Contact North and Akwesasne open new online learning centre Nick Seebruch AKWESASNE - For the first time in 10 years, Contact North is opening a new learning centre and it is doing it in Akwesasne.

Representatives from Contact North, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA), the Akwesasne Economic Development Agency and the Akwesasne Area Management Board met at the Peace Tree Trade Centre on Cornwall Island to celebrate the opening of the new Online Learning Centre.

The Online Learning Centre is the result of many months of work and planning.

“We want to encourage community members to complete their education in their community,” said Emily Lavigne, Online Learning Recruitment Office with Contact North. “They

can complete their education online or come into the Centre.”

The new Centre has online learning stations, as well as a video conferencing unit that allows students to get one-on-one tutoring remotely.

Maxime Jean-Louis, CEO of Contact North said he was proud to begin this new partnership in Akwesasne and open this new centre.

“This is the first centre Contact North has opened in 10 years,” he said. “The reason for this is that this particular community has convinced us of its potential.”

Dan Bruyere is the Director of Community Support Programs with the MCA and helped to bring Contact North to the community.

“We told them about our community and our needs,” he said. “We’re hoping at some point to expand into the Quebec part of Akwesasne.”

All foreign-language films are presented with English subtitles.

Nyman’s Shoe Store, Clark’s Shoe Store (which served Cornwall for 116 years and closed in 2012), Herman’s “Smart Women’s Sportwear and Dresses”, and Martin’s Ladies Wear. Clothing stores in other areas of Cornwall included: Canadian Men’s Wear (on Montreal Road), Schulman’s and Goldhamer’s Limited who both sold “Fine Clothes for Men and Boys”, Dover’s Men’s Wear at the corner of Pitt and Second, Levesque’s Children’s Wear at 29 Second Street East, and Cornwall Pants and Prince Clothing Company.

Other stores that were included throughout the advertisements were: The City Smoke Shop and The Terminal Smoke Shop both located at Second Street East, and both of Fullerton Drug Stores locations (Corner of Pitt and Second and 354 Montreal Road.) Both Cornwall East Side Dairy Company (on Race Street) and Rivermead Dairy (at 37 Cumberland Street) were listed as well.

History is all around us. History is the buildings that align Pitt Street, the stores that have come and gone, and can be found through the various writings that have been left behind... like in a Cook Book from 1958.

I have often been asked how I choose column ideas or projects to research. The truth is, these projects and subjects always seem to find me.

Earlier this week I was gifted a Cook Book from 1958. This faded blue soft covered book holds dozens upon dozens of recipes, with each submitter listed underneath their prized dish. What I found most exciting (aside from a sugar cookie recipe from the 1800s!), was the advertisements.

Unexpectedly, this Cook Book painted a picture of the different businesses that were around Cornwall in 1958.

On the first page of advertisements, Bingloe’s Furniture is listed. Bringloe’s was located at 21 Pitt Street, beside the Lloyd George Hotel. This section of buildings on Pitt Street was owned by partners Lloyd Gallinger and George Bringloe.

Today, the Cornwall Square stands in its place.

Other furniture stores listed were: Julius Miller Furniture Company, located at 136 Fourth Street East, and Pearson Furniture, located at 130 Sydney Street.

Some popular restaurants from the 50s included: Shirley’s Restaurant (near the bus terminal), the Cornwallis Hotel which was demolished in 1982, and the Jade Garden Restaurant at 25 Second Street East. I know many of you will remember #17 from the menu at the Jade Garden!

I am amazed at how many shoe and clothing stores Cornwall had in the 50s. I think it comes as no surprise that the majority of these stores were located on Pitt Street: Well’s Shoe Shoppe Limited, The Marilyn Shoppe (ladies wear),

Snyder hanging it up after almost 40 years After almost 40 years as a member of the Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) S/Sgt. Brian Snyder is hanging it up.

He says that he had been thinking about retirement over the Christmas holidays, but that there was no other reason for choosing to retire now other than it was the right time.

“People say you’ll know when its time and it was like an epiphany, it was time,” he said.

Snyder got his start with the Cornwall Police in 1979, after working a year with Cornwall Transit, so in total, he has been a City employee for 40 years.

