Start the New Year with a fantasy

WILLIAMSTOWN, Ontario - The Nor’Westers and Loyalist Museum in Williamstown, in partnership with the Williamstown Fire Department hosted a traditional Scottish celebration of the New Year.

Taking place on New Year’s Eve, the museum held a Hogmanay. A Hogmanay is a Scottish tradition to ring in the New Year.

“The most important night in Scotland is Hogmanay night before the New Year,” said Joyce Lewis, President of the Nor’Westers and Loyalist Museum. “Because of the strong Scottish heritage in South Glengarry we wanted to do something to celebrate that culture.”

There were fireworks, food, a bonfire and a

horse drawn carriage ride through town.

Lewis explained that after the end of the old year and the beginning of the new, there is the Scottish tradition of First Footing.

To literally get the year off on the right foot it is a tradition in Scotland for homes to be visited by a friend after midnight. The friend should usually be a tall, handsome man who must offer something to keep you warm, something to eat and something to drink.

CORNWALL, Ontario – This February, Fantasy Realm and Randy Sauve will be celebrating 34 years in business. Randy has collected a lot of gems over the years, and now he’s willing to part with these treasures for the low price of a dollar.

From now until Feb. 2, Fantasy Realm is having a Dollar Days fundraiser.

“When we renovated the store in ’91 we had just six years of storage,” he said. “I’ve had to shrink down my store size as stock has crept in, so this is to curb that.”

comic business, he has new items coming in every week, with older stuff being quickly pushed into stock.

He went on to say that he had done a review of his stock over the summer.

“Some of these I’ve had since I opened, and I asked myself why I’m holding onto this stuff,” he said.

All the comics that come in the white boxes in Fantasy Realm are a dollar. As boxes are emptied over this next month, Randy says that he has plenty more to replace them.

CRTF and partners reflect on volunteer achievements CORNWALL & SDG, Ontario – Members of the Cornwall Regional Task Force (CRTF), and its joint partner Canada Border Services Agency Enforcement and Intelligence Unit (CBSA E&I), were happy to be active in the community during the 2018 holiday season.

Kicking off the festive season, members of the CRTF and CBSA E&I were excited to participate in the Cornwall Santa Claus Parade. Officers walked with their families alongside the decorated boat float and all-terrain vehicle while distributing candy canes. The RCMP Safety Bear

mascot was a highlight of the event.

Cornwall fire crew and Sparky attended the CRTF building on December 14 to collect donated presents for Sparky’s Toy Drive. Toys were donated by employees of CRTF and CBSA E&I and then distributed to local children.

“We all believe that on Christmas morning, every child should wake up to find a present,” said Sgt. Cynthia Savard in a press release.

Police officers, public servants, family members of the CRTF, partners from the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service, the OPP, Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department and Mohawk Tribal Police sang Christmas carols at the Tsiikwanonhso:te Akwesasne Long Term

Care Home and the Iakhihsohtha Lodge for the Elderly this year. Residents of both homes enjoyed the performances and company. The RCMP Safety Bear and Santa Clause also made an appearance.

In preparation for the holiday season, the CBSA also organized a reverse advent calendar, in which individuals needed to donate each day towards local food banks.

“Everyone actively participated in this great initiative,” said Sgt. Savard.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Urban Planet, which opened its doors at the Eastcourt Mall in October of 2013, is hoping to relocate to the Cornwall Square within the next month.

“We’re really excited,” said Sara Schmidt, Store Manager. “We are looking forward to starting a new adventure in a new location…the whole team that is here will be relocating with the store as well.”

“It will be nice to be located in the heart of town. Some of my management team has worked at the Cornwall Square in the past…I think that’s why we have such a positive outlook about it,” added Schmidt.

According to Schmidt, the store will move into the second floor of the mall in the space that was previously occupied by Sears. Although Schmidt could not confirm an exact move in or opening date, she is hoping that the process will be quick. “(We) don’t have an official date but are hoping for the end of January,” said Schmidt.

