April Showers

I turn 42 at the end of the month, and as I reflect on my 40’s thus far, I have made some observations. The positives are that I have been enjoying new hobbies such as needlepointing and learning Spanish. I also have been playing lots of pickleball, albeit as I write this, I have my calf icing from doing a celebratory karate kick, my body would never have betrayed me like that 10 years ago. I have also noticed how much I think and talk about the weather. I call my best friend the second there is moisture in the air, or an uptick in the wind. And don’t get me started on when fog rolls in, what a thrill.

It’s not just local weather; my mom calls to alert me when meteorologist Jim Cantore is on the move, and we watch with bated breath as the scene unfolds.

Growing up in New Mexico, it was dry and hot, except for glorious afternoon monsoons in the summer and freak snowstorms (RIP Halloween of 1995). The first time weather struck my interest was when I was a child, and we read Night of the Twisters in school. Soon after the movie Twister was released, and to say I was taken with tornadoes is an understatement. I had my dad paint my room the color of the sky before the storm, an unattractive green. I would play pretend that I was a storm chaser, furiously trying to escape an F-5

beast. Funnily enough, I went to college where tornadoes were very possible, on the border of Eastern New Mexico and West Texas. My infatuation turned into nervousness, rightfully so, as fate would have it, the town sadly lost our Long John Silvers to a strong cyclone. Sad day for frozen fish stick lovers.

Coronado weather, on the other hand…what a beaut. Sure, we have some toasty days thanks to the Santa Anas, maybe some hail or an occasional waterspout. It would be remiss of me not to mention the devastatingly unexpected storm of January 2024. I vividly remember having breakfast with my mom and sister at Night and Day Café, on a cozy rainy morning. It was absolutely pouring; we were in

awe, staring out the window as we ate our California burritos. A member of our business, Coronado Fitness Club, took cover inside and saw me, asking if I had talked to my husband. I hadn’t, and they suggested I get over there ASAP. I sloshed through the puddles, Orange Ave more like Orange River. I walked in on all the employees, desperate, sweeping out water, trying to strategically place buckets under the leaking ceiling. Within minutes, a part of the roof collapsed, the basement parking garage was completely flooded, and our manager’s car was submerged. And during all this chaos, a message from the principal that the first floor of the school had flooded, and to come and grab our kids.

An utter mess. So much damage to people’s homes and businesses, but in true Coronado fashion, our community stepped up. Nothing will give you hope in humanity like a natural disaster! We sure can be weather wimps in Southern California, but that was a doozy! As I look at the weather for the fifth time today, we are expecting four days of rain. Sandbags are at the ready, and sunny days ahead!

... Hope Springs Eternal ...

Can you feel the excitement in the air?

Time to open your closets and dust off the brown and yellow jerseys because its……

PADRES SEASON!

The beginning of spring starts with the lights at PETCO shining brightly in the night sky and the throwing of the first pitch. The Coronado ferry transporting throngs of Padres fans across the waterway to spend the evening at the ballpark cheering on our favorite team in hopes of a world series berth in October. Signs adorn the lawns of Coronado locals displaying “Nado for Machado”, and “Coronado Loves the Padres”. It truly is April when the boys of summer come back to the park.

The month of April also has religious meaning for so many. Easter and Passover are wonderful celebrations this month. They are connected throughout history and signify sacrifice and redemption for the Christians and the Jews. April Fool’s Day allows us to pull pranks on anyone with the excuse of April 1st made me do it. There are spring festivals throughout the month of April. Earth Day is April 22nd showing support for the planting of new trees and beach cleaning projects. Let’s not forget the Coronado Flower Show on April 18th and 19th

A tradition since 1922, the flower show brings the community together to celebrate the beauty of all things green and floral.

Take the time in April to be outside enjoying life with family and friends. We are blessed to have the best weather in the country, the greatest ballpark, and a community that brings us together.

