Xplornet officially opens new offices in Cornwall CORNWALL, Ontario - Xplornet officially opened their new offices in the Cotton Mills in Cornwall on Oct. 12. They held a ribbon cutting event that day with most of their employees and local dignitaries. The company had announced back in October 2016 that they would be investing upwards of $40 million to build a regional office in Cornwall. The decision to invest in Cornwall actually goes back almost two years when Xplornet was originally scouting the location. “We realized when we came to Cornwall and toured the location, we realized it would fit our rural vision,” said Xplornet Vice President Cathy MacDonald. Xplornet moved into and renovated a space in the Cotton Mills large enough to fit their 130 employees and then some. Xplornet has 335, 000 subscribers and their regional office in Cornwall will employee technical support workers for that client base. English speaking support workers start work at $15.34 an hour and that increases to $17.34
an hour for billingual employees. Xplornet President and CEO Allison Lenehan explained that the company has grown quickly since the move. “We’re about out of space here and its a good indicator and I’m going to have to talk to Mr. Mayor about bringing more jobs here in the near future,” said Lenehan. Cornwall Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy was impressed with the renovation at the Cotton Mills and with Xplornet’s committment. “I would love to have a home that looks like this,” said O’Shaughnessy. “This says a lot about our community. It recognizes their confidence in our community and their confidence in our workforce.” Xplornet has already been involved in supporting local causes in the community. They were sponsors at the United Way’s Handbag for Heroes event and will be sponsoring their Wine & Cheese in November. At the ribbon cutting ceremony Cathy MacDonald presented Lori Greer, Executive Director of the United Way with a $1, 500 cheque on behalf of Xplornet.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The City of Cornwall deployed their Urgent Response Command Centre on Thursday after a series of watermain breaks on Vincent Massey Dr. in the Tollgate Rd. area. The breaks left some residents without water for more than a day. The command centre was on the scene and providing bottled water to residents. Tollgate Rd. at Vincent Massey remained closed until late Friday evening.
CORNWALL, Ontario - Bradley Stephenson, 24, of Cornwall was arrested on Oct. 13, 2017 and charged with break and enter and breach of probation for failing to keep the peace. It is alleged between Oct. 11, 2017 and Oct. 12, 2017 the man forced his way into a Vincent Massey Drive business and removed merchandise.

College Union goes on strike CORNWALL, Ontario - The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), which represents college faculty members voted on the evening of Sunday, Oct. 15 to go on strike.The strike means that all full-time college classes are cancelled at colleges across the province of Ontario, including at St. Lawrence College’s Cornwall campus which has approximately 1, 300 students.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Terri Thompson, originally from Cornwall will be appearing on the Great Canadian Baking Show, which airs this Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 8 p.m. on the CBC. When Terri first heard about the casting call for this televised baking contest, she first suggested it to a friend, but then thought she would tackle this challenge herself. “I wanted to do it for my kids and to show them that it was alright to take chances,” said Terri in an interview with Seaway News. Terri explained that she started baking in a grocery store bakery as a job during college, and it was there that she learned how much better things could taste if they were made fresh and from scratch. Her passion for baking grew after her husband was injured in a workplace accident. Terri’s husband had always loved baked goods and
Terri began cooking more after he was injured. “He loves baked goods,” she said. “Baking became a stress reliever.” Terri explained that when she was called up for the Great Canadian Baking show, she was a little nervous at first. “There were definitely things I knew would be a stumbling block going in,” she said. “I’ve always been into breads and making things taste great and not necessarily making them look fancy.” Terri said that her most popular creations are her pecan sticky rolls, which are a family favourite and something that guests always ask for. Terri is a full-time mom and is a coach for her daughters basketball team and she currently resides in Sherwood Park, Alberta. She says she will be ready to watch herself on TV when the show airs, but might hide under the covers for some parts.

Long serving Priest has died
pilgrimages to Medjugorje. Fr. Cameron was a great story teller and historian who utilized these gifts during his homilies. He cared for the people he served and he will be missed. The Solemn Translation from Wilson Funeral Home to St. Andrew’s Parish will take place on
Father Bernard (Bernie) Cameron He remained as pastor until his retirment in October 2013. Following his retirement, Fr. Cameron regularly replaced his fellow priests when they had to be absent from their parish. He very much enjoyed this phase of his priesthood until his health forced a permanent retirement. During his nearly six decades as a priest, Fr. Cameron contributed to diocesan life by taking on a number of pastoral services, including professor of religious instruction at CCVS and General Vanier, Spiritual Advisor to the Diocesan Council of the Catholic Women’s League and Diocesan Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus. He also held positions of responsibility among his brother priests as Dean on several occasions and Co-Chairman of the Diocesan Synod. Fr. Cameron will be remembered for his life of service and dedication in our Diocese. He will also be remembered for his great devotion to the Virgin Mary and in particular Our Lady of Medjugorje, having led more than a dozen

