Walk to End Cystic Fibrosis Andrzej Terrence, Special to TC Media

CORNWALL, Ontario - This weekend, close to a hundred people gathered for the Walk to End Cystic Fibrosis at Lamoureux Park in Cornwall along with 60 other communities across Canada, including Ottawa, Kingston, and Brockville.

Kim Baird organized the event with the help of the Kinettes and the Kinsmen club.

“I originally joined Kinettes 32 years ago, and our national project was Cystic Fibrosis, so I reached out to the local chapter then and I met many of the families over the 30 years,” explained Kim. The annual walk has been operating for almost 30 years with the goal of making Cystic Fibrosis history.

It is estimated that 1 in every 3600 children born have CF, which means more than 4,000 children and adults in Canada have the fatal disease.

The Walk expects to raise around $7,000 to $8,000 that will go to research and treatment of Cystic Fibrosis.

Hailie Lalonde donated approximately $165 to the Walk to End Cystic Fibrosis on Sunday by selling bracelets that she made.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Canadian Union of Public Service Employees (CUPE) announced in a press release on Tuesday, May 29 that the City of Cornwall had rejected their most recent offer.

“Representatives of CUPE locals 234, 3251, 3251-01 and 5734 met on Thursday, May 24, and Friday, May 25, with the City of Cornwall,” the CUPE press release reads. “CUPE made a substantive offer to address the City’s stated concerns in bargaining. CUPE made a major move that could have ended the current strike.”

The union stated that they received word from the City that they had rejected their most recent offer and had instead requested a supervised vote of their most recent offer to the Union. According the CUPE the offer made to the union by the City on May 15 the day before the strike began contained provisions that were rejected by 93 percent of their members in the strike mandate.

On Wednesday, May 23, CUPE rallied at city hall at noon with approximately 400 workers now on strike.

“We do the same job that all other paramedics do in the province, but we’re not as respected or valued as much as they are, as workers,” said Amanda Palieps, president of CUPE 5734 with Cornwall and SDG paramedics. “Your paramedics are right now one of the lowest paid in the region and our part-time benefits are the lowest in the province.”

“The city claims financial woes, but in a recent financial report that City Council received, Cornwall is considered to be in a strong financial position,” said Palieps.

“While the City is committed to the bargaining process, there are issues which are fundamental to the City’s operational and financial needs that must be resolved to ensure that any deal reached is fair not just for employees, but for the taxpayers of the City of Cornwall as well,” said the City in a press release.

CORNWALL, Ontario - An elderly man living in the Riverdale area had a bad encounter with a roaming cat on Thursday night. The man has asked that we do not share his full-name, so we will refer to him as Mr. F. Mr. F. said that he came across a grey cat with a white collar in the backyard of his Riverdale home on the evening on May 24.

He said that when he went to pet the cat, it attacked his right arm, causing him to go to the emergency room to get anti-biotics and a tetanus shot. The cat left him with several lacerations up his arm to his elbow. Mr. F. said that he waited in the emergency room until 4:30 a.m., a seven-and-a-half hour wait.

Riverdale resident Brendan Wells says that stray cats are a problem in his neighbourhood.

He is aware of the proposed new by-law designed to discourage people from feeding roaming cats, but says that he feels it does not go far enough.

“These are wild cats, they are not pets,” Wells said. “There is one solution, euthanasia.”

Wells explained that he had seen some local organizations advocate for trap and release, where roaming cats would be trapped, spayed or neutered and then released back into the area where they were caught. He said that this would not work because the cats would still have feral tendencies and would still be out hunting for food.

He said that these cats leave messes in

neighbourhood flower gardens, urinate on car tires, which creates a foul smell, they destroy lawn furniture and, as in the case of Mr. F., can be dangerous.

Wells said that when he heard about what happened to Mr. F., he called the Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS), who directed him to call the OSPCA. When he called the OSCPA, their office was closed, but their answering machine directed him to call the CCPS. The police ultimately told Wells that they could have an officer come out to the area to write-up a report, but rather than occupy an officer’s time, Wells says that he wants to find a solution that gets to the heart of the matter.

