CORNWALL, Ontario – The second annual One Enchanted Evening Gala expected to draw 350 guests down the rabbit hole and into wonderland at Nav Centre on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 13.

With last year’s Great Gatsby themed event setting the bar high, many supporters of the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation (CCHF) event admitted that their expectations were exceeded this year. After entering the gala through a keyhole door, guests were immersed in a grand room with fluorescent mushrooms

“Every year we change the theme. We don’t want people to get bored, so it’s all about reinvention, enjoying and celebrating the good health of our community,” said Amy Gillespie, Executive Director of CCHF. Tickets to the high-end Halloween fundraiser were $95 and entitled guests to three drinks, dinner and other extra services such as palm readings. All guests were entered into a draw to win a key that would unlock a $4,000 ring from Pommier Jewellers. A 10 to 12-piece orchestra serenaded guests while they could gamble and participate in a silent auction.

“All proceeds that we get go to the urgent needs across the Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH),” said Gillespie. “Everything from upgrades

to our Chemotherapy Unit to keep that service here, to cardiac monitors, mammography (equipment); really, the list never ends.”

Last year, the CCHF was able to net $63,000 in funds raised. This year there was no fundraising goal but the hope of raising as much as possible. Gillespie said she doesn’t think people always consider how the hospital never closes, so people are encouraged to support the equipment that is not supplied by the government.

“I think that sometimes we think we are a small town but we can think big,” admitted Gillespie. “I think tonight is an articulation of how much care people have for each other and the community. We have such a giving and generous community that we at the Hospital Foundation truly feel thankful that people are here tonight supporting our hospital. I am excited for this year and many years to come.”

Gillespie thanked everyone who made the evening possible, especially the talents of artist

Richard Dancause who works at CCH. “We benefitted so much from people donating their time and things they were able to give us,” said Gillespie.

South Glengarry woman’s body found, OPP investigating as homicide Shawna O’Neill

SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario – At approximately 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, SDG OPP responded to the report of a body found in South Glengarry Township. The identity of the individual has been confirmed as 26-year-old Emilie Maheu.

OPP is now treating the disappearance investigation as a homicide.

Maheu was originally reported missing on Thursday, Oct. 11 from her residence on County Rd. 34. She was last seen leaving her work at approximately 1 p.m.

OPP say an autopsy will take place in the coming week in Ottawa.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Masked art supporters glided through the doors of the Ramada Inn on Saturday, Oct. 13 around 6 p.m. to celebrate the induction of 12 local artists into the Arts Hall of Fame.

Tickets to the masquerade evening were $65. Half of the value of each ticket will be contributed to the Cornwall Arts Centre.

“The idea of a Hall of Fame reminds us that we are building on the shoulders of others who have come before us,” said Rose Desnoyers, Co-Chair of the Centre for the Arts Collective.

John McMartin, who is also Co-Chair of the Centre for the Arts Collective, believes that the evening of celebration had been in the making for the last three years.

“We wanted to recognize as many people as possible over the next number of years who have contributed to the arts; (people) who have past and who are currently active artists,” he said.

“The opportunity arose in the last while for the artists to get the due recognition that has been longstanding coming. All of the arts, the various disciplines, are here and represented,” added McMartin.

According to Desnoyers, the five disciplines include music, theatre, literary arts, visual arts and dance. Desnoyers said that three years ago, five artists from the theatre were the first to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Reality

With all the natural disasters happening around the world it is difficult to imagine there are human beings who do not believe global warming is a reality. However, our Premier recently joined with Conservatives in Alberta to decry the federal government for being environmentally responsible. It is a travesty when the Premier declares - in his monotonic voice - he is doing this for the people of Ontario. Which people? Like the leader across the border, he is being untruthful.

Doug Ford has destroyed two major environmental provincial initiatives, the Cap & Trade program and the emission requirements for older vehicles. Significantly, the Premier and his

fellow deniers, after a reasonable length of time in office, have yet to come up with any semblance of programs that might address the difficulties brought about by global warming.

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has recently decreed unless governments take action the world our children will inherit may not be worth inheriting. As has often been the case, our federal government has shown leadership. The federal government, however, is not of the same political persuasion as the current provincial government and so, in the latter’s eyes, the federal government must be wrong. It matters not that all around us is evidence of devastation brought about by the global warming they deny exists.

Even at the federal level of government the major opposition party denies there is global warming.

The environmentally blind folk in our society - and in the United States - should wake up and

A city with a world of possibilities / Un monde de possibilités

look around. The forest fires, the floods in such cities as Toronto and many other communities across the nation are not figments of the imagination. Entire families are being devastated by the effects of global warming and our Premier must see his actions are hindering the desires of the people in Ontario. There is no way the citizens of this province are so self-centred they do not care about those in need - wherever they may live.