Regardless of the occasion, we need a fun spring cocktail. There is an annual award given to the best defensive players in the MLB for each position. It is named the golden glove because these players are the best of the best. We have several Padres on this elite list who have received this honor multiple times:

Tony Gwynn (5)

Benito Santiago (3)

Ken Caminiti (3)

Fernando Tatis Jr. (2)

Adrian Gonzalez (2)

Trent Grisham (2)

Dave Winfield (2)

Steve Finley (2)

Ozzie Smith (2)

Ha-Seong Kim (2)

Greg Maddux (1)

NOTE: Manny Machado – beloved Padres 3rd baseman won (2) gold gloves when he was with the Baltimore orioles.

In honor of baseball season and our country’s national pastime, I encourage you to enjoy the GOLDEN GLOVE cocktail. A refreshing mix with the flavors of spring and summer.

GO PADRES!!

Welcome to Kansas City – the Heart of America

Also known as the City of Fountains, Paris of the Plains, and the barbecue capital of America, Kansas City is a dynamic destination overflowing with genuine Midwestern hospitality.

When I mentioned to my daughter Chelsea that I was writing about Kansas City, she didn’t miss a beat. “Mom, do you remember when we went there on that car trip?”

Oh, I remember. Some 35 years ago my husband and I packed up our two kids, ages five and nine, and set out for parts unknown. We had two weeks of vacation time, and with the help AAA and a stack of maps, I plotted a loop that would take us through places I had always wanted to see: Utah’s national parks, Aspen, Colorado Springs, and as far east as Kansas City. Then we took a southern route home, with an unexpected encounter with a Civil War encampment in Carthage, Missouri, a jaunt up to Santa Fe and finally unwinding with a hotel resort in Scottsdale.

Chelsea still remembers the visit to the Hallmark Visitors Center at Crown Center. What I remember most is how welcoming and helpful everyone was. I’m happy to tell you that hasn’t changed one bit.

I revisited Kansas City on a road trip last fall, and found the city is better than ever (just wait ’til I tell you about the KC Streetcar!) and darn worth a visit – whether you travel by car or jet. The city’s newly renovated airport is just 20 minutes from downtown, and since Kansas City is situated smackdab in the middle of our country, it takes only three hours by air from either coast to get you to this heart of America.

I stayed at Loews Kansas City Hotel. You know I’m partial to Loews – who wouldn’t be after experiencing Loews Coronado Bay Resort? Loews Kansas City is a stunning property that is connected via a pedestrian bridge to the Kansas City Convention Center and the hotel handles all the catering for the center.

Let’s start with some basics

There’s a Kansas City, Missouri, and a Kansas City, Kansas. Kansas City, Missouri is the larger and more famous of the two (population 516,032 in 2024), with a bigger downtown core, and a major cultural and entertainment hub, plus a strong arts, jazz and sports scene. Kansas City, Kansas is more residential in nature, with a population of 156,752 (again, 2024 census) with strong cultural diversity. It’s home to the Kansas City Speedway, a major NASCAR venue, with its annual race happening this month (April 19 – 21) just two months before NASCAR debuts at Naval Base Coronado (June 19-21). Together the two cities anchor a metro area of 2.2 million people, even though they are in different states.

In the early 1800s, the area that is now Kansas City, Missouri sat at the junction of the Missouri and Kansas rivers, a prime spot for trade and westward

expansion. In 1853 it incorporated as the City of Kansas – named after the Kansas River. By 1889 it was renamed Kansas City to match how people referred to it. The city grew rapidly thanks to railroads, stockyards and industry, becoming the dominant urban center in the region.

Kansas City, Kansas came later. The Kansas Territory was created in 1854, with lands just west of Missouri. The settlement of Wyandotte popped up just across the river. In 1872, Wyandotte renamed itself Kansas City to capitalize on the success and recognition of its Missouri neighbor. Smart move.

The respective city’s visitor bureaus work together hosting travel writers and in the course of three days, their communications directors shared with me the best their cities had to offer – far more than I would have been able to see on my own in such a concentrated period.

Union Station Hop aboard the KC Streetcar

One of the most convenient ways to navigate downtown Kansas City is the KC Streetcar, a modern, fare-free transit line that has quickly become a defining feature of the city’s urban core.

My timing on visiting Kansas City couldn’t have been better: the much anticipated 3.7-mile extension to the KC Streetcar had opened just two months before my arrival. The original streetcar line opened in May 2016, running about 2.2 miles along Main Street from the River Market area through downtown. Designed as both a transportation link and an economic development tool, it helped reconnect key districts and encouraged visitors to explore the city without needing a car.

