really get to know one another and realise what is truly important in times of crisis. I think few would argue that in this case what has proven to be important is local community spirit.

When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear windows Stephen Moon it became clear that these values have been held dear for a number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of

supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money.

The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. Unfortunately we might be going through something similar again soon and the public can rest assured that we will be there to help again”.

10 ENERGY-SAVING TIPS FOR YOUR HOME

With energy bill’s going through the roof, below are ten energy saving tips to help reduce your energy usage, from British Gas.

1. Do full laundry loads

Half-load settings save very little energy, so a full load is much more energy efficient. Do fewer (but fuller-wash loads instead.

2. Use the eco setting

On your dishwasher or boiler, the eco setting heats water more slowly, using less energy. You get the same results; it just takes a little longer.

3. Don’t use standby mode

Unless switched off at the wall, appliances like your TV continue to use energy, costing the average UK home £35 per year. By using Smart Plugs you can switch off at the wall with a quick tap of the app – no need to reach behind the telly! Smart Plugs, like Alexa Plugs or Hive Plugs can be brought locally or online.

4. Careful with that kettle

When making tea or coffee, most of us fill the kettle right up.This means as a country we’re wasting around £68 million worth of energy a year. By filling your kettle just to the level you need, it could save you up to a third of the energy you have been using.

5. Switch to LED bulbs

Traditional bulbs are extremely inefficient. Modern LEDs are the opposite, and also last longer so are less wasteful too. Smart LED bulbs can help you save even more energy as you can switch them on and off remotely.

6. Use your microwave more

You’ll save energy because it’s quicker than using the oven or stove. It’s worth considering a slow cooker too, as they’re one of the most energy-efficient kitchen appliances.

7. Unplug all your chargers

Across the country, people are unnecessarily over-charging their mobile phones, MP3 players, and laptops. Instead, as soon as your device is fully charged, try and get into the habit of unplugging it. Not only will this save energy, it also prolongs battery life. It could also save you about £60 a year on your electricity bills.

8. Close your curtains at night

In the day it’s important to try to use as much natural - and free - heat (in the form of sunlight) as possible. But when dusk falls, closing your curtains will help your home retain that heat. This helps keep warmth in the room – but try not to drape them over radiators.

9. Turn down the temperature

With today’s effective washing machine detergents, there’s often no need to run your washing machine any higher than 30°C – clean clothes, energy saved, job done!

10. Update your heating system

New boiler models are impressively more efficient with energy and can make a real difference on your monthly bills, saving you up to £580 a year. Shop around for the best prices and also see if they have a range of flexible payment methods including interest-free credit.

The Perfect Halloween Pumpkin!

Things You’ll Need.

Newspaper, Pumpkin, Felt-tip Pen or pencil, Sharp Knife, Tea Light.

1. Select a fresh pumpkin in a shape that pleases you. Some people prefer their pumpkins low and round, while others like them tall and oval-shaped but it’s up to you.

2. Draw a circle or hexagon on the top of the pumpkin in preparation for making an opening large enough for your hand to reach through.

3. Cut through the stem end of the pumpkin along your outline with a sharp knife. Use a back-and-forth slicing motion to cut through the thick, tough skin.

4. Remove the stem end, which will act as a lid, making sure you scrape off any seeds or pulp on to the newspaper.

5. Use a large spoon to scoop out the seeds and pulp from inside the pumpkin.

6. After you have emptied out the insides, draw a pattern for the face with a felt-tip pen, or scribe the lines into the skin using a pencil. Make sure to make the eyes, nose and mouth large enough to get the full effect later.

7. Follow your pattern as you cut all the way through the pumpkin.

8. Push the cut-out features gently from the inside of the pumpkin and discard the pieces.

9. Place a tea light inside the pumpkin to create an eerie glow.

10. Stand back and admire your handy work!

The City and District of St Albans Tour Guides Association was founded in 1964, as an independent organisation.

Our guides are qualified to either Blue Badge or Green Badge level within the Institute of Tourist Guiding, and all have a comprehensive knowledge of local history and guiding techniques. St Albans City Guides are all volunteers, who have an enthusiasm and commitment to promoting the city of St Albans to local residents and visitors alike.

Walks take place on most weekends throughout the year, and members of the public are welcome to book in advance. We offer a wide variety of themed walks within our programme, reflecting the rich and diverse history of St Albans:

In addition to our public walks, we also cater for pre-booked private groups. Examples of such groups include local schoolchildren, overseas academics, staff outings and U3A history groups. In partnership with the Cathedral Guides, we now offer a combined City and Cathedral tour, which takes in both the magnificent cathedral and the city surrounding it.