We were told, by the Premier, we would get lower gas prices as a result of his scrapping the Cap and Trade program. Where are those lower prices? Petroleum products, in Ontario, are no cheaper when measured against the prices in New York State. Of course, our Premier is just following the example provided by that smallminded leader south of our border. When fools operate from feelings of their own rather than through the findings of the scientists of the world then all we are left with is hope - the hope

we might soon replace them with more rational leaders.

Realistically, we cannot expect everyone to scrap the automobile they presently use because the replacement, the electric car program, has to be refined so the more environmentally friendly electric vehicles might be serviced with sufficient recharging stations.

Further, very few folk have the financial means to just abandon the car they own and change over to a non-polluting machine. Society must learn to walk before it breaks into a sprint.

We do, however, have a role to play. The power of the people can overcome the people of power and we must all spare a little time to ensure our elected Member of Parliament and the Member of Provincial Parliament are working in our interests, not simply following the ignorant blunderers who have no care for the needs of our children and grandchildren.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Approximately 120 players gathered at Optimist Park on Saturday, Oct. 13 to play slo-pitch in support of individuals with autism.

“We sold out the event relatively early with our first one (earlier this year), that’s why we set a second date,” said Paul Holland, Convener for the organization Slo-Pitch for Autism.

According to Holland, the organization held 50 tournaments across three provinces this year.

Teams could register for $325 and were also encouraged to fundraise. The tournament in Cornwall is limited to 10 teams as there are only two diamonds to utilize at the park. Of the 10 teams participating, many were from Cornwall, including Logan’s Pitches, Last Place Champions,

the Why Nots and Corny Rockets.

“To date as an organization, I believe that over $100,000 has been donated to families with autism,” said Holland.

Holland explained that registration fees often fund permit fees to use ball diamonds, equipment costs and umpires. All donations fundraised go towards families affected by autism. Each family receives $500 at the end of the year according to Holland, and each team is encouraged to represent one family.

Elizabeth Denis Dessureault Memorial Tournament results PHARMACY

CORNWALL, Ontario - The annual Elizabeth Denis Dessureault Tournament was recently held at the Benson Centre and raised $7,000 for Lung Cancer Canada.

In February 2017 Cornwall resident and cancer educator Elizabeth Denis Dessureault passed away from lung cancer. Her memory, and her cause continue however with the Elizabeth Denis Dessureault Memorial Hockey Tournament.

The goal of this annual tournament organized by Dave MacDonald and his wife Sue is to not only honour Elizabeth’s memory, but also to raise money to help fight the disease she died from.

In favour of balanced budgets, Proulx intends to scrutinize spending issues. He wants accountability on council and feels that taxes should not increase in the municipality. He believes that residents who don’t pay their taxes should be held accountable.

“Why is NG Council not acting on collecting these taxes by using the provincial tax collecting guidelines that state if you don’t pay your taxes for three years then the municipality has to right to sell the property?” said Proulx.

Proulx has also questioned how much was spent on engineer assessments for the water project and wants to know where the funding will come from.

Other platform points of Proulx’s include safeguarding local schools as he was a supporter of the Save Our Schools (SOS) movement.

Proulx believes the 20-year plan devised for social, economic and natural development of the municipality needs to be implemented. 2. I believe by making the attractions to the city like the Waterfront and Guindon Park more beautiful and pleasant, have more fun events as well as obtaining new businesses that cater to the young adults, we will get more people to stay in the city.

3. It is to our advantage to purchase the now federally owned properties in order to have control of what to do on our Waterfront. We should partner with the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne since they have attractions too to the city and can bring good ideas for our waterfront.

1. As a member of City Council I can propose motions at a council meeting(s) that can change the strategic direction of the city. Also, I can be the voice of concerned residents.

2. Our Economic Development Strategic Plan has various ways to attract young, and older, workers to our community. Currently, there is a shortage of young and older workers in our community and that is causing problems in attracting developers to come to Cornwall.

This is a very difficult question to answer with specific actions.

3. One of my goals in this term of council is to once again start discussions with the Federal Government on the acquisition of the waterfront lands. The main purpose of acquiring the waterfront lands is to give control of the future development on this land to the residents. My plan is to acquire the lands with minimal or no cost to the residents.

1. As a Councillor, I would be in a position where I would have the most direct impact on people’s everyday lives than as a private citizen.

This means I could affect and influence many opportunities to strengthen the community as a whole. I have no self or special interests, just a sincere will to offer my services to all citizens.

2. By revitalizing our neighbourhoods and infrastructure by investing in parks and rec facilities, and streets, to make the city more attractive to young professionals.

