CORNWALL, Ontario – More than 300,000 Canadians have Type One Diabetes. The autoimmune disease does not have a cure.

This year, the Crafting a Cure beer tasting fundraiser will support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), bringing awareness to the organization and the cause.

Tickets for the event launched on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at The Stomping Grounds Bistro and Café. Tickets can be purchased at Rurban Brewing and will soon be available on Eventbrite. Early bird tickets cost $50 until Oct.

3 and will then be $60.

Currently there is set to be 15 breweries showcasing their beers, one winery and organizers are hoping to have a cidery involved. The event will take place on Nov. 2 at the Nav Centre from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

“I’ve attended this event for the last three years. Jeff Lalonde and Cherie were the ones who started it,” said Bill Makinson, the new Chairman for 2018 Crafting a Cure for JDRF. Makinson, who has run Golf to End MS and has avidly volunteered for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall and District, expressed his interest in running the event as soon as he heard of the opportunity. “I thought, ‘this just can’t be’. I just couldn’t see it go,” said Makinson.

Although Makinson does not have any family with Juvenile Diabetes, he has met several individuals who are affected by the disease through the current and previous committee.

“This committee worked really hard to establish something that Cornwall really enjoys,”

said Makinson. “The craft brewing scene has really become popular over the years. I love the stories from the men and women who brew the beer. It’s quite a culture and I’m just very enticed by it.”

LONG SAULT, Ontario – When Sharon Miller of the Rotary Club of Cornwall Sunrise visited Agra, India last year, she witnessed firsthand how teenage girls do not have easy access to feminine hygiene products.

Without these products, girls often miss school and are sometimes forced to drop out.

Miller, who was in Agra dispensing the Polio vaccine as part of the End Polio Now initiative, discovered an organization that sells sustainable menstruation kits after her trip, however she believed the price of these kits was steep.

As an avid sewer and a strong believer that women should have full access to education, she took it upon herself to spearhead her own project, Go with the Flow. The group creates sustainable menstruation kits with several donation-based products.

On Sunday, Sept. 23, Miller and nine friends held a packing party to celebrate and organize the 100 sustainable feminine hygiene kits that they created since June over the course of 15 sewing parties.

One group member will be visiting Ghana,

Africa soon and will distribute 50 on her trip. Miller will be visiting Agra, India at the end of this year and will take the remaining kits with her.

“I was never told no at any business that I approached,” said Miller gratefully in regards to donations.

Starting off with $500 from the Rotary Club, Miller fundraised for the kits and materials starting in June.

Each kit is designed to make girls feel beautiful and keep contents discrete. Inside a handmade drawstring bag that can be used as a backpack, there are eight 100 per cent flannel washable liners, two 100 per cent cotton leak proof shields (with Pul inside), two pairs of cotton underwear, one washcloth, a bar of soap and two disposable towelettes. The items are geared to last four to five years and liners resemble washcloths, thus avoiding the chance of social stigmatization.

“You can’t save everyone but you know you can help someone,” said Miller.

The Go with the Flow project will continue but at a slower pace compared to the summer months.

Optimist Club hosts inaugural Pinewood Derby Shawna O’Neill shawna.oneill@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – The first, local Little Rascals Pinewood Derby, hosted by the Optimist Club of Cornwall, saw almost 40 racers on Saturday, Sept. 22.

“The president of the club wanted us to come up with new events…so I decided to gear one directly at the kids,” said Rick Dore, the race organizer and Optimist Club member.

“I’ve done this since I was a child. So I decided to put this on…and it turned out to be a real big success.”

Each racer paid $10 to compete. The overall winner of the event was Logan Summers, with Brooke MacGillivary and Bentley Rottier placing second and third in the ‘A’ division, and Mikayla Summers and Quincy Houle placing second and third in the ‘B’ division.

The Optimist Club built the track this year,

but next year they plan to invest in a proper track.

“We want to extend it, make it bigger and make a full day event out of it,” said Dore, looking forward to future events.

Participants had two opportunities to make their cars at the wood shop of Jody Archambault, an Optimist Club member. Paint, supplies and wood squares were provided to make the miniature racers.

“I hope you see next year that it grows bigger…I’m very happy with it,” said Dore.

All money raised will be donated back to the Optimist Club to fund future events for the community.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall Fire Chief Pierre Voisine was named Career Fire Chief of the Year by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC).

Voisine was presented with the award on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018.

