CORNWALL, Ontario – Hope in Bloom is coming to Cornwall. The Cornwall Chapter of Parkinson Canada will be selling tulips at the Fermented Grape on Brookdale Ave. in Cornwall and at FreshCo on Ninth St. on Friday, April 20, 2018. The money will be going towards Parkinson Canada to support research and support services for those suffering from Parkinson’s Disease and their families.

Vernon Eccles has suffered from Parkinson’s disease since 2011.

He and his wife Penny have been involved in the local chapter of Parkinson Canada and say that while the Hope in Bloom fundraiser takes place in other parts of Canada, it has yet to be established in Cornwall, so they decided to help spearhead the project.

“At first, we didn’t know what it was,” said Penny Eccles. “He took part in a gait improvement course because we knew something was wrong.”

It was only after going to a neurologist in 2012 that Vernon was

diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, but he and his wife recognized that he had been suffering from the symptoms of Parkinson’s for at least a year.

“I looked up the symptoms of Parkinson’s and went down the checklist, tick, tick tick,” said Penny.

Penny and Vernon hope to sell 60 tulips, each in their own pot during the fundraiser. The tulips will be available at FreschCo just for April 20, but they will be at the Fermented Grape for a full week.

Vernon explained that he has a close connection to Cornwall and very fond memories. Vernon trained in Cornwall for his career in business and took his oath of citizenship in Cornwall.

“Cornwall has always been very kind to me,” he said.

There are 25 new Parkinson’s cases every day in Canada and there are around 300 people living with the disease in the Cornwall area.

For those looking for support, they can contact Parkinson Canada who will direct them to the local Parkinson’s support group who meet the second Wednesday of every month.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Local Freemasons came together to help a Cornwall man and his family with their fight with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

The Masons were working this past weekend to install a chairlift at the entrance of the home of Mike Labelle, who suffers from ALS. The project was done at no cost to the family through donations from Free Masons and from Fence Depot an David Brown Construction.

Steven Davies, the Worshipal Master of the Freemasons Lodge of the Lost Villages said that it was a part of the tradition of the Freemasons to build projects that benefitted those in need.

“We are trying to get back to the Masons of old,” said Davies.

In all, eight to 10 Freemasons helped out with the project.

Davies estimated that in total, the project probably cost around $4,000.

“It is amazing,” said Labelle. “It was totally unexpected and very touching.”

Labelle was diagnosed with ALS on Oct. 31 of 2017.

Labelle, 51, was born and raised in Cornwall and worked as a machinist for 30 years. Labelle’s family hopes to help form a local support group for people suffering from ALS in Cornwall and SD&G. Labelle said that his disease leaves him sore, in pain, fatigued and depressed, but that he greatly appreciates the support he has received from his family and the community.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall Innovation Centre (CIC) announced on Friday, April 13, 2018 at the Nav Centre that they have received $477,000 in funding to create the Ontario Emerging Jobs Institute.

The Institute will be geared towards skills training, particularly in the business, digital and agri-tech industries.

Kelly Bergeron, Executive Director of the CIC announced the new project to a crowd of people. Bergeron was the one who pursued the funding for the program and said that she was inspired to do so after sitting in on a meeting of the Ottawa Agri-tech supercluster.

“Our relationship with Ottawa has branched out in the past four months,” she said. “Our jaws dropped when we saw the opportunities for agri-tech in this region.”

Terry Besner, Economic Development and Communications Officer for the United Counties of SD&G said that there was real opportunity for growth in the agri-tech industry in the region.

“We need to encourage growth of our agritech industry and to stay on top of that growth,” she said, citing the changing landscape and new opportunities that innovation was providing the agricultural industry.

Michael MacGillivray, Interim Executive Director of the Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC) said that advances in agri-tech include modular farming, hydroponics, identifying and maintaining plant nutritional needs and promoting moderated use of water in farming.

Bob Peters, Economic Development Officer for the City of Cornwall, spoke on behalf of the Mayor and the City and said that this institute will provide much needed skilled labour for Cornwall’s workforce.

“If you talk to any employer in Cornwall, they will all say the single factor to their success is people,” he said. “It started with Kelly Bergeron and her vision to apply for this.”

