Cornwall workers memorial vandalized CORNWALL, Ontario – Sometime over the Thanksgiving long weekend, the Cornwall workers memorial in Lamoureux Park was defaced with green and purple spray paint. Cornwall Police Service (CPS) could not
confirm at time of publication if they have any open investigation in the matter, but as of Tuesday afternoon the City of Cornwall said that it is in the process of organizing the cleanup of the monument, which they hope will be completed as soon as possible. CON’T ON PG. 5

CORNWALL, Ontario – Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) candidate was confirmed as the new MP for Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry. By 11 p.m. Duncan had secured over 16,000 votes, more than double of his nearest rival. The Conservative party’s fortunes were different nationwide however. By 10:20 p.m. on election night, the incumbent Liberal Party of
Canada under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was well on his way to a minority government. Incumbent Conservative MP Guy Lauzon introduced his protege and former campaign manager to a welcoming audience at the campaign party at the Ramada Inn. “This is my seventh visit to this room on election night,” Lauzon said. “The first was to celebrate a defeat. The other five were as a victor. Many of you have been with me through the ups and downs and now you have put your support behind Eric Duncan and I thank you for that.” Eric was paraded in by bagpipes along side his family. “What started out with a click of a mouse grew into a movement here in SD&G,” he said. “I’m very proud of our campaign and how our team treated the other teams and candidates.” “I am proud to look Guy in the eyes tonight and say we did it,” Duncan continued. Duncan said that he was proud of his volunteers and was represented across the province. “I could not have done this without the support of my mom, my dad Ed and my sister Jill,” said Duncan. “With the title of MP coming to the end of my name, I want you to know that the title that I am most proud of is that of your son and brother.” Duncan said his first priority was to setup a campaign office. He said he would be keeping the office in Cornwall, with the same staff, and the same commitment to public service that his predecessor had. Many inductees, who’s successes have brought them away from Cornwall, returned home for their induction to the hall of fame. “What started as a breakfast and then later a dinner quickly became the evening we have now,” said Gardiner. The inductees were Louise-Andrée Baril, Michèle Chauvin-Bourdon, Noëlla Cotnam, Focus Art Association, Janet Irwin, Nicole Labelle, Roger Levac, Veronica Maguire, Duncan McIntosh, James Fagan Tait, Rick Forrester, and Brad Bonaparte. Focus Art Association, an organization dedicated to nurturing visual arts for 15 years in
Cornwall, is the first organization to be inducted into the hall of fame. The workers memorial was originally erected to commemorate the deaths of 15 workers who were killed with the Limestone Railway Swing Bridge collapsed in 1898. The Cornwall and District Labour Council holds an annual memorial at the monument every April to remember those workers who die on the job every year.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Roger Lafontaine’s father, Maurice, had a life long love for all things that rode on tracks. Whether they be powered by steam or diesel, Maurice found them fascinating. Born in 1932 in North Bay. At the age of five or six-years-old, Maurice saw his first train there

and fell in love. “He’d say, when you stand beside a locomotive, that the wheel was taller than he was,” Roger explained. “The strength and power of a locomotive, he loved it.” When Maurice moved to Cornwall in 1959, he began his career as a teacher, and also began what would become his vast train collection. At its height, Maurice’s collection included roughly 7,000 model train pieces, model steam engines, train whistles, carriages, lamps, railroad spikes and conductor’s hats. Roger said that his father would grow his collection by going to many shows, and by meeting railroad professionals. Maurice would frequently walk with his brother along the deck and down by the Cornwall train station. Conductors would stop and give him their hats, or a railroad spike. Maurice even was given a few lamps from caboose cars once those were discontinued. Roger also remembers his father taking a family trip out to Vancouver, BC, in 1972 and making 75 stops along the way to look at or collect trains. Maurice even created a model set of track that was 30 ft. long and 20 ft. wide. That model commemorated his three favourite cities, Montreal, North Bay and Cornwall. Roger explained that the reason his father chose Montreal was because of it’s importance to the Grand Trunk Railroad. “This was one of the most important railways and helped Canada build the west by sending supplies through Toronto,” he said. Roger said that his father was always looking

Before he passed, Maurice decided that he would sell and give away much of his collection, so that it could be enjoyed by others. Roger explained that some of the set was given to family members, some was sold at train shows and 10 train sets were given away to local families to enjoy. A part of Maurice’s enduring legacy is the Moccasin Railroad Club, which he helped to found in Cornwall in 1977. The goal of the club is to promote the love of
trains and exchange collections and hard to find pieces. Roger explained that the Moccasin Railroad club was a source of pride for his father. “The club would meet every Wednesday,” Roger said. “You knew never to bother dad for anything on Wednesdays because Wednesdays were precious to him.” In memory of Maurice, the Moccasin Railroad Club has a trophy named in his honour given to those who carry on his passion for railroads and trains.

