CORNWALL, Ontario – Over 2,000 people were expected at the fifth annual Seedy Saturday event, hosted by Transition Cornwall + Food Action Group and coordinated by Allspice Solutions.

Kat Rendek, Owner of Allspice Solutions and Coordinator with Transition Cornwall +, said that about 500 people arrived to the event within the first hour. Over 40 booths were set up throughout the Benson Centre, showcasing a plethora of items and initiatives from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

“We have tried to catch all of our really cool, active community partners,” said Rendek about all of the booths. “We are seeing the community take to this event, love it, and it is just growing year after year.”

Rendek explained that the event hosted everything from seed vendors, vendors selling honey and garden supplies, a free seed swap table, to non-profits connected to food systems or natural ecosystems. In breakout rooms, about six workshops were offered throughout the event, spanning topics like building compost boxes and constructing edible perennial landscapes.

With a number of hands-on activities for children available, each received an activity passport which could be redeemed at the Kinsmen Children Seed Market booth.

“We want to inspire children from a young age,” said Rendek. “It’s important to connect to our food sources at all ages and all stages of life; connecting in and understanding that all of our

CORNWALL, Ontario – This year, 2019, marks 15 years since the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation (CCHF) launched it’s fundraising campaign to build the new hospital. Over 10 years ago, the first facilities of the new hospital, the birthing suites, the Critical Care Unit and the Emergency room, opened. The fundraising continues however, as the CCHF strives to constantly bring better tools and services to the Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH).

Every year, the CCHF tries to raise $1.2 million for the hospital. “Every year there is a laundry list of things to replace and we are always trying to help them out,” said Todd Rozon, Chair of the CCHF Board. “We’re not here to pay salaries.

We’re here to replace equipment and we’re here to buy better services for the community.”

Through the work of the CCHF, the hospital added a chemo unit two years ago, and has also added an MRI machine and were instrumental in the funding of the new Centre for Addictions and Mental Health (CAMH).

“What we’re trying to do as an organization is make sure we have the people on the ground that we need and the equipment that they need,” said Amy Gillespie, Executive Director of CCHF. With their annual Radiothon just around the corner on April 4, the CCHF is currently working to buy a new mammography machine for the hospital.

The CCH performs around 7,000 mammograms a year. A mammogram is one of the leading ways that breast cancer is detected.

food comes from seeds. Sometimes we get away from that (mindset)…seeds are very often forgotten. We have an insecure seed supply globally. So, we want to remind people it’s really important to value seeds, to invest more energy and time into saving seeds, and sharing and growing.”

Jordan Bouchard of Bird and Bee, an Ottawa based business which sells vegetable flower seeds, said he was impressed with the growth of the event throughout the past five years.

“It’s a really great event. We have been here each year that Cornwall has had Seedy Saturday.

Every year we are so impressed…the organizers are doing a great job, and there’s so much more for families to do here than other seedy events.”

Rendek extended a thank you to all sponsors and partners of the event, especially the City of Cornwall, Kinsmen Club of Cornwall and Social Development Council.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, if breast cancer is detected early, by Stage 2 or less, the five year survival rate is 93 per cent and above.

The cost of a new mammography machine is $400,000.

“Goals like these cannot be reached in one shot,” said Gillespie. “We’re inviting the community to join us on our fundraising journey.”

Gillespie wanted to remind the public that there is the option to contribute to the CCHF automatically on the monthly basis at an amount that suits the donor’s budget.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The annual Spring Home & Leisure Show is fast approaching.

Taking place at the Cornwall Civic Complex from Friday, April 5 to Sunday, April 7, this year’s show will have dozens of vendors, and a whole lot of prizes to get attendees ready for the spring renovation season.

“The Show is a plus for consumers throughout the Cornwall region,” said Cornwall Chamber of Commerce Executive Manager, Lezlie Strasser.

“Under one roof, consumers will find over 100 exhibitors with a great selection of the latest products and services, focused on home and leisure activities for the warm summer season.

The event is under a month away and we want to get the word out so people start planning for a visit.”

