MOVIES ARE BETTER ON THE BIG SCREEN! To truly embrace the immersed experience and joy of watching a film it must be shared with friends, fellow film lovers, and if possible the filmmaker. This incredible dynamic is what makes a film festival so magical! It is the shared experience of having a good laugh or cry together, and the unspoken bond with fellow audience members that comes from absorbing a powerful story...together.

Last year (2020) our festival theme was Frames of Mind.

The double entendré phrase took on more depth than we ever imagined. We carried this thematic concept into 2021 with our festival brand image of the “film reel” sunglasses.

To get into the spirit of the film festival one must adjust their frame of mind starting with vision, perception, and filters. These metaphorical glasses take us to new places, introduce us to cultures, people we may come to love or loathe, destinations that move us and carry us away. At times we may crash land into someone else’s reality and gain empathy or need to readjust our lenses. We transcend our everyday lives to journey into the world of cinematic visionaries.

With this in mind, it is my utmost honor and excitement to welcome you to the 2021 Coronado Island Film Festival! Over the next 4 days I invite you to immerse, engage and enjoy all that our festival team has worked so hard to curate just for you.

As I write this we’re six weeks out (“crunch time!”) from our annual “Kick-off Bash & Taste of the Festival,” featuring 17 favorite Coronado restaurants, a rollicking live band, and a fun on-screen preview of the amazing films we’ll watch together over the coming four days - films sent to us by filmmakers from the world over filmmakers at every level of their craft, from promising student to seasoned pro. We are so proud to bring them to you, because each one has a story to tell - a story that comes from the heart, passion, and determination of its maker, told with originality, courage, artistry, humor sometimes, and beauty. We look for films that thrill us, make us think, challenge us, educate us, remind us of who we are, get us talking, help us figure out life, and yep - even make us mad! And, softies that we are, we’re especially drawn to films that take the human spirit to a higher place. That’s the power of film, and there is just no other art form quite like it! We welcome you to CIFF 2021 - our 6th Annual - and we thank each one of you for being here. This is a true community effort - it really does take this entire village to bring this festival to you every year, and we are grateful beyond words. And for those of you new to us - filmmakers, visitors, families, even locals just now “discovering” us - a giant welcome to you! We look forward to seeing and meeting ALL of you - at the screenings, the parties, the panels, the Happy Hours, the Master Labs, and, especially, on our busy festival sidewalks, restaurants, hotels, unique shops, beach walks, and all that makes Coronado the unique festival destination it is.

On behalf of the Coronado City Council and our citizens, it gives me great pleasure to extend warm greetings to all attending the 6th annual Coronado Island Film Festival!

Welcome to filmmakers and film lovers from across the region, the nation, and indeed from around the world!

For the five days of our festival, I know you will enjoy the wide variety of films, panels, workshops, parties and special presentations that await you.

Coronado’s heritage with filmmaking goes back more than a century, with hundreds of movie stars, directors and industry leaders finding their way to Coronado, some to make movies, some to vacation, and some, a few to live.

You’ll see the names of several of these celebrities on our “Stars on the Avenue” that will be in place on our downtown sidewalks throughout the festival.

Film — and all the arts — are important facets of life in Coronado. It’s one of the reasons our city established the citizen-led Coronado Cultural Arts Commission in 2011, which began our film festival. The Commission’s leadership has filled our town with rich experiences in visual, performing, literary and public art. And, going back to 2010, our citizens’ love of the movies led the City to invest in our Village Theatre, which was renovated and revitalized in a successful public/private partnership, allowing the movie house, which first opened in 1947, to reopen after nearly a decade-long closure for the enjoyment of a new generation.

I congratulate everyone who made this year’s festival possible -we are excited to celebrate once again in person, and wish you all an exciting and very rewarding event. Enjoy the films!

FREDERICK LEE Conductor/Music Director Frederick Lee is a conductor and music educator with 39 years of public school and community ensemble experience. He has been the Conductor/Music Director of the Coronado Concert Band since 1998, performing a rich and distinctive repertoire for Coronado and San Diego communities. He is active as a festival adjudicator and clinician for the California Music Educators Association and the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association.

Recognized by CMEA as Outstanding Music Educator and Jazz Educator, he holds a Masters Degree in Conducting from SDSU. ELENA VIZUET Artistic Director, Ensemble Musica Vitale Elena Vizuet is an internationally performing artist and educator.

She has Master’s in Choral Conducting and Music Education and Bachelors Magna Cum Laude from Ural Conservatory, Russia.