Young artist form “Whimsical Memories” at Cailuan Gallery Another focus of the workshops is to teach participants that they can make art with a variety of different mediums, according to Provost. “One of our big aims here is to highlight that art doesn’t require a clear canvas like the ones we use here,” said Prevost. “We want children to try at home and do papier-mâché, or to paint over an old canvas, or to really use what ever they can to express themselves.”
In the future, Prevost said she hopes that there will eventually be an art show in Cornwall featuring the work of these young artist. “I would personally love to work more towards something like that since there is so much talent that we don’t always get to uncover in our young people,” said Prevost.

CORNWALL, Ontario – To find where the Whimsical Memories workshop is happening within Cailuan Gallery, you need to only follow the sound of laughter as this round’s second session was underway on Oct. 19. Eager young artists fill the workshops led by Mandy Prevost, an educational-assistantturned-artist that uses her skills in both art and working with children to help foster their interest in art. “I love working with children and seeing how they become more and more comfortable with themselves and their workout as we work together,” said Prevost. A great difference can be seen in the participant’s personality, according to Prevost, who said after watching normally shy children come in, they leave with a lot more confidence in their art and their desire to learn and create more. “In session one, I’ll see some kids that aren‘t particularly open or vocally excited about what we’re doing. But by session 10, everyone is much more out of their shell and all those barriers have been broken down,” said Provost.

Monday was a rollercoaster of a day I think for all federal parties. The Conservatives made gains, but at a cost. The Liberals clung on to government. The Greens tripled their seats in Parliament, and the NDP took a beating thanks to a resurging separatist Bloq Party. Here at home, we saw in Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry a result that many I think predicted, Eric Duncan, the protégé, taking on the mantle of his mentor, Guy Lauzon. It was a good night for Eric. He won a strong majority and brought in a larger plurality of the vote than Guy did in 2015. I’ve said this publicly before, that no matter your political stripe, Eric will be a good MP. He comes off as a kind and compassionate person, and I think that he will do a lot for individual constituents in SD&SG. Whether he is able to bring real change and improvement to the riding is another matter, especially this term, not being in government. Eric is a rookie MP, and while he has been a politician his entire adult life, he has never been an MP, and we’ll see how his education in this new job progresses.
On the national level there were a few surprises. The Conservatives made gains. I think they did as well as they were expected to do, but that was not the attitude at the local Conservative watch party. Many were happy that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has not won another majority, but there was also disappointment that their party did not form government. Will Andrew Sheer stay on as leader? For awhile, yes. No one will be drawing the knives this soon after the election, but before the end of the year, I expect to see public discussions within the party to account for the 2019 election “loss”. The Conservatives also lost Lisa Raitt, long time Conservative MP for Milton. Her defeat came as a surprise. Just days before the election she was being cast as the female, progressive proxy for Andrew Sheer on interviews on all major networks, so her loss is a surprise, and the party will feel it. I saw her as a future leader someday. Also, the Bloq did very well, at the expense of the NDP. The only reason I think we don’t have a second Liberal majority government is because of the resurgent Bloq. The dissatisfaction with the other national parties I think, lead Quebecers to look inward. Even though they are fourth place however, expect to see the NDP exert some
influence on Liberal policy. The Liberals will have to be looking over their shoulder every time they table legislation to ensure that the NDP is on side. Finishing off on local matters, it was good to see the clean campaign that all parties ran, something Duncan said he was proud of in his victory speech, going as far as to say that he made friends on the campaign trail. Also, a special shout out to Kelsey Catherine Schmitz, who ran a great

