HARPENDEN BANKING HUB GET PERMANENT HIGH STREET HOME!

Harpenden’s Banking Hub has secured its permanent move to the High Street ensuring accessible banking services for customers of high street banks in the town. The Banking Hub, which has been operating at the Town Hall on an interim basis has welcomed over 7000 customer visits since its opening in December last year, highlighting the importance of a permanent banking facility in Harpenden.

Cash Access UK confirmed that the lease for the permanent Banking Hub in Harpenden has now been completed for 35, High Street, Harpenden, AL5 2RU with the expected opening date of February 2026. The new, centrally located premises will continue to provide professional, face to face counter services for customers of the major high street banks.

The Town Council (HTC) led the campaign to establish a Banking Hub for close to three years, following the closure of Harpenden’s Banks. Its work included public engagement conducted in 2023 which highlighted that the lack of banks in the town has significantly impacted local people and businesses. HTC’s commitment to delivering a Banking Hub led to its offering space at the Town Hall as an interim solution until permanent premises were found.

Residents, business, voluntary and community organisations are urged to use the Banking Hub in the same way as their own bank. Cash withdrawals, opening an account, paying in cheques, financial advice and all other services are available Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.

THE 1971 COOKING UP AN “AWARD-WINNING” STORM!

The 1971 in Harpenden has won AGAIN, at this year’s Asian Curry Awards – dubbed the “Curry Oscars”.

The restaurant which is at 36 Station Rd, Harpenden, was awarded the honour of best Bangladeshi restaurant in the South East of England under the “Casual Dining Restaurant of the Year” category.

The event of 46 awards was held at the Grosvenor House in London’s Mayfair, with the evening hosted by BBC news anchor Samantha Simmonds, with awards covering fine dining, casual dining, street food, take away and many more, and covered all Asian and Oriental cuisines.

Winners were chosen from all around the UK by the Asian Catering Federation’s panel of judges from a list of finalists compiled by voted from the public.

The restaurant which is known for combining Indian and Bangladeshi dishes, gets its name from a significant year in the history of Bangladesh when the Bangladeshi Liberation War, better known as the ‘Bangladeshi war of Independence Day’ took place. That’s when Bangladesh became its own independent country.

Has Your Double Glazing Steamed Up?

As the foremost domestic glass replacement company in the UK for more than 18 years, Cloudy2Clear Windows are the leading name in the industry. There is now no need for you to risk your windows by using the dreaded double glazing cowboy down the street. You can join over 340,000 happy customers and replace your glass ethically and affordably. If you have a failed glass unit it may not provide you with the protection you need, or be as energy-efficient as it once was. Why not take a minute to check your home to see if any double glazing has failed? Taking action now can prevent future financial problems.

When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear Stephen Moon it became evident that the value of saving their customers money has been held dear for

a number of years. In addition since starting the business in 2005, Cloudy2Clear have committed to supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public both time and money.

The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “By doing this we make the customer considerable savings and there is much less upheaval in the family home. Also, whether communities find themselves in a financial crisis or not, saving money when you don’t need to waste it is always the sensible option, and our service does just that”.

THE HUMAN REGENERATOR

Living with chronic inflammation can make everyday life feel harder than it should. The stiffness when you wake up, the background aches that build through the day, the tiredness that follows you around, over time, it wears on both the body and the mind. And during winter, when everything feels a little colder and a little heavier, these sensations often become more noticeable.

At our Harpenden centre, the Human Regenerator offers a gentle, restorative environment designed to help your system settle. It’s completely non-invasive, open, and simple. You lie down on a comfortable bed, relax, and allow your body to shift out of its usual patterns of tension and strain.

For others, the changes unfold more gently: clearer mornings, steadier mood, improved comfort, or simply feeling more resilient day to day. Everybody responds differently and that’s completely normal.

CLIENT EXPERIENCES:

“After a couple of sessions I could feel the benefit not only with my knee but my whole wellbeing.”

“The bed left me feeling lighter, recharged, and full of positive energy.”

“Living with the constant pain was really affecting me and this has made such a difference.”

“I would definitely recommend this experience to my clients - it’s amazing.”

— Suzy White, Physiotherapist & Myofascial Release Therapist

If you’re curious, we run regular open days in Harpenden, where you can see the Human Regenerator, ask questions, and enjoy a free mini trial session to experience what it feels like for yourself.

Clients often describe entering a meditative state, a feeling of calm, clarity and real relaxation. Many say they “switch off” more deeply than they have in a long time and are surprised by how quickly the time passes. A number of clients also report that the first improvement they notice is better sleep, which naturally helps everything else feel more manageable.