ST. ANDREWS, Ontario - On Sunday, October 15, 2017, Father Bernard (Bernie) Cameron died at the Cornwall Community Hospital. He had not been well during the last two years. Fr. Bernie, as he was affectionately known, was born in St. Andrews West on April 15, 1933. He was one of 10 children, 7 boys and 3 girls, born to Alexander and Helen (MacDonell) Cameron. He attended St. Andrew’s Private High School and later, Scarboro’s Nazareth House in St. Marys, Ontario. He attended le Grand Séminaire de Saint Sulpice in Montreal where he obtained his Bachelor in Theology. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall at St. Andrew’s Parish on May 30, 1958 by Bishop Rosario Brodeur. His first assignment was Curate at St. Columban’s Parish where he remained for three years before being given charge of his first parish in 1961, St. Catherine of Sienna in Greenfield. During his more than 59 years of priesthood, he served in many of the Diocese’s English language parishes including St. Mary’s in Williamstown, Blessed Sacrament in Cornwall, St. Columban’s in Cornwall, Our Lady of Grace in Ingleside, St. Pius X in Long Sault, St. Alexander’s in Lochiel, St. Catherine of Sienna in Greenfield, St. Anthony’s in Apple Hill and St. Michael’s in Monkland. In addition, he served 10 years as rector of the Cathedral of St. Finnan’s in Alexandria. In 2001, his long held dream of pastoring in his home parish was finally realized when he was named to St. Andrew’s.

Former Sears employee asks MP to help with pensions

CORNWALL, Ontario - Former Sears employee Sydney Gardiner is asking Stormont, Dundas and South Glengary MP Guy Lauzon to address the challenges created by the Sears Canada bankruptcy On Friday, Oct. 13, the Ontario Superior Court approved a motion by Sears to liquidate all of its remaining stores in Canada. The bankruptcy will leave 12, 000 Sears Canada employees without a job and threaten the pensions of former employees as the company struggles to pay off its creditors. “Why don’t we have pension protection in Canada,” asked Gardiner. “They have it in Europe, they have it in the States, so why not here?” Gardiner is asking MP Guy Lauzon to be present during a hearing on protecting worker pensions in Canada.
“I want our MP to sit in on it and hear what we need to do to protect workers in our country,” he said. The bill was proposed by Scott Duvall, the NDP’s Pension’s critic. Duvall objects to the fact that Sears is paying $7.6 million to 43 executives while former employees are receiving no severance pay. “This is shameful and obscene. How does Sears justify paying performance bonuses to top executives of a company that is filing for bankruptcy?” said Scott Duvall, in July. “That money should be going to the thousands of workers who have just lost their jobs.” CARP, formerly known as the Canadian Association for Retired Persons, will be making a presentation to Parliament on the bill on Oct. 25. “Canada’s bankruptcy laws must change to recognize that after employees, pensioners have top claim to any remaining assets until their pensions are fully funded,” said Wanda Morris, VP of Advocacy for CARP in a press release on their website in July. “Just because a company fails doesn’t mean its current and future pensioners should lose their retirement security too. All Canadians bear the costs when pensioners lose retirement income.” Gardiner went on to explain that one of the things that bothered him in the saga that lead to the collapse of Sears Canada was the fact that

and be present for the upcoming hearing on pension protection. Seaway News had reached out to Guy Lauzon’s office for a comment on this topic. Lauzon’s Chief of Staff Adrian Bugelli stated that Lauzon would be at the hearing on Oct. 25, but had no stance ion Duvall’s bill as of yet because while Duvall has proposed the bill, no formal legislation has been tabled yet.

Students getting stiffed

Colleges across the Province of Ontario were paralyzed on Monday morning when the strike by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) came into effect. The strike has cancelled all classes for the foreseeable future while the teachers take to the picket lines. Union members are striking for better pay and conditions. The union wants a larger say in the curricullum and more contract workers in the workforce. Glenn Vollebregt, President and CEO of St. Lawrence College, told me in an interview over the phone that in 12 years, students have never lost a semester to a strike. Some students however feel that through no fault of their own they are now losing some of the financial investment that they have made in higher education. A petition circulating on Change.org started
by Ontario college students is demanding that their institutions refund them some of the money they paid upfront for this semester. The petition states that since an average college semester is 13 weeks, and the average tuition this year was $5, 000 that they should be reimbursed $30 for every day that the strike keeps them out of class. There are over 500, 000 college students in Ontario, both full and part-time and around 50, 000 of them so far have signed this petition. I think that the students are absolutely right in asking for their money back. They paid a significant cost up front and the promised experience is not being delivered. These students have paid to be in class right now and they’re not, so whether the strike ends tomorrow or in January, the schools should reimburse their students for everyday of class they fail to deliver.

