WINTER WONDERLAND WEBSITES Track Santa www.noradsanta.org

On Dec. 24, 1955, a call was made to the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Operations Centre in Colorado Springs, Colo. However, this call was not from the president or a general. It was from a girl in Colorado Springs who was following the directions in an advertisement printed in the local paper – she wanted to know the whereabouts of Santa Claus. The ad said “Hey, Kiddies! Call me direct and be sure and dial the correct number.” However, the number was printed incorrectly in the advertisement and rang into the CONAD operations centre. On duty that night was Colonel Harry Shoup, who has come to be known as the “Santa Colonel.” Colonel Shoup received numerous calls that night and rather than hanging up, he had his operators find the location of Santa Claus and reported it to every child who phoned in that night. Thus began a tradition carried on by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) when it was formed in 1958. Today, through satellite systems, high-powered radars and jet fighters, NORAD tracks Santa Claus as he makes his Yuletide journey around the world.

Santa’s Christmas video messages www.portablenorthpole.com Santa uses a device called the Portable North Pole console, called the PNP for short, to send personalized video messages to children and adults around the world. Since its launch in 2008, almost 100 million video messages from the PNP console have been viewed worldwide by children and the young-at-heart. In a few easy steps, anyone can help Santa gather the information needed to prepare a unique, tailor-made video message that will enchant even the biggest doubters & delight his biggest fan.

Christmas letters to Santa www.royalmail.com/letters-to-santa Christmas is a very exciting but busy time for Santa: the elves are making toys, the reindeer are practising their sleigh runs, and Santa Claus is busy preparing his list of who’s been good this year. He needs to let the elves know what to make so to help him out and let him know what you would like by 6th December. Send your letter to him today by visiting the website above

CREATE YOUR OWN FATHER CHRISTMAS MASK What you will need: 1 x Paper plate 1 x Sheet of Red Card 1 x Wooden lollypop stick or Pencil Elastic or ribbon Paint (Pink and Red) Crayons or coloured pencils Cotton wool or cotton balls Glue Sellotape Scissors Pencil

What You Do: You are going to use the back of the plate as the front of the mask, as the dip of the plate fits more comfortably around the face. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Paint the back of the plate in a pink colour and let it dry. In the meantime make a triangular “hat” out of red card. When the paint is dry, draw and cut out eye holes in the plate the same distance as your eyes are apart so you can see through the holes when you hold it up to your face. Draw a Father Christmas face onto the plate, but without his beard. Try out some different versions of faces on a piece of scratch paper. Make sure the face is centred & that there is space on top to stick the hat. Paint or draw on a nose, mouth, and some rosy cheeks onto the plate. Once dry, stick on cotton wool for Father Christmas’s hair and beard. Glue the hat on top of the plate, if it doesn’t stick, you can use some clear tape at the sides to secure it. Add a white cotton ball or cotton wool on top of the hat. Finish off the mask either by gluing the lollypop stick or a pencil, vertically to the bottom of the mask.

These should hang down below the mask and will make a handle with which the mask can be held in front of the face.Alternatively fix two same size ribbon’s either side of the mask, so they can be tied them behind your head to secure mask. 14

HOME MADE CHRISTMAS CRACKERS

Christmas crackers are a British tradition dating back to Victorian times when in the early 1850s, London confectioner Tom Smith started adding a motto to his sugared almond bon-bons which he sold wrapped in a twisted paper package.

As many of his bon-bons were bought by men to give to women, many of the mottos were simple love poems. He was inspired to add the “bang” when he heard the crackle of a log he had just put on the fire. He decided to make a log shaped package that would produce a surprise bang and inside would be an almond and a motto. Soon the sugared almond was replaced with a small gift. Make your own Home made crackers in 6 easy steps 1: Gather your material you will need Toilet paper roll tubes Thin Wrapping Paper Ribbon, string or twine Small Gifts or Sweets Some other popular items to put in yours crackers are folded paper hats & jokes. See page 18 for a selection of jokes to use. 2 Fold the wrapping paper. Fold a standard piece of wrapping paper in half with the folded end closest to you. Place a toilet paper roll tube at that same end in the bottom centre of the wrapping paper.