The money was awarded to the CIC through the Skills Catalyst Fund, which was established by the Ontario Ministry of Advanced Training and Skills Development.

The program will begin enrollment in September 2018. There will be 160 spots available for students. Each student will be put through a two-month bootcamp followed by a three-month job placement in the field of their choice.

For 20 of those 160 students, there will be a scholarship available if they live outside of the community or are in financial need so that they can attend the program at the Nav Centre.

The program itself is free to all students, and the scholarships will go to cover expenses like travel or accommodations.

Doug Ford stops in Cornwall CORNWALL, Ontario - Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Doug Ford made a brief stop in Cornwall on April 17.

The Tuesday morning stop at the Ramada Inn was packed with supporters.

The event was hosted by Progressive Conservative MPP for Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry Jim McDonell.

In his address to the crowd, Ford hit many of

the campaign messages that he has hit upon across the province.

“I can tell you that Kathleen Wynne has zero, zero respect for taxpayers,” he said. “You put your hand in your left pocket and there’s Kathleen Wynne, you put your hand in your right pocket and in your other pocket is Justin Trudeau.”

“The government doesn’t create jobs, the government creates the environment to create jobs,” Ford said to a round of applause from the

crowd.

The meeting wrapped up with Ford walking around the room shaking hands with supporters. Jim McDonell gave the party leader a gift of cheese from Glengarry Fine Cheese.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall Councillor Elaine MacDonald and Cornwall Transit have started a new contest to promote Cornwall’s transit services.

They are challenging students ages six to 18 who reside in SD&G to create a video that promotes travel on Cornwall’s bus system.

While students would own the rights to the video, Cornwall Transit would use the best ones to promote their services.

The first place winner of the contest will get $500, second place will get $300 and third will get $100.

All videos must be between two and five minutes long and be in a standard file format or on a DVD. Cornwall Transit wants students to get consent from all those appearing in their videos, as well as consent for the use of any third party

material.

The videos should contain no vulgarity, violence or defamatory language, but other than that, the format is open and can even be animated, or a music video.

The aim of the videos should be to help promote the Cornwall Transit system.

Winners will be judged on concept, presentation, humour, animation and artistic design.

All entries are due by Tuesday, May 15, 2018 and must include a submission form.

LONG SAULT, Ontario – Township of South Stormont Mayor Jim Bancroft made a surprise announcement during his address at the Business Awards Breakfast in Long Sault on Friday, April 13, 2018.

Bancroft announced that he would not be seeking re-election this October.

“I will not be returning to work in the fall,” Bancroft said. “I really enjoy the work and I wish council the very best.”

Bancroft cited his 30 years in local politics and said that he had discussed retirement with his wife and decided that it was time.

Before the announcement of his retirement, Bancroft went over the successes that the South Stormont economy had seen over the past year, and some of the disappointments he says the Township has experienced during his term in office.

“At the beginning of our term, we thought we had two vibrant opportunities, but neither has come to fruition at this time,” Bancroft pointed to difficulties that the Township was having in attracting newcomers to the area.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Like many communities across the country, Cornwall grieves with Humboldt, Saskatchewan.

It has been nearly a week since 16 members of the Humboldt Broncos team were tragically killed when their bus crashed into a tractor trailer while en-route to a game in Nipawin.

Since that day, an outpouring of support has spread across the country and around the world for this community that lost so many of its young people.

In Cornwall, local schools, businesses and even us here at the Cornwall Seaway News participated in Jersey Day on April 12 in solidarity with Humboldt.

Local hockey mom Tracy Trudell remarked that she was touched by seeing signs of respect at sympathy, even on the other side of the border. She stated that when she passed through customs at the point of entry near Cornwall, on the American side, there were hockey sticks resting against the

building in memory of those who lost their lives in the crash.

Tracy has a teenaged daughter who plays for the girls Typhoons hockey team and they had recently traveled, by bus, to play a game in Timmins, ON. “I can’t imagine what those parents are going through,” she said. “Putting her on the bus now is so scary. It definitely touched home.”

Tracy’s eight-year-old son Carson made a memorial cross out of two hockey sticks that he says he will place in his family’s yard in remembrance of the Humboldt Broncos.

