On Dec. 24, 1955, a call was made to the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Operations Centre in Colorado Springs, Colo. However, this call was not from the president or a general. It was from a girl in Colorado Springs who was following the directions in an advertisement printed in the local paper – she wanted to know the whereabouts of Santa Claus.The ad said “Hey, Kiddies! Call me direct and be sure and dial the correct number.” However, the number was printed incorrectly in the advertisement and rang into the CONAD operations centre. On duty that night was Colonel Harry Shoup, who has come to be known as the “Santa Colonel.” Colonel Shoup received numerous calls that night and rather than hanging up, he had his operators find the location of Santa Claus and reported it to every child who phoned in that night.Thus began a tradition carried on by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) when it was formed in 1958. Today, through satellite systems, high-powered radars and jet fighters, NORAD tracks Santa Claus as he makes his Yuletide journey around the world.

HOME MADE CHRISTMAS CRACKERS

Christmas crackers are a British tradition dating back to Victorian times when in the early 1850s, London confectioner Tom Smith started adding a motto to his sugared almond bon-bons which he sold wrapped in a twisted paper package.

As many of his bon-bons were bought by men to give to women, many of the mottos were simple love poems. He was inspired to add the “bang” when he heard the crackle of a log he had just put on the fire. He decided to make a log shaped package that would produce a surprise bang and inside would be an almond and a motto. Soon the sugared almond was replaced with a small gift. Make your own Home made crackers in 6 easy steps 1: Gather your material you will need Toilet paper roll tubes Thin Wrapping Paper Ribbon, string or twine Small Gifts or Sweets Some other popular items to put in yours crackers are folded paper hats & jokes. See page 18 for a selection of jokes to use. 2 Fold the wrapping paper. Fold a standard piece of wrapping paper in half with the folded end closest to you. Place a toilet paper roll tube at that same end in the bottom centre of the wrapping paper.

4 Roll up your cracker. Starting with the folded end closest to you, roll wrapping paper around the tube and continue rolling tube until you reach the end of the wrapping paper.You can add a piece of tape to secure the wrapping paper if you’d like, but it’s not necessary since you’ll be tying up the ends anyway.

3 Stuff your cracker. I think it’s easiest to stuff your cracker at this point. You can also stuff it after you have rolled up the wrapping paper roll tube and have tied one side. If you have small pieces (like coins or candy), you can also stuff a few pieces of tissue paper into the ends of the tube to keep everything from flying out when the crackers are opened.

5 Twist and tie. Gently twist the tissue paper close to the tube and, using string or ribbon or whatever you’d like, tie off one end of the cracker. Repeat with the other side.Tying close to the toilet paper roll tube keeps the tension better for pulling the cracker apart.

Christmas Pie I love a good pie…delicious, comforting and warming perfect for a cold winter’s evening. This is another great recipe for using up your Christmas leftovers. I have used turkey, stuffing, roasted parsnips and carrots, but you can use any leftover meat and veg that you have in the fridge.

Ingredients: Oil 1 onion (finely chopped) 500g leftovers – turkey, roasted parsnips/carrots and stuffing (chopped) 2 tbsp plain flour 400ml gravy/stock 1 sheet of ready roll puff pastry 1 egg (beaten)

Boxing Day Curry This is a great way for using up your left over turkey (or any other cooked meat that you need to use up); itâ€™s a mild curry that is perfect for the whole family. Those who like a bit of spice can add some chopped chillies (fresh or dried.) Ingredients - Serves 4: Oil 1 onion (finely chopped) 2 garlic cloves (crushed) Thumb sized piece of ginger (finely grated) 2 tbsp. garam masala Â˝ tsp turmeric 1 tsp ground coriander Three finger pinch of chopped coriander 500g left over turkey -or any leftover, cooked meat (chopped) 500g passata 50 ml coconut milk Seasoning

Directions: 1. Heat the butter in a large pan and fry the onion over a medium heat for 5 minutes until soft 2. The spicy wafting aroma of mulled cider on a chilly winter’s evening gives a festive air to even the gloomiest of weather. The warming spices of cinnamon, star anise and nutmeg and tangy zest of orange brighten up a plain cider and put you in the mood for celebrating Christmas.