3. The City and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne should be collaborating in the spirit of cooperation to achieve the best possible deal for both communities in order to deliver the best possible waterfront for its citizens and to maximize the public benefits of employment, increased visitor spending, increased tax revenues and public and private sector investment.

1. As a member of council, I can vote on issues (citizens can’t). Table some motions (citizens can’t). Act/represent the City in an official capacity (Citizens can’t) just to name a few.

2. As a (part-time) teacher at St-Lawrence college, I have seen too many young people leaving Cornwall. Let’s make sure that the post secondary education that is offered can be reflective of the needs and demands of this community. We need to keep our parks, public pools/splash pads and recreations to high standards. If you want to bring in companies (that will bring in people), the one question that always comes up is “What does the city had to offer for my employees in their spare time?”

3. We absolutely need to look into this- the M.C.A. (Akwesane) should also be part of discussions on possibly joint partnership/ventures with Cornwall.

1. Implement. I sat on the waterfront committee for 3 years and very little got done with ideas coming forward. It takes councillors that can move things through city hall in order to get them done, and that will be a priority as a councillor.

2. I think we need to start with looking to attract remote workers from tech companies in Montreal and Ottawa. The cost of living being so much lower here, the quality of life being so much higher, and remote workers are becoming a larger percentage of the workforce.

1. I feel that I have a lot of passion and ideas of the efficiencies we can create using data and technology but unless I’m in a position of putting a motion forward, I feel that I can’t make as big an impact as a private citizen. Which is why I’m running.

Make sure that we have just the kind of jobs they are looking for when they graduate and find ways to motivate them to move back or consider Cornwall. We need to create higher paying jobs of the future to compete with the tech sector.

3. Most definitely, I think we should purchase the land but in partnership with Akwesasne. It’s been a part of our community for so long, we can’t miss the opportunity to officially call it our own.

1. City Council has absolute Control of the budget affecting taxes. Council is responsible for, the safety of its citizens, potable water, and a multitude of services. Councils lobby senior governments at conferences such as A.M.O. to present their needs. They effect also changes to rules and regulations through by-laws.

Councillors are responsible for maintaining and keeping infrastructure up to date.

2. Many small cities attract millennials through higher learning institutes.Young people are eager to relocate for quality of life as well as job prospects and affordable housing prospects. The City of Cornwall Economic Department along with Councils support should be launching initiatives to secure employers who have a demand for workers with post secondary qualifications. Cornwall should be looking to become a hub for technology and education.

3. The question of purchasing the waterfront is debatable, given that those lands were expropriated for the O.P.G., dam and Seaway projects. To my knowledge, there was no compensation ever received by the Cornwall as opposed to the millions received on the south side of the river. It is my opinion that both our Federal Representative and our Provincial Representative request that the land be returned to Cornwall.

1. As a councillor I can push difficult conversations forward that I simply can’t get traction on as a private citizen. It is one of the main differences between myself and most other candidates, as a war veteran I have faced life threatening situations head on. As a councillor, I will not fear bringing difficult files forward that other councillors would shy away from.

2. I think that by developing Cornwall’s waterfront which would offer an increased nightlife and increased shopping and then fixing our canal and making it more accessible for activities like swimming, canoeing and skating in the winter would be a huge step forward in bringing a young workforce into Cornwall. This would help attract bringing a University to Cornwall 3. I am in favour of purchasing the entire Waterfront starting with the Domtar property.

The Domtar property with it’s location on a busy international border, on prime waterfront land with 401 access is the key to making Cornwall a destination city. This will also allow us to keep certain parts of the Waterfront green that our residents cherish.

As a private citizen working with the Social Development Council of Cornwall , I focused on building a healthier, more vibrant community by addressing employment, food accessibility and poverty reduction, community supports, and socio/economic development. I found myself limited to what I could do to advance these goals.

I would work to ensure that Cornwall is able to attract a young workforce by establishing things that appeal to young families: affordable housing, strong social-services, sound community infrastructure, attractive arts/culture and fiscal responsibility. It is equally important that we work to attract businesses/employment opportunities for young adults returning after completing their education/training.

3. I am in favour of creating incentive programs for a combination of public/private businesses. That said, these programs must align with the input from Cornwall residents regarding waterfront development. This type of setup would allow for the City to have significant influence on the development while also reducing spending.

1. A member of council has a seat at the table, an opportunity to lead the debate, to influence the direction and the actions of Council. A private citizen does not have the level of influence he gets to view the parade not lead it. An individual member of Council can Council to a new and unplanned direction.

2. To attract a young workforce Cornwall City Council needs to provide the economic situation which will foster growth. Good infrastructure, helpful city staff, competitive taxes, vibrant art and recreational programs and educational opportunities are needed to encourage entrepreneurs to set up shop in Cornwall. Foster growth and we will retain our youth.

