Racing beds in Cornwall’s downtown Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - The third annual Lion’s Club Bed Race took to the streets on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018. Taking place along Pitt St. between First and Second streets, around 20 beds raced to raise money for a good cause, and also for some big prizes. “All money raised will stay in the community,” said Kibby Lutz of the Lions Club of Cornwall. Over the past three years the event has raised over $12,000. There were two divisions this year, a student
division, and a business division. Over a dozen businesses sponsored beds in this year’s race. After the event wrapped up, the students who participated were treated to a meal at the Knights of Columbus club house on Amelia St. Later in the evening, the Knight of Columbus clubhouse also hosted a comedy show for ticketholders and sponsors. Lutz said that the event is a unique attraction. “I think there is a real novelty to it,” he said. “You don’t see it very often. We turn the whole street into a big party.”

Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers awarded to local student Shawna O’Neill shawna.oneill@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Ashleigh Latreille of South Stormont was presented with the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers on Wednesday, Sept. 26. “When they called me and told me I was in shock,” said Latreille. “When I looked up the award, (I noticed) it was all older people who had won it, and apparently I was one of the youngest people to win it. It was such an honour to receive it…a once in a lifetime opportunity.” The 17-year-old, St. Joseph’s Catholic School student has volunteered for different organizations over the last decade. She has spent a multitude of hours volunteering with Me to We, previously known as Free the Children. Latreille has also collected and fundraised for local foodbanks and charities, sold her own baked goods and bath bombs for fundraising efforts and has volunteered with her high school. In 2016, Latreille travelled to the village of

She helped to build school classrooms and assisted with making Rafiki bracelets, which are sold to provide income for families. “Travelling to Africa is by far my most memorable volunteer experience and I encourage everyone to step out of their comfort zone and travel to a country like Kenya,” said Latreille. “Seeing their faces after helping them really makes you feel great about everything you are doing.” Latreille was presented with the medal before the South Stormont council meeting on Sept. 26. As part of the Canadian Honours System, the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers recognizes outstanding volunteer achievements in various fields, to individuals who better the lives of people in their own community and abroad. “This recognition is a testament to her tireless efforts to improve the lives of others, and we are very proud of this young woman’s commitment to these efforts,” said Jim Bancroft, Mayor of South Stormont.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Agapè Centre is asking the public to please respect its rules around dropping off items for their store. The centre shared a photo of what is unfortunately a typical sight for them on Monday morning, drop off boxes being trashed in their parking lot as well as used mattresses and other refuse. “This happens every weekend,” said Johanne Couture, Executive Director of the Agapè Centre. “There are garage sales and when they’re done they take their leftover stuff and bring it here.” Couture said that some individuals are not aware that they do not accept certain items. “There are mattresses every Monday and we don’t take mattresses. We take clothing, small furniture and home wear,” she said. “The ideal way to drop something off would be to come to our loading dock during open hours.” She explained that their loading dock is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day, except Thursdays when it is open until 7 p.m. and Saturday, when it is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. During regular business hours, there will be someone working at the dock who will help accept items for drop