The Cornwall Chamber of Commerce is presenting the show in partnership with St. Lawrence Pools. Some of the fantastic prizes to be given away this year include a new Trager Grill and gift pack.

CORNWALL, Ontario – On March 1, Emily Vallance, 17, of Cornwall proved that hard work and dedication can show great reward.

After her first time competing in a women’s kickboxing class division championship, Vallance returned home from Niagara Falls with another national title. Her victory was determined by judges, who favoured her performance over that of her 31-year-old opponent, who has a successful record of 15-4-1 in professional fights.

“It was really awesome to have the chance to fight her,” said Vallance, noting both she and her opponent were southpaws, which can be rare in fights. “It helped me to develop as a fighter.”

Acclaiming prestigious titles is not new for the École secondaire publique L’Héritage student as she has attained two national titles and two

world championship wins in Ireland and Spain when competing in the junior division.

“I was nervous (before the fight) but nerves are normal, and you just have to learn how to handle them so you don’t get in your head,” said Vallance. “Whenever you get into the ring, all the training comes in…it’s all muscle memory. It was actually a very fun fight.”

Vallance, who started training in kickboxing at the age of 11, has also trained in MMA and Jiu Jitsu. Through learning different styles, she feels that her grappling and cardio has improved, as well as her ability to learn how others fight.

Dedicated to constant improvement, Vallance trains five nights a week and does additional strength training at QuestPTS. Currently, Vallance trains under Rolland Bissonnette at Apeiron MMA. “It is my biggest passion,” said Vallance about kickboxing. “It’s very fun, intense and

competitive… it helps with confidence for sure, and also just kind of learning how to talk with people.”

Vallance said she owes much of her success to her family.

“My family is probably my number one supporters,” she said. “They probably love it just as much as I do. They make sure I’m motivated and they are able to get me to these competitions.”

Going forward, Vallance is hoping to attend St. Lawrence College to study Business and continue training locally. She is looking forward to possibly attending this year’s World Kickboxing Championship with her friend Noah White, who attained silver at the national championship. One day, Vallance hopes to fight in the Glory Kickboxing and possibly transition into MMA. “I’m working on stay focused for training… my main goal right now is to compete in kickboxing,” she said.

Cornwall Classics win gold Provided by Cornwall Classics CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall Classics, sponsored by Classic Care Pharmacy, won the 55+ Gold medal at the Ontario 55+ Senior Winter Games which was held in Huntsville, Ontario. The Classics competed in a 6 team round robin series. They lost their first game 3-0 to a solid London team but they went on to win their next 4 games beating Bramptom 3-0, Grey Bruce 4-1, Haliburton 3-0 and then North Lanark 7-0 to capture the Gold medal.

By winning the Gold Medal in Huntsville, the Classics have now qualified to play in the Canadian Senior Championships, which will be held in Kamloops, BC in August of 2020.

Cornwall Minor Baseball begins developmental clinics CORNWALL, Ontario – About 35 baseball players between the ages of 12 and 16 met for their second development clinic with Cornwall Minor Baseball on Sunday, March 17.

“This is two purpose,” said Cornwall Royals Minor Baseball coach, Richard Fournier. “The developmental clinics are to get kids away from their computers and workout (in the off season), and I can work on the (upcoming) team.”

Players of all athletic caliber are invited to work on their skills throughout an eight session developmental clinic series. At a total cost of $80 per player, individuals can take part in three batting units, two pitching units and work on their defensive skills during each session.

With this year’s competitive season fast approaching, Fournier is looking to enlist about eight 15 to 16-year-old boys to compete in the

Cornwall Royals Showcase League. Last year, the team finished just shy of qualifying for Canadian Nationals.

“If you could have seen at the end of the season two years ago, to the end of the season last year, we went and played this tournament and there were no errors,” said Fournier. “It’s just fun to see them play baseball like ball players, not like weekend warriors.”

Fournier admitted that the schedule can be gruelling, with two practices a week and sometimes four games throughout each weekend, but acknowledges that scouts do look at athletes within the showcase league. “I just want kids to know it doesn’t end in house league. There is competitive baseball in Cornwall…I’d love for a few local kids to get a college education (from this), playing ball,” said Fournier.