She worked with San Diego Opera as a chorister and a soloist and as a Music Director of Opera for Kids by Kids program, as professor at Chelyabinsk Music College and Mesa Community College, as Director of Music Ministries for San Diego Catholic Diocese. The Coronado Island Film Festival falls over the Veterans Day holiday and to recognize our local veteran heroes, CIFF hosts a Salute to Veterans! This year we are honored to partner with the 45-piece Coronado Concert Band and Music Vitale for a moving musical tribute to our veterans. The Keynote guest speaker is Award winning Director & former Army Captain, Justin Roberts To complete this special engagement Mike Woiwode, founding member of the San Diego Military Advisory Council and CIFF Board member, will introduce a short film produced for the Coronado Chamber of Commerce by filmmaker and local business owner, Tony Perry.

Nancy Utley was appointed Chairman of Searchlight Pictures in 2018. She jointly managed all aspects of the company including production, acquisitions, marketing and distribution alongside fellow Chairman Stephen Gilula. Ms. Utley oversaw many of Searchlight’s most successful films to date, with a total of 122 Golden Globe® and 165 Oscar® nominations, including Best Picture winners Nomadland, The Shape of Water, 12 Years a Slave, Birdman, and Slumdog Millionaire.

Recent releases included The Personal History of David Copperfield and Nomadland, and the company had upcoming releases including Summer of Soul, The Night House, The French Dispatch, and Nightmare Alley. Ms. Utley holds a Master’s degree in Journalism from Northwestern University and has been inducted into the Medill School of Journalism Hall of Achievement.

ANN BLYTH

One of the leading ladies of the Golden Age of Hollywood, Ann Marie Blythe was born Annie Blythe on August 16, 1928 in Mt. Kisco, New York. She was one of the most renowned and multi-talented actresses of the 1940s and 1950s, noted for her stunning soprano voice as much as her acting skills. Starring opposite some of Hollywood’s leading talent of the day including Joan Crawford (Mildred Piece), Gregory Peck (The World in His Arms) and Paul Newman (The Helen Morgan Story).

A member of New York’s Children’s Opera Company, Ann made her Broadway debut in 1941 at age 13 as the daughter of the characters played

by Paul Lukas and Mady Christians in the classic Lillian Hellman WWII drama “Watch on the Rhine”. At the age of 16 she signed with Universal with her debut film, Chip Off the Old Block (1944), a swing-era teen musical starring Universal song-and-dance favorites Donald O’Connor and Peggy Ryan. She followed it with The Merry Monahans (1944) and Babes on Swing Street (1944). It wasn’t until Warner Bros. borrowed her to make selfsacrificing mother Joan Crawford’s life pure hell as the malicious, spiteful daughter Veda in the film classic Mildred Pierce (1945) that she really clicked with viewers and set up her dramatic career. With murder on her young character’s mind, Hollywood stood up and took notice of this fresh-faced talent, earning her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. Her first starring role was an inauspicious one opposite Sonny Tufts in Swell Guy (1946) and by 1950’s she took on a variety of roles as vehicles for her wide-ranging acting skills with films; Kismet (1955), The Student Prince (1954) and The King’s Thief (1955),The Buster Keaton Story (1957).

Blyth ended her film career on a high note, however, playing the tragic title role in the The Helen Morgan Story (1957) opposite a gorgeously smirking Paul Newman. Married in 1953 to Dr. James McNulty, Ann put film behind her to raise a family of five but continued to thrill audiences with her stunnning voice on the theatrical stage and many memorable television appearances including the spokeswoman Hostess Twinkies. Her legendary beauty, talent and charm has endured generations of movie lovers.

RICHARD DREYFUSS

Academy Award-Winning Actor and Social Activist

Richard Dreyfuss is an accomplished actor, outspoken social activist and champion for student engagement. He is both versatile and charismatic, one of Hollywood’s leading men who has appeared in nearly 180 films, including Mr. Holland’s Opus, American Graffiti and two of Steven Spielberg’s highest grossing films, Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Dreyfuss is a two-time Academy Award nominee, a four-time Golden Globe Award nominee and won both an Oscar for Best Actor and Golden Globe Award for The Goodbye Girl. In 2015 Dreyfuss received critical acclaim for his captivating performance as Bernie Madoff in the ABC miniseries, Madoff, costarring Blythe Danner who played Madoff’s wife, Ruth. Most recently, Dreyfuss has shown how versatile an actor he is by going back to his theatrical roots, playing renowned physicist Albert Einstein in the Mark St. Germain’s play, Relativity, directed by Rob Ruggiero. Few actors have been able to transition back to theater after such a successful Hollywood career.