Seaway News Mayoral Debate 2018 Nick Seebruch
nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - On Thursday, Sept. 27, Cornwall Seaway News held a live debate on Facebook with three of Cornwall’s mayoral candidates. Incumbent Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy, Councillor David Murphy and Councillor Bernadette Clement introduced themselves to our audience, answered prepared questions as well as questions from social media. Below are some of the questions that our viewers asked the candidates during the debate. See our Facebook page to watch the debate at any time. Janet Fradette asked: Cornwall Transit needs expanded service to the industrial area to accommodate late night shifts. Is this something that can be considered? Amanda Forget said: We need to cleanup our east end and downtown waterfronts, offer some kind of attraction to bring in outsiders. be known for something! Offer tax breaks to tech companies and kickstarts etc. Brian Lessard asked: Can the
candidates comment on the need for wards in the city, identifiable local representation, as highlighted in the recent Seaway News? Allison St. Louis asked: Do you feel that the BMO building was a wise purchase and that it is ultimately the city’s best option for an Arts & Culture Centre? Nicholas MacNaughty asked: Do you believe the Mayoral role deserves full time commitment? Michelle Allinotte asked: How will the male candidates who are parents balance their duties to their children and their family with the job of mayor? That is the question a female candidate with children would be asked. John Racine said: I would love to see police checks done at no charge for those volunteering like most communities. This would help increase our number of volunteers which will help support the community even more. Gerry Samson asked: What accomplishments has been done by this council in last four years? To all three! What haven’t you claimed north shore of waterfront and get rid of tanks?
Mike Turcotte asked: How did the candidates really have money to blow? Then perhaps convote on the tax increases? were they aware of how tinue with another $100,000 for the rusting train it effected business with such an increase. Ellery Lafave running for Deputy Mayor of South Glengarry Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
Lafave has 20 years of experience as a selfemployed business man in the financial industry and has served on the South Glengarry Economic Development committee for the past six years. “As Deputy-Major, I like to think I could give a non-biased vision to bring to a better understanding and solve some of these issues for the people of South Glengarry,” he said. Lafave said that relationships with neighbouring municipalities would be at the forefront of his mind as a Deputy Mayor. “Being the largest municipality of the United
Counties it is imperative that our vision is clearly understood,” he said. “The three united counties do not have a strong working relationship with our closest city, Cornwall, regarding tourism, economic development and logical growth compared to other municipalities and cities around the country. I want to remedy that. One current area of cooperation between South Glengarry and the City of Cornwall is the Cornwall Regional Airport, which is in South Glengarry in Summerstown. Lafave said that after further study and review, he hoped that in a year or so an informed decision could be made on the property and said that he wanted to see a return on investment for the residents of South Glengarry.
Lafave said that he also wanted to ensure that taxes are being properly spent. Particularly, he would like to see the steep increases that residents in places like Glen Walter are seeing to their water bills. The municipal election is on Oct. 22. Lafave is running against Jaqueline Milner and Lyle Warden for Deputy Mayor. “I hope you will trust me with you vote,” said Lafave. “Having lived, worked, raised three children in this municipality and been involved in the many interests and opportunities that South Glengarry has to offer, I feel I am well qualified and the best candidate to become your Deputy-Mayor.”
Ellery Lafave.

Apples and art across the region Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Apples & Art returned for its 27th year. More than 20 locations across the region hosted 70 artists from Saturday Sept. 29 to Sunday, Sept. 30. “The goal of the tour is to give the residents and visitors of Cornwall and area an opportunity to enjoy art in the spaces where it is actually created. It is a chance to meet the artists, to chat, to see their work in a natural setting and enjoy the wellness of visual beauty and friendly company,” reads a statement on the Apples & Art website. “The organizer’s would like to thank all the artists for their generous contributions to our 27th Studio Tour, and a special thank-you to
our sponsor’s who helped us get the show up and running when the snow was still on the ground,” the statement goes on to say. Tracy Lynn Davis of Cailuan Gallery in Cornwall has been participating in Apples & Art for four years and says that she loves the event. “We have thousands of visitors that come through and we get to show everybody all the talent in Cornwall,” she said. Cailuan hosted eight to nine artists this weekend which Davis said was an example of the great local variety that exists in the art world in the region. Davis also pointed out that events like Apples & Art show the public how accessible local, high quality art is. “Art is affordable,” she said. “People should shop local and support a local artist.”

