A Message from your Mayor If you’re like me, each year you look forward to participating in the many tremendous winter recreation opportunities available in Delta. This 2020 Winter Leisure Guide is your source to find the activities that are right for you – whether you want to enjoy the crisp weather outdoors or stay warm inside, our programming offers something for everyone. This Leisure Guide is packed with great programs and classes; three highlights for me are: • Kathak, Classical Indian Dance (page 9) • Pickleball (page 32) • Heritage Week (page 41) These are just three great options out of many, so as you read through this Leisure Guide, I encourage you to sign up for the classes and programs that interest you most so you can learn something new and improve your personal fitness to start the new year off right. For many, starting the new year off right means jumping in the chilly waters of Boundary Bay for the Polar Bear Swim – this year will be the 40th anniversary of this time-honoured and fun event for the heartiest in our community.

George V. Harvie Mayor

Delta Council has led great improvements in accessing programs and facilities in 2019. Through our Delta Families First initiative, we established the free Baby Daze program for new parents, advance registration for Delta residents to ensure you get access to your favourite programs, and the free Youth Admission Pass for Delta youth aged 10-18. Delta’s youth are obviously as excited about this program as we are – more than 6,200 youth have already signed up for the pass in just a few short months. We also recently established a new North Delta Recreation Centre Fitness Pass that allows you to use the weight room and fitness studio at the North Delta Recreation Centre at a reduced rate. Whatever your fitness and activity goals are this winter, I am confident you will be able to meet them with the help of the offerings in this Leisure Guide. On behalf of Delta Council, I hope you have a wonderful holiday season and wish everyone a happy new year.

Mayor George V. Harvie

A Message from Delta’s Parks, Recreation & Culture Commission The Parks, Recreation & Culture Commission provides Delta Council and staff with policy advice and direction on the planning, development, use, operation and service delivery of all recreation and culture programs, civic buildings, properties, parks, open spaces and sports fields. Starting in 2020, through the hard work of Delta Staff, we are looking forward to introducing Delta residents to the brand new North Delta Centre for the Arts. This state of the art facility will not only house high-quality arts programs and courses, but will also be the home for some exhilarating performances. We look forward to showing you more of what Delta Parks, Recreation & Culture has in store for 2020.

Linda Szentes, vocalist, and her band return to Delta for a musical homage to Doris Day and Anita O’ Day - two incredibly popular and influential female singers. These women shared some similarities: they were contemporaries who started their careers singing with big bands in the 40’s; however, when the scene changed dramatically after the war, their paths diverged. Doris Day, the ‘girl next door’ with the golden voice, established herself as a singing/dancing/ acting sensation in Hollywood for more than two decades; the ‘Jezebel of Jazzz’, Anita O’Day, shattered the image of the girl singer that Doris helped to create. Anita became one of the most ‘hip’ and widely admired jazz singers in history. ND Arts Sa, Feb 8, Doors at 7pm. Concert at 7:30pm. $18/person presale, $20/person at the door. Dog Parks Off-Leash Areas Dogs on a Leash

Dogs on a leash are welcome in all Delta parks and off-leash areas. For the safety and consideration of park users, dog owners must follow these basic rules: Stoop & scoop. Clean up after your dog and properly dispose of dog waste. Respect other users - you are responsible for your dog’s behaviour. Aggressive dogs must be muzzled at all times. Dogs are not allowed in playgrounds, water parks, athletic park/fields or school grounds. Dogs must remain at least 10 metres away from these areas. No dogs allowed on synthetic turf fields. No dogs allowed on grass fields when in use by sports teams. Dog owners/handlers are restricted to 2 dogs at any time in Delta parks. Dogs must wear a collar or harness and display their licence at all times.

