CORNWALL, Ontario – For the first time ever, Royal Lepage is hosting a Christmas House Tour event on Saturday, Dec. 8 in support of Baldwin House.

“There used to be one in Cornwall that finished up about eight years ago,” explained Karen Boulerice, spearhead of the event. “We resurrected it through Royal Lepage for Baldwin House.”

Six houses/establishments will deck their halls with boughs of holly, and other holiday décor, to get attendees into the holiday spirit and give them aesthetic design inspiration.

One featured establishment is Chesley’s Inn. “(The) houses are over decorated, inside and out for Christmas,” said Boulerice.

Tickets for the self-guided tour will cost $20 each and will include information about each featured location. Attendees can view each house in the order of their choosing between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

A Royal Lepage sales representative will host each location. Every house will have a different design and activities, including special draws, holiday music and appetizers.

“We hope to sell out with $500 tickets,” said Boulerice in regards to a fundraising goal.

Boulerice used to attend house tours with her closest friends as a ‘girls day out’ activity.

Tickets can be purchased at the Royal Lepage office at Pitt St. and Eighth St., or Serendipity Boutique on Second St. Royal Lepage is still currently looking for event sponsors.

Maison Baldwin House provides women and children with safe shelter and services, assisting in the transition from a violent and abusive circumstance to a safe and secure environment. Baldwin House is located on 40 Fourth St. and can be contacted at 613-938-2958.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Welch LLP welcomed friends and clients to the Nav Centre on Saturday, Nov. 17 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the firm and to help fight Cystic Fibrosis (CF).

“The primary reason for our event is to treat our clients and friends of the firm. We’re giving back to our clients and we wanted to give back to our community,” said Al Gravelle, Managing partner of the local office of Welch LLP. Guests of the event had an opportunity to buy mystery envelopes that contained prizes.

Proceeds from the sale of the envelopes went to the CF research and support, as did the sale of raffle tickets for prizes that were given out later

in the night and guests were encouraged to donate to the cause online.

One of the guests of the event was Myles Lynch. Lynch had worked at Welch LLP as a co-op student in high school. When he was just a few weeks old, Lynch was diagnosed with CF. He served as an ambassador for the cause of fighting CF at the event.

Over the course of his life, Lynch has already had two lung transplant surgeries and is eligible for a third, a first in Canada.

As soon as we step out the door, we trust that the car will start. We trust that the E-mail reservation got through. We trust that the hotel’s safe will be secure. We trust that during take-off our Boeing 767 will be in the air before it reaches the end of the runway – and that it will come to a gentle stop before the end of the runway when we land 3,500 km later.

When we travel it’s not only technology we have to place our trust in. It’s even more important that we trust the people we come into contact with. People seem to place their trust in me, especially when I’m hitchhiking.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Rachel’s Kids is organizing their first ever Suds & Sap fundraiser.

Taking place Jan. 11 and 12 at the Cornwall Civic Complex, Suds & Sap is a new fundraiser to support the work of Rachel’s Kids.

Rachel’s Kids is a local non-profit that receives no government funding and relies entirely on the generosity of donors and sponsors. Rachel’s Kids works to support children with autism and through the House of Hope they make the lives of kids sick with cancer a little easier anyway they can, whether it be through donating gas money to go to the hospital, or a gaming system to help end isolation.

Ticket prices for Suds & Sap are $60 for general admission, or $80 for VIP tickets. VIP ticketholders get to skip the line and also will have their own private area to enjoy their favourite suds and sap products. There are only 100 VIP tickets and they are expected to go fast.

“We wanted to hold a Canadian themed event,” said Rachel’s Kids Executive Director Kim Lauzon. “Winter is very Canadian and following that is maple syrup season. We wanted to go for a rustic Canadian theme. You can show up in jeans and that would be fine.”

Lauzon expects there to be 15 to 20 vendors at the show including larger breweries like Labatt and Molson. Labatt and Molson are also entering prizes for an early bird draw. Those who buy their tickets before Dec. 11 will be entered for a chance to win box seat tickets to

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) officially welcomed a new Chief of Police, Danny Aikman, and Deputy Chief of Police, Shawna Spowart, on Friday, Nov. 16 at Nav Canada. Local school boards fear rising student transportation costs Nick Seebruch

companies and the consortium that provides bus service to the school boards Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario (STEO).