“No one wants to see an animal destroyed,” said Wells. “But you have to face reality.”

The City of Cornwall administration presented City Council with a proposed by-law at the last City Council meeting on May 14. Under the by-law proposed by the City, anyone who feeds roaming cats would be responsible for having the cats spayed or neutered and all cats would be required to be on a leash when outside or would need to be in a fenced in space.

Mary-Jane Proulx of Roy & Cher’s Rescue was skeptical of that proposed by-law as well, but said that catch and release was the most effective way of dealing with the problem.

Mellissa Alepins of Tiny but Mighty Kitten Rescue went further to say that spaying and neutering needs to be more affordable.

The SD&G OSPCA made a presentation to Cornwall City Council in Nov. 2017 where they stated that they had taken in over 700 cats that year and that nearly one-third of all roaming cats that they take in in the province come from Cornwall.

For their part, the CCPS said that if an individual is seriously injured by an animal, that they should call the police.

“If someone is attacked by an animal afterhours and the injuries are significant enough that medical attention is required, police should be contacted,” said Stephanie MacRae, Communications Officer with the CCPS. “If the attack is less serious where medical attention is not required and the owner of the animal is known to the victim, the OSPCA should be contacted during regular business hours as they are the appropriate agency to investigate these types of incidents.”

CORNWALL, Ontairo - On Friday, June 23, 2018 the Agape Centre will be hosting their second annual Murder Mystery Fundraising Dinner. This event will be located at the Best Western Parkway Inn & Conference Centre; it will start at 6:00 p.m. and end at 9:00 p.m.

Anyone over the age of 13 is more than welcome to join and are bound to have a wonderful time.

The entry fee will be $60 each person and will include a lovely three-course meal, wine, the Murder Mystery that will be presented by the BigTime Murder Productions and a silent auction. This auction will include over $2,000

A Long Overdue Celebration of Life Sara Lauzon Wayback Playback

On May 22, a customer walked up to the bar at the Royal Canadian Legion (where I work), and complimented me on my previous article. After thanking him, we began discussing various subjects about Cornwall’s history. Eventually, the topic of a particular tombstone was brought up, and to my surprise, this special memorial was not known to him. (This is the beauty of “finding” subjects to write about - They tend to find me!)

Between the years 1913 and 1952, what is now known as Heartwood Nursing home (at 201 Eleventh Street East), once operated as a local poor house.

In 1890, Canada created the “House of Refuge Act.” This act stated that every county, or union of counties, was to provide a home accompanied by an industrial farm. This act aimed at removing severe cases of destitution from town streets, and organized it with administration.

During the facility’s thirty-nine years of operation, 906 residents called Cornwall’s House of Refuge home. These people were admitted to the local poor house for various reasons. Some of the reasons for admittance listed in Cornwall’s House of

Refuge register included: that residents were mentally ill, elderly, unable to work, “idiots”, and women who were pregnant out of wedlock.

What surprises the majority of people I discuss this subject with, is that the entire grounds surrounding Heartwood Nursing Home is an unmarked cemetery. In April, May, and June of 1985, the area just West of the building was being transformed into Gretchen Court. During the excavation work on the property (as Benak Limited began digging the foundations for homes), the remains of twenty-nine bodies were discovered. (Residents of Cornwall’s House of Refuge with no living relatives to claim the bodies were buried on the property in unmarked graves, some of which have been untouched since

their original burials.) The bodies that were discovered in 1985 were moved to St. Lawrence Valley Cemetery, on the outskirts of Long Sault. For the second time, these House of Refuge residents were buried in unmarked graves.

On June 23, 2016, citizens from our community helped me write a new chapter in Cornwall’s history: after eleven months of fundraising, a monument was unveiled, commemorating the lives of the twenty-nine former House of Refuge residents, and a small ceremony took place. Surrounded by dozens of people, their graves were blessed by Father Haley, and for the first time since their original burials, they received the celebration of life they had always deserved.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Rachel’s Kids 14th annual Garden Party and Charity Auction drew the largest crowd that Dr.Rachel Navaneelan has seen to date. The event was held at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club on Saturday, May 22.