Dear Editor, Creativity is an abundant source and for the sake of this writing, so to is money. We will take the construction of a well built house as the vechicle or working metaphor of this conversation. In order to construct a house you need to start with the foundation. (and please note, I know jack about building home but I am not simple on the facts of life). This foundation and all subsequent levels of the structure all of have to have “perfect” 90 degree angles and all other relevant angles. Now, we have a square and level structure.
The guts of the building have to be interlaced and intertwined within the structure that allows for it be maximized as a livable space. Now despite all of the mathematical calculations, there is an admiration that we all ail from when we see a really well done house that has become a beautiful home. A finished home is simply a blank pallette for the mind to concieve how every nook and crany will contribute to the semblance of a home. From the placement of furniture to the color schemes, right down to the bedsheets. But it is in that word “home” that the hard numbers that can produce all the lines of home begin to fray away into creativity of what a home feels like.
With all the money available and all the creativity available any person can turn a house into a home. The “turning it into” is the art part. That is why you can get interior paint of any color in the spectrum. That is why you can match your shoes to your car or your phone case to your favorite team. The interior decorator provides the palette and the mood for every space in that home as specific to the individual to draw out a sense of comfort. Funny how so many intangibles intersect to create a feeling. So one can agree that the service rendered by both the interior decorator and the home builder are equally important in the
scenario and both should be paid their respective wages but paid all the same. Every artist is a service rendered and therefore should be paid a respective wage and therefore, paid all the same. Art, in all of it forms, provides a feeling. If there is a request for a services that faciltiates a feeling and it was rendered through a service, that artist should be paid. Plucky teller turned tables on would-be robber Claude McIntosh Mac’s Musings

On an October, 1937 afternoon Austin Gadbois parked his taxi in front of the Canadian Bank of Commerce on the east side of Pitt Street just south of Second Street. His passenger, a stranger in town, said he needed to get some money from the bank and he’d be back in a couple of minutes. A few minutes later the passenger came out of the bank on the run with a pistol-packing bank teller on his tail. He had passed teller James Miller a note saying, “This is a hold up. I have a gun in my coat pocket. Give me all your money.” The man said he had a gun in his jacket pocket. Miller decided to call his bluff. Instead of emptying his cash drawer, the teller reached for a handgun kept under the counter. Seeing the armed bank employee, the would-be robber made a mad dash for the door. In those days banks kept a loaded revolver on hand for one of those “just in case” moments. Miller was in hot pursuit. Outside the bank, he fired a warning shot over the fleeing man’s head as astonished downtown shoppers looked on. Special Constable Arnold Edwards, on foot patrol in the downtown, joined the foot chase. Miller fired another shot, this time at the man who headed down the alley between St. John’s Presbyterian Church and the Stormont Electric office. Officer Edwards fired two shots at the man. Since the man stumbled after one of the shots, Edwards figured he had
hit the suspect in the shoulder. But that didn’t stop him. He may not have dodge the bullet but he managed to dodge the law, never to be seen again. Within 10 minutes dozens of police officers - city, township, provincial and RCMP - were searching for the suspect. The trail, as they say, went cold. The investigation eventually hit the proverbial brick wall. The suspect became known only as the “Man in the Brown Windbreaker”. Police doubted if the man had a handgun. Taxi driver Gadbois told police the man wanted to be driven to Montreal and the two agreed on $25. He then took the man to the liquor store where he purchased a bottle of whisky. He then asked to be driven to the bank. Meanwhile, cabbie Gadbois was out a $1 fare. He didn’t even get to keep the quart of whisky the man left behind on the front seat of the cab. The police seized it for evidence. Teller Miller was praised by bank officials for putting the bank’s assets ahead of his personal safety. And while police said it might have been a foolish thing for young Miller, a native of Scotland, to do, they spoke highly of his “courage act.” As for Miller, “I don’t think I would do it again. I wasn’t sure he didn’t have a gun in his jacket pocket.” The Standard-Freeholder reported that if the man had pulled off the robbery, he would have made history. Believe it or not, a Cornwall bank had never been robbed. *********** For the second time in two weeks, locallyowned Palace Amusements Co. announced plans for a new movie theatre in Cornwall, this one on Montreal Road property purchased
from William Waldroff. The 700-seat theatre (to be called The Roxy and now The Port) would cost $60,000. The company owned and operated the 1,250-seat Capitol on Second Street West and 750-seat Palace on the west side of Pitt between Second and Third streets. It also planned to build another theatre across the street from the Palace on the former Fursey Garage property. It would have 1,000 seats. It would replace the old Palace. ALSO THIS WEEK CIRCA 1937 City police were investigating the theft of gold bridges and caps - from the offices of four Cornwall dentists (Dr. R. S. Robertson, Dr. M. O. Good, Dr. J. B. Rouleau, Dr. W. S. Sullivan). Police called it a “professional job.” ... This guy qualified for the dumb-crook-of-the-month award. After breaking into the Morrisburg Feed and Produce Co. office, he turned the handle of the safe, thinking he was opening it. The safe was unlocked, so he locked it and left empty-handed. ... Magistrate P. C. Bergeron sentenced a Hull man to three years in jail for robbing Osnabruck Township farmer James Hawn of $113. Stormont MP Lionel Chevrier appeared as a character witness for the accused. Chevrier, a lawyer, told the court that Ivan Lambert was the son of a former Hull mayor and had grown up in a good family and had a good education. The judged ruled the Crown failed to prove money found on Lambert when arrested was stolen from Hawn. ... The provincial government announced a reduction in the cost of motor vehicle permits. Cost of a new car permit was reduced to $7 from $12. ... F. B. Brownridge was re-elected MPP for Stormont. Voter turnout was 71%, down from the federal election earlier in the year which had an 82% turnout. ... St. Francis de Sales Church was official blessed on Oct. 10. The
first mass was celebrated on Feb. 28, 1937. ... Oscar Perron of Mille Roches was robbed of $14 while walking along Highway 2 about one miles west of Cornwall (Cumberland Street). A cyclist approached Perron from behind around 11 p.m. and struck him on the back of the head with a sandbag before stealing his money. ... Cornwall Trades and Labour Council received its charter. Arthur Laverty was installed as its first president. ... A Halloween dance was held at Ed Hubble’s Community Hall, 308 York St. ... Louis Jacobs, 19, and John Leaf, 17, of St. Regis, drowned when their boat overturned in the St. Lawrence River near Little Crab Island. A third man, Levi Thomas, 29, survived by clinging to the side of the boat. ... When he appeared before Mag. P. C. Bergeron on vagrancy and illegal liquor possession charges, an Alexandria man asked for a favour: He wanted a jail sentence. The man explained he didn’t have a job or place to live. He received two months. ... Rivermead Dairy, 407 Water St., was offering homogenized pasteurized milk to its customers. MUNICIPAL ORGANICS DIVERSION The City of Cornwall is studying the feasibility of a municipal organics diversion program.
An organics diversion program can have many different levels of service, from a curbside green bin program to a backyard composter. Each solution provides an avenue for diverting organic waste (for instance, kitchen scraps) from the garbage, which would extend the life of the landfill and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

