ANDY HAMILTON’S NIGHT TO REMEMBER Thurs 29th October, Eric Morecambe Centre, Harpenden Andy Hamilton, much loved and acclaimed comedian, writer, director, novelist, panellist and of course cartoon voice artist continues his tour of his brand-new night to remember this autumn. Exploring the wonders and the weaknesses of human memory, Andy looks at how laughter oils the wheels of the brain. (Please note that Andy is not a qualified neurologist. And the brain probably does not have wheels.) In an evening of classic comedy, Andy will do his best to recall the nights to remember from his own life, as a writer, performer, producer, director, failed quiz show contestant, choir boy, under-rated footballer and cartoon elephant dentist. He’ll examine moments that have shaped his life and collective experiences that have impacted us all in an entertaining, thoughtful, but above all very funny evening with a veteran master of comedy. Show starts at 7.30pm. Tickets available at the Box Office on 01582 767525 or by visiting www.the-emc.co.uk Venue: The Eric Morecambe Centre, Rothamsted Park, Harpenden, Herts, AL5 2FR. Early Black Friday 10% Discount on Failed Glazing! Starting 1st October 2026 Order NOW and beat the rush! Now is the perfect time to make your home more attractive and energy efficient. For over 20 years, Cloudy2Clear has been the UK’s leading specialist in domestic glass replacement. As a trusted family-run business, we are your one-stop shop for all glazing needs. Why Choose Cloudy2Clear? • We generate our own leads and create tailored quotes • We manufacture our own high quality glass in-house • All work is carried out by our own skilled team – no subcontractors • Every glass unit comes with a 25 year guarantee • Dedicated after-sales care for complete peace of mind • Don’t replace the entire window. Full frame replacements are expensive and create unnecessary mess and redecoration. We simply replace the failed glass unit – saving you money and minimising disruption.

Common Window Problems Double glazing seals often fail due to hot days and cool nights causing the glass to expand and contract. This allows air and moisture in, leading to condensation and foggy windows.

Act now before your glass unit rots or rusts your frames, eventually staining your window.

Join Over 346,000 Satisfied Customers • Affordable and ethical service • Significant cost savings compared to full window replacement • Faster installation with less upheaval • Improved energy efficiency and a warmer home. Manager Jacqui Harley says: “Our focus is on replacing just the glass, not the entire window. This reduces costs and disruption. As a true onestop shop, we handle everything from quoting to manufacturing premium glass with a 25-year guarantee.” Ready to upgrade your windows? Early Black Friday 2026 – 10% off starts 1st October. Order now and beat the rush! For a free quote, call 0800 61 21 118 or cloudy2clear.co.uk.

10% discount applies only to new quotes issued between 1/10/26 and 31/1/27. It cannot be applied to quotations issued before the offer start date.

The Perfect Halloween Pumpkin!

Things You’ll Need.

Newspaper, Pumpkin, Felt-tip Pen or pencil, Sharp Knife, Tea Light.

22

1.

Select a fresh pumpkin in a shape that pleases you. Some people prefer their pumpkins low and round, while others like them tall and oval-shaped but it’s up to you.

2.

Draw a circle or hexagon on the top of the pumpkin in preparation for making an opening large enough for your hand to reach through.

3.

Cut through the stem end of the pumpkin along your outline with a sharp knife. Use a back-and-forth slicing motion to cut through the thick, tough skin.

4.

Remove the stem end, which will act as a lid, making sure you scrape off any seeds or pulp on to the newspaper.

5.

Use a large spoon to scoop out the seeds and pulp from inside the pumpkin.

6.

After you have emptied out the insides, draw a pattern for the face with a felt-tip pen, or scribe the lines into the skin using a pencil. Make sure to make the eyes, nose and mouth large enough to get the full effect later.

7.

Follow your pattern as you cut all the way through the pumpkin.

8.

Push the cut-out features gently from the inside of the pumpkin and discard the pieces.

9.

Place a tea light inside the pumpkin to create an eerie glow.

10.

Stand back and admire your handy work!

THE TREE THAT’S SHOOTING UP LIKE A ROCKET!

The lovely copper beech that stands tall and proud outside the Methodist Church in Harpenden high street is now approaching its 20th year. It has shot up quickly from the slender tree planted back in 2007. Every year it grows a bit taller and a bit wider. Eventually it will reach the stature of the magnificent diseased one it replaced. You may not think there is any connection between this Fagus Sylvaticus Purpurea (to give its botanical name) and fireworks, but there is! As a community-minded local company, Fantastic Fireworks stepped in to fill the breach left by the old tree and sponsored a replacement. We are delighted to see it embellish Harpenden’s leafy high street.