This year’s fundraiser for Rachel’s Kids House of Hope featured a live auction, silent auction and a surprise gift box draw. It was also announced that Rachel’s Kids have selected four local children who will be flown to Disneyland for a day. The names of the lucky recipients have yet to be revealed.

Navaneelan didn’t have a specific fundraising goal in mind this year, but hoped that the community would show as much support as possible.

Last year’s Garden Party raised $161,000.

Sean Cowan, 15, this year’s co-Chair for the

Garden Party, survived High Risk ALL B Cell Leukemia. He was diagnosed in 2015 and had 1033 treatments of Chemotherapy. Cowan spent almost 100 days in the hospital, about 40 weeks at Ronald McDonald House and missed one and a half years of school. Rachel’s Kids gave Cowan a Playstation4, TV and a nice setup in his room that enabled him to play online with friends while he was required to be in isolation.

“They made me feel good and happy,” said Cowan. “It really helped me through it. Knowing they’re going to be doing the same thing for other kids, it feels really good.”

“We have been doing this since 2005 and I just can not believe how much time has passed,” said Navaneelan. “I’ve definitely been having a good time raising money for children. So I don’t feel the time pass by.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Relay for Life is this Friday, June 1 at 6 p.m. at the Maxville Fair Grounds.

One team has been working hard in the lead up to the event to meet their fundraising goals.

The Phenomenal Women are a team of 11 sisters, sister-in-laws and friends who all want to do their part to raise money for cancer research.

“We know that one in every two people will be affected by cancer in their lifetime,” said team member Melinda Fenton.

On Saturday, May 26, a week before the relay, they held a garage sale in Cornwall. Selling possessions that team members had donated, by midmorning that day they had already raised $500.

In addition to selling garage sale items, they also had prepared a bake sale with items that they had made themselves, including delicious lemon seed blueberry cookies.

Their goal was to raise $1,500 in time for the relay.

As of Monday, May 28, the Relay for Life in SD&G had raised $48,651.10 of their $50,000 goal.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall resident Robert Carriere wants a new electric wheelchair and some answers. Carriere has a bad heart, COPD and has lost a leg. He is confined to a wheelchair, but says that the Champlain Local Area Health Network (LHIN) denied his request for a new electric wheelchair.

Carriere, 70, says that he has not been given a good reason as to why he will not be getting a new chair.

“They say I can do too much, but I’m lost without my chair,” he said.

The LHIN went on to say that it can only provide equipment under certain circumstances and on a limited basis.

“The LHIN can provide equipment under certain circumstances on a short-term basis to patients receiving LHIN home care services,” the LHIN said. “Eligible patients must be receiving, or have been referred to, at least one professional service, such as nursing, physiotherapy or occupational therapy.”

There are provincial government programs that Carriere has looked into to see if he could get funding for a new chair, but the Ontario

Assistive Devices Program only covers 75 percent of the total cost of the device, leaving the patient to pay for the remaining 25 percent.

Carriere said that electric wheelchairs cost upwards of $10,000 and that it is too much for him to afford even 25 percent of the cost on his pension.

Carriere says that the chair is an important part of his life as he still tries to remain independent and active. He said that he would use his chair to travel to the clinic when he needed to and that he still likes to go fishing during the summer.

“People were concerned they were seeing debris in the water,” said Douglas Cooper. “We noticed at the River Institute too, things like shopping carts and bicycles. The shopping carts are actually killing the fish, so we are really concerned about that.”

Some of the organizations and community groups present at the cleanup were the South Glengarry Fire Department, St. John Ambulance, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Seaway Valley Divers, the Cornwall Lunker Club, the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences and the South Lancaster Fish and Game Club. Over the last two years, over 700 volunteers have helped to clean up our river.

“We all really care about the river,” said Douglas Cooper.