Dear Sir: As the advocate, for those who have lost their driving privileges through a stroke or other medical reasons, I worked for many days, weeks, months, years to bring back the lost driverretesting facility to Cornwall. Now the facility has been returned to our city I must admit to feeling all of my efforts have paid good dividends. My letters to the MTO and the Premier were so constant they almost wrote themselves. Those who have become disadvantaged, through events not of their own making, might now become more content with their lot in life. As a younger person it is quite easy to take for granted the use of a motor vehicle. However, as one ages, the use of a motor vehicle gains importance. In a country largely devoid of public transit, with the countryside seeming to stretch forever, the need for mobility becomes ever more a necessity. This necessity covers the
need to go shopping, to visit family and friends or to keep medical appointments, all important parts of our lives. The need to be able to drive transcends age and medical barriers for the only additional need a younger driver may add, to that of a retired person’s needs, is to carry the driver to a place of employment. No matter the age, we all need to shop, to visit friends and relations, to keep appointments, etc, etc. We can be thankful that DAC Medical-Vision, an incredibly dedicated company with a very long history, took up the mantle when the MTO, due to the constant pressure I put them under, came calling. We can also count ourselves lucky the Riverdale Terrace Retirement Home accepted my request they host this program. However, credit where credit is due, the Seaway Valley Health Unit did, when I approached them, offer to accommodate the company. It is important to recognize, when traveling
the highways and byways of this vast country, senior drivers are ever conscious of the value of being able to drive and tend to follow the rules of the road. Senior drivers will rarely exceed the speed limit, rarely ignore STOP signs or try to bully other drivers by overtaking at inappropriate places. There is a constant fear that, if they are denied driving privileges, they will lose their independence. Most would feel they had lost a part of their identity. Please understand that an older driver must protect her/his driving privileges; DO NOT HARASS THEM as happened to me recently. An angry, younger driver bellowed and threatened me for not driving at 70 kilometers an hour on Power Dam Drive, south of Vincent Massey Drive. That angry driver was so very wrong for I was driving at the posted speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour. Older folk are little different from the young;
they, too, have their pride and are hesitant to ask others to give them a ride. Without driving privileges they are forced to become virtual ‘shut-ins’ with a reduced quality of life - a sure cause for shortening one’s life. Are those impatient younger drivers ready to participate in the decline of a reasonable way of life for those in their twilight years? The young must never forget that they, too, will become seniors and will, one day, ask of others the same as the seniors do today, please be considerate. ‘Santa’ thought it best to make them two sizes bigger than my shoe size. It was called “growing into them.” So, for the first two winters, the toobig-for-my-feet problem was solved by wearing an extra pair of woolen socks, provided by a thoughtful Santa. The mail-order catalogue put shopping, especially out in the rural areas, at a person’s finger tips. Order forms in the back were filled out and called in. A week or so later, a parcel arrived at the village post office, or in Cornwall it was delivered by a contractor. For years a guy who grew up in our neighbourhood, Lawrence McDonald, had the Sears delivery contract. People just called him the “Larry, the Sears delivery guy.” Funny, isn’t it. The mail-order catalogue has died and gone to retail heaven, but on-line shopping, which seems a lot like catalogue shopping without a computer, has become the next big thing and threatens to put department stores out of business. What was that thing about the more things change the more they stay the same. ********* Ask Guy Lauzon if this is his last term as member of Parliament for Stormont-DundasSouth Glengarry and he offers a smile. a series of racial taunts and threats he received over a period of weeks. As a result of the show of support, Turner said he had decided against leaving the city. ... CNR said it planned to close its Ingleside station. ... City council gave a Thumbs Down to a proposal to make Fourth Street a one-way artery. ... A bylaw was passed to change the name of St. Andrews Road to Pitt Street, Silmser Road to McConnell Avenue, Lass Street to Notre Dame Street and Highway 2 to Vincent Massey Drive. ... Piling driving for the new $198,000 recreation centre at the Athletic Grounds was under way. ... Meanwhile, the Cornwall Community Arena (Water Street Arena) board of directors announced that the future of the facility was up in the air and might not re-open for the winter season. ... A & W on Hwy. 2 (Vincent Massey Drive) held a customer appreciation day. The specials included 25 cents Papa Burgers, 15 cent hot dogs and large root beer for 10 cents. ... Cafe Gayety at the Parkway Hotel had its grand opening. It was billed as Cornwall’s only night club. ... The Towne Line Motel and Towne Lane Bowlerama opened. The bowling alley had 32 lanes, with eight for 10-pin bowling. It also featured automatic pin setters. ... The local bricklayers union signed a new oneyear contract with several firms. The agreement put the base hourly rate at $2.50, up from $2.25. It called for an 10 cent increase in May, 1961. ... A plan to train unemployed persons as lifeguards was proposed by the city recreation department and the YM-YWCA. The 10-week course would be given at the Paragon Motel indoor pool. ... St. Lawrence High School principal Remi Lalonde announced recipients of $37,645 worth of scholarships and bursaries. Michael Irwin (Royal Military College) and Jacques Racine (Royal Roads) each received military scholarship worth $10,000. ONE LAST THING Adults are just kids with money.

