CORNWALL, Ontario - There was magic in the air at the fifth annual Princess Ball organized by the Kinettes on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019. The event was the biggest and most successful edition yet with 300 tickets sold, the event was sold out in early December. The princess guests were treated to complimentary valet parking provided by the Kinsmen, a royal knight opened the doors for them, Town Crier Wes Libbey announced their entrance, and they were greeted by a court of characters such as the Beast and Belle.

Each princess was given a magic wand and a little bit of fairy dust. When all the princesses gathered together in the ball room, they waved their wands to reveal Cinderella’s magic carriage.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall-based company Food Cycle Science has been awarded $225,000 by the Federal Economic Development Agency to help them upscale and compete on a

global level.

Food Cycle Science produces the Food Cycler, a kitchen appliance composter that promises to reduce kitchen waste by 90 percent by turning it into nutrient-rich fertilizer.

The federal investment will allow Food Cycle Science to create three new jobs and expand into

new markets. Bradely Crepeau, CEO of Food Cycle Science said that this investment will allow his company to adopt a more global mindset.

“Through the commitment of angel investors and the support of the Government of Canada, Food Cycle Science has been able to commit to a global mindset in its growth strategy for the

BONVILLE, Ontario - At the meeting of the Stromont-Dundas-SouthGlengarry (SDSG) Conservative Party Riding Association meeting at the Lion’s Club in Bonville on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, long time Conservative MP Guy Lauzon announced that he would be retiring and not running for re-election in October.

“After a great deal of thought and discussion, Frances and I decided that I won’t be the Conservative candidate in October 2019,” Lauzon said to the riding members. “In October, it will be 15 years and four months that I have had the honour, the privelege to serve as your Member of Parliament and I’ve given it all I’ve had, but you know what, after 15 years and four months, it starts to wear down a little bit.”

Lauzon said that he will be spending more time with his wife Frances. In the summer of 2015, just after that election was announced Frances was diagnosed with non-hodgkins Lymphoma and Luazon admitted that he was unable to give 110 percent to that campaign.

Frances was cured of her Lymphoma, but Lauzon says that there are continuing health issues.

Les membres du Centre CharlesÉmile-Claude ainsi que les non-membres peuvent profiter du plein air lors des 2 activités extérieures, et ce, gratuitement. Volunteers must give their names before March 6 since there will be one-session training on that date. This winter, the Center has organized 2 new outdoor activities, free of charge, for its members and the non-members. They are held weekly every Monday and Friday for snowshoeing at Gray’s Creek and cross-country skiing at Guindon Park.

This past Saturday, long time MP Conservative Guy Lauzon announced that he would not stand for re-election this October.

When he retires, Lauzon will have served as MP for 15 years and four months. At 75-yearsold, Guy said that he would be spending more time with his wife Frances.

I think the future holds something interesting for the riding of Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. This riding I believe is solidly blue, and Guy’s own electoral history backs that up. In the 2015 election, an election that Guy himself admitted he did not put his whole heart into due to his wife’s cancer diagnosis, still returned a plurality over 50 percent in terms of support for the Conservatives.

This strong local support for the Conservative Party means that our local Conservative Riding Association will essentially be picking our next MP for us when they do select their new nominee for the 2019 election.

Guy said that he believed that there were many great young candidates in the riding, but declined to name any of them.

One name that does come to mind is Eric Duncan. Duncan had served as Mayor of North Dundas for the past eight years before stepping down this past election. This past summer he served as CFO and campaign chair for Jim McDonell’s re-election run in the provincial election and before that he had been a longtime volunteer in the Conservative Riding Association both provincially and federally.

Duncan’s experience and his profile both within and outside of the United Counties of SD&G will make him an attractive candidate.

That being said, it is unclear if he is even interested in being MP. As stated above, Duncan has recently chosen to take a step back from the political limelight. On his Twitter account, Duncan calls himself a “Recovering politician”.

He did however post earlier this week, that he had an announcement to make in the near future, so watch out for that.