“The City of Cornwall is very proud of its very busy and active fire department, very very well lead by our Fire Chief Pierre Voisine,” said Councillor Bernadette Clement in a tribute video for Chief Voisine. “He brings great energy to his leadership role. Great, modern approach to communication with the community in terms of increasing awareness around fire safety. And he is also somebody who thinks long term. He plays a direct role in that future of Cornwall and we greatly appreciate his energy and talent as Fire Chief for the City of Cornwall.”

Voisine became Fire Chief in Cornwall in

April 2015. Before entering his role in Cornwall, Voisine wo r k e d fo r t h e Department of National Defense and the Canadian Fire Marshal’s Office where Pierre Voisine Voisine lead the creation of an armoured vehicle extrication program for Canada’s soldiers in Afghanistan and its NATO allies. He was responsible for the contracting of the inspection, testing and maintenance of firefighting equipment for the entire Department of National Defense.

Voisine could not be reached for comment at time of publication, but this story will be updated with his comments when they are available.

T.R. Leger re-opens at old Immaculate Conception building

CORNWALL, Ontario – Students were officially welcomed back to T.R. Leger School for Adult, Alternative and Continuing Education on Monday, Sept. 24.

The school, now located at the previous Immaculate Conception School building, has 14 campuses across the region.

In March, the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) and Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) swapped school properties. The CDSBEO purchased the old General Vanier building where T.R. Leger was housed, and the UCDSB acquired Immaculate Conception.

The official reopening saw a packed gymnasium of attendees, including teachers and students, with a lineup of eight guest speakers.

“I am very proud of our students and staff for creating such a caring culture in our new location,” said Sandy McInnes, T.R. Leger Principal in a press release. According to UCDSB trustee David McDonald, the new location is better situated geographically for many of the students and staff are enjoying the bright, updated space.

“When you attend these graduations in June, you hear the heartfelt stories of perseverance and adversity of individuals to make sure that they can get across that stage and graduate,” said McDonald. “We have individuals who are newcomers coming to Canada, learning our language

Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy, who presented the school with a certificate on behalf of the City, explained that during high school he could have never envisioned himself as Mayor. At that time, he didn’t have an interest in politics.

“My parents told me from a very young age,

work hard and good things will happen, so good luck to each and every one of you,” said O’Shaughnessy. Founded in 1978, T.R. Leger was named after Rosaire Leger, the past SDG County Board of Education Director, who was in attendance on Monday. Leger originally advocated for the school at a local and provincial level. The school offers self-paced study with flexible timetabling and course options.

NORTH GLENGARRY, Ontario – Brian Caddell is running for Deputy Mayor in North Glengarry.

Caddell, a former geography teacher at Glengarry District High School in Alexandria has served the Township as Councillor for Lochiel Ward for the past four years.

“I think as Deputy Mayor you are closer to what comes to the table at council,” Caddell explained.

“You’re going to have a say in what is important

that goes to council.”

Caddell feels that within the past four years, there have been a lot of improvements to communities in North Glengarry.

“There are a lot of improvements that have been done through the Community Improvement Project,” Caddell said. “We have had several bridges repaired in Lochiel.”

On marijuana, Caddell said that he wanted to restrict private vendors in the township.

“I have no desire to have marijuana sales outlets in our community,” he said.

Instead, Caddell said he would like to focus on support for seniors.

“We have the opportunity for a senior care hub in our community,” he said. “We could have 400 seniors living right next to our hospital.”

Other issues that Caddell would like to pursue if elected Deputy Mayor would be better internet and cell phone coverage for the township.

“I’m running to help the community,” Caddell said. “To me, I want to see the best for North Glengarry.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - Alaya Riley of Cornwall passed away at 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept.

19, 2018. She was 16-years-old.

Alaya had been battling cancer, specifically osteosarcoma, for several years.

“The journey has come to an end. Cradled in her father’s and my arms, our warrior peacefully left this world at 12:45 a.m.,” her mother Dinah

struggling after receiving surgery in Toronto for a biopsy.

Alaya had been working to get her driver’s licence and was looking forward to a full school year at La Citadelle in Cornwall.

Dozens of community members posted their condolences on Facebook.

Over the past few years, Rachel’s Kids in Cornwall had been doing what they could to help Alaya on her journey.

Kids said that as recently as Saturday, they had sent Alaya a care package.

Over the years, they have provided Alaya with wigs during her chemo treatments and gift cards to help with things like travel expenses.

“She was an amazing and inspiring young woman,” said Lauzon. “She will be missed by her community.”

Dinah posted on Facebook that they will communicate funeral arrangements when they become available.

Women march in Cornwall to Take Back the Night CORNWALL, Ontario - The annual Take Back the Night march took place in Cornwall on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018.

The Take Back the Night march is an annual international event that first took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1975 to raise awareness and fight against violence against women.