The store relocation contradicts previous reports about the future of the old Sears portion of the mall. In March Cornwall Seaway News learned from Cornwall Square managing staff that that 96,000 sq. ft. portion of the mall was to

Last year, I took a lengthy hiatus. I had time to regroup, and while I took time to myself, I made plans for the future about things I wanted to accomplish. With that being said, I wanted to express and share my goals for 2019 with you.

Since October 2012, I have been researching Cornwall’s House of Refuge. (If you are not familiar with this facility, it operated between 1913 and 1952, at what is now known as Heartwood Nursing home on Eleventh Street. The current nursing home once operated as a local poor house.)

Having taken a such a lengthy break, I want to take my research a few steps further.

Researching the lives of 906 people is a lengthy task. I have hundreds of names left to investigate, and throughout my research, it is not uncommon to find names that were not included in the original House of Refuge register.

In the future, I would like to write a book that will commemorate all of Cornwall’s House of Refuge residents, as well as pay tribute to the facility’s history.

I was granted special access from the Archives of Ontario to review restricted records pertaining to some of Cornwall’s House of Refuge residents.

I am excited to plan my trip to Toronto to access them!

In 2017, I petitioned the Canadian government into creating “Poor House Commemoration Day.” The objec tive of Poor House Commemoration Day is to recognize and celebrate the lives of Canadian and Immigrant citizens that lived and died in: Asylums, Houses of Refuge (these facilities were only in Ontario), and Poor Houses.

Unfortunately, on January 28, 2018, I was informed of the governments response: “The Government of Canada does not have any current plans to officially designate the aforementioned date [as Poor House Commemoration Day in Canada.]” If you know me, you know I am extremely persistent. I can promise you without hesitation, that these people will get their deserved day of remembrance.

This year, I hope to visit groups and classrooms in the hopes that they will be willing to learn about House of Refuge facilities.

This is part of Canadian history that is rarely spoken about, and it is a history that deserves our attention and recognition.

Some of my other goals for 2019 include: writing columns, hosting haunted walks and historic walking tours, and promoting Cornwall’s history the best that I can!

SOUTH STORMONT, Ontario – Residents had the opportunity to join the first episode of a live action role-playing game at South Stormont Township on Saturday, Jan. 5.

Shawn Loader, Owner of Exodus LARP Systems, said that he and his wife Sarah had been working on their original LARP script since February of 2018.

“Every (player’s) interaction is meaningful. It progresses and changes the storyline as it builds,” said Loader.

Loader has been involved in the LARP community for about 12 years and believes that Exodus LARP Systems is currently the only LARP organization that exists in Cornwall and SDG. “I feel for especially the older youth...it’s more meaningful interactions than playing something

like a mass, online role-playing game,” said Loader about the benefits of LARPing. “You’re actually interacting with people.”

Loader explained that he works with a lot of skilled individuals, including great sewers and costume designers, people who make prosthetics and props, as well as Blacksmiths.

Remnants of Humanity is set 210 years after ‘the week of fire’ and nuclear warfare. For the first time, players emerge from underground to explore the world. Players must be 16-years-old and up and pay $40 during the winter months to participate for 8 hours of entertainment. Local model takes career to Japan Shawna O’Neill

CORNWALL, Ontario – Kelsey MacDonald, 21, never expected her dream of modelling to come true, especially at such a rapid pace.

NEXT Models, an agency based out of Montreal, contacted MacDonald on her Instagram page and expressed interest in working with her just over a year ago. Now, the Cornwall native is in Japan, working on projects with Bravo Management for two months.

“I think every girl wants to be a model,” said MacDonald. “It was my dream but I never really thought anything of it…my goal is to be on the

cover of a magazine.”

To date, MacDonald’s modelling has taken her across Canada. She is excited to embark on her new journey overseas and hopes it will lead to greater opportunities.