Back in the 1950s, when church-going was a big part of family life and pews were full on Sundays, not to mention collection plates, when the playing of a Sunday sport where admission was charged was against the law and movie theatres were locked up on the Sabbath, the bestread ‘book’ in most Cornwall and area homes was not the Bible. No. The best read ‘book’ was either the Simpson-Sears or Eaton’s catalogue. Sometimes both. Both Simpson-Sears and Eaton’s had small store-front catalogue stores on Pitt Street. This was before the coming of malls that changed the retail shopping landscape and started the catalogue mail-order business on its way to the retail dustbin. The last Eaton’s catalogue was published in 1976. The former made-in-Canada retail giant folded in 1999. But Simpson-Sears, which morphed into Sears Canada, soldiered on with catalogues. Of all the catalogues Sears sent out - winter, spring, summer and fall - the big one was the Christmas Wish publication, which was must reading for every kid making a list for Santa. You w ould be hard-pressed to find anyone over the age of 55 who as a kid, with the Christmas Wish catalogue spread out on the floor, didn’t spend considerable time poring over the glossy pages. As a kid who still believed in Santa, Rudolph and the elves, I thought St. Nick sent the catalogue for my perusal. My first pair of new skates, J.C. Higgins, were ordered from the Eaton’s catalogue. CORNWALL, Ontario - This year, some of the proceeds made during the Seaway Food Festival’s Restaurant Week will go to support the Agapè Centre. At participating Restaurant Week restaurants, $0.75 of every $10 meal sold will go to the Agapè Centre. For $28 meals that is $1.50 and $2 of every $34 meal sold will go to Agapè. For the first year ever, there will also be a lunch menu at participating Restaurant Week establishments. Another first is the swag. Seaway Food Festival will be selling T-shirts and hats for Restaurant week and a part of those proceeds will also be going to the Agapè Centre. “Community is at the very core of what Seaway Food Festival is all about,” said Sebastien “Mani” Manigat, Director & Founder of Seaway Food Festival. “We are truly honored to form this partnership with such a remarkable local organization and lend our support in this manner. It goes without saying that our local restaurants are the backbone of every initiative that we do. I’m very grateful that they embraced this event and in unison all decided to step up and give back for this cause,” Agapè Centre Executive Director Diane Plourde was also excited at the announcement of this new partnership.
“I see it as a win-win,” she said. “People will go out and support these local eateries while supporting a local charity at the same time.” Dave Petrynka, Owner and Chef at Eight Zero Zero also said that as a restaurant owner he said this as a great opportunity for Restaurant Week. “It makes us feel good,” he said. “It makes everything come together inside. Knowing that a charity is getting supported as well makes it that much more special.” Mani explained that this partnership fit with Seaway Food Festival’s community vision. “Every restaurant I’ve talked to are very enthusiastic about this,” he said. “There is no Seaway Food Fest without the people who make the food. This is a collective effort.” Restaurant Week is in its sixth year. Last year, nearly 5, 000 meals were sold during Restaurant Week. Restaurant Week is running from Nov. 7 to 11.