CORNWALL, Ontario – At the monthly meeting of the Council of the United Counties of SD&G, councillors heard that the average value of farm property in the region had jumped by 91 per cent. The Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) explained in a presentation to Council that this jump in property value assessment also meant that local farmers were facing a higher tax burden this year. “The problem is not just that farm property values have increased by 91 per cent. The problem is that farm property values have increased by 91 per cent while other properties have remained relatively flat,” said Ben Le Fort, Senior Policy Analyst with the OFA. The value of the average residential property in SD&G has only gone up by 11 per cent in the past four years. Property values are assessed by the
Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) and municipalities must set their tax rates based on those values. The OFA asked for a lower tax rate from the United Counties for the 2020 year to give them a year to catch up. South Stormont Mayor and United Counties Councillor Bryan McGillis pointed out that reducing the ratio on farmers would mean that slack would have to be picked up by another part of the tax base, primarily residences. South Dundas Mayor and United Counties Councillor Steven Byvelds said that the tax rate could be adjusted if the Counties can make due with less. “Other classes pay, only before we set the budget. If we did it before, we only take dollars out of our account. We have less money to spend, but other classes aren’t impacted,” he said. The presentation was received by council and referred for information purposes at budget time.

GOING FORWARD Smith said that going forward issues that he felt that South Stormont Council should be watching is infrastructure investment and asset management. He used the St. Andrews West Raisin Region Centre as an example. “Look at the heritage building in St. Andrews,” he said. “We’ve learned that we should have been putting money into it. We didn’t do that and we let it get to where it is.” A contractor’s estimate last spring stated that the building needed $600,000 in renovations. Lastly, Smith said that he was proud that in their first budget, the new South Stormont Council did not raise taxes by even a nickel.