LANCASTER, Ontario - On Saturday May 19, community organizations came together to retrieve garbage pollution from the St. Lawrence River. Efforts started at 10 a.m. at the South Lancaster Wharf.

“This is our first year in Lancaster,” said Mike Seguin, who works with the Ministry of the Environment. “So we chose the Wharf as a starting point. We’ll have divers in the water today and they’re working with the South Lancaster Fish and Game Club. The club is providing the boats. We’ll be working around the Wharf today and the Glengarry Carin.”

According to Karen Douglas Cooper, who works with the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences, this is the third year of cleanup efforts between South Lancaster, Cornwall and Akwesasne. Lancaster was chosen for the tenth cleanup event. Since 2016, over 20 tons of garbage has been removed from the St. Lawrence River by everyone who makes the Great St. Lawrence River Cleanup possible.

South Glengarry welcomes newly hired Economic Development & Tourism Coordinator JUNE 2018 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Provided by the Township of South Glengarry

LANCASTER, Ontario - The Township of South Glengarry is pleased to announce the addition of Shauna Baggs as the new Economic Development and Tourism Coordinator.

Reporting to the General Manager of Community Services, Joanne Haley, Shauna will be building on the work of former Development and Communications Coordinator Kelli Campeau, who is now the Clerk for the Township of South Glengarry.

“We are very excited to welcome Shauna to our team. Shauna’s experience, knowledge and artistic abilities will assist in fostering relationships with our local businesses and community organizations leading to growth and new partnership,” said Haley.

Shauna brings a unique mix of creativity and experience to the position, having most recently served as Tourism Coordinator for the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry.

Her previous municipal experience in economic development, administration, building and planning at the Township of South Stormont will benefit existing businesses and events in the community and help set the stage for new and creative ideas to attract local investment and visitors.

Priority projects will include: vacant building/land inventory, investment packages and the administration of the new South Glengarry Community Improvement Plan (CIP).

“I am starting at a great time – coming in on the launch of the new CIP program will help existing local businesses make improvements to their space and in turn will help to attract new investment into the community” said Baggs.

The CIP program is a positive and well used program throughout the Counties, including North Dundas, South Stormont and North Glengarry.

Highlighting the abundance of local, provincial and national heritage sites in South Glengarry, there will be a new explore South Glengarry marketing campaign that will kick off the summer season and encourage visitors to the area.

Shauna grew up in Long Sault and continues to live in the small town with her family. As a member of Your Arts Council, she is a big supporter of local artists and enjoys painting between soccer, volleyball and t-ball games.

She attended Trent University in cultural studies and is a graduate of the Advertising/Marketing program at Loyalist College and Festival/Event Management from Algonquin College. She believes that the strongest asset to any community is their people.

LANCASTER, Ontario - If the first quarter numbers are any indication, 2018 will be a record year for building activity in the Township of South Glengarry.

In a report presented to Council at the April 16th Council Meeting, Chief Building Official Kevin Lalonde reported on the number of permits issued from January 1st to March 31st, 2018, with a comparison to the numbers from the previous 3 years.

“Over the past 3 years, we have processed over 740 permits with a construction value in excess of $59 million,” stated Lalonde, “We are off to a busy start for the 2018 season. If the current trend continues, this will be a record year for building activity.”

Lalonde’s report indicates that both construction value and permit revenue have steadily increased every year since 2015 for the first quarter of the year. Permit activity has already increased by 39% compared to this time last year, and is up 120% compared to 2015.

In terms of residential construction for the current year, of the 53 permit applications received to date, 7 are for new single detached dwellings and 1 is for a new 6-plex.

The team flew from Montreal, Quebec to Toronto, Ontario to start of their journey and soon experience 9 days in Europe. After the lay over, the Cornwall girl’s were off to a 7-hour flight to Dublin, Ireland and ready to play some rugby.