STEO enacted boundary changes in Sept.

2018 to specifically deal with rising transportation costs. STEO changed the walking distance for students. Grade 7 and 8 students living 2km from their school or less are now not eligible for busing unless there is a courtesy seat available on a bus or if there is a safety issue around them walking to school. The old distance was 1.6km.

“The courtesy process has been refined in the face of rising transportation costs,” said Janet Murray, CAO of STEO in an interview with Seaway News in August. “We know that costs are escalating in the area of transportation… we are always mindful of doing our best to be as efficient as possible while doing our very very best to minimize the impact on students and families,” Murray went on to say.

The local school boards have been left feeling concerned over their need to cope with the rising costs.

“Trustees in the Upper Canada District School Board are quite concerned about the higher unexpected costs of transporting our

students to school,” stated Jeff McMillan, Chair of the UCDSB. Todd Lalonde, Chair of the CDSBEO said that his board is doing all it can to manage these costs.

“Both school boards have taken steps to manage transportation costs this year,” he said. “We are hearing from the public that we have gone as far as we can to cut costs in this area.”

McMillan promised that both boards would present a united front to the Ministry of Education.

“Given these sudden and troubling financial developments, both school boards are working collaboratively in seeking the guidance and support of the Ontario Ministry of Education.

These are unexpected circumstances,” said McMillan. “It has never been more important for us to work closely with the Minister of Education,

her office, and our local members of provincial parliament, since these costs will impact programs and services offered by both boards of education.”

This news could spell ongoing financial trouble for the UCDSB. In May, the board approved a budget deficit of $1.8 million for 2018-2019.

CORNWALL and UNITED COUNTIES of SD&G, Ontario - The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) has expressed concern over the rising cost of rural busing.

In a joint press release to the media, the UCDSB and their co-terminus English Language Catholic counterpart, the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) state that both school boards saw a deficit in their 2017-2018 budgets as a result of rising rural busing costs.

“The CDSBEO has posted its year-end financial statements that included an overspending in transportation for the fiscal year ending August 31, 2018 amounting to $5.8 million,” the UCDSB press release reads. “Trustees with the UCDSB also received a report about finances for the 2017-2018 budget year, presenting an overspending in transportation of $9.5 million related to unexpected increases in the cost to provide busing for students.”

FiRE anD EmERgEnCy sERviCEs South Stormont Fire and Rescue is urging everyone to keep fire safety in mind as the temperatures turn colder. Here are some simple things you can do to stay fire safe during the colder months: • Have heating appliances serviced and chimney flues examined for defects by a qualified person.

• Have fireplaces and fireplace dampers checked.

• Fireplaces should be equipped with an appropriate screen or glass enclosure to prevent sparks from flying out.

• Wood burning stoves should be examined by a qualified person, and the flue and chimney checked for creosote buildup. Creosote is a deposit from incomplete combustion that can build up in a chimney and can start a fire.

• Use only dry seasoned woods, and avoid soft woods like Pine, etc.

• Never use a flammable liquid to start a fireplace.

• Never overload the hearth with wood or artificial logs, the resulting fire may be too large for the unit.

• Put all ashes outdoors and away from the house in a metal container.

All of the 12 days of Christmas might be in December, but Cornwall kicked the Christmas season off right with a weekend of charity and fun.

The weekend began this past Saturday with the Santa Claus Breakfast. Terry Muir was an organizer of the event and he was also a driving force behind the Santa Claus parade that took place later in the day.

Terry told me that this was the biggest year ever for the Santa Claus Breakfast. I was there, and I think he was right. From the time the event began at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, until the time it ended around 10:30, the salons at the Civic Complex were packed parents and their kids who enjoyed a delicious bacon, egg and sausage breakfast and waited in line to meet Santa.

So many people showed up that throughout the morning the line-up for Santa spanned twothirds of the room.

Historically high turnouts were a theme throughout the day. Later I was at the Santa Street Hockey tournament organized by Robin McIntosh and Jeff McCullough, who told me that this year, the sixth year for the tournament, had seen the most teams and players they ever had.

The Santa Street Hockey tournament is a great day and a great opportunity for kids who might not get a chance to play sports.