Duncan is also by far, not the only possible Conservative candidate. There are younger people in Cornwall and the Counties who might have a fair shake at being the next Conservative MP for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. It makes for an exciting time politically and there is a feeling that anything can happen in the air.

That being said, one thing I believe will hap- Bernier’s new People’s Party and if the Liberal pen is that Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry Party can field an even stronger candidate of will remain a Conservative riding. The their own.

Healthy eating is the best strategy to keep fit

How often have you heard you are what you eat?

This saying makes a lot of sense.

Diseases like diabetes, obesity, heart problems and cancer are taking a big toll on Canadians.

After years of debate and consultations,

Ottawa has completely overhauled Canada’s Food Guide.

If we all follow the new guide, we will be healthy.

And at the same time Canada will save millions of dollars in health care costs.

Even before my recent health problems, we tried our best to eat healthy.

Our diet includes grains, lentils, fruits and vegetables, some red meat but mostly fish and chicken.

Federal government’s new strategy encourages Canadians to eat healthier foods.

The revamped Canadian Food Guide makes a lot of sense.

We all have to encourage our children to give up junk and processed foods.

Make sure you read the labels for foods that are high in salt, sugar or saturated fat.

Health Canada has been encouraging us to eat more plant based foods and reduce meat and dairy products.

I never thought Ottawa would ever put a lot of emphasis on this.

The new guide, revealed by Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor, has a clear message.

So it was with Guy Lauzon who last Friday made the unexpected, at least for the unwashed, announcement that he was walking away from what he called the “greatest, most rewarding job I have ever had.”

It has been a long ride for the Conservative MP who upset Liberal incumbent Bob Kilger in the 2004 federal election, after finishing second in 2000 as the Alliance candidate. Actually, upset might not be correct. The writing was on the wall in 2000 when Lauzon and the Progressive Conservative candidate, a student, combined polled 673 more votes than the Liberal incumbent. The Alliance/Tory marriage paved the way for Lauzon’s 2004 victory and four more that qualified as landslide triumphs.

Friday’s announcement was a surprise because Lauzon was looking forward to carrying the Conservative banner in the Oct. 21 federal election campaign. He was eyeing a sixth consecutive victory which would have cleared the way to become the longest-serving MP to represent a riding that included Cornwall and Stormont.

At 74, Lauzon is in great physical condition and still has the energy of the bunny in the battery commercials. He thrives on hard work. Nobody

outworked him in an election campaign.

The late U.S. House Speaker Thomas “Tip” O’Neill liked to caution his colleagues that “All politics is local.” Translated: Voters back home are concerned most about issues that affect their personal lives and home community. Lauzon, the quintessential grassroots politician, understood this and stayed close to his home base, which had a lot to do with his success.

With Lauzon bowing out, the search for a successor begins. The riding association doesn’t have to look far. Top of the list is former North Dundas mayor Eric Duncan. The nomination is his for the asking.

THIS AND THAT Massena Memorial Hospital closed the books on 2018 with a whopping $5.6 million loss, the result of a big drop in people using the hospital. On this side of the border, it is the reverse: Fewer patients and admissions are good for the bottom line. It comes down to this: The U.S. system encourages people to use the hospital and its services (making money), while our system tries to keep people from using the system (saving money). .. Hey, what ever happened to the January thaw, you know, back before global warming when you could count on three or four days of balmy temperatures? ... Just in case you were wondering, the Canadian Football League draft held in Mexico earlier this month had nothing to do with Corona on tap.

HERE AND THERE In an Alberta court room last week a defence lawyer argued that her client should be released on bail because the charges he faced were not “terribly serious.” Really! The dozen charges included possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, obstructing a police officer and failure to appear in court.

Previous charges include assaulting a police officer while carrying a weapon and failing to comply with sentence conditions. ... Four snow/freezing rain days in a row for schools. The Great Ice Storm excluded, this has to be a record. Okay, let’s hear it, “When I was a kid, we walked two miles to school through 10-foot snow drifts.”