As sessions continue, the changes vary from person to person. For some, the shift is quick and quite pronounced, easier movement, softer tension, more stable energy.

To book a full session or learn more, visit www.regenifyhealth.co.uk email: regenifyhealth@gmail.com or follow @regenifyhealth on Instagram

Introductory offers are available, and we also offer gift vouchers, an exceptional and luxurious way to treat someone to deep rest, renewal, and a moment of pure restoration. A rare gift of wellbeing they’ll genuinely remember.

WERE YOU LIVING IN HARPENDEN DURING THE 1960S?

The Harpenden Local History Society is asking residents for memories of daily life in the 1960s for a new project, seeking stories about schools, shops like the Broadway Hall Market or Regent cinema, local events, and social changes, which can be submitted via email to archivist@ harpenden-history.org.uk or at the Harpenden Museum, with rewards for the best stories and a deadline of January 31, 2026.

They aim to capture personal experiences of the era, from childhood games to life in houses with or without central heating, to build a rich archive of Harpenden’s past for future generations.

To Share Your Memories either:

Email: Send your written memories to archivist@harpenden-history.org.uk

In Person: Leave your stories at the Harpenden Museum in Rothamsted Park.

Oral Recording: You can also request an oral recording session to share your memories

Harpenden History Society previously ran a competition in the 1970s to gain experiences and memories of local life before the outbreak of the First World War and received many entries and the current exhibition in the museum uses those to show what everyday life in Edwardian Harpenden was like. For more details on this exhibition, please see page 28.

Rothamsted

Park Harpenden

Rothamsted Park is a 56-acre (230,000 m2) public park in Harpenden, Hertfordshire.

The park was formerly part of the Manor of Rothamsted, later Rothamsted estate, owned by Sir John Lawes. He initiated agricultural experiments in 1843, which led to the founding of the nearby Rothamsted Experimental Station. He also created the formal entrance from Leyton Road to what is now the Park and planted the avenue of Lime trees.

In 1931, the family decided to sell the estate, and after a successful public appeal, the Experimental Station was able to finance its purchase of the estate in 1934. In 1938 the Harpenden Urban District Council purchased the land now known as Rothamsted park from the Experimental Station, in order to provide playing fields and to preserve an important open space. Rothamsted Park is also home to Harpenden Town FC.

The Park’s main entrance gates were removed for salvage during the Second World War, and after the war the restoration of the entrance was paid for by the Friends Provident Insurance Company.

In 1975 the nearby sports hall was opened by the Mayor of St Albans City and District, as one of the first major projects of the newly formed St Albans District Council.

Address: Leyton Rd, Harpenden AL5 2HU. Opening hours: Open 24 hours a day

LYDEKKER PARK AN OASIS IN CENTRE OF HARPENDEN

This was to be completed by the developers of the newly created housing estate surrounding the park and donated in a finished state to the Council. As St Albans District Council was the successor Council to the former Harpenden Urban District Council, it became the beneficiary of this gifted land.

The Harpenden Town Council of that time made strenuous efforts to have the public open space and car park retained in the ownership of Harpenden Town Council.

Following discussions with the District Council, an agreement was reached in 1998 that Harpenden Town Council would lease Lydekker Park and the new 93 space fee paying car park from St Albans District Council at a peppercorn rent.

In 2012 after much campaigning Lydekker Park and car park were devolved back from the District Council into the ownership of Harpenden Town Council.

The park is sited on land that was part of the grounds of Harpenden Lodge, which was built in 1803 and bought by the Lydekkers, one of Harpenden’s oldest families, in 1857. The property remained in the Lydekker family until 1987.

The last surviving member of the Harpenden branch of the Lydekker family, Miss Hilda Lydekker, lived in Harpenden Lodge until 1979, when she left at the age of 93 to move into a nursing home. Her uncle, Captain Arthur Lydekker, was for six years the Chairman of Harpenden Urban District Council, from its inception in 1898.

In 1937, Hilda Lydekker had entered into an agreement with the former Harpenden Urban District Council that the 11 acres of land attached to Harpenden Lodge should become private open space. It was her intention that part of it be preserved as a memorial to her loved ones lost in the 1914 – 1918 War. With the demise of the Urban District Council in 1974, this agreement passed to the newly created St Albans District Council. Following the death of Miss Lydekker in 1987, shortly before her 101st birthday, St Albans District Council entered into an agreement with the executors of the Will to retain a total of three acres as public open space with a car park.

The Council has now created a 5-year management plan for the park which can be viewed here. Two new interpretation boards were installed in the park in August 2017 and feature a background to the history of the park, and information about the wildlife that inhabit the ponds. In July 2017, Lydekker Park was awarded its very first Green Flag Award, joining Harpenden Common as one of the UK’s very best open spaces.