The same story of support played out across the United Counties of SD&G. “All of us were deeply saddened by the tragedy in Saskatchewan, particularly as many of us have spent countless hours on buses travelling to hockey games and other sporting events,” said Chris McDonell, Mayor of the Township of North Glengarry.

McDonell has ordered that the Canadian flag outside the township office be lowered to half-mast out of respect for Humboldt, Saskatchewan.

Wendell Lafave, an extraordinary marathon runner with 153 marathons to his credit and is not letting his journey end just yet. Wendell started this journey in 1977, at the age of 29 when he was looking through a magazine at the Summerheights Golf Links and noticed an ad for a marathon taking place in Ottawa. Since then, Wendell has ran marathons on all of the continents, and earned six medals from competing in the Berlin, New York City, London, Chicago, Boston and Tokyo marathons. Few can claim they`ve achieved this, but fewer can claim they’ve had an Abbott medal hung around their neck.

The Abbott World Marathon Majors medal is issued to runners who have completed in the six major marathons that include, Boston, New York City, Berlin, London, Chicago and Tokyo.

Lafave is now one of the 3,083 people to have earned this medal.

Cornwall City Councillor Mark MacDonald has been slamming is colleagues on Twitter and over email over the past few weeks in regard to the proposed 4.86 percent tax increase.

“You can call me lots of names, but one thing I would never be is hypocritical and two-faced,” reads one tweet from MacDonald.

“Politricks not politics with some members of this Council. Two-faced and deceitful with respect to the pledge,” reads another.

The pledge he is referring to is a pledge organized by local citizens who referred to themselves as the Community Action Group.

At last election, they asked all candidates running for council to sign a pledge saying that they would not raise taxes in the City of Cornwall.

Some refused to sign the pledge, like

Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy and Councillor Bernadette Clement, while others did sign the pledge like Councillor MacDonald and Councillor Claude McIntosh.

During this year’s budget process, Claude McIntosh said that it was a mistake for him to sign the pledge, stating that it did not hold up to the realities of governing. He also said that he had spoken to members of the Community Action Group and implied that the pledge was not at the forefront of their minds either.

A residential tax increase of 4.86 percent is the highest increase in recent memory.

Council has twisted itself in knots just to get itself down to that number, by taking money out of the budget, toying with the idea of a hiring freeze and creating new taxes intended to shift the burden off of residential rate payers.

Councillor Mark MacDonald has argued that this does not go far enough. He has said that councillors who signed the pledge not

to vote to raise taxes should stick to their word. Councillor MacDonald stuck to his word to not to vote to raise taxes by not being in Cornwall when the budget committee passed its recommended tax increase of 4.86 percent. Councillor MacDonald was on vacation in Barbados.

Councillor Mark MacDonald has said time and time again that the source of the City’s woes lies in supposedly bloated emergency services budgets, but he has yet to bring forward any serious motion to cut money from either the Police, Paramedic or Fire department budgets.

Some close calls, like the time the driver dozed off at the wheel waking up just in time to keep the bus from going off the road.

When the Royals played in Sault Ste. Marie on a Sunday night, the end of a three-game road trip, it was straight back to Cornwall, sometimes a ninehour trip on two-lane highways.

“Usually, after a road trip like that, everybody on the bus is sleeping, so you just hope the driver (who is going on little sleep) wasn’t going to fall asleep at the wheel,” he said.

“Just image what it is like in the western hockey leagues, teams travelling from Saskatchewan to British Columbia and down to the States?”

Back in the 1980s Ouderkirk was offered the job as head trainer of the Swift Current Broncos. He was told that the trainer was the spare bus driver for long trips.

“In the old days our drivers had regular jobs and drove the team bus as a part-time job, sometimes after finishing a shift at their regular job, be it Cornwall Transit or a trucking company,” he said.

There were scary trips like travelling through the national park on the way to Chicoutimi. The two-hour trip through the park covers up-anddown hills with twisting turns. Through a snow storm or blowing snow and it can be a treacherous trip.

“When you think of it, with all the junior team buses travelling the roads it is a miracle there haven’t been more accidents,” he said. *********** A few Cornwall residents have an attachment

to the Humboldt Broncos, among them city resident Bernie MacGillis.