When he began his career with the police one of his duties was to walk the beat. The job of the cops on the street at night in those days was to check the backdoors and front doors of businesses to ensure that they were locked and that no one was trying to break-in. Although the CCPS try to have foot patrol it does not occur as often as they would like.

Snyder explained that a lot has changed for police in the past 40 years. For one, technology with computers in cars, encrypted radio systems and Dictaphone has increased the speed of their calls for service.

There was also the introduction of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982, which changed the way that the police interact with suspects.

“We all thought as police officers that we’d never get another admission,” he said. “We thought it would hinder us, but it really hasn’t.”

Snyder has worn many hats and worked many areas in his time at the CCPS. He has worked in uniform patrol, courts, the sexual assault and child abuse division, professional standards, criminal investigation, the polygraph section and the executive bureau.

He also partnered with the OPP and the RCMP through a Joint Force Operation in the early nineties to keep drugs off the streets.

“They are all in their own way gratifying,” he said. “However, I always felt that my strength was doing detective work.”

Currently S/Sgt. Snyder oversees Crime Reduction, Community Partnerships, Youth and Media Relations. He feels that in the years he has been on the service, the CCPS has done a great job in focusing on our youth and has helped to get many on the right track.

Through his work as a police officer and outside of it, Snyder has tried to give back to the community.

S/Sgt. Snyder is the Chair of the Cornwall SDG Situation Table advisory committee and proud of its accomplishments. A Situation Table is a regular meeting where specially trained participants work together to reduce the chances that anybody in the community will experience harm from a combination of risk factors that heighten the chances of imminent victimization. There are presently 14 agencies that meet weekly to assist people and families. Snyder said, “I’m very proud of the work we have done to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the most vulnerable in our community”.

In 1996, with Snyder’s help, the CCPS was the

first police service in Ontario to host the Special Olympic Provincial Games. It was the first time that the games turned a profit. “I’m proud to say that other police agencies have continuing that tradition to this day”. The CCPS raised $800,000 for the Games that year.

Although Snyder is best known for his 30 years of volunteering for the Law Enforcement Torch run and Special Olympics he has help many other charities. He was the Chair for the AGAPE centre and helped raised many thousands of dollars for the Childrens treatment centre and the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation to name a few.

Snyder has also been recognized with several awards throughout his career including: the St. John Ambulance Meritorious Certificate of Bravery for saving the life of a young girl who had fallen through the ice in Cornwall Harbour in 1996; Optimist international police officer of the year; the Special Olympics Hall of Fame, the International Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame; the Police Exemplary Service Medals; Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee medal ; The Paul Harris Fellow Award and he is a member of the Order of Merit for police.

In 2013 Snyder was honoured by Canadian Special Olympics with the Rob Plunkett Law Enforcement Torch Run Award and in 2015 he was named Citizen of the Year by the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce.

“The community has done so much for me,” said Snyder. “I felt it was necessary to try and give back.”

He believes that going forward the CCPS will

“Cornwall has been second to none in training our officers, providing the best tools to perform their duties and being involved with our community; I don’t see that changing,” he said.

Snyder said that his career and service would not have been possible without the support of his family, colleagues and the community.

“I want to thank my family and the community for what they’ve allowed me to do,” he said. “It has been a great ride. Thank you to the Cornwall Police for letting me be a part of it.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - Richard Zeran, 48, of Cornwall was arrested on Jan. 12, 2018 on the strength of a warrant. It is alleged while driving a dirt bike on Sept. 10, 2017 the man who is disqualified from driving failed to stop for police and drove in a dangerous manner in the area of Prince Arthur St. A warrant was then obtained for his arrest.

On Jan. 12, 2018 the man was spotted on York Street by a member of the Cornwall Community Police service. He was taken into custody on the strength of the warrant and held for a bail hearing.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Marc Racine, 42, of St. Andrews was arrested on Jan. 13, 2018 and charged with breach of undertaking for being outside his residence between the hours of 10pm and 6am and for failing to keep the peace.

It is alleged in the early morning hours of Jan. 13, 2018 the man was spotted in breach of his conditions. He was taken into custody during a traffic stop, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing.

FRAUD OVER $5,000 CORNWALL, Ontario - Gilles Saucier, 56, of Brampton was arrested on Jan. 18, 2018 and charged with fraud over $5,000, breach of trust, misappropriation of funds and use of forged document.