The modern, quiet, clean and ohso-efficient streetcars run all the way from Downtown Kansas City, where I stayed, to the River Market and to the University of Missouri – Kansas City and connected me to all the sites I wanted to see. Plus, I found I never had to wait more than 10 minutes for another car to arrive. Pretty sweet.

I disembarked the streetcar at Union Station Kansas City, which stands as one of the city’s most impressive landmarks – a grand Beaux-Arts terminal that reflects both the city’s past as a rail hub and its present as a place of culture and connection.

Opened in 1915 during the height of railroad travel, the station once served thousands of passengers daily at a time when rail was the primary means of long-distance transportation across the county. After falling into decline in the mid-20th century, it was restored and reopened in the 1990s, transformed into a vibrant civic space.

Inside the vast main hall, I was struck by the soaring ceilings and marble floors. It was November, and so a large Christmas tree and holiday décor filled the station. Off to one side, a Harvey’s at Union Station restaurant continues a tradition tied to the Fred Harvey Company, which once operated dining rooms in railroad stations across the West. Today, Union Station is served by Amtrak, with trains arriving and departing frequently from underground platforms connected to the historic

Beyond its transportation role, Union Station is home to Science City interactive museum. The station also houses the Regnier “Extreme Screen,” the largest screen in the region – five stories tall, 80 feet wide with laser projection. It exhibits family-friendly films, educational flicks and, in the winter months, classic films.

Inside the station at the north end of the Grand Plaza is the Model Train Gallery, a free exhibit spanning 8,000 square feet with intricately detailed model train layouts and more than 80 trains, ranging from tiny Z scale to much large G scales, running on different tracks.

The KC Streetcar connects Kansas City’s most popular neighborhoods and sites along its newly extended 5.7 mile route, and, even better, it’s free. Photo courtesy of Visit Kansas City.

Crown Center

From Union Station, it’s an easy and comfortable walk across Pershing Road to Crown Center via a network of elevated climate-controlled skywalks that connect much of the surrounding area. Although the weather was mild on this November day, it was easy to imagine how invaluable these passageways must be during the sweltering humid days of summer or in the depths of a freezing Midwestern winter.

Crown Center offers a Kansas City experience that combines shopping, culture and family-friendly attractions into a single walkable complex. It was built around the headquarters of Hallmark Cards, which was founded in Kansas City in 1914 when Joyce C. Hall started selling postcards out of his small bookstore. That bookstore was destroyed by fire the following year, but Joyce and his brother rebuilt the company, focusing more broadly

on greeting cards; they wisely adopted the name Hallmark in 1928, reflecting both their family name and a tradition of quality. Today, the 85-acre Crown Center has grown from the company headquarters to feature hotels, theaters, shopping, restaurants and open public spaces. This family-friendly center features an attraction called Kaleidoscope, an interactive children’s art studio that utilizes Hallmark and Crayola materials and there’s a Crayola store. (Hallmark acquired Crayola in

The Crossroads Arts District

Just a block off the KC Streetcar, I discovered one of new favorite neighborhoods of Kansas City: the Crossroads. It represents more than the intersection of Southwest Boulevard and Baltimore Avenue – it’s a vibrant and diverse community where artistic expression leads the way. In fact, the Crossroads is home to more than 400 local artists and 100 independent studios. And when I say, “home to,” I mean they live there – often above their galleries.

Best time to visit? That would be the First Friday of every month when the community comes alive at 5 p.m. with arts organizations, galleries, studios and businesses in the district. You’ll find music and art both in the galleries and on the streets with individual venders and pop-up retailers. In the summer months, there’s also a Food Truck central, although there is definitely no shortage of casual and high-end restaurants here.

One of the hippest coffee houses in the district is Café Corazón, where I had the

pleasure of meeting co-owner Dulcinea Herrera. This one-of-a-kind coffee house specializes in Latinx coffee and is also the premier café in the Midwest serving traditional Yerba Mate tea. I adored the Argentinian empanadas but there are also Mexican tamales and burritos.