CORNWALL, Ontario - La Citadelle high school was ready to celebrate International Day of the Girl on Wednesday, Oct. 11 and offer new experiences and opportunities to girls in Cornwall. The sixth year of this event saw a major increase in participation. Approximately 100 girls signed up for the event through pre-registration, a 25 percent increase from last year. One of the organizers of the event, Danielle MacNeil, attributed the spike to better advertising and getting the word out through social media. The event, for girls aged eight to 16 took place at the school in the afternoon and involved several different workshops for the participants to take part in. “Today gives them the opportunity to take part in things they might not otherwise,” said MacNeil. Workshops that were being held this year included shooting a TV Show with YourTV,
learning crossfit from Seaway Valle Crossfit, cooking with Mindful Cookery and many other activities. “We hope the girls walk away having tried something new and maybe found a new passion,” MacNeil said. She went on to explain that the whole point of International Day of the Girl is about pushing boundaries. “We are so lucky we live in North America,” she said. “In other parts of the world its (International Day of the Girl) is about fighting things like inequality and forced marriages.” Girls were encouraged to bring their friends and their parents. There were activities for the parents as well, including seminars on meditation practices and on mental health from Cornwall’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. TORONTO, Ontario - BDC’s most recent study, Future-Proof Your Business: Adapting to Demographic and Technology Trends, identifies six major emerging changes that are fundamentally reshaping Canada’s business environment. The study’s key findings were revealed today, during a BDC Small Business WeekTM kickoff event, co-hosted by Facebook Canada. “Our survey clearly shows that businesses can’t afford to ignore the major changes in Canada’s workforce and digital technology,” says Pierre Cléroux, Vice President, Research and Chief Economist at BDC. “The impacts of these trends are profound and offer great opportunities for Canadian business owners. Those who get ahead of the changes are building stronger, faster-growing and more profitable companies.” “Digital technologies are already transforming how we live, learn and work,” says Bardish Chagger, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister of Small Business and Tourism. “This trend is only going to accelerate further. And while this technology represents tremendous opportunity, it also requires that we adapt to these modern realities. Our government is working hard to build a strong foundation of tools and supports, so that our
entrepreneurs and small businesses have all of the resources they need to expand, grow and create modern jobs in today’s global economy.”
Embracing cultural diversity: a winning recruitment strategy While several studies emphasize that companies with an ethnically diverse labour force perform better financially, only 6% of Canadian entrepreneurs reported relying on immigrant workers to fill their needs for skilled employees. Immigrants will account for two-thirds of Canada’s population growth in 2022 and up to 80% by 2032, according to Statistics Canada data. “Our survey shows that entrepreneurs need to do more to understand the contributions that new Canadians could make to their business,” says Pierre Cléroux, Vice President, Research and Chief Economist at BDC. “Many business owners are missing out on this important pool of talent.” Businesses that took action to facilitate hiring skilled workers, such as new Canadians, expect higher annual sales growth.
Use of e-commerce platforms expected to double by 2020 Digital platforms are making it simpler and more convenient for customers to get what they want, when they want it and how they want it. And consumers are making purchases
armed with more information than ever before. In fact, BDC found that nine out of 10 consumers systematically visit a company’s website before contacting it for information, and more than half of the business-to-business buying process is done online before a salesperson is contacted. According to BDC, businesses that have embraced digital technologies have improved their customer experience (49%), boosted revenue growth (34%), and enhanced their efficiency through lower costs (36%) and better productivity (45%).
Yet, survey results suggests that, social media aside, digital technology adoption remains quite low among small businesses, with less than one quarter of businesses with fewer than 20 employees currently using e-commerce platforms. Fortunately, this proportion is expected to rise to about 48% by 2020. BDC’s survey was conducted online with 1,413 business leaders across Canada. The survey was sent to members of a BDC panel as well as to a group of panellists recruited by Maru/Matchbox.

The Chamber’s ever popular Spring Home & Leisure Show puts many of our local businesses “on-stage” to thousands of the region’s consumers.
The Chamber has a number of programs designed to help businesses save money. Its affinity programs include preferred transaction rates, fuel savings, insurance programs, shipping reductions and more. The Chamber Rewards program gives member businesses and their employees discounts on both products and services offered by a number of local merchants. More than 10,000 employees across the Cornwall area have Chamber Rewards cards they can use to their benefit.
Excellence in Business. The Chamber’s most distinguished affair is its Business Excellence Awards and Citizen of the Year banquet. The event pays tribute to a number of local businesses and individuals for their contributions to Cornwall’s economic growth as well as selecting a tireless volunteer as the prestigious Citizen of the Year. Fighting Bill 148. This proposed legislation will devastate small businesses and could cost many people their jobs. The Chamber is working with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and chambers province-wide to lobby the government and force common sense change to the Bill.
Golf Day. The Chambers’ annual Golf Day brings together area professionals for an outstanding opportunity for them to network and to share ideas and goals. Even guests from outside our region have judged Golf Day as one of the best events of its kind in Eastern Ontario. Pub Nites. These networking and business focused events are becoming increasingly popular with the local business community. They are well attended and applauded by Cornwall’s business professionals as a great “business-after-hours” event.