It is alleged the man fraudulently obtained money from an investment client and police were contacted to investigate. On Jan. 18, 2018 the man was taken into custody at the Cornwall Courthouse, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Joseph Johnson, 51, of Cornwall was arrested on January 12, 2018 and charged with assault cause bodily harm. It is alleged during an argument on Jan. 12, 2018 the man assaulted a 58-year-old Man known to him causing an injury that required medical attention. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. During the investigation the man was taken into custody, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing.

Akwesasne arena fire declared suspicious and fire crews acted quickly to contain the fire.

However, smoke damage and soot throughout most of the arena will take several weeks to months to repair and clean. Therefore, the ice season this winter is over and an opening date for the spring will be announced when determined.

At this time, the fire has been deemed suspicious and is under investigation.

“We are extremely grateful that those inside the building were quickly evacuated and no injuries occurred,” said Grand Chief Abram Benedict. “We are also very appreciative of the quick response of both local and surrounding

first responders who helped to ensure the fire was contained quickly, ultimately saving the arena from irreparable damage. Our partnerships and working relationships with these agencies is vital to the safety of our community members and buildings.”

Along with the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department and Akwesasne Mohawk Police, other agencies responded to the fire as well including the Akwesasne Mohawk Ambulance, Cornwall City Fire Department, Bombay Fire Department and Fort Covington Fire Department. AKWESASNE - The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) is announcing the unfortunate update that the A’nowara’kowa Arena will be closed for remainder of the winter/ice season.

On Friday, January 19, 2018 at approximately 3 p.m., the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service (AMPS) and Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department (HAVFD) were dispatched to a report of a fire at the arena, located on Phillip Hopps Memorial Road, Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island.) The fire was reported to be in one of the locker rooms.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Filmfest 2018 will take viewers on a trip around the world and through a variety of film styles. There are films from France, the UK, Israel, Sweden and Switzerland.

There are seven films in all ranging from comedies, to serious dramas, to somewhere in between.

Filmfest is a great opportunity to experience movies that might not otherwise be seen in the community of Cornwall and SD&G. “When the concept came up, it was about bringing in films the community wouldn’t have access to,” said Janet Martel, General Manager for the Aultsville Theatre.

Committee member Andréa Fillion explained that the goal of the film selection is

“We seek out films that are very different from one another and come from a wide arrange of backgrounds,” she said.

This year marks the twelfth year of the Filmfest, and funding raised by the festival this year will go toward Aultsville Theatre’s capital projects fund. Specifically, Aultsville is in need of a new lighting system as the current one has been in place since the 1970s.

Filmfest runs from Jan. 26 to Jan. 28.

Tickets are available at the Civic Complex Box Office. Tickets are $15 per film or $125 for a weekend pass. For more information call 613938-9400. Tickets are also available at Aultsville Theatre one hour before each screening.

NASA astronaut blasting off in space has strong connection to Cornwall Sultan Jessa

CORNWALL, Ontario - The veteran American/ Canadian astronaut blasting off in space next month has strong Cornwall connections.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have assigned Andrew Jay Feustel and first-flight astronaut Jeannette Epps to missions abroad the International Space Station.

Feustel is married to Indira Bhatnagar, a speech language pathologist who grew up and lived in Cornwall for years with her parents Vijay and Alena.

The astronaut will launch for the six-month expedition will blast off from Baikonur, Kazakhstan March 15.

This will be Feustel’s first long-distance mission serving as flight engineer on Expedition 55, and later as commander of Expedition 56.

Epps will become the first African-American space station crew member when she launches on her first space in May 2018.

She will join Feustel as a flight engineer and remain on board for Expedition 57.

“Each space station crew member brings something different to the table and Drew (Andrew) and Jeannette both has a lot to offer,” said Chris Cassidy, chief of the astronaut office at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

“The space center will benefit from having them on board.”

A native of Lake Onon, Michigan, Feustel was selected as part of the 2000 astronaut class and in 2009, flew on the space shuttle Atlantis for the final servicing mission of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.

He made his first trip to the space station in

2011.

Feustel attended a number of universities in the United States and also studied specialization in seismology from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.

He met Indira in Kingston.