“Tonight, we will show that the people of Cornwall will not tolerate these types of crimes,” said Karlyn Fournier, one of the event’s organizers.

“We want to say we are safe, that we want to be free of violence and that we support each other.”

More than 50 people, mostly women took part

in the march this year which left the bandshell in Lamoureux Park at around 7 p.m.

Marchers then traveled along Water St. to York St. From York St. they crossed Fourth St. E. to get to Pitt St. and then followed Pitt. St. down to the park.

During the march, participants shouted slogans clearly stating that all women should be safe to travel the streets at night.

Susanna Neville, a sexual assault survivor explained to the crowd why events like this are important for survivors like herself.

“Once I shared my experience, I was no longer scared to share it,” she said. “Telling my story helped me to find my voice. Telling my story helped me overcome my shame over it.”

Growing Cornwall’s downtown has been an ongoing subject, especially in the atmosphere of the current election. I’ve heard a few ideas bandied about, including changes to parking regulations.

I think if you really want to welcome people into the downtown, then re-writing the rules around parking would be a good start.

As it is now, Cornwall’s downtown area has parking metres and a couple of pay for parking lots. All of these spots are monitored by by-law enforcement officers who ticket any infractions.

The cost to park is one-dollar an hour, with the penalty for infractions being $20.

Essentially, this entire system is another tax, one specifically aimed at business areas with a lot of traffic. I’m sure that the whole system is very profitable for the City of Cornwall, but to me it seems setup for diminishing returns.

Right now, there area fewer and fewer businesses in Cornwall’s downtown. The block of Pitt St. between Second and First streets has at least five empty store fronts. Not only do I feel like this parking system is hindering growth in the downtown, I also I feel like this whole system is outdated.

There are ways for the city to still benefit from the parking tax. The system can be run in a way more favourable to businesses and customers and still be run at a lower cost than what it is budgeted for now.

No one likes to be penalized, so I think that the parking system should be setup to make it as easy as possible to avoid a ticket. I think that these parking spots should still be metered, because no downtown business wants someone parked in front of their front door all-day for free.

There should be no more meter maids/ bylaw enforcement officers running from car to car looking for people to punish. Instead, there should be an electronic scanner at each parking spot to indicate if the spot is occupied or not, and then the occupant of that spot should be able to pay online from their phone. Meanwhile, the scanner should record the person’s licence plate in case they don’t pay.

This would mean that there would be the immediate expense of buying these scanners for the parking spots, but I think it would save the City money in the long run. Not only, would there be a savings of the salaries of the by-law officers, but also, I believe that this way, more people will pay because it will be easier.

Also, instead of having to guess the amount of time you are going to be parked in a spot, the

scanner can just track the time you checked in and the time you checked out and you can pay for the time that you actually used.

Quite a few private parking lots in Ottawa have adopted a similar system. You park in a spot, then to pay you login to a website on your phone, give them your licence plate number and the spot you’re parked in and then just pay online via credit card or PayPal. Right now, I feel that parking meters and their associated tickets are a deterrence for shoppers

to go downtown. In a healthy downtown, parking spots are in high demand and need to be metered to regulate that demand, but threats of punishment will just send the message to stay away. Make it easy to pay and easy to avoid punishment and make our downtown more efficient and welcoming to business and traffic a like.

Disagree on wards

Dear Editor, Totally disagree with your perspective.

Lived in ward communities most of my adult life and was refreshed to see Cornwall’s

structure.

Voting for “councillors at large” gives city residents with a say in the total representation of their government. A small city like Cornwall

would suffer with ward councillors vying for what is best for their little ward Vs what might be best for Cornwall overall.

Cornwall is small enough so that what is good

for one ward for the mostpart will be benefit all.

Cornwall’s structure increases the likelihood of all pulling together Vs for each fifedom.

Dear Editor, I couldn’t agree more.

In addition to the valid points you make, as things stand, should a citizen have a local concern or wish to make his/her views known to council, it is necessary to contact each and every council member. Having done this a few times, I can attest that it is a complex and timeconsuming affair, which I am sure discourages many from doing likewise - not a sign of healthy

democratic principle. Moreover, council members feel under absolutely no obligation to even acknowledge or perhaps even read what was sent them, as it represents just one insignificant voice in 45 000. They appear to be responsible to nobody but themselves and thus out of touch with constituents.

I also find it quite impossible now election time is here to keep a track of such a plethora of candidates’ platforms and personal details - and

I like to consider myself relatively tuned in to municipal affairs! Were there to be a ward system, the number of candidates to weigh would be considerably fewer. Just a quick drive in my neighbourhood reveals sprouting billboards for so many different candidates as to be risible.