3. I am in favour of negotiating the transfer of all of these lands from the Government of Canada to the City of Cornwall at no cost to the ratepayer. For more than a century Cornwall was deprived of its waterfront to meet national transportation goals. Canada needs to recognize the sacrifice that Cornwall made and return all of these lands to Cornwall.

Justin Towndale 1. As Councillors we have an impact on the day to day lives of the residents of the City. We can effect meaningful change to improve our community by making projects, policies, or initiatives happen.

2. There’s a two fold approach in order to achieve this. We need high skilled jobs and we need attractive neighbourhoods. The jobs will attract new residents and by having liveable neighbourhoods, people will move to the city.

We need new residents to look at a neighbourhoods and say “I can live there”. This includes improvements to parks and infrastructure.

3. Yes. I am. While this would potentially be a major investment, it would give us direct control over the development of the waterfront.

Right now, we have to purchase at least a few pieces, such as Lamoureux Park. Other pieces have existing lease agreements, which would provide revenue for the city.

1. It is a partnership: every four years voters have the power to “hire” or “fire” city councillors.

City councillors are the decision/policy makers who make decisions and set policies by listening to the public and arming themselves with facts and reasoned opinions.

2. The city can’t attract a “young” workforce but it can do things to attract companies that require a “young” workforce.

3. I’m in favour of purchasing the waterfront from Pointe Maligne (we own the harbour lands that will be cleaned up) to just west of the RCAFA Wing. We already have a consultant’s study that was approved for the redevelopment of Pointe Maligne. Government grants may be available. Taking ownership of the waterfront (we own Lamoureux Park) will keep the waterfront and access to the river for the citizens and out of the hands of developers.

When in favor of a project, we decide what the priorities are, decide how to fund, and timelines for completion. Budgeting capital projects from one year to the next to maintain proper infrastructure, & look for creative ways to find alternate revenue sources.

2. Continuing to offer and expand on services that are important to young families looking for a place to live ( schools, sports facilities, arts and culture facilities, recreational activities, affordable housing, and job opportunities.

Create an environment that is attractive to new business (tax levels, infrastructure support, and a skilled workforce). People won’t come here for a job only, they need their families to thrive in a city outside of the work place and school.

3. Council needs to do everything fiscally possible to obtain all of the available waterfront lands. This way we can ensure that private interests don’t load up all the waterfront space with condos and commercial enterprise. We can protect our open park spaces, and direct housing and commercial development to the areas already approved by the Waterfront Plan.

It’s pretty obvious to me that if the Province has allowed private marijuana vendors in municipalities, then in my mind I would have no choice but to agree to allow it as well.

Private business should be able to benefit from the proceeds like any other business would. God knows, small businesses need all the help they can get.

Further, I suspect other municipalities around us will agree to allow private marijuana vendors. Therefore, why would we choose to opt out?

I’m in favour of having private marijuana vendors. If we opt-out, we will lose out on the economic benefit. We do not need to rush into this decision however, we must first consult with residents, and see how other communities roll this out before deciding what’s best for our municipality.

The Water Service is just covering the cost to provide the service, therefor the reserves required to update the system are not being collected. Glen Walter will require a new pumping system, a million dollars investment. Unfortunately past councils have overlooked the required reserves. I feel the increase is extreme, there should be a revisit to the decision.

The province is pushing harder and harder for municipalities to have asset management plans, for replacement in place. This includes water and Sewer Systems. The rate increases will put us where we need to be, for future replacement of the systems, according to the staff report presented to council. I stand by my decision.

The new water & sewer fees were determined incorporating predicted system maintenance, repairs and upgrade forecasts. This strategic plan is demanded by the Province.

Based on the projections, the new fees are justifiable. Any change to the rates can only be determined by a majority vote of council.

Communities were recently hit with water tax ‘reserve’ increases 12% to 50%, and more next years. Our tri-monthly water bills cover operations, somehow, Administration/Council present, had not building “reserves’ for over 10 years. In violation of a 2008 consultant’s report they advise, that there are NO guidelines/rules as to reserves. There should be. If elected I’ll motion to return to 2-5% maximum, and find other funding, to reduce the impact, especially fixed incomes.

The province has just recently given us some very vague information regarding retail outlets and the regulations that pertain to them are still unknown. We don’t know what the consequences and/or benefits are of opting in or opting out. We require more information and input from our constituents to make an informed decision.

This edition of Seaway News is the last one before the municipal election on Oct. 22. I want to take this time to recap the issues and above all encourage readers to get out and vote.

Someone said to me the other day, that they don’t believe that there has been one central issue that has defined this campaign. I agree with that. There is not just one issue, but there have been several that make this election unique.