SPORTS STUFF Alex MacDougall and Rene Desrosiers were one-two in the round-robin of Bob Trueman Trophy senior men’s play with the same result in the 12-team playoff at Cornwall Curling Centre. MacDougall edged Desrosiers in the playoff round. Supporting cast for the MacDougall rink were third Mario Lemire, second Ken Munroe and lead Steve Leger.

Members of the Desrosiers rink were third Glen Pilon, second Paul Desnoyers and lead Kevin Cooper.

TRIVIA This former world heavyweight boxing champion was the referee for a professional wrestling card at Cornwall Community Arena on May 3, 1949 - 1) Gene Tunney, 2) Joe Louis, 3) Max Baer, 4) Jack Dempsey, 5) Jack Sharkey.

TRIVIA ANSWER In 1942 the department of munitions and supply constructed a chemical plant - known as Cornwall Chemicals - on 318 acres of farm land (in the Dover Heights area) the federal government had expropriated. At the time, production was cloaked by a thick viel of secrecy. A fence was built around the site, which had 50 buildings. Armed guards patrolled the site.

All of this for good reason. One of the chemicals being produced and stored was deadly mustard gas.

REAR VIEW MIRROR - 1959 - The year started with three major fires that stretched the resources of the Cornwall Fire Department. An

overnight fire destroyed the Page Craft Boat factory on Marlborough Street (between Sixth and Seventh streets).

On Jan. 26 cab driver Russ Hance was credited with saving the lives of two upstairs residents at 1010 Pitt St. Hance spotted flames and smoke coming out of the second storey as he drove by at 3 a.m.. He banged on the door to wake up two sleeping residents who jumped from the secondstorey. Both were taken to hospital with burns.

A few days later the Jacob Building at Pitt and Second streets was destroyed by fire and two adjacent buildings housing the Metropolitan Store, Woolworths and Fullerton’s had heavy smoke and water damage. Fire Chief Lucien Carriere credited two 60-foot fire walls with saving the entire block. Destroyed in the fire were an apartment, Dumont watch repair, L. P. Stidwill offices, Harper Beauty Salon and the Oddfellow Hall. Exploding oil tanks hampered fire fighters.

ALSO THIS WEEK IN 1959 - A former city police constable was remanded in custody after being found guilty on two counts of break, entry and theft. Evidence said Raymond Powell, 30, a two-year veteran, broke into a service station while on night patrol and stole several tires. In a strange twist, one of the character witnesses called by defence attorney Michael Salhany was Police Chief Allan Clarke who told the court that Powell was a good officer who was well liked by his colleagues. A week later Powell was sentenced to two months in jail.

CORNWALL, Ontario - suite... d’une histoire à raconter du mercredi 9 janvier 2019 Un bon ami me disait que le grand bonheur c’est une série de petits bonheurs juxtaposés.

Mes années à Sainte-Croix sont porteuses d’innombrables petits bonheurs. Cette histoire n’est pas unique. Certes, c’est une histoire vécue et plusieurs d’entre vous ont eu le privilège de vivre des expériences semblables. La vie est parfois imprévisible et inexplicable, par contre, pour réussir, j’ai eu l’audace, comme vous, d’accepter et de relever à ma façon les défis.

Mon séjour obligatoire et mémorable au jardin d’enfants à l’école primaire Sainte-Croix fut tout de même sans incident majeur. Je me suis conformé aux roulements journaliers des activités de la classe. Toutefois, j’ai un souvenir qui vient me toucher tout particulièrement.

Je devais m’asseoir sur le numéro cinq qui était intercalé dans les tuiles sur le plancher. Je ne peux pas vous dire pourquoi ce numéro me saute à l’esprit, mais j’étais assurément bien placé. Je pouvais voir le pupitre de l’enseignante et la porte d’entrée de la classe à ma gauche, le comptoir au fond de la classe directement devant moi et les grandes fenêtres à ma droite. J’avais une place stratégique, une place clé pour m’introduire au merveilleux monde de la distraction. C’est à ce moment dans ma vie d’élève que j’ai commencé à manquer d’attention aux choses dont j’aurais dû normalement m’occuper. Par conséquent, les commentaires élogieux de mon enseignante

comme « Gilles manque d’attention », « Gilles est souvent distrait », « Gilles peut faire mieux » se retrouvaient dans la section « commentaires » de mes bulletins. Soyez assurés que les remarques comme « Gilles était gentil, attentionné et ne dérangeait pas les autres » ne se retrouvaient pas dans aucun de mes bulletins, certainement pas au jardin!