Feustel and Epps will join will join a long and distinguished line of astronauts who have crewed the International Space Station since November 2000.

So far more than 200 astronauts have visited the space station.

Epps is from Syracuse, New York.

She spent seven years as a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as a technical intelligence officer before being selected as a member of the 2009 astronaut class.

Big Brothers/ Big Sisters Cornwall has a new Executive Director Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The new Executive Director of Big Brothers/ Big Sisters (BBBS) Cornwall has a long history with the organization.

Ron Graham was one of the first matches for the Cornwall chapter in 1973 at the age of seven. Graham said that he entered the Big Brother program after his father passed away to find a male mentor.

He found one in Wilford Tyo, who Graham says taught him skills like woodworking, hunting and fishing. Wilford Tyo was named Big Brother of the Year in 1973.

Graham himself became a Big Brother later in life and remained close with his Big and his Little throughout his life.

Graham has been involved with BBBS Cornwall throughout the years. In addition to being a Little Brother and a Big Brother, he has also been a member of BBBS Cornwall’s governing board, and has served as its president, he was on the nominating committee for Big of the Year and, with his Big Brother Wilford, served as honourary chair of Bowling for Kids Sake.

Tim Horton’s Bowling for Kids Sake is in its 40th year. Graham has been on the job for less than a week and said that one of his immediate focuses is to make sure that this year’s Tim Horton’s Bowling for Kids Sake is another success. In the International Contest, club contestants vie for first place by giving a 5 – 7-minute originally prepared speech on a topic of their choice.

The winner of the International Speech contest will progress to the next level, which is the Area level, then on to the Division and District levels, all the way to the world champion at this year’s Convention in Chicago. The Wonderful World of Whisky show is returning to Cornwall CORNWALL, Ontario - The World of Whisky show is growing off of last year’s success.

This year will see more events, more master classes and more titans from the whisky world come to Cornwall to celebrate the brown spirit.

World of Whisky show creator Ian Bentley Is excited that these renowned whisky connoisseurs are coming to the Nav Centre and are coming to Cornwall.

Taking place on Saturday, March 24, there are 500 tickets in total for this year’s World of Whisky show and so far, 300 are already sold as of Jan.18.

Starting at 1 p.m. and throughout the afternoon will be the Whisky Master Classes. There are three times the master classes at this year’s show than there were in 2017.

Master classes include a class for “The Whisky Explorer” presented by Cornwall’s own Mike Brisebois, Kilchoman – A Liquid History with Emmett Hossack (whiskyscores.com), the Lost Taste of Speyside with Bill Somerville, Whisky Family Feud with the Whisky Lassie, Johanne

Bill 181, The Municipal Elections Modernization Act, 2016, came into effect June 9, 2016 and makes changes to the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 for the 2018 municipal election.

Where to cap the cuts?

Last Friday, the City of Cornwall’s budget committee chose to slash the City’s grant and in-kind service budget.

This money goes to support community programs that range from everything like the arts, to the Agape Centre, to local sports.

I understand that the City of Cornwall is facing tough financial times, this has been an ongoing theme for the past couple of years, but without adequate funding for these local community programs, there will be a lot less flavour in our community.

Its like making a cake and leaving off the icing, sure you made the cake, but its not going to taste as good.

The residential tax increase that Council is facing will likely be steep, but that, and the upcoming municipal election, should not lead to councillors cutting blindly.

I feel that is exactly what happened in this case, that council cut the community grants blindly.

Council began their deliberations by immediately considering a cap on this budget outright at $162, 000. That motion failed.

Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy felt that each

applicant should have been allowed to present to council and make their case for why they were deserving of the money they asked for.

I think this would have been a fair approach.

Council should know more about why these community organizations are asking for the money they are asking for.

With that in mind, the public should know more about what their budget committee and their council are cutting from their community.

Councillors like Elaine MacDonald have mentioned before that Council itself should do a better job of informing the public on how their tax dollars are spent.

Residents also should be more engaged in the budget process. If they feel that the tax rate is too high, then they should look at the budget and lobby council. Tell them what should stay and what should go. I often hear that taxes are too high, but I rarely hear a concrete dollar amount that should be cut from the City budget.

Ultimately, the community grants budget was dealt with in one day on a case, by case basis.