Lydekker Park is situated just off Sun Lane, Harpenden.

Batford Springs Nature Reserve

Batford Springs is a 3.5 hectare Local Nature Reserve in Harpenden.. It is owned and managed by Harpenden Town Council. The majority of the conservation and maintenance work on the site is undertaken by Batford Springs Volunteers with assistance from the Council and other contractors. Such works are detailed in a 5-year management plan put together by the Volunteers with continuing input from a number of specialist advisors including the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust. In 1995, the area was accredited as a Reserve by Natural England. Its principal features are the fresh springs that serve a small network of chalk lined streams and ponds. The River Lea with its riverside walks flows through the site and there is open grassland and a small wooded area to explore.

Locally the River Lea from its source in Luton through Harpenden down to Wheathampstead has been made a focus for the Upper Lea Catchment Management Plan.

In January 2015 the Batford Springs Local Nature Reserve was extended with the purchase of land in Marquis Lane. The land runs from the corner of Marquis Lane, eastwards to the bottom of Piggotshill Lane.A plan for to incorporate this area into the nature reserve is being drawn up in conjunction with the Batford Springs Volunteers and the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust. A fully accessible path across the new area was installed in November 2016.

Heartwood Forest

It’s so big that it’s now the largest continuous new native forest in England; a place where everyone can find space, peace, wildlife and miles of beautiful woodland to explore. Heartwood Forest is owned and managed by the Woodland Trust along with more than 1,000 sites all over the UK and supported by more than 250,000 members. Find out more about the Woodland Trust by visiting www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/about-us/what-we-do/ New and ancient woodland

Nomansland Common

Nomansland common is approximately 130 acres (52.5 ha) of common land of which Wheathampstead parish council owns 35 acres (95 ha) the remainder being owned by the Althorp Estate and located in Sandridge parish. Nomansland is reputed to have got its name because of the bitter rivalry and frequent disputes between the monasteries of St Albans and Westminster. Both claimed the land was within their respective parishes of Sandridge and Wheathampstead. It is believed that this area was used for grazing as early as 4000BC.

FLAT PACK MIKE

During the 1700s Nomansland was notorious for highway robberies, Dick Turpin and Tom King used to meet there regularly on their way to other counties. The most infamous robber in these parts was Lady Ferrers of Markyate, dubbed the Wicked Lady. During this time a gibbet (gallows ) was erected at the top of the hill towards St Albans, as a warning for thieves.

Horse races were held here regularly between 1829 and 1837. In 1829 King George VI won the St Albans cup and it is thought the first proper steeplechase in England was held here in 1830.

There used to be a river running parallel to the main road from Wheathampstead to St Albans but this has now gone underground and runs where the outfield of the cricket pitch dips and turns under the cricket pavilion.

In 1429 a Puddingstone was placed to mark the boundary between Sandridge and Wheathampstead. This stone can be seen on the outfield of the cricket pitch close to the road.

For more information on Nomansland, its history and Puddingstone see the virtual museum on the Wheathampstead Heritage web site. www. wheathampsteadheritage.org.uk

Dessert

BREAD AND BUTTER PUDDING

Prep Time: Under 30 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes to an 1 hour

Makes: 6-8 servings

Ingredients:

• 75g/3oz butter, softened, plus extra for greasing

2 lemons, grated zest only

200g/7oz sultanas

8 slices medium-sliced white bread

3 free-range eggs

350ml/12 fl oz full-fat milk

200ml/half pint pouring double cream

75g/3oz demerara sugar

Generously butter a 23–25cm/9–10in (3 pint) shallow ovenproof dish. Ideally the dish should be large enough to arrange the bread in two layers.

Mix the lemon zest with the sultanas in a bowl.

Butter all the slices of bread on one side. Cut each buttered slice into four squares. Whisk the eggs in a bowl, then stir in the milk and cream.

Sprinkle the base of the dish with some of the sultanas. Arrange half the bread squares across the base, buttered-side down. Sprinkle most of the remaining sultanas over the bread, then top with half the sugar. Arrange the remaining bread, buttered side up, over the sultanas and sugar.

Pour the milk mixture over the bread, then sprinkle the remaining sugar on top. Set aside for 1 hour, or longer if time allows, so the milk mixture soaks into the bread.

Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Sprinkle the remaining sultanas over the top of the pudding, then push them down into the bread.

Place near the top of the preheated oven and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until set, risen and golden.

Serve at once with pouring cream. It is at its best straight from the oven.

In the United Kingdom, maintaining functional smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms is a critical component of household safety.

Both homeowners and tenants share responsibility for ensuring these life-saving devices are tested regularly.