South Glengarry first responders receive commendation PROVIDED BY THE TOWNSHIP OF SOUTH GLENGARRY LANCASTER, Ontario – On Oct. 9, 2019, members from the SDG, OPP, RCMP, SDG Paramedics and the South Glengarry Fire Services staff were recognized at the Ontario Provincial Police East Region Headquarters Awards Ceremony in Smith Falls. These first responders received OPP Commissioner’s Commendation Awards for their assistance in 2017 at an aircraft crash that occurred in a wetland on the east side of County Rd. 27 on Summerstown Rd. On Sept. 25, 2017, at 10:00 p.m., the South Glengarry Fire Service was requested to attend a downed aircraft with the assistance of Cornwall SDG Paramedics and members of the Ontario Provincial Police. The aircraft was found in a wetland and forested area near Airport Road and County Road 27. The plane had a single occupant with
significant injuries due to the crash. Extrication services were needed due to the heavy damage to the plane. There were considerable hazards and difficulties with the rescue since the plane came to rest in approximately half a metre of water and wetland surrounded by forest. The plane’s fuel tanks had ruptured leaving aviation fuel throughout the area. Due to the excellent teamwork between Fire Service members, the OPP and Paramedics, the pilot was quickly assessed, extricated, packaged and removed from the site to be transported to the Cornwall Community Hospital. MAXVILLE, Ontario – Maxville’s water tower the “Tartan Tank” is in the running to be the 2019 Tnemec Tank of the Year. The contest runs from Oct. 7 to Oct. 18 with members of the public given the opportunity to vote for their favourite water tank. Habitat for Humanity home now move-in ready
CPS MAKE ARREST IN “GRANDPARENT SCAM”

Habitat for Humanity requires a family to volunteer in the construction of their home in lieu of a traditional down payment, Shane Lauzon worked an additional 200 hours beyond the requirements. The Lauzon’s will also pay their interest-free mortgage to Habitat for Humanity, with the money being used to fund future projects. Shane often worked on the construction before he went in to work, according to Leigh Taggart, executive director for Habitat for Humanity Cornwall & the Counties. This home is also armed with a security
alarm, to give the Lauzon’s additional peace of mind, according to Taggart. “Every time it seemed like they were getting back on their feet, something else would happen that would set them back again, so they were really a perfect family for Habitat for Humanity to partner with,” said Taggart. For the first time in Cornwall, Habitat for Humanity will be building a semidetached home as their next project for the Leaf and Ortiz families. “We’re very excited for this project, especially since we will be able to help more people more quickly,” said Taggart.
CORNWALL, Ontario – As a result of an ongoing investigation by members of the Cornwall Police Service (CPS) Criminal Investigation Division, Street Crime Unit, and Community Patrol Division, Peter Pitsolantis, 43, of Sainte-Marthe-Sur-le-Lac, Quebec was arrested on Oct. 18 and charged with three counts of fraud over $5,000. It is alleged on three occasions throughout the month of October, the man contacted a 94-year-old victim and fraudulently claimed that the victim’s grandchild was in need of money for various reasons. On two occasions, Pitsolantis received large sums of money exceeding $5,000. On the third occasion, police were able to locate the man and intervene prior to the victim providing him with an additional quantity of cash. During the investigation, the man was taken into custody, charged accordingly and released to appear in court on Nov. 28, 2019.

CORNWALL, Ontario – A 19-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on Oct. 21, 2019 and charged with two counts of breach of recognizance for contacting his girlfriend. It is alleged on Oct. 5 and Oct. 21, the man was in the company of his girlfriend, despite his conditions, and police were contacted to investigate. On Oct. 21, he was taken into custody, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing. His name was not released as it would identify the victim in the matter.