Bernie was host for the Broncos when they played in the 2008 Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) Cup at the Ed Lumley Arena. They won the championship game 1-0.

“They were hard working and dedicated with a great manager and coaches,” recalled Bernie who spent a lot of time with the team and became sort of an honourary team member. He remembers the team motto: “We Respect Everyone, But Fear No One”.

Bernie was on the bus taking the Broncos to the airport and not paying a lot of attention as they left the civic complex. But when he looked up he noticed the bus was passing Nativity Church, heading east.

He logged thousands of miles on a junior hockey team bus, sitting up front just to the right of the driver, so in a way the Humboldt Broncos bus tragedy struck kind of close to home for Steve Ouderkirk who spent almost two decades as the Cornwall Royals’ head trainer.

Closing his eyes while sitting in his living room he can draw an image of what was going on in the bus moments before the horrific crash.

Guys joking around. A card game or two going on at the back of the bus. A couple of guys standing in the aisle talking to a team mate. Somebody stretched out and playing their favourite tunes.

“It’s not like any other bus ride, where everybody is sitting in their seats minding their own business,” said the former veteran trainer who became a Willie Wise ownership casualty. “Guys are up walking around, joking around. We had guys who on the way home would crawl up on the overhead compartment to sleep.”

There are two places where a team comes together: the locker room and the bus, but it is the bus where the real bonding takes place, said Ouderkirk.

“The locker room (before a game and between periods) is all business. The bus rides, especially to the game, is a lot looser,” he said.

Remembering The Forgotten Poor Sara Lauzon Wayback Playback

Every single day without fail, a historic photo of Cornwall or a surrounding county is posted on my public Facebook page.

However, on Saturday, April 14, no pictures were posted, only words.

On June 1, 2017, I submitted a petition to the Canadian government asking them to recognize April 14 of every year as Poor House Commemoration Day in Canada. I had 120 days to gather, at minimum, 500 signatures of support. In total, 648 signatures were received. On November 8, 2017, the petition was presented and tabled in the House of Commons by local MP Guy Lauzon.

On January 29, 2018, I was informed of the governments response: “The Government of Canada does not have any current plans to officially designate the aforementioned date [as Poor House Commemoration Day in Canada.]”

On April 14, I wanted to remember and celebrate each and every Canadian Citizen and Immigrant that lived or died in an Asylum, a House of Refuge facility, or a Poor House on Canadian soil. Many of these people were buried in unmarked graves, with no family living to surround them and celebrate their lives. Some of the female

inmates were shunned by their families for being pregnant and unmarried. Many of these people were just too poor, and could not afford any means to get by. Many inmates were crippled, unable to work or fend for themselves, and some of them suffered from mental illnesses.

By April 14, 1937, Canadians and Immigrants who suffered from mental illnesses were entirely stripped of their property, managing their economic affairs, and their ability to reproduce. Not only had they lost their belongings, the right to own properties, but they were stripped of their right to have children. By April 14, they lost control of everything, including control over their own body.

On April 14, 1937, the “Act respecting the Mentally Incompetent Persons and their Estates” was passed in Alberta. This Act marked a growing intrusion of the state into the lives of those they deemed “mentally incompetent or unfit.” Canadian citizens in an asylum were no longer capable of managing their economic affairs. The government stripped these people of their own property.

Nine years prior to this act, the government of Alberta stripped their citizens of the ability to reproduce. On March 21, 1928, the Legislative Assembly of Alberta passed the “Sexual Sterilization Act.” This legislation authorized sexual sterilization to individuals living in designated state institutions (Asylums) deemed to have “undesirable traits.” The impact of the Sexual Sterilization

Act was substantial. Under this Act, over 4,800 people were sterilized. More than 2,800 persons were sterilized under its two amendments in 1937 and 1942.

Although you are reading this a few days after the fact, I hope you will take time to remember Canadian citizens that lived in

Asylums, a Houses of Refuge, and Poor Houses. I remembered them, I know you will remember them, and one day, Canada will remember

them

too.

Journée de la terre 2018 Communiqué de presse de la CRR CORNWALL, Ontario - La journée de la terre est devenue l’une des événements le plus populaires à la Conservation de la région Raisin (CRR).