Organizations like the BMX Club got all they asked for, others like Your Arts Council and Centre Culturel got money as well, but only fractions of what they asked for.

A request for $5, 000 for the Senior Boys

2018 OFSAA Championship was denied.

In all, the budget committee decided to approve $56, 000 worth of grants out of the requested $193, 000. The committee approved $9,000 less than last year. And they thought they would have to cap it at $162, 000?

How about instead of a cap, council enacts a mandatory minimum? There are somethings in the realm of sports, the arts and culture that are worth funding and that the municipality should be investing in instead of cutting at all costs.

Sometimes the last place a victim finds justice is the justice system.

And so it is for a Cornwall man, Robert Cadieux, whose wife, Kristine, was killed in a crash on Highway 401 just west of the city last summer.

The 20-year-old driver of the car that crashed into the rear of the Cadieux van and sent it rolling into a ditch was charged with careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act. Police said the man had fallen asleep at the wheel.

On Jan. 9 the driver appeared before a justice of the peace. He had two previous court appearances. According to Postmedia a paralegal served as prosecutor. The accused, who represented himself, entered a guilty plea. The JP fined him $2,000. He was given 18 months to pay. Then he drove back to Quebec. Yes, drove. His licence was not suspended.

Three days later Cadieux was invited to a meeting at the court house. He thought it was to discuss the upcoming trial and his victim impact statement, which is part of the healing process.

Not so. It was to inform him the case had been settled. And, by the way, if you want to fill out an impact statement, here are the forms.

What a callous back-handed slap in the face.

Interesting that the accused had a family member in court for support, while the family of the victim was overlooked. Tells something about the system and its treatment of victims.

When the public inquiry was rolling along a few years back, two witnesses who were victims of sexual assault told how they were mistreated

by the court system. In each case they were not notified that one of those saving court time plea deals had been struck. They found out about the guilty plea and sentence in the newspaper. They were denied the opportunity of providing an impact statement. For the court system, one of those ho-hum moments.

If there is a thread of good news for Robert Cadieux and his kids it is that the Crown plans to appeal the sentence.

And how about an official apology ... in writing.

The acting title kicks in when the chief is away for more than 28 consecutive days. ... Belleville has received a $736,285 cheque from the new Shorelines Casino as part a non-tax gaming revenue payment. And that is just for the third quarter of 2017. ... Sarnia Police Commission is looking for a new chief and deputy chief, both of whom will retire this spring.

The commission has brought the police association onboard to help with an internal search to fill both positions.

THIS AND THAT During the height of the Cold War - 1950s and ‘60s - a malfunction set off the two air raid sirens set up in the city (one was on the Bell Telephone building on Pitt Street).

Unlike what happened in Hawaii, there was no panic. In fact the police switchboard was swamped with calls from folks wanting to know what the ear-piercing wail was about. This was a

time when the city had a civil defence co-ordinator who kept the population up to speed on what to do if the Ruskies nuked Ottawa and the St. Lawrence Seaway. Things like crawling under a school desk, falling on the ground face down and covering the back of your head, hiding out in the cellar, etc. The basement of the post office (now the public library) was set up as a nuclear attack shelter stocked with cots, cans of food and water for all the important people. I’m told it was a short list. **************** Today, a three-cent increase wouldn’t be noticed. But for some Cornwall families in 1966 it was a jolt to the tight household budget.

Minimum wage was 90 cents an hour. A good job paid $2.20 an hour.

So, the three-cent increase in the price of a quart of milk - this is when it was delivered by a milkman in glass bottles and really was a quart raised concerns the spike would cause hardship for many large, lower income Cornwall families that purchased several quarts a day. This was a time when a family with six or seven kids under the age of 16 wasn’t uncommon.

A story on the price increase noted that the 13-member George Tyo family had seven quarts of milk delivered to their Vimy Avenue family home six days a week, a total of 42 quarts a week.

two-year term. ... Cornwall Collegiate Institute Board announced that the new $3.9 million school on Cumberland Street would be named General Vanier Secondary School. ... North End Social Club annual winter carnival named its royal court - Louise Deschamps, queen; Mary Cotnam and Joan Ratelle, princesses. ... The body of a popular priest, Rev. Herbert Seguin, was recovered from the St. Lawrence River near Summerstown. The 36-year-old pastor of Canadian Martyrs Church drowned when his snowmobile crashed through the ice. ... The most popular names among the 2,450 babies born at the General and Hotel Dieu in 1965 were Robert, John and Diane. ... An Air Canada Ottawa-Tampa return flight was $152. ... Kentucky Fried Chicken outlets on Montreal Road and Augustus Street had Snack-Pac’s for 69 cents. ... The Royals “Punch Line” of Jean Payette, Wayne Horne and Bill Snelgrove had a total of 127 points in 24 Central Junior Hockey League games.