They day this paper is delivered by the printers, Oct. 17, is the day that marijuana becomes legal in Canada. This is an issue that will affect all municipalities, not just Cornwall, but like all other municipalities, Cornwall will have a choice to make, whether to “opt-in” and allow private vendors to sell marijuana, or “opt-out” and wait and see.

In Cornwall, three of our mayoral candidates have stated that they’re in favour of opting in right away, while only incumbent Leslie O’Shaughnessy has said he is in favour of waiting to see and opting in at a later date if it suits the municipality.

I don’t think that Mayor O’Shaughnessy is necessarily wrong on this. Even with legalization happening this week, many details are still up in the air, for instance, it was only recently revealed that marijuana would be regulated under the tobacco laws and not the liquor laws.

I do however think that Cornwall must and will allow private marijuana vendors eventually. No matter what happens, residents of Cornwall will still be able to buy marijuana through the

province’s online store, and if our neighbours allow private vendors, then we are sending tax revenue out of our municipality.

The waterfront, while always a present issue for Cornwall, is a little bit more pressing in this election than it has been in the past. The federal government seems more willing than ever to divest itself of it’s waterfront holdings in Cornwall and even said as much earlier this year.

The question now is, what should Cornwall do with them? Do we buy the lands at great cost?

Do we allow developers to take it over and do what they want?

Mayor O’Shaughnessy stated at the Chamber of Commerce debate that he believed that Cornwall’s by-laws would help ensure that Cornwall did have a say in what goes up on the waterfront, if and when it is sold. I think that’s true too, but only to an extent. The only real guarantee is if Cornwall acquired the waterfront, or at least the areas of the waterfront that the City is interested in.

Bernadette Clement is right when she says that the acquisition of these lands by the federal government to create the St. Lawrence Seaway should be taken into account. That Cornwall is owed something for the impact the creation of the Seaway is an argument that can be made.

David Murphy’s advocation of a lease-toown model for Cornwall for the waterfront lands is something that I believe would be an elegant solution to this problem, if it is something that the federal government would even consider.

The final topic that I have heard emerge in this election is attracting a young workforce to Cornwall. This one has emerged recently. Even

two or three months ago, I don’t think anyone was talking about workforce, but now it is something that all candidates are addressing.

I think this is an important issue that deserves to be near the forefront of the public’s mind in this election. The City of Cornwall has worked hard to attract new jobs to the city and new employers like Xplornet and Leclerc, but now the focus needs to shift in order to fill those jobs.

Cornwall’s major employer, Walmart Logistics, was looking to fill 150 positions at the recent job fair that was held two weeks ago.

Olymel has been looking into a program where they would bus in employees from Montreal to meet their needs. Clearly, this is an important issue. In order to keep these employers here, we have to ensure that Cornwall has a young workforce that is ready to support them. Cornwall’s Economic Development Department has

already begun to take steps to help address the issue with attending a job fair in Montreal this past weekend and making inquiries in areas like New Brunswick, where unemployment is high.

All mayoral candidates said that they would provide the Economic Development Department with the support that they need to help them fill these jobs, but what does that support look like? In my opinion, maybe the City of Cornwall can setup a financial incentive for residents to come to Cornwall and work here.

Maybe a program when a current local employee convinces a friend to take a job here? Say $25? Then another $25 if they are still working that job in a year.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Legalization day is almost upon Canadians. On Wednesday, Oct. 17, the use of recreational marijuana will be legal for several citizens, making history in our country.

Cannabis was added to the schedule of banned substances in 1923 without any parliamentary or public debate. Following pushback from the Senate and criticism from many, Bill C-45 hazily progressed from its introduction on April 13, 2017, fulfilling one of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s campaign promises.

Provincially, the ON Government signed supply agreements with licensed cannabis producers to sell their products through the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) online. This wholesale distribution network is set to supply cannabis to legal private stores upon ironing out legislative requirements by April 1, 2019.

The OCS online store will open on Oct. 17 and orders can be shipped within two to three business days.

The Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) are releasing facts and information to consider in a #CountdownToCannabis series to help inform the community.

The following is a quick breakdown of what is known and what can be expected for our province: The minimum age in Ontario to legally buy, use, possess and grow recreational cannabis is 19. This coincides with the minimum age for alcohol and tobacco sales.

An individual can possess a maximum of 30 grams of cannabis in public.

The only legal place to purchase cannabis as of Oct. 17 is the OCS online.

A business plan is a recognized management tool used by successful and/or prospective businesses of all sizes to document business objectives and to propose how these objectives will be attained within a specific period of time.

It is a written document which describes who you are, what you plan to achieve, where your business will be located, when you expect to get under way, and how you will overcome the risks involved and provide the returns anticipated.

Why do you Need a Business Plan?

A business plan will provide information of your proposed venture to lenders, investors, and suppliers to demonstrate how you plan to use their money, and to establish a basis for credibility of your project.