“I still can’t wait to find out what my future has in store,” said MacDonald. “It’s an amazing experience meeting all these new people and getting to travel.”

Some may recognize MacDonald from her growing portfolio of work. She can be seen on nation-wide Shoppers Drug Mart beauty signs, in Maison Birks catalogues, in L’Intervalle magazine and in Giant Tiger flyers. Ironically, MacDonald works at Giant Tiger in the city part-time.

MacDonald feels that she has grown as a person since the start of her career.

“Modelling is absolutely amazing and it has changed my whole perspective on how I see myself,” she said. “I find I’m more self-confident…

I’ve met so many people over this; I just feel more confident talking to people.”

MacDonald is thankful for everyone who has helped her on her journey. She is especially thankful that her father has drove her to Montreal whenever possible for meetings or photoshoots.

“NEXT is a great company to be with for sure,” she said. “I love both of my agencies (NEXT and Bravo) dearly, my agents and family.”

Where to buy your own supply?

A major municipal issue that I followed through the last election was whether municipalities would allow private marijuana vendors within their jurisdictions, now, changes by the Ford government seem to have made this a moot point.

Due to concerns over the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS)’s ability to supply vendors, the government has limited the number of private marijuana vendors in the province of Ontario to just 25.

That’s right, 25; for a province of 13 million people spread across over 1 million sq. km.

To distribute these 25 licensed stores across the province, the government has decided to create a lottery system.

Entrepreneurs can apply to be entered into this lottery system, but there is a catch. The government has divided the province into different regions, and the region we fall into, the Eastern Region, will only get five licensed vendors.

Additionally, a vendor must be in a municipality with more than 50,000 people. Seeing as neither Cornwall, nor the surrounding townships meet that 50,000 threshold, those five licensed vendors will either be in Ottawa or

Kingston.

For a party and a government that says they’re “open for business” they seem to have really throttled this business opportunity.

Instead of restricting growth in this new business sector, why not grow the supply side?

Marijuana retail can prove to be a new business sector for municipalities, boosting direct tax revenue through property taxes and boosting tourism.

Additionally, if supply is the problem, then why not build a production industry to meet that demand?

There are 81 licensed marijuana producers in the province of Ontario that supply the OCS, including Akwesasne’s own Seven Leaf Med. Since the Ford government is so anti-regulation, why not deregulate this industry to a point where it is easier for producers to get more established.

Let the free market determine what demand the industry can bare. I think we are really missing out on an opportunity right now as a province for some increased economic growth and tax revenue.

During the 2018 municipal election, I asked candidates for council in Cornwall and the surrounding municipalities if they were in favour of private marijuana vendors. At the time, the provincial government made this seem like an

urgent issue. The plan then was that municipalities had to either “opt-in” or “opt-out” and I was a strong advocate for all local municipalities to opt-in.

Now however, it seems that even taking a vote on private marijuana vendors is a waste of time for municipal councils.

South Stormont is the only municipal council that has already voted on the matter and they chose to opt-in. I wonder if their vote would have been the same if they had known that their chances of getting even a single

vendor in their municipality was so close to zero.

As it stands now, municipalities still have until Jan. 22 to either opt-in or out. Cornwall City Council next meets on Jan. 14, will see how they vote on this issue, if they choose to vote on it at all.

In my view we must adopt deliberate measures in conjunction with a strategic approach to resolve it once and for all. At least, we should stop blaming poor people and try to understand the circumstances that make them more vulnerable to poverty rather.

Poverty is far too expensive collectively for all of us to ignore. Canada ranks poorly for child

poverty. According to a study made by UNICEF - out of the 23 richest countries in the world - we rank 17th.

We do not live on an isolated island where we can ignore consideration for others.

In fact, it is crucial to understand that social justice is not equality of assets for all. In essence, social justice is equality of opportunity. In reality, nobody wants to be poor.

letters to the editor Dear Editor, Poverty is an important social issue because it affects the development of children and adults. In fact, people left out economically also tend to be marginalized socially. Some people are ruined overnight because of debts, family breakups or the death of their spouse. In addition, the lack of qualification and health problems; physical or mental are also common causes of poverty.