Rather than encouraging the casting of ballots, it has quite the reverse effect.

In all the places I have lived until now, a ward system was in place and functioned admirably.

The candidates could and did canvas their particular ward and make themselves known to constituents, plus discover particular very local concerns and issues.

I find it aberrant and truly disappointing that this is not the case in Cornwall. This issue needs addressing before the next municipal elections roll around.

2) Mary Mack was the first woman to serve on Cornwall city council. She was first elected in East Centre Ward in 1947. At the time, only three other Ontario cities had elected women to serve on council. When asked how she wanted to be addressed as a member of council, Mack insisted on being called alderman. She said alderwoman sounded like the name of a tree. 3) Orval Tessier, coach of Chicago Blackhawks, was named NHL coach of the year (1982-83). 4) Cornwall’s first Kentucky Chicken store opened on April 1, 1965 on Augustus St. 5) John Robert Davey was killed his first day on the job with Cornwall Police Department on Sept. 6, 1892. 6) The Cornwall Chapter of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union erected the water fountain that graced old Central Park in 1906. 7) Bob Murray, captain of the 1972 Memorial Cup champion Royals, played his entire NHL career (15 seasons) with Chicago Blackhawks. 8) Peter Balcombe was the last person hanged in Cornwall. Not all being done currently is wrong, but after being in municipal service for 40 years, I see areas that need improving, and have MANY ideas to communicate to stay, and even reduce

taxes. ALL that is needed is expertise & leadership.

Totally bilingual, I can offer communication in English or French to all. An important issue is the recent water tax reserve increases in certain hamlets, I promise to review, re-evaluate the process, find a better way forward, and REDUCE that increase of close to 50% in some areas, that is so onerous on seniors/families, we must make life & costs easier not harder. A full review at building and permits, to help and direct staff, and aid residents. Seniors and families are foremost in my thoughts, as are our great farmers, with MPAC or other issues, I can be your voice!

Our schools, must be protected and kept here.

Last , but not least, I will look into the EMS/ Ambulance 24/7 issue in the Township. We pay full time taxes, for service below par, especially in a strike. I support essential service, and if needed , an arbitration costing or even online referendum, not a Counties decision to again defer this issue. This is playing with lives.

LANCASTER, Ontario - A new Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) III monument along with two commemorative plaques were unveiled in Lancaster on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018.

The LAV III monument project was started by the government of Canada in 2014 to commemorate those who served and died during Canada’s involvement in the War in Afghanistan from 2001-2014.

More than 40,000 Canadians served in Afghanistan and 162 died there, including Sgt. Marc Leger of the Village of Lancaster.

Sgt. Leger and three others were the first Canadians to die in Afghanistan. Sgt. Leger died on April 18, 2002 while serving in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

“The LAV III was the backbone of Canada’s operations in Afghanistan,” said Master of Ceremonies Pierre Roy. “Our community’s contribution to this war included 28 Glens.”

A plaque on the LAV III commemorating the service of Canadians in Afghanistan was unveiled, as was a stone monument in tribute to Sgt. Leger.

Sgt. Leger’s mother Claire addressed the gathered audience at the unveiling.

“When my son was killed in Afghanistan my worst fear was that he would be forgotten,” she said. “Thank you for this plaque. I now know that he will be remembered. We, Marc’s family and friends, are more grateful than what words can say for what you have done.”

After the monuments were unveiled, a Canadian Forces Hercules C-130 aircraft flew over the ceremony in tribute to Canadian veterans and Sgt. Marc Leger.

Fierté francophone Communiqué de presse de l’école élémentaire publique Rose des Vents - Les élèves de l’école élémentaire publique Rose des Vents ont fait du bruit et ont affiché leur fierté francophone en ce 25 septembre 2018.

NATION SUD, Ontario - L’équipe d’intervention en cas de bas niveau d’eau de la Conservation de la Nation Sud (CNS) a révisé l’avis de sécheresse, passant de mineure à modérée (niveau 2), pour la région supérieure du bassin versant de la rivière Nation Sud. Cette zone s’étend des eaux d’amont de la rivière Nation Sud dans le canton d’Augusta jusqu’au village de Casselman. Le reste du territoire reste dans un état de sécheresse mineure (niveau 1) tel qu’émis le 1er juillet 2018.

Depuis la publication d’un avis de sécheresse mineure en juillet, les conditions ne se sont pas améliorées au cours du mois dernier.

Les précipitations reçues en août et en septembre ont été localisées et insuffisantes pour améliorer l’humidité du sol, les débits et les eaux

souterraines. Les stations climatiques en proximité des eaux d’amont de la rivière Nation Sud relèvent une baisse de 60% des précipitations normales au cours des trois derniers mois.