Dulcinea is not only the CEO and founder of Kansas City’s first Latinx and Indigenous-owned coffee shop, she is also an artist and is married to a professional soccer player, who plays for the Brazilian national team. She owns the shop (and two others in Kansas City) in partnership with her parents, Miel Castagna-Herrera and Curtis Herrera; Miel’s father Alberto Jose Castagna grew up in Buenos Aires and emigrated to the U.S. when he was 16. It was Alberto who taught Dulcinea to paint and much of her art is displayed on the walls at the café. Her parents were hippies, she said, who met at Woodstock and moved to New Mexico. “My dad is Mexican and Apache, so we incorporate native recipes; it’s ancestral and it’s also the future,” she says.

1984.) There’s also a Legoland Discovery Center, the Sea Life Kansas City Aquarium and an open-air public plaza that turns into an ice skating rink in the winter months and a parklike setting for the public’s use, outdoor festivals and performances the rest of the year.

I stopped in at the fairly new Museum of BBQ. It not only presents the history of barbecue but breaks down the elements of barbeque – meats, smoke, fire, rubs and sauces. Another section takes you through the major American barbecue regions, including Kansas City, Texas, Memphis and the Carolinas, highlighting how each developed its own distinct flavors and traditions. The only drawback of the museum is that it doesn’t offer tastes from each region, although it does sell sauces and rubs in its gift shop. But the good news is that you can dine in or order take-out from Burnt End BBQ, also located at Crown Center.

“On First Fridays, we are the busiest business on the block,” Dulcinea says. “Art vendors, salsa music… It’s one big party.”

National World War I Memorial and Museum

I stepped off the KC Streetcar at the new 27th and Main stop and made my way up a gradual climb to one of the highest points in Kansas City, a fitting spot for the National World War I Memorial and Museum.

Inside, I began my journey into the past by crossing a glass bridge suspended over a field of red poppies – 9,000 of them each representing 1,000 lives lost in what has come to be known as “The Great War” and reminiscent of the poem, “In Flanders Fields,” written by John McCrae, a Canadian physician who served as a military doctor during the WWI. The exhibits then guided me through the mounting tensions in early 20th century Europe: a web of alliances, rising nationalism, and the spark of the war, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in 1914. What began as a regional crisis quickly escalated into a global war.

I saw how the United States initially resisted involvement, only entering the conflict in 1917 after repeated provocations, including unrestricted submarine warfare and the Zimmermann Telegram, a secret diplomatic message sent in January 1917 from the German foreign minister to Mexico, urging Mexico to ally with Germany if the U.S. decided to enter the war. In return Germany promised to help Mexico regain territories it had lost to the United States.

The story is told not just through timelines, but through personal letters, uniforms and artifacts that bring the war to a human scale. I found the use of chemical warfare particularly terrifying. Germany was the first to use poisonous in 1915, but France and Britain developed and used their own chemical agents in retaliation. Even the U.S. employed poisonous gas after entering the war in 1917. Outside, I took the elevator to the top of the 217-foot high Liberty Memorial Tower. As Kansas City stretched out in sweeping view, I found myself reflecting on how fortunate we are to live in freedom. It was an appreciation made all the more profound after walking through the relics and reminders of battlefields that, just over a century ago, bore witness to the immense cost of that very liberty.

Country Club Plaza

The Country Club District is one of the largest and most historically significant planned residential districts in the country. It was developed by real estate pioneer J. C. Nichols, who moved to Kansas City as a young man and entered the real estate business in the early 20th century. He became a pioneer of the planned subdivision community, emphasizing curvilinear streets, landscaped boulevards, restrictive covenants (which later became controversial) and architectural standards. Nichols also played a major role in the fundraising efforts for the National World War I Memorial and Museum; the project raised more than $2.5 million in just 10 days.

His most famous achievement is Country Club Plaza. Often considered the first regional shopping center in the United States, the Plaza features Spanish Colonial Revival architecture and was designed as an integrated retail district rather than a collection of individual stores. Nichols drew inspiration for the Plaza from Seville, Spain, with stucco buildings, red tile roofs, courtyards, and

decorative details creating a distinctive open-air environment. The iconic tower of the Plaza is modeled after a landmark in Seville.