Aultsville shines the light Provided by Aultsville Theatre
CORNWALL, Ontario - On Saturday, the Cornwall Concert Series presented Piano Caméléons, featuring pianists Matt Herskowitz and John Roney. During the evening, Aultsville Theatre recognized the generosity of the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), and other contributors to the theatrical lighting replacement project. Associating the recognition event with the Cornwall Concert Series provided the honoured contributors and guests with a chance to see the newly-installed lighting during a dazzling grand piano duel between the two masters of improvisation. Among the contributors, Aultsville Theatre recognized the Canada
Cultural Spaces Fund, the Centennial Choir of Cornwall, the Rotary Club of Cornwall – Sunrise, and the Cornwall Concert Series. Over 100 new lighting fixtures, most of which are new LED technology, new cycloramas, and programming gear are now installed at Aultsville Theatre, much to the delight of the theatre staff and its clients. The project contributors who were officially recognized, played a major part in the procurement of the state-ofthe-art equipment. “We’ve been waiting for a chance to thank Ontario Trillium Foundation and our generous contributors to the project, and this particular evening seemed to be a perfect opportunity”, said Felicity Svenson, Theatre Board President. “The Cornwall Concert Series has been very supportive of the theatre and we thought it was a nice pairing for our recognition
news evening.” Aultsville Theatre has been serving the City of Cornwall and surrounding communities since 1976, hosting both touring and professional shows for the benefit of local audiences and providing a fully-equipped performance venue for local arts and performance groups. The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is an
agency of the Government of Ontario, and one of Canada’s leading granting foundations. OTF awarded more than $120 million to some 700 projects this year to build healthy and vibrant communities in Ontario. Invitation to Open House - Cornwall Tourism Municipal Accommodation Tax and Tourism Development Fund
Thursday, October 4th
Two sessions: 2 pm - 4 pm and 6 pm - 8 pm
Benson Centre
Automotive Room, 800 Seventh St West Earlier this year the City of Cornwall implemented a Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) to support tourism development in Cornwall. Tourism stakeholders and interested residents are invited to stop in to our open house on Thursday, October 4th to learn more about MAT, the proposed Municipal Service Corporation and the proposed Tourism Development Fund. Proceeds from the MAT must be used to further develop the Tourism industry in Cornwall. Part of the plan calls for the creation of a Tourism Development Fund, to be administered by an independent not-for-profit Municipal Service Corporation. This fund would support Cornwall’s tourism sector by providing financial assistance to eligible projects or initiatives in areas such as: • Hosting major sporting events and conferences • Sponsorship of tourism-focused festivals and events • Development of new and/or existing tourism assets and attractions • Other projects which enhance Cornwall’s position as a visitor destination Cornwall Tourism is seeking input on this process and on any other ideas on how to develop our tourism sector. The event is open to all - everyone welcome!

Bancroft withdraws from Trustee race Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Current South Stormont Mayor and Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) candidate Jim Bancroft announced that he would withdraw from the race for school board trustee. Bancroft made the announcement via press release on Monday, Oct. 1. “Today, I am announcing that due to some ongoing health issues dating back to the first week of August, I am withdrawing from seeking election as an Upper Canada District School Board Trustee,” Bancroft’s press release reads. “In doing so, I also realize my name will remain on the ballot. Today’s announcement will hopefully give all residents the opportunity to review the information on the other candidates, John
Danaher and Marshall Wilson, before casting your ballot.” Bancroft stated that rural education was something that he hoped would stay at the forefront of the discussion. “The UCDSB faces many challenges in the near term. Rural education should never be discounted, and maintaining our rural schools located in our hamlets and villages must always remain a priority for every trustee seeking your support,” he wrote. “I am sure the remaining candidates will also be supportive.” The election is on Oct. 22. Anonymous Donor makes an Uncommon Challenge Provided by St. Lawrence College KINGSTON, Ontario - They’re relatively new to the Kingston area, but already they’re making a mark. St. Lawrence College today announced that an anonymous donor has stepped forward to issue a challenge to the community to join his family in supporting the College as it enters the home stretch of the largest campaign in its history. The donor – who prefers to remain anonymous for the short term – is challenging the
community to donate $250,000 in support of the College’s Uncommon Campaign, and they will double their impact with a $250,000 gift of their own. Combined with their more recent support, the Challenge gift and the giving it is expected to generate will have close to a $1M impact on the campaign, which is now $1M shy of its $11.5M goal. “We’re thrilled our donor sees the value the College has for its students and our community, and even more excited that the family is using their support to encourage others to join them,” says Glenn Vollebregt, president and CEO. The anonymous donor has made gifts to the
College over the last three years – supporting everything from the new Innovation Centre, to community-integrated learning opportunities for students, to the new student life centre which will open this fall. “It was clear in our conversations with our donor they felt the College was a quiet but important part of the community,” says Rob Zuback, director of alumni relations and development. “With this Challenge, they’re hoping to inspire more people and organizations to learn about St. Lawrence College and see the value in investing in our community’s college.”
The College’s impact extends well beyond the 8,000 students who began classes this month, and includes the 95,000 graduates about 80% of whom live within one hour of one of the three campuses – who live and work in our communities. The Challenge will run until the end of April, at which time the Kingston phase of the Uncommon Campaign is expected to have reached its goal, while work on the Cornwall and Brockville phases will move into high gear. The Challenge applies to Uncommon Campaign donors to any campus.