Dogs Off-Leash Well-trained dogs who respond to voice commands can enjoy off-leash privileges in designated areas only. The following additional rules apply to off-leash areas in Delta: Dogs are not allowed to be off-leash in areas surrounding designated off-leash areas. Carry a leash at all times. If your dog becomes unruly or exhibits aggressive behaviour, leash your dog immediately and leave the off-leash area. Be cautious about bringing your dogs’ toy to an off-leash area. Other dogs may try to take it, causing an unwelcome confrontation. Commercial dog walking is available, by permit, at the North 40 Park Reserve. More than 2 dogs (to a maximum of 4 dogs) are allowed off-leash at a time. To learn more about Delta’s Commercial Dog Walking program go to delta.ca. You must ensure your dog is: Under control and in your view at all times; Not harassing, chasing or attacking any person or animal; and Returns to you immediately when called.

Delta artists age 15-25 are encouraged to submit their films to be shown at the North Delta Centre for the Arts in February. The catch? Films can only be three minutes long. This year’s theme is “The Culture of Heritage: Place and Space” and can be interpreted any way you see fit in narrative, documentary or animated form. Once submitted along with the application form, it will be reviewed by a panel of judges before being shown to the public in February. All films are subject to review by a panel and may be rejected due to size and space constraint. Submissions are due Friday, December 20. For questions and application forms, contact agrant@delta.ca.

Delta’s indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities are great places to learn water safety, how to swim, get and stay in shape, have some fun or volunteer and work at. Delta pools are staffed by creative and fun-loving lifeguards who ensure everyone has a great time while staying active and safe in the water.

Swirl Pool Age Guidelines All children under 13 years of age may use the swirl pools when accompanied by someone 16 years or older.

Special Features Diving boards, rope drop, mat walk, inflatables, climbing wall (dependent on facility) are open when program space allows.

Pool Etiquette and Guidelines • Children under the age of 7 must be within arm’s reach someone 16 years or older at all times: 1 adult to a maximum of 3 children under the age of 7. • Outside shoes are not allowed on the pool deck; they can track in dirt and germs, which contaminate the pool. Please go barefoot or bring in non-slip footwear when on the pool deck. • Always remember to walk on the deck. • Health regulations require that everyone take a cleansing shower using soap before entering the pool or swirl pool areas. • Our family change rooms are very busy spaces. These rooms are for people with children of the opposite gender and their caregiver, and for people with disabilities. Please ensure that you remove your belongings from these spaces when not in use. • Diving is permitted only in the deep end of the main/sunshine pools.

• Should an injury occur when at the pool, report it to the Lifeguard staff right away. • In an emergency, follow the directions of the Lifeguard staff. • For health and safety, please do not go into the pool if you have an illness, head cold, open sores, bandages, or an infection from the ears and eyes. • Our sauna rooms, steam rooms and swirl pools are all designated quiet zones. Please talk quietly. With a little courtesy, lap swimming can work for everyone. Please: • Always swim to the right of the lane and pass on the left. • Be aware of what is going on in your lane. • Move graciously to a different lane if asked by a Lifeguard to do so. • Allow a faster swimmer to pass you. • Move to another lane that is more appropriate for your swimming speed if you are constantly being passed by other swimmers.

Buckles’ Water Safety Tip: Drownings can happen in seconds! Be aware of your surroundings! In the winter and spring months, the water consistency changes from ice to liquid. This means that there are still water hazards around and drowning can still happen in seconds. Be careful when going for walks or bike rides and to be vigilant in children supervision. A person can fall through ice and have a water emergency.

Some water hazards are: • Dykes • Rivers or creeks • Farmer’s pond made into a skating area • Partially frozen lakes • Bogs • Sloughs

Before stepping onto any ice surface here are some ice safety tips: • Stay off any ice surface on warm or stormy days • Check ice conditions before going on and obey all ice warning signs • Keep away from unfamiliar paths or unknown ice • Children should only play on ice under adult supervision. Children not within arm’s reach have ventured too far

Please visit Delta.ca for up-to-date facility schedules. Please note that on Statutory Holidays aquatic facilities maintain regular hours of operation and regular admission rates apply.