The Plaza is the city’s most iconic hub for fountains, including mythological figures including Poseidon and Neptune, along with Art Deco and neoclassical fountains that incorporate seasonal lighting. The Sculpture of the Horse and Rider and Maharaja Fountain are highlights.

I found a mix of mostly nationally known retailers, among them Apple, J. Crew, Eileen Fisher, Lululemon and Sephora, interspersed with a few smaller specialty shops and local boutiques throughout the 15-acre development. Dining is equally central to the experience, with a range of options from casual cafés to upscale restaurants.

One standout is Rye, where I met Makenzie Wolters, communications manager for Visit Kansas City, for lunch. This popular café is known for its farm-to-table approach and comfortfood driven menu. With dishes like pork chops, pot roast and fried chicken

(my choice, and it was a winner), Rye emphasizes familiar Midwestern flavors that the owners, husband and wife chefs Colby and Megan Garrelts, grew up with. Colby is a James Beard Award-winning chef and Megan is a pastry chef and also a James Beard Award semifinalist whose desserts — especially pies and ice creams – have become a signature part of the Rye experience.

1587 Prime - Touchdown

I do believe that 1587 Prime will go down as one of the top five dining experiences of my life, and I encourage you to put this new restaurant on your list. Owned by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce in partnership with hospitality group Noble 33, the restaurant opened just two months before my visit on Mahomes birthday, Sept. 17. The name is a play on the Chief players’ jersey numbers – Mahomes is 15 and Kelce is 87.

It’s definitely a splurge and you should book reservations just as soon as you know you’re headed to Kansas City. Fortunately, I have friends in high places, and Visit Kansas City’s Makenzie Wolters, set up and accompanied me on this memorable dinner.

We met for a quick cocktail at Stilwell’s, the popular lounge in Loews’ lobby, then headed out the west door of the hotel, and made a quick left to behold the entrance to 1587 Prime. You see, the two-story, 10,000-square-foot

restaurant is located on the Loews Hotel property but maintains its own identity, with a sleek street entrance. Guests arrive through a dramatic twodoor “dark tunnel” that evokes the anticipation of players stepping onto

Above: The entrance to 1587 Prime resembles a tunnel that football players travel to reach the gridiron; but here the view opens up to its meat case display. Photo courtesy of Nobel 33.

the field, culminating in a glowing refrigerated meat display – the symbolic light at the end of the tunnel. Chiefsinspired colors of red, white and gold thread through the interiors, and brass floor inlays evoke yard markers.

At the center of the restaurant, a 20-seat bar and live music stage anchor the first floor. Millwork patterned with deconstructed football shapes wrap the bar front.

An elegant, curved marble staircase with subtle backlighting leads to the second level, which features panoramic views of the cityscape. Did I mention how elegant the décor is here? White marble flecked with grey is accented by rich wood accents, a center bar on the upper level features soft ambient light and gentle curves, and the ceiling above the bar area ripples with undulating wood. As we were escorted to our table, I noted the custom chandeliers, which at first I thought resembled a Sputnik-like space age design but later learned were subtly evocative of football’s flag-onthe-play referee’s call, where elongated yellow flags are thrown on the field.

I ordered one of 1587’s four signature drinks: the Alchemy, a vodka-based cocktail with dry curacao (an orange liqueur), mixed berry and cranberry juice, fresh lime juice and oolong tea.

It’s a nod toward Taylor Swift (she’s Kelce’s fiancé in case you’ve been under a rock these past several months) and the fun part is that it sparkles for a few seconds when the server lights a heat element on the glass stem. The drink ties into one of Swift’s song, which uses the word “alchemy” as a metaphor for a relationship that transforms over time. You can order other signature drinks (one for Mahomes, one for Kelce and one for Brittany Mahomes) or opt for a martini – that’s when a bartender will roll up with his martini bar for a custom drink. Shaken or stirred, it’s a sure bet that this martini will be a winner.

We began with a shared appetizer, tuna tartar served with crispy wontons. For my entrée, I chose the Wagyu filet with blackened truffle sauce. I almost didn’t need a knife, and this tender flavorful steak seemed to melt in my mouth. How can I go back to a regular steak ever again?