Longtime volunteer firefighter passes away Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
WILLIAMSTOWN, Ontario - Longtime volunteer firefighter and former Township of South Glengarry employee John Hugh Munro passed away on Wednesday, September 19, 2018, as the result of a tractor accident at his home. He was 61. John Hugh was a volunteer with the South Glengarry Fire Service for 34 years at their Williamstown station. He was also a longtime employee at the old Kraft factory in Williamstown
before becoming an employee with the Township of South Glengarry’s Roads Department, where he worked for 10 years. “Our Department is brokenhearted,” stated Fire Chief Dave Robertson, “John Hugh was not only a dedicated member of our Fire Service, but also an avid community volunteer and dear friend to many. He will be missed by the Department and community.” In respect for John Hugh, Township flags (in North and South Glengarry) were lowered to
half-mast. “On behalf of Council and all Township employees, I extend our deepest condolences to John Hugh’s family,” stated Mayor Ian McLeod, “We have lost a valued friend and colleague. Our community is a better place because of his many contributions and he will be sorely missed.” John Hugh Munro leaves behind his wife Jill (née Benton); his three children, Brock, Dylan and Shelby; his beloved dog Bentley and many other family and friends.

Why not act your age? Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
I don’t know if it is because we are in election season or not, but some members of Cornwall City Council seemed to have forgotten that they are expected to lead by example. The example that at least three councillors showed this past week is not one that I would be proud of. Political points and a political edge are always something that politicians are looking for, but if you are willing to throw respect out the window, you are part of the reason why voters lose confidence in their elected officials. At the last Cornwall City Council meeting on Monday, Sept. 24 three Cornwall City Councillors unfairly lashed out at the meeting chair, Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy. You might feel that the Mayor is not doing enough on files like the Cornwall Harbour, but to tell him to “get off his ass and show some leadership” in the middle of a meeting he is sharing on live television is not the way to express that. Show some respect if not for the man, then for the office he holds and act in a way befitting your own office as a City Councillor. Also, if any councillor truly feels that enough is not being done on any file, then they can put forward a motion and ask their colleagues for support for what they want done. A councillor has the same power as the
Mayor to put forward motions and if you don’t have confidence enough in your ideas to bring them forward to a vote, then don’t complain. If councillors want to show the voters that they are capable of strong leadership, then what I saw Monday night did not do that. It is the Mayor’s responsibility to manage debate in council meetings to ensure that they run smoothly. If a councillor is out of order or off topic then it is the Mayor’s responsibility to reign them in. This was the case at Monday’s meeting. These three councillors were all off topic at multiple points throughout the meeting. The Mayor attempted to keep the debate focused on the matter at hand, in this case Big Ben Ski Centre, and instead, one councillor told him, and I’m going to paraphrase, to keep his mouth closed. The meeting chair needs to be respected. He’s the referee for the debate, and it is his job to keep the meeting on track, if he isn’t doing that or doing it fairly, then sure, have a go at him, but Mayor O’Shaughnessy was managing the meeting well and I applaud him for not snapping back at this particular councillor who was definitely out of line. If you demand respect then show it, it is that simple. Every councillor should think about themselves in that chair at the head table and how they would expect to be treated. Real leaders lift others up and set an example. Those who will fail as leaders work
********* One small thought: This past week, both at the United Counties level and in our own Cornwall Mayoral Facebook Live debate, the issue of making paramedics an essential service was brought forward. What I believe people don’t realize about this situation is that if ambulance services
are declared essential, then when the time comes for collective bargaining negotiations, those decisions will be ruled on through independent arbitration. A common complaint of municipalities is that arbitration does not take into account a municipalities ability to pay. Where I fall on this is that yes, ambulances should be an essential service. I believe that having only three ambulances on the road to cover all of Cornwall and SD&G was dangerous and it should not be allowed to happen again. As for a municipality’s ability to pay, Fire, police and EMS are the trinity of essential services that I believe a municipality must provide. If other areas have to suffer, so be it.