CORNWALL, Ontario – This Saturday, Oct. 14, over 50 participants took part in the planting of 150 maple trees at the Children’s Aid Society of SDG. Funded by Tree Canada, the Maple Leaf Project is a Canada-wide event taking place in celebration of Canada 150. Raisin Region Conservation Authority was one of 150 groups participating in the celebration, which featured heavy First Nations themes. Tree Canada is a national not-for-profit organization that plants trees and promotes urban forestry. Program Manager, Rebecca Taylor says that there were a lot of careful considerations taken for each project. “We have at least one project happening in every province and territory,” said Taylor. “Each tree planting event has similar themes, in that we’re planting native maple trees, the appropriate provincial emblem tree, as well as trees chosen by the local First Nations community.” The trees, themselves were planted in the shape of a maple leaf, with seven species of maple. RRCA Forrestry Specialist, Normand Genier says that he and his team tried to ensure the trees would be beautiful all year. “What’s unique about this project is that in the future, people will be able to fly over this property and see a large maple leaf. We picked a variety of species which will ensure there will be colour in the maple leaf year-round,” said Genier. “We used GIS to create the initial shape of the maple leaf. Then, we double checked everything with a compass, and sent a drone out to triple check the shape.”

Le 1er janvier 2018, les enfants ainsi que les jeunes adultes de 24 ans et moins, ayant une carte santé de l’Ontario, auront accès au programme des médicaments de l’Ontario sans frais. L’inscription à l’assurance Santé Plus se fera automatiquement et se terminera au 25e anniversaire du jeune adulte. C’est un programme qui donne accès à 4 400 produits pharmaceutiques couverts par le programme des médicaments de l’Ontario. Cela comprend entre autres. • Les antibiotiques • Les pompes pour l’asthme • Les auto-injecteurs pour l’épinéphrine pour allergies sévères • L’insuline et autres médicaments pour le diabète • Les bandelettes de test pour le diabète • Les contraceptifs oraux • Les médicaments pour la santé mentale • Les médicaments pour traiter les troubles déficitaires de l’attention et d’hyperactivité (TDAH) • Quelques médicaments pour traiter des cancers infantiles et d’autres maladies rares
Il n’y a pas d’inscription à compléter à l’Assurance Santé Plus. Les enfants et jeunes adultes admissibles au Programme de médicaments de l’Ontario devront présenter leur carte santé et une ordonnance valide au pharmacien(ne). Un enfant, ou un jeune adulte, pourrait avoir besoin d’un médicament non couvert par le programme des médicaments de l’Ontario. Différentes solutions sont possibles 1) S’adresser au prescripteur et voir s’il y a une alternative couverte par le programme. 2) Le médicament pourrait être disponible par le biais du Programme d’accès exceptionnel. C’est une demande qui doit être faite par le prescripteur au siège du programme des médicaments de l’Ontario. Cette demande peut prendre de 6 à 8 semaines avant d’être acceptée ou refusée. 3) Le médicament pourrait être remboursé par un tiers ou tout simplement ne pas être couvert. Père Bernard Cameron. en tant que doyen à quelque reprises et coprésident du Synode diocésain. On se souviendra du Père Cameron pour sa vie de service et son dévouement dans notre diocèse. On se souviendra aussi de sa grande dévotion à la Vierge Marie et en particulier à Notre-Dame de Medjugorje, y ayant conduit plus d’une douzaine de pèlerinages. Le Père Cameron était un grand raconteur d’histoires et un historien qui a utilisé ses
cadeaux pendant ses homélies. Il a pris soin des gens qu’il a servis et il nous manquera. La translation de la dépouille à la paroisse St. Andrew se fera le 18 octobre et sera exposée de 16h à 21h. Il n’y aura pas de visite au salon funéraire. La Messe de funérailles sera présidée par S.E. Mgr Prendergast le 19 octobre à 14h. Enterrement au cimetière paroissial St. Andrew, St. Andrews West.
Ça bouge, ça marche, ça court et on apprend à l’école Rose des Vents! Le chemin du retour vers l’école au mois d’août s’est fait rempli de sourires et de nouveaux défis. Quel début d’année! Déjà octobre, ça passe tellement vite! La journée du drapeau franco-ontarien est derrière nous. Cette belle journée où le vert et le blanc sont à l’honneur. Nous sommes fiers de parler cette belle langue française et nous sommes aussi fiers de le démontrer une fois par année dans notre belle ville! Les élèves de l’école Rose des Vents ont fait du bruit avec leur tintamarre. Les élèves de la maternelle à la 4e année se sont faits entendre et ont démontré fièrement que le français; ils y tiennent! Nos grands de la 5e et de la 6e année sont allés marcher avec notre école secondaire L’Héritage. Aussi, nous aimons encourager notre communauté. Nous sommes une école internationale et il nous fait plaisir de le faire! Monsieur Stéphane Paradis a organisé la marche Terry Fox qui eut lieu le vendredi 29 septembre dernier. Nous sommes heureux d’avoir remis à la fondation un montant de 1343,50$. Nous avons des familles très généreuses à notre école. Un gros merci pour votre appui! Nous avons aussi déjà un tournoi sportif qui est passé. Les entraineuses Mme Caroline Samson-Bélair, Mme Julie Brunet et Mme Mélanie Davidson ont porté à bout de bras une équipe de 38 coureurs le vendredi 6 octobre dernier à Ottawa. Nous avons de la relève en course! Bravo à Maude Millette pour sa 3e place et à Marielle Patenaude pour sa 5e place!