L’équipe d’intervention en cas de bas niveau d’eau de la CNS s’est réunie le 21 septembre. Les membres ont signalé des observations de prolifération d’algues, de poissons échoués dans des bassins provenant de ruisseaux asséchés et une réduction du rendement des cultures.

Si ces conditions continuent, les puits peu profonds peuvent s’assécher. Une sécheresse prolongée peut également affecter la santé des arbres et les semis nouvellement plantés.

Les résidents, les entreprises et autres industries à travers le territoire peuvent aider en réduisant leur consommation d’eau de 20%, en limitant les utilisations non essentielles (par exemple l’arrosage des pelouses, le lavage de voitures, etc.).

Parmi ses nombreuses reconnaissances, mentionnons : la médaille du Service militaire du Canada pour son travail inlassable au sein du corps des cadets; un hommage de la Fédération des enseignants des écoles secondaires de l’Ontario; la distinction Personne franco-ontarienne de l’année 1987 à Cornwall; en 1999, Année internationale des personnes âgées, le Prix du patrimoine accordé par la gouverneure générale de l’Ontario en reconnaissance d’une vie de contributions remarquables.

Jean- Paul Gélinas sur La Promenade d’Honneur CORNWALL, Ontario - La Promenade d’honneur, inaugurée en 2011 afin de dédier, annuellement, une place d’honneur à une ou un francophone, vivant ou décédé qui, par son grand courage, son effort extraordinaire, sa détermination inlassable, et son leadership a contribué d’une façon exceptionnelle au développement et au bien-être de la communauté francophone de Cornwall. Afin de préserver ce souvenir, le nom de cette personne sera gravé sur une pierre de granit qui sera intégrée au pavé uni qui entoure le monument.

Cette plaque s’ajoutera à celles où se trouvent inscrits les noms des récipiendaires de l’honneur des sept dernières années, Mme Jeanine Séguin, M. Gérald Samson, Mme Huguette Burroughs, le Père Charles-Émile Claude, Mme Tina Charlebois, M. Gaétan Simard et M. François Bazinet.

Afin de choisir la personne qui mérite cet honneur, nous avons invité les organismes de

langue française de la région de Cornwall à soumettre le ou les noms d’individus qu’ils croyaient dignes de cet honneur selon plusieurs critères. Le récipiendaire de cet honneur pour 2018 est Jean- Paul Gélinas Jean- Paul Gélinas.

Jean-Paul Gélinas, enseignant de français, consacre sa vie professionnelle à promouvoir l’amour de la langue française et la culture franco-ontarienne. Dès 1951, à l’école de Finch, il instaure avec succès un programme de français. De 1954 à 1969, il répète l’exploit à l’école secondaire Char-Lan de Williamstown. En 1969, il assume la responsabilité du département de français à l’école secondaire Général-Vanier de Cornwall, où il enseignera jusqu’à sa retraite en 1984.

Au fil de ses 33 années d’enseignement, Jean-Paul participe à la fondation de l’Association des enseignantes et des

heel scuff marks can be tough to get off your floor. But they are actually easier to remove than you think --if you know the trick! Here’s a tip up from airports where they have to remove the scuff marks from tens of thousands of feet a day on miles of corridor floors. The method couldn’t be simpler. Take an ordinary, clean tennis ball and simply cut an X in the ball with a utility knife.

Then take a broomstick and push the tennis ball on the end. The tennis ball removes the marks.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Lauzon family were given a big shock at the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store on Tuesday, Sept. 18.

Ashlee and Shane Lauzon and their three kids, Kyler, 9, Austin, 6, and Hunter, 3, found out that their family had been selected to receive a brand-new home in Cornwall from Habitat for Humanity.

“We’ve had fantastic support from the community for the Lauzon’s,” said Hank Blasiak, Board Chair for Habitat for Humanity Cornwall.

The home is scheduled to be completed in Sept. 2019, but a site has yet to be found. Habitat for Humanity Cornwall will be building a

semi-detached home on Eva St for another family, scheduled to be completed by 2020, but that family has yet to be selected.

“There is a real affordable housing shortage across Canada,” said Blasiak.

According to Blasiak, 14 percent of Canadians are in need of affordable housing, but in Cornwall, that number jumps to 19 percent.

Joanne Mohamed, Building Projects and Finance Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity explained their selection process.