Cornwall City Council wishes to extend its gratitude to the hundreds of volunteers who took up pails and grabbers this year to beautify our city by collecting litter. Due to this collective effort, and the continued hard work of volunteer coordinators Pam and Ray Carson, numerous streets, sidewalks, recreational paths, waterfront areas and parks look amazing! So much progress has been made towards building a cleaner and more attractive community since the Adopt-a-Street program was initiated in June 2016. On behalf of Cornwall City Council, I commend all the volunteers who have achieved impressive results. Thank you for offering your time and energy to such a wonderful initiative. Sincerely, Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy

‘Not Withstanding’ John Milnes Consider This
The ‘Not Withstanding’ clause in the Canadian Constitution has, to date, been used with a modicum of rationality. The present government of Ontario has brought all rational behaviour to a halt. Now the ‘Not Withstanding’ clause is being subverted to serve the needs of a petty and vindictive populist. If this were not so, why was the original action against the City of Toronto not a part of a provincial policy to
slash ALL municipal governments by the same measurement? No longer is the Province of Ontario being serviced by a democratic process; we are being led down the slippery slope of dictatorship. Unfortunately, not even the caucus members of the present government can see this and it saddens me to realize that intelligence comes after subservience to a wrong-headed leader. We are being swallowed up in Trumpian actions that are foreign to Canadians. It is unquestionably true that the politician is elected and a judge is appointed but that is not the whole story. Judges, in our Courts of Law, make decisions based upon evidence brought before them.
When the actions of justice are balanced between the law and politics then the law MUST prevail. Why, is the obvious question and I will simply answer it by saying the law is there to protect the body of people who bring an action against the governing body of the day. The law is the protector of democracy and the ‘Not Withstanding’ clause in the Canadian Constitution should not be used to ‘whiplash’ those who disagree with government actions. As citizens of this wonderful province and country we must begin to arm ourselves with the tools to challenge the unjust actions of the populist presently leading our province. One of the most important tools at our disposal is the ability to challenge the local
member of provincial parliament with respect to his possibly supporting such undemocratic actions.
The MPP for Stormont, Dundas &
South Glengarry is our ELECTED representative. We should demand to know if he is truly representing our needs. The office of the MPP must be bombarded with letters and emails seeking to know if he supports his constituents or his undemocratic leader. Through letters to the editor I would welcome readers’ thoughts on my interpretation of where the law stands in our society.

At present, Farm Boy has 28 stores in Ontario. One of the company’s largest stores in located in London just west of the Western University. Now the company has even stores in Toronto. The number of stores is expected to double over the next several years. Farm Boy is indeed the best success story to emerge from the Seaway city of Cornwall. And what is more there are reports that Farm Boy will expand to other parts of Canada.

I vividly remember how Farm Boy started in Cornwall and how this Canadian food retailer rapidly expanded to other parts of the province. The start of Farm Boy is a real Cornwall and Canadian success story. I wrote many stories about this enterprising company. One of the owners lived a few houses from me when I worked as a reporter in the city. Farm Boy stores have been sold to owner of
Sobey’s grocery chain. The proposed $800 million deal was confirmed by Empire Co. Ltd, Sobey’s parent company. We have been assured not much will change at the popular Cornwall and Ottawa as well as other stories known for their fresh produce, locally sourced products and ready to eat prepared foods. Farm Boy will be managed separately from Empire’s broader operations. The company’s founder and the chief executive officer Jean-Louis Bellemare will continue The second Farm Boy store was opened in in his role for a long time. The End. Can you please help me make my story come true and donate to the Canadian Cancer Society for Breast Cancer Awareness Month? I know I am just a kid, but if you help me, we can make a big difference together. Let’s work together to create a world where no one has to fear cancer! You can make a donation by calling the Canadian Cancer Society at 613-932-1283 or visiting their website at www.cancer.ca Even super heroes need help sometimes! From Chloe
Breast cancer has been a widespread disease for years. Its cause is unknown, and it knows no race or age boundaries for attacking mostly women. The numbers are startling. According to thebreastcancersite.com, a Web site that helps fund free mammograms for underprivileged women, 182,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer (one every three minutes) and 43,300 women will die (one every 12 minutes) of breast cancer this year. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) estimates that about one in eight women in the United States (approximately 13.3 percent) will develop breast cancer during her lifetime. WHAT IS BREAST CANCER? Breast cancer is an uncontrolled growth of breast cells that may form a mass of extra tissue called a tumor. Tumors can be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). The most common type of breast cancer begins in the lining of the ducts — the tube-like part of the breast that milk passes through to reach the nipple — called ductal carcinoma. When it spreads outside the ducts, it is called invasive
breast cancer (most breast cancers are invasive). Metastatic breast cancer is cancer that has spread from the site of the initial cancer to other parts of the body. SIGNS OF BREAST CANCER The scariest part about breast cancer is that you can have it and not even know it. Early breast cancer usually does not cause pain and there may even be no symptoms at all. However, as the cancer grows, it can cause any of the following changes: a lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area; a change in the size or shape of the breast; nipple discharge or tenderness; inverted nipples; ridges or pitting of the breast (skin looks similar to an orange peel); and the way the skin of the breast, areola (area surrounding the nipple) or nipple looks or feels (red, scaly, warm or swollen). EARLY DETECTION Studies show that regular breast self-exams, combined with an annual exam by a doctor, improve the chances of detecting cancer early, which is the key to more treatment options and a greater chance of survival.