Employment is the best way to avoid poverty. Indeed, reintegration in the labour market should be the priority for all levels of the government. Getting employment is one thing, but having a good job and keeping it is another matter altogether.

The links between poverty and health are well established. The poorer one is, the worse one’s health becomes.

It might not be a case of breaking down the doors, but back in October 82 of Ontario’s 411 municipalities elected a female head of council, several of them the municipality’s first female mayor, or in a few cases, reeve.

The 82 is believed to be an all-time high on the gender scoreboard.

In case you just emerged from a coma, Cornwall elected its first female mayor, Bernadette Clement, on Oct. 22, something that must have some of the ancient sweats spinning in their graves.

Many years ago a Cornwall alderman, as they were called in those days, attended a law enforcement conference in Ottawa with a couple members of the local force. One of the senior officers at the conference was a female OPP staff sergeant. Our city alderman was surprised, perhaps shocked would be a better word, to see a high-ranking female police officer.

The Cornwall force had yet to hire a female officer.

“You married?” he asked.

“Yes, have three children,” she said.

“Well, you should be home taking care of your kids.”

This was followed by five seconds of dead silence in the room.

mayor from 1978 until 2014 when she retired and passed the torch to Bonnie Crombie who was re-elected in October. The last time Mississauga (pop. 726,359) had a male as mayor the National Hockey League had teams called the North Stars, Golden Seals and Scouts, ground beef sold for 85 cents a pound and gasoline was 62 cents a gallon (15 cents a litre).

In Peterborough (pop. 78,700) Diane Therrien, after one term as a councillor, is the city’s third female mayor. Burlington (pop.

Le vendredi 14 décembre 2018, les élèves des 3 classes de la 6e année ainsi que leurs enseignantes: Mesdames Mélanie Quesnel, France Sabourin et Caroline Lauzière-Finnson, ont organisé un bazar de jouets et de livres à l’école Rose des Vents.

Ce bazar a pour but d’éviter que des jouets et livres en bon état se retrouvent aux poubelles et ainsi donner une autre vie à ces objets!

Avant l’événement, les élèves de l’école apportent des jouets et des livres qu’ils n’utilisent plus à la maison mais qui sont encore en bon état pour être réutilisés. Lorsqu’un élève fait un don, il reçoit un coupon qui lui donne le droit de se rendre au bazar lors de la journée du vendredi pour se choisir un autre trésor!

Lors de la journée du bazar, les élèves de 6e année doivent classer les dons en catégories et reçoivent ensuite les élèves qui magasiner un nouvel article avec leur coupon. Les élèves des classes de la 6e année font en sorte que la journée soit bien organisée et que l’échange se fasse bien. À la fin de la journée, tous les jouets et livres restants sont mis dans des sacs et sont offerts gracieusement au Centre Agapè. Ce centre va se charger de les distribuer aux personnes de notre communauté.

des amis et la poursuite d’un idéal. Avec ces cinq composantes, je me réalise comme personne entière. Le bonheur n’est pas une récompense, mais plutôt une conséquence naturelle d’une bonne vie.

Je considère mon enfance dans le quartier est de Cornwall une enfance heureuse. Mes apprentissages provenaient de six centres d’intérêt : la famille, le voisinage, l’école primaire Sainte-Croix, la paroisse Sainte-Croix, le parc Saint-Joseph et le champ de la soie. Ce dernier était le dépotoir industriel de Courtaulds que l’on appelait la « dump » prononcée « dompe » qui était à 300 m de ma cour arrière.

Partie 1. septembre 1954 J’ai toujours cru que je suis le résultat de mes choix, de mes expériences de mon vécu, de mon environnement, et plusieurs autres facteurs que je laisse de côté pour le moment. Je me suis arrêté une soirée à méditer cette notion.