24

When it comes to fireworks, which is why we’re here, for your Bonfire Night party there is only one shop in town. Admittedly, we’re not quite in town, being just beyond the city limits, still in Hertfordshire but with a Luton postcode. To add to the confusion, we pay our rates to Dacorum, somewhat bizarrely being in the parish of Flamstead! None of this is of any relevance except for you to know where to find us – in Half Moon Lane, Pepperstock, LU1 4LL, just half a mile off the A1081 between Harpenden and Luton. Watch out for the big TURN LEFT sign to Pepperstock. We’ve been on this site for 35 years, which added to the 5 years we spent in the Redbourn area means we are celebrating 40 years in fireworks. It has been an amazing journey, starting out with the Redbourn and St Albans displays back in the 1980s, which we are still doing, and progressing today to being one of the leading names in UK fireworks. We also cater for the domestic market. You’re welcome to visit our fireworks shop in Pepperstock where you will find an Aladdin’s cave of firework whizzardry! With Bonfire Night only weeks away, we look forward to seeing you!

Mulled Wine

There are hundreds of recipes for mulled wine (or gluhwein) and everyone has their own secret ingredient. Maybe a little dash of cognac, or another spice added. The important thing is to get the amount of sugar right. Too much sugar makes it too sickly and cloying, too little and the tartness loses much of the comfort factor that makes mulled wine so warming and festive. So the golden rule is to add less sugar than you think you’ll need, then taste the wine once it is warmed through and add more sugar just until it tastes right for you. Each wine will be different and individual tastes vary, so bask in the heady warmth of wine and spices and stand over your mulled wine tasting little sips until it is just right! Choosing a wine to mull is another important consideration. You don’t want to use total plonk, but it is a waste to use a well-aged bottle of prize wine. Ideally you should use a red wine that is not too tannic, so avoid wines aged in oak, but it should have enough flavour and body to be drinkable on its own. A medium bodied claret, chianti or merlot works well. Ingredients – Serves 10

2 bottles of medium-bodied red wine 1 cup sugar and more to taste 6 cinnamon sticks 15 cloves grated nutmeg 2 oranges

The spicy wafting aroma of mulled wine on a chilly winter’s evening gives a festive air to even the gloomiest of weather. The warming spices of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg and tangy zest of orange brighten up a plain red wine and put you in the mood for celebrating Christmas. 58

Push the cloves into the skin of the oranges then cut the oranges in half. Pour the wine into a large stainless steel or enamel saucepan and warm over a medium heat. Add the sugar, spices and clove studded oranges. Keep an eye on the wine and turn the heat to very low as soon as it gets close to simmering. You don’t want it to boil or it will lose its alcohol content! Taste for sugar and add more until it tastes right for you. Keep it steaming over a low heat for an hour or so to allow the spices to infuse. Ladle it into glasses or mugs and breathe in the spicy aroma. Other things you can add to mulled wine: Star anise, bay leaves, mace, ginger, cardamom, lemon, lime and brandy to name a few.

WINTER WONDERLAND WEBSITES Track Santa www.noradsanta.org

On Dec. 24, 1955, a call was made to the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Operations Centre in Colorado Springs, Colo. However, this call was not from the president or a general. It was from a girl in Colorado Springs who was following the directions in an advertisement printed in the local paper – she wanted to know the whereabouts of Santa Claus. The ad said “Hey, Kiddies! Call me direct and be sure and dial the correct number.” However, the number was printed incorrectly in the advertisement and rang into the CONAD operations centre. On duty that night was Colonel Harry Shoup, who has come to be known as the “Santa Colonel.” Colonel Shoup received numerous calls that night and rather than hanging up, he had his operators find the location of Santa Claus and reported it to every child who phoned in that night. Thus began a tradition carried on by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) when it was formed in 1958. Today, through satellite systems, high-powered radars and jet fighters, NORAD tracks Santa Claus as he makes his Yuletide journey around the world.

Santa’s Christmas video messages www.portablenorthpole.com Santa uses a device called the Portable North Pole console, called the PNP for short, to send personalized video messages to children and adults around the world. In a few easy steps, anyone can help Santa gather the information needed to prepare a unique, tailor-made video message that will enchant even the biggest doubters & delight his biggest fan.