Pendant que soeur « M » enseignait, je regardais par la fenêtre qui faisait face au sud. Je voyais la nouvelle construction du presbytère et de l’église Sainte-Croix en silhouette sur un ciel clair et je passais de nombreuses minutes à suivre le contour des formes géométriques de cette structure complexe qui me fascinait.

Pour ce qui est de la sieste, pas de sieste pour Gilles. Ma place pour le repos bien mérité, pour la majorité de mes copines et copains de classe, était à proximité de la porte d’entrée de la salle de classe. Je m’étendais sur ma couverture mince qui couvrait à peine l’espace nécessaire pour me donner un minimum de confort et ne masquait aucunement les propriétés dures du plancher.

C’était pour moi une activité ennuyeuse. Tout de même, c’était une place exceptionnelle. Entre le bas de la porte et le plancher se trouvait un espace d’au moins trois centimètres. Par cette ouverture étroite entrait un courant d’air constant qui portait des odeurs subtiles, des odeurs d’école. L’école Sainte-Croix possédait un bouquet bien particulier. Un cocktail de cire à plancher, d’huile à vadrouille, de désinfectant et de chaussures bien usées. Aussi, cet espace par excellence me permettait de voir des jeux de

lumière intéressants créés par ceux qui passaient de l’autre côté de la porte et d’entendre des sons inintelligibles, des voix lointaines et des pas rapides d’enfants autres que moi. À l’occasion, j’avais le petit bonheur de jouer aux pichenottes.

Je roulais en petites boules n’importe quoi à ma disposition, des bouts de papier de construction, des morceaux de colle sèche et des petites mottes de terre, pour les envoyer sous la porte avec un coup de doigt bien placé. La classe était sombre et tout se passait à l’insu de soeur « M ».

De temps à autre, je levais la tête pour tourner mon regard d’investigateur sur ce qui se passait autour de moi. Je crois que soeur « M » aimait beaucoup ce temps de la journée, car sur sa chaise, dans un coin de la classe, elle demeurait immobile et paisible. À ma gauche, j’enviais mes amis de classe qui sommeillaient doucement.

La sieste du matin était enfin terminée.

L’enseignante avait demandé aux élèves d’aller, d’une façon ordonnée, ranger les couvertures et ensuite s’asseoir sur son numéro assigné. Étant près de la porte j’entendis des sons inhabituels qui flottaient vers moi et qui s’infiltraient par ses fissures. Après quelques moments d’attention et de raisonnement, j’ai réalisé que le son, qui se rapprochait peu à peu, ressemblait mystérieusement au cliqua-clan-qua-taing de verre contre verre et verre contre métal. Ce bruit agréable m’était connu. Il ressemblait beaucoup au son de Monsieur Deschamps notre laitier.

Tout à coup, à ma grande surprise, le bruit cessa et des cognements firent vibrer la porte de notre classe. Soeur « M », un sourire aux lèvres, s’empressa d’aller ouvrir la porte pour accueillir

les visiteurs étrangers. M. Rosaire Léger un enseignant, un homme grand et imposant, accompagné de Michel Varin un élève de 3e ou 4e année sont entrés. (Je ne connaissais pas les noms de ces personnes à l’époque.)