The overarching guidance from fire services across the UK is straightforward: test every alarm at least once a month.

The Simple Monthly Test

Testing an alarm is a quick and simple process:

1.Press and Hold: Press the ‘Test’ button firmly with a finger or the end of a broom handle (if the unit is ceiling-mounted).

2.Listen for the Sound: A loud, piercing alarm should sound immediately. This confirms that the battery, the sensor connection, and the alarm mechanism are all working correctly.

3.Check All Alarms: If you have multiple alarms in a linked system, all should sound simultaneously.

4.No Sound? If the alarm fails to sound, you must immediately troubleshoot the issue. For units with replaceable batteries, try replacing them with new ones. If the issue persists, the unit requires professional replacement.

The best way to remember this monthly check is to associate it with a recurring event, such as paying a utility bill or the first day of the month.

Maintenance Beyond the Button Press

Regular testing is only part of a robust safety regimen. Three other maintenance tasks are essential:

•Battery Replacement: For alarms that use replaceable batteries, these should be changed annually. A useful mnemonic is “Change your clocks, change your batteries” when the clocks go forward or back for British Summer Time, although the yearly cycle is the key factor. Modern “sealed for life” alarms are designed to last a decade without a battery change.

•Cleaning: Dust and debris can clog the sensor chambers, leading to nuisance alarms or, worse, preventing the alarm from detecting a genuine threat. Gently vacuum the vents around the alarm casing every three months to keep them clear.

•Replacement of the Unit: Alarms do not last indefinitely. Both smoke and CO alarms have a maximum lifespan of 10 years from the date of manufacture. The expiry date is always printed somewhere on the unit. Expiry dates must be adhered to; an old alarm is an unreliable alarm.

UK Rentals

In rented accommodation in England and Wales, specific laws dictate the testing procedure. The landlord is legally obligated to ensure all required alarms (a minimum of one smoke alarm on every storey and a CO alarm in rooms with a fixed combustion appliance) are installed and fully operational on the day a new tenancy begins.

Once the tenant moves in, the responsibility shifts: the tenant is then responsible for conducting the regular monthly testing and immediately reporting any defects or failures to the landlord in writing. The landlord must then arrange for the repair or replacement as soon as reasonably practicable.

By following these simple steps, you ensure your household remains protected in 2026 and beyond.

BLEEDING RADIATORS

Keeping your heating system running efficiently is more important than ever in the UK in 2025, with energy costs and environmental concerns at the forefront. One simple DIY task that makes a big difference is bleeding your radiators.

Radiators can develop air pockets over time. Instead of filling with hot water, the trapped air rises to the top, leaving the radiator only partly warm. This means your boiler works harder, rooms heat unevenly, and your bills creep up. Bleeding radiators restores proper circulation, saves energy, and ensures consistent warmth.

To bleed a radiator, first switch off your central heating and let the system cool slightly. You’ll need a radiator key (or a flat-head screwdriver for modern valves) and a cloth to catch drips. Insert the key into the bleed valve, usually found at the top corner. Turn it slowly anti-clockwise until you hear a hiss of escaping air. Once water begins to flow steadily, tighten the valve again.

Work through your radiators one by one, starting with those downstairs and moving up. When finished, check your boiler’s pressure gauge— releasing air can lower system pressure, so you may need to top it up.

Regularly bleeding radiators—ideally once a year before winter—keeps your heating system efficient, lowers energy use, and ensures every room feels properly heated. It’s a quick, low-cost DIY job that pays off immediately in comfort and savings.

DON’T WASH BUT SCRAPE!

Hands up who cleans their dirty pans in the sink? That’ll be most of us then. But turns out washing our frying pans in this way could be harming the environment.

According to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), who have issued new guidance on how people should be cleaning pans in order to save water. Instead of just rinsing under the tap, they are advising you wait until oil in your pan has cooled before scraping the excess off to reuse or bin. They then suggest we wipe leftover grease out of the pan with kitchen roll before finally washing. It is estimated the UK water industry spends £100m each year on clearing blockages caused by the wrong things being put down sinks & toilets.

The department released the guidance as part of its new Love Water campaign, which aims to reduce the amount of oil we pour into our waterways as a nation.

If washed off with water, the oil and fat can harden in pipes, causing fatbergs to formwhich is expensive to remove.

Just one litre of oil poured down the sink can pollute one million litres of water, DEFRA said.

The Food Standards Agency said there is no reason not to follow the advice regarding cleaning frying pans, “As long as utensils are washed appropriately after scraping out the oil, there is no health and safety issue.”

The advice comes as campaigner’s fear England could run short on water in the next 25 years, with Environment Agency chief executive Sir James Bevan describing it as a “jaws of death” situation.