Each walk costs £6 per person and must be booked in advance via www.ticketsource.co.uk/city-of-st-albans-tour-guides

Tickets will be available to buy in advance until one hour before the start time of the walk. Refunds will only be given if requested more than 48 hours before the start time of the walk. Tickets can be exchanged for an alternative date any time before the start of the walk which the tickets were originally purchased for. The AT Society is based in Harpenden. It is the only organisation in the UK providing specialist and friendly advice and support to people living with AT and their families, as well as working actively to improve services and to support and fund medical research with the aim of finding a cure for this cruel condition.

What is AT?

AT (or Ataxia Telangiectasia) is complex and variable. Diagnosis usually occurs when a child learns to walk and may start to appear clumsy or wobbly. The coordination problems start to affect speech and over time eating and swallowing are also affected. These problems often progress quite slowly until the age of 7 or 8 but by the age of 10 most children with AT will be making regular use of a wheelchair. On top of this, people with AT also have immune deficiency, and a high risk of developing cancer and lung disease. Consequently, they sadly have a life expectancy of around 25 years and therefore have to deal with the devastating terminal nature of AT too. Currently 1 in 300 people unknowingly carry the AT gene. The impact of AT on individuals and families is devastating.

Why Harpenden?

The Charity began in 1989 when 10 families who had children with this very rare condition met up at the Birmingham Children’s Hospice as a support group to discuss AT and share their experiences. One couple, Maureen and Vincent Poupard, who had two children with AT and live in Harpenden, took it upon themselves to start the charity. Initially they ran the AT Society from their Harpenden home, later moving to an office in Rothamsted and more recently the charity has moved to Thrales End.

Opportunities to get involved?

As a local charity, not only do we love it when local people get involved, we depend on it as a way to raise much needed funds to continue to be there for the people we support. We are always looking for corporate sponsors, so if you are part of a company that might be in a position to support us with fundraising, hosting an autumn quiz or with volunteers, we would love to hear from you!

We have lots of volunteer opportunities from September to December this year and we need Santa’s helpers to help with a variety of Christmas activities - selling charity Christmas cards, helping to secure prizes for our Christmas raffle, and with organising our Santa dash and Christmas concert. You can join us in the office, or work from home to suit your availability. We can also provide ideas and opportunities to undertake a variety of challenge events either individually or as a corporate team.

With a pint of lager containing the same amount of calories as a slice of pizza!

A standard glass of red or white wine (175ml) with 13% ABV could contain up to 160 calories, similar to a slice of Madeira cake

A large glass of wine (250ml) with 13% ABV can add 228 calories to your dinner? That’s similar to an ice cream or two fish fingers!

It’s a myth that drinks featuring clear spirits are low in calories. You might be surprised to hear that one vodka and coke made with a 25ml measure of 40% ABV vodka contains 110 calories – similar to a small slice of pizza. Clear spirits contain slightly fewer calories than dark spirits but the calories in vodka and other clear spirits can still quickly add up

Dark Spirits contain slightly more calories, a 25ml measure 40% ABV shot, like whisky, with mixer contains 106 calories, similar to a chocolate mousse.

Ordering a 50ml ‘double’ spirit measure with 37.5% ABV like gin and mixer contains 149 calories, similar to a chocolate filled pancake

To keep health risks from alcohol to a low level, the UK Chief Medical Officers’ (CMO) low risk alcohol unit guidelines advise it is safest not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis. Saving up your weekly units so you can drink them all on a Friday night is not the way to interpret the CMO’s advice, it’s best to spread your intake evenly across the week.

How many calories are in your favourite drink?

With Christmas around the corner, do you know what your favourite drink’s food equivalent is…

It’s all very well talking in units, but what does this really mean when you’re at the pub or having drinks with dinner at home?

The size and strength of your drink will determine the number of units it contains. Unfortunately it’s not as simple as one drink, one unit.

A glass of wine can range between just over one unit and more than three units, depending on the size of the glass and type of wine. And when you’re drinking at home, you tend to pour measures that are larger than you get in your local, so you could be regularly drinking far more than you think.

A great way to avoid losing track of how much alcohol you’re pouring out at home is to use one of drinkaware Unit and Measure Cups, available on their website for 90p.

Many people don’t have a realistic idea of how much they’re drinking.

A good place to start is by finding out just how many units there are in your favourite drink.

Visit: www.drinkaware.co.uk/understand-your-drinking/unit-calculator

Also take a self-assessment test online at www.drinkaware. co.uk/selfassessment to understand more about the impact of your drinking or visit www.drinkaware.co.uk for helpful tips and advice.

Drinkaware is an independent charity working to reduce alcohol misuse and harm in the UK. We’re here to help people make better choices about drinking.