JOHN MACGILLIS, SPECIAL TO SEAWAY NEWS CORNWALL, Ontario – After thousands of hours of volunteer work, donations, and a community coming together to support one another, the Lauzon family is ready to move into their Habitat for Humanity-built-home on Oct. 19. The Lauzon family, parents Ashley and Shane and there three sons, Kyler, Austin, and Hunter, couldn’t hide their excitement as they stepped into their new home at 1108 Churchill St. “We are just thrilled and can’t repay the community enough,” said Ashley. “Our old home had a lot of issues, there was no space and we were always on top of each other, it had a lot of flaws because of how old it had been,” said Ashley Lauzon. Health, structural, and safety issues made life more trying for their family, according to Ashley Lauzon. In March 2018, Shane Lauzon learned that he had a non-cancerous tumour in his throat, increasing the difficulty in their lives by adding medical troubles, according to Ashley Lauzon. “When you’re in a situation where one parent is sick, it is super difficult to ever get ahead, it always feels like you’re trying to get back up again.” Another issue the Lauzon’s had faced was security with intruders being more common than they ought to be, according to Ashley Lauzon. “We had a lot of break-ins, our old house was at the very back of a road and Shane often works nights, so we really did have a scary security problem at our old house.” After completing the 500 hours, the amount

CORNWALL, Ontario – After haggling over a few of the finer points of the shape and nature of the Climate Change Committee, Cornwall City Council approved the committee’s creation and their core mandate at their meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 15. The central mandate of the committee will be to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce overall contributions of Cornwall towards global warming and to help Cornwall cope with the extreme weather created by climate change. Cornwall City Councillor Carilyne Hébert, who originally moved for the creation of the committee back in March, was pleased that the terms of reference were approved. “I’m glad we will have this committee up and running as soon as possible,” she said. Hébert went on to explain that the committee could help the city focus their fight against climate change, including possibly declaring a climate change crisis as other municipalities in North America have done. Under the terms of reference as amended by Cornwall City Council, the Climate Change Committee will be composed of two council members and three members of the public. Additionally, members of City of Cornwall administration and representatives from the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, Transition Cornwall +, The St. Lawrence River Institute and the Raisin Region Conservation Authority. There was discussion about whether or not the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne the (MCA) should be invited to send a representative to the committee as well. “Are members from Akwesasne taxpayers in the City of Cornwall?” asked Councillor Eric Bergeron. “I don’t understand how this amendment exists.” While the councillor’s question was not answered, members of the MCA in most cases do not pay property taxes in the City of Cornwall. Councillor Hébert pointed out however that Cornwall did share environmental resources with the MCA, notably the St. Lawrence River and it was also brought up that the MCA and Cornwall were close partners on other issues, such as the administration of Cornwall’s harbour lands. Ultimately however, Council voted against inviting the MCA to send a representative to sit on the committee. Next steps for the Climate Change Committee will be finding the councillors and community members who will be able to serve as representatives on the committee and electing a chairperson.

Cornwall BMX Club competes for Gold Cup PROVIDED BY CORNWALL BMX CLUB CORNWALL, Ontario – – It’s been an incredible season for 14 year old Novice BMX racer Stylin’ Rylan Adams. Fresh off of podium finishes at the Ontario Provincial Championship, Adams and fellow Cornwall BMX Club members Carter Jackson (14) and Sam “The Skunk” Drouin (13) travelled to Long Island, NY to compete at the DK Gold Cup Championship Finals last weekend. Adams, was off to a good start with a strong second place finish at the Friday PreRace and another second place at the Saturday Final. Unfortunately, his luck ran out on Sunday. “I was sitting in first, but then I slipped and crashed hard in the second moto” explained Adams. “I didn’t make the main on Sunday but I finished the season with a #2 Gold Cup plate.” Adams’ teammate Carter Jackson also had a solid performance and earned a fifth place ranking in the 14 Intermediate class. Jackson qualified for his main events on all three days of racing but a sixth place finish on Friday and seventh place on Saturday weren’t enough for him
to secure a championship plate despite a solid Novice Class racer second place podium finish on Sunday. CORNWALL, Ontario – After a rainy start, the 2019 Pan American Bass Championships are underway in Cornwall. The tournament officially began on Oct. 18 in the morning, with 26 teams competing. Canada was represented by eight teams, eight were also from the USA, seven from Mexico and four from Akwesasne. Canadian bass fishing legend Bob Izumi was out on the water on Friday morning. “It is another day at the office, and I love being at the office,” Izumi said when asked how his morning was going. Izumi and his teammate had caught 15 fish by 10 a.m. Friday. Under tournament rules, each team could only have five fish on their boat at a time. When a sixth fish was reeled in, the competitors had to toss their smallest one back.
The sky was cloudy on Friday with a forecasted high of 10 degrees Celsius, but according to The Weather Network it felt more like five or seven degrees. The tournament will see two outings on Friday, the first running from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and the second running from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. At the end of each session, each team will have the chance to weigh up to five fish, with the results being live streamed on the Competitive Sports Fishing League (CSFL) Facebook page at 11:45 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. respectively. “This historic event in Cornwall is the starting point for the Canadian International Sportfishing Association and is an exciting challenge for all the anglers from the Americas,” reads a statement from the CFSL.

