Taking place Jan. 11 and 12 at the Cornwall Civic Complex, Sap & Suds will feature 15 to 20 vendors including larger breweries like Labatt and Molson. Trevor MacDonald and Cory Dixon have been selected as chair and co-chair respectively for the event. “Trevor is one of our 100 Souls members who believes in what we do in the community,” said Kim Lauzon, Executive Director of Rachel’s Kids. MacDonald runs a local distribution company in Cornwall and says that giving back to the community is something that he and his company believe in. “Rachel’s Kids is such a good cause,” he said. “Giving back to the community is a big part of our community and a personal goal of mine.” MacDonald and Dixon will be working in the community to help promote the event. “If you’re not a beer drinker don’t let that discourage you,” said MacDonald. “There is

The gifts were paid for by Rachel’s Kids and Kids Korner who split the cost equally between them. “It is really heartwarming,” said Dr. Rachel Navaneelan. “I can’t even describe it.” Connor Wilson is two-and-a-half and he has been fighting leukemia since he was 17 months old. “We were very surprised when we got the call,” said Connor’s father Ryan. “Rachel’s Kids has been so much help. They’ve helped us with some renovations of our home, and provided us with gift cards for turkey.” Some of the gifts that Connor got at Kids Korner included a construction set and some Legos. *Actual amount may vary. **Targeted monthly distribution rates are based on the net asset value per unit of a fund as at the fund’s previous yearend. Target distributions are not guaranteed and may change at any time at the discretion of the fund’s Manager. If distributions paid by the fund are greater than the performance of the fund, distributions paid may include a return of capital and an investor’s original investment will shrink. A return of capital is not taxable to the investor, but will generally reduce the adjusted cost base of the securities held for tax purposes. If the adjusted cost base falls below zero, investors will realize capital gains equal to the amount below zero. Distributions are automatically reinvested unless an investor elects to receive them in cash. Investors should not confuse a fund’s distribution rate with its performance, rate of return or yield. Nick Seebruch CORNWALL, Ontario – Poirier Furniture celebrated its grand re-opening at its new location at 1400 Vincent Massey Dr. on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018. Poirier Furniture’s original location on Montreal Rd. was destroyed by fire in late July. Pierre Jette of Poirier’s said that their renewal would not have been possible without the support of the community and the hard work of their own employees. On Saturday, Poirier’s invited the community to their new store. There was food, coffee, special deals, giveaways and prizes, which included a full-room set by Ashley Home Furniture.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Krista Ryan has been sewing for the past 10 years and now, with her company Sassy Threads, she is making stylish clothes to help kids with autism cope. Ryan’s own four-year-old son has autism, and she designed a weighted vest for him to wear. “He hasn’t had a meltdown since he started wearing the vest,” she said “The weight helps him to focus and regulate
how he’s feeling. When he comes home he doesn’t want to take it off.” Some schools already offer a similar type of clothing, but the vests that the school was offering Ryan looked like a big green life-jacket, and Ryan wanted to create something more stylish that kids with autism could wear casually and with confidence. CORNWALL, Ontario - There was festive fun at the Cornwall Community Museum on Sunday, Dec. 9. Parents and kids were invited to spend an afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Claus. They joined together and made crafts, sung carols and shared in Christmas Cheer “Days like this give us the opportunity to bring people to the museum who might not often come here and teach them a little bit about local history,” said Don Smith, Associate Curator of the Cornwall Community Museum. The Cornwall Community Museum is continuing to expand its collection of local historical artifacts. Recently donated to their collection is a hand-cranked record player, donated from a local farm. CORNWALL, Ontario – Students of the TR Leger Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) in Hospitality and Tourism showcased their best chili dishes for a panel of judges on Thursday, Dec. 6. Four teams of students each prepared a chili dish, which included one vegetarian dish, a sweet peanut butter dish, a dish with bacon and a classic dish. Students served judges in the gymnasium, which was elaborately decorated for the holidays. “This is my first time making chili,” said Ashley Gagne-Paqette, a SHSM student, who had fun making her dish. “I have a lot of experience at home cooking so I kind of just used instincts and experience. I’ve only had family and friends try my food for the most part, so it will be interesting to have an outsider try it.” The team voted to have the best chili included Kurtis Cote, Brandon Hill and Brandon Murray. Tied for second were the teams of Bethanie Langabeer and Abby Nyman, and Ashley Gagne-Paquette and Cy Dumond. In third place was the team comprised of Sara Brown and Kailyn Camasso. Judges included CCPS Cst. Andrew Arbic, Mel Sommerville of Laurencrest Youth Services, local chef Matt Drouin, Jill Stewart of HEBL, UCDSB officials including Superintendent Tim Mills and Rene Bourget of TR Leger. Cooper said it was a student who recommended a chili competition. Cooper said the planning and decorating for the Cook-Off had been in the works for about three weeks and fell at a perfect, festive time for students and staff.