En voyant Monsieur Léger se diriger vers le comptoir avec ce qu’il portait au bout du bras par une poignée et le bruit cliqua-clan-qua-taing mes yeux se sont ouverts grands comme jamais, grands au point de les perdre. Monsieur Léger, que je n’oublierai jamais, portait un panier rectangulaire en métal exactement comme celui de Monsieur Deschamps. Ce qui était pour moi à ce moment, d’une valeur inestimable, c’était le contenu du panier. Ce dernier, composé de bandes de métal argenté, contenait de nombreuses petites bouteilles remplies de jus de pommes! Des mini bouteilles de lait remplies de jus de pommes? J’étais au ciel! J’aurais pu applaudir, mais je me suis maîtrisé.

Pendant quelques minutes, soeur « M », avec l’aide de Michel et de Monsieur Léger, distribua à chaque élève de la classe une petite bouteille au contenu doré!

Assis à ma place, sur le plancher dur, je dégustais lentement ce régal tout en appréciant la gentillesse de soeur « M », de Monsieur Léger et de Michel.

Oupsss! Je savais que ce petit bonheur était trop beau pour durer ... j’ai commencé à avoir envie!

La CNS garde plusieurs sentiers ouverts en hiver

NATION, Ontario - La Conservation de la Nation Sud (CNS) invite les résidents à profiter de plus de 30 kilomètres de sentiers locaux qui demeurent ouverts et entretenus tout au long de l’hiver.

Les sentiers des aires de conservation suivantes de la CNS sont entretenus tout l’hiver et sont accessibles gratuitement : W.E. Burton et J. Henry Tweed dans Russell, la forêt Two Creeks à Morrisburg, Robert Graham à Glen Stewart et la forêt Warwick à Berwick.

Les 14 autres aires de conservation à utilisation

diurne de la CNS situées sur son territoire de 4 384 kilomètres carrés dans l’Est de l’Ontario demeurent fermées pour permettre les opérations courantes d’entretien hivernal et rouvriront en mai.

Students to rally over OSAP cuts Nick Seebruch

CORNWALL, Ontario – Students are planning province wide rallies on Feb. 4 against the Ford government’s changes to the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP).

In Cornwall, the rally will be taking place in front of MPP Jim McDonell’s office.

One student who plans on being at the rally

is Lee Barre, a 28-year-old nursing student at St. Lawrence College. Barre said he will be affected by the changes the Ford government intends to enact this fall.

The Ford government announced a $600 million cut to student grants and a $440 million cut to universities and colleges.

Additionally, the Ford government has reduced the number of families who

will be eligible for OSAP and did away with the six-month interest exemption period after graduation.

In exchange, all universities and colleges are expected to enact a 10 percent cut to their tuition.

“One thing that students are very vocal about is the removal of the grace period and the changes to how loans are applied,” said Barre.

No student will now be eligible for more grants than the amount of loans they are receiving, which means more money for students to pay back.

“I’m not happy, or dismayed,” said Barre. “I understand that things are changing.”

Barre encouraged students to come out to the rally on Feb. 4 to get as much information as possible.

An amazing adventure Provided by Sharon Miller

This is a story about an amazing adventure and young people who are committed to making this a better world. More than ten years ago as a toddler, Landon Galt began attending meetings of the Rotary Club of Cornwall Sunrise with his grandparents, Gilles Renaud and Sharon Miller. During that time, Landon who is now twelve, truly became a young Rotarian who understood and participated in meetings, fundraising and local projects. He even accompanied them and participated in two missions to El Salvador to build houses in one of the villages as well as attending various Rotary conventions.

Within the past two years, Landon’s young cousin was introduced to the family ethic of volunteering to make a difference. Jakob “Jak” Bellavance is a naturally enthusiastic and innovative youngster of seven who learned about polio from his grandparents and decided to do something about helping to eradicate it. For the past few months Jak has undertaken his own mission for change by explaining the importance of eradicating polio through the school newsletter. This led to fundraising initiatives such as a purple pinkie day, the creation of a video that was shared at his mother’s place of work, speaking to his extended family members and being awarded the student council’s bake sale proceeds. Landon has received fundraising support from his hockey team and various friends and family members as well and in total, the boys raised more that one thousand dollars to help Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign.