During the course of our meal, the jazz singer from the combo downstairs, made the rounds of the tables, entertaining with flair while not being obtrusive. Now, before you ask… No, I didn’t encounter the players, nor did I meet Ms. Swift, but I did bring home a trio of Kansas City friendship bracelets.

I made my way across the Kansas River to Kansas City, Kansas, meeting up with Ritz Dasgupta, Senior Manager of Integrated Marketing Communications at Visit Kansas City, Kansas. Our first stop was a newly opened venue in the city – Atlas9, an immersive entertainment attraction that is part art installation, part interactive experience and part live theater. Housed inside a converted 1990s movie theater, Atlas9 features a series of story-driven

environments where each room feels like a different world waiting to be explored. When I checked in, I was photographed and given a wristband to track my progress. As I moved through a series of wild and other-worldly spaces, I took on the role of a detective, looking for clues to solve a mystery. The themed spaces included a 1940s jazz club, a speakeasy where I ordered a lovely old-fashioned accented with popcorn, arcade-style rooms, a pizza parlor and a

240-seat auditorium. I encountered live entertainers throughout the experience, here a trumpet player, modern dancers there, and a complete ensemble on stage. The more I explored the venues at Atlas9, the more comfortable I became, as if I was inside the story instead of watching it from the outside. In fact, my own head shot, stylized and enhanced, thank you, occasionally appeared in some of the galleries. Oh, it is indeed amazing what AI can do these days!

Above and below, left: It’s nearly impossible to explain the Atlas9 experience, except to say it’s out-of-this-world fun for all ages. Photos courtesy of Visit Kansas City. Below, right: That’s me, or should I say my avatar, all part of the wild and weird world of Atlas9. Photo by Kris Grant.

Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que

By now, I had worked up quite an appetite and Ritz knew just the place to go: Joe’s Kansas City Bar-BQue. The restaurant started out in 1996 in a little gas station and has grown to be renowned worldwide. The late Anthony Bourdain’s review hangs in its lobby. He proclaimed Joe’s “the best barbecue in Kansas City, which makes it the best barbecue in the world.”

Joes’ Kansas City Bar-B-Que began as a competition before evolving into one of the city’s most iconic restaurants. Husband-and-wife chefs Jeff and Joy Stehney’s barbecue team – Slaughterhouse Five – earned national recognition and numerous championships before they opened in a modest unconventional location inside a former gas station. Today, lines out the door are the norm at Joe’s. There is still a preserved gas station structure, with non-operational pumps kept as a nod to its past. Over the years, Joe’s has retained a core of pitmasters, cooks and front-of-the-house staff, many of whom have been there for many years.

Joe’s is most famous for its slow-smoked meats – especially ribs (the best I’ve ever eaten!), brisket and prized burnt ends – all finished with a thick sweet-and-tangy tomato-based sauce. General manager Lane Dougherty showed me around, including the multiple offset pit smokers, built for high volume, low-and-slow cooking in the back of the house. Hardwood (typically oak, hickory or a blend) is burned in the firebox. Over many hours, the combination of wood smoke, time and rendered fat creates the signature bark, tenderness and flavor associated with Kansas City barbecue.

Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que, still on the site of the gas station where it debuted in 1996, was indeed the best barbecue I’ve yet tasted. It’s one reason why diners are happy to stand in long lines to order. Manager Lane Dougherty showed me the large smokers in the back of the house that produce the succulent meats, including the decadent pulled pork and ribs that I sampled. Photos by Kris Grant.

City Market: Rooted in trade, thriving in community

“The whole reason I own a coffee shop is to bring people together,” explains Nikole Ammer, whose City Market Coffee Roasters has been part of the City Market landscape for 30 years. After owning another coffee shop in Kansas City, Nikole joined the City Market Coffee Roasters 21 years ago and bought it four years later. “I live a block away, so I live and breathe this neighborhood,” she said.

City Market dates to 1857, making it one of the oldest continuously operating markets in the nation. Today it boasts a mix of about 30 permanent shops and restaurants and a robust weekend farmers market. Just one block from the Missouri River where food and supplies could be barged in, the market developed in what is now the River Market district. In the early days the market wasn’t just for produce, it was the central hub and trading post of frontier life hosting horse trading, political rallies, medicine shows and circuses. In the 1930s, new buildings were constructed as part of the New Deal-era development.