CORNWALL, Ontario – For the seventh year in a row, Zumba carollers will be hitting the streets between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14 to raise funds for Big Brother Big Sisters of Cornwall and District. Freezin’ for a Reason, organized by Christal Bowen of Zumba with Christal, will see about 40 to 50 volunteers dancing to holiday tunes through neighbourhoods close to Blessed Sacrament Parish this year. Bowen said that her family who lives in the area will have a warm-up, hot chocolate station for anyone who drops by. Each house that will be visited
by the dancers has been given an informative door-knocker pamphlet and a mint by Big Brothers Big Sisters. “We basically take our Zumba party to the street,” said Bowen. “The Zumba party is big energy, lots of fun and it gets everyone in the Christmas spirit.” “Pay us to stay or pay us to leave, either way your donation goes to a great cause: Big Brothers and Big Sisters,” she added. Bowen explained that her mother-in-law and father-in-law are involved with the nonprofit as ‘Bigs’, as well as her wife. “Its just always been a big part of our family to support it. If I told you that you could either pay me $500 today or $1,500 at some point down the road which would you choose? I know I’d choose to save $1,000. Now what if I also added the caveat that not only would you have to pay me $1,500 at some point in the future, but also on that day you won’t have running water? Or maybe even access to your street? How would you feel? This is basically the conundrum that Cornwall’s new City Council was facing with their water budget. Administration was asking for an increase to the Water and Waste Water budget of 4.07 percent or $25.25 to $36 per household. Part of this budget increase is to help replace or re-line aging watermains in Cornwall. The budget passed unanimously. Administration is planning to re-line or replace around 2km of watermains in 2019, this is out of 68km that they have identified as needing to be addressed. In total, there is a $38 million backlog in maintenance in just watermain infrastructure.
John St. Marseille, the City’s General Manager of Municipal Works and Infrastructure said that this backlog was the result of “historic underspending”, a notion that council seemed to agree with. St. Marseille told council that every time a watermain breaks, it costs the City three times more to repair that it would have cost just to replace or re-line and that doesn’t even take into consideration the disruption of service to the taxpayers that comes with a break. I saw quite a few comments criticizing the new council for making their first official decision a tax increase, but it was the right thing to do, and the responsible thing to do. If anything, they didn’t raise the budget enough. There are some watermain pipes in this City that are over 100-years-old. Yes, the City is going to tackle two kilometers of their backlog in 2019, but is that enough? There is 280km of pipe total, and who’s to say that more pipe becomes obsolete in 2019. Are we taking a step forward and then two steps back? It would be fiscally irresponsible to not maintain these old pipes and allow them to break. Previous councils who did not vote to
allot enough money to adequately maintain our infrastructure were being fiscally irresponsible. Not adequately raising taxes has cost Cornwall more money in the long run. That being said, I hope that our new Mayor and council do take into account the tax burden on the populace. They need to look at the financial plan, pick priorities, make sure money is being spent effectively and that taxes are levied fairly. Seeing the great increase in cost that occurs when a watermain breaks, I would say
that maintenance is a good investment of taxpayer money, but in order to avoid an exorbitant increase of burden on the taxpayers, the City may have to cut service somewhere else, at least for the time being. What do you think readers? Are we spending enough on watermain maintenance? Are you happy with a tax increase if it saves the City money down the road? governments spending more money than we have to spend or do we just like to pay taxes to cover the extras we want. I was reading the Weekly Smile in the Seaway News last week and at first I thought it was really funny. It was about two dogs and a cat who died. All three are faced with God who wants to know what they believe in. The first dog says I believe in discipline, training and loyalty to my
master. “Good” says God. “Sit down on my right side.” The second dog says I believe in love, care and protection. “Ah” said God. “You may sit to my left.” God looks at the cat and asks what do you believe in. The cat answers, “I believe you are sitting in my seat.” How sad that so many people want to be the cat. Why can’t we all be friends? Viola McRae