Dreyfuss has a passion for political engagement which was inspired by his mother Geraldine who was a peace activist. It’s a core belief that he has championed his entire life and has a deep personal belief that America’s future will be shaped by how we educate the next generation in the democratic process. He is so passionate about teaching civics education to young people that he founded The Dreyfuss Civics Initiative; a non-profit organization that aims to revive the teaching of civics in American public education for the purpose of empowering future generations with the critical-thinking skills they need to fulfill the vast potential of American citizenship. He serves on several committees and boards, including the Committee for Education with the American Bar Association, the Board of the National Constitution Center where he has served for twelve years, the Council on Foreign Relations and a Senior Research Advisory Member of St. Anthony’s College, Oxford University and he’s 32nd level Freemason.

ARTISTRY IN FILMMAKING AWARD

MAYES RUBEO The Artistry in Filmmaking will be presented to Mayes Rubeo for costume design. Her work earned her an Oscar nomination for JoJo Rabbit, and most recently an Emmy nomination for Marvel’s WandaVision. Other works include Apocalypto (2006), Avatar (2009), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Warcraft:The Beginning (2016), World War Z (2013) and John Carter (2012). She was born in Mexico City and went on to train in Fashion and Costume at the Los Angeles Trade-Tech College (LATTC) and UCLA.

In a design career spanning two decades, she has collaborated with visionary directors such as Mel Gibson and Zhang Yimou, leading studios such as Legendary and Marvel and screen stars including Cate Blanchett, Ruth Negga, Brad Pitt and Andy Lau. Her early collaborations laid the foundations for a career that has demanded enormous versatility: Mayes began work as an Assistant Costume Designer and Costume Supervisor, gaining experience with Designers Shay Cunliffe, Erica Edell Phillips, Ellen Mirojnick and Enrico Sabbatini, the latter becoming her career mentor.

Mayes continues to bring her costumes into new territories, turning technological and technical challenges into creative opportunities. CINEMATOGRAPHY AWARD

GABRIEL BERISTAIN Gabriel Beristain was born on May 9, 1949 in Mexico City, into a theatrical dynasty. His father, Luis Beristain, was a renowned lead actor of stage and screen whose last film was Luis Buñuel’s Exterminating Angel. His interest in filmmaking began with his involvement in Mexico’s independent film scene. He known for his wide range as a cinematographer, from independent films to Hollywood blockbusters.

Following his many contributions as action unit DP for Marvel Studios, including Iron Man and Guardians of the Galaxy, his most recent work as Director of Photography in Black Widow has consolidated Gabriel as one of the leading artists in his craft. Other notable projects include the iconic Aerosmith videos, filmography of David Mamet, The Spanish Prisoner, and Guillermo Del Toro’s Blade 2, Blade Trinity, The Ring 2, and S.W.A.T, He helped to launch the successful careers of David Ayer with Street Kings, and a strong creative partnership in There Be Dragons by British film legend: Roland Joffe.

Additional photography for Marvel projects includes the 3 installments of Iron Man, Thor 2, the Dark World, Thor Ragnarok and also the successful Guardians of the Galaxy.

He returned to CBS to shoot the pilot and the first and second season of the remake of MacGyver, the full first season of Just Beyond for Fox Disney and currently just finished the pilot for Monarch for Fox, starring Susan Sarandon.

Having settled in England, the Berlin Film Festival honored him in 1987 with a Special Silver Bear for outstanding single achievement in cinematography and Visual Style for Derek Jarman’s Caravaggio. His work in Aria (1987), for legendary director Ken Russell, earned him an invitation into the British Society of Cinematographers in 1990 and, a decade later, was invited into the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers.

After shooting K-2 in Canada and Pakistan he moved to the U. S. to work in cult classics like Blood In, Blood Out and Dolores Claiborne. Cinematography credits hence amount to over 50 motion pictures and a hundred commercials and music videos.

LIVING THROUGH IT (Surviving Suicide) WED, NOV 10 / 11:00AM / SCREENING + EXPERT PANEL PARISH HALL THEATER / SACRED HEART A very special screening and panel in partnership with filmmaker Daniel E. Kennedy, and SAFE HARBOR. The short film Living Through It, Surviving Suicide features survivors of the Coronado Bridge. The film highlights the story of Bertha Loaiza, whose mother jumped off the bridge holding her when she was only 3 years old. She survived the jump, although her mother did not. Her story is one of loss, hope and inspiration. With the rise in suicide this is not an easy subject. A panel of experts will discuss strategies and prevention that can literally save someone’s life.