On Monday night, thinc design presented their proposals for the new Waterfront Plan to the Planning Action Committee (PAC).

PAC heard a range of over 70 recommendations that thinc is proposing for the waterfront from Guindon Park in the west, all the way to the Nav Centre in the east.

At this point, these are just recommendations, no one has made any final decision on what the future of our waterfront will look like.

Even when they do, I don’t think most of these recommendations will come to life within the next five years.

That being said, before the end of 2019, Council will approve a new waterfront plan in some form and it is my opinion that the waterfront should stay welcoming to the public as possible and as open as possible.

Many of the recommendations from thinc do follow this theme of preserving and promoting public space. This includes their advocation for a new entrance to Lamoureux Park on Water St., a stargazing area in Guindon Park and even the recommendations for dog parks along the waterfront are all good steps I think in developing that space for all the citizens of Cornwall while promoting tourism.

Even some potentially private ventures, like a waterfront spa near the canal, are a good idea. A waterfront spa would not be overly intrusive, and it is a business that would likely be welcoming and potentially used by the majority of the population. On top of that, I believe that a waterfront spa would make a lot of money and could be a strong tourist attraction for the city, but that’s another opinion column on its own for another time.

Areas where I do have concern are the lands that thinc has earmarked as “Future development parcel”. The implication I get from this designation is that the development is private. As I mentioned in reference to the waterfront spa, some private development can enhance the waterfront space for everyone, others do not.

Restaurants and shops will grow our economy while keeping our waterfront open to everyone, condo developments will not.

Another area of concern for me is the proposed change to the Legion Ball Park that the park be transitioned into a “Passive waterfront Park Space”. I strongly believe that any attempt to move those ball diamonds will be met with stiff resistance from Cornwall Minor Baseball, and from the Cornwall Legion. The fact that just this past summer, Cornwall hosted the senior softball provincial tournament in that park, is just one example of its continued relevance and importance. It would benefit the city the most if Cornwall Council and administration worked co-operatively with Cornwall Minor Baseball and the Legion to develop the park as partners in a way that satisfies the majority of stakeholders.

Response: Dog Parks Dear Editor, So happy to see your artical re public dogparks. We recently moved from Montreal and Cornwall is soo far behind the times on this topic.

In Montreal just about every community has its dog park. They are freindly social places for people to meet. With loneliness being a greater and greater issue, especially among our seniors, this would be a healthy friendly offering. I do not understand, we build so many playgrounds,

ballparks, icerinks etc... but no dogparks ?

Almost shameful for a city that wants to be senior and citizen friendly not only ignor mans best friend but ban him from soo many areas. At the same time dogs are being increasingly used as therapy dogs in airports, hospitals, elderly homes, and in many of our homes, adding a calming, loving, and nonjudgmental accepting influence.

The city flag Dear Editor, It is not time to get with the times?

Our city keeps trying to re-invent itself. God only knows when the city flag was first introduced and flying proudly for so many years.

As many of us recall, with building of the new dam we lost any seaway shipping through Cornwall.

Cornwall at one time was proud to call itself the “FRIENDLY SEAWAY CITY” I believe this ended in the late 60’s when the seaway system was diverted to the south side of Cornwall Island.

Over the years Cornwall has since had different slogans “WORK, LIVE, PLAY” for one

And now we have a great new logo as displayed on the water tower behind Blessed Sacrament church on Tollgate Road that is proudly standing and telling those on the 401 that yes our city is in its footsteps for them to exit at the McConnell exit.

And now, we have a great slogan “A CITY WITH A WORLD OF POSSIBILITIES” of which we know economic development use at all times when promoting our city.

So therefore city council, start looking at the things staring at you. Think about changing the looks of the city flag.

In all, he has been associated with the club, starting out as a caddy, for 77 years, which must be some kind of record. “All the guys I (started out) played with are all gone,” said the 89-yearold Mercier who was the first French-Canadian “allowed” to join the club. Charles “Tiny” Herman planned to drive to Cornwall from Ottawa on Nov. 30, 1966 but when he checked a federal government aviation map that showed a 2,400 landing strip at the “Cornwall Municipal Airport” three miles east of Bonville, he decided to make the trip in his single-engine Beachcraft Bonanza.