CREATE YOUR OWN FATHER CHRISTMAS MASK What you will need: 1 x Paper plate 1 x Sheet of Red Card 1 x Wooden lollypop stick or Pencil Elastic or ribbon Paint (Pink and Red) Crayons or coloured pencils Cotton wool or cotton balls Glue Sellotape Scissors Pencil

What You Do: You are going to use the back of the plate as the front of the mask, as the dip of the plate fits more comfortably around the face. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Paint the back of the plate in a pink colour and let it dry. In the meantime make a triangular “hat” out of red card. When the paint is dry, draw and cut out eye holes in the plate the same distance as your eyes are apart so you can see through the holes when you hold it up to your face. Draw a Father Christmas face onto the plate, but without his beard. Try out some different versions of faces on a piece of scratch paper. Make sure the face is centred & that there is space on top to stick the hat. Paint or draw on a nose, mouth, and some rosy cheeks onto the plate. Once dry, stick on cotton wool for Father Christmas’s hair and beard. Glue the hat on top of the plate, if it doesn’t stick, you can use some clear tape at the sides to secure it. Add a white cotton ball or cotton wool on top of the hat. Finish off the mask either by gluing the lollypop stick or a pencil, vertically to the bottom of the mask.

These should hang down below the mask and will make a handle with which the mask can be held in front of the face.Alternatively fix two same size ribbon’s either side of the mask, so they can be tied them behind your head to secure mask. 64

HOME MADE CHRISTMAS CRACKERS

Christmas crackers are a British tradition dating back to Victorian times when in the early 1850s, London confectioner Tom Smith started adding a motto to his sugared almond bon-bons which he sold wrapped in a twisted paper package.

As many of his bon-bons were bought by men to give to women, many of the mottos were simple love poems. He was inspired to add the “bang” when he heard the crackle of a log he had just put on the fire. He decided to make a log shaped package that would produce a surprise bang and inside would be an almond and a motto. Soon the sugared almond was replaced with a small gift. Make your own Home made crackers in 6 easy steps 1: Gather your material you will need Toilet paper roll tubes Thin Wrapping Paper Ribbon, string or twine Small Gifts or Sweets Some other popular items to put in yours crackers are folded paper hats & jokes. See page 18 for a selection of jokes to use. 2 Fold the wrapping paper. Fold a standard piece of wrapping paper in half with the folded end closest to you. Place a toilet paper roll tube at that same end in the bottom centre of the wrapping paper. 3 Stuff your cracker. I think it’s easiest to stuff your cracker at this point. You can also stuff it after you have rolled up the wrapping paper roll tube and have tied one side. If you have small pieces (like coins or candy), you can also stuff a few pieces of tissue paper into the ends of the tube to keep everything from flying out when the crackers are opened. 4 Roll up your cracker. Starting with the folded end closest to you, roll wrapping paper around the tube and continue rolling tube until you reach the end of the wrapping paper. You can add a piece of tape to secure the wrapping paper if you’d like, but it’s not necessary since you’ll be tying up the ends anyway. 70

Mains

ONE-PAN PUMPKIN, SAGE & MEATBALL PASTA

Ingredients: • 600g pumpkin or squash cut into chunks • 6 whole garlic cloves • 2 tbsp olive oil plus extra for drizzling • 6 sausages pinch of chilli flakes + extra to serve • 10 sage leaves • 400g rigatoni • 250g mascarpone • 50g parmesan grated, plus extra to serve • small bunch of parsley chopped

Method: STEP 1

Heat the oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Toss the pumpkin and garlic cloves together in a large roasting tin and drizzle over 1 tbsp of the olive oil. Season well and mix to coat. Roast for 20 mins.

STEP 2

Squeeze the meat from sausages out of their skins into a bowl. Divide into small, equalsized pieces, then roll each piece into a meatball. Shake the roasting tin, then dot the meatballs all over the top and sprinkle over the chilli flakes. Cook for 25 mins more, or until the pumpkin and garlic have softened and the meatballs are browned. Use the remaining olive oil to rub each sage leaf all over, then scatter into the tin. Roast for another 5 mins.

STEP 3

Meanwhile, cook the pasta in a large pan of boiling salted water following pack instructions, or until al dente. Drain, reserving the cooking water.

STEP 4

Remove the tin from the oven. Squeeze the garlic from its skins into the tin, then mash with a fork. Mash about a quarter of the pumpkin, too.

STEP 5

Tip the mascarpone into the tin along with half the parmesan and a mugful of the reserved pasta water. Toss everything together, adding more of the pasta water, if needed, until you have a silky sauce. Stir through the parsley and serve topped with the remaining parmesan and another pinch of chilli flakes.