Cependant, les réductions des subventions du gouvernement subit par la CRR ont mis cet événement en jeu. La CRR a décidé donc de demander l’appui de la communauté pour essayer de garder cet événement en vie.

Depuis 1999, la CRR a donné au gens de Cornwall et des environs au-dessus de 38 000 arbres en tout. Chaque année, 2000 conifères sont distribués à la Zone de conservation Gray’s Creek sur une base du premier arrivé premier servi. Cette année, l’événement est prévu le samedi 21 avril 2018 à partir de 10h00. Le personnel de la CRR et d’autres partenaires de la communauté se réunissent sur cette journée

pour promouvoir la bonne gestion de l’environnement et souligner l’importance des arbres et leurs contributions à notre environnement et santé humaine.

Le coût pour organiser l’événement et fournir les arbres est d’environ $2,000. Les commanditaires en échange auront leur logo affiché bien en vue lors de l’événement ainsi que d’apparaître dans notre dépliant « Journée de la terre » qui est distribué à environ 250 à 300 participants la journée de l’événement. Tous les commanditaires seront également reconnus pour leurs contributions dans un communiqué de presse et sur notre page Facebook.

Full of Beans: St. Matthew’s Church holds its first Chili Fundraiser

Provided by the family of Imelda Levac CORNWALL, Ontario Born in Marionville ON on April 9, 1912, Imelda is the last surviving member of the 10 children born to Isidore Lavictoire and Célima Belisle.

The family sold the farm and moved to Cornwall when Imelda was quite young. She attended Nativité girls’ school and, upon graduation, worked at the Cotton Mills until she married Eucher Levac on October 12, 1937.

The Levac family lived on a farm in St. Andrews West until Eucher’s health forced them to move their family to Cornwall in 1951, a few months before the birth of their eighth child. Imelda raised her big family and took care of her father-in-law as well as any other family member who needed a place to stay. Her home was known as the “House of Refuge”. She has 14 grandchildren, two step-granddaughters, 24 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

In her younger days, Imelda played the fiddle at weddings and parties. Her hobbies included knitting, making rosary bracelets, reading, and playing bingo. She maintained her own apartment until she was 98years old, them she spent four years with her daughter.

She is now a resident of St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre, where her family gathered to celebrate her milestone birthday. Imelda attributes her longevity to good genes, (her father lived for 102 years and four months), hard work, an occasional glass of beer, and most importantly, a deep faith in God. Her advice is “Love God and go your way”.

Mary McCann, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - The first Chili Fundraiser was held on Saturday, April 14 from 4-7 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Cornwall. The event involved a chili competition, followed by a shared meal by organizers, chefs, and attendees alike.

Organized and coordinated by Hellen McCallum, all funds from tickets sold for the event will go to Hospice Cornwall. McCallum says organization of the event began in January. Plans arose when fellow coordinator, Iris Swerdfeger, combined the idea of a fundraiser for Hospice with a chili competition already scheduled by Rita Witt of the same parish. McCallum also claims that, along with raising funds for Hospice, many volunteers are both fellow parishioners and members of the Swinging B’s squaredance club. She hopes that the event offers a welcoming atmosphere for those without a home parish who may be considering joining the church, as well as to spark an interest in square-dancing and joining the square-dancing community.

The contest involved 27 chilis by a variety of chefs, including vegetarian, mild, medium, spicy, as well as chili by local professional chefs – all of which were judged by 12 judges.

The organizers and volunteers are delighted with the outcome, particularly during the stormy weather, and hope to hold another chili dinner next year and make it a tradition. They are happy to offer a place for the community to gather over good food, and the opportunity to supply funds to a good cause in the process.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Prominent members of the Cornwall community found themselves under arrest this past Thursday, April 12.

It was all in good fun however, and for a good cause as a part of the second annual Jail & Bail fundraiser for the Hub for Beyond 21.

If someone was nominated for Jail & Bail, they would be picked up by the local police and brought to the “jail” at the Cornwall Square.

They would then be read their charge by the judge and given the bail amount they had to raise before they were released.