Fry the mustard seeds for a minute or so until they sizzle and pop, then add the curry leaves and cook for a few more seconds until they crackle. Add the onion, ginger, garlic, chilli, lemongrass and a pinch of salt and stir for a few minutes until the onion softens. Tip in the chickpeas, tomato, curry powder and turmeric and keep stirring for 5-8 mins, until the tomato breaks down.

• STEP 4: Pour the coconut milk into the wok and stir, cooking for about 5 mins until slightly reduced. Add the remaining 2 tbsp tamarind, taste for seasoning, then add the kale, stirring for a couple of minutes until softened. Divide the squash between bowls, ladle in the curry sauce, then top with the coriander and coconut flakes, if using. Serve with warmed flatbreads.

AUTUMN JOBS

AROUND THE HOME

As October draws to a close, the clocks go back and the cold dark evenings set in, what better time to start fixing up your home and finish all of those jobs you promised yourself in the Summer.

To help keep your home looking its best, here are a few recommended household jobs you should think about doing this Autumn.

• Get your gutters cleaned - Now’s the time to clear gutters of moss, leaves and twigs and get broken guttering fixed in readiness for the Autumn / Winter weather

• Check doors, windows and fireplaces for drafts - There’s nothing worse than a draughty house in autumn and dealing with them now will keep you warm in the months ahead and save money on heating bills.

• Look at your thermostat - Setting your thermostat to an automatically lower temperature at night time when the temperatures begin to drop can save money on your heating bills.

• Get your boiler serviced - Whether this is a full service or a simple inspection by a Gas Safe engineer, keeping on top of your boiler’s status will not only avoid any horrible surprises but also potentially save you money on your heating bills

• Test devices - Device like smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors can run out of battery or become faulty after a time and in the autumn, having a fire on in your home means you are more likely to need them. Just give them a quick check and replace any batteries or devices where necessary.

Well this year, I am going to continue to get outside and make sure my vegetable patch has a greater chance of thriving. There are vegetables which will survive the lowering temperatures and hopefully flourish as the days begin to get shorter.

BROAD BEANS

If the beans are in an exposed position and grow too tall (above a foot), they can wave around and split, so put in canes or sticks and string. Waste not want not- don’t forget, broad bean tops are as delicious as the bean itself - try them wilted with butter.

PEAS AND PEA SHOOTS

For a late spring crop, it’s worth trying sowing seeds now. As with broad beans, don’t forget the other parts of the plant! Pea shoots are very fashionable and can be found on supermarket shelves.

GARLIC

If you are an amateur gardener and want to get started with an easy crop, try garlic!

Just because summer has drawn to an end and you are no longer able to dine al fresco, it doesn’t mean an end to salads! You can still sow a really hardy variety and plant it out under fleece or a perforated polythene sheet.

LAMBS LETTUCE

It is a perfect winter crop as it does not need high light levels and tolerates low temperatures; it can be sown up until the end of October outside; it can be picked until December or into the new year with some fleece or milder weather.

SPINACH

A versatile leafy vegetable; pick young leaves and gently wilt or add raw to salads. The big advantage of autumn sowing is that there is no tendency to bolt.

AUTUMN MOTORING

We all love the changing colours of autumn but for car owners there are a few jobs to do…

1. Antifreeze

Not just for winter, antifreeze is important all year round as it contains additives to prevent corrosion and improve summer cooling too. A frozen engine is very expensive to repair! Call K.S & K.G Tyler in Southdown on 01582 713328 or Victoria Garage in Batford on 01582 760551 to get some professional advice on Antifreeze. – see page 98 & 99 for their adverts.

2. Battery

This is one of the most common causes of breakdown at any time of year, but particularly in the winter when electrical loads are higher. If there’s any sign of the battery struggling now the time to change it. Available from Milehams A1 Motor Store 133 Southdown Rd, Harpenden, Hertfordshire, AL5 1PU. Tel: 01582 766333.

3. Bulbs

Check all bulbs regularly not forgetting brake lights and number plate lights.

The handbook will show you how to change bulbs, though some headlight bulbs may require a visit to the garage. Available from Milehams A1 Motor Store 133 Southdown Rd, Harpenden, Hertfordshire, AL5 1PU Tel: 01582 766333

4. Tyres

Check all tyres for condition, pressure and tread depth. The AA recommend at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring, so if the treads are getting low think about buying new tyres now. Call Big D’s tyres and get them fitted at your door at competitive prices. Big D’s Tyres Tel: 01582 467800 – see page 5 for advert.

5. Windscreen wipers and washer fluid Blades will last for two years at the most. New blades clear the screen more effectively and so help reduce dazzle from the sun. Top up your washer fluid and treat with a good quality, purpose-made additive to reduce the chance of freezing.Available from Milehams A1 Motor Store 133 Southdown Rd, Harpenden, Hertfordshire, AL5 1PU. Tel: 01582 766333.