When Should a Business Plan be Prepared?

The sooner you develop your business plan, the better. You will find that the final copy of your business plan may differ from the original draft, as you will be updating, revising and refining it as you go. It is important that you examine all the relevant factors now. Therefore, you will be able to anticipate any surprises after your business has opened its doors.

Who Should Prepare a Business Plan?

The business plan should be prepared by those persons who will be implementing it.

Outside assistance from consultants, accountants, bookkeepers, and experienced business

people can definitely help, but you must draft the initial plan. After all, you are the one that is going to run the business once it is open. Think through each element of your business plan thoroughly so you have a good understanding of the overall picture and all of the details.

Present your plan to others for constructive criticism and advice, and try to profit from their experience. Modify your plan if necessary.

And the first step in developing a marketing plan is to understand who your target customers are and what they want from your company.

A good way to gain a better understanding of your customers is to conduct a survey about your products or services. If you can’t afford to hire a research company, do it yourself by creating a short questionnaire and recruiting existing and prospective customers to participate.

2. Pamper your existing customers: It’s typically five times as expensive to make a sale to a new customer as it is to an existing one. So make sure you’re not neglecting the people who already know and trust you.

Consider, for example, taking your best customers out to dinner or golf and using the opportunity to ask them about how to improve your business.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Local breast cancer survivor shares story, spreads awareness CORNWALL, Ontario – Over the last seven years, Carol Johnston’s strength has been proven immensely. After numerous surgeries and chemotherapy treatments, she has been in remission since 2016 and on the road to recovery since her last surgery in 2017.

Johnston survived a motor vehicle accident, breast cancer, ovarian cancer and illness caused by breast implants.

Each challenge appeared along her journey starting in 2011 when a car failed to stop at a stop sign, colliding into her and her husband on their motorcycle. Thrown 20 ft. in the air, Johnston was lucky to survive.

Due to mobility issues caused by the accident, Johnston was forced to shut down her cleaning business. She wanted to remain productive, so she attended college in Ottawa to become a lab technician. With her newfound medical knowledge, Johnston recognized during her practical placement that she was becoming acutely ill.

In November of 2014, Johnston was diagnosed with an aggressive stage two, triple negative invasive ductal carcinoma.

She underwent six chemotherapy treatments after a single mastectomy.

During a prophylactic ovary and breast removal surgery in 2015, cancer was found in the Johnston’s right ovary. Doctor’s encouraged her to take six more rounds of chemotherapy, but she believed she wouldn’t survive as her blood levels indicated poor liver and kidney functions.

“Sick, I was so so sick,” said Johnston.

After finishing her fourth treatment of her second round, Johnston successfully rang the chemotherapy ward bell of completion. She vividly remembers the moment of triumph to this day.

Johnston watched her sister fight and pass away from breast cancer in 2001. She knew she needed to approach everything with a positive attitude to be successful.

“I am no longer scared of dying. I live every day to the fullest,” she said.

Although fear was present at the beginning, the love and support from family and friends pushed Johnston to face her fears. If she were ever panicking, her husband would comfort her and joke, ‘Don’t worry, you’re safe; I put a force field around the room.’

“It was difficult to put on that happy face so people wouldn’t worry about me,” said Johnston.

“No matter how difficult things were, we just pushed through,” she added.

During her first round of chemotherapy, Johnston held a party in which 25 of her friends, family members and neighbours shaved their heads in her honour. Her mother even shaved her head twice, during

both rounds.

“It was really nice to have that support.

It was very touching. I get chocked up…” said Johnston.

Unfortunately, Johnston’s challenges didn’t stop when chemotherapy ended. The hardest part of her journey was struggling with illness caused by breast implants.

Johnston was offered implants by the team of doctors in Ottawa who performed her surgeries, but she began to feel an extensive number of autoimmune symptoms following her second implant in 2015, including burning, inexplicable pain, memory loss and extreme fatigue, only to name a few.

She had never felt worse.

“I wasn’t completely informed about the risks (with implants) so I wasn’t able to make a fully informed decision,” said Johnston.

Due to various circumstances, approximately 20 plastic surgeons in Canada told Johnston they would not perform a complete capsulectomy on her. With failing health, Johnston made the decision to venture to Costa Rica in 2017 to receive the implant removal surgery she desperately needed, from a world-renowned surgeon.

Johnston felt better within days, but unfortunately suffered an infection following the surgery.

Now, Johnston is running, eating healthy and sharing her story. She is proud to be working again and recently started a job at the Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH). She is using her social media to advocate for breast implant illness awareness and encourages survivors to make informed decisions about implants.