Bill Makinson for example, was charged with “hiding from the camera”. Big Brothers, Big Sisters Cornwall Executive Director Ron Graham was charged with “being overly involved in the community.”

There were 28 individuals brought-in in total, and organizer Shannon Savard hoped to raise a good amount of money for the cause.

Last year, Jail & Bail raised around $10, 000 for the Hub for Beyond 21.

The Hub for Beyond 21’s goal is to provide a space and an opportunity for adults with developmental disabilities to live connected and respected lives while contributing to the community.

The Hub for Beyond 21 must raise around $300,000 annually to meet its operating budget.

“I want people to know that we receive no government funding,” said event organizer Shannon Savard. “The money raised today will go towards participant activity fees, arts and crafts, lunches and more.”

In all, Beyond 21 serves 50 families.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The City of Cornwall is inviting residents to team-up to help make our community beautiful with Clean-up Day 2018.

Taking place on Saturday April 21 at the East End Police Station on Montreal Rd., residents are invited to drop off any garbage they wish to dispose of and the City will sort it and get it delivered to the dump.

This is the 10th anniversary of this clean-up event, which is being sponsored this year by the Le Village BIA and the Downtown BIA. In addition to City staff members, there will also be volunteers from the Adopt-a-Street program there to help out and to help people sign up for their program if they are interested in keeping their community clean on an ongoing basis.

“I think that it is a great opportunity for people who don’t have means or transportation to the landfill to dispose of waste at no cost to themselves,” said Danielle Watson, the City’s Waste Management Supervisor.

A local reader wonders why theatres in Cornwall don’t show any French movies? There is a fair sized French speaking population in Cornwall.

The pressure by the manufacturers to force auto dealers out of print advertising, has accelerated the commoditization of vehicles. Once I can buy it anywhere for the same price, why would I feel obliged to buy it from a local dealer.

Dealers used to advertise heavily in their local paper because it got results, and the newspaper covered events and charities, some sponsored by the dealer. People appreciated that and bought vehicles locally, partially as a result.

Many dealers have lost that competitive edge by just doing digital advertising. Put a human face on your dealership.

It is election season and the political landscape is shifting. In the provincial riding of Glengarry-Prescott_Russell, long-time MPP and a long-time fixture of North Glengarry politics Grant Crack is leaving the limelight saying that he won’t run again and that he is done with politics.

On the municipal level, North Glengarry Councillor Carma Williams is gunning for the Deputy Mayor job and in South Dundas, Evonne Delegarde has announced that she is running again.

Glengarry paleontologist George Kampouris unearthed a 440 million-year-old fossil.

Kampouris says that he found the fossil near Lake Simcoe north of Toronto. North Glengarry wood artisan Ben Williams created a beautiful mount for Kampouris’ fossil.

CORNWALL, Ontario - In an interview with Cornwall Seaway News the Department of National Defence (DND) confirmed that they had conducted a military training exercise in Cornwall at night on Tuesday, April 10, 2018.

The exercise included low-flying helicopters along the City of Cornwall’s waterfront as well as forces on the ground.

“Members of the Canadian Forces were

conducting valuable training exercises in an urban area which lends realism,” said Capt.

Jamie Donovan, Public Affairs Officer with the DND. It is because of this commitment to realism, that a general public notification about the exercise was not released.

Capt. Donovan explained that only the Cornwall Community Police Service, Cornwall City Hall and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne were informed of the exercise.

Donovan went on to explain that while it

might be unusual in Cornwall, this type of training is common in other parts of Canada.

He said that the training exercise was now over, and that the department would be reviewing its policy of not releasing a general notification for future exercises. He said that the DND apologized for any disruption or concern they may have caused to citizens who were unaware of what was going on.

Donovan said that he could not comment on what units were involved in the exercise or from which bases they were from.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Jody Burgess, 49, of Cornwall was arrested on April 10, 2018 and charged with uttering counterfeit money and breach of probation for attending a certain location and failing to keep the peace.

It is alleged on January 2, 2018 the man attended a Water Street business, despite his conditions, and gave clerks two counterfeit $20 American bills. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. On April 10, 2018 police located the man. He was taken into custody, charged accordingly and released to appear in court on May 15, 2018.