NATION SUD, Ontario - Au cours des prochaines semaines, la Conservation de la Nation Sud (CNS) mettra fin à ses activités d’entretien dans les parcs, en enlevant les quais de ses propriétés riveraines et en fermant des sentiers dans certaines de ses 14 aires de conservation à fréquentation diurne en préparation pour hiver. Bien que les grandes chaleurs de l’été soient terminées, les résidents peuvent toujours aller profiter des aires de conservation de la CNS qui demeurent ouvertes et entretenues en hiver : W.E. Burton et J. Henry Tweed dans Russell, la Forêt Two Creeks à Morrisburg, Robert Graham dans Glen Stewart et la Forêt Warwick à Berwick. « Cette année, nous entretiendrons plus de 30 kilomètres de sentiers pour les plaisirs de l’hiver », a indiqué Phil Duncan, adjoint aux propriétés de la CNS. « Nos aires de conservation sont accessibles gratuitement et sont
idéales pour la raquette, le ski de fond, le géocachette ou la randonnée pédestre. » La CNS a également conclu des ententes avec des partenaires municipaux pour entretenir d’autres sentiers et parcs, notamment le parc Nokomis à Limoges et le sentier récréatif de Russell. « Nous travaillons avec nos 16 municipalités membres pour nous assurer que nos espaces naturels sont sécuritaires, accessibles et qu’ils peuvent offrir d’excellentes possibilités de loisirs de plein air aux résidents. » a ajouté M. Duncan. La CNS possède et gère plus de 12 000 acres dévolus à des espaces naturels publics répartis sur son territoire de 4 384 km2 dans l’Est ontarien, ce qui comprend son réseau de 14 aires à utilisation diurne. Les aires de conservation sont toutes accessibles gratuitement. Jusqu’à présent, plus de 70 000 visiteurs ont profité des aires de conservation de la CNS en 2019.

Wise investors stash any surplus funds in portfolios that promise more than the rate of inflation. However, my topic for this week is the rows of little structures that pop up like mushrooms in the suburban and rural areas around our communities. They’re not chicken coops, dairy barns or piggeries. They’re the new

growth industry: storage. Have you every considered why there are so many these days? Today’s affluent lifestyle seems to dictate that we must have toys for our two major seasons. Summer requires that we have a kayak, canoe, paddleboard, water skis, motorboat or cabin cruiser, camping tent, lawn mower and barbecue. In autumn we prepare for winter by stashing all of those toys in some sort of storage facility. To make room for them, we have to haul out the snow tires, snowmobile, snowshoes, alpine skis, cross country skis and snowblower. Those toys aren’t the only reason why the landscape is dotted with so many storage facilities. When the old folks downsize to their retirement apartment or long-term care facility, their dining room set, freezer, family

Almost half of marriages now end in divorce. The survivors quite often find another life companion to share their next decades with. Two households of belongings won’t fit into a down-sized home, one more suitable for a couple of empty nesters. A temporary storage place has to be found, until there’s a mutual agreement as to what goes and what is to be kept. Children grow up and eventually leave home. It takes a while for parents to dispose of their playpens, car seats, tricycles, bicycles and sports equipment. “We’ll keep the stuff for the grandchildren.” Despite grandparents’ hopes and dreams, quite often there are no
grandchildren, and those who do exist live on the West Coast. Besides, those playpens and car seats will no longer meet today’s stringent safety standards. When I gaze at those orderly rows and rows of well-built, secure and well-maintained storage buildings, I compare them with the squalid refugee camps that exist along the Mediterranean and in some of the Middle East and African countries, I realize the chasm that separates us from those shacks of cardboard, canvas and scraps of wood and tin. Other than what they were able to carry on their backs, they have nothing to store. In the Scripture according to Matthew (6: 19-21), we are offered some wise advice about storing our treasures.

The candidates were great, but the electorate sometimes was not, whether it be slashing tires, putting blackface on signs or running over signs with ATVs, no candidate deserves that.