On Christmas Day (2018) the family embarked on the adventure of a lifetime when they left home for India. From January 4 -7, 2019, the Rotary Club of Agra Taj Mahal in District D3110 organized activities around an Immunization Day for Agra and surrounding communities to support National Immunization Day (NID) and Rotary International’s efforts to eradicate polio from the face of the earth.

The 83 Rotarians and friends of Rotary from Canada, the United States, Bahamas, Australia, Norway and the UK administered the immunizing drops to more than 4,000 children. Under the supervision of Rotarians, Jak and Landon were able to fully participate in all of the activities.

The Rotary Club of Agra Taj Mahal has much experience with NIDs and organized exciting rallies and hand-outs to encourage local people to have their children immunized at one of the 16 sites that had been set-up. They also showed visitors some of their other accomplishments including a visit to a Rotary school where the boys were able to add donations of school supplies and small toys and treats to the schools “magic cupboard”, and where they donated two dozen soccer balls, team jerseys, and other soccer equipment. The school also has an enterprise centre attached where women were undertaking sewing projects. Sharon was able to present 50 feminine hygiene kits and share her club’s “Go with the Flow” TM program with them to assist girls to stay in school after they reach puberty.

The CAO/Clerk is responsible for providing effective advice to Council on corporate activities and the business affairs of the Township, in compliance with by-laws, policies and statutory requirements. The CAO/Clerk builds strong working relationships with stakeholders and provides leadership and mentorship to staff in executing a positive strategic vision that meets the current and future needs of North Stormont.

The ideal candidate will possess a combination of significant experience and relevant education in municipal government. Strong interpersonal and engaged communication skills, combined with a solid understanding of municipal operations are a necessity.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Students had the opportunity to leave a rainbow handprint and write their name on a canvas at St. Lawrence College (SLC) between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, kicking of SLC Pride Week.

“It’s an annual week (of pride events) but usually we change the weeks (each year),” explained Ashleigh Cummings, Cornwall Student Union (CSU) Vice President. Cummings said that last year’s SLC Pride Week was postponed to March

due to the strike.

The CSU, in partnership with SLC Pride, have scheduled various events throughout the Cornwall campus this week to recognize and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.

“We just (want to) make sure everyone feels included,” said Cummings. “We are lucky to have SLC Pride this year to make sure everyone feels included (on campus) and celebrate (pride).”

Cummings explained that the canvas would later be displayed in the SLC Shark Tank Lounge. Pride pins will also be available in the lounge, along with a message

board in which students are encouraged to leave positive notes and sentiments.

“All of this stuff is going to be left out all week for students to access at the Shark Tank Lounge,” she said.

More Pride Week events on campus will include an SLC Pride scavenger hunt, Ru Paul’s Drag race being shown in the lounge, students distributing rainbow cookies and offering LGBT sandwiches provided by Browns, as well as the Capital Kings hosting a drag show on Friday.

The service will allow for CCPS dispatchers to communicate with deaf, hard of hearing and speech impaired (DHHSI) individuals via text (SMS) in emergency situations.

According to Stephanie MacRae, CCPS Communications Coordinator, CCPS is pleased to offer the new service to DHHSI residents of Cornwall as they understand how effective communication is extremely important during an emergency.

individuals requiring emergency services can make a voice call to 911. The dispatcher will be notified that the caller is registered with Text with 911 and will then initiate text messaging with the caller,” said MacRae, explaining the setup process.

“When a voice call is not possible, Text with 911 will provide DHHSI individuals with an alternative and effective method of relaying critical information to a 911 dispatcher,” she added.

Neighbouring cities such as Ottawa and Kingston have also adopted this essential service. For more information and to see a full list of cities with the option, visit www.textwith911.ca.

“The service is currently and actively available to DHHSI residents of Cornwall,” explained MacRae. “It was activated in 2018, following extensive testing of the new technology and training of emergency personnel.”

MacRae said that Text with 911 was implemented to ensure that all residents have equitable access to help in an emergency. The service is only intended to be used by members of the DHHSI community and voice calling remains the only way to communicate with 911 for residents who are not a part of the DHHSI community.