TRIVIA ANSWER Before Derek Drouin won gold at the 2016 Summer Games, Cornwall native Duncan McNaughton was the only Canadian high jumper to win Olympic gold. He did it at the 1932 Los Angeles Games. McNaughton left Cornwall at a young age and grew up in California.

He attended UCLA. However, because he was born in Canada, he was allowed to compete for this country. McNaughton died in 1998.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Less than a month into the new year, the CrossFit room at Summit Health and Fitness was filled with more fervour than usual on a Saturday morning.

Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that Long Sault’s beloved Sens alumni, Jesse Winchester was leading a workout with personal trainer, Jason Dennis. The event is an extension of Winchester’s partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) and is part of the Hockey

Fights Cancer campaign.

“The whole purpose of the event is to promote physical activity as a preventative measure for cancer,” said Allison St. Jean, Community Fundraising Specialist for CCS. “We’re trying to provide people with the tools to live a healthier life.”

The workout was split into two 45-minute groups, and had everyone – Winchester included, sweating it out for the cause.

“I’ve skated and kept active, but I haven’t been to the gym in a while,” said Winchester. “To feel that kind of pain is definitely welcomed for

Cette belle aventure a commencé au mois de novembre. Une pièce de théâtre se prépare à l’école Rose des Vents. Les deux classes de 6e année s’embarquent dans un beau projet de pièce de théâtre. Mesdames Pauline Laneville, Mélanie Quesnel et France Sabourin étaient les enseignantes de l’école qui ont porté ce beau projet à terme. Afin de déterminer qui aurait les divers rôles dans la pièce, des auditions eurent lieu. Durant les semaines précédentes la représentation tous les midis furent consacrés à des pratiques. Durant les pratiques, des lectures étaient faites pour comprendre les rôles et analyser les personnages et après quelques semaines, les rôles furent distribués.

Le titre de la pièce était: La boutique de jouets par l’auteure Véronique Filion. Tous les élèves des deux groupes de 6e année ont eu une responsabilité: 20 comédiens, certains s’occupaient des décors, 2 se sont occupés du son et de la musique et 3 élèves étaient des éclairagistes.

La pièce racontait l’histoire d’un vendeur de jouets (alias le Père Noël) qui parle à ses jouets et les aime comme des êtres vivants. Quelle chance ont eu ces élèves d’avoir des enseignantes passionnées de théâtre et de culture! Quelle chance nous avons eu de pouvoir assister Ce monsieur Noël aime aussi prendre bien soin de ses clients.

Il y eut 2 représentations de la pièce pour les élèves et à un si beau spectacle avant nos vacances de Noël! les parents de l’école au mois de décembre. Afin que ces 2 Bravo à tous les élèves et bravo aux enseignantes! représentations soient un succès plusieurs ont mis la main à la pâte: des parents ont prêté des costumes, des élèves ont cherché des costumes, les décors ont été montés/fabriqués par des élèves et des enseignantes. Il y a aussi eu une chorégraphie inventée par des élèves de 6e année.

L’objectif de l’activité ; ramasser des fonds pour assurer la viabilité de la cocathédrale de la Nativité de la Bienheureuse Vierge Marie. À l’intérieur le R. P. Emmanuel Ngiruwonsanga accueillait les convives avec un sourire radieux tout en leur offrant une assiette. À l’entrée de la cuisine les Chevaliers de Colomb servaient un repas copieux. À l’autre extrémité de la salle, une table étalait une variété de chandails à vendre sur lesquels on pouvait remarquer le logotype évident « La Nativité, j’y crois ».