“They have to have a need and we check their financial criteria,” said Mohamed. “When we met this family, they were very sweet and there was a huge need. We can’t wait to break

If you’re having problems getting into tight spaces because of your brush handle, just cut the handle off. Then, you’ll be able to get into those tight spaces. When you want to take a break in the middle of your paint job, you don’t have to stop to clean your brush every time. Just store it in a plastic bag, make sure it’s sealed and put it in the refrigerator. It will keep it fresh until you can get back to it. Finally, one last tip: use an ordinary cotton swab. Dip it in paint and use it to touch up those tiny, hard-to-reach spaces.

When you’re done, throw it away—it’s that easy.

Forests Ontario and its planting partners want to remind landowners that fall is the most opportune time for planning next spring’s planting activities.

Removing a Nail From a Wall: Trying to

pull a nail out of the wall using a hammer can have unintended c o n s e q u e n c e s . Instead, use a wide putty knife to protect the wall. Grip the nail near the base with a pair of endcutting pliers, rock the pliers to the side, then regrip the nail as low as possible. Repeat till the nail can be pulled out.

Balancing a Ceiling Fan: There’s nothing

more annoying than a wobbly c e i l i n g fan. Did you know that there is a way to fix that? You can buy a blade balancing kit. The kit is very inexpensive and comes with several different weights. One of the weights clips onto the blades and then the others have self adhesive on the back. To use the kit to balance your blades, begin by turning your fan to find the speed where you get the most wobble.

Turn the fan off again and then attach the clip-on weight to any blade -- about halfway down. Turn the fan back on and see if it helps. If not, keep moving the weight to every other blade until you get the best results. Once you’ve isolated the “problem” blade, then move the weight up and down the length of that blade (stopping and starting each time) until you locate the spot where you get rid of the wobble. Once you have found the perfect spot, place one of the sticky weights on the back side of the blade right about where the clip-on weight was positioned. Finally, remove the clip-on weight, turn the fan on and you’re done. It’s that easy!

Here’s a simple way to childproof your power tools.

Insert a key ring into the hole in the end of the plug just like you would put on a key. The ring will prevent the plug from being inserted into a receptacle. When it comes time to use the tool, it is simple to slip the ring out.

Although they can be appealing, if anything goes wrong with your project, you won’t have proof of payment without a receipt.

Remember, reputable companies comply with the law. A professional licence shows that a contractor is qualified to do the work you’re hiring him or her to do – like plumbing or electrical. Building permits allow your municipality to make sure that any work you have planned meets the Building Code standards and by-laws.

Closing your pool Closing the pool for the winter is an annual autumn ritual for many Quebecers. Here are a few practical tips on the subject, to help you save money and time, limit the use of polluting chemicals, and prolong the life of your pool.

In addition to this advice, note that there are comprehensive online guides for in-ground and above-ground pools, such as those found on the Association des commerçants de piscine du Québec website.

When to do the work?

For your pool-closing job list, there is no sense starting too early: wait until at least midOctober, depending on the region.

Be prepared One day before your closing, get one step ahead: Run the vacuum.

Do a back-flush.

Balance your pool’s pH. Do a final chlorine treatment, but add more than the usual dose. If you have a salt-water system, increase the intensity of the treatment.

Tip: Because the water is colder and cleaner at this time of year, a higher dose of chlorine (superchlorination) should provide the required disinfection. This tip will save you the cost of a shock treatment!

Few people realize that all pool-chlorination products contain the same ingredient (calcium hypochlorite) as shock-treatment kits, but in a lower concentration. So all you need to do is get a high enough level to obtain comparable results.

You’re now ready for the actual pool closing and other related tasks.

Cleaning the covers To remove a ring around the edge of the cover, clean it with a damp cloth. Avoid using cleaning products, as this can alter the chemical balance of the pool water.

If you have a solar cover, remove it from the pool, spread it out on the ground and clean it with a gentle spray from a garden hose. Once the cover is dry, fold it and store it where it won’t be exposed to rain or sunlight.

Dropping the water level Using the drain/waste setting, drop the water level to about 30 centimetres (1 foot) below the water returns. Don’t forget to remove the return heads; to do this, simply unscrew the bolts.

Emptying the hoses and freeze management Emptying the hoses on an above-ground pool is easy: simply detach them and let gravity do the rest.

On the other hand, as in-ground pool hoses are buried, a shop vac or leaf blower will come in handy. Here’s how to go about it: Attach the device to the first return hose you have disconnected.

Temporarily seal the joint with duct tape.

Set the device to “blow” and start it. The air pressure will blow the water out of the return like a geyser.

Keep the pressure on until there is not a drop left in the hose.

Empty the other return hoses in the same way.

Even if the pipe between the pump and the skimmer is empty, take the following precautions: From the skimmer end, pour in about ¼ gallon (slightly over a litre) of antifreeze.