CORNWALL, Ontario - C’est dimanche le 15 octobre 2017 que le révérend Père Bernard (Bernie) Cameron est décédé à l’Hôpital communautaire de Cornwall. Il n’avait pas été bien au cours des deux dernières années. Fr. Bernie, comme on l’appelait affectueusement, est né à St. Andrews West le 15 avril 1933. Il était l’un des 10 enfants, 7 garçons et 3 filles, d’Alexander et Helen (MacDonell) Cameron. Il a fréquenté l’école secondaire privée St. Andrew et plus tard, la maison Nazareth de Scarboro à St. Marys (Ontario). Il s’est ensuite dirigé au Grand Séminaire de Saint-Sulpice à Montréal pour ses études théologiques où il a obtenu son baccalauréat en théologie. Il fut ordonné prêtre pour le Diocèse d’Alexandria-Cornwall par S.E. Mgr Rosario Brodeur le 30 mai 1958 en l’église de St. Andrew. Son premier poste était vicaire à la paroisse de St. Columban où il est resté pendant trois ans avant d’être chargé de sa première paroisse en 1961, St. Catherine of Sienna à Greenfield. Au cours de ses plus de 59 ans de sacerdoce, il a servi dans plusieurs paroisses anglophones
du diocèse, y compris les paroisses St. Mary à Williamstown, Blessed Sacrement à Cornwall, St. Columban à Cornwall, Our Lady of Grace à Ingleside, Saint Pius X à Long Sault, St. Alexandre à Lochiel, Saint Catherine of Sienna à Greenfield, St. Anthony à Apple Hill et St. Michael à Monkland. En outre, il a servi 10 ans en tant que recteur de la cathédrale St. Finnan à Alexandria En 2001, son rêve de servir sa paroisse d’origine a finalement été réalisé lorsqu’il a été nommé curé de St. Andrew. Il est resté en tant que curé jusqu’à sa retraite en octobre 2013. Après sa retraite, le Père Cameron a régulièrement remplacé ses confrères quand ils devaient s’absenter de leur paroisse. Il a beaucoup apprécié cette phase de son sacerdoce jusqu’à ce que sa santé force une retraite permanente. Pendant ses près de six décennies de sacerdoce, le Père Cameron a contribué à la vie diocésaine en assumant un certain nombre de services pastoraux, y compris professeur d’instruction religieuse à CCVS et Général Vanier, conseiller spirituel du Conseil diocésain du Catholic Women’s League et aumônier diocésain des Chevaliers de Colomb. Il a également occupé des postes de responsabilité parmi ses confrères