This screening is open to the community and badges are not required.

Bertha was three years old, when her mother jumped from the San Diego-Coronado Bridge with Bertha in her arms. Bertha survived, but her mother did not. Bertha is a board member of Survivors of Suicide Loss (SOSL), where she facilitates a support group. Bertha is currently working on a degree in psychology.

Julie is an associate marriage and family therapist and serves as Safe Harbor’s clinical counselor and community education specialist. She specializes in working with youth and families and is a certified positive discipline parent educator.

Her goal is to empower clients to know their goodness and strengths while also providing a safe place to explore and grow. She works hard to not only reach those who come into Safe Harbor’s office but everyone in the Coronado community through social media, articles, and speaking engagements.

Jennifer Lewis, Ph.D., LCSW, Jennifer is a 2021 Fulbright Specialist Award recipient, Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Southern California Suzanne Dworak Peck School of Social Work, and Co-Director in the USC Institute for Addiction Sciences and Center for Excellence in Teaching Fellow. She is the owner of Mosaic Psychotherapy, LLC, in Coronado, CA. Dr. Lewis also co-authored the book Organizing for Suicide Prevention: a case study at the Golden Gate Bridge.

Michele Madden Director of Support and Prevention Programs for Survivors of Suicide Loss (SOSL) In 2004, she lost her brother Jamie to suicide and, shortly after that, lost her cousin Chip. Immediately, she started attending a SOSL group, and within two years, began facilitating that group. Simultaneously, she started a faith-based suicide loss group, which she continues to facilitate. Michele’s passion for working in Suicide Prevention and Loss Support led her to receive extensive training to develop valuable insight and skills. She is a trained Chaplain for Suicide Prevention and Support and a QPR (Question, Persuade & Refer) Gatekeeper trainer.

For the 30th Anniversary re-release, the 16 mm film was restored and remastered in 2K. The inspiring story of Clayton “Peg Leg” Bates, tap dancer extraordinaire and entrepreneurial resort owner, has never been more relevant. Overcoming the double challenge of a physical disability and Jim Crow era racism, Bates rose to become an international jazz dance star of stage and television.

He parlayed his celebrity to found the Peg Leg Bates Resort, an oasis for African Americans in the Catskill Mountains. Peg Leg Bates narrates his extraordinary saga of Black empowerment.

JAMES HUBBELL AWARD Coronado Island Film Festival is deeply honored to once again present a reproduction of the column, “The Hubbell”, to our honorees and award winners. Designed by James Hubbell and inspired by Coronado’s iconic Hubbell fountain, including its carved marble column, a jewel in Coronado’s public art collection.

The best art has the power, if not to move mountains, then certainly to move the human spirit to a higher place. The work of internationally revered sculptor, artist, and architect James Hubbell is like that. Today, at 89, his vision and creativity thrive, seemingly unfettered, at the 40-acre Santa Ysabel compound, Ilan Lael (Hebrew for “Tree from God”) where Hubbell lives and works with Anne Hubbell, his wife of 61 years.

There’s nothing at all flamboyant about Jim Hubbell. He’s soft-spoken, thoughtful, and has a familiar humble hesitation but his art clearly communicates the enormous depth and power of the man: what he feels, what he knows and, more importantly, what he sees. An artist whose work is perfectly suited for a cinematic artist.

HONORARY JURY PRESIDENT LEONARD MALTIN LEONARD MALTIN is one of the world’s most respected film critics and historians. He is best known for his widely used reference work Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide and its companion volume Leonard Maltin’s Classic Movie Guide, now in its third edition, as well as his 30-year run on television’s Entertainment Tonight. He served two terms as President of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association,and was appointed by the Librarian of Congress to sit on the Board of Directors of the National Film Preservation Foundation. He also teaches the most popular class at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Perhaps the pinnacle of his career was his appearance in a nowclassic episode of South Park. (Or was it Carmela consulting his Movie Guide on an episode of The Sopranos?) He is the co-host of the popular podcast Maltin on Movies with his daughter, Jessie Maltin.