Push a foam rope (the kind normally sold as weather stripping) the entire length of the hose.

Should water in the pipe freeze, the ice will compress the foam rather than put pressure on the hose walls.

Cover the end.

In-ground pools are susceptible to water infiltration. To prevent this, screw caps to the ends of the water returns. Seal the caps by covering the threads with Teflon tape. This step is important: fall rains or a thaw could raise the water level above the returns and even up as far as the skimmer.

If your pool has a bottom drain, the pipe linking the bottom drain to the skimmer will remain full of water up to the same level as in the pool. Protect this pipe using the method described above.

Pour in some anti-freeze (about ¾ gallon [3.4 litres] in this case).

Push in some foam rope.

Close the valve at the skimmer.

Tip for added protection of the skimmer As ice and water could rise up, do not let them into the skimmer! From a pool supply store, get some polystyrene blocks designed for this purpose. First insert a rectangular block into the bottom of the skimmer, then push in a second block, trimmed to fit the top section.

Extra tip:>@$p> Push one or two stiff wires through the blocks to keep them together.

Pump storage and filter winterization After all the hoses have been removed and the power has been disconnected: Remove the water from the pump and clean the basket as required.

Store the pump in an area protected from frost.

Empty the filter bottle and place the handle in the “winterize” position.

After all the water has dripped out, do not replace the cap.

Protecting the winter cover and other precautions Pool covers left out in the open can be damaged by UV rays. Considering their high cost (especially in the case of an in-ground pool), you want to take every precaution to extend their useful life! Cover your pool with a winter tarp until spring.

Across the top of an in-ground pool, pull the cover taut and hold it in place using stakes stuck into the ground.

Around an above-ground pool, use a system of cables and tie-downs (bungee cords) to keep the cover tight around the pool.

Unexpected visitors Adventurous animals can sometimes make their way onto your pool cover and end up trapped. These lost critters would love an escape route!

Tip: Place a board diagonally across the pool to allow them to make their way to the edge.

Remove the plank once temperatures start to drop below freezing.

Falling leaves Do you have a yard full of leafy trees? Stretch a net across your winter cover during the fall, and remove it after all the leaves have fallen.

Tip: To keep the leaf net from getting wet, place a ball between the net and the pool cover.

This will allow the leaves to dry, making removal easier.

If you don’t use a net, be sure to remove the leaves at the end of the fall season; otherwise decomposed leaves will hamper your efforts to achieve good water quality come spring. Don’t learn this the hard way: instead, take the appropriate precautions and your pool will be ready in no time once the warmer weather arrives!

CORNWALL, Ontario - Erin McIntyre, Knox-St. Paul’s new Minister, has lived in several regions across the country but is hoping to plant longlasting roots in Cornwall.

“I’m so new, I’m still sorting things out,” said McIntyre, who officially started work on Sept. 1.

“Right now I’m just letting things wash over me as I learn the community and how I fit in here.”

McIntyre, who has family in the area but has never lived in Cornwall, moved from Dryden, ON with her 4-year-old son. She is thankful for the colouring supplies that community members have given to him, as well as photos with names to help her identify who attends her services.

“It’s been amazing so far. The folks here are just wonderful to be with,” said McIntyre.

After attending university in Lethbridge, AB and obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages (French and German), McIntyre achieved two Masters Degrees from the

University of Saskatchewan in Divinity and Sacred Theology.

Nine years ago, McIntyre was ordained after a lengthy process. She never imagined becoming a Minister, until community members suggested it to her.

“It got me thinking about it, and I thought ‘you know what, I will try it,’” she said.

McIntyre has previously worked in Benito, Kenville and Fish River Cree Nation, MN. What McIntyre loves most about her job is meeting the people everywhere she goes.

“You get to see the best of people and you get to hear their stories and what’s important to them,” she said. “You get to see the love they share to their families. Sometimes you see the worst in people too. But you see them trying hard.”

McIntyre is looking forward to meeting members of the community and partners of the church.

“I’m really inspired by the vision that this community of faith has, which is to help build a

city where no one journeys alone,” she said.

Recently she enjoyed meeting with the Cornwall Interfaith Partnership and learning more about what is offered locally.

paddling a red canoe. Our recent experience at Lake Louise, Alberta was an eye-opener. If you didn’t bring your own canoe (it won’t fit in the overhead of a flight from Tokyo or Beijing), you can rent one at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Rates for guests: only $75 per hour, $65 for a half-hour, okay if you’re a quick paddler. We weren’t guests, so we would have had to pay $115 per hour, $105 per half-hour.