On April 18, 2018, the Holy Trinity SS Falcons were up against Tullamore RFC at the Naas Rugby Club in Kildare, Ireland. Tullamore took the lead right in the beginning of the game with two tries, but the HT Falcons persevered. Overall, the HT Falcons learned a lot from this trip, from how to play against tough teams, to how to hold a rugby ball properly. The girl’s had an amazing experience and can’t wait to start the new season.

Pilon ranked eighth in the qualifiers for the World Masters Tournament and his performance helped Team Ontario win the Canada Cup. Next for Pilon is the America’s Cup tournament to be held on July 5 at Port of Spain in Trinidad. This will be his first time going to that tournament, and there will be a fundraiser held on June 24 to help with the travel costs.

The tournament will take place at the Navy Club on Sixth St. and will have a 50 percent payout reward.

A sound grip, good posture, alignment and ball position are all important elements of good ball striking. We may not all have the athletic talent or mental toughness of a tour player, but for most of us there is no reason we can’t at least give ourselves a fighting chance to make a great swing by starting strong!

I often see two common “swing killers” long before my students even hit their first ball; poor balance and tension. If you are settled into your heels (or sitting) as you address the ball, chances are you won’t have good balance through your swing. Try to get the weight more to the balls of your feet at address. As you turn back your weight should naturally shift back so if you start in that position you most likely be off balance at the top of your swing. As for tension the first check should be grip pressure. If you are squeezing too tight to your club it won’t be long before that tension creeps into your forearms and shoulders. Not only will you not be able to release the club properly, but you’ll be exhausted after a few holes…. just think back to the last time drove “white knuckle” through a snow storm!

Don’t overlook the small stuff. A few small setup changes can often lead to huge results.

Why not tell the public what is going on behind closed doors?

The public should have at least some idea what is being talked about around the negotiating table during this strike.

If this were a private company where unionized workers were striking that would be one thing, but what happens at the City affects all of us and for accountability reasons, we deserve to know what is going on.

The City and the union are negotiating with taxpayer money, and their decisions will affect our future and the future of many municipal public services.

Both the union and the City of Cornwall have stated that they want to negotiate at the table and not in the press, while it is fair that they want to protect the veneer of civility, when it involves the public purse, the public needs to see the truth, warts and all.

The public should know how both sides are acting around the table as both sides ultimately work for the public. If the negotiating team for any side is acting in an immature or obstinate way in these meetings, then as a taxpayer, I want to know about it. Right now, there is very little that we do know about this strike other than which public services that have been affected.

There have been very few details about what has gone on around the negotiating table. I was told by representatives of the union that the City of Cornwall initially included in its offer a pay increase of zero percent on a one-year contract. I also know that these elements of the offer have since been taken off the table, whether they have been replaced by an offer of a pay increase or a longer contract, we do not know.

I do find it fascinating that the City had the gall to offer not even a cost of living adjustment to employees who haven’t received a raise in two, and in some cases, three years.

Ultimately, what it comes down to is that both the City and the union are parlaying with public services and public money. The public has a right to know why their daycare, public pool and library are still closed after two weeks of strike. The public also has a right to know if a

fair deal is being negotiated not just for the City of Cornwall or the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), but also for the taxpayers.

Free roaming Cats, urinate on property leaving a distinct foul odour, defecate in flower gardens which spreads disease, use shrubbery as scratching posts, tear up lawn chair upholstery, attract predators and are very effective predators that indiscriminately kill song birds and other indigenous creatures and now are attacking humans.

The City of Cornwall is known as, “THE FERAL CAT CAPITAL OF ONTARIO” and this City does

not have a Bylaw in which to Effectively dealing with this EPIDEMIC...

The Police were called and refered the complaint to the SPCA, the SPCA re:referred the complaint back to the Police. When the Police were called the second time they stated that they did not have a Policy or Procedure to deal with such incidents. City council pays a staff member to research other Munipalities Cat Bylaws and when that staff member returns with an all incompasing Proposed Cat Bylaw, different intellectuals proceed to rip it apart, stipulating various reasons like, “ cats are

animals that like to roam and explore.” OMG.. these are people that are elected into office,” BY THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE”, and Council has ignored this problem for the past 30 to 40 years and NOW, it is an EPIDEMIC..