Ce que je désire depuis le début de mon existence et dont j’ai obtenu jusqu’à un certain point, c’est le bonheur. « Quand j’étais petit, ma mère m’a dit que le bonheur était la clé de la vie. A l’école, quand on m’a demandé d’écrire ce que je voulais être plus tard, j’ai répondu « heureux ». Ils m’ont dit que je n’avais pas compris la question, je leur ai répondu qu’ils n’avaient pas compris la vie. » John Lennon Le bonheur, dit Félicien Marceau, « c’est savoir ce que l’on veut et le vouloir passionnément. » La vie c’est choisir. Tous les choix que j’ai faits à partir de décisions auxquelles j’ai donné préférence à une chose au lieu d’une autre, me placent aujourd’hui devant le clavier de mon ordinateur à Cornwall en Ontario, Canada.

Si je vais à une partie de hockey, j’exclus une infinité d’autres choses que j’aurais pu faire. Si je regarde un long métrage à la télévision, je sacrifie le sommeil au spectacle. À l’époque de mon enfance, lorsque j’apportais mes cinq bouteilles de boissons gazeuses vides chez Boulanger, le dépanneur, qui était en face de chez nous sur la rue Danis, j’étais heureux de recevoir 10 cents. Pendant une quinzaine de minutes, je faisais damner M. Boulanger devant le comptoir de bonbons. Je réalise aujourd’hui, une soixantaine d’années plus tard, qu’en achetant une poignée de bonbons que j’enfouissais dans ma poche pleine de sable, je renonçais à tout ce que j’aurais pu acheter avec cette somme. Donc, le choix fait appel à mon sens des valeurs qui vient de mon bagage de connaissances, de mon éducation et de la grandeur de la tâche que je désire accomplir. Pour moi, les bonbons étaient très importants!

Puisque les membres des peuples autochtones constituent une proportion importante de la population dans les zones desservies par les tribunaux de Kenora, London et Timmins, nous encourageons tout particulièrement les personnes d’ascendance autochtone et les personnes ayant une connaissance approfondie des communautés autochtones et des enjeux qui touchent ces communautés à poser leur candidature pour ces postes à pourvoir.

Suite de la page 11 Dans le texte qui suit, j’effleure les grandes lignes de mon séjour à l’école primaire Sainte-Croix.

Le qualificatif « primaire » est devenu « élémentaire » il y a déjà plusieurs années. De plus, l’édifice dont les classes et les couloirs débordaient d’activités n’est plus. Pourtant, les couloirs de ma mémoire débordent de souvenirs, bons comme moins bons, du temps passé dans cette institution. Tous les apprentissages pédagogiques de cette époque, du jardin d’enfants à la huitième année, font depuis longtemps partie d’un méli-mélo de savoir, d’instruction et de formation, acquis depuis très longtemps. Les textes « Viens voir - Viens te promener - Viens travailler viens jouer » avec Paul, Jeanne, Bébé Lise, Pompon et Fido, « Chez nous » où j’ai appris à connaître Pierre, Anne, Maman, Papa et les amis, « Habitations et Nations » texte illustré d’images de couleurs rudimentaires - vert, bleu rouge et jaune - et j’en laisse, ne sont que des projections lointaines.

Par contre, les expériences vécues, les valeurs inculquées, et les qualités de caractère que j’ai développées vibrent toujours aussi fort chez moi. Ce sont ces expériences de vie qui sont, à mon avis très importantes.

Ce sont ces moments vécus qui forment mon tempérament et mes mœurs. Ce sont ces expériences de vie qui permettent à une jeune fille ou à un jeune garçon d’atteindre, à sa façon, son plein potentiel et par conséquent parvenir à son bonheur.

L’école Sainte-Croix, après ma famille, fut le premier pas vers mon avenir.