Also, you never know what will happen at events like these. This year’s Santa Street Hockey tournament saw another first when nuns from the local Salesien Sisters of St. John de Bosco beat Robin and Jeff in a game.

Even that night, at St. Lawrence Secondary School, the Santa Claus Parade saw a huge surge of participation. There were 57 floats and other entrants in this year’s parade and despite the chilly weather, residents lined the whole route along Second St. to see members of their community celebrate Christmas and of course, to see Santa too.

Santa actually had a busy weekend. He was in Cornwall on Saturday night, then on Sunday, he was in North Glengarry for the Maxville parade.

Weekends like this show that there is plenty to do in Cornwall and the Counties and that there is a large amount of community participation, but more importantly, it shows that there are those willing to give time and money to organize these great events for the community and also those in need.

Let’s not forget, that an important part of the Christmas season is giving, and there were events to support community causes happening this past weekend as well.

Welch LLP turned 100 this year, and to celebrate they held a gala at the Nav Centre. The gala also raised money for Cystic Fibrosis. Before the event even started they had raised $8,500 and when all was said and done they had collected more than $11,000 to help fight this disease.

Out in the Counties, Roy & Cher’s Animal Rescue held their sixth annual Night of Live Music for the Animals. Roy & Cher has worked

hard to help animals in need and has taken the initiative in helping find a solution to Cornwall’s roaming cat problem.

If you want to do something truly in the Christmas spirit, then get involved in your community.

any acceptance of atheist beliefs as being in agreement with what the Church believes.

Claude mentions that the Moderator of the United Church (as he puts it, “the big cheese,” which is a good way to explain this position) asked for prayer for this minister and her congregation, which I believe is entirely appropriate. Claude omits that this call for prayer came at the end of the Moderator’s letter which states explicitly that as a Christian church, we continue to expect that our ministers will offer their leadership in accordance with our statements of faith. This follows a statement by The United Church of Canada that the resolution of this case does not alter in any way the Church’s belief in a God must fully revealed to us as

Christians in and through Jesus Christ. The Church’s statements of faith have all been grounded in this understanding.

Claude says that we should be praying for the United Church, which I appreciate. Please pray for us as we try to be faithful and loving followers of Jesus, and for all of the churches and faith traditions ministering to the people of the Seaway Valley.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR To the editor: I always enjoy reading Claude McIntosh’s column, and he fits a lot of material onto the page. His November 14 discussion of a United Church of Canada minister did not include important parts of the context which are necessary for readers to understand what is happening in this case.

People who attend United churches are at many different points on their faith journey, but clergy are held to a standard of being found to be in essential agreement with the Church’s statements of faith before they can be ordained or commissioned. As Claude noted, a minister in Toronto who professes to be an atheist was placed under review. He says that

she will continue to serve “with the blessing of the folks who call the shots,” but this is not the case. In the United Church, discipline of ministers is the responsibility of local jurisdictions, just as in Canada the federal government and the provinces have different areas of responsibility. Toronto Conference of the United Church was conducting the formal hearing into her ministry and then settled the case with her and her congregation, which does allow her to continue in ministry. Legal actions often end in settlement, so this hardly represents a “blessing” by any part of the Church; this resolution was not made by the national Church, does not affect any other minister or any other jurisdiction in the Church, and does not imply

THIS WEEK CIRCA 1970 Allan J. McDonald Ltd. signed a five-year contract with the city to operate the transit service, replacing long-time transit operator Cornwall Street Railway which gave up on the money-losing system that it its heyday carried four million passengers a year.

The contract called for the McDonald company, which operated the city’s garbage operation, to receive $11.25 per hour per bus. The first year was expected to cost taxpayers $40,000.

McDonald announced a new bus fare

schedule of 20 cents for adults and 15 cents for children and students.

The company said it would purchase 15 buses from Cornwall Street Railway and hire CSR drivers. * A hearing called to investigate the sinking of the Eastcliffe Hall in the St. Lawrence River just east of Morrisburg concluded that the captain, one of nine crew members who died in the earlymorning sinking, was the cause of the tragedy. In his 49-page report on the July 14 sinking Mr. Justice Francois Cevalier pointed out that Capt.