John McDermott Trio coming to Cornwall CORNWALL, Ontario – The John McDermott Trio is returning to Cornwall on Friday, Oct. 26 at Aultsville Theatre as a part of his 25th anniversary tour.

John McDermott got his start in the music industry after recording an album for his parent’s wedding anniversary. That album got into the hands of EMI, it caught fire and as they say, the rest is history.

McDermott says that he has many treasured memories of the past 25 years, including playing with acts like The Chieftains, which was the first band that he opened for, and the Irish Tenors.

McDermott explained that his crew around him have helped keep things fresh after all these years, he especially points to his keyboardist Mike and his Music Director Jason

Fowler.

He said that he has really enjoyed returning to towns that he has played in many times over the years.

“We’ve been going back to the places we’ve been over the past 25 years,” he said. “It is great to go back to a place where they know you.”

His show is a mix of new and old.

“We’ve just finished two new recordings and there is some really good new stuff,” said McDermott. “But I know I’m not going to be able to walk out of the hall without doing Danny Bhoy or Voyages.”

McDermott said he has fond memories of Cornwall.

“Cornwall stands out because Aultsville is a nice hall it is the hometown of Terry McRae, my promoter,” he said. “Bring the kids out with you.

It’ll be a great show.”

SOUTH STORMONT, Ontario – This summer and fall season has seen unusually low waterlevels along the St. Lawrence River. This has lead to complaints with the International Joint Commission (IJC) over their management of this shared asset with the United States.

Ault Island resident Clifford Steinburg wants to ensure that real action is taken to address the concerns of those living along the St. Lawrence River in South Stormont and South Dundas.

“Our first step is to present to the River Board,” Steinburg said. “We need to explain the impact to the region.”

Steinburg explained that Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Adaptive Management (GLAM) is a technical advisory board to the IJC who will have to be convinced of the problem, and the solution and that they then will push the IJC to act.

“This has been an extreme year,” said Steinburg. “I’ve been here since 2001 and I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Steinburg explained that just a few weeks ago, he had to go out into the river to help a family whose new boat had been wrecked on rocks sticking out of the low water level.

Steinburg pointed out into the St. Lawrence river at what looked like rocks and tree stumps

poking out of the water and explained that this was were the foundations of old Aultsville lay.

Aultsville is one of the Lost Villages that was flooded when the St. Lawrence Seaway opened 65 years ago.

“What the IJC plan 2014 program doesn’t know are these exposed foundations and tree stumps,” Steinburg said, he went on to warn that these low water levels could seriously affect business and safety in the region.

“The risk to this area is not just shipping and not just tourism, it’s investment,” he said. “What if an oil ship gets punctured? It could be a disaster and that’s the point I’ve tried to get across to the IJC.”

“One of the messages that we try to convey to people is that, we live in a rather immense property with many gardens and a greenhouse…but people don’t have to do it at that scale…you can have a much smaller space and grow a lot of stuff,” explained Bill. Bill had shown a number of attendees how he grew three apple trees in a 122 ft. space, proving that small patches can produce considerable crops.

Karen explained that they often have a surplus of crops as they produce food year-round with the help of their greenhouse, so they will often donate to local food banks.

The Carriere’s began planting what they consider more productive plants about a decade ago when they discontinued their perennial

plant business of 20 years, Centre Commons Perennials.

Over their decade of research and experimenting, the couple has also discovered different sustainable cooking products like a Sun Oven and solar dehydrators. These products make the couple think of areas of the world that may be without power as they could be a viable for utilizing more natural cooking methods.

“We are trying to think about adding resiliencey to households and communities,” said Karen.

The Carriere’s are eternally thankful for the support they received from volunteers and attendees.

“A lot of planning went on. We are very grateful that people think this is important enough to put their time into,” said Karen.

Steinburg has found an ally in South Stormont Mayoral candidate Bryan McGillis, saying that this is not an issue that only affects water front residents, but everyone in South Stormont.

“I’ve wanted to do this since I saw the low levels of water in the St. Lawrence River,” said McGillis. “As a municipality, this is going to have an impact on us too. If property values go down, it will affect our tax base.”

Steinburg said that he also has support from the other side of the river on Wilson Hill Island.

“An important tool for us is we have the Americans on our side,” he said. “We’re in constant communication.”

SOUTH STORMONT, Ontario – Over 100 people attended the property of Bill and Karen Carriere of Transition Cornwall+ Food Action Group on Sunday, Oct.14 in honour of World Food Day on Oct. 16.

The free day included activities for the whole family, involving sustainable food production on a local and global level. Children could make clay masks and bird feeders while adults could enjoy a number of demonstrations, such as cider pressing, hands-on harvesting, food preservation methods and more. Guided and self-guided tours of the property were also available, in which participants could identify different nut trees, berries in the orchard and trees in the

Gala de reconnaissance du CSDCEO Communiqué de presse de la CSDCEO ONTARIO - C’est le 13 octobre dernier que le Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est ontarien (CSDCEO), en partenariat avec les syndicats et les associations, a honoré les membres de son personnel qui prenaient leur retraite et ceux et celles qui ont atteint 25 ans de service.