Cette école toute neuve ouvre ses portes en septembre 1949 pour accueillir les enfants d’une population grandissante dans ce quartier dans l’est de Cornwall. Son inauguration eut lieu en 1950.

Mes premiers jours à Sainte-Croix - septembre 1954 - furent intéressants pour ne pas trop exagérer. Pour m’y rendre, je devais marcher plus d’un kilomètre, pas d’autobus pour Ti-Gilles. Maman savait bien que j’étais un jeune débrouillard et aventureux et que possiblement, je me retrouverais à un autre endroit qu’à l’école. Pour atténuer ses inquiétudes, elle demanda à Suzanne Boulanger, voisine d’en face qui était en cinquième ou sixième année, de m’amener à l’école par la main. Autour du cou, je portais un sac en matériel bleu que maman m’avait confectionné. À l’intérieur se retrouvaient une petite couverture pour la sieste, des chaussettes pour ne pas salir le plancher fraichement ciré et une blouse de travail pour les projets d’art.

Ce qui m’a impressionné le plus en entrant dans ma première salle de classe fut son immensité et sa propreté. Au centre de la classe, sur le plancher de tuiles lisses et bien polies, se trouvait un cercle à l’intérieur duquel se trouvaient des chiffres intercalés.

Chaque élève avait son numéro et sa place sur le plancher.

Ma première pensée, « Ça va être le fun! » À ma grande surprise, « Non, pas du tout. » Ma première tâche; « Maîtriser ma vessie. » Le matin de cette journée infâme, j’ai éprouvé une envie intense de faire pipi que je n’ai jamais ressentie auparavant. Sans doute que le verre de jus et les deux tasses de coco (cacao) chaud du petit déjeuner avaient une certaine responsabilité pour cette affreuse situation. Dans l’impossibilité de me retenir

plus longtemps, j’ai osé lever la main.

Sœur « M » m’a regardé avec un regard sérieux et dédaigneux, examine son registre et dit « Oui Gilles? » Je lui ai demandé, « ma sœur, puis-je aller à la toilette? » À ma très grande surprise, elle a répondu, « Non. Attends la récréation! ». Ce qui n’aurait jamais dû arriver est arrivé. Humilié, J’ai fait pipi dans ma culotte. En voyant le dégât, sœur « M » m’a conduit à la porte de l’entrée principale de l’école en me disant de retourner à la maison pour me changer de linge. Débrouillard, avec une mémoire d’éléphant, je me suis dirigé chez moi en passant par quatre chemins pour tenter de faire sécher ma culotte. Déjà, à ce bas âge, je me sentais inconfortable et embarrassé.

Toutefois, je n’ai pas perdu mon objectif.

Après cette longue marche de la rue Anthony à la rue Danis en passant par la Walton, la Lefebvre et la Easton je suis arrivé à la maison. Je me suis assis sur le seuil de la porte d’en avant qui, malheureusement, était sous clé. J’y suis resté pour un bon bout de temps avant que maman, en faisant son ménage, me trouva assis, bien à l’aise, au soleil.

J’ai passé le reste de ma journée à la maison, qui à mes yeux d’enfants, était un dédommagement, une sorte de récompense. Ce fut pour moi une première et une dernière, heureusement!

Malgré tout, sœur « M » m’a donné ma première leçon en matière de courage, de fierté, d’endurance, de détermination, et l’importance d’accomplir la tâche requise. De plus, je me suis aventuré dans des voisinages nouveaux! À partir de mon verre de jus, mes deux tasses de coco (cacao), mon pipi et la réponse sévère de mon enseignante, mon univers venait de s’agrandir.

Quel bonheur!

CORNWALL, Ontario – Canadian Blood Services held their first donor clinic of the New Year on Tuesday, Jan. 1 at the Cornwall Civic Complex.

A total of 119 people attended the clinic on Jan. 1 and 99 were able to make a donation.

Mary Ann St. Michael, Territory Manager with Canadian Blood Services, believes these numbers reflected great attendance.