Richard Groulx was not only intoxicated and in no condition to be steering the vessel, but was “a blind man who did not know where he was or what he was doing.” The ship’s first mate was criticized for not taking steps to remove the captain from the helm. * Conservative MPP Osie Villeneuve got a rough ride during a meeting in Avonmore when he attempted to explain to residents why the ministry of education had turned down a request for a new high school in the Avonmore-Monkland area but gave the green light for a new high school in Cornwall.

The long-time MPP said studies by the ministry showed that the dwindling population in rural United Counties along with fewer dollars available for the education envelope did not justify a new school in North Stormont.

He said an enrolment of 1,000 would be needed and he doubted if a new school would be able to reach 500.

SD and G Public School Board officials said that a new school in North Stormont was their top priority. However, the ministry turned down the proposal, instead favouring a new school in Cornwall, which was the board listed as a lower priority.

It comes with neither significant recognition nor bragging rights, but for the record the new “dean” of city council is Elaine McDonald, who is about to start a fourth term.

This was pointed out by outgoing council “dean” Denis Carr, who is not returning, at least not in the next four-year term. Carr missed the 10th and final spot on council by five votes, thought to be the closest a candidate has come to sneaking in.

Many years back, city council had a “dean” and “senior dean”.

Well, sort of.

Angelo Lebano and Francis Guindon each had logged 25 years around the council table.

However, Lebano’s 25-year streak had been interrupted by an election defeat, followed by a comeback in the following election. Guindon had served 25 consecutive years, one of the longest winning streaks on record.

During a council meeting, soon after returning to council, Lebano rose and told his colleagues, “Well, as the dean of council I think ....”

When Lebano sat down, Guindon was quick to his feet to announce, “Well, as the senior dean ...”

Provided by the Cornwall Curling Club CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall Curling Club hosted the 2018 Senior Ladies Invitational Bonspiel on Tuesday Nov. 13. The twelve participating teams were from Alexandria, 2 teams

from Morrisburg, Lacolle Quebec, RA Ottawa, Lancaster, 2 teams from Vankleek Hill, Glenmore, Brownsburg, Russell, and Winchester. First place went to Alexandria and Glenmore took second place.

The Santa Street Hockey crew were having a great time down at the East End Station on Saturday, November 17. Pictured from left-to-right are Ronnie Dupuis, Jeff McCollough, Eugene Bergeron (who was declared by event organizers to be the Mayor of Le Village for the day) Robin McIntosh and Anne Bergeron. Robin, Jeff and Ronnie worked to help organize the event. Nick Seebruch CORNWALL, Ontario - The sixth annual Santa Street Hockey tournament hosted by the Le Village BIA saw their biggest year yet.

The tournament took place in Le Village on Montreal Rd. between McConnell and Baldwin avenues.

There were 38 teams participating with an average of four players per team.

It is a fun tournament every year, and each child that participates gets a medal and a gift bag that includes a free meal and tickets for Nativité Bowling.

“A lot of them don’t get a chance to do organized sports,” said event co-chair Robin

In addition to the usual teams that participate, there was also a fun game between the event co-chairs and the nuns from the near by Salesien Sisters of St. John de Bosco. The nuns came out victorious.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Ryan Mitchell, 22, of Cornwall was arrested on Nov. 18, 2018 and charged with the following: • Mischief under $5,000 • Theft under $5,000 • Breach of probation x three (for failing to report a change of address and failing to keep the peace) • Breach of undertaking x three (for failing to abide by curfew, failing to report a change of address, and failing to keep the peace) It is alleged during the early morning hours on Aug. 14, 2018, the man entered two apartment building laundry rooms and damaged washing machines in order to remove a quantity of money from the machines. On Nov. 18, 2018, police located the man in breach of his conditions. He was taken into custody, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing.

Glengarry (SD&G) Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers, with the assistance of OPP Canine Unit and SD&G Crime Unit, responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Circle K convenience store in the Village of Iroquois, South Dundas Township.

Investigation indicated two unknown suspects entered the store with a weapon and demanded cash. The suspects fled on foot in an unknown direction from the scene with a quantity of Canadian Currency and tobacco products.

No injuries resulted.

The suspects are described as follows; 1st- Male, wearing a green, plaid overall suit with a blue toque and an orange face mask.