To bleed a radiator, first switch off your central heating and let the system cool slightly. You’ll need a radiator key (or a flat-head screwdriver for modern valves) and a cloth to catch drips. Insert the key into the bleed valve, usually found at the top corner. Turn it slowly anti-clockwise until you hear a hiss of escaping air. Once water begins to flow steadily, tighten the valve again.

Keeping your heating system running efficiently is more important than ever in the UK in 2025, with energy costs and environmental concerns at the forefront. One simple DIY task that makes a big difference is bleeding your radiators. Radiators can develop air pockets over time. Instead of filling with hot water, the trapped air rises to the top, leaving the radiator only partly warm. This means your boiler works harder, rooms heat unevenly, and your bills creep up. Bleeding radiators restores proper circulation, saves energy, and ensures consistent warmth.

Work through your radiators one by one, starting with those downstairs and moving up. When finished, check your boiler’s pressure gauge— releasing air can lower system pressure, so you may need to top it up. Regularly bleeding radiators—ideally once a year before winter—keeps your heating system efficient, lowers energy use, and ensures every room feels properly heated. It’s a quick, low-cost DIY job that pays off immediately in comfort and savings.

BLEEDING RADIATORS

Similarly, installing reflective foil panels behind radiators redirects heat back into the room rather than letting it vanish through external walls.

AUTUMN ENERGY SAVING TIPS

As autumn chills the UK air, households face a familiar dilemma: how to keep warm without sending energy bills skyrocketing. With central heating systems firing up across the country, autumn is the critical time to winterproof your property and lock in efficiency before the really cold weather sets in. The most cost-effective way is tackling this is draught-proofing windows and doors with inexpensive foam strips or heavy curtains which stops warmth escaping.

98

Next, optimise your heating habits. Bleeding radiators ensures hot water flows efficiently without cold spots, while turning down the boiler flow temperature can save up to 8% on gas consumption. Lowering your main thermostat by just one degree— ideally to 18°C—can shave a further 10% off annual bills without sacrificing comfort. Finally, manage moisture to save power. Damp air takes significantly more energy to heat than dry air. Keeping trickle vents open and utilizing a dehumidifier actually helps your home warm up faster, creating a dry, energy-efficient sanctuary for the colder months ahead. For further information:

HELP MAKE OUR COMMUNITY SAFER Neighbourhood Watch has been part of community life for many years, helping neighbours look out for one another and serving as an important link between residents and the Police. But communities change. People move, some local schemes become inactive, and in some streets there is no longer a coordinator. We are therefore refreshing Neighbourhood Watch across Harpenden, Wheathampstead, Redbourn and Sandridge, and we would like more residents to get involved. Our message is simple: JOIN • CONNECT • LEARN JOIN your local Neighbourhood Watch scheme. Membership is free and is about being better informed, knowing your neighbours and helping create safer, more connected communities. We are also seeking volunteers to become coordinators where schemes have become dormant. CONNECT with Hertfordshire Constabulary via Herts Connected, the new Police messaging and alert system. By signing up, residents can receive relevant local crime, policing and community-safety information directly.

PROTECT YOUR PIPES! Autumn is the perfect time to insulate your pipes before freezing winter temperatures arrive. As the thermometer drops, standing water in exposed pipework can freeze, expand, and split the metal or plastic, leading to bursts and expensive water damage. Focus your efforts on unheated areas of the home, such as lofts, garages, basements, and any outdoor garden taps. The most effective and budget-friendly solution is foam pipe lagging. This flexible foam tube features a slit along its length, allowing you to slip it effortlessly over the pipework. For a successful DIY installation, measure the outside diameter of your pipes and the total length needed before buying materials at a merchant like B&Q or Screwfix. Cut the foam to size using a sharp knife, wrap it tightly around the copper or plastic pipes and seal the joints securely with duct tape or cable ties, to prevent gaps. Pay close attention to bends and T-junctions, ensuring no bare pipe is left exposed to the cold air. Spending an autumn afternoon lagging your pipes protects your property, preserves water pressure, and cuts energy bills by stopping heat loss, from your hot water system. If it’s not something you can do, Try calling JW Plumbing – Advert on page 97 or Harpenden Plumbing & Heating – advert below.

