A Message from your Mayor Summer is always one of the most exciting times of the year. From community festivals like North Delta Family Day and Tsawwassen Sunfest, to major events like Tour de Delta and Boundary Bay Airshow, on top of all the exciting programs and activities we offer daily, this summer is certainly shaping up to be one of the busiest times of the year. This season also welcomes some brand new elements to Delta Parks, Recreation & Culture, as part of the Delta Families First initiative. First, starting May 17, 2019, Delta residents will be able to sign-up two weeks before non-residents for registered programs, making it easier for families to plan their schedules. Second, starting July 1, Delta youth between ages 10 and 18, or in Grades 5 through 12, will be eligible for a free Youth Admission Pass. This pass will give Delta youth unprecedented access to Delta Parks, Recreation & Culture facilities and drop-in activities.

George V. Harvie Finally, starting July 3, we invite new parents to attend our new, free Baby Daze program. This program will run once a week at both the North Delta Recreation Mayor Centre and South Delta Recreation Centre, providing parents with newborn children the chance to socialize and learn valuable information from a medical health professional. We are extremely proud of the excellent programming listed throughout this Leisure Guide and look forward to seeing you at the summer events throughout our communities.

Mayor George V. Harvie

A Message from Delta’s Parks, Recreation & Culture Commission The Parks, Recreation & Culture Commission provides Delta Council and staff with policy advice and direction on the planning, development, use, operation and service delivery of all recreation and culture programs, civic buildings, properties, parks, open spaces and sport fields. We have become accustomed to some phenomenal west coast summers that demand we get outside and explore our naturally beautiful community. Our wonderfully manicured parks and trails are ideal for afternoon or early-evening strolls, and there is simply no better way to spend a hot day than at one of the outdoor pools in Ladner and North Delta, or at the Water Spray Parks at Diefenbaker Park, Memorial Park, or Annieville Lions Park.

Don Sangster Chair

We are also very excited to present to you another season of outstanding community events starting with Ladner Pioneer May Days in May through to the Luminary Festival in September. We look forward to seeing you there.

For more information on programs or services, please contact Delta.ca/TalkDelta or call 604-946-3293

ADVENTURE PLAYGROUNDS

RETURN TO DELTA! Add a little more adventure to your summer at our two summer adventure play spaces! North Delta Recreation Centre & South Delta Recreation Centre July 2–September 2, 2019 | 10:30am-5pm A play attendant will be scheduled from 10:30am-5pm every day to hand out tools for building and creating within the playground area.

What is an Adventure Playground? Unlike any other playground in Delta, the adventure playgrounds provide a space for children to engage in unstructured play and exploration of their surroundings. Children will have tools and materials to build their own play space and have the freedom to develop skills that will shape their entire lives: resilience, creativity, independence, problem-solving, and teamwork. They will build, create, use their imagination, be adventurous and active, and create a place that currently exists only in their imaginations—all while learning to assess risk.

ADVENTURE PLAYGROUNDS ARE A FREE, DROP-IN ACTIVITY OFFERED THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER IN DELTA. delta.ca/adventureplay

Delta is excited to bring back the Adventure Playgrounds in North and South Delta this summer. The playgrounds are a free, drop-in activity offered throughout summer.

What is an Adventure Playground? Unlike any other playground in Delta, the adventure playgrounds provide a space for children to engage in unstructured play and exploration of their surroundings. Children will build, create, use their imagination, be adventurous and active, and create a place that currently exists only in their imaginations—all while learning to assess risk.

Dog Parks Off-Leash Areas Dogs on a Leash

Dogs on a leash are welcome in all Delta parks and off-leash areas. For the safety and consideration of park users, dog owners must follow these basic rules: Stoop & scoop. Clean up after your dog and properly dispose of dog waste. Respect other users - you are responsible for your dog’s behaviour. Aggressive dogs must be muzzled at all times. Dogs are not allowed in playgrounds, water parks, athletic park/fields or school grounds. Dogs must remain at least 10 metres away from these areas. No dogs allowed on synthetic turf fields. No dogs allowed on grass fields when in use by sports teams. Dog owners/handlers are restricted to 2 dogs at any time in Delta parks. Dogs must wear a collar or harness and display their licence at all times.

Dogs Off-Leash Well-trained dogs who respond to voice commands can enjoy off-leash privileges in designated areas only. The following additional rules apply to off-leash areas in Delta: Dogs are not allowed to be off-leash in areas surrounding designated off-leash areas. Carry a leash at all times. If your dog becomes unruly or exhibits aggressive behaviour, leash your dog immediately and leave the off-leash area. Be cautious about bringing your dogs’ toy to an off-leash area. Other dogs may try to take it, causing an unwelcome confrontation. Commercial dog walking is available, by permit, at the North 40 Park Reserve. More than 2 dogs (to a maximum of 4 dogs) are allowed off-leash at a time. To learn more about Delta’s Commercial Dog Walking program go to delta.ca. You must ensure your dog is: Under control and in your view at all times; Not harassing, chasing or attacking any person or animal; and Returns to you immediately when called.

Delta’s indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities are great places to learn water safety, how to swim, get and stay in shape, have some fun or volunteer and work at. Delta pools are staffed by creative and fun-loving lifeguards who ensure everyone has a great time while staying active and safe in the water.

Swirl Pool Age Guidelines All children under 13 years of age may use the swirl pools when accompanied by an adult age 16 years or older.

Special Features Diving boards, rope drop, mat walk, inflatables, climbing wall (dependent on facility) are open during peak times, programs and other activities permitting.

Pool Etiquette and Guidelines • Children under the age of 7 must be within arm’s reach of an adult age 16 years or older at all times: 1 adult to a maximum of 3 children under the age of 7. • Outside shoes are not allowed on the pool deck; they can track in dirt and germs, which contaminate the pool. Please go barefoot or bring in non-slip footwear when on the pool deck. • Always remember to walk on the deck. • Health regulations require that everyone take a cleansing shower using soap before entering the pool or swirl pool areas. • Our family change rooms are very busy spaces. These rooms are for people with children of the opposite gender and their caregiver, and for people with disabilities. Please ensure that you remove your belongings from these spaces when not in use. • Diving is permitted only in the deep end of the main/sunshine pools. • Should an injury occur when at the pool, report it to the Lifeguard staff right away.

• In an emergency, follow the directions of the Lifeguard staff. • For health and safety, please do not go into the pool if you have an illness, head cold, open sores, bandages, or an infection from the ears and eyes. • Our sauna rooms, steam rooms and swirl pools are all designated quiet zones. Please talk quietly. With a little courtesy, lap swimming can work for everyone. Please: • Always swim to the right of the lane and pass on the left. • Be aware of what is going on in your lane. • Move graciously to a different lane if asked by a Lifeguard to do so. • Allow a faster swimmer to pass you. • Move to another lane that is more appropriate for your swimming speed if you are constantly being passed by other swimmers

Buckles’ Water Safety Tip: For many Canadian Families, summer is spent in or around water. Each year there are tragic and avoidable water related incidents that occur. Do your part in ensuring children stay safe this summer by providing Active Supervision: • The absence of adult supervision is a factor in most child drownings. • Whether it’s a pool, the bathtub, a water park, or the beach, always watch children actively around water-even if they can swim. • Consider requiring all non-swimmers to wear a lifejacket to keep them at the surface to assist you while supervising. Please visit Delta.ca for up-to-date facility schedules. Please note that on Statutory Holidays aquatic facilities maintain regular hours of operation and regular admission rates apply.