Hmmm, I wonder why there is no put-in spot for privately-owned canoes.

We paddled for almost three leisurely hours on gorgeous Lake Louise.

Did it cost us $345? No. We used our own canoe. It was with us, atop our VW camper, throughout our 13,000 km drive. It was so worth it.

opinion Another gem of tourist experience was our almost two-hour breakfast at the Altitude Restaurant on the Icefields Parkway. From the moment our charming waitress seated us at the window right above the ant-like activity on the Athabasca Glacier, to when she obligingly volunteered to use my camera to take our photo, we felt like royalty.

If our Canadian tourist industry is to prosper, as hosts we must be welcoming, hospitable and of service to our foreign visitors, whether we work at the gas station, or at the grocery store, or in an information centre, restaurant, hotel or auto repair shop. We will no longer have to be adept at handling a pick-axe, chain saw, riveter or plow, but we will have to become courteous, accommodating and well-informed.

Here’s an apocryphal story about a presentday indigenous person reflecting on what foreigners have done to his native land. “When they first came, they took the trees for lumber and masts for their ships.

Then they took the animals of the forest for their fur. Then they dug holes in the ground for minerals. Now they’re drilling holes in the ground to take out the black gold.”

Our economy has always needed a cash cow.

In the past it was logging, mining, farming and

manufacturing. Now our manufacturing industries have been taken over by China, our textile mills and assembly lines are going abroad. A glance at the labels of the goods in our retail stores tells the story.

What’s next for Canada? Tourism! That seems to be our emerging livelihood. We are becoming a service industry catering to tourists, especially ones from abroad. Foreign tourists don’t come here to buy our manufactured goods, but they do take home maple syrup, models of Mounties in red tunics, Hudson Bay blankets and anatomically incorrect tiny canoes.

Any real canoeist who glances at one of those souvenir canoes knows what I mean.

Foreigners also want to experience a quintessential Canadian activity:

On Friday, Sept. 21, the Cornwall Interfaith Partnership will hold an event at Knox-St. Paul’s from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in honour of United Nations International Peace Day.

The third and final Through the Lands of the Lost Villages bus tour of the year departed from the Lost Villages Museum at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23. The tour, which made several stops throughout the region, cost $30 per person. A complimentary barbeque dinner followed the tour at 5 p.m. “We cover everything and anything that happened here between the 1950s,” said Jim Brownell, the tour guide and past President of the Lost Villages Historical Society. Emergency doctor flying high with her latest medical mystery!

Melissa Yuan-Innes is a busy emergency doctor, a mother of two and a prolific writer of novels and thrillers.

“I love writing,” said Yuan-Innes.” I make time for it, sometimes at the expense of other things like sleep or exercise.” This Glengarry resident, who works as an emergency doctor in Cornwall, Alexandria and also at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in Ottawa adds: “If I am working, I write 500 words a day. But, if I am not working, my goal is 1000 words a day. Then I can relax and concentrate on my patients and family.”

Death Flight is her sixth and latest novel.

However, there are many more to come. The North Lancaster resident has written books on

science, fantasy, romance, non-fiction and for children.

She attended medical school at the Western University in London, Ontario, and did her residence work at the McGill University in Ottawa, her home town. Some years back, Yuan-Innes, with the help of her good friend Becky MacKay, held two fundraisers to save rhinos.

“Choosing my favorite books is like choosing my favorite child. So I resist myself. However, my writing skills improve with my every book.”

Yuan-Innes said her latest book was fun to write. A local surgeon had suggested all sorts of potential weapons and surgical maneuvers on the plane. The novelist writes under several pseudonyms over the years. She readily admits she is not a good sleeper because of shift work.

“I am either up early or up late.”

“What seems to be the problem?” asked the bee.

“I’m out of gas,” the man replied.

The bee told the man to wait right there and flew away. Minutes later, the man watched as an entire swarm of bees flew to his car and into his gas tank.

After a few minutes, the bees flew out.

“Try it now,” said the bee.

The man turned the ignition key and the car started right up.

Congratulations to Fire Chief Pierre Voisine for being named Career Fire Chief of the Year by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC).

Voisine became Fire Chief in Cornwall in April 2015. Before entering his role in Cornwall, Voisine worked for the Department of National Defense and the Canadian Fire Marshal’s Office where Voisine lead the creation of an armoured vehicle extrication program for Canada’s soldiers in Afghanistan and its NATO allies. He was responsible for the contracting of the inspection, testing and maintenance of firefighting equipment for the entire Department of National Defense. This same week, did you see Voisine’s new fire safety video? It is a parody of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Chief Voisine, do you miss that long hair?