The former Ottawa Rough Riders lineman had arranged to picked up items from Chalet Glass in Cornwall for the 1967 Brier in Ottawa.

Herman was co-chair of the national curling championship.

Unknown to Herman, when he lifted off at Rockland Airport, was that the runway and airport didn’t exist.

On the ground to meet Herman were two members of the Cornwall Curling Club who were there to drive Herman to the city. Herman had told them he had found an airstrip east of Bonville where he could land. When city businessman John Garey, who knew Herman through curling, and another member of the curling club arrived at the site they were surprised to find the runway didn’t exist.

They watched as Herman, an inexperienced pilot, made several wide circles over the area where the airstrip was said to exist. All he could see was a cow pasture and what looked like an attempt to build an airstrip. Realizing he was burning up fuel, he gave up and turned back for Ottawa.

Near Metcalfe the plane’s engine cut out and the pilot attempted an emergency landing in a muddy farmer’s field. The airport at Uplands received a Mayday call from Herman seconds before the crash. Herman, 60, was killed. His male passenger was badly injured.

Ambitious plans to construct a municipal airport on the 350-acre Bonville site with two landing strips, one capable of handling commercial flights had fallen through years earlier, not once but twice.

First plans in the mid-1950s called for the airport to be constructed by the federal government with the city and township footing the bill to operate the facility. But when a deal fell through the Bonville site idea was abandoned.

However, in 1959 a Toronto businessman proposed a private airport on the site that would include commercial flights. But when the proposal crashed and burned, the city opted for an airport at Summerstown.

It was determined that Herman’s plane ran out of fuel on the return flight.

Not explained was why an official federal government document showed an airport that didn’t exist.

spring Cleaning for Home Fire safety South Stormont Fire and Rescue would like to encourage you to include home fire safety items on your spring cleaning checklist.

• Check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. You should test your alarms every month by pressing the TEST button, and replace the batteries at least once a year. If your alarm is more than 10 years old, replace it.

• In the laundry room, clean out your dryer filter, vents, and hoses of any lint and debris.

Keeping the lint filters clean after each load will reduce the chance of a dryer fire.

• Check your home for cracked, frayed, or overloaded extension cords or surge protectors. Make sure appliances are plugged into wall outlets, instead of extension cords. Remove any cords that run under rugs, or can be pinched by doors and furniture.

These can spark and cause a fire.

• Ensure you have an Emergency Survival Kit in case of incidents such as power outages and flooding. A list of items that should be included in an Emergency Survival Kit can be found on our website.

• Practice your home escape plan. Discuss the escape routes with every member of your household. Agree on a meeting place outside your home where every member of the household will gather to wait for the fire department.

• Check to make sure that your address numbers are still up, not faded, and clearly visible from the street. Replace outdoor light bulbs so address numbers are illuminated at night.

LONG SAULT, Ontario – Irish tunes could be heard coming from South Stormont Township on Saturday, March 16 during the Fish & Fry St. Patrick’s Day Dance.

Event organizer David Smith said he was hoping to see a crowd just shy of 100 people sporting their green, Celtic attire and dancing shoes.

“I love doing this sort of stuff. I was in the bar business for a long time…and I’ve been fundraising since I moved here in 1985…I miss that, so now I have all the tools. You have got to stay busy,” said Smith, who was happy to host another dinner and dance in the community.

Live music was anticipated by a few members of the band Kilts, Riffs and Spurs throughout the evening. Attendees could take part in dinner and a dance for $20, or just a night of dancing for $10.

Part of the proceeds from the evening will be donated to the municipality’s Meals on Wheels.