COMBAT THE AUTUMN CONDENSATION! As autumn chills the UK air, a familiar, unwelcome guest returns to British homes: condensation. When central heating kicks in against dropping outdoor temperatures, everyday activities like boiling the kettle or drying laundry transform into a recipe for black mould. Dealing with this seasonal dampness requires a shift from short-term wiping to a strategic trifecta of heating, insulation, and ventilation. First, tackle moisture at its source. Covering pans while cooking, venting tumble dryers outside, and banning wet clothes from radiators will drastically cut indoor humidity. When moisture is inevitable, contain it by keeping bathroom and kitchen doors firmly shut. Second, embrace managed airflow. It is tempting to seal homes tight to save heat, but trapping stale air guarantees damp walls. Keep trickle vents open permanently, run extractor fans for twenty minutes after showering, and purge the house daily by opening windows wide for just ten minutes. Finally, rethink your heating. High bursts of heat followed by freezing periods cause rapid condensation cycles. Instead, maintain a steady, low ambient temperature of 15–18°C. This keeps the structural fabric of your home warm, preventing water vapour from settling. Paired with a compressor dehumidifier, you can easily keep humidity below 60% and ensure a dry, healthy winter ahead. For more tips and information visit: www.energysavingtrust.org.uk

Autumn jobs include:

AUTUMN GARDEN JOBS

Autumn is a beautiful time of year with all the stunning tree colours and leaves on the ground. On breezy days it may see pointless raking up leaves, but if you do you can put them on the compost heap and look forward to rich leaf mulch next year. Leaf mould provides nutrients for the soil, helps reduce weeds and allows the soil to retain more moisture. If you don’t already have a compost heap or bin then October is a great time to start one, with all those leaves and cuttings to dispose of.

1. Move tender plants, including aquatic ones, into a greenhouse or conservatory 2. Cut back perennials that have died down 3. Divide herbaceous perennials 4. Divide established rhubarb crowns to create new plants 5. Plant out spring cabbages 6. Harvest apples, pears, grapes and nuts 7. Prune climbing roses 8. Finish collecting seeds from the garden to sow next year 9. Last chance to mow lawns & trim hedges in mild areas 10. Renovate old lawns or create new grass areas by laying turf For more gardening tips throughout the year visit

Gardens

Remember to be on the lookout for hedgehogs in any leaf piles, untidy areas or bonfires.

DISCOVER THE WOODS IN AUTUMN A visit to the woods during this spectacular season is always a treat. Grab your woolly scarf, pull on your wellies and venture out into the crisp autumn air. Listen to the crunch of leaves beneath your feet and get swept away in all that this season has to offer.

Take a walk Woodland walks are a great way to get out and about during the autumn. Stroll along wooded paths, smell the ripening fruits and admire the beauty of the leaves as they change colour.

Go foraging Autumn is one of the best times to head out foraging. The woods are filled with a feast of delights to forage, from hazelnuts to blackberries, sweet chestnuts to crab apples.

Search for fairytale fungi Weird and wonderful fungi is very much part of the woodland furniture at this time of year. Look out for the bright red caps of fly agaric, the aptly-named dead man’s fingers and the glow-in-the-dark honey fungus. Just remember lots of them will be poisonous, so look but don’t touch.

Watch for wildlife This time of year is perfect for observing wildlife. Watch the arrival of migrant birds, see the spectacle of deer rutting, admire the intricate spider webs as they appear & look out for foraging squirrels in search of nuts.

Record your findings Recording your seasonal sightings at www.naturescalendar.woodlandtrust.org.uk will help scientists observe how the changing climate is affecting the UK’s wildlife.

Driving conditions in autumn can become more challenging than other months due to heavy rainfall causing floods on the roads… to leaves piling up under trees causing cars to slip and slide. That’s why it pays to be prepared. 1. Preparing inside the car Now’s the time to clean the inside of your car ensuring the windscreen is clean. Low sun in the autumn months are a potentially dangerous, as they bring out the worst in a dirty windscreen. 2. Preparing around the car Be sure to check all the car’s bulbs are working and don’t forget the reversing light. 3. Preparing the tyres Your tyres are vital to staying safe on the road. To ensure they perform as well as possible, the tread depth should be regularly inspected. If the tread drops below 3mm, you should consider replacing them. 4. Preparing under the bonnet Grab your handbook, lift the bonnet (when the engine is cold) and roll up your sleeves: it’s time to check your car’s vital signs. Ensure the screen wash is full up, so it’s ready to use to clean your windscreen during autumn weather.

The last check is under the bonnet for engine oil. Do this at least 10 minutes after the engine is switched off, to allow oil to return to the sump. Grab two paper towels, one to grip and remove the dipstick and the other to wipe the end of the dipstick clean. The oil should be between the minimum & maximum marks.