“We had our first New Year’s Day mobile blood donor centre in Cornwall,” said St. Michael. “Overall, we were happy with the

results. A few people were differed for low hemoglobin and having recently travelled to (a potential) malaria zone. We usually see 130 to 140 people come down on the first Tuesday of every month when we visit Cornwall and we collect about 120 donations. It’s pretty impressive actually.”

St. Michael explained that Canadian Blood Services issued a call-out for 120 blood donations in Cornwall prior to the clinic on Jan. 1 as a low turnout was expected during the holiday.

“What we see over the holidays is a dip in people making blood donations, so we

anticipated a lower than usual turnout,” said St. Michael. “The need for blood doesn’t take a holiday.”

Blood donations are continually a necessity across the country, specifically the platelet collection, which is only usable for up to seven days. The platelet collection is often used in cancer treatments.

St. Michael believes that Cornwall collects the second most blood donations per month in Eastern ON during donor clinics. The community of Orleans collects a slightly greater amount.

“Monthly in Orleans we collect about 144

units of blood and about 120 units per month in Cornwall,” said St. Michael.

According to St. Michael, blood collected locally is most likely distributed in Eastern ON but could move across the country depending on demand.

Blood donor clinics typically occur on the first Tuesday of every month in Cornwall, held at the Cornwall Civic Complex but moved to the Ramada Inn during the summer.

“Thank you to everyone who came out on New Year’s Day in Cornwall. We hope people make donating blood their New Year’s resolution for 2019,” said St. Michael.

The Friendly Circle Seniors Club, during our annual Christmas Dinner held on December 7, 2018, drew the winner of the quilt raffle. Tickets for this raffle were sold in the local community and at various fairs throughout the Counties during the past summer.

Slow down, you’re going too fast!

Those are the opening words of Simon and Garfunkel’s delightful song, “The 59th Street Bridge”. It might be of value to take their advice this year.

When I drive at 80 kph, my fuel economy is far better than at 120. If I’m in a school zone or passing through a funeral parlour parking lot, that 120 will earn me demerit points and get me an invitation to appear in court.

Some trees are real speed freaks. Stick a row of willow or poplar scions in the ground and jump back: by the time it takes to brew a cup of coffee there’ll be a substantial wind break, a privacy screen big enough to hide a grow op or keep a beaver busy for a week. Unfortunately, willow and poplar are completely unsuitable for furniture making and even as firewood.

On the other hand, if you intend to have a forest of oaks to supply your cabinetry factory, the acorns would have to be planted by your grandfather when he was still too young to get a driver’s licence.

Slow cooking is the way to go if you’re dealing with a tough cut of meat. Before you leave for work in the morning, plunk it in a slow

cooker. Let it simmer all day. When your daily commute is over, the aroma of a tender cut will greet you at the door. There’s no such thing as instant home- made soup, stew or spaghetti sauce.

When photographing a Chinook helicopter in flight, use a relatively slow shutter speed, such as 1/60th of a second. Its massive, slow moving rotor blades will be nicely blurred. A fast shutter speed, 1/1000, will ‘freeze’ the rotor blades as if they had stopped spinning. If a helicopter’s rotor blades aren’t turning, gravity immediately takes over: crash!

When photographing car races, try using a slow shutter speed and pan your camera like a hunter’s rifle following a bird in flight. If you do

it with skill the Maserati will be sharp, but the cluttered background will be reduced to a line of streaks.

If you want to capture the sense of movement in wind-blown leaves, pounding surf, tumbling waterfalls, a flurry of wind-driven snowflakes, a relaxed shutter speed of 1/8 second will do the trick. But your camera must be as steady as the Rock of Gibraltar.

You should heed grandma or your driving instructor when they beg, “Please! Don’t drive so fast!” On the other hand, flying too slowly is not good. Lift requires the movement of air over the wing. No lift: gravity immediately takes over: crash!

Slow is not always a four-letter word.