Mulled Cider Ingredients: 2 litres good-quality traditional cider 6 cloves 3-4 star anise ¼ nutmeg , finely grated into the pan 1 cinnamon stick 1 vanilla pod , halved 1 orange , juice of 2 clementines , juice of 1 pomegranate , juice and seeds of 4–5 tablespoons caster sugar Method 1 Pour the cider into a large pan on a low heat and let it warm through for a few minutes. Add all the spices and juices and turn the heat up. Once boiling, turn down to a simmer and leave to tick away for 5–8 minutes. 2 As everything infuses you’ll get delicious layers of flavour. Taste it and add sugar as you like.You don’t want it sweet; you just want the sugar to join the spices in a harmonious taste. When you’re happy with the flavours, ladle into glasses or mugs and serve warm.

Twas the Night before Christmas before Christmas, when all through the house, Twas thenotnight a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads. And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer. With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, and he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name! “Now Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!” As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, when they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky. So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, with the sleigh full of toys, and St Nicholas too. 38

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof the prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, and his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, and he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack. His eyes - how they twinkled! His dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, and the beard of his chin was as white as the snow. The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a broad face and a little round belly, that shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly! He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, and I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself! A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, and filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. and laying his finger aside of his nose, and giving a nod, up the chimney he rose! He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, and away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight, “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!” 40

Southdown Lights Switch On! Update on Southdown Christmas Lights Switch On - Friday 1 December 2017

Following comments and concerns that we have seen on social media, we want to give an update on this very important community event. The Southdown Christmas Light Switch on event will be held on Friday 1 December 2017 starting at 5.30pm. As ever it promises to be a brilliant family event with many great attractions including carol singing and folk dancing from the English miscellany, childrenâ€™s fairground rides, shops opening late and a range of Christmas stalls. The Christmas lights will be switched on by the Town Mayor at 6.00pm. Like last year, we will be lighting up various trees, lamp columns and of course the Christmas tree. Compared to last year, the only difference is that there will be no lights along the shop fronts (for reasons set out below). We are aware that the Methodist church have decided to not run a carol service inside of their venue partly due to safety but also due to a desire to support the community event going on outside. The Town Council are working closely with the Methodist church and Southdown traders to put on a great event. We hope that you will join in the fun and attend the event to support those who have put in lots of effort to organise it for the community.

Reason for no lighting along shop frontages Each year we have to apply for a licence from Ringway (on behalf of Hertfordshire County Council) to allow us to put up festive lighting above pavements and the road. The licence process was changed last year bringing in much more stringent requirements. The Town Council worked hard to meet these requirements last year and were able to produce the fantastic displays across the Town Centre, Southdown and Batford. As part of our approach to securing the licence we carry out annual checks on various aspects of health and safety. When carrying out these checks this year we identified a problem with the anchor bolts used for the lights above the Southdown shops and with the power supply feeding those lights. Unfortunately, there was not an appropriate quick and cost-effective solution to the problem that could be implemented in time for this yearâ€™s Southdown switch on so we had to take the decision not to include them in the scheme. Their inclusion in the scheme would have meant we would not have got a licence and would have jeopardised being able to have the wider Christmas tree and lamp column displays. The Town Council will review the scheme next year as always and will include considerations to the lights on shop frontages.

Christmas Wonderland at Batford Springs Sunday 10th December 2017

Christmas Wonderland at Batford Springs is a Brand New Event for 2017 that will bring a great deal of festive fun for the families of Batford and surrounding area. Traditionally, ‘The Batford Lights Up’ held at Batford Corner featured a few stalls and local entertainment but due to the volume of people attending each year the decision has been taken to move this event to a bigger site meaning more stalls, more activities and simply more fun and what’s more it’s over a longer time period. The main man himself will be at the event in his sleigh along with a full afternoon’s entertainment that has been scheduled. The switching on of the lights, is still at the forefront of the event and following the closing of the Christmas Wonderland 2017 Santa’s Chief Elf will lead families on a walk through ‘Elf Woods’ which will lead us all back to Batford Corner ready for the 5pm switch on by the Mayor.

The event starts at 5.30pm until 7:30pm with the Christmas lights being switched on by the Town Mayor at 6pm. As per normal there will be plenty for the children to do on the night, with Father Christmas in his Grotto in the Methodist Church Hall, a fairground roundabout ride, face painting, Christmas Fayre and Craft market. Harpenden Fire Engine will be sounding its bells and giving the children the chance to have a look around too which is always popular! You will also have the opportunity to do some late-night shopping with a lot of the local shops opening late including Harpenden Cycles who have got their Christmas stock in, so if you want to see what bike “light’s up” your child’ s imagination, pop in and say hello! If you get a bit peckish there is plenty of food on offer at the event, grab a takeaway. If you fancy getting out of the cold, The Plough and Harrow, The Engineer, The Carpenters Arms and The Skew Bridge are the perfect places to go to for a refreshing drink, so take advantage of them on the night.