Some Intelligent people think that the Trapping, Sterilization and then returning these felines back into their original territories, is the solution to this HEALTH, SAFETY and PROPERTY DAMAGE PROBLEM. The only thing that this addresses is the reproduction cycle of the animal, but does not resolve the many other identified serious issues..

Elections musings to munch on as we head for the campaign stretch run.

A big chunk of the province might be getting a new paint job (orange) but StormontDundas-South Glengarry will stay solid blue.

Conservative incumbent Jim McDonell is on his way to a landslide victory in StormontDundas-South Glengarry. He is backed by a huge, well-funded organization that is running on high octane fuel.

As one campaign worker put it, “We’re not taking anything for granted. We’re running hard ... as if we are in second place.”

The question is will Gentleman Jim be part of the governing party? And if he is, will Doug Ford reward him with a cabinet position?

McDonell reclaimed the riding from the Liberals in 2011, beating Liberal candidate Mark McDonald by 13,050 votes, an embarrassing result for the Liberals. He kept the seat in 2014, this time finishing 11,374 votes in front of the Liberal challenger. Just 914 votes behind the Libs was NDP candidate Elaine MacDonald. With leader Andrea Horwath’s popularity soaring, there is an opportunity for the local NDP to inch ahead of the Liberals. ********* If the Conservatives blow this one, just as they have in previous Ontario elections when John Tory and Tim Hudak managed to pull defeat from the jaws of victory, they should try a new way of picking a leader: Just pull someone off the street in downtown Toronto, lend them 10 bucks to buy a party membership and run ‘em.

The stumbling Blue Machine still has a shot at it but the Orange Wave is in gallop

mode with some polls calling for an NDP victory. It’s up in the air. One sure thing is that Kathleen Wynne will not be premier when the dust settles.

The Liberals, even reduced to a handful of seats, could play a major role in a minority government. An Andrea Horwath minority government would be easier for the Liberals to prop up than one with Doug Ford running the show. The Liberals “borrowed” several planks from the NDP election platform. They have become NDP-Lite. ********* Talk about being out of touch with what is going on out here in the real world. When Doug Ford proposed dropping gasoline prices 10 cents a litre, Preem Kathy suggested that nobody would notice a 10-cent-per-litre drop at the pump. Are you kidding. There are folks who will drive across town to save 1.9 cents a litre. Just a thought, but when was the last time the preem filled up at the pumps? ...

Critics of Ford’s proposal have pointed out that a 10-cent reduction would cost the government about a billion dollars in lost revenue. ... Just in case you aren’t paying attention to the election race, despite what the Liberals and NDP are suggesting, Mike Harris is not leader of the Conservative party. ...

Brockville mayor Dave Henderson, a former Conservative, is running for the Liberals in Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes (that has to be the riding with the longest name) against Conservative incumbent Steve Clark. Not much chance of an upset.

Clark will be a cabinet minister in a Ford government. Don’t be surprised if Henderson shows up as the Liberal candidate in the federal election where he might have a better chance of winning the seat.

RCMP discovered 77 bottles of illicit alcohol in the rafters of a house on Louisa Street. A warrant was issued for the owner. ... Cornwall grocer J. R. Gosselin foiled an attempt to rob him of his day’s receipts when he returned to his 154 Montreal Rd. home after closing his store for the night. A man hiding in his porch attempted to strike the grocer with an object but Gosselin deflected the blow and ran from the home. The man was arrested by township police a few blocks away.

Create a safety plan and learn about living safely with dementia

CORNWALL, Ontario - TimeraiserX Cornwall has been described as a win-win-win. The goal of the event is to raise volunteer hours for local nonprofit organizations, pay local artists and to give people the chance to buy high quality art with time, and not their money. The event is taking place on Thursday, June 7 at 7 p.m. at Cailuan Gallery, 225 Pitt St. in downtown Cornwall.