Jackson and Bernie Mac. Claudia is president of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and a critic on NPR’s Film Week. She also teaches a college class on Diversity in the Media and is in demand as a moderator and speaker on film-related panels. In addition, Claudia has a film consulting business specializing in cultural consulting. Previously, she was USA Today’s film critic for 15 years and was a staff writer at the Los Angeles Times for 11 years. Claudia is Program Director of the Mendocino Film Festival. She was recently featured in the Los Angeles Times as one of the 14 film critics making media more inclusive and is the winner of the Roger Ebert Award for Excellence in Film Criticism from the African-American Critics Association.

Ann Walker helped launch the inaugural Mendocino Film Festival in 2006, and has played a major role in building and guiding the organization over the past 15 years, serving as Executive Director, Vice President of Operations, and Senior Programmer. Her passion for documentary film propelled her into programming and she now serves as programmer, curator, and film scout for the Mendocino Film Festival, as well as being an Advisor to the Board. She has attended film festivals from Park City to Amsterdam in pursuit of the perfect line-up.

From 2016 to 2019, Kira Wojack co-curated the acclaimed Mendocino Film Festival Short Films Program with Ann Walker, scouted films at major festivals, and worked with Ann and Program Director Claudia Puig to select the features line-up. As a publicist, she has worked with tech startups, filmmakers and awards ceremonies, and lifestyle brands. Two films she represented as a publicist won Jury Awards at Cinequest in March 2019.

She was also an Associate Producer on Denervation, Joshua Dawson’s awardwinning short film.

Jon Anderson Chair, Professor of Documentary Studies and Production, School of Journalism and Communications at the University of Oregon Jon started his 40 year career in the motion picture industry in his homeland of Australia at Fox Columbia in 1980. He subsequently worked in the UK and the US for, at various times, Sony Pictures, Paramount, Universal, Dreamworks Animation and Disney before landing his latest role as Senior VP Global Marketing for Amblin Partners.

Ricardo Del Rio has worked in the film industry since 1983, starting in big-budget films such as Dune, Conan – The Destroyer, and Honey…I Shrunk the Kids. Since then, he has specialized in international feature films as a Unit Production Manager, Line Producer, Co-Producer, and Executive Producer. He has co-produced/line produced many of the most successful international feature films shot in Mexico and also managed/supervised the Latin American Units of films and through his production services company Art In Motion – Mexico. His credits also include Once Upon a Time in Mexico and Borderland as 1st Assistant Director and Fate of the Furious for Universal Studios in Havana, Cuba, followed

by Transformers V – The Last Knight for Paramount Pictures.

Peter came from New Zealand to British Columbia, Canada in 1978 on a Rotary Graduate Scholarship to study Maritime law at the UBC Law School, building on his experience as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New Zealand.

HIs world travels were interrupted by a Ms. Nancy Scholey (now McRae), and he settled in the States to pursue a career in oil and gas financing, then master-planned community development, and in 1992 founded Quattro Environmental, Inc., a soil erosion-control and native plant revegetation company. A lifelong passion for filmmaking, and a special relationship with a founding member of the CIFF, precipitated Peter’s invitation to become a juror for the Emerald Award, an honor he values and is proud to take part in.

PROGRAMMERS JEREMY AGULIERA-GAUDETTE FEATURE/DOCUMENTARY PROGRAMS Originally from Maine, Jeremy Aguilera-Gaudette has called Los Angeles home for 17 years. After managing several movie theatres all over the Los Angeles area, Jeremy left exhibition to work for a non-profit film arts organization, Film Independent. There, he currently works for the International Programs department, producing events, workshops, and serving as hospitality manager for all inbound activities. Along with the One People International Film Festival, Jeremy is also a programmer for The Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival and Outfest Los Angeles.

SULTANKAZY PIRZHAN SENIOR FEATURE/INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS ​​Sultankazy Pirzhan, originally from Kyrgyzstan, started his career in 2011 as a line producer and staff writer of Comedy Competition Show Asia Mix. In 2015, Sultan joined the Asian World Film Festival (AWFF) and served as the Artistic Director for three years. He also administered the execution of partnership agreements with the Golden Globes (HFPA), Variety, HBO, Sony, CJ Entertainment, Snow Leopard Trust, and more. Through his production company SP Film Production, Sultan has produced multiple short films, feature films, and consulted on several international projects.

ROBERT JOHN TORRES SHORTS PROGRAMS Robert John Torres is a film festival programmer based in Los Angeles, CA. He has previously worked for the Tribeca Film Festival, Palm Springs ShortFest, OUTFEST, Nashville Film Festival, Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, and more.