Dans cette salle qui bourdonnait d’activité on remarquait la présence de personnes de tout âge, en particulier celle des jeunes familles. On apercevait aussi M. Guy Lauzon le député fédéral, Mme Chantale Lajoie, la directrice générale de la Caisse populaire d’Alexandria / Cornwall, des membres du clergé et des représentants de la garde de la Nativité.

Pour couronner l’activité, Mme Jeannine Poirier et M Gérard St-Amour présentèrent un chèque de 500$ chacun pour aider financièrement aux initiatives de la collecte de fonds.

Avant de laisser le micro, ces deux personnes, dont l’acte de charité est important et précieux, invitèrent les personnes présentes à faire de même.

Le défi était lancé.

Cette soirée mémorable animée par de nombreux bénévoles, femmes et hommes, fut un grand succès et les retombées seront sans doute très positives.

Remembering the nurses of the General Hospital CORNWALL, Ontario - From 1897 to 1969, Registered Nurses and Registered Nurse Assistants were trained in the Cornwall General Hospital.

In 2004, the Cornwall General Hospital (CGH) closed and was amalgamated with the Hotel Dieu Hospital into the new Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH).

Services slowly wound down at CGH and the building became empty for several years until developers Matt Cinnamon and Dan Orr bought the property and transformed it into the Care Centre. The Care Centre is a senior’s residence that currently has 30 members.

Now Cinnamon and Orr are offering to help members of the Cornwall General Hospital Nurses Alumni Association commemorate their history at the hospital.

The Association and the Cornwall Community Museum will be decorating two hallways with class pictures and memorabilia from the nurse’s program with the consent of Cinnamon and Orr. The class pictures for all of the Registered Nurses and all of the Registered Nurses Assistants have been taken out of storage and put into three large frames that will adorn the hallways. Also included will be a list of donors to the program, old photos of the hospital and other items provided by the Cornwall Community Museum.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth

centuries, every hospital had their own nursing education program. The first nurses to graduate from the program at the CGH graduated in 1901. The last class of Registered Nurses at the Cornwall General Hospital graduated in 1969, after which the program was replaced by the Registered Nurses Assistant program.

“It was a wonderful hospital,” said Catherine Poirier, President of the Cornwall General Hospital Nurses Alumni Association. “They were very very good to us. We worked for the hospital, they looked out for us. The food was free, our uniforms were free, it was a great education for very little money.”

Don Smith, Manager/ Associate Curator of the Cornwall Community Museum said that this is an opportunity to remember one of Cornwall’s original hospitals.

“This can be a true representation of a historical aspect of our community,” he said.

He pointed out that the Hotel Dieu Hospital, which also opened in 1897 and was consolidated with the Cornwall General to form the CCH, already has a commemoration for their nurse’s program at the Hotel Dieu’s original site, which is now St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre.

“The vision of our group is that this is not a memorial, but a place of honour,” said Sharon Porter, a member of the last Registered Nurse class at the CGH.

The Cornwall General Hospital Nurses Alumni Association and the Cornwall Community Museum are partnering to commemorate the nurses and nursing assistants who graduated from the program at the General Hospital, which is now known as the Care Centre. The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) is seeking a responsible, customer-focused retailer to operate an LCBO Agency Store in Finch.

To qualify, the applicant must have an existing, currently operating retail business in the community and commit to operating the Agency store within established LCBO guidelines. To facilitate the sale of beverage alcohol products, the operator may be required to enter into separate commercial arrangements with the LCBO and domestic beer suppliers. The successful applicant will also be required to participate in a special LCBO server-training program to ensure the responsible sale of beverage alcohol products.

Supportive Housing Attendant Outreach Assisted Living for High Risk Seniors

Since 1962, the LCBO has authorized more than 200 Agency stores to serve communities that have requested service but where the local population is too small to support a regular LCBO or beer store. These Agency stores are operated by local retailers within their existing retail business. Agency store contracts are normally awarded for a five-year term. In communities where there is currently an Agency store, as the contract nears expiry, the LCBO will take into consideration the fact that new businesses in the community may have been established and will allow an opportunity for all businesses in the community to compete for the next five-year term.

Aging at Home Transportation

Operating an LCBO Agency Store provides a retailer with an excellent opportunity to increase revenue and attract customers while providing local residents with beverage alcohol services.

Agency stores also deliver economic benefits to the community in many cases through job creation and increased customer traffic for local merchants.