“We donate the money to the South Stormont Senior Support Centre for Meals on Wheels,” said Smith. “It’s local Meals on Wheels…I always knew Meals on Wheels existed, but I never really knew much about them until I went there and watched the trays going out of there, and they really need support…Meals on Wheels, they’re not just about delivering food…they can go to the house

CORNWALL, Ontario – OMNI Health Care, which owns and operates Woodland Villa in Long Sault announced earlier this month it’s plans for a 32,800 sq. ft. expansion. As it is now, Woodland Villa is currently 40,000 sq. ft.

This expansion is a part of a provincial announcement last spring that the long-term care home would be receiving funding to add 17 additional beds to their site. This would bring Woodland Villa to 128 beds total.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Over one hundred community members attended Jamia Masjid Al-Aqsa Mosque at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 17 to join in Solidarity Prayers, honouring the victims involved in the Christchurch attack in New Zealand.

“The fatal act of terrorism claimed (50) innocent human beings and left 50 worshipers injured with bullet shots. We have gathered here to show solidarity and express support with the families of the victims and the Muslim community all over the world,” said Arsalan Qureshi.

Si c’est le cas, la Conservation de la Nation Sud (CNS) rappelle aux résidents de son territoire de 4 384 km2 dans l’Est de l’Ontario de communiquer avec son équipe s’occupant des propriétés et des approbations pour obtenir de plus amples renseignements avant de procéder. « Dans le cas de zones susceptibles d’être exposées aux risques naturels, nous travaillons avec les résidents pour nous assurer que leurs projets d’aménagement sont respectueux de l’environnement et qu’ils sont construits en toute sécurité », explique John Mesman, responsable des communications de la CNS. « Cela implique d’aider les résidents dans le processus d’approbation lorsqu’un permis est requis. » Le personnel de la CNS est disponible pour des consultations à son siège social à Finch ou dans les bureaux municipaux locaux, ce qui permet aux résidents de se rencontrer et de dis-

cuter plus facilement des projets et des approbations de permis.

De plus, pour ce qui est des installations septiques, les responsables de la CNS effectuent des inspections et délivrent des permis au nom de 13 des municipalités membres de l’Office de protection de la nature; cela comprend toutes les régions des comtés unis de Prescott et Russell, la ville de Cornwall, et de Stormont, Dundas et Glengarry, à l’exception de Glengarry Nord et Sud. En 2018, plus de 400 permis de fosses septiques ont été délivrés par la CNS aux résidents locaux.

Les concepteurs, installateurs et entrepreneurs de fosses septiques sont invités à assister à la réunion annuelle de la CNS au sujet des installations septiques le 18 avril 2019, au Complexe J.R. Brisson à Casselman, de 9 h à 11 h. Cette réunion portera sur les procédures générales d’inspection, les demandes de permis et donnera l’occasion aux participants de partager leur expertise et leurs expériences.

Le personnel de la CNS est également disponible pour répondre à des questions sur une variété de sujets, tels que les projets de plantation d’arbres, l’aménagement des terrains boisés, les possibilités récréatives, les projets d’intendance des propriétaires fonciers et les 14 aires de conservation à utilisation diurne.

CORNWALL (Ontario) - Selon le service de police de Cornwall (CPS), le nombre de collisions à Cornwall a augmenté de 6,5% en 2018 par rapport à l’année précédente.

Il y a eu 1 373 collisions en 2018 et 1 289 en 2017. Le nombre de blessures résultant de ces collisions a toutefois diminué, 2018 ayant enregistré 334 blessures résultant de collisions, contre 359 l’année précédente.

La plupart de ces accidents sont survenus par temps clair, 1 119 et étaient également des collisions impliquant un seul véhicule ou des collisions avec des véhicules en stationnement et inoccupés.

Il y a eu 12 incidents liés à la drogue ou à l’alcool et 18 accidents avec des piétons.

How often you need to have x-rays also depends on your oral health. A healthy adult who has not had cavities or other problems for a couple of years probably won’t need x-rays at every appointment. If your dental situation is less stable and your dentist is monitoring your progress, you may require more frequent x-rays.

If you are not sure why a particular x-ray is being taken, ask your dentist. Remember that dental x-rays deliver very little radiation; they are a vital tool for your dentist to ensure that small problems don’t develop into bigger ones.