ANNONCE DU CENTRE D’INFORMATION Nouveau centre d’inspection des véhicules commerciaux – Autoroute 401 Ouest Étude d’évaluation environnementale de portée générale et de conception préliminaire (GWP 4045-10-01) LE PROJET En 2012, le ministère des Transports de l’Ontario (MTO) a retenu les services de Dillon Consulting Limited pour effectuer une étude d’évaluation environnementale de portée générale et de conception préliminaire en vue de repérer un emplacement adéquat pour la construction d’un nouveau Centre d’inspection des véhicules commerciaux (CIVC) qui remplacera l’actuel Centre d’inspection des camions (CIC) de Lancaster. Le centre actuel se trouve sur les voies de l’autoroute 401 ouest, à l’est de l’échangeur de la route de comté 34, dans le canton de Glengarry Sud, Comtés unis de Stormont, Dundas et Glengarry. Une composante clé de l’étude consiste à repérer un site pour la construction du Centre d’inspection des véhicules commerciaux le long du corridor ouest de l’autoroute 401. La zone de recherche visée pour le nouveau centre s’étend de la route de comté 14, canton de Stormont Sud, jusqu’à la frontière entre l’Ontario et le Québec, vers l’est.
Le Centenaire de la 6e apparitions de la Vierge Mari
Des séances d’information publiques ont eu lieu en juin 2012 et en avril 2013 pour fournir des renseignements sur l’étude et recueillir des commentaires sur les sites de rechange proposés pour le CIVC de Lancaster, sur le processus d’évaluation et sur la solution de rechange recommandée. Les documents présentés peuvent être consultés à l’adresse www.LancasterCVIF.ca. L’étude a été mise en veilleuse en 2013 et a été réouverte en 2016.
Le vendredi 13 octobre était fêté le Centenaire de la 6e apparitions de la Vierge Marie, mère de Dieu, à trois enfants de Fatima. Pour l’occasion la statue représentant la Vierge fut décorée avec des roses fraîches, don des paroisssiens et amies de Madeleine Lepage. Les Chevaliers de Colomb de la Cocathédrale de la Nativité de la B.V.M, ont obtenu qu’une Célébration Eucharistique soit offerte en l’honneur de Marie. Pour l’occasion spéciale une chorale fut organisée pour animer la messe offerte par le Père Jean Muakadi, curé de la paroisse, et concélébrée par Mgr Réjean Lebrun et l’abbé Laurier Rivet, anciens curés de la paroisse ainsi que l’abbé Claude Hallé. Monsieur Gilles Routhier touchait notre orgue Casavan et Madame Michèle Chauvin-Bourdon dirigeait la chorale de quelques 25 voix. Presque 180 personnes assistaient à cet évènement pour fêter Notre Dame de Fatima appelée aussi Notre Dame du Rosaire. Les messes sont célébrées régulièrement le dimanche à 10h pour le moment par l’abbé Émmanuelle Ngiuwonsanga ou l’abbé Claude Hallé. Les confessions sont offertes une demiheure avant chaque célébration.
Lors de la séance d’information publique d’avril 2013, on a repéré un emplacement possible pour le nouveau centre, à savoir entre le chemin Gravel Pit / le chemin Eamon et la route de comté 12 dans le canton de Stormont Sud, Comtés unis de Stormont, Dundas et Glengarry. L’étude a été reprise en 2016 et on a procédé à une nouvelle étude des emplacements possibles. Après cette étude révisée, un nouvel emplacement a été recommandé pour le Centre. Il est situé sur l’autoroute 401 ouest/échangeur de la route de comté 34, dans le canton de Glengarry Sud. SÉANCE D’INFORMATION PUBLIQUE Une séance d’information publique (SIP) aura lieu le 2 novembre 2017 afin de recueillir les commentaires du public et des organismes sur l’emplacement recommandé. CORNWALL, Ontario - In a special meeting Cornwall City Council considered extending sanitary sewer services to the North end of Brookdale Ave. from Tollgate Rd. to Cornwall Centre. Rd. There are 166 developable acres owned by 13 property owners on that section of Brookdale Ave. between Tollgate Rd. and Cornwall Centre Rd. The cost of extending sanitary sewer services to the north end of Brookdale Ave. would be $7 million. There are currently no options for funding that the City could apply for from senior levels of government and the City does not have money in its reserves to cover the cost. The current plan would be to have the property owners along that stretch of Brookdale Ave. pay a share of the cost to hook up to the new sewer system and this would cover around $3.5 million worth of the project. The remaining half of the project would be funded as a capital pro-

Property owners would be responsible for the cost of connecting their property to the extended sanitary sewer system. The City’s General Manager of Financial Services Tracey Bailey said that a property owner could choose not connect their property and this decision would not increase the cost to other property owners. Bailey went on to explain that this cost would be filed as an account receivable that they would try to collect at a later date. “All property owners have had the opportunity to voice their concerns for this project,” said the City’s Division Manager for Economic Development Bob Peters. “We have done those consultations and are aware of their concerns.” Peters went on to say that there was not necessarily a consensus on the issue. “There is a minority that are against this and

Wave of Light remembers lost infants CORNWALL, Ontario – In recognition of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day, PAIL Support for Cornwall & Area hosted their second annual Wave of Light Ceremony, taking place between 7-8 p.m. at Memorial Park. Now an international movement, the event commemorates babies lost during or after pregnancy. Organizer, Penny Brown says that the memorial event is a cathartic way to connect with others who have experienced similar loss. “ T h e r e ’s something special
about supporting one another and doing this together,” said Brown. “It’s important that people know that they don’t have to go through this alone.” Candles are lit in a group memorial, taking place in Cornwall and across the globe. James Clarke was one of the parents in attendance, holding a candle for his son, Alexander, who passed away last December. “He was diagnosed with a fatal infant disease, and we were told we would probably get two years,” said Clarke. “Unfortunately, he only made it for eight-and-a-half months after many surgeries.”
Despite the numerous challenges Alexander faced, Clarke says that his demeanor remained pleasant. “We call him Smiler, because he went through everything and just kept smiling,” “We are glad to be here supporting other parents.