Many spots in the market still have a spiral staircase, a feature of the original and mid-20th century market buildings. Historically, many vendor stalls had retail space at street level, storage or work areas below and living quarters above. Spiral stairs provided a compact way to move about these levels. When the market was redeveloped in the 1980s, many staircases were retained because of

their historic character.

“I was thinking of moving away once, and I started crying,” said Nikole. “It’s like a giant family here; we all love each other; and take care of each other.”

So, instead of moving, Nikole added a second business at City Market, tearing down a 14-foot wall to connect what she calls her two “sister businesses,” opening Murmuration Eatery & Cocktail Bar in March 2025.

She had been eyeing and contemplating the space for over a decade. “I watched it go through several owners, most of whom only lasted a year. One guy had it seven years. Then Covid hit and another owner took it over but didn’t pay rent for three years. Finally, it was my turn, and it was the first time I

got to name my own business; the two coffee shops I had before came prenamed.”

“By naming it Murmuration Eatery, I was able to express myself more,” she said. “A murmuration is a gathering of birds. Typically in the morning or evening hours when they leave or settle in the trees, they travel in a tight formation together, which staves off attacks by hawks. They are stronger together. I’d watch this happen from my patio and it was magical and calming and enjoyable to watch. And it hit me; it’s all about the strength of community… that’s the right name.

“The only negative is that a murmuration is a gathering of starlings, an invasive species. So, I put my own spin on it and enlisted an artist to paint a mural with birds that are native to Missouri, but I had her include birds from other countries because we’re all different people.”

The weekend farmers market runs Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. (spring through fall; abbreviated days and hours in the winter), and hosts about 100 local growers and producers offering fresh produce, plants, flowers, meats, baked goods, specialty foods, crafts and more. “It’s a lively place with face-painting, bubbles and music,” says Nikole, “And you can eat just about any type of food you’d like – Ethiopian, Italian, Vietnamese, Indian, Brazilian and more.”

City Market has traditionally been the spot where the community comes together, whether it was horse-trading in the 1800s or the popular weekend Farmers Markets today, where vendors were just setting up on my Saturday morning visit.

FIFA World Cup 2026

All eyes will be on Kansas City this summer when the FIFA World Cup 2026 comes to the region. Specifically, six of the total 104 matches to be played worldwide will be played in Kansas City over 26 days, June 16 – July 11. Additionally, the national teams of Argentina, England, the Netherlands and Algeria will host training camps at four renowned venues throughout the area.

The World Cup is the biggest sporting event on the planet, with more than five billion viewers watching matches globally. The Kansas City bi-state region expects more than half a million visitors, many of them international.

Translation: If you’re a soccer fan and want to attend matches, make your reservations for both hotels and matches immediately and expect to pay top dollar; if you’re not a soccer fan, I recommend you plan your visit well before or after the event’s conclusion.

Kansas City is one of 11 cities in the United States that will host matches this year; it’s the first time in 30 years that play has been held in the U.S. All matches will be played at Arrowhead Stadium (also known as Kansas City Stadium in FIFA’s literature). It’s where the Kansas City Chiefs play, with seating for 76,000 fans. The city has established a transportation system specifically for the FIFA matches and several fan-zone events at the venue.

In Southern California, April marks the exciting start of early peach season, when the first fragrant, slightly firm fruits begin to show up in-store. These early-season peaches are not only sweet and refreshing, they’re also packed with vitamin C for immune support, vitamin A for healthy skin and eyes, and dietary fiber to aid digestion, all while being low in calories and virtually fat-free. Enjoy them fresh and sliced over yogurt or oatmeal, blended into smoothies, or layered into salads with greens, nuts, and cheese. In the kitchen, peaches shine when grilled to bring out their natural sugars, baked into crisps, cobblers, and pies, or simmered into jams, chutneys, and sauces that pair beautifully with chicken, pork, or fish. Whether eaten out of hand or cooked into a favorite recipe, earlyseason peaches bring a taste of spring’s sweetness to the table.