Dans le cadre de cette soirée de reconnaissance nommée « MERCI », le CSDCEO a souligné le départ à la retraite de 57 personnes et les 25 années de service de 23 membres du personnel.

Cela représente des centaines d’années d’expérience au cours desquelles ces membres du personnel ont donné le meilleur d’euxmêmes pour que les élèves des écoles catholiques de langue française du CSDCEO reçoivent un enseignement et des services de qualité. « Chaque membre du personnel du CSDCEO contribue à la réussite des élèves. Il est

important pour moi et pour le CSDCEO de reconnaître ces personnes et de leur dire merci.

C’est grâce à eux que les élèves du CSDCEO ont le plus haut taux de diplomation de la région. », de partager M. François Turpin, directeur de l’éducation et secrétaire.

auprès de la CNS dans le cadre du programme 50 millions d’arbres, offert en partenariat par la CNS et Forest Ontario. Le programme fournit de jeunes plants, la plantation et la préparation du site, au prix de 0,20 $ par arbre pour les conifères, et de 0,50 $ par arbre pour les feuillus.

Les résidents peuvent également acheter des arbres en vente libre directement auprès de la CNS; un minimum de 100 plants en multiples de 50 par espèce peut être commandé. L’érable rouge, le sapin baumier, le pin blanc et le pin rouge ne sont que quelques-unes des nombreuses espèces disponibles. Le prix par plant peut être aussi bas que 0,58 $ selon les espèces.

Les arbres en vente libre sont d’origine locale et constituent un stock indigène en Ontario. Les commandes seront acceptées jusqu’au 1er février 2019. Les résidents sont encouragés à passer leurs commandes au plus tôt car les quantités sont limitées.

En août, la CNS a publié un rapport intitulé « Protéger et augmenter la couverture forestière sur le territoire de compétence de la Conservation de la Nation Sud », dans lequel étaient décrites des recommandations pour l’avenir, notamment l’amélioration des services de plantation d’arbres de l’Office de protection de la nature. Parmi ces améliorations, citons une nouvelle subvention offerte par la CNS pour des plantations d’arbres d’un acre situées en zones riveraines (le long des cours d’eau) ou pour des plantations servant de brise-vent (le long des champs). La plantation d’arbres riverains protège la qualité de l’eau en agissant comme filtre organique entre la terre et l’eau, tandis que la plantation d’un brise-vent réduit les effets du vent, procurant un abri et protégeant le sol de l’érosion.

Suu Kyi stripped of her honorary citizenship Sultan Jessa

It has finally happened.

A few weeks ago, I wrote a column asking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Liberal government to revoke the honorary Canadian citizenship granted to Myanmar’s leader. Shortly after saying it was for the House of Commons to take this action, the unexpected happened. This is the first time Ottawa has decided to revoke the honorary citizen presented to Aung San Suu Kyi, the

leader of Myanmar. The international community had expressed horror following ethnic cleansing in that Asian country formerly known as Burma.

Canada did the right and the proper thing. It has sent a strong message to the international community. Soon after the motion was passed in the House of Commons, it went to the Senate for final approval.

Suu Kyi remained silent and did not accept the blame over genocide of helpless Rohingya Muslims. Trudeau had asked a prominent Liberal Bob Rae, also a former Ontario premier, to look into great details about the Rohingya crisis.

Ray was frank about the crisis. He pointed out politicians in Myanmar should be investigated by

International Criminal Court of Justice over possible war crimes.

“Whoever is found responsible, whether in the civilian government or the military government, for what has happened should be responsible. I don’t exclude anybody from that,” Rae said.

More than 900,000 Muslims fled to Bangladesh to escape a brutal campaign by Myanmar’s military. The civilian Myanmar leader became the first leader to be stripped on honorary citizenship for her role in gross human rights violations against Muslims. The de facto leader Suu Kyi has been widely criticized for not speaking out against the atrocities committed against the Rohingya.

This crisis has not been settled. Bangladesh,

with its limited resource, has become home for thousands of refugees.

To this day, they still trek to Bangladesh to escape being killed or burned alive.

Senator Ratna Omidvar said revoking honory citizenship will send a message to the world that Canada meant business.

This, she added, was a symbolic message. Suu Kyi failed to use her power or moral authority to stem or prevent the genocide.

Today, there are five living and dead individuals with honorary Canadian citizenship.

Canada’s former Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird travelled to Myanmar in 2012 to present the honorary citizenship to Suu Kyi.