Dear Editor, Why is there so much anger and hate in the world? Did it start with the white man pushing the red man on to the reservation, or the black into slavery? Maybe it was the school boards dividing the French and English or Catholics and Protestants. Maybe it was the farmers not needing the neighbours to help harvest the crop.
They had new machinery to get the work done faster. Then again, maybe it was Hitler wanting to get rid of the Jews. Could it be the FrancoOntarian flag in Casselman being so much bigger than any Canadian flag I have seen? Maybe it is the atheists wanting the Lord’s Prayer removed from schools and Christ out of Christmas. Maybe it is our Federal and Provincial

How times have changed when it comes to the movie moral compass. In December 1975 the mayor of Cornwall, Gerald Parisien, took time out from trying to get the three-month-old paper mill strike settled, to call on the Ontario Board of Censors to bring down the hammer on adult entertainment movies that promoted, in the mayor’s words, an excessive amount of sex (not to be confused with today’s pornography) and violence. The week before, the Stormont Christian Council, in a Faith Page ad, took the city to task for allowing movies that promoted sex and violence (by 1970s standards) to be shown in the cityowned Capitol Theatre. The city had purchased the vacant theatre for $140,000 then leased it to a local entertainment group while deciding what to do with the building. Pointing to the protest by the city’s religious leaders, the mayor warned the censorship people that a “storm was brewing” in the city over the content of adult movies approved by the censorship body. However, the folks who operated the theatre pointed out that they couldn’t make money showing Disney-type movies most of the time. Sex and violence was a much bigger draw. The censorship board offered a solution. It told the mayor that the easiest way to put an end to the showing of adult-only movies in the city-owned
theatre, or any other movie house, was for adults to stay away. Ald. Ken Bough criticized the Christian Council for claiming that the city could tell theatre operators what they could not put on their movie screens, especially when it came to adult movies approved by the censorship people. Ald. Angelo Lebano had an idea: He said that it might be time to turn the theatre into a parking lot, a comment that went over like the proverbial lead balloon with the group fighting to save the theatre. ************************************ Meanwhile, two weeks after it voted to call the new arena/convention centre the Cornwall Civic Complex, several city councillors were having second thoughts. But the 7-5 vote to come up with another name failed to pass the two-thirds (12 councillors and mayor) needed to overturn the decision. Ald. Angelo Lebano reminded his colleagues that they shouldn’t forget who was the driving force behind the complex that was paid for with government grants. It was a reference to the role former mayor Ed Lumley played in convincing the senior levels of government to finance the facility. But Ald. Brian Lynch argued that the complex should not be named after a living politician (aka Lumley). Another councillor thought Memorial Centre was a better fit, while city resident Bob Earle, in a letter to the editor, suggested Parkside Palladium. Building manager Jack Jordan told council he didn’t care what the place was called, he just needed a name so he could start promoting the facility. In the end, council voted to honour the former mayor by calling the arena the Ed Lumley Arena. ALSO THIS WEEK IN 1975 - Mail order