Dear Neighbours, My name is Chloe, but you might know me as a Cancer Fighter in our community. I am 9 years old, and am in grade 4. You might have seen me around selling bracelets to classmates, friends & family to support the Canadian Cancer Society raise money to help people going through cancer. At school, my friend and I each donated 10 inches of our hair to help make wigs for people who have lost their hair as a result of their cancer treatments. I am writing you today to seek your help for a very important mission! Being a super hero is REALLY hard work, but I do it because too many people I care about have been touched by cancer. Two of my great aunts have died of breast cancer, and I have lost other family members to other types of cancer. I don’t want other kids to lose people they love like I did. My mom and dad told me that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. That’s scary with a capital S! But, more moms, aunts and grandmas who get this kind of cancer are surviving and that is AWESOME! I want to help find a cure so that someday I can tell my kids a story like this… Once upon a time there was this really evil bad person named Cancer (dun dun DUN) but then tis awesome kid hero came along and worked with other people and killed all of the cancer FOREVER.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Heaven Carbonnell never imagined she would own her own spa at the age of 21. Carbonnell, who graduated from the Esthetician program at St. Lawrence College (SLC) in Kingston, worked locally at Oasis Hair & Day Spa upon graduation. After a year and a half, she decided to venture to Banff, AB to work at Moose Hotel & Suites spa. Unsure of what to do next, she returned to the city to study PreHealth at SLC. “My mom and my dad were like, ‘you should do mobile (spa) services and go to people’s homes,’” she said. Carbonnell decided to follow through with
her parent’s suggestion and began the setup process of Aspen Spa. The spa, located on 527 Pitt St., opened on July 4. “There are a lot of spas in Cornwall, so I wanted to do something a bit different from what everyone else is doing,” said Carbonnell. “So I decided on mobile, and to still have a place for people to go to. AKWESASNE, Ontario - Seven Leaf announced on Thursday, Sept. 27 that it had become the first Indigenous grower of medical cannabis to be licensed by Health Canada. “Seven Leaf has the potential to create a new economy on Akwesasne which in turn will impact the broader Akwesasne economy with new jobs and contracting opportunities,” said Seven Leaf President Lewis Mitchell. In a statement on their website, Seven Leaf announced a plan for rapid growth, with the goal of tripling the size of their production facility on Cornwall Island by the Fall of 2019. When operating at full capacity, Seven Leaf aims to employ 75 people with the next phase of hiring beginning in six months. “The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne shares in the celebration of the licensing of Seven Leaf. We look forward to the positive contribution Seven Leaf will have on Akwesasne’s economy and look forward to advancing our working relationship with Health Canada to ensure our common objectives are achieved,” said Abram Benedict, Grand Chief of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne.

Second year for Elizabeth Denis Dessureault memorial tournament Nick Seebruch
nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - In February 2017 Cornwall resident and cancer educator Elizabeth Denis Dessureault passed away from lung cancer. Her memory, and her cause continue however with the Elizabeth Denis Dessureault Memorial Hockey Tournament. The goal of this annual tournament organized by Dave MacDonald and his wife Sue is to not only honour Elizabeth’s memory, but also to raise money to help fight the disease she died from. “I’m overwhelmed with gratitude,” said Robyn Denis, Elizabeth’s mom. “As a parent, when you lose a child, one thing you want is for them to be remembered.“I’m just overwhelmed with how our community has come together to organize this in her memory.”
There were 11 teams that took part in the tournament across three divisions. There was a Golden Boys division, a Recreation Division and an Open Recreation Division. Dave MacDonald hoped to raise as much as $6,000 this year from the tournament for lung cancer research. The tournament continues Sunday and includes a silent auction with prizes such as a deluxe room at the Ramada Inn, a golf package and a casino package. “There aren’t too many around who don’t know someone who has been touched by cancer,” said MacDonald. Lung cancer kills more women than all other cancers combined, yet receives the least amount of funding. Lung cancer is also on the rise amongst non-smokers.