As stated, the event is about raising volunteer hours, not money. Money from sponsors and ticket sales to the event are used to buy art from local artists. Attendees at TimeraiserX buy the art by bidding their volunteer hours to a local nonprofit agency of their choice.

“The TimeraiserX Cornwall committee is very excited to host this event for the first time in Cornwall at Cailuan Gallery,” said Kelly Bergeron, one of the TimeraiserX organizers. “It’s a great

A criticism often heard of some fundraisers is that it is not always certain where the money is going and if the non-profits really are getting the support they need. TimeraiserX makes it very clear where the money is going, to local artists, and the attendees themselves are the ones who are directly supporting local charities.

The TimeraiserX event itself is setup to be a great party. The event in Cornwall on June 7 will feature live entertainment, adult beverages, event photography by Bruce Davis, catering by Christian Barque and more.

Cornwall Classical College to hold a reunion

CORNWALL, Ontario - In the early 1950s, the Clercs de St. Viateur opened the Classical College in Cornwall. The College was open from 1955 until 1968, but the students who attended that school during those 13 years still have fond memories.

“Those years were jewels as far as Francophone culture and education were concerned,” said Andre Vermette, a graduate of the college who was one of the students who boarded at the school.

Vermette and his fellow alumni are organizing a reunion in honour of the 50th anniversary of the college’s last year.

The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15,

“We want to invite anyone who had any ties to the college in the community,” said Vermette.

The Cornwall Classical College was located in Cornwall’s East End where St. Lawrence College is now. Through a partnership program with the University of Ottawa, the college offered a classical Liberal Arts education for students from Grade 9 right up until they graduated eight years later with their Bachelor of Arts degree.

Pierre Guindon, another graduate from the college who grew up in Cornwall said that this classical education has influenced him throughout his life.

“My love of classical music started there,” he said.

“The first classical piece I heard was Bolero by Ravel.”

Guindon went on to transfer to the University of Ottawa. After he graduated he played in the CFL for the Winnepeg Blue Bombers and the Montreal Alouettes before becoming Solicitor for the City of Cornwall.

The Classical College was not just restricted to male students however, female students like Madeleine Fournier were allowed in the college at the post-secondary level.

Alumni of the Cornwall Classical College or community members who supported the school are all invited to the reunion in September.

Officials with the Ministry of Transportation have confirmed that County Road 15 (Avonmore Road) at Highway 401 will be fully re-opened to traffic the week of June 4th. County Road 15 at Highway 401 has been closed to traffic since spring 2017. The closure of County Road 15 was required to demolish the old bridge and build a new overpass in its place.

The former Bank of Montreal branch will be built a new branch on Ninth Street as their old location is being changed to a different kind of business. The city is closing a deal to buy the building and make it the future site of the Cornwall Arts and Culture Centre. Most of the council work has been done behind closed doors and is the future of Cornwall.

Chief Troy Thompson makes a stand to inspire native youth to follow his lead by running a full marathon with kids from Akwesasne Mohawk School on Race Weekend to raise funds to battle obesity in his community.

Together they hope to defeat the stigma in his community around fitness and health.

On Saturday, May 26, 2018 the annual Family Fun Day food bank fundraiser had been hosted and was a success. The fundraiser was at 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., it began with a walkathon and included a host of activities for all ages that included a large bouncy castle and a petting zoo. All for a good cause and great fun.

Congratulations to the Holy Trinity Falcons who reached the SDG county championship finals with many victorious games, which means they are off to EOSSAA. On May 23, 2018 the Falcons will be travelling to Kingston to compete for the EOSSAA championship.

Congratulations to the junior boys soccer team from Char-Lan DHS who completed the regular season with a record of five wins and one loss, which made up for 15 points and top spot in the SDGAA ‘A’ standings.

This municipal election will be an interesting one for the municipalities of Cornwall and SD&G. As of writing, The Mayors of South Glengarry, North Glengarry, North Dundas and South Stormont have all either announced that they will not run again, or have not announced their candidacy. Even Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy of Cornwall has yet to announce his intentions for this election.