4 Roll up your cracker. Starting with the folded end closest to you, roll wrapping paper around the tube and continue rolling tube until you reach the end of the wrapping paper. You can add a piece of tape to secure the wrapping paper if you’d like, but it’s not necessary since you’ll be tying up the ends anyway.

3 Stuff your cracker. I think it’s easiest to stuff your cracker at this point. You can also stuff it after you have rolled up the wrapping paper roll tube and have tied one side. If you have small pieces (like coins or candy), you can also stuff a few pieces of tissue paper into the ends of the tube to keep everything from flying out when the crackers are opened.

5 Twist and tie. Gently twist the tissue paper close to the tube and, using string or ribbon or whatever you’d like, tie off one end of the cracker. Repeat with the other side.Tying close to the toilet paper roll tube keeps the tension better for pulling the cracker apart.

Twas the Night before Christmas before Christmas, when all through the house, Twas thenotnight a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads. And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer. With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, and he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name! “Now Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!” As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, when they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky. So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, with the sleigh full of toys, and St Nicholas too. 26 26

27

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof the prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, and his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, and he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack. His eyes - how they twinkled! His dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, and the beard of his chin was as white as the snow. The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a broad face and a little round belly, that shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly! He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, and I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself! A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, and filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. and laying his finger aside of his nose, and giving a nod, up the chimney he rose! He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, and away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight, “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!” 28 28

There are hundreds of recipes for mulled wine (or gluhwein) and everyone has their own secret ingredient. Maybe a little dash of cognac, or another spice added. The important thing is to get the amount of sugar right. Too much sugar makes it too sickly and cloying, too little and the tartness loses much of the comfort factor that makes mulled wine so warming and festive. So the golden rule is to add less sugar than you think you’ll need, then taste the wine once it is warmed through and add more sugar just until it tastes right for you. Each wine will be different and individual tastes vary, so bask in the heady warmth of wine and spices and stand over your mulled wine tasting little sips until it is just right! Choosing a wine to mull is another important consideration. You don’t want to use total plonk, but it is a waste to use a well-aged bottle of prize wine. Ideally you should use a red wine that is not too tannic, so avoid wines aged in oak, but it should have enough flavour and body to be drinkable on its own. A medium bodied claret, chianti or merlot works well. Ingredients – Serves 10

2 bottles of medium-bodied red wine 1 cup sugar and more to taste 6 cinnamon sticks 15 cloves grated nutmeg 2 oranges Push the cloves into the skin of the oranges then cut the oranges in half. Pour the wine into a large stainless steel or enamel saucepan and warm over a medium heat. Add the sugar, spices and clove studded oranges. Keep an eye on the wine and turn the heat to very low as soon as it gets close to simmering. You don’t want it to boil or it will lose its alcohol content! Taste for sugar and add more until it tastes right for you. Keep it steaming over a low heat for an hour or so to allow the spices to infuse. Ladle it into glasses or mugs and breathe in the spicy aroma.

The spicy wafting aroma of mulled wine on a chilly winter’s evening gives a festive air to even the gloomiest of weather. The warming spices of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg and tangy zest of orange brighten up a plain red wine and put you in the mood for celebrating Christmas.

Other things you can add to mulled wine: Star anise, bay leaves, mace, ginger, cardamom, lemon, lime and brandy to name a few. 42

On Friday 2ND DecEMBER, Southdown LightS UP! The evening will start with the Christmas lights being switched on by the Town Mayor at 6pm. As per normal there will be plenty for the children to do on the night, with Father Christmas in his Grotto in the Methodist Church Hall, a fairground roundabout ride, face painting, Christmas Fayre and Craft market. Harpenden Fire Engine will be sounding its bells and giving the children the chance to have a look around too which is always popular! You will also have the opportunity to do some late-night shopping with a lot of the local shops opening late including Harpenden Cycles who have got their Christmas stock in, so if you want to see what bike “light’s up” your child’s imagination, pop in and say hello! If you get a bit peckish there is plenty of food on offer at the event, grab a takeaway or warm yourself up with a tasty curry at Shapla Indian Restaurant. If you fancy getting out of the cold, The Plough and Harrow, The Engineer, The Carpenters Arms & The Skew Bridge are the perfect places to go to for a refreshing drink, so take advantage of them on the night. Every year Southdown Lights Up supports a local charity, so please do give generously when you see a collection box or try your luck with a raffle ticket or two.