Invitation aux portes ouvertes – Tourisme Cornwall Taxe municipale sur l’hébergement et Fonds de développement du tourisme
Jeudi 4 octobre
Deux sessions : 14h – 16h et 18h – 20h
Centre Benson
- Cornwall Express - www.cornwallseawaynews.com
Salle Automotive, 800, 7e rue Ouest

Your best guide on how to clean a fabric is the care label, which must be sewn into all articles of clothing. If it says dry clean, then only dry clean. If it says hand washing, you have to decide how to wash it. On the supermarket shelves, next to the regular laundry detergents, you’ll find several products that make special claims for laundering fine washables. There is no reason to buy one of the specialized brands of detergents. Use a HAND DISHWASHING LIQUID. All it lacks is the optical brightener that regular detergents contain.

Counties reject airport involvement Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario - The United Counties of SD&G voted to not become involved with the Cornwall Regional Airport at their September meeting. “At this time there, area a lot of questions that need to be resolved,” said United Counties Warden Ian McLeod in an interview with Seaway News. “It came down to concerns over the governance of the airport.” The United Counties commissioned an Ad Hoc committee to look at the Cornwall Regional

Airport and report back on whether or not the Counties should seek to be involved. As it stands now, the airport is governed by an independent commission that represents the interests of the major stakeholders, namely the City of Cornwall and the Township of South Glengarry, where Ian McLeod is also currently Mayor. “I guess what we would like to see is the governance change so it can become a profit centre,” said McLeod. McLeod conceded that nothing will likely be done about the airport until after the upcoming municipal elections on Oct. 22.

The Cornwall Regional Airport (Nick Seebruch/ TC Media). At the last City of Cornwall Council meeting on Monday, Sept. 24, the Cornwall City Council voted to have their administration write a report on the City’s continued involvement with the airport. Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy said that for his part, he believed that the airport should be expanded. “I really think there is some benefit to expanding the airport,” he said.

O’Shaughnessy pointed out that employers in Cornwall might benefit from having an airport so close by and also mentioned that there might be synergy with the Nav Centre in Cornwall and their flight training program. As for governance, replacing the independent commission with a governing partnership between Cornwall and South Glengarry was something that the Mayor believed could be looked at.

They then ask their would-be victim for their credit card number so they can “cancel the transaction”. Don’t fall for it. The September 26 edition of Cornwall Seaway News mentioned in Scuttlebutt that Councillor Mark MacDonald was talking about how unaffordable it was for kids to play street hockey during a discussion about emergency service budgets at the Sept. 24 meeting of Council. We would like to clarify that Councillor MacDonald was in-fact talking about the cost of playing minor hockey during a discussion about emergency service budgets and that he believes that he was not the one who brought up the issue.

Sept. 22nd I fell while getting off the city bus on Second/St. Felix. A huge thank you to the bus driver, a lady walking by and a man who lived close by. They, without hesitation helped me out so much. I was brought to the emergency. Long story short, I broke a bone in my knee that required surgery. I am on the mend. There are great people in this city, especially these three. Thank You!! Marsha.

A Spanish language teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine. House for instance, is feminine, la casa. Pencil, however, is masculine, el lapiz. A student asked, What gender is Computer? Instead of giving the answer, the teacher divided the class into two groups, Male and Female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether “Computer” should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation. The men’s group decided that “Computer” should definitely be of the feminine gender (lacomputadora), because 1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic; 2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else. 3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored inlong term memory for possible later retrieval; and 4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck to buy accessories for it. The women’s group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine (elcomputador), because 1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on. 2. They have a lot of data but still can’t think for themselves. 3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and.... 4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have got a better model. The women won.
I’m not sure if the Bills can still win their NFL division, but their rivals the Patriots did lose to the Detroit Lions last week, so I guess anything is possible this season.