Growing with demand Advertising feature CORNWALL, Ontario – This past October Cristill Rock completed an extensive renovation to help them better meet the ever-increasing demand on their products and services. With Cristill Rock’s coffee business continuing to grow, the expansion became inevitable. “We’ve been at the same location for 20 years,” said Rock Plouffe co-owner of Cristill Rock. “We have over 400 brands of coffee and the biggest challenge was fitting 420 brands of coffee in the smaller space.” The goal of the renovation was more than just about increasing space however, it was also about convenience. “It was also about the convenience for the customer,” said Christine Plouffe co-owner of Cristill Rock. “Our coffee and water vending machines are now under one roof.” The remodel has also extended to their popular refill vending machines. Customers can refill their 18L water bottles 24/7 at the vending machines inside the store and can pay with Visa, debit or cash now on all machines.
Cristill Rock was closed briefly during the renovations, about a week and a half, but the owners say that they have heard nothing but good things from their customers about the new store. Cristill Rock serves many businesses and grocery stores in Cornwall and the surrounding area and have done so for 25 years. Last summer, they delivered over 30,000 18L bottles every month through their distribution network only, but that is only a fraction of their potential production. Rock Plouffe estimates that Cristill Rock has the potential to produce as many as 89,600 18L bottles a week. Cristill Rock is a local business and all of the contractors and designers that they hired for the renovation were also local. They are also environmentally minded. They are committed to the environment focusing on bringing biodegradable packaging with select products and emphasis on reusable/returnable/ refillable packaging. They are continually adding organic, compostable, and recyclable pods to their coffee selections. Cristill Rock is family owned and run. They are located at 1140 Brookdale Ave. and look forward to continuing to serve the community in the years to come.

Dear Santa, My name is Olivia, I am 11-years-old and in the 6th grade. How is Mrs. Claus doing? Do you think she will come out this year with you to deliver toys for a change? This year for Christmas I would like new ear phones, clothes and maybe some gift cards to go shopping. I am also writing for my little brother Levi, he is 2 years old, and since he isn’t in school yet, he can’t write you a letter. This year I really think he would love anything with baby shark because he is obsessed! He also likes to color, read bedtime stories, and if you bring him any learning toys that would be good too! Hope that Rudolph is REDdy to fly, and you have a safe flight, as always we will leave out treats for you. Love, Olivia and Levi

Dear Santa, How are you and Mrs. Claus doing? I bet it must be busy at the North Pole these days. My name is Trinity and I am 13-years-old. For Christmas this year I was really hoping for a bean bag chair, gift cards for shopping and maybe some new clothes. This Christmas is the very first Christmas for my baby brother Nate, he’ll be 11 months on Christmas Eve!! Since he is extra adorable, but can’t talk quite yet I have made a list of things I think he would like. Since we live in Winter-peg a nice fluffy hat to keep him nice and warm, some new shoes since he is close to walking, and some toys. I’ll make sure to leave out some milk and cookies for you. Love,Trinity and Nate

Use oven cleaners only on shiny porcelain-coated metal surfaces or glass. Never use them on continuous-cleaning(dull finish)or self-cleaning oven finishes or on bare metal. Some oven-cleaning products contain lye, one of the most dangerous substance sold for household use. Lye causes a chemical reaction, decomposing the stuck-on fats and sugars into soapy compounds you can wash away.

Vigil held in Cornwall remembering École Polytechnique massacre Nick Seebruch
nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall Public Library held a memorial vigil on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018 to mark the 29th year since the massacre at École Polytechnique. On Dec. 6, 1989, a 25-year-old man shot and killed 14 women at École Polytechnique and wounded 14 others before turning the gun on himself. The attacker blamed women and feminists for ruining his life. Baldwin House. “You’d think in 30 years we would have come a long way, but we haven’t.” MacNeil explained that the group that gathered for the evening discussed parallels between the École Polytechnique and the van attacker who in April of this year intentionally struck innocent people with a van along Yonge St. in the Finch area of Toronto. He killed 10 people and injured 15 others. The van attacker identified with the socalled “Incel” or “Involuntary Celibate” movement, a primarily male dominated movement in which individuals blame people other than themselves, mostly women, for their own social failings. After the discussion, a candlelight vigil was held outside of the Library at 8:30 p.m. where 14 candles were lit in memory of the 14 women who died at École Polytechnique and a moment of silence was held. The vigil was organized by Amanda Marini-Rohde Public Educator/Volunteer Coordinator at SASS. Statements were read in French and English as to why everyone had been asked to gather that evening. Poetry was also read as were excerpts of the book Milk and Honey. Go to www.cornwallseawaynews.com for the rest of this great story PLUS additional SN coverage.
